Letter from the Editor
Male Model Journal 24 "The Ultimate Sacrifice": Editorial & Interview
are going to drop a Summer Men's Issue and bring in the Fall in style. We dropped two Mode issues this month that include more pages than usual. We usually try to shoot for
anywhere between 80 to 90+ pages..we clearly went over 130+ pages this month. Honestly guys, the only reason I created multiple issues is 1...we were getting hella submissions, and 2...we wanted to make it fair enough to purchase across the board knowing that the companies publishing our work went up in price after the cost of shipping and tax was included. But seeing that we are not receiving anything significant in sales, I think moving for I will just shorten the issues, until we only allow the top elite for one huge issue each month. Less stress on me, the editor, and more pressure on the contributors, to go out there and create something that'll make us want to include you in the next upcoming issue. My main goal is to focus on our website and continue to build that platform so we can provide more content, and I can't do that when I'm spending more time creating multiple issues. We are coming up on year 4 in February, so we're still babes, but the adventure is an adrenaline rush to say the least, and we're enjoying every second of it. And we appreciate everyone who's been part of this process and contributed to our vision of a new, trendsetting, creative publication. Once again, we just want to take time out to thank everyone who has contributed to our creative community and to everyone who has supported us on our journey.

Our themes for the remaining months of 2018 are still on our website, so be sure to go check them out and download them once you get a chance. We encourage anyone who wants to submit too shoot and submit early. We are pushing real hard to have these issues on stands by next year. So moving forward there will be more celebrity features, interviews, inside content, and on-line features. Thanks for being apart of what we have established. Enjoy the issue.
Thank you. -Editor

MENS MODEL JOURNAL
enezuelan Native Andres Leonardi sits down and chats with 7HuesHommes for our new feature in the Male Model Journal. Andres reveals to 7HuesHommes the black, the white and the gray about growing up in the second largest city on the northwestern side of his country. He also shares with us an emotional story about his great escape from the tragic war his hometown faces, and his new life living in New York as well as being a fashion model.
TH -Hello Andres! How Are you? AL -I’m great!! Excited, and also flattered to be part of this
amazing publication. Thank you so much for having me, it’s an honor. TH -Thank you so much for agreeing to being our model for our 7Hues Hommes Male Model Diaries feature. Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from? AL -I was born and raised in a city named Maracaibo “The Land of the beloved Sun”, the second largest city located on the northwestern side of my country, Venezuela, the nickname is because of how hot it is throughout the year. I really I miss that place! TH -What was it like growing up in Venezuela? AL -I have the best memories that I would never change for
anything in this world. I grew up in a family of 5, with a brother and a sister that are both older than me. Eating “Arepas” like any other little kid. Going to church every Sunday with family and then going for lunch all together. I was blessed to be able to attend the best education because of my parents. High school memories, there is always too many, but I remember running around during breaks asking to be in the soccer or basketball team; even though, I sucked at it. LOL! I wanted to be cool and feel included, I was always last line due to my height. Family road trips were the best; there’re no words to describe how beautiful my country is, the landscapes are simply “breathtaking”. That’s probably something most people will say about their country, but mine…mine, is the best. Last but not least, Christmas! Gaitas filling the air (Venezuelan folk music), hallacas (filled masa wrapped in banana leaves) are traditionally found on every table, it was my favorite time of the year; I have a big family, so being surrounded by your loved ones are the most priceless moments in life. Moments that would you simply can never get back. TH -What were your dreams growing up there? AL -I remember dreaming to be the president of my country’s oil
leading company PDVSA haha, every time that we drove by their office building I would tell my mom or my dad, ONE DAY… I went to college for business so that probably makes a little sense haha…but then as I grew up, life perspectives started changing within, by the age of 15/16; I would say, that’s when I started dreaming with being a model on the Dolce and Gabbana campaigns and runways were my thing. I remember flipping
24
7HUES AUGUST 2018
through magazines just to look at them and I wouldn’t tell anybody this was something I wanted to go after. I’ve always had my dreams and goals in a very private place. TH -Was modeling ever an option for you growing up? AL -It was never an option back in my country because
there was nothing called “fashion”, specially for men. Almost everyone knows that we are famous for women beauty pageants (Miss Venezuela) and that is pretty much it... so I always knew it was something that If I wanted to make it happen I needed to leave the country.
TH -What was the most life changing event that occurred in your life? AL -Back in 2010 I experienced the most scary and longest 5hrs of my entire life. A kidnapping attempt changed the course of my life completely. A group of 7 guys broke into my house looking for me in the middle of the day, the feeling of being on the edge of death and seeing your life in one single flashback it’s something that I would never want anybody to go through. I was tortured mentally and physically, not only that, but right in front of the people you love the most. Just them watching and being in danger as well made me see life from a complete different perspective, I realized that those things that were so important to me were no longer relevant, it made me stronger and courageous, I learned to give thanks more often, to appreciate the simplest things that life can offer you, at the moment I started living my life at its fullest because I was given one more opportunity in this world, so I’m going to take advantage of every second I have in this life. TH -So, we know that there is a very big war going on at home where you are from. How did it affect you and your family? When did you decide that you have to get out? AL -After this happened, I’m not going to lie; the first thought I had was, now what? I was 6 months from graduating from college and I couldn’t wait to finish, because I felt that was holding me back from many things. My mom became overprotective to the point that she wouldn’t allow me to leave my room for over 3 weeks, blinds down, eating in my room along with all kind of crazy things, and I would do it just to keep her calmed and relaxed. A couple of months later we both sat and had a serious conversation about our situation and how it was affecting me; this was when we decided that it was time for me to leave the country. TH -How does it feel now that you are no longer there? AL -Feelings are definitely mixed, my heart is still
there, my mom who is he most important person in my life is there and I’m here, because I had to run. I’m pursuing a life dream; YES! That has me over the moon because many people would kill to be where I am, but in exchange I’m sending voice notes, face-timing, living in another country, missing the most important dates and not being able to create all the memories I would have wanted. On top of that I’m always worried for her safety

and for her quality of life. I have not seen her since the last time she came to visit which was over 3 years ago and I cannot go back to Venezuela due to my asylum status, at least for another 3 years.
TH -Did you ever think that your journey would lead you onto the fashion industry? AL -I always had that feeling in my heart that every step I was taking was leading me to this today, it is all about the decisions we make and I decided this is what I wanted to do and be. This is not a hobby for me, I set myself a goal and it is a huge mountain with no peak that I’ll be climbing for the rest of my life, this means I would never stop working on my goal, I encourage everybody to have FAITH on their journey, I have FAITH on being an inspiration for others.
TH -N ow that you have left home to avoid the war and you are here now. What are the new challenges you face being a model? AL -Well I don’t even know where to start. First of, being a “Latino” already puts you on second place a lot of the time. It’s crazy how out of touch many brands are with their target demographic; there is worldwide imbalance in all areas of the way this fashion industry works. White-People go first. Also inferiority complex kicks in sometimes, too big, too skinny, too wide, hair too long, hair too short, no abs, too many abs, face too squared, face too rounded; it’s just never enough or right for them, so you really need to learn how to embrace your uniqueness and love yourself just the way you are. On the other side you have sexual harassment, and this is no surprise to anybody. This is like an epidemic and I would say, we, as male models get more harassed than females do, it’s crazy!!! It is really hard to block and get that thought of “Am I going to make it if I don’t give in their request ” out of your mind.
TH -Before modeling what was your take on fashion and style? AL -OH MY GOD!! it was awful LOL, I guess ,that back in the days it was trendy. I remember wearing Hollister, Abercrombie, and Ralph Lauren polos all the time popping my collar spike my hair up, wearing cargo shorts or distressed jeans with it, and sometimes I would even roll up my jeans and wear flip flops with this, you know I felt I was cool and wanted to look like I just landed from Cali…NOT!!
I have always loved fashion and just like fashion evolves with time, we, as models do as well.
TH -T ell us about your new life as a model. How did this happen? AL -At first it was tough, I couldn’t do much due to the fact that I was an immigrant with no papers/green card, so it took me some time. When I finally got settled I started looking for an agency back in Miami and signed with MP Mega Miami. Then, in the middle of my contract with them my current manager reached out through Instagram and this is when everything started really happening for me. I finally found somebody who truly believed in me and would do anything to get me where I wanted to be, you can’t make it in this industry by yourself, you need that teammate that is willing to work as hard as you…and mine, mine works his butt off hahaha.
On the other hand, I’m enjoying every second of it, and I’m grateful for all the opportunities God has given me, from the very small ones: like that casting you go and ask yourself what am I doing here? To unreal ones like answering questions during an interview for a cover of a magazine the next day haha, I have no complains, I am living my dream and definitely my best life.
- Andres
TH -How was your transition from knowing nothing about being a model, or the fashion industry; to being in front of the camera and having to invoke emotions, all while selling clothing and adapting to your Environment? AL -I have always loved fashion and just like fashion evolves with time, we, as models do as well. There is always something new to learn in this industry so you need to keep yourself up to date. I feel like you are on a constant development. One of the things that excites me the most is having the honor to showcase the designer pieces, appreciating the time, the creativity and all the hard work that is behind what you are wearing; it’s like “wow, they picked me over the rest”.
On the other side, being in front of the camera is one of the best things that has happened to me, it has definitely changed the way I am, my personality and the way I project myself nowadays, it helped overcoming my shyness, (”YES! I was very shy, believe it or not; haha”) and developed my confidence in several areas of my life. You step out of your comfort zone most of the time and that leads to creating new skills, I love the fact that you can become somebody else for a moment and get lost with it.
