elcome to our last issue of 2018. We must say this was a wonderful year full of exciting editorials and colorful hues. We must apologize for the late release this month. I have been extremely busy on my end securing assets that will further benefit our overall brand and publication over the following years, and it has been taking a toll on me physically. We strive to release each issue before day 7 of each new month but it was extended, nevertheless, we still accomplished what we set out to do, and that's to release another awesome issue to end the year strong.

Letter from the Editor
"SINGAPORE GARDENS" 56 Wolf Zuno
This issue we will be sitting down with a very creative retoucher by the name of Pratik Naik, who started SolsticeRetouch.com. He will be interviewed by Yinsey Wang, one of our new contributing writers. I would like to take the time out to thank every contributor who submitted to us over the year and everyone on their team that helped bring their vision to life, from Photographers to Wardrobe Stylist, Creative Directors, Makeup Artist, Hair Stylist, & Assistants. It's a beautiful feeling receiving emails from all around the world stating that it is a dream to be accepted inside one of our issues and that our platform is loved and followed daily for inspiration and motivation. This sort of support really pushes us to be the best at what we do. Our 2019 themes will be out soon, sorry for the delay, once again, we have been extremely busy laying foundations for a stronger brand. We will post an announcement on our site and on social media once we've completed our themes for next year. We encourage anyone who wants to submit too shoot and submit early. We are pushing real hard to have these issues on stands by next year. So moving forward there will be more celebrity features, interviews, inside content, and on-line features. Thanks for being apart of what we have established. Enjoy the issue. Thank you. -Editor

RESPECT THE
RETOUCHERS!
Pratik Naik is a household name in the retouching industry, known for his incredible attention to detail and his ability to skilfully breathe life into images. Having been creative from an early age, Naik finally found his ultimate passion in retouching. His network of satisfied clients include Ben Sasso, Jeremy Cowart and Lara Jade. Yet his work does not stop there - Naik is also an established educator, teaching retouchers and helping to push them forward in their respective careers through his Retouching and Capture One series, as well as workshop retreats where creatives can ask questions and receive tailored tuition.
N
aik’s most recent launch is the powerful Infinite Color Panel tool - the answer to a problem that Naik has had personally for over 10 years. Infinite Color Panel makes intricate and advanced color accessible to all by expertly randomising a set of adjustment layers to add a unique look to any image on Photoshop. Yet Naik is not just an innovator, he also connects others, by increasing engagement between artists and nurturing a growing community where they can share ideas and maximise their potential online. Naik is known not only for his talents, generosity but also his kindness, patience, honesty, Pomeranian-related posts (in particular how alike the cute breed is similar to his now-wife, the superbly talented photographer Bella Kotak) and a phenomenon where other retouchers incorporate his face in various famous images for fun. Through this exclusive interview, we
learn more about Naik’s journey so far, as well as his favourite retouching tools! Yinsey Wang -You were creative from an early age, starting with drawing, then moving onto photography and finally retouching. Tell us a bit about your journey and what compelled you (and still compels you) to be a creator? Pratik Naik -That is exactly mine in a nutshell. I jumped around a lot until I realized I could continue to jump around till something stuck with me. Retouching just happened to be it, but it took years to figure that one out! You can’t really give up or you’ll never find your calling. Yinsey Wang -What is, in your opinion, the cornerstone of ‘great’ (as opposed to just ‘good’) creativity? Pratik Naik -I think, a lot of soul searching. Seeing

what works for you before it works for others. We each have a vision in how we’ll end up creating something. Staying true to it without much outside influence will be a platform for great creativity. Yinsey Wang - You have inspired many individuals to become retouchers and you also run a highly successful Facebook group to foster community between likeminded creators. Why is this important to you and have these connections perhaps even impacted your career, outlook and even your own perception of what you do? Pratik Naik -I learned along the way that forming communities and help others along the way was much more interesting to me than just making it on my own. I used connected of mine to get where I wanted to be, so it was fun to see what people would do with a large range of connections and a sense of community!

7HUES DECEMBER 2018
Yinsey Wang - Your retouching classes are internationallyacclaimed and have jumpstarted the careers of many retouchers’ careers. Why did you decide to go into teaching and what do you think is key to effective learning? Pratik Naik -It was by demand that it happened. I listened to what people wanted and it seemed like more than anything, they had a lot of questions about retouching so I would spend a majority of my time just helping people anyway. I thought it was best to just formulate a proper structure of courses and go at it! It was worth the time seeing people evolve. Yinsey Wang -What are the biggest challenges that the retouching industry face today? How do you think these can be overcome? Is there anything you think should be changed or that the industry should consider adopting across the board? Pratik Naik -We’re on the brink of artificial intelligence changing how retouching is done and how many jobs there will still be. There’s debate if it will have an impact and to what extent. I think in 5 years, we’ll see it work quite well for most basic things like skin work and detail

clean up. We’ll see what happens. Yinsey Wang -What is your favourite retouching tool and
why?
Pratik Naik -I really like the healing brush. It allows me to
clean up skin and it’s quite relaxing! Dodge and burn is fun as well, it allows me to even out the skin. Once you get the hang of it, it becomes quite fun!
Yinsey Wang -Tell us about your latest offering, Infinite Color Panel. Why is it different from other tools out there? What were the challenges you encountered in developing and refining it? How did you reflect the experiences of other creatives to create a product specifically targeted to their needs? Pratik Naik -Modifying the colors of an image to convey a mood is important for many creatives. It was something that was hard to execute for many, including myself. It’s time consuming and really confusing to those who don’t understand the complex adjustments you have to do to get to where you want to go. So I wanted to develop a tool that gave people options in what their images could look like, literally an infinite range of colors people can pick from created to their liking. I haven’t seen any other tool do that yet!
24
7HUES DECEMBER 2018
The hardest part was making sure the tool itself did not create results that were unsatisfactory, so it took some time to tweak it to perfection!
