ELECTRONICS LABORATORY

Nova also appreciates the importance the Internet plays in the life of international students. As well as keeping in touch with family and friends back home, students can also use the institute’s computer lab for assignments and research purposes. Now with computer terminals available for students, Nova’s IT Lab is an area of continued growth as it is an important part of daily life.

Another area of our institute is the fully equipped electronic laboratory used for practical activities. This specialist area has been designed to create the ideal environment for maximizing learning so students can make the most of ‘hands on experience’ required by future employers. TRAINING & ASSESSMENT There is always a need for well-trained people. Your training will consisit of theory, application of theory, workshop safety and management, business concepts and practical electronics. While teachers are the backbone of any educational institution , exemplary teaching methods are fundamental to the success of educational outcomes at all levels. At Nova we believe in utilizing a mix of traditional and innovative teaching methods in order to engage both teachers and students in the learning process. The specic teaching method used will depend on the nature of the subject being studied and the number of students taking the course. Most courses incorporate the use of audiovisual equipment, computer laboratories, overhead projectors and handouts.

Assessment Assessments for each unit includes a range of approaches to allow students a number of dierent ways to demonstrate competence. Assessments will include practical demonstrations, written tests, assignments, case study reports, participation in role plays and classroom activities. Where necessary and appropriate, adjustments can be made to methods of delivery and assessment to suit the needs of the individual within the constraints of Training Package requirements.

General English

Entry Level

General English courses are designed to provide language skills necessary for living and working in an English speaking environment. The classes are suited to adult students who wish to improve their English language skills for the purposes of communication in a general sense. They allow the student to gain the skills necessary to make further individual progress towards expanding their skills for specic purposes, such as further studies.

Upon arrival students are given an inhouse placement test so that they may be placed in the most suitable class. All students at Nova Institute are 18+.

Teachers of General English are chosen rstly for their language skills, but equally for their patience and commitment to students learning a new language.

Assessment is on going and students have a work folio. The ongoing assessment ensures that students are making progress and allows for them to move to another level. Assessments include class exercises, progress tests and set projects.

Our General English courses develop skills in reading, comprehension, listening, speaking and writing. In developing theses skills, students are readied for future studies. The General English course requires students to participate in activities outside of the class room environment, to encompass a better and boader cultural environment, vocabulary and establish friendships.

Assessment

Students completing General English are given a General English Certicate with descriptors of their skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) The Nova Institute of Technology IELTS Preparation Courses are designed to teach international students the language skills necessary to sucessfully achieve a pass in IELTS examinations. Both levels are of 12 weeks duration and are self contained, with 20 hours of faceto-face study per week. Students may enroll for the full 24 weeks if they wish to increase their IELTS band. The course will introduce the types of texts and tasks found in IELTS examination, however the course is more

than a workshop for practicing examination techniques. These courses are designed to develop the necessary skills required to pass the examination. These English Language skills are required by Australian mainstream tertiary studies. Encouragement of independent learning and research and development of individual study plans will provide students with an introduction to the conventions of tertiary study in Australia, which can be substantially dierent to the system that they have grown up with.

Entry Level

Course Outcomes

Upon arrival students will be given an in-house Placement Test to ensure that their IELTS skills are current and no skills below 4.

At the end of the course, studen ts will: Be familiar with the structure of IELTS Tests. •• Be able to successfully complete the main task types in each of the four test modules. •• Give accurate written descriptions (at least 150 words in 20 minutes) of information presented in a table or graph, highlighiting trends, comparing and contrasting where necessary. •• Write a formal essay (250 words in 40 mintues) including introduction, body and conclusion. •• Speak on familiar topics in short question and answer from two minute speech and abstractly develop the topic as a discussion. •• Identify and listen for keywords, specic information, main points in the context of formal or semi formal academic listening tasks. •• In conversation identify the key participants and their relationships, location and purpose of interaction, predict and interpret information from a given context. •• Skim and scan texts for specic information, summarized texts, identifying main and supporting ideas, separate essential and non essential information, distinguish between opinion and fact. •• Be able to aim for the equivalent of a 5-6 band score on a full IELTS Test for Level 1. •• Be able to aim for the equivalent of a 6-7 band score on a full IELTS Test for Level 2.

The entry levels are as follows: •• Have successfully completed a General English Course which articulates into the IELTS Course •• Achieve satisfactory results in the Placement Test There are two courses, Level 1 & 2.

Assessment Students will be assessed on completed work including homework assignments, tests, in class work, any other pieces submitted for assessment and IELTS practice tests.

IELTS Level 1&2 This is a 240 hour, 12 week course, designed for students who want to learn English. It is a theme based course focusing on developing the skills required to pass the IELTS test. The focus is developing skills that parallel those required for tertiary study in Australian mainstream education.

Course Content The courses have an extremely varied content to ensure that all language skills are covered and that the required learning outcomes are achieved.

English For Academic Purposes (EAP) These courses are specifically designed for international students students to gain the English language and study skills required to be successful in an Australian University setting. Language skills to live or work in a foreign country are very different for those required for academic succsess. Assessments methods and study skills are often quite different as is the culture and environment. Our Academic courses give Nova students the tools

they need to successfully study in an Australian setting. The courses are divided into 2 twelve week courses. EAP 1 – for Certificate, Diploma and some Bechelors Courses which require an Academic IELTS score 5.0 for entry. EAP 2 – for Bachelor and Higher Degrees Courses which require an Academic IELTS score 5.5 for entry.

All materials have digital support components allowing students to address areas of weakness outside classroom time.
