Growing a Corps…

How does a corps grow… in size, talent, and performance? There are probably as many avenues you could go down on these issues as there are streets in the city. But one thing is for sure, no matter what size the corps is, or talent it possesses, 100% effort must be given in each performance so the corps moves in the right direction.

There are many dedicated staff, instructors, and volunteers who have seen it happen before. Just to name a few, look at your Board of Directors and staff. I see names like Edgar, Lizz and Barb, Tim, Fawn, and Jeff, just to name a few who were in the Surfers when the corps fielded less than 50 members. Most stuck it out and marched while the corps grew in name and rank – and it was these types of members who became the foundation for the corps and the success that was to follow.

In today’s age, where transportation is not the hindrance it was years back. Members of a corps can go after their dreams of playing for a larger corps – we’ve seen it happen with the 7th Regiment. This is a tough call, because no one wants to hold back any individual from being the best they can be, and experiencing drum corps at the highest level.

But at the same time, we know that if this happens over and over, then the 7th Regiment will be stunted in a growth pattern that will take many more years before gaining the attention and recognition that corps hopes to achieve.

There is an abundance of talented kids right here is our own backyard. Kids from southeastern Connecticut who together will build the pride it takes to grow a corps. Each individual is part of the whole, and that is true in practice, recruiting, fundraisers, on tour, or on the competition field.

The management of the 7th are totally dedicated to providing the tools and time required to build the corps.

Their dedication is seen in the quality instructional staff that has been hired to provide the teaching, write the score and visual performance for 2007. Many volunteers behind the scene are working the logistical issues to ensure that each trip and competition will be met with all the right things at the right time. Fundraising activities, the lifeblood to financing all efforts are being looked at and pursued.

But it must take the actions of the 7th Regiment members to provide the foundation that will build this corps.

For the Record…. Official 2006 Corps Scoreboard…

The 7th Regiment competed in 10 competitions in June/August of 2005 – there were also 2 rainouts. As a third year corps, the 7th continued to progress from beginning to end of season, with the finale of competing in their 2nd DCI Class III Championships in Madison, WI on August 8, 2006.

2007 Goals for the 7th As editor of the newsletter, I put out a question to the management of the 7th Regiment: “What are the goals for the upcoming 2007 seasons.” The response I received from the Business Manager, Tim Rall, expresses everyone’s feelings on this subject.

Goal 1) To increase the membership to at least 50 members.

Goal 2) To produce a corps that is ranked in the top 10 in the country, even though we will not be attending championships this year in California. Then, to build upon our success, become a Div. III finalist in the 2008 Championships in Indianapolis.

Goal 3) To attract more experienced members, preferably with marching band experience. Of course, we will also accept anyone who is willing to work hard and has a "teachable" attitude, regardless of experience level.

Goal 4) To instill in the members the principles of teamwork, commitment, respect and pride, essentials to building a successful drum corps.

Goal 5) To field a competitive winter guard. This will give the guard more performance experience and give the corps more exposure beyond our local area.

Goal 6) To attract and retain a very talented and energetic instructional staff who are in tune with modern drum corps techniques and who are inspirational to the corps members.

Donate to the 7th Regiment through your United Way Campaign If you contribute to the United Way at your job, then you have the opportunity to help out the 7th Regiment!

When filling out the paper work for your donation, you can check off “Other” and write in the Surfers Alumni Association. Your contributions would then go directly to helping out the corps.

There are several people doing this and what a thrill it is to know that your monies would be going to such a worthwhile cause.

* * * S.A.A. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT * * * Known for his great sense of humor and unending dedication to his task and the dietary welfare of the 7th membership and staff, Tim Paquette is without doubt, one of the most popular personalities that is associated with this drum corps.

Tim comes to the 7th Regiment with a solid resume, as he is the Food Service Director for the Stonington, CT Schools, a job that he has spent the past 11 years at. He and his staff have brought a new meaning to healthy and great tasting menus to the school children, being way ahead of state guidelines – and now brings all that knowledge and experience to the benefit of the 7th Regiment!

On tour with the corps, Tim can be seen from morning until night, working with his corps staff, preparing wonderful meals for all the 7th members and staff. His understanding of healthy choices and nutritious meals are a big plus for the marching hungry!

Tim is also joined by his wife Patti, who served as the corps nurse the past two years when on tour.

It doesn’t end there… Son Jonathan plays Bass Drum for the 7th… Daughter Jennifer is in the 7th’s Guard… and even the youngest son, Josh, has pitched in as a banner carrier for 7th Regiment parades. In closing – “Hats Off” to Tim and his entire family for making this drum corps experience so much better for all!

Volunteers for 2007 One aspect to success in a drum corps is the volunteers, which are always needed. The 7th Regiment has opportunities in several areas: cook staff, equipment truck and bus drivers, uniform maintenance (including pressing, washing, and sewing), and chaperones.

Volunteers will also be needed in 2007 for fundraisers such as a Golf Tournament, the Classic Drum Corps & Memorabilia night and Drum Corps on the Thames, scheduled for July 14th, 2007. Check the website often to look for details on our 2007 fundraisers. They will be posted when details are available.

Another 7th Regiment activity in which volunteers are needed is the camps. Again, visit the website for the camp schedules. If you are interested in being a much-needed volunteer, please contact Marilyn Beckwith, our Volunteer Coordinator for 2007, you can email her at lynmb4991@juno.com.

New Winter Guard…… KINETIC The 7th Regiment and Surfers Alumni Association are proud to present New England's newest Independent Winter Guard, Kinetic! The staff, with a long list of teaching and performance experience throughout the country, has been recruiting and instructing a hard-working group from all over Connecticut and is looking forward to making a strong impact on the creative and competitive world of indoor pageantry.

This year's instructional and logistical staff includes: Dana Saccomano: Caption Head / Designer Fawn Margolis Hogdon: Dance Instructor / Designer Mike Hernandez: Equipment Instructor / Designer Steve Lyons: Staging Instructor / Designer Steve Surina: Operations Manager / Consultant Kinetic will compete in the Musical Arts Conference circuit for the 2007 season. They are opening in the Independent A class and will compete in six shows held at various high schools throughout Connecticut, culminating with the MAC Indoor Championships on March 31st in Trumbull.

For their inaugural season, Kinetic presents a kaleidoscopic interpretation of noted British composer David Bedford's "Sun Paints Rainbows on the Vast Waves." The textures and timbres of the wind band are portrayed through the groups' costumes and flags, which are modified throughout the show to illustrate both the suppression and the celebration of color. Culminating in a dazzling frenzy of the full chromatic spectrum from red to violet, Kinetic 2007 promises to make a vivid splash on the scene!

Kinetic is closing up performance spots fast but will gladly welcome new candidates and volunteers!

1968 Surfers Member Roster Found another tidbit in the old archives. A little banquet program noting the 1968 Surfers 10th place finish in Class B at the Lynn, MA World Open (highest finish up to that date) and a 1st Place in Class B at the Yankee Circuit Championship at Agawam, MA. Also in the program was the Surfer’s roster with notes on who played what – don’t know if they are correct, but I figured I would show them anyway…

Stroll Down Memory Lane…

It’s always fun to look back in time and reminis. The Surfer’s show programs below can do just that. One came out of the newsletter editor’s personal memorabilia and the second was purchased a few months ago by same on eBay! So let’s take a look and see if you S.A.A. members remember…

July 6th, 1969 – Veteran’s Field in New London, Connecticut – the Annual Drum Corps Along the Thames. A nice line up of Class A corps were the featured presentation this night. There was 3 corps in exhibition: the Fletcher Raiders and the Fire-ettes, both from Norwich, CT, and the host corps the Surfers of New London. There was 5 corps in competition, with the final results: 1st Score 77.35 – St. Lucy’s (Newark, NJ) 2nd Score 76.70 – Shoreliners (Milford, CT) 3rd Score 75.70 – Warriors (New York, NY) 4th Score 70.65 – Knickerbockers (New York, NY) 5th Score 59.70 – Crusaders (Brookhaven, PA) Also scribbled in this show program were: Best Bugle Line – Warriors Best Drum Line – St. Lucy’s Best Color Guard - Knickerbockers

May 29th, 1976 - Preview of Junior Champions at New London High School. The early show date was probably the first competition of the year for many of the corps. In exhibition were the Montville H.S. Band, the Surfers, and the Whalers.
