welcome to downtown Got some time on your hands? Looking for a broad and diverse range of fun things to do? Try Downtown! If you think a shopping spree offering an almost endless array of conventional or eclectic articles from an ever expanding assortment of mall oriented or street front shops may be the answer, then put on your walking shoes and start the adventure. You’ll find a complete spectrum of price and fashion throughout our Downtown. Ok, so now your feet are tired. How about just sitting back and relaxing while you take in a movie at the multiplex or catch the very best theatre, music or art exhibits in Downtown’s Citadel Theatre, Winspear Centre Concert Hall or the Art Gallery of Alberta, all world class venues and all in a row in our impressive Downtown Arts District. You’ve been busy so now you must be hungry; and you couldn’t be in a better spot! Downtown Edmonton is a food lover’s dream. It doesn’t matter which way you’re facing, just start walking and within minutes you can be enjoying any of a vast selection of home grown or international coffee houses, casual and funky local cafes serving mouthwatering treats, or the very best fine dining that you could experience anywhere in the world. Truly something for everyone and there’s no need for cars or taxicabs; they’re all within walking distance in our Downtown. Now that you’ve had a taste of the vibrant, exciting lifestyle in the heart of our City, maybe it’s time to take a tour of some of the really beautiful condos and lofts that are springing up throughout the core. The explosion of non-stop residential construction over the last few years has nearly tripled our Downtown population and more people living Downtown is a guarantee of even more retail and restaurant choices; it just gets better and better. And, no matter who you are, you won’t feel out of place because our residential boom has included a wide range of retirement complexes, condos and lofts filled with empty nesters and young professionals, rental accommodations for all income levels and even a massive student residence to house some of the more than 50,000 students coming into the Downtown each year. There’s absolutely no doubt that our Downtown has a far more diverse residential demographic than you’ll find in any other neighborhood in the city. Now you know why Downtown is the “preferred place to live, work, shop, play and learn” – make it your preferred place.

Jim Taylor, Executive Director Downtown Business Association

Walk in the footsteps of the pioneers beginning at the Alberta Legislature, the original site of Fort Edmonton. Then follow Heritage Trail — identified by its red brick pavers — 109 Street and 99 Avenue and go east for a journey through the past. Along the trail you’ll see Edmonton’s first schoolhouse, grand public buildings, and the historic Freemasons’ Hall. Stop along MacDonald Drive at the outdoor “Interpretive Gallery” for picturesque views and a self-guided tour through more of Edmonton’s rich history.

Louise McKinney Riverfront Park

Louise McKinney was the first woman elected to a Canadian Legislature, and a member of the “Famous Five” who in 1927 asked the Supreme Court whether women were “persons” under the law. This 15-hectare park named in her honour is built into the north shore of the North Saskatchewan River. Walkways connect the Shaw Conference Centre and the Cloverdale Footbridge, and a five-metre promenade parallel to the North Saskatchewan River, connects the River Valley trail system. The Chinese Garden in the north-east corner of the park is a colourful celebration of the Chinese Community’s heritage in Edmonton. The Shumka Stage hosts dance and music performances during the warm months

Ribbon of Steel

This multi-use trail for pedestrians, cyclists and joggers was the former CP Rail Lands north of the High Level Bridge. The Ribbon of Steel corridor extends from 97 Avenue to Jasper Avenue (between 109 and 110 Streets), connecting with existing trails on the High Level Bridge and through the Railtown community. It includes landscaping, lighting, rest areas, and interpretative features. On the weekends, take a ride in the historical streetcar which runs from Downtown to Old Strathcona over the High Level Bridge.
