DOWNTOWN BUSINESS ASSOCIATION OF EDMONTON

ABOUT US MISSION STATEMENT The Downtown Business Association of Edmonton (DBA) promotes Downtown Edmonton as the preferred place to live, work, shop, play, and learn.

WHAT DOES THE ASSOCIATION DO? The DBA represents nearly 2000 businesses located in the heart of our city, between 95 Street to 111 Street, and from 97 Avenue to 104 Avenue. The Association works closely with the City of Edmonton, the business community, and members of the public on major initiatives that affect Downtown. The DBA promotes Downtown through various advertising campaigns using both traditional media like television, radio, and print; various social media initiatives; and a user-friendly website. The DBA produces large public events that enrich the life of the community including Downtown Dining Week and Christmas on the Square Holiday Light Up. In addition The DBA sponsors dozens of festivals and special events that add excitement and vibrancy to the Downtown Core. The DBA is one of Edmonton’s 13 Business Revitalization Zones (BRZ), and was created in 1985 under the Municipal Government Act.

WORKING WITHIN OUR MANDATE THE DOWNTOWN BUSINESS ASSOCIATION CONTINUES TO: • • • • • • •

Provide strong support for economic development through the Business Recruitment Committee. Encourage City Council to adopt and fund initiatives such as the Façade & Street Front Improvement Program, Capital City Clean Up Program, and the Catalyst Projects contained in the Capital City Downtown Plan. Encourage an effective transportation network both into and within Downtown, with an emphasis on Public Transit initiatives. Assist in the implementation of arts and cultural programming including The Art & Design in Public Places Program. Work with the City of Edmonton’s Planning Department on streetscape beautification projects like the 104th Street Promenade, Capital Boulevard, reclaiming of Jasper Avenue as Edmonton’s main boulevard, Metal Banner Sculpture Projects, and Bloomin’ Boulevards curbside flower program. Be involved in major City Council initiatives such The Capital City Downtown Plan, The On-Surface LRT Expansion throughout Downtown, and a major Pedestrian Wayfinding project. Work with the City and key stakeholders to deal effectively with the real and perceived issues of cleanliness, safety, and security in the Core. This includes partnering with agencies on important programs like Downtown Proud, an enterprise funded by the business community employing clients of a social service agency to clean up litter in the core year round.

welcome! Whether you’re a tourist visiting our great city for the first time, or an Edmontonian making an occasional visit to the core, you’re probably amazed at the sheer number of new buildings sprouting out of the ground, pushing their construction cranes skyward; buildings soaring to heights nearly twice that of our existing towers. Downtown Edmonton is in the middle of a renaissance. These changes — including the new Arena District which opens in just over a year — are historic both in scope and the rapidity with which they are progressing. They touch all demographics including students, residents, workers and visitors. The new office towers, the hotel topped with luxury condos, and other entertainment venues already underway with more planned, are worth a visit to Downtown just to see first-hand what our city centre is morphing into. And the amazing energy generated can, and should be, considered a part of your Downtown experience. The cranes and hording should not stop you from experiencing all Downtown has to offer: the diverse new retail shops and commercial offerings, green spaces, first-rate hotels, festivals and special events, as well as the innovative restaurants in our Dining District, some recently recognized as best in the country. Come to the heart of our City and see for yourself how Downtown Edmonton, already the preferred place to live, work, shop, play and learn, is changing for good. For good because it’s changing rapidly into something so much more exciting; and for good because our Downtown is growing up and will never be the same.

Jim Taylor, Executive Director Downtown Business Association

THE RIVER VALLEY Edmonton’s River Valley boasts the longest stretch of urban parkland in Canada. With 30 km of trails, it’s perfect for joggers, cyclists, cross country skiers, or those who like to take a walk through nature’s wild beauty. Access the River Valley using the stairways next to The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald, The Shaw Conference Centre, Louise McKinney Riverfront Park, or The Crowne Plaza Chateau Lacombe.

THE ALBERTA LEGISLATURE GROUNDS 108 Street & 99 Avenue The Legislature grounds offer 23 hectares of paths and walkways that include wading pools, a skating rink, picturesque gardens, and refreshing fountains. Families gather at the wading pools on warm summer days, while newlyweds and graduates pose for photos on the steps of the Legislature. One of the best places for people watching in the summer!

LOUISE McKINNEY RIVERFRONT PARK Louise McKinney was the first woman elected to a Canadian Legislature, and a member of the “Famous Five” who in 1927 asked the Supreme Court whether women were “persons” under the law. This 15-hectare park named in her honour is built into the north shore of the North Saskatchewan River. Walkways connect the Shaw Conference Centre and the Cloverdale Footbridge, and a five-metre promenade parallel to the North Saskatchewan River, connects the River Valley trail system. The Chinese Garden in the north-east corner of the park is a colourful celebration of the Chinese Community’s heritage in Edmonton. The Shumka Stage hosts dance and music performances during the warm months.

HERITAGE TRAIL Walk in the footsteps of the pioneers beginning at the Alberta Legislature, the original site of Fort Edmonton. Then follow Heritage Trail — identified by its red brick pavers — on 109 Street and 99 Avenue and head east for a journey through the past. Along the trail you’ll find Edmonton’s first schoolhouse, grand public buildings, and the historic Freemasons’ Hall. Stop along MacDonald Drive at the outdoor “Interpretive Gallery” for picturesque views and a selfguided tour through more of Edmonton’s rich history.

RIBBON OF STEEL This multi-use trail for pedestrians, cyclists and joggers was the former CP Rail Lands north of the High Level Bridge. The Ribbon of Steel corridor extends from 97 Avenue to Jasper Avenue (between 109 and 110 Streets), connecting with existing trails on the High Level Bridge and through the Railtown community. It includes landscaping, lighting, rest areas, and interpretative features. On the weekends, take a ride in the historical streetcar which runs from Downtown to Old Strathcona over the High Level Bridge.
