A Message from the CEO

Icannot believe that I am sitting down once again to review our past year, as with the old cliché “time flies when you’re having fun”. My addition to that statement is “… and saving lives”. 2011 marks my 10th year in animal welfare. A decade in the shelter under my belt, and I’m tremendously proud of that accomplishment and of our organization. What I found this year, more so than most years, is how much we as an organization embraced and lived our mission and vision statements, which were re-developed in 2010. Those statements were very powerful and motivating in many of the day to day decisions we made on behalf of companion animals. In May we “enlightened people and enriched lives” during the Slave Lake disaster response. Our shelter made a tremendous difference for the animals and the people in one small northern community in Alberta.

We demonstrated our willingness to work “through partnership and innovation” by inviting the founding members of the Alberta Companion Animal Coalition to our shelter for the inaugural

meeting of many rescue groups, humane societies, SPCA’s and individuals concerned with animal welfare in Alberta. We are hopeful that this Coalition will develop into a strong, united group working together for Alberta’s animals. As part of being “committed to helping homeless and abused companion animals” we found more homes for more felines. More cat adoption programs were created. Eight events to further enhance our already thriving adoption program. More families were completed.

We proudly “lead the community in elevating peoples’ beliefs, attitudes and behavior” by guiding Paradise Pet Centre through the process of eliminating the retail sale of puppies, kittens and rabbits through their store. They now serve as an adoption centre for rescued animals from the Edmonton Humane Society and other rescue groups. And we were just thrilled later in the year when PJ’s Pets followed their lead. Animals from beyond our borders experienced an “enhanced quality of life” by finding their homes here in Alberta through our active Animal Transfer Pro-

Onbehalf of my fellow Board members, I am pleased to present this year’s Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) annual report.

Your Board has worked hard this year to continue providing guidance and governance to the shelter, based on our vision and strategic goals re-developed in 2010. We are very proud of how our CEO and through her, the entire organization have embraced the mission and vision that we have set out. These guiding principles have been crucial for improving the quality of life for the shelter animals and for the animals in our community.

I want to take a moment to acknowledge the service of my fellow Board members, and to thank those who are now completing their terms on the Board. Your contributions to the society, and to animal welfare, are greatly appreciated.

We are very pleased with the Society’s accomplishments, particularly in dealing with several unanticipated challenges that occurred this year. We are proud that several staff members and numerous volunteers were able to provide quick and effective response to animals caught in the Slave Lake fire that swept through that community.

gram. These transfers came to us from local rescue groups, groups within our Province, from Saskatchewan and Manitoba and as far away as California. In the end, more lives were saved.

From the dedicated staff to our wonderfully committed volunteers, the mission and vision were embraced throughout our organization for the benefit of our animals. And it was all made possible through the continued generosity of incredible supporters.

With gratitude,

Since moving into the new facility in 2009, the EHS has seen dramatic increases in admissions, year after year. Fortunately, this trend did not continue in 2011, with the numbers of animals admitted holding steady. Once again, through the innovation of the adoption promotional programs, the EHS was able to find 7,567 pets loving homes before the year’s end.

I am also very pleased to report that the Society maintains a solid financial footing to help and care for homeless animals in the Edmonton region. We owe this, in large part, to the generosity of our donors, and for that we extend our most sincere appreciation. You have helped us care for almost 13,000 animals this year.

The dedication of the staff and volunteers who run a compassionate organization with the welfare of the animals always at the forefront of all they do remains a source of great pride for the Board. Our thanks go to them as well.

Protecting Animals

The number of citizens calling our Animal Protection Department spiked significantly. Calls ranged from concerns about abandonment and lack of veterinary care to no food, water or shelter. In addition to the staggering increase in calls, our officers followed up on a significantly higher number of cases than in previous years. As cases increase in complexity, they require more follow up from our officers, demonstrating that this year was a challenging one for our Animal Protection Department.

Of the cases that went to court, one of the most disturbing involved several cats in horrible shape, found in a central Edmonton home. During the investigation our officers found over 30 starving cats, some also with severe cases of ear mites and serious urine burns on their paws due to the extreme dirty conditions. The bodies of six kittens were discovered as well, and all of the cats were removed from the house. EHS staff members were devastated when one of the cats died in the shelter overnight and the rest were humanely euthanized because of their extreme poor health and a severe lack of socialization, resulting in nearly feral behavior. Margaret Marie Trenholm pleaded guilty to a charge of causing distress to animals under the Animal Protection Act of Alberta, and was fined $2,000. She is also prohibited from ever owning animals again in Alberta.

• The Animal Protection Department received over 80 “Dog in Car” calls in the summer months, where dogs were left in the dangerous heat of parked vehicles. • A total of 34,995 kilometers were driven by our Animal Protection Department in 2011.

TheEdmonton Humane Society was vital to the Slave Lake animal rescue in May 2011. The morning after over 7,000 residents were forced to flee their homes due to a wildfire, we arrived on scene to aid the animal rescue efforts. Teaming up with the Animal Rescue Committee of Slave Lake, we helped rescue over 300 animals, after setting up a temporary shelter in Slave Lake.

Some residents of Slave Lake were evacuated to the Expo Centre in Edmonton, and our staff and volunteers were quick to set up another temporary shelter there to receive incoming animals. Animals were transferred in several trips from the Slave Lake shelter to Edmonton, and then were reunited with their owners.

In total, 11 staff members put in over 930 hours over five days during the disaster recovery effort. Our volunteers helped at the shelter and the Expo Centre, caring for 200-300 animals at a time, 24 hours a day, for 7 days.

This rescue effort was completed solely relying on our Disaster Fund. We are truly grateful to generous supporters for providing the means for us to respond; without them it would not have been possible for us to do what we did or to respond in the future.

Our Disaster Fund would have been completely depleted after the Slave Lake fire if not for the over $42,000 given to the Fund, by generous individuals, small businesses and corporations. Hill’s Pet Nutrition was one of our corporate contributors that gave an amazing $10,000 which purchased a trailer for our Animal Rescue & Response vehicle. Along with financial donations, countless supplies like food, crates, toys and more were brought to our shelter for the disaster response effort and for the human and animal victims of the fire.

The EHS recognized before, during and after the rescue efforts, the need for animal disaster response teams; as they are essential in situations like these. We were honored to be able to respond in this emergency and gained valuable experience for the future.

Community Community

The Humane Education Department grew even more this year, increasing our number of presentations and educating more people than ever before. The most popular month for presentations was October, during which a total of 5,809 students were reached! We also redeveloped some of our camps and after-school programs, and expanded Camp Sit. Stay. Play! dates to include the spring and winter breaks because of the program’s popularity. This was a success with excellent enrollment numbers, and students and parents seemed to enjoy this prelude to the larger summer camp program.

Communications

Amajor accomplishment for the Communications Department this year was our social media engagement on Facebook and Twitter. We saw massive growth in the number of people interacting with us on these websites and hits on our YouTube videos also steadily increased. New to the department this year was our weekly video update called “This Week at the EHS,” a review of the current events and special animal cases at our shelter, with staff interviews and more.

Did you know

• The EHS is in the local media, through news stories and TV visits, almost 7 days a week! Between radio, TV & newspapers, we have a great relationship with all local media to get our messaging out and promote our shelter.

two of our Canine Enrichment Centre’s (CEC) Training Academy launched, offering new training for people who want to work with dogs and puppies as a career.

Phase

The Dog Behavior and Training Methodology Certificate (DBTMC) graduated 14 participants in its first year!

Our Training Academy continued to offer both private and group dog training classes and developed new curriculum for additional classes including Senior Puppy Basics, High Flyers Disc, and Tracking Level 1. Canines and their owners could also challenge themselves by completing the Canine Good Neighbor Exam though the CEC Training Academy.

The Katrina & Friends Dog Day Care continued to be wellattended, hosting over 120 dogs per month. There was even a waiting list because of its popularity.

The Behavior Department developed and launched a pilot program which allowed owned dogs to interact with shelter dogs in a play setting. Our Dog Play Group Therapy Sessions provided owners with a new and unique way to socialize their dogs. These sessions helped owners learn about play styles and behaviors, and helped their dogs burn off energy. The benefits were proper interaction for the owned dogs and great play for our shelter dogs at the same time! This innovative pilot program was highly successful with over 20 dogs and their owners attending.

Animal Health

Healing hearts & helping minds

prevention continued to be front of mind for our Medical Department. Approximately 30 cases of Parvovirus in canines and 20 cases of Feline Distemper were successfully managed without these deadly and highly infectious diseases spreading throughout the shelter. Cases of Upper Respiratory Infections and Kennel Cough remained low but fluctuated depending on the animal population. This is an impressive feat given that during the busy summer months, the EHS often had upwards of 700 animals in care each day.

Disease

There has been an increased demand for more extensive dental care for the animals admitted to us and the purchase of a new digital dental x-ray unit has improved the ease and accuracy of dental diagnoses. Extractions and cleanings are performed much more efficiently with this new tool, allowing us to perform more dental procedures.

We continue to expand our options for surgical correction of various injuries and conditions, such as broken jaws, fractured legs or hips, burns, ulcerated eyes, a mangled paw, dog bite wounds, or a bullet embedded in bone. The surgical procedures to repair these concerns can be complex although amputations continue to be the most common as the majority of the animals we see with orthopedic injuries were injured quite a while previously and actual repair is unfortunately no longer possible. We have performed a variety of other procedures including femoral head ostectomies (a procedure where the head and neck of the femur is removed from injured hips), cruciate repairs, fracture repairs, bladder stone removals and eye enucleations.

The Medical Department continued to welcome a steady stream of foreign trained veterinarians working toward full licensure or wanting extra surgery experience through the year. These veterinarians work under the supervision of our experienced shelter veterinarians and develop into a real asset and increase the number of surgeries that can be performed. The EHS is proud to act as a ‘teaching hospital’ and is becoming well-known in the veterinary community for helping veterinarians gain excellent surgical experience.

Behavior

The Behavior Department introduced two new behavior modification and enrichment programs to our shelter animals with great success:

The first is Tellington TTouch (TTouch). TTouch has allowed us to work more effectively with all species of animals, and has proven very successful in rehabilitating fearful and anxious animals. This tool has been very beneficial in aiding with behavior modification and has been extensively implemented throughout the shelter.

The second technique, called Early Neurological Stimulation, involves exercises that have important and lasting positive effects for newborn puppies and kittens. This program was designed by Dr. Carmen Battaglia, and uses handling and position manipulation to stimulate neurological pathways. This technique helps the puppies and kittens to develop appropriate social behaviors, problem solving skills, and immune systems; making them healthy, well-adjusted adult dogs and cats.

Our Behavior Department had a lot of success stories this year, starting with a very large group of dogs rescued from an elderly owner, who had acquired far too many to care for properly. The EHS Animal Rescue & Response team deployed on New Year’s Eve and brought the animals to the shelter. These dogs were fearful and under-socialized, and did not even know how to walk on a leash. Our Behavior staff members extensively socialized these dogs, and most of them were successfully re-homed.

In June, we accepted a large group of Greyhounds into the shelter through our Animal Transfer Program. These dogs were seized from a neglectful situation in Saskatchewan and had been used to hunt coyotes. Our Behavior Department further researched Greyhound behavior to enhance their knowledge. They spent a lot of time assessing and socializing the dogs and modifying their behavior. Most of these dogs have since been adopted or transferred into breed-specific rescue groups.

Did you know

In 2011…

• 3,594 dogs and puppies were evaluated by the EHS Behavior Department

• 3,721 dogs got out for playgroups and socialization

• 1,793 dogs were worked with on behavior programs

• 180 hours were spent enriching cats and small animals

• 155 hours were spent doing TTouch on dogs and puppies

TheEHS continues to have the most amazing and dedicated volunteers around – with over 1,000 people contributing their time to our animals and our shelter.

This year our Volunteer Department welcomed several groups of corporate volunteers, successfully engaging companies and their employees with our shelter. Both Telus and BioWare employees participated in animal enrichment.

Our volunteers also played a huge role in May during the Slave Lake disaster relief work, not just at the EHS but at the Expo Centre temporary shelter as well. Among a diversity of duties, they were responsible for feeding, cleaning and caring for the animals that were displaced due to the fires, working round the clock for several days.

• 1,357 animals were fostered by our volunteer foster families. If you added up the total hours all animals spent in foster care, it would be 31,949 hours! That’s over 3.6 years total – fit into just ONE year!

• The EHS Volunteer and Behavior Departments worked together to develop a system for volunteers to know how much time each animal has spent outside of its kennel every day. This allows the volunteers to see which animals have gone outdoors and for how long.

Companions Companions support from our constant

Thecommunity support for the EHS continues to awe us. The generosity of individuals, families, small businesses and corporations allows us to accomplish our life-saving work each year, and this past year was no exception.

Our signature event, Pets in the Park, Edmonton’s official pet festival, was attended by an estimated 10,000 people and their pets. We all had fun in the sun and successfully raised almost $138,000 for the care of our shelter animals. We are incredibly grateful to our hard-working participants, as well as our supporters, sponsors, exhibitors, vendors, and demonstrators who also took part in the event. And speaking of fabulous events, the 4th Annual Coventry Homes Paws and Claws Gala, held in October, was a massive success! It sold out quickly and raised well over $80,000!

We are also incredibly thankful for our supporters who give in other ways, whether they donate an item from our Wish List or make a bequest in their will. The EHS Fund Development Department continues to work with our donors to find meaningful ways for them to contribute.

The EHS is very proud of those who take initiative to coordinate their own fundraisers, coming up with creative ways to generate funds for our shelter animals - from bake sales to a realtor donating a portion of their sales.

To everyone that supports our shelter, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You help us to save lives.

Dear Edmonton Humane Society;

We’d like to share with you our wonderful experience of adopting two kittens from you in October of 2011 and how it has helped teach our three children about responsible pet ownership.

We visited your shelter three or four times before finally falling for 3 month old kittens Zara and Teddy. We chose to visit a few times before we adopted to help the kids understand why a place like the Humane Society exists. We talked at length with the kids about why it was not a good idea to buy a pet on a “whim” and how many of the animals in the shelter were there for that very reason.

While talking about this we explained that it was very important to understand the responsibilities of raising and caring for a pet. Since we already had two dogs they understood that there was work involved and that it was very important to choose a kitten or cat that was going to fit with our family. They fell in love with a few of the kittens from our first visits, and then had to go through the emotions of seeing them get adopted by others - not ideal but a good lesson in the emotional attachment that we would feel once we made them a part of our family - and a taste of what it might feel like to have to give up a pet.

The blessings we have are too numerous to count and that is why we feel very strongly that it was important to bless others, in this case animals, by giving a home to a kitten (or in our case, kittens) that otherwise wouldn’t have one. We understand that these animals don’t choose to be here and that although the Edmonton Humane Society is an amazing place and we are very blessed to have it in our community - the animals will ultimately be able to flourish in a home where they become part of a family!!

The facility is first class, and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. It is truly a gem in our community and a cause that is dear to our hearts. We loved every minute of our time spent there and will continue to visit whenever we get the chance.

Sincerely,

letterLove Love edmontonhumanesociety.com 13620 – 163 Street | Edmonton, Alberta T5V 0B2 | 780-471-1774 18
