PLACE FOR CONCERTS EDMONTON JOURNAL READERS’ CHOICE AWARD GOLD WINNER
Winspear Centre leaves the stage I fatthethespotlight Winspear Centre, it’s
never for very long. The awardwinning venue hosts more than 380 events a year, and is home to the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra (ESO) and vocal group, Pro Coro Canada. The vision for the centre began with Dr. Francis G. Winspear, a British-born Canadian, and lives on in the hearts of Edmontonians. Dr. Winspear’s donation to the Edmonton Concert Hall Foundation made history as the largest single private donation ever made to a performing arts organization in Canada. The Winspear Centre is the Edmonton Readers’ Choice Award winner for Best Concert Venue in 2014. As director of community relations, Michael Schurek is part of a team that makes sure there is something for everyone at the Centre. “We make live music accessible to everyone, servicing the Greater Capital Region and Northern Alberta. Symphony for Kids and the Live at the Winspear series are two examples that continue to enrich a cross-section of communities in Edmonton.” After the centre’s grand opening festival in September 1997, it quickly gained global attention for achieving an intimate concertgoing experience—there are just over 1900 seats in the hall, and no seat is farther than 30 metres from the stage. However, the Winspear Centre offers more than a desirable seat in the hall. The on-stage experience is something sought after by artists around the world. Tony Bennett dubbed the Winspear one of his top five because of the superior acoustics. The Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, David Suzuki, Sarah McLaughlin,
The Winspear Centre is a cornerstone in the Edmonton Arts District. Along with our partners the Citadel, AGA, Edmonton Public Library, Edmonton Opera and Alberta Ballet, we create a more vibrant downtown. —Michael Schurek, director of community relations
and John Legend represent only a handful of the amazing artists, presenters, comedians, and thinkers who graced the stage in 2014 alone. The Winspear team is dedicated to artistic development, event management, subscriptions, and educational outreach. “The Winspear Centre is a cornerstone in the Edmonton Arts District,” says Mr. Schurek. “Along with our partners the Citadel, AGA, Edmonton Public Library, Edmonton Opera and Alberta Ballet, we create a more vibrant downtown.” There is no doubt the Winspear Centre will continue to fulfill Dr. Francis G. Winspear’s dream “To have a place where the people of our region can make the most beautiful music they are capable of—and share it with each other.” For more information about the Winspear Centre, to view upcoming calendar of events, and to order tickets, visit winspearcentre.com, or download the Winspear Centre app for Android or iPhone. EDMONTON JOURNAL READERS’ CHOICE award WINNER
West Edmonton Mall West Edmonton Mall – Never the same place twice. Edmonton is the kind of city where we often let our visitors brag about the great things we have here. West Edmonton Mall is no exception. We hear news and statistics from time to time, but when you step back and really look at West Edmonton Mall, you know it’s truly one of the most special places in Canada, and the world for that matter. It’s still the largest shopping centre in North America. And it’s held the distinction of being the number one tourist attraction in Edmonton and in Alberta for decades. The number of visitors that come to the mall continues to grow. West Edmonton Mall now hosts over 30-million visitors a year. People from out of town and out of country love it for its sheer size and variety of stores and attractions. Edmontonians love it because it continually reinvents itself and it’s never really the same mall twice. You have to shop it to believe it. The philosophy behind the success of West Edmonton Mall is to continually offer visitors amazing new shopping experiences. The list of exclusive stores continues to grow and evolve. Whether it’s the introduction of the innovative Simons in the mall’s west end in 2012, or adding exclusive shops such as Tiffany & Co., DKNY and kate spade new york, it continues to set the bar high. Future tenants include stores such as UGG Australia and Desigual—two worldwide brands bringing the best to Edmonton. The fun never ends. No conversation about West Edmonton Mall would be complete without mentioning its incredible attractions. Almost everyone is familiar with the world’s largest indoor waterpark, featuring over 17 unique waterslides and play features and the biggest indoor wave pool on earth. And there’s the world’s largest indoor amusement park at Galaxyland, with over 24 rides and play areas, but did you know
that West Edmonton Mall also holds the official designation of being host to one of Alberta’s zoos? It’s true. The mall’s Sea Life Caverns is home to more than 100 species of fish, sharks, sea turtles and marine life. And the California sea lions amaze and entertain guests every day at Sea Lion’s Rock. A great place to unwind. Guests who visit and stay at the mall rave about its diversity. After experiencing a day of shopping or an afternoon at the Ice Palace, World Waterpark or Galaxyland, there’s a world of choice for dining and relaxing. Bourbon Street is the place to go to catch the game, meet friends or have a quiet dinner. If you’ve never stayed at Fantasyland Hotel, you don’t know what you’re missing. There are over 355 guest rooms, including luxury suites and, of
EDM00627316_1_1
course, 12 different styles of theme rooms, among them the all-new Polynesian Room, which will make you feel like you’re on a Hawaiian holiday. Rediscover the magic. Some of the best experiences visitors share with the mall come from people right here in Edmonton. Many have decided to put on their tourist caps and take a minivacation right in their own backyard at the mall. They see the mall with fresh eyes, the way a tourist would, and fall in love with the shops and attractions all over again. If you haven’t been to the mall in a while, you might be surprised at all the great new stores, restaurants and attractions you’ll find. That’s one of the best things about West Edmonton Mall. It’s always changing and making the experience for visitors better than ever before.

AUTO DEALER - NORTH AMERICAN EDMONTON JOURNAL READERS’ CHOICE AWARD WINNER
Sherwood Ford
Ford is nicknamed S herwood “The Giant”—and it definitely
towered over the competition in this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards, winning the top favourite in the New Auto Dealer Domestic category. With a history in Edmonton and area going back to the 1930s—it’s been in Sherwood Park since 2011— a mixture of superior customer service and diverse inventory are two things that make Sherwood Ford stand out, says president Mark Hicks. “We’ve had as much as $64 million in new inventory on the ground at one time,” says Hicks. “If you’re looking for a Ford Vehicle we will have it, with the equipment you want, and in the colour you desire.” Sherwood Ford’s main location covers more than nine and a half acres, with another eight acres of off-site storage. That large inventory base helped In September, as Sherwood Ford ranked third in all of North America for Ford F-Series Retail truck delivery. But it’s the attention to service, and customers that have made the dealership really stand out among Journal readers. “Our staff is very professional and well trained in customer service—we don’t sell people cars, we help them buy cars,” says Hicks. “Our job is to simply help them find the right vehicle for their personal requirements. And if we do the job correctly and satisfy their needs, that customer will leave our dealership driving a new or used vehicle from us.” Sherwood prides itself on having sales staff that is committed to the brand. Perhaps none more so than Ed Solkowski, who recently
turned 80 and is still going strong in the showroom, Hicks says. While our primary market In fact, he’ll celebrate is here in the greater his 60th anniversary with the dealership Edmonton area, I think next spring. “He’s the longestpeople will travel for good standing employee of a service, a good price, and car dealership that we know of…anywhere— a good reputation. he still sells vehicles —Mark Hicks, president every day,” says Hicks. “There’s generally a lot of longevity here, we have dedicated knowledgeable employees, and you need to get an oil change, when you have that, you can build a winter tires installed, or even an team that gels well and makes sure engine replaced. To make things you can focus on good customer even more convenient, Sherwood service and happy people.” Ford introduced a “Rapid Service” After sales, service is also a on-site four bay facility this spring, passion of the dealership. With where no appointment is required close to 50 service bays open six for minor work, and customers days a week, and a large retail and enjoy a fast turn-around. commercial vehicle component, “Whatever is needed, we can fix there is little waiting required if it,” says Hicks, noting his service
department has multiple lifts that can carry up to 30,000 lbs. We have great service and parts management and our technical staff has incredible depth with unique specialization within our dealership to ensure proper diagnosis and repair. So our ability to service both consumer and commercial vehicles is unparalleled in our market he says. Sherwood Ford attracts customers from across Alberta. “While our primary market is here in the greater Edmonton area, I think people will travel for good service, a good price, and a good reputation,” Hicks says. “That’s part of being ‘The Giant’: we have the selection and the service that attracts customers to our dealership” While we have an incredible product line now “We at Sherwood Ford are also very excited about the future of Ford products with new 2015 models like the game changing all-aluminum F-150 coming soon, the new Edge, Expedition, Focus and the 2015 Mustangs, which are just now starting to arrive and are in our showroom now.” “On behalf of myself and our team, I’d also like to say thank you to our customers, we appreciate all the support we’ve been given and we really appreciate being recognized by the Journal and its readership as a great dealership, with very good people, and we will strive to continue to maintain and improve on that that in the future,” says Hicks. Sherwood Ford is located at 2540 Broadmoor Blvd. in Sherwood Park (at Petroleum Way). You can also call 877-2038476 or visit sherwoodford.ca.

INNER CITY CONDO TOWER EDMONTON JOURNAL READERS’ CHOICE AWARD GOLD WINNER
The Pearl E people
very year, more and more make Edmonton their home. We are a city plump with participators, doers, innovators and visionaries. It was a clear vision of condo living in Edmonton’s downtown and surrounding neighbourhoods that led our Edmonton-based company, Regency Developments, to become leaders in supporting infill communities in our thriving city. With 1500 brand new condominiums developed since 2008, Regency is just getting started. Years of dedication and creative architecture have contributed to our sold-out properties south of the river at Madison on Whyte and Serenity Gardens and downtown at Quest Condominiums and High Street District Properties. Edgewater Village on Jasper has 276 units rented and construction of both towers is well underway changing the city skyline on the east side. Standing proud to the west, the iconic 36-storey Pearl Tower is the jewel of Regency’s portfolio. But it is the rooftop patios, proud foyers, inviting courtyards, and attention to community integrity that set us apart, giving great present and future appeal to living a fulfilling life in our city. Regency builds with the intention of transforming our valued purchasers into neighbours and not just people who share an elevator. Our vision for growing Edmonton involves offering homebuyers a safe, quality investment, as well as a chance to take advantage of existing infrastructure and join and contribute to established communities. However,
the focus on infill developments comes with great responsibility. Regency listens to and invites conversation with the members of existing communities in which we build and we seek balance between city preservation and smart, insightful development to uphold Edmonton as a major city and meet community expectations. Our impressive Pearl Tower, now over 75 percent sold and within weeks of possessions, illustrates one example of successful community discussion; a public park is part of the private property to accommodate walkability in the area, features local art and offers a gathering place that reflects the values of the Oliver community. Three exciting new Regency projects will be breaking ground in the coming months: two in Edmonton’s core and another in the South which will offer buyers impeccable living space choices. The first of the three projects is a 244-unit condominium at 121 St., and 105 Ave., across the way from Regency’s sold-out High Street District properties. In the heart of the 124th Street community, development of the new concrete mid-rise complex, slated to commence November 2014, will feature modern-style architecture with a combination of six- and eight-storey structures. Buyers will have a choice of one- and two-bedroom units and a large central courtyard area to entertain friends and mingle with neighbours. The second concrete mid-rise development will also break ground in November 2014, just off 111 St., and Ellerslie Road. At this southern gateway, the
Ellerslie Road development will feature 105 units inside eight storeys with a roof-top patio, an attractive price point and a location with easy access to lifestyle amenities, schools and major thoroughfares, including Anthony Henday and the LRT at Century Park. The downtown buzz in 2014 has reached a new height. Increasingly, people venture to the core to work, find amazing meals, quality education, boutique fashion and a place to live. Regency’s third upcoming development will speak to the strong desire of many Edmontonians to live close to an increasingly vibrant community. The project will also continue Regency’s legacy of leaving a mark on Edmonton’s ever-changing skyline, which began with Pearl Tower, and will continue with this anticipated 40-storey, mixed-use development at Jasper Ave., and 113 St. Regency hopes to break ground in 2015. With these three new developments, Regency continues to build a reputation through their actions and the living spaces they create. We are not only part of the city’s new development, but part of the ongoing conversation in Edmonton about how to increase density and entrench lives in enriched, established communities, and change people’s perceptions about Edmonton’s future, not only as a place to live, but as the place to stay. Connect with a Regency Development team member at 780-497-1700 to find out more about Regency’s latest developments.

ith no shortage of furniture stores in the Edmonton area, it can be difficult to find one that stands out among the rest. “From our perspective, it starts with the product,” says Bill King, vice president of Ashley Furniture HomeStore. “We have differentiated ourselves from the masses by developing and displaying distinct Lifestyle Collections in our show rooms.” There are 13 Ashley stores in western Canada, with two of them located in Edmonton. And having invested in product development over the last few years, they have made it easier for customers to come in and get their homes set up with the use of these collections. “We are more than just pieces – we offer the complete room, making the shopping experience easier for our guests, who we know are very busy in their lives,” says King. And while other retailers deal with different vendors to supply their products, Ashley’s Lifestyle Collections all come from an internal design team on staff at the manufacturing level. Adds King, “They have a ton of market knowledge and have

done demographic research,” to find what works best for their customers. Consumer consistency, in terms of not utilizing any third parties, is also key, according to King. “From our advertising, to our in-store display, to our trained sales professionals, to the post-sale service – we provide a very consistent experience, and guests appreciate this.” In addition to the services they provide their customers, Ashley Furniture HomeStore is also committed to giving back to the community. Founded in 2010, the ‘A Hope to Dream’ initiative sets aside a portion of funds from each mattress that is sold. “We reach out to the community for nominations of children who might be in need of a good night’s sleep,” describes King. The funds collected from the sale of their mattresses are used to “provide beds to local kids in need.” This quarterly initiative will arrange for 250 beds to be supplied in Alberta alone. So not only can kids rest easy, but customers can, too, when they shop at Ashley Furniture HomeStores.

MOTORCYCLE SHOP EDMONTON JOURNAL READERS’ CHOICE AWARD WINNER
Cycle Works
New Showroom Now Open
its humble beginnings as a F rom 260 feet service bay and snow-
mobile machine shop, Cycle Works never would have imagined becoming the motorsports industry leaders that they are today. Now with five locations and numerous awards to their name, Cycle Works is honored that Edmonton Journal Readers voted for them. “It’s very humbling,” says Jay Padilla, partner and unit sales lead at Cycle Works. “We very much appreciate the recognition from Edmonton readers.” In 1980, Don Galloway founded Cycle Works when he opened a 260 feet service bay to build snowmobiles from the ground up. Passionate about motorsports, he built custom-made machines for his customers. Cycle Works has grown over the last 34 years to open locations in Calgary, Okotoks, Red Deer and west of Edmonton in Acheson. They’ve also won numerous awards, including their proudest achievement: an induction into the Polaris Hall of Fame in 2008. While the awards are nice, it’s not why they are in the business, says Padilla. The passion for the industry is what drives the people behind Cycle Works. Combined, department heads have 120 years of retail experience between them and partners form a unique ownership team that drives

their success. Motorsport enthusiast themselves, several staff members have been working with Cycle Works from the beginning, building the machine their customers love to ride. “There is nothing like the ultimate freedom that our industry brings to an individual,” says Padilla. “It’s just you, the open road or the open trail, and one hell of a grin.” What surprises Padilla is that, over the years, his customers have become his friends. By going for rides, he has created long-lasting friendships with his customers. Generations of customers are now coming to Cycle Works for their motorsports needs. Padilla has countless stories where kids, who would come in with their parents to look at machines, are now buying their own quads, snowmobiles or motorcycles. Having just expanded the business to include a second floor and an Indian motorcycles showroom, Cycle Works is thinking of the future and building the next 30 years of motorsports in Edmonton. Focusing on its love for the industry, Cycle Works provides customers with the machines they need to pursue their passions. LIVE THEATRE COMPANY EDMONTON JOURNAL READERS’ CHOICE AWARD WINNER
Mayfield Dinner Theatre F
or four decades, Edmonton’s Mayfield Dinner Theatre has been a favourite stop for both theatre-goers and culinary fans. “We are so excited that Edmontonians have chosen us for this award,” says Jessica Rogers, Mayfield’s marketing manager. “Edmonton has so much amazing theatre going on, but for a lot of people, the Mayfield is a local icon. They went to the theatre for special occasions: birthdays, anniversaries. We have ticket-holders that have been with us since the early days.” The theatre was started in 1972 in the then-Mayfield Inn and Suites. But the hotel recently underwent a renovation and rebranding. It is now the DoubleTree by Hilton. The theatre’s name, however, remains the same. “We wanted to pay our respects to history.” That said the Mayfield has certainly seen changes. In the past three years, the dining room has received new seating, sound equipment and buffet tables.
The famous prime rib hasn’t changed, but Chef Willie White has updated other dishes to reflect modern trends. “He’s using a lot more local and seasonal vegetables, meats and cheese,” Rogers says. “The salads have been redone, and the desserts, too.” However, the buffet’s legendary size hasn’t changed. “Our buffet is huge. It’s unlike any other buffet.” Indeed, the Mayfield offers experiences unlike anything else. Celebrities, including Jamie Farr and the Waltons’ Michael Learned, have graced the stage. And some of the world’s greatest plays — Chicago, Hairspray, Cabaret, and Driving Miss Daisy — have been performed on stage. “It’s so much fun,” Rogers says. “We’re thrilled that everyone loves our new changes.”

Sherbrooke Liquor Liquor Store is a family owned business offering S herbrooke Edmontonians a unique liquor shopping experience.
As “one of Canada’s best” and known as “the beer store” Sherbrooke Liquor Store boasts an impressive selection of beers, wine and spirits. As David Owens, one of the family owners will joke “if we don’t have it, we’ll find it and if we can’t find it, you don’t want it.” With the largest selection of craft beer in Canada, and one of the best collections of wine and spirits in Alberta, it’s a store that must be seen to believe. It’s easy to see why they are so popular in and outside their community and how Sherbrooke Liquor is just as passionate about liquor as their customers. Their attention to the customer is a significant part of their success. Besides having or finding a particular product, Sherbrooke Liquor runs two clubs; A Beer Club which runs outside of the store every quarter and an in house Wine Club. This is a great way to introduce people to unique products. If you’re not ready for a club, feel free to ask the staff questions. They are always willing to offer advice and help make your picks a worthwhile experience.

CAR WASH EDMONTON JOURNAL READERS’ CHOICE AWARD WINNER
Rock-N-Wash in the 1950s, the car wash Back was a social hub where cruisers
I’d like to thank the community at large for trusting us with their service and we look forward to growing this relationship as we move along. — Sylvain Blouin, founder and pPresi-
would gather to show off their fancy cars as the sounds of Elvis, Bill Haley and Chuck Berry filled the air. After just over a year in business, it won the top favourite in the Car Wash category in this year’s Reader’s Choice Awards. Thanks to how it invokes nostalgia for years gone by, it won the hearts of Journal readers. “The car wash industry has been operating the same way for years and years, so when I committed to joining the industry, I wanted to do it—as Frank Sinatra once sang—my way,” says president and founder Sylvain Blouin, who spent 20 years climbing the corporate ladder, including time at a Fortune 500 company, before leaving it all behind and going into the car wash business. “I’ve always had a passion for rock and roll music—it’s the authenticity, the 1950s and ‘60s cars—the ’57 Chev is my favourite. I wanted to create a fun environment, because I know going to wash a dirty car when it is -20 Celsius is not the most pleasant thing to do. So we try to create a bit of an experience here.” Besides the ‘50s-era trappings, Rock-N-Wash features state-ofthe-art car wash services, with an
automatic touchless system that can handle 85 cars per hour. There are also 12 drive-through advanced self-wash bays that feature a global patent-pending design. Several huge 110-foot truck and RV bays are available, too. “We’ve introduced detailing services, such as dry carpet shampooing, and our clients can put air in their tires in a warm, pleasant environment,” says Blouin. “We even have a vanilla-fresh scent dispenser.” After your car is Groovy Clean, you
can hop into Rock-N-Wash’s retail store, where you can find classic retro candies like Pez dispensers, Gold Mine nugget bubble gum and wax bottles, get a milkshake, or check out classic toys of the era like parachute soldiers. Rock-N-Wash offers special fleet accounts, with customized accounting software that lets owners keep track of how often

FITNESS FACILITY / GYM EDMONTON JOURNAL READERS’ CHOICE AWARD GOLD WINNER
No More Excuses More Excuses isn’t your typical fitness Nocompany, and that’s by design.
“There are no mirrors in our studio,” says Cheryl Schneider, founding owner of No More Excuses. “We are trailblazers in redefining what fitness should be. It’s not about how a person looks but rather how they take care of themselves and, ultimately, how they take care of others.” It’s no surprise that No More Excuses is winner of the Gold Award for fitness, as Schneider and her team’s commitment to promoting balanced living and making a difference in the community is widespread. Whether in their fitness classes, school programs, or fundraising events, No More Excuses’ first priority is to connect with people and create a joyful, energetic environment in which all can thrive. Their impact is felt around the city, which is a huge feat considering how small they are. And Schneider warns, “Those who join us should be prepared to be noticed and cared for,” as she and her team will contact members who miss classes, and then offer support where needed. Moreover, Schneider is also looking to expand and open two more studios - No More Excuses x2 in 2015 and No More Excuses x3 in 2016.

VIETNAMESE SUB SANDWICH EDMONTON JOURNAL READERS’ CHOICE AWARD WINNER
Nhon Hoa L unch or dinner has never tasted better than at Nhon Hoa Sandwich Bar, which has been serving its delicious Vietnamese subs since 1987. People drive from all over to enjoy Nhon Hoa’s fabulously fresh subs at two locations: 9718 106 Ave., and 10154 82 Ave. “Out recipes are authentic. You can basically order the same sub here you can buy on the streets of Vietnam,” says Stephanie Nguyen of Nhon Hoa Sandwich Bar. Nguyen says everything is made fresh daily right in the restaurants, from the head cheese to mayo, fresh fruit bubble teas, and their famous fresh-baked breads that are warm out of the oven. Then there is the mouth-watering menu with subs for all tastes, with prices starting from about $4. Anyone who is tired of the places they usually eat should come try the great food at Nhon Hoa. The cold cut combo with headcheese and Vietnamese sausage is considered a classic by many customers, while other people love the flavours of subs with sate beef or chicken, grilled meat, shredded pork and other tasty fillings. “We also have a lot of choices for vegetarians,” says Nguyen, to meet the needs of people looking for deliciously healthy meatless options such as a tofu sub or even a veggie sate sub that many customers absolutely love. The subs at Nhon Hoa Sandwich Bar also come with tasty toppings including fresh cucumber, pickled carrots, a sprig of cilantro, homemade mayo, and thinly sliced jalapeños, if they want added spiciness. Each location has a slightly different menu, with additional choices such as Vietnamese noodle soups and rice dishes. Nhon Hoa Sandwich Bar’s street food truck will have expanded hours when it resumes in April or May of 2015. Visit StreetFoodApp.com.

Irich (“everybody calls me “Dif there is one thing that Diet-

Kuhlmann — who moved to Canada from Germany after the Second World War — and his wife Elizabeth started farming on the outskirts of Edmonton in 1962, on a small chunk of rented land. Starting as a “pick-your-own”
KUHLMANN’S GREENHOUSE GARDEN MARKET
market, the business expanded over the years, as the Kuhlmanns added a greenhouse, garden centre and farm store. These days, they have a massive 300,000-square-foot greenhouse and garden centre, and, each spring and summer, they offer more than 2,000 varieties of perennials, trees, shrubs and bedding plants. In the summer and fall, they sell their produce — carrots, cabbage, potatoes, onions, beets, parsnips and more — at city markets and at their own Kuhlmann’s Greenhouse Garden Market. And every winter, Kuhlmann’s is famous for its festive and traditional Christmas Store. Loaded with tree ornaments, German cookies, baking and stollen, home décor and gifts
for everyone in the family, notes Kuhlmann. The market also offers all kinds of garden-related gear, food and products: Elizabeth’s legendary homemade sauerkraut, carrot pickles and beet pickles, local honey and preserves, British Columbia fruit, floral arrangements, gardening tools and seasonal décor. The Kuhlmanns’ two daughters and their husbands (Anita and Doug McDonald, and Dale and Angela Kruk) help operate everything, along with plenty of help from their adult grandchildren, too. Everyone has a role to play. Elizabeth is the official “bill payer and time keeper,” says Kuhlmann with a chuckle, while granddaughter Linda McDonald handles the social media and
website. Grandson Curtis McDonald is “the tree guy,” while Kuhlmann’s son-in-law Dale Kruk “We’re really thrilled that people enjoy coming here.” is the family’s handyroaming the floor of the greenman, because of “his many talhouse, offering advice to both ents with welding, carpentry, long-time and new customers. deliveries, potato harvesting “We want people to shop in and general maintenance of the nice surroundings, with a pleasfarm equipment.” Son-in-law ant ambiance,” he says. “And we Doug McDonald handles all the want knowledgeable staff and seeding, garden maintenance family members on the floor to and harvest, while his wife Anianswer all your questions.” “It’s ta McDonald is the greenhouse quite an honour to be selected,” manager. came Little Italy. It was a tiny store selling little more than soda, magazines and chocolate. But an influx of Italian immigrants, longing for cuisine from their homeland, led Spinelli to expand. Later, after a successful push to legalize homemade wine, his store became Edmonton’s largest supplier of Italian grapes. Today, the Italian Centre has a well-earned reputation for its spectacular deli, which features an amazing selection of meats, cheeses and antipasti. Furthermore, the Centre carries hard-to-find specialty imports from all across Europe, including: Poland, Croatia, the Ukraine, Serbia and more. As their website states, “the Italian Centre isn’t just a store, it’s an adventure.” Frank Spinelli was passionate about building communities and relationships. His motto, “the more you give, the more you get,” is a philosophy the current Italian Centre president, Frank’s daughter, Theresa Spinelli, upholds today through charitable support of organizations which promote “education,” “healthy lifestyle[s]” and European culture. In 2007, Theresa Spinelli expanded, opening a second Italian Centre, on 104A St. 50 Ave., complete with an adjacent casual Italian restaurant, Massimo’s Cucina Italian, named after her son. The third Italian Centre opened recently, in 2013, on 170 St., 90 Ave. But Spinelli has little desire to slow her ambiThe Italian Centre isn’t just a tion. The Canadian Brewhouse it’s the legendary fried M aybe pickles. Or the made-from-
scratch pizza — even the sauce and dough are created in-house. Or the many, many TV screens that broadcast every major Canadian sporting event. Whatever it is, the folks at The Canadian Brewhouse know a thing or two about how to create a winning business. The award is very special to all of The Canadian Brewhouse staff, says Karen Paulgaard. “It’s a big deal. We’re so excited,” says Paulgaard, marketing director for The Canadian Brewhouse. “Most of our locations are in Edmonton, and we love Edmontonians.” Indeed, Edmonton is where The Canadian Brewhouse started more than a decade ago. The concept was created by President Roger Newton in 2002, as a fun way to pay homage to his country. “He loves Canada and wanted to create something that really celebrates what it means to be Canadian,” says Paulgaard. There are 12 locations in Alberta, and the first Saskatchewan location opens Dec. 8. In Edmonton, The Canadian Brewhouse can be found on the south side, the north side and downtown, as well as in Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove and Leduc. Each incorporates Canadian sports memorabilia, history and humour. Here in Edmonton, that includes photos and memorabilia from the
Edmonton Oilers and the Edmonton Eskimos. “We really want to be a part of the community that we’re in,” Paulgaard says. “And we really appreciate our local history.” A large score clock is set up in every location, allowing staff to keep track of goals. And some locations have up to 60 — yes, 60 — big-screen television sets, allowing customers to see each game, no matter where they’re sitting. “No one has more TVs than us,” Paulgaard says with a chuckle. And if you’re one of those people who doesn’t want to miss even a second of the action? Request a speaker for your table. That way, even if most people are watching, say, the Oilers, you can still stay on top of the football game, too. As for a dress code, well, there isn’t one. Wear what you want. You’ll be welcomed, every time. “We’re always going to make you feel comfortable, whether you come in sweat pants, or you’re all dressed up,” she says. “We just want you to feel at home.”

PLACE FOR LIVE THEATRE EDMONTON JOURNAL READERS’ CHOICE AWARD GOLD WINNER
Citadel Theatre been at the top of H aving Edmonton’s theatre scene for
nearly 50 years, it’s no surprise that the Citadel Theatre is the winner among Journal readers. “The Citadel’s reputation for producing outstanding live theatre is well-established,” says Ken Davis, director of marketing and communications at the Citadel Theatre. “[We have] a mandate to bring the best of live theatre to Edmonton and to north-central Alberta, and we consistently do that.” Currently in the midst of their 49th season, the Citadel has launched a fundraising campaign for their 50th anniversary season, which is slated to begin in September 2015.
“[The Encore campaign’s] goal is to raise $5 million by start of the Citadel’s 50th anniversary season,” states Davis. “To this point, we are almost halfway there. Some of the money will be used to renovate the exterior of the Citadel complex; other funds will be used [for] new programming initiatives in the Citadel’s performance and development streams.” As the Citadel has always brought top-notch performances to Edmonton, the 50th anniversary season promises to maintain those high standards with a diverse lineup of first-class plays. “We are not quite ready to announce the full season,” says Davis, adding, “the one production we can
talk about is Evangeline, one of the most ambitious musicals ever to originate in Canada. Critics [have] compared it to Les Miserables for its historical breadth.” Given the Citadel’s history, theatregoers can be assured that the 50th anniversary season will be among their finest yet.

DRIVE-IN OIL CHANGE CENTRE EDMONTON JOURNAL READERS’ CHOICE AWARD GOLD WINNER
Mr. Lube you can trust. E xperts More Canadians
have continued to rely on the expertise and professionalism of Mr. Lube technicians. With eleven locally owned Mr. Lube locations in Edmonton, Canada’s #1 oil change provides a service based on trust - offering warranty-approved oil changes as well as a wide variety of other maintenance services. While Mr. Lube provides a ‘quick lube’ service, there is no sense of being rushed in and out. From the moment you drive in, you are greeted with a drink, a newspaper and the opportunity to discuss what brought you to see us before the technicians get to work. You’ll always have someone nearby to explain what is happening under the hood, and under your car. As part of every service, Mr. Lube performs a complimentary courtesy check which includes checking your air filter, cabin filter, emission PCV valve, battery and a dozen more items. They’ll also top up your fluids before you go! One element that sets Mr. Lube apart from other companies is their focus on building trust. One example of this is that they rely on the electronic owner’s manual (EOM) specific to your vehicle to notify the technician and yourself, what services your vehicle requires. Mr. Lube has access to the EOM of most manufacturers and most makes and models. This access ensures that services are provided at the right time, and that the right oil, filter, belt or fluid is being used. When you pull into a service
We have so many wonderful cars to thank, we don’t know where to start.
bay at one of the eleven local Mr. Lube locations, your vehicles EOM is showcased right outside your window on a monitor. If a service shows green, you have time before that service is required. A service that appears yellow indicates that you are close to an interval and may pass your manufacturer’s recommended service date before your next visit. If you see a service that appears in red, you’re due for that service and it’s recommend that you address that specific need, as your manufacturer suggests. So next time you’re in need of an oil change or any other maintenance services, visit one of their eleven locations open 7 days a week, and no appointment necessary.

Parkallen Restaurant W guests are greeted by numerous framed awards alking through the doors of Parkallen Restaurant,
and reviews. It’s no surprise that, with over 30 years as an Edmonton landmark, owner and chef Joseph Rustom is welcoming another recognition to his growing list. The restaurant opened its doors when Rustom’s parents founded Parkallen Pizza in 1982. Originally a steak and pizza joint, the menu evolved to include authentic Lebanese cuisine. As a family affair, Rustom and his siblings grew up working alongside their parents, by cooking, serving and delivering pizza. “As a family-oriented restaurant, the greatest reward I have is getting to spend time with my family,” says Rustom. Owning an independent eatery in Edmonton for over 30 years is not without its challenges. Opening their doors in the early 1980s, Rustom’s parents worked through the recession and watched Edmonton grow in boom years. Currently, with more people moving to the suburbs and the city expanding, Rustom feels that his small community restaurant is often forgotten. But it’s the food and sense of community that keeps his tables full most evenings. Rustom feels fortunate to have witnessed a couple of generations of Edmontonians come to Parkallen. Those he grew up with are now coming in with their own families for pizza or hummus. “It’s a landmark,” says Rustom. “We’ve set a standard for good authentic Lebanese cuisine in Edmonton.” You’ll find Parkallen Restaurant at 7018 109 St. For more information, visit parkallen.com or call 587-520-6401.

SUSHI EDMONTON JOURNAL READERS’ CHOICE AWARD WINNER
Kyoto Japanese Cuisine T
he joys of eating at Kyoto Japanese Cuisine are many: the takoyaki balls, the beef tataki, the steamed eggs, the pork cutlets with curry. Yet it’s their plentiful varieties of sushi that help contribute to this restaurant’s popularity. The downtown location of Kyoto Japanese Cuisine has been satisfying restaurant-goers since 2000, something that owner Tomy Wong is very proud of. “Teamwork and unity are the pride of our restaurant,” says Wong. “We believe that providing quality food and excellent service is essential.” With their convenient location and ample available parking, Wong estimates that 80 per cent of Kyoto’s clientele are repeat customers, with some visiting multiple times a week. Yet, thanks to word of mouth, many new customers also visit from out of town. “They come from places such as Red Deer and Calgary,” says Wong. “They’ve heard a lot of good things about our restaurant from friends
and family.” And while it’s impossible to try everything on Kyoto’s menu in just a few visits, Wong and his staff continue to review their menu twice a year, adding new items each time. “We are the only sushi restaurant to serve brown rice with quinoa,” says Tomy, adding, “Many ladies come in for it after their yoga sessions.” Moreover, Kyoto is intent on providing for customers with allergies and sensitivities. “We’re going to create a menu in 2015 specifically for customers with gluten allergies,” hints Tomy. No matter what your tastes or dietary restrictions, Kyoto Japanese Cuisine has delicious fare that is certain to please.

Sole proprietors and private maids don’t have that benefit. Also, Molly Maid has been in Edmonton for 28 years, building an excellent reputation one customer at a time, clean by clean, and backed by our guarantee.

Green cleaning from the professionals you trust!
— Barry Hudson, owner
Our Reader’s Choice survey had a lot of votes for maid service, and we asked Barry if the demand for service was high at Molly Maid. “Oh my goodness, yes,” he replied, “our growth chart looks like an escalator! People in Edmonton are busy – they volunteer a lot and spend many hours supporting their children at activities. It’s gratifying for Molly Maid to provide a service that really helps people with their daily lives. As the most recognized brand in the business, we’re soaring!” Asked if there were new trends in the maid service industry, Hudson had this to say… “We get asked more often now about green products. We changed our product line about 15 years ago, before the current demand, to environmentally responsible cleaning supplies. We direct people to our Molly Maid website to check out our ‘Green Housekeeping Program’. All the information is there.” “We appreciate the recognition,” he said, “and we love the positive comments we get from the thousands of cleans we do throughout the year. It’s all about providing reliable, consistent service and backing it with a guarantee. That’s why we are the top Molly Maid franchise in Canada!”

mere minutes from Edmonton. “Everyone is really proud of what we have to offer – we’re the largest local ski area, with one of the largest snowmaking systems in the province, and we offer the largest terrain park in northern Alberta,” says Derek Look, director of business services, adding Rabbit Hill is a great place for young skiers and snowboarders to experience the sport for the first time. “Families are a huge part of our business,” he says. “We offer seasonal equipment rentals and passes for families, so they don’t have to worry about lugging four sets of equipment from the car. We also have one of the largest ski schools around – upwards of 200 instructors.” To mark the anniversary, starting Dec. 8, Rabbit Hill launches 60 days of giveaways. Every day, guests will be eligible for prizes, with a grand prize of a trip for four to Jasper being awarded on Feb. 5, the anniversary day itself. Look says receiving the Readers’ Choice honour is a great way to mark the anniversary. “We always appreciate the feedback from our guests, and we appreciate them coming out and spending their time at Rabbit Hill,” he says. Mall is not your grandma’s antique store. “We often have movie companies, theatre groups and show-home designers shopping for pieces,” owner Betty Reitan said. “We have all the genres— everything from primitive, collectibles, western, oil and gas, shabby chic, French country and art deco.” In addition, the mall has a huge collection of records with a total of more than 25,000 albums. Reitan points out that the antique mall at 10323 78 Ave, just off Gateway Blvd., is a brightly lit location where the 125 vendors “take pride in designing their booths.” The attractive appearance helps in drawing people to the mall. Reitan said people come to the mall for everything from first dates to engagement and wedding photos. “I never anticipated that” when she purchased the business, Reitan said. “It’s become a destination.” She notices that there are customers who make regular visits to the mall. There’s also been a noticeable shift in the demographics of the clientele. “When I took over, most of the customers were in their 50s,” Reitan said. “Now, 50 per cent of the clientele is under 30.”

The flood of television shows that chronicle home renovations and how antiques can be repurposed have affected the mall’s success. Reitan said the mall has benefited from the shows with customers who are “either being green or have decided to repurpose old items.” It’s also a business that uses social media rather than just word of mouth. “We connect with our customer base via Facebook, Twitter and a monthly e-newsletter,” Reitan said. With 32 years in business, “it brings confidence to the client. It’s a very big investment and we want to make sure it’s going to work out for them,” says partner Aquilino Naccarato. Ackard works with its clients to come up with a workable design and budget, and its in-house team makes that design a reality, whether you’re adding a second storey or redoing your kitchen or bathroom. “We can both design and build,” says partner Richard Plamondon. “We have a strong team committed to getting it done. W
ith its version of a European-style open market, Sharon Armstrong, one of the co-owners in this local family business, says “that the success of Bunches Flowers is attributed to presenting flowers as a full sensory experience.” Different from the traditional florist model, every Bunches location creates a floral oasis, welcoming people in to smell the rich fragrances, enjoy the vivid colours, and even feel the texture of flowers from all over the world. The fresh flower inventory changes daily, and follows the seasons. Contacting brokers and ordering in flowers on a global platform means that “we ask our suppliers what’s lush and fresh today, what’s the most cost-effective… what is the best product available to offer to our Edmonton customers?” The staff’s training is a real asset here, a friendly guiding hand that suits the person’s needs. Armstrong laughs, “about 70 per cent of the men that come in here are immediately lost!” There is a lot of satisfaction derived from making the perfect bouquet for every customer, and through that, the building of long-lasting relationships. At first the mandate of the store was simply to bring flowers to the masses but “It’s evolved,” says Armstrong. “It’s become more about connections. We feel privileged to share in the joys and sentiments of people’s everyday lives. One day, we’re celebrating a baby’s birth and 20 years later our flowers are at the wedding of the same person! We’re just blown away by that. Thank you Edmonton for allowing Bunches to bring a world of flowers right to your doorstep!” For more information, visit bunchesflowers.com

(The Lingnan was the set of the family’s 2011 reality TV series, The Quon Dynasty, which still airs on Omni Television.)
“We spent most of our childhood here — peeling pea pods, packing orders, answering phones,” Miles says. “People come in that have known me since I was small, and now we’re seeing their kids and grandkids come in, too.” Miles plans to continue that tradition.
