Spirit of Edmonton breakfast Explores the Tastes of Alberta
By Sandra Marocco
Since its inception in 1975, the Spirit of Edmonton Grey Cup Committee has enthusiastically supported the Edmonton Eskimos football club, the city of Edmonton, the Province of Alberta and the Canadian Football League in all Grey Cup host cities around the country. In recent years, its scope has broadened to promote the city of Edmonton as Canada’s festival city and a great place to live, work and have fun. The Spirit of Edmonton Breakfast is a fan favourite at every Grey Cup, as it showcases exceptional talent with non-stop entertainment including live bands, CFL cheer teams, pipe bands, Spirit of Edmonton Castrol Dancers and, of course, the always-popular sluice juice. With over 35,000 satisfied customers, the tradition continues with two sold-out breakfasts this year on Friday, Nov. 26 and Saturday, Nov. 27. This year the Spirit of Edmonton joined into an innovative partnership with the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency (ALMA) and the Edmonton Journal to ensure that all food served at the breakfasts is sourced from Alberta producers. ALMA aims to help build a competitive, internationally respected and profitable Alberta livestock and meat industry. “Football enthusiasts love their meat and some of the best meat producers and products are found right here in Alberta," says Gordon Cove, ALMA President and CEO. "ALMA is proud to support the Spirit of Edmonton by offering you some of Alberta’s best meats." Simon Smotkowicz, executive chef at the Shaw Conference Center, has the impressive task of preparing breakfast for the 4,000 hungry football fans. "I often work with the Alberta food industry and so I know the super quality of their products. I think this is a great chance for us to celebrate the best of Alberta and to share it

with the whole country right here at home. Grey Cup week is about having fun. Every good party has great food and I am honoured to prepare and serve it to the guests at this year’s breakfasts." The star of the breakfast menu will be sausage supplied by Irvings Farm Fresh, from Vimy, Alberta. Their sausages are made by hand using prime Alberta pork and all-natural skins. Owners Nicola and Alan Irving are proud to share their product. “Like all good food, these meaty sausages taste great because the recipe is simple, the natural seasonings are light, and we use first-class, locally sourced ingredients," Nicola Irving explains. "These sausages contain no preservatives, no artificial flavours and no colourings or MSG. The meat we use is what most people use to make a roast for supper." For more information about Irvings Farm Fresh and where to buy their products, visit www. irvingsfarmfresh.com. The Edmonton Journal is similarly inspired to explore local products and will continue its work alongside the provincial agriculture and food industries with the December 1st launch of Taste Alberta. This editorial series will take readers on a journey throughout the province, sharing the abundance of local food and the characters who bring it to us. "Our readers are passionate about food and about their province," says Taste Alberta editor Kerry Powell. "This series is an opportunity to marry those interests and tell stories that celebrate the variety, ingenuity and quality of Alberta businesses and products." John Boucher, a member of the executive team for the Spirit of Edmonton, sees this as an excellent partnership for the future. “It’s great that we started this partnership here in Edmonton. We are excited to continue promoting Alberta food in cities all across Canada in years to come.”

booze brothers
The Booze Brothers have been attending the CFL’s Grey Cup celebrations for 25 years. The current crew is made up of fellows from BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. They get together once a year to celebrate CFL football wherever Grey Cup is being held. Travelling from East to West, they enjoy good times meeting CFL fans from across the country. Says one Booze Brother, “It’s about the party, the football, seeing friends we’ve made from previous years – it’s a big reunion and not a lot of sleeping involved.” They have fun wherever they go – whether attending parties, entertaining on stage and in the parade. The atmosphere at Grey Cup is “Party Canadian Style”. Given the Canadian November weather, dressing up in their suits complete with sunglasses and fedoras, can sometimes be a challenge to stay in “style”. They wear battery heated socks, touques under their fedoras, and multiple layers of underwear to stay warm in Canada’s extreme cold. Not to mention lots of coffee & baileys to keep warm! This year they will attend the CFL Player Awards and the Gala dinner as well as the parade, tailgate parties and the Spirit of Edmonton Breakfast and, of course, the Game. Asked who they hope will be playing in this year’s Grey Cup, “It doesn’t matter – we will be there to support CFL Football!”
