Our Mission

To care for cats in dire need and give our less fortunate feline friends a warm, loving and caring environment that allows them to live out their lives. To attempt to find loving homes for cats and kittens that come into our care. To promote responsible pet ownership through public education, early spaying and neutering programs and promoting other care programs.

It takes 450 lbs. of dry cat food, 75 cases of canned food and 800 lbs. of litter PER MONTH to take care of the hundreds of stray, abandoned and unwanted cats and kittens that The Hervey Foundation for Cats takes in at their facility each year. Many of these animals find new homes – BUT – many fall into permanent care at our facility.

Financial donations may be made by mail, phone, paypal or Canada helps.org! Donations may also be dropped off at City of Edmonton Animal Control at their new address!! 13550 163 Street. a note from

Marjorie

Dear Supporters,

Welcome to the Fall edition of the Mewsletter! We hope that everyone got through this very soggy, stormy summer, and hopefully we will be rewarded with a nice warm autumn season. Things have been busy for us here at the sanctuary. Along with the ongoing, but of course rewarding work of caring for the kitties, we have also been tackling some painting and renovation projects, as well as a lovely memorial garden for all the kitties who pass over the rainbow bridge. As always, we have had many sad calls of kittens being born under door steps and in people’s backyards and we have also noted an increase in the number of stray and abandoned cats. It is hard for us to get these calls, and such a tragedy for these poor creatures. I find myself wondering when people are going to start taking responsibility and get their cats fixed and keep them indoors. So many communities are in dire straits as the pounds and humane societies and rescues have no room. Many of these cats and kittens will become feral. We hope that many of you will come and visit with us at the Edmonton Cat Fanciers cat show on October 1 & 2 at The Edmonton Hotel and Convention Center at 4520-76 Ave. We will be there, with kitties available for adoption! We also have some of our T shirts available. Mostly x large size and still being sold for $15. We look forward to talking with many of you again. We also want to remind people that Halloween is on the way, so please be sure to keep your kitty in a safe place when the little ghouls and goblins start coming to your door. Cats can slip out the door in the blink of an eye! As always, we look forward to hearing from you, answering any of your questions and assisting with your cat problems as much as we can. As always, we are extremely grateful to you, our supporters, for helping us to help the kitties. THANK YOU!!

Rainbow Bridge Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, & our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill & old are restored to health & vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole & strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days & times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends the animals, especially for animals who are suffering;for animals that are overworked, underfed and cruelly treated; for all wistful creatures in captivity that beat their wings against bars; for any that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry; for all that must be put death. We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity, and for those who deal with them we ask a heart of compassionand gentle hands and kindly words.Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals, and so to share the blessings of the merciful.

Tough Talk About Keeping Your Cat & Allergies This article is not intended for people with life threatening allergies. It is intended for the people that have moderate to severe allergies.

O

ne of the most often given reasons for giving up a pet is “allergies”. This reason seems watertightas though there is no other option, and certainly no room left for argument. Or is there? Is it possible that this could instead be a manifestation of the “Me” society? In this article, we will explore some alternative options to giving your cat the boot. “Due to allergies” is one of the most frequent reasons given by people who are leaving their pets at humane societies, animal shelters and rescues. This is one of the most frustrating situations for these agencies to have to deal with, and also extremely heartbreaking for the animals. This “reason” is responsible for over half of the cats in North America that end up at rescues or humane societies. This is because we live in a society of Me people who are not prepared in any way to put themselves out a little bit in order to keep their cat. If you have allergies, but truly want to keep your cat-YOU CAN DO IT! Keep in mind-I (Marjorie Hervey) HAVE THE HIGHEST RATE OF ALLERGIES YOU CAN HAVE TO CATS COUPLED WITH BRONCHIAL ASTHMA! And I am able to daily care for the many cats who reside with us here at the Foundation’s sanctuary. Further on in this article we will offer you many suggestions to help you and your cat stay together. But first let’s examine what allergies are: An allergic reaction occurs when the immune system overreacts to common every day substances, which generally float under the radar of most people’s immune systems. The severity of reaction to these substances, called allergens, varies from one person to the next, ranging from mild sniffling and sneezing to life-threatening asthma and can be complicated by simultaneous allergies to other irritants in the environment. Allergies to cats are generally based on reactions to a certain feline protein, FEL-D-1. This protein is present in the animal’s saliva and urine and may become airborne when salvia dries on the

5

fur. Some animals seem more tolerable than others because they shed fewer allergens. However, unfortunately, there are no true hypoallergenic animals, and because allergic reactions are triggered by the protein secretions and not the hair coat itself, it is also a myth that the length of hair has any effect whatsoever on an animal’s allergenic properties. Within any given breed, or even litter you may find animals that you can tolerate better than others. Because allergies result from an overactive immune system, they are not just limited to one single allergen. If you are allergic to cats, most likely there will be many other allergens that you react to, but will not be able to get rid of. This is why you need to make an appointment with an allergist as soon as possible after a diagnosis of allergies, in order to find out everything you are allergic to. If you don’t know what they are, you will be unable to care for yourself properly in order to limit your reactions. This is also why people who get rid of their cats to “solve” their allergy problems often don’t experience the relief they thought they would, which is doubly tragic. Don’t just take the word of your family physician-see an allergist. Most people seem to think that a positive allergy test equals a terminal illness, a death sentence. And, quite often this is true-for the cat. However, for most people, with a little work, allergies can be controlled without getting rid of the cat. People who have allergies, whether it be to cats, or anything else, need to take responsibility for their own health. It is up to the person with the allergies to control and manage them. It is VERY selfish and irresponsible to expect family members, parent’s, and/ or friends to give up their cat because you are allergic. In the case of parents who have children

with allergies, it is your job to teach and help the child understand and manage their condition. Of course, as a parent, it is natural to want to just protect our children from everything, but it is important to resist that urge, and instead, give your children the proper tools and perspectives for managing their allergies. By doing so, we are breaking the cycle of the “Me society” and helping our children to be healthier, both physically, and emotionally. For example, I have had many grandparents here to surrender their cats because the new baby or other grand children are allergic, and the parents have refused to bring the grandchildren to visit unless the cat is gone. How sad, and selfish does this get? When the child(ren) get older and make friends, and have playdates and sleepovers, they will need to be able to deal with their allergies-not expect their friends to get rid of their pets! It has been noted in many medical studies that the first year of life is the most important time to expose your children to cats and dogs. By doing this, you may actually help your child’s body become immune to allergies! continued on next page

The responsibility to manage and control one’s allergies extends to many other situations in life. If you are suffering from allergies to poplar trees, for example, it wouldn’t be practical to expect one’s neighbors to cut down all the poplars in their yard. In this same way, it is ridiculous to legislate that responsible pet owners must stuff their cats in cargo, instead of bringing them on the plane, where they can be supervised and cared for properly, because there is a possibility that someone else with allergies could be on the plane. Being allergic doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t have a pet or that you must give up the one you already have. You can solve this problem by learning more about minimizing pet-related allergies and making some minor adjustments to your environment. Controlling allergies does take effort, but if you really want to, YOU CAN DO IT! Begin by creating an allergy free zone for the allergic person. The bedroom is the best choice, as that is where most time is spent. Use hepa air cleaners throughout the rest of the house and avoid dust and dander catching furnishings such as cloth curtains and blinds and carpeted floors. Clean frequently and thoroughly to remove dust and dander, washing articles such as couch covers and pillows, curtains and pet beds. Use a microfilter bag in the vacuum cleaner to effectively catch all the allergens. Wash your hands after petting and handling your cat to minimize the allergens you bring near your face can also help minimize reactions. Bathe your cat on a weekly basis. Your vet should be able to recommend a good shampoo so that you do not dry your cat’s coat out. You can buy pet wipes also, and wipe your cat down on a daily basis to help prevent the build up of dander and allergens on their coat. You should also be sure to feed the cat a high quality diet containing lots of Omega-3 fatty acids to keep their coat healthy and minimize dander.

Don’t be quick to blame your pet for allergies. Ask your allergist to specifically test for pet allergens, rather than making an assumption. Allergies are cumulative and allergy sufferers usually react to more than one allergen. If you are allergic to dust, insecticides, pollen and cat dander, you will need to reduce the overall allergen level in the enviroment, not just the pet allergy. Immunotherapy (allergy shots) can improve symptoms but will not eliminate them entirely. They work by gradually desensitizing a person’s immune system to specific allergens. Allergy causing proteins are injected under the person’s skin, triggering the body to produce antibodies (protective proteins) which block the allergen from causing a reaction. Patients generally

start out with one shot a week and then gradually decrease the frequency to once a month. Patience and perseverance are key here-I have had many people tell me that they took allergy shots for nine months to a year without benefit, not understanding that you sometimes have to take them up to five years before really experiencing success from the treatments. I took shots for several years and now rarely suffer from an allergic reaction. Additional symptomatic treatments for allergies to pets are also available, including antihistamine nose sprays and antihistamine pills. For asthmas, there are multiple medications, sprays and inhalers available. Many new advancements are also becoming available, including a peptide immunotherapy vaccine that specifically targets the FEL-D-1 allergen to provide long term immunity against allergic reactions, and also a pharmaceutical company in the States working on breeding a true hypoallergenic cat, one that produces

little to no FEL-D-1 protein. You can also try boosting your immune system with natural, holistic remedies. Again, you will need to keep in mind that these are not “magic bullets” and you will need to persevere with these treatments. Be sure, first of all, that you are taking a good, whole foods derived multivitamin with minerals, to ensure that your immune system is not compromised by deficiencies in important nutrients such as selenium, zinc, and vitamin A. Follow directions on the label for use. Calcium and magnesium are not only important for maintaining good health in general, but are also highly recommended to help relieve allergy symptoms. Calcium and magnesium need to go hand in hand in proper amounts in order to do their jobs properly. You require approximately half the amount of magnesium as calcium. People with poor diets, or those avoiding dairy products, tend to be deficient in both these minerals. Magnesium can be obtained by consuming meat, fish, nuts, black beans and molasses. can be found of course in dairy products, but also in green leafy vegetables, tofu, salmon and sardines, especially with the bones. Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) helps support adrenal function, which assists your body in coping with stress and allergic reactions. Vitamin E is also a wonderful allergy fighting vitamin. For each additional mg of vitamin E you consume there is an allergy antibody lowering effect of over 5%. Vitamin C is a proven natural antihistamine, and tends to work quite quickly. Bioflavoniods help to increase the effectiveness of vitamin C. Also, at least one of them, quercetin, also lowers release of histamines by as much as 96 percent, according to a recent Japanese study. Fruits and vegetables are rich sources of bioflavonoids, and quercetin is also found in onions, garlic, the spice turmeric, as well in the white pulp under citrus skin. While vitamin C works rather quickly to reduce histamines, bioflavonoids require time to build up in the body. There are many types of bioflavonoid supplements available. For citrus bioflavonoids combinations, the recommended dosage is generally 1,000 to 3,000 mg daily. For quercetin alone, try 200 to 400 mg three times daily. Rutin, hesperidin, and catechin are the names of other bioflavonoids with antiinflammatory properties. Recommended dosage is 1,000 to 3,000 mg daily as needed Bromelain is an enzyme found in great quantities in pineapples! It offers many health benefits, including reduced inflammation and swelling. It also improves the absorption of the bioflavonoid, quercetin! Fresh pineapple or pineapple juice are obviously excellent sources of bromelain, but it is also available in capsule form. L- Histidine is an essential amino acid that can help prevent excessive histamine production. Dosage is 1-2 500-mg capsules three times daily Curcumin is an extract of turmeric and has been found to be as effective as prescription cortisone but without the side effects (heart disease, increased blood pressure). Dosage 500 mg one to three times daily Pycnogenol (pine bark extract) and grape seed extract have both been found to be useful as natural antihistamines, to help control allergy symptoms. 7

Ginseng is another highly regarded immune booster, and has an added advantage for allergy sufferers because it contains a substance that suppresses part of the allergic response known as platelet activating factor (PAF). Typically, an effective dose is two 1,000 mg capsules three times per day, or as a tincture, three drops in an eight-ounce glass of water three times daily. After eight weeks, stop taking ginseng for two or three weeks before resuming these dosages. Ginseng is not recommended for pregnant women or for those with high blood pressure. Licorice root, the herb, rather than the candy, which is usually flavoured with anise, has been found to be effective in the treatment of allergies. It is available as a tea, tincture, tablets and capsules. It is important that you seek out and find an allergist who understands your commitment to living with and keeping your pet. A combination of approaches-medical control of symptoms, good housekeeping methods, and immunotherapy-is most likely to succeed in allowing you to live with and keep your pet. Because using allergies as a reason to get rid of one’s cat is so convincing, sympathy inducing, often backed up by the medical community, and generally viewed as reason itself without need for further justification, or action, it has become a very popular excuse for lazy, “Me society” type people who just don’t want their cat anymore. This excuse has been overused so much that many agencies are either very skeptical and/or overfilled so that they are unable to take in animals who are truly in need. Only 8-10% of the population is truly allergic to cats, and of these, there are many people who could still care for their cat for the remainder of his/her lifetime. This isn’t saying they have to go get another cat once their cat has lived out their life in full, but there is no need for the senseless, mass dumping of cats “due to allergies” that we are seeing today. You have made a lifetime commitment to your cat, a member of your family, So if you cannot or will not persevere in finding solutions for your allergies in order to fulfill this commitment, at least be sure that the cat goes someplace safe where s/he will not be giving up his/her life because of your selfishness. -Marjorie Hervey

oday we are going to talk about allergies, specifically pet allergies. People are mistaken when they believe that there is nothing to be done when they have allergies. Living with pets and allergies does not mean that there has to be a choice of one or the other. A few changes in your lifestyle will make it possible to live more comfortably with your pets. The first suggestion if to vacuum weekly or even daily if you have multiple pets. Couches or chairs anything your pet lies on need to be wiped down with a damp cloth or vacuumed. A good vacuuming of your house with a vacuum that has a hepa filter will help clear airborn pathogens and it doesn’t matter whether you have carpet or hard surface flooring. Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum! Brushing your pet weekly will also help to eliminate fur shedding all over the house. Ask your groomer to suggest a suitable brush or comb for your type of pet and the proper way to use it. Brushing will help to eliminate the dead undercoat from your pet. Keeping the coat in good condition is a health benefit for you and your pet. This will help to reduce the amount of hair your pet swallows thus preventing hair balls and the spreading of dander on hair floating around your house. Brushing also

keeps the skin in good condition by increasing blood circulation. Washing all the bedding that your pets lay on is another good way to keep dander to a minimum. This means the quilt on your bed, your pet’s bed and any other soft furnishing that your pets lies on and any soft toys they play with. Weekly washing will keep all furnishings and your house smelling clean and fresh. Wiping your pet down with a moist damp cloth daily will go a long way in keeping dander to a minimum. Your pet will come to enjoy a warm damp cloth on his body from nose to tail. Don’t forget the pads of the feet also. Some department stores or pet stores carry moist pet wipes for this purpose or a quick cleanup if necessary or in between grooming. Regular grooming from a professional groomer is the best way to keep your pet healthy and happy as well as annual veterinarian visits. Ask your groomer or veterinarian for more suggestions that will help you and your pets coexist in a more healthy way. Remember that grooming is more than just looking good, it is an important part of your pet’s health. By Machelle Lutz Fur Evolution | 780-934-8986

n a recent study by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) and Hill's Pet Nutrition, veterinarians said weight control and proper dental care are the two most important things a pet owner can do to increase the length of a pet's life. Yet pet owners are often surprised when their pets are diagnosed with dental disease or obesity. The study also suggests pet owners could use a little guidance to help their pets live long and healthy lives. Here are five key steps they can take to help prevent a range of pet health issues, from dental disease to diabetes: 1. Choose a pet food that meets your pet's specific age-related and health needs. In the CVMA/Hill's Pet Nutrition survey, pet owners admitted that they are nearly twice as likely to buy a pet food based on what their 8

pet likes to eat versus what will actually meet their health needs. 2. Speak to your veterinarian about the food and feeding method that's right for your pet. Veterinarians say overfeeding is the most common mistake pet owners make in feeding their dogs or cats. 3. Make daily pet exercise and play part of a healthy weight management strategy. Veterinarians say that the majority of dogs and cats they see don't get enough exercise to maintain good health. 4. Make your pet's dental health a priority, including brushing at home and professional care from your veterinarian. A food like Hill's Science Diet Adult Oral Care has fibre technology that helps scrub teeth and reduce tarter plaque build-up. 5. Learn to recognize the visible signs of health issues in pets. Schedule regular vet-

erinary visits to ensure there aren't any health issues you don't recognize. You can learn more about pet health and nutrition at Hillspet.ca or Facebook.com/ ScienceDietCanada. www.newscanada.com

EDMONTON C AT FANCIERS CLUB Allergies to Cats and Cats in the House. . . Can they co-exist?

often hear folks say that they cannot do “this or that” because they have “allergies to cats”. This same statement is frequently used to justify the need to “get rid of” the cat(s). True allergies must be determined by an Allergist and involve rigorous testing. It’s not always necessary to remove a feline – a little work can make a big difference. Many folks with allergies, whatever the severity, still manage to go about their daily lives quietly and efficiently and many of them (Gasp!) own cats. There are a number of individuals who own cats, show them regularly at Cat Shows, and who have varying degrees of allergic reactions to cats. We even have a few Judges with The International Cat Association who are allergic – they persevere, take allergy medication and minimize their exposure to allergens. Anyone who has attended a Cat show and observed the judging process will, no doubt, have noticed the Judges regularly disinfecting the judging table as well as their hands. They are still exposed to extra allergens, in that a cat who is frightened, may shed excess amounts of hair while on the “table”. Wiping the table after each cat minimizes the residue. Sticky rollers for de-fuzzing help keep the Judge’s clothing somewhat free of allergens. There are a number of measures one can utilize to minimize the exposure to cat dander, dried saliva and cat hair. It is a mistaken thought that long haired cats shed the most hair – short hair cats shed just as much - if not more – one is just not as likely to see it!! Step number one in keeping your cat in your home and controlling the allergic reactions is to ensure that you have a healthy cat. Regular veterinary visits are a “must” along with annual vaccinations. Once your cat has been checked by the Vet, it’s now your turn to put a few measures in place at home. Groom your cat daily – if she/he will permit - and work to make it a pleasant activity for both of you. If your cat is not accustomed to being groomed (combed), begin slowly working on a small section of the coat. Find a comfortable place for both of you – a towel on the lap frequently is sufficient. Make 9

sure that nails are clipped before starting the combing!! The objective is to remove the dead hair, which is what will otherwise fall out on its own. If your cat protests, don’t over-do the session, but ensure that YOU are the one who decides when the grooming is over. Allowing the cat to jump down “when she wants to” will reinforce that she doesn’t have to sit through this activity! Permit your cat to leave and praise her tolerance and perhaps offer a small treat (don’t overdo the treats). As your cat becomes more accepting of this routine, lengthen the grooming – a bit at a time – and have the sessions be as positive an experience as possible. If you start this procedure when your cat is young, she will become accustomed to it. Many cats look forward to this special one-on-one time with their human. The best tool to use for either short or long hair cats is a good metal comb – fine teeth for short hairs and wider, longer teeth for longhairs. The goal is to get down to the roots and remove the dead hair. Be cautious and don’t pull on the coat – comb gently. Brushing does not accomplish anything other than to slick down the outermost hair. Even if your cat does not go outdoors (which it shouldn’t), washing or bathing the cat will aid in reducing the allergens in your environment. Special allergenreduction shampoos are available from your Veterinarian and can help with this process. Prior to bathing, the cat’s nails must be clipped and combing must be completed. It often works well to spread out these activities, so as not to stress the cat too much at one time. (An article on bathing a cat was published a couple of years ago in this Mewsletter.) Now that the cat is clean, it’s time to focus on cleaning the environment. Provide washable furniture covers (a pad with catnip) for the cat to sit on – this reduces hair/dander on any upholstered surfaces. Vacuuming and dusting regularly with a micro fibre cloth aids in keeping hair to a minimum. Some recommend using steam cleaners for carpet and upholstery to reduce chemical residue. Reducing the amount of

carpet in the home simplifies clean-up. It is difficult for many devoted cat owners to follow the next couple of suggestions – don’t allow the cat to sleep with you and don’t allow it in the sleeping area at any time. (I fail on both counts!!) In addition to washing furniture covers and area rugs regularly, it is also suggested that bedding be washed in 140 degree hot water at least twice monthly. This has the dual advantage of getting rid of the cat allergen, but also reducing dust mite allergens (which may be the real problem!). Sometimes, it may be necessary to confine your cat to one easily-cleaned area of the house – difficult to do, but might work to enable you to keep the cat! I can’t suggest that you never touch your cat – that would be impossible for most cat lovers – but one should avoid touching face and particularly eyes after petting the cat. Wash one’s hands immediately or use an antiseptic hand wipe. One allergist is quoted to have said that patients to whom he has suggested “getting rid of the cat”, usually get rid of him first (not the cat). That’s how devoted most owners are and how much they want to keep their cats. Trying some of the above suggestions may make things easier for you and enable you to keep your cat, but please remember to seek medical assistance, if needed.

Myth: Black Cats are Bad Luck Black cats have actually been viewed as luck bringers and guardians over many centuries and in many cultures. In Japan, a black cat crossing your path is considered quite lucky.

“A black cat crossing your path signifies that the animal is going somewhere.” -Groucho Marx

In the south of France, black cats are referred to as “matagots” or “magician cats.” Local superstition says they bring good luck to owners who feed them well & treat them with the respect they deserve. In Australia and Britain and other parts of the world where black is a protective color, black cats are though to be lucky. It was believed that their color gave them the power to ward off negative forces. In Scotland it was believed that if a black cat crosses your path it will mean good things to come. A black cat on your porch will bring prosperity and future happiness. In 18th century England, fishermen’s wives kept these cats because they believed this helped to keep their husbands safe at sea. If one ran in front of a sailor as he walked up a pier, it means good luck. To dream of a black cat is lucky!

Prayers My Cats & Dogs Have Taught Me

Myth: Cats get sick from eating grass Eating grass or greens (including catnip) can also cause your cat to regurgitate (or throw up) the undigested contents of his stomach, such as cat hair. This very much seems like nature’s way of preventing hairballs. A bit messy perhaps ... but then again so are stepped in hairballs! 15

Four wonderful books for all of us who’s cats and dogs have given us more than we can ever give them. These books written by Herbert Brokering a pastor, writer, poet, pilgrimage guide and genuine cat and dog lover who in his wisdom has managed to link, as he thinks, the thoughts of cats and dogs, to prayers by the human as they, speak of their cat and dog like nature to God. If you are interested in purchasing these books, they are available locally through: Universal Church Supplies Inc. 11105 -102 Avenue Edmonton AB (780) 429 -3153. The Hervey Foundation does not receive any funding from the sales of these books, but we are happy to recommend a good cat book!
