W
hen we were bidding for the World Junior Championship years ago, we talked about why Alberta wanted the 2012 Juniors and what this would mean to us. We brought the 2012 Juniors to Alberta for numerous reasons: We brought the 2012 Juniors to Alberta so Calgary and Edmonton could work together. We brought the 2012 Juniors to Alberta so over 570,000 people could enjoy a great game. We brought the 2012 Juniors to Alberta so 10 teams, in fact 10 countries from around the world could experience our great province and our country. We brought the 2012 Juniors to Alberta to shine a light on the new home of Hockey Canada at Winsport. We brought the 2012 Juniors to Alberta so people could get together with their families and friends during the holiday season to cheer for Canada or their favorite team or player. Most of all, we brought the 2012 Juniors to Alberta so people could say “I was there”. We created “I was there” because it conjures up important moments that take place in our lives our memories and our experiences. Hockey is about never giving up, getting up when you fall down, helping a teammate, and doing your best. Hockey is about scoring goals, learning how to lose and learning how to win. Whether you watch the occasional hockey game on TV, play in the National Hockey League, play pond hockey, are a boy, girl, man or woman, our national past-time causes you to dream and remember. We all have memories, and through this awesome experience called the World Junior Championship, more memories will be created and we will say “I was there”
Enjoy the tournament! — 2012 Host Organizing Committee

tour
t’s a fairly rare opportunity to have the honour of welcoming the world and hosting an international sporting event. It just doesn’t come around often. The last time Alberta hosted the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship was in 1995, and although the official host city was Red Deer, round-robin games were held in 14 communities across Central Alberta. Fast-forward to the present and the World Junior Championship has finally returned to Alberta, this time all round-robin games taking place in Edmonton and Calgary. Hockey Alberta has partnered with RBC Play Hockey, the World Junior Organizing Committee and Hockey Canada to launch the World Hockey Tour. The idea behind the World Hockey Tour is simple: unite and excite all Albertans regardless of whether or not they could attend a tournament game. The Tour began a few weeks back on December 3rd in Stettler and travelled across the province, to the northern town of Falher and as far south as Lethbridge, visiting a total of 14 different towns and cities. “Our focus was to engage Albertans from all corners of the province to create an exciting atmosphere for the World Junior Championship that extends beyond Edmonton and Calgary,” said Hockey Alberta’s General Manager, Rob Litwinski. “This event will positively impact hockey all around the province and we wanted as many people as possible to have the chance to say ‘I was there’.” As part of its commitment to helping hockey happen in communities across North America, the RBC awarded a total of $70,000 in RBC Play Hockey Grants to communities throughout Alberta, to support the growth and development of the game. “We are proud to be part of the World Hockey Tour leading up to the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship as it brings the spirit of hockey to communities across Alberta," said RBC regional president, Alberta and the Territories, Bruce MacKenzie. Each of the selected communities planned for a full day of on and off-ice events, including 4-on-4 Novice and Atom tournaments for 120 players, coaching clinics, photo opportunities in a replica IIHF locker room, numerous giveaways and prizes for fans. “The Stettler Minor Hockey Association and the community of Stettler was proud to take part in and support the excitement surrounding the World Junior Championship,” said Stettler’s World Hockey Tour Host Chair, Nadine Lang. “Our World Hockey Tour Event was a once in a lifetime opportunity that the kids and community will remember for years to come.” This was exactly the intent of the World Hockey Tour. Spread the thrill, the excitement and ultimately, the legacy that an event like World Junior Championship leaves in its wake, for years to come all across the province. — Jimmy Adams, Communications, Hockey Alberta

i was there
Official theme song
2012 Iihf World Junior Championship written and performed by
Paul Brandt
W
hen Hockey Canada announced that the theme for the 2012 IIHF World Junior Tournament was "I Was There", I agreed that it should be the title for the tournament’s song. In that moment, I immediately went back to a memory from childhood that has always remained with me. I ran downstairs one Christmas morning and saw a street hockey net with a bow on it, and my name on the gift tag. I was euphoric, and took it outside to play hockey with my friends right away. Hockey does that to you. In Canada, hockey is a spirit that transcends age, gender, background and ability. It takes you to places that you've been, and places you'd like to go. It’s about breakaway goals made and shootout goals missed; dreams that come to triumphant fruition and thoughts of “what could have been” that live on in your imagination. Hockey is with you every day. I sat down and wrote the song in about fifteen minutes. As fans started sharing their own "I Was There" moments, their stories provided inspiration and a confirmation that I was on the right track. “I Was There” memories spanned from past World Junior Tournaments, to great historic moments in hockey, to dark winter mornings, cold arenas and even colder car rides. People shared stories about hockey played on the street, in community arenas and frozen ponds. Some stories were about players, some about spectators, and some about the great supporting cast of moms, dads, coaches, friends and family that help fuel hockey dreams. In Canada, and indeed all around the world, hockey fans all speak the same language, all feel the same emotion. We recall the timelines of our lives by referencing great hockey moments. As an artist, songwriter, and probably most importantly, as a hockey fan, writing this song has been a huge honour for me. I am thrilled with the song, and can't wait to hear it in arenas throughout this year’s IIHF World Junior Championship. My hope is that it will evoke the spirit of hockey for everyone who hears it.
— Paul Brandt, November 2011 Scan to hear a clip & download the song! Net proceeds from all downloads of the song “I Was There” will be received by the Hockey Canada Foundation for their nation wide support of hockey for underprivileged kids. Paul Brandt is proud to partner with Hockey Canada in this worthwhile initiative.

tournament format After a single round-robin series in each group, the top three teams from each group advance to the Playoff Round while the fourth and fifth placed team in each group moves to the Relegation Round. The top-seeded team from each group will receive Quarterfinal Round bye thus moving automatically to the Semi-Finals. The second and third placed teams from the Preliminary will play a cross-over Quarterfinal game. The winner of each Quarterfinal moves onto the Semi-Finals, while the loser will play a placement game. The winner of each Semi-Final game will move onto the Gold Medal Game, while the losers will play in the Bronze Medal Game. Relegation format The four teams in the Relegation Round play a single round robin series. The three teams which finish first, second and third at the end of this round play again at the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 World Championship, while the fourth-place team is relegated to the Division I Group A. Teams carry over the points they earned from the Preliminary Round from the game against the other team from the group participating in the Relegation Round. Three Point System For all games points shall be awarded as follows: 3 points for the winning team at the conclusion of regulation time; 1 point for both teams at the conclusion of regulation time if the game is tied; An additional point earned for the team winning the game in a 5-minute overtime period, or the Game Winning Shots Procedure if the teams are still tied following conclusion of the overtime period; 0 points for the team losing the game in regulation time Overtime Operations If a game is tied at the end of regulation time, a five-minute overtime period shall be played immediately after an intermission of three minutes. The teams will defend the same goals as in the third period. The game will end when the five minutes has expired or when a goal is scored; the scoring team will be declared the winner. If no goal is scored in the overtime period then the Game Winning Shots Procedure will apply. All overtime periods of any IIHF game shall be played with each team at the numerical strength of four (4) skaters and one (1) goalkeeper. Overtime procedure in Play-Off Games In case of a tie at the conclusion of regulation time in a Quarter Final, Semi Final and Bronze Medal Game, there will be a 10minute sudden-death overtime period played, following a three-minute intermission. The teams will defend the same goals as in the third period. The team, which scores a goal during this period is the winner. In the Gold Medal game there will be a 20-minute sudden-death overtime period, following a 15-minute intermission during which the ice will be resurfaced. The teams will change ends. The team which scores a goal during this period is declared winner. If no goal is scored during the sudden-death overtime, there will be Game Winning Shot (GWS) competition ("shootout") according to the Game Winning Shots Procedure. Game Winning Shots Procedure If no goal is scored in the overtime period then the Game Winning Shots (GWS) procedure will apply. The following procedure will be utilized: Three different shooters from each team will take alternate shots, until a decisive goal is scored. If the game is still tied after three shots by each team, the GWS will continue with a tie-break shoot out

by one player of each team, with a reversed shooting order. The same or new players can take the tie-break shots. The same player can also be used for each shot by a team in the tie-break shoot-out. Only the decisive goal will count in the result of the game. Shots will be taken at both ends of the ice. The area of the ice to be used will be dry scraped. A coin toss will determine which team takes the first shot, with the winner of the toss having the choice whether his team will shoot first or second. Any player whose penalty was not over when overtime ended cannot take the shots and must stay in the penalty box or in the dressing room. Once named, players may only be replaced in the event of injury or penalty. The substitute stand-by player is placed last in the shooting order. The goalkeepers will defend the same goal, as determined by the Referee. The goalkeepers from each team may be changed after each shot. The players of both teams will take the shots alternately until a decisive goal is scored. The decisive goal will be credited to the player who scored and to the goalkeeper concerned. Tie breaking formula The tie-breaking system for two teams with the same number of points in a standing will be the game between the two teams, the winner of the game taking precedence. Due to the fact that the threepoint system does not allow a game to end in a tie, then the following tie breaking procedure is applicable when three or more teams are tied in points in a Championship standing. Should three or more teams be tied on points, then a tie breaking formula will be applied as follows, creating a sub-group amongst the tied teams. This process will continue until only two teams remain tied. The game between the two remaining tied teams would then be the determining tie-breaker as the game between these two teams could not end as a tie. Step 1: Taking into consideration the games between each of the tied teams, a sub-group is created applying the points awarded in the direct games amongst the tied teams from which the teams are then ranked accordingly. Step 2: Should the teams still remain tied then the better goal difference in the direct games amongst the tied teams will be decisive. Step 3: Should the teams still remain tied then the highest number of goals scored by these teams in their direct games will be decisive Step 4: Should three or more teams still remain tied then the results between each of the three teams and the closest best-ranked team outside the sub-group will be applied. In this case the tied team with the best result (1. points, 2. goal difference, 3. more goals scored) against the closest best rankedteam will take precedence Step 5: Should the teams still remain tied, then the results between each of the three teams and the next highest best-ranked team outside the sub-group will be applied. Step 6: Should the teams still remain tied after these five steps have been exercised then Sport considerations will be applied and the tied teams will be ranked by their positions coming into the Championship. Note: If not all mutual games have been played yet in an ongoing tournament, the tied teams will be ranked in the standings according to the following criteria: 1. Lower number of games played, 2. Goal difference, 3. Goals scored, 4. Positions coming into the Championship.
If there is a discrepancy at any point – the IIHF will have the final say on all rulings.

project legacy painting
T
he 2012 WJC Legacy Painting Project will be composed of sixteen or more mural-sized paintings depicting the highlights and events of the 2012 World Junior Championship as it unfolds. The “real-time” creation and development of these paintings is an engaging process which attracts a consistently growing audience. These huge, professionally executed paintings will portray the athletes, fans, officials and coaches of the WJC in the host cities of both Edmonton and Calgary, providing viewers with an empowered visual experience. This WJC Legacy Collection of paintings will serve as a visual diary; documenting highlights of the tournament. The images selected for painting will be chosen for their ability to address the intangible elements that transcend the game of hockey; the strength and power of the athletes, the love of the game, and the international aspect of the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship. The exhibition provides a lasting reminder of the event, promoting the love of the game for Canadians and acknowledges the significant role hockey plays in our collective Canadian Culture. This project also acts as a tool for heightened interest in the 2012 Juniors and the FanFest portion in ‘real time’, engaging an added audience from the arts and culture scene. The artists can be viewed in action in the Fan Zone, in Edmonton at the Expo Centre and in Calgary at the Big Four Building, during the tournament. This year's legacy paintings brought to you by artsASTRAY, Rachel Nickerson & Michael Smith
