TRADITION MEETS MODERN STYLE AT BARBER HA
The barbershop has been the heart of many communities for hundreds and maybe even thousands of year. Razors have been found in Egypt that date back to 3500 BC, and in recent history the classic barbershop is known as part of the male identity. Boys and men have settled into the barber’s chair to receive cuts and shaves and share many an opinion, as well as news and general conversation. Old Strathcona is home to a barbershop that effortlessly combines traditional services and techniques with the most contemporary styles, all set in a nostalgic environment. Barber Ha is a charming barbershop that offers straight shaves and clean cuts. Their straight shaves come with hot/cold towel treatments and aftershave/lotion, and their services also include a beard trim, neck shave and washes. Impeccable craftsmanship works with quality products to ensure every gentleman receives the best service. The Barber Ha experience doesn’t stop in the chair, however. The shop also hosts shopping parties, shows and live music events. The Barber Ha Legion is a membership of the most stylish gentleman around, and includes a punch pass that rewards clients with increasing discounts, a membership card and an official patch.

The Old Strathcona Foundation is a group dedicated to restoring and preserving the past and recognizing the importance of the heritage of the area. Their mandate is as follows: “Our goal is to preserve, protect, and promote the historical story of Old Strathcona including the celebration of the heritage of the area and the stewardship of its historical assets for a vibrant community. Some of the Foundation’s improvements you have likely admired include: brick sidewalks; oak benches; turn-of-the-century light poles; trees and banners; restoration of 15 buildings along Whyte Avenue including the Princess Theatre; and the Whyte Avenue Mural Projects. Over the years, the stories of success, tales of adventure and the evolution of the area have become legendary. And the story is far from over.

The first train arrived in South Edmonton in 1891. This link to the outside world brought settlers and pioneers looking for a new life and opened the area up to a whole new set of influences. The first buildings were erected by C & E Railway Company and included the railway station, section house, engine house and a hotel, called Edmonton House (now the Strathcona Hotel). All buildings were built along what is now 103rd Street. The village of South Edmonton was renamed Strathcona in 1899. That same year it was first incorporated as a town, and then was incorporated as a city in 1907. The amalgamation of Strathcona and Edmonton came into effect in 1912. Today, the Old Strathcona Business Association and the Old Strathcona Foundation nurture the history of Old Strathcona. The Old Strathcona Provincial Historic Area was established under a provincial Order-inCouncil on January 31, 2007. This designation signalled the recognition by Alberta of the district for its contributions to provincial history.

Fashion is also in the air, as March brings with it Western Canada Fashion Week. This is the second largest fashion week in Canada, bringing together established and up-and-coming designers and artists who combine fashion and beauty. WCFW encourages and supports a community of inspiring artisans as they make their way in the fashion world. No spring season would be complete without a true Canadian tradition: the Stanley Cup. Hockey fans gather at pubs, lounges and sports bars (and often stores, dining rooms and cafés) to watch each best-of-seven series and cheer on their favourite teams. Spring is certainly the start of our local outdoor growing season. Many restaurants buy local and offer a relevant selection of fresh dishes. At the farmers’ market, you’ll find the produce bins overflowing with lettuce, kale, cucumber, eggplant, rhubarb, basil and more. May is planting season, and the market is a great place to pick up your bedding plants and potted herbs.
