Space of Burial at Sea

Subject: Special Topics on Architectural Design / 2017.03

Studio Individual Project

This project aims to discuss the prospects of burial at sea. The Taiwan authorities formulated regulations for burial at sea and asked people to bury their deceased offshore, about 6000 kilometers from the coastline. I redefine this line that separates the living and the dead as the 'memory line'. The project helps people to rethink the modes of memory by transferring the ceremonies of burial at sea to the architectural design. The precision of longitude and latitude for burying as well as the perceived change of spaces will help the family and friends to sense the reality of burial at sea. Their love and memory for the deceased will become the power to protect the sea.

Analysis of Space Schematic diagram of the port for burial at sea

Feeling the influence of water boundaries can make people slow down and absorb the things surrounding them.

A space for meditation when people need to soothe their hearts.

The guide from the light will bring peace to the living and calm their souls.

A dusky space will strengthen the sense of hearing. The sound of water will purify the souls of families.

Pray in a space with the natural sound of waterflow; feel more close to the true purpose of burial at sea.

Uses space to create visual compression, which symbolizes the spirit and soul after feeling relief from sorrow.

Use large tread stairs and roundabout ramps to slow the speed of people.

Feel the tidal variation; feel like the deceased is still next to you.

Separate spaces can help people enjoy peace and convey their feelings to the deceased.

Observation deck to see the sea view will help people feel relief from the visual compression and expand the mind.

/ Step I. Mourning

Through the emotional transfer after grinding the ashes, I developed a space that allows people to sprinkle the petals into a pond. The high ceiling design and light emanating from the area above will make family members feel relief and hope while in the dark.

/ Step II. Memorizing

After sealing the ashes, the living will carry the ashes and walk through a road with water walls; they will be led by the sound of water to the next stage.

/ Step III. Remembering

In the ceremony of burial near the end, the living can note down the date and the latitude and longitude, which symbolize the direction for memorization; there is a memorial space under the sea level in this building that allows people to stay and remember the deceased.

/ Step IV. Missing

Family members can return to the space for meditation and heal the scars of the soul during each Qingming Festival.

WHO'S PULLING YOUR STRINGS

Space of Perceptually-Domesticated

Subject: Architecture Thesis Design / 2017.08 - 2018.06

Bachelor Studio Individual Project

In an urban environment that lacks critical thought, people become rationalized by the rules of the space without understanding their underlying features. I define the phenomenon as “users domesticated by space”. The phenomenon appears because people have adapted to the place they live in; they are manipulated by routine. In an urban environment that lacks critical thought, people become rationalized by the rules of the space without understanding their underlying features. I define the phenomenon as “users domesticated by space”. The phenomenon appears because people have adapted to the place they live in; they are manipulated by routine.

The project uses an objective point of view, a drama script, and a Metro Station area as a "domesticated space" to discuss the manipulation. We set the routes for both rushing passengers (domesticated) and notrushing passengers. I developed the space from the position of a third party (domesticator). Under the status of domesticated, this space is not a container for activity but rather affects the choice of people who are inside it; people can select each path and find their own scripts.

I selected Taipei’s Yuanshan Metro Station area in 2060 as the space for my project. This area of Taipei is close to an airport that is due to close and become part of the City Central Garden. I selected this area because the axis of the channel of airplanes changes the skyline in this area, which is also a symbol of a domesticated city.

Under the basis of urban design, I try to transfer the invisible channels to the axis on the ground and make the intermediary point for the space. I also reserve the lower building volume on both sides of the spaces to help people remember the traces of history, because this trace is the most important domesticated trace of this city, and its people and will become the axis after this city changes its appearance.

There are three entries on the ground floor—two of them are more covert so that the rushed passengers may use them as a shortcut to the platform.

The last one is for people who are in no rush. They can walk on these paths and find themselves manipulated by the surrounding space. They can also see the people who are rushing yet find themselves on the wrong paths. There are additional visible spaces that cannot be entered. The purpose of this piece is to remind ourselves to think carefully before deciding which path we want to walk through to enter the next space; do not be domesticated by the environment.

OKURA PRESTIGE TAICHUNG Work Experience

Company: Highwealth Construction / 2019.04

Highwealth Construction Okura Hotel

The project is a twenty-nine-floor composite building that combines office space and a hotel. The location of the building is in the central area of Taichung's 7th Redevelopment Zone. As the most representative zone of Taichung, the geographic environment is suitable for business trips, sightseeing, and shopping.

Molu Lane is one of the narrowest streets in Taiwan. So narrow, two people cannot pass without touching one another. It was and still is customary for the gentleman to allow the woman to pass first, adopting the name Gentleman Alley. Concept Diagram

PALAIS DE CONGREGATE HOUSE Work Experience

Company: Chang Yih Construction / 2022.04

The design concept of this congregate housing project is mutualism with nature. For the exterior, I used wood grain grilles and strong stone walls on both sides. The night lighting utilized the natural lights from the stars as decoration, revealing a different view of the night sky. For the interior design, I select Orientalism as the central concept, and used different metal colors to define the stone grains.
