TRADE

Figure 1 shows the three main insdustries in galashiels, they are barleys, textile and pharmaceutical industry. All these industries will be described by showing the three main companies that located in Galashiels and Scottish Boarder.

General History 75

Introduction As a major commercial centre for the Borders region, Galashiels is famous for its textile making. History has shown that textile industry used to bring great fortune and an economic bloom for the town which remains one of the main industries nowadays. The other two types of industry catch our eyes are pharmaceutical and barleys industry since they have become national or international business.

Textile Industry Galashiels’s most famous industry. It might not have as many factories and stores in the town as in the nineteenth century, some textile companies like Lochcarron of Scotland even don’t have their head office in Galashiels but the nearby town of Selkirk. However, it still remains a very important type of trade for Galashiels, especially when Heriot-Watt University’s School of Textiles and Design decided to site here, the industry will have more potentials for future development.

Pharmaceutical Industry Unlike the textiles , the pharmaceutical industry is a recent development for the town. The example company we choose, ProStrakan join with a Japanese partnership now is an international company, headquartered in Galashiels with commercial operations throughout the rest of the UK and continental Europe and a US head office.

Barley Industry Research has told us that agriculture is also a large industry in the Borders, it accounts for 10% of trade in the region compared to 2-3% in the UK as a whole. Simpson Malt is a very successful example company in barley industry, headquartered in Berwick-upon-Tweed, with trading divisions in the North of England and Scotland, also in Australia Canada and US.

GLOBAL MAPPING: PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY

Figure 3: Global Mapping:Phramacy by Author. ProStrakan is headquartered in Galashiels, Scotland with commercial operations throughout the rest of the UK and continental Europe and a US head office (New Jersey). It has a network of partners who distribute our products in other territories around the world. Galashiels is an excellent location from which to build an international pharmaceuticals company. Communications links are strong, with direct links to both Europe and the US out of Edinburgh Airport, and main arterial roads linking the town both North and South.

Figure 6 : Current Car Park by Author. Currently Galashiels has very little car parking positions, especially in town centre area, all the parking lots are distributed separately and have very limited area for car parking. It is a very unreasonable thing for Glashiels as a trade centre town in Borders region, not to mention the disadvantages this will bring to future commercial development. There is an existing large parking lot positioned in the university area, which makes it become an area with high redeveloping potentials.

In order to achieve the Digital Economy vision, we should aim to address 4 challenge areas:

Sustainable Society In sustainable societies of the future, people will be able to make informed choices. Improved delivery of information and services will foster changes in behaviour to minimise the negative impact of our activities.

Communities and Culture Communities, participation and culture are changing in the digital age. It is important that we ensure digital interaction enhances, not replaces face to face interactions.

New Economic Models In an increasingly global economy, as new companies and individuals use digital technologies to innovate, the market can change rapidly. New business models are being created to adapt and take advantage IT as a Utility Digital infrastructure should be so simple, accessible and reliable that it seems invisible. In delivering this, questions need to be answered about whether people will trust it, how to ensure privacy is respected and how to pay for it.

DIGITAL MARKETING DIGITAL ECONOMY

DIGITAL ECONOMY Figure 8: Digital Marketing by Author. Due to new technology, people can access information anywhere and anytime. Digital Marketing is the new method which has been adopted in recent marketing strategies. Some of exemplars have been shown in the diagram. Figure 9 : Digital Economy by Author. Digital Economy improves the relationship between business and business (B&B), and business and customer (B&C). For example, middle man or agency between producer and customer is not necessary anymore, if comparing with the traditional methods. As a result customers can purchase cheaper products and seller can earn more.

Figure 10 :Digital Trade Network by Author. This diagram shows the relationship between users and benefits of digital economy. As we can see that cloud data is the new era of information storage, and it plays vital role in many activities. Digital Economy offers convenience to everyone in the economy circle. Home makers and or students (buyer) could benefit from online market, click and collect system. Simultaneously, business industry or partners could extend the new target group from small scale (local) into large scale (global).

Figure 11 :Social Sustainability:Human Flows by Author. Sustainable economy always has positive influence on social and environmental sustainability. For Galashiels, its social development might be strengthen by creating a more sustainable trade mode. Four types of human flows which are divided according to the drive distance to Galashiels might be able to show the future potentials of social development since the means of transportation will be enriched this year., and the trade mode will have more opportunities to expand its scale and diversities. This might be how civic value can be embodied in “Trade theme

Heat Loss The external walls are important in terms of overall building heat loss ,but the contribution to the total heat loss vvaries with building from and type.

Timber Structure Timber frame wall panels can be manufactured from a variety of stud types and sizes. However ,the stud spacing is consistent in most cases at either 400mm or 600mm; these centres are preferred to provide supports for stuctural wind bracing sheet materials and for internal linings that are 1200 mm wide.

Thermal Insulation For timber frame external walls ,relatively flexible quilts or batts of mineral wool insulation have traditionally been preferred to rigid insulation products. Mineral wool is frequently still used in timber frame external walls and is an efficient lowcost form of insulation. When space is limited the use of deep studs is a potential issue in terms of building footprint, so with increasing pressure to reduce heat loss and CO2 emissions, rigid insulation products with a lower thermal conductivity than mineral wool are increasingly used in timber frame external walls.
