Psychic News: the voice of Spiritualism Two of Spiritualism’s leading exponents helped create and launch Psychic News in 1932. Hannen Swaffer, one of the UK’s most famous journalists, and Maurice Barbanell, a businessman who was also a trance medium, recognised the need for a publication that would satisfy the public’s desire for up-todate and independent information about Spiritualism and mediumship. They regularly addressed audiences of thousands in theatres around the country as families came

Psychic News makes a unique contribution to that debate every month with news, features and opinion pieces that explore the evidence for an afterlife and spirit communication. above all, Spiritualism and Psychic News readers can enrich their lives spiritually and make the right choices. why not let us be your travelling companion, offering words of wisdom and support, as you continue on your soul’s journey through this lifetime?

One of the famous Cottingley fairy photographs
(Or did he mean “see to believe”?) The arguments at the Mad Hatter’s Tea-Party in Alice in Wonderland spring to mind, when the March Hare said, “You might just as well say that ‘I like what I get’ is the same thing as ‘I get what I like.’” In 2009, Phyllis Bacon, 55, photographed what she believed to be a fairy in her garden in New Addington, near Croydon, Surrey. The fake fairies of Cottingley, Yorkshire, appeared in 1917, created and photographed by two young girls, Elsie Wright and
and the girls were interviewed about the fairies who lived at the bottom of the garden. They convinced some highly intelligent people, including Spiritualist Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Invited to contribute an article to a Christmas edition of The Strand Magazine, he used the Cottingley Fairies as evidence for spiritual good in the modern world.
He ended his article: “The recognition of their existence will jolt the material 20th century world out of its heavy ruts in the mud, and will make it admit that there is a glamour and mystery to life. accept that spiritual message supported by physical facts, which has already been put before it.”
confessed to the Cottingley hoax. “I’m fed up with all these stories,” she said. “I cringe every time I see those photographs. I don’t want to die and leave my grandchildren with a loony grandmother to remember.” “The joke was only meant for two hours”, said Elsie Wright towards the end of her life. “It lasted 70 years.” John Hyatt is not joking (as far as we know!). His exhibition will be ® staged at the Whittaker Museum, Rossendale, throughout the spring.
YET again the famous Cottingley fairy photographs are the centre of controversy.
At the time, the photographs created a sensation. And the row continues.
“They examined the plates carefully,” he wrote. “Neither could
According to the Daily Mail a few days ago, Elsie Wright has admitted “a number of the photographs were faked”.
A few years ago Brian Coe of the Kodak museum re-examined the photographs.
However, I see from our cuttings that when the women were interviewed in a TV programme in 1973 they were adamant in declaring no cheating was involved. Among those who championed the photos was pioneer Spiritualist Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. His out-of-print book, The Coming of the Fairies, reproduced the entire series of photographs. In his book Sir Arthur tells how he took the original negatives
“I can’t say exactly how they were done,” Mr Coe said on TV. “I don’t see how the girls would be capable of doing them.” What I found interesting about the Daily Mail quote was that Elsie Wright said a number of the photographs were faked. Does this suggest to you, as it does to me, that even if some were fraudulently obtained, not all of them were? PN, April 1983 PSYCHIC NEWS | MAY 2014

He pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention and failing to provide a breath test. The Crown Prosecution Service said he failed a test at the scene of the accident, but refused to give a further breath test at the police station. The accident happened when Acorah was seen taking a roundabout at high speed on Scarisbrick New Road, Southport. His Nissan GT sports car then veered off the carriageway and into a Ford Ka. The 52-year-old female driver suffered whiplash injury, cuts and bruises.
Her car was written off, and she has been left with anxiety about driving. Senior District Crown Prosecutor Philippa Kennedy, head of the CPS magistrates’ unit on Merseyside, said: “Derek Johnson’s driving that day could have caused serious injuries. “Thankfully, the driver of the other car escaped without serious harm, but did suffer several injuries and now has a fear of driving. “Failing to give a breath sample is also a serious offence. The Resurrection Man SAM PARNIA, MD is a very special doctor. Not only is he a leading researcher into near-death and out-of-body experiences, he can bring patients back to life after they have been dead for several hours. They can then go on living, sometimes for decades. Although he now works in America, Parnia is British. He trained in London at Guy’s and St Thomas’s Hospitals, and took a PhD in cell biology at the University of Southampton. He left for the States in 2005, and is now Head of Intensive Care at Stony Brook University Hospital, New York. Parnia has specialised knowledge of a resuscitation technique which can restore life to patients who have died. He believes the comparatively cheap and straightforward methods he uses year and maybe 10,000 British. He is so frustrated at the medical establishment’s slowness and reluctance book in the hope of spreading the word. His book, The Lazarus Effect, is an attempt to persuade us to reconsider our understanding of death. His resuscitation work has led him to wider questions of what constitutes being and not being. He told Observer journalist Tim Adams: “I believe that anyone who dies of a cause that is reversible should not really die. Not every heart attack victim should die. I have to be careful when I say that because people will say, ‘My husband died recently and you are saying that need not have happened.’ “But the fact is that heart attacks themselves are quite easily managed. If you manage the process of death properly, the heart will function in most cases. It’s
the same with infections – pneumonia or whatever. People who don’t respond to antibiotics in time could be kept for a while longer (after death) until they did respond. “It’s certain that we will all eventually experience cardiac arrest, and our hearts will stop beating. INTERVIEW
USING SCIENCE TO INSPIRE Scientist, best-selling spiritual author and inspirational speaker Dr David Hamilton tells editor Sue Farrow about what prompted his unique fusion of science and spirituality, why his mum is his role-model for kindness, and the ‘stolen’ library book that changed his life.
David Hamilton is a one-off. chemistry and a PhD in organic chemistry. He worked for several years in the pharmaceutical industry, developing drugs for cardiovascular disease and cancer. But here’s the one-off bit: he’s also a bestselling author for the world’s most respected spiritual and metaphysical publisher, Hay House, and an inspirational speaker in huge demand for talks and workshops that, in his own words, “use science to inspire”. So how did this unique fusion of science and spirituality, subjects so often seen as polar opposites and mutually exclusive, come about? “I worked for a big company called AstraZeneca, and basically my career was sticking atoms together to make molecules,” David explains. “But what interested me more than making the medicines was what happened when we tested them. “You get a hundred patients with a drug and a hundred with a fake drug – a placebo. What amazed me is when you might get 75 per cent of people improving on the drug, improving on a placebo. And that for me was compelling.
PhD, but I kind of shelved it when I put my brain into academic mode for a few years. But once I started seeing those placebo results, it reignited things I was really passionate about, so in my spare time I was researching mind over science.”
amazed “meWhat is when you
might get 75 per cent of people improving on the drug, it’s not uncommon to get 50 to 74 per cent improving on a placebo. And that for me was compelling.
”
So we could say that the placebo experience drew the two major aspects of David’s life together very neatly? “It pretty much did. I think it was my catalyst. It’s ok reading stuff, but when you’re working with drugs and spending a quarter of a billion dollars and seven years of research to dilate a blood vessel, for example, getting a drug and it’s made of sugar, gets the same result? So, quarter of a billion dollars or nothing other than a thought? Hmm. . . I wonder which you’d go for?” Sounds like a no-brainer when you put it that way. After four years David decided to leave the world of pharmaceuticals because he wanted “to write and speak about the mind and help people to believe in themselves more.”
“I was fascinated by this placebo effect, how people improve through believing they are receiving a drug. Working in drug development exposed me to that effect so I began to study mind-body interactions in my spare time. “I was interested in the mind, metaphysics and all that kind of stuff before I even did my PSYCHIC NEWS | MAY 2014

Oxytocin makes “ you feel connected

”
He also wanted to write and speak about kindness and spread the idea that a small group of people with compassion and kindness in their hearts can change the world. David’s book, Why Kindness is Good for You, published in 2010, has proved hugely successful. It made me wonder if the seeds of his passion for human kindness were planted long before his light-bulb moment over the placebo effect. “My mum was my hero when I was growing up, and she still is. She was a model of kindness. She didn’t say things like ‘this is how you should behave’, but children learn just from being in the presence of people, copying their behaviour, learning right from wrong. My mum is naturally highly compassionate and kind. She’d gladly give you the shirt off her back if she knew you needed it, and I just grew up in that environment. “I went to a Catholic school, but my mum and dad didn’t really encourage us to go to mass – it was very much my own choice,” he says. “But I developed an interest in spirituality, I suppose, because I was interested in the mind, something my mum, who was suffering with post-natal depression after the birth of my younger sister, kindled in me unintentionally. “As daft as this might sound, I was about eleven years old and I was on a tour of the public library with my English teacher. Suddenly a book fell off the shelf. It was called The Magic Power of your Mind, and I took it. Well, I didn’t know you were supposed to hand in a library card!”

It’s 32 years overdue!” And does he see that falling book as one of those ‘meant-to-be’ kind of events? “I do,” he says. “I absolutely believe it was meant to happen, because when I gave the book to my mum, she devoured it, even though she wasn’t really a person to be reading books. It didn’t cure her in a day, but it gave her a sense that our ways of thinking can change things. “I would often hear her excitedly and passionately saying: ‘It’s all in the mind. It’s mind over matter. I can do it, and you can do it’. It was a drip-feed into my consciousness that the mind is more than just something you think with. It can really shape your health and your life.” While emphasising that I don’t have a scraped a pass in biology O-Level) I hazard a guess that all sorts of chemical things happen in the body, depending on what we’re doing at the time. Tentatively I ask if the feel-good factor that sometimes washes over us when we’ve helped someone, might be down to some kind of chemical ‘afterglow’. “Absolutely,” David concedes. “There’s an elevation of dopamine in the brain, in the little pleasure centres that make you feel good. There’s also a production of the
brain’s natural versions of morphine and heroin.” This leads us neatly to my next question – the role of the hormone oxytocin (otherwise known as the ‘bonding hormone’ or the ‘love hormone’), about which David has written extensively. “Oxytocin makes you feel connected with a person – warm and bonded,” he explains. “You feel affection towards them. It also reduces blood pressure and cleans out your arteries of dangerous chemicals.” that should be bottled! Can its production be switched on automatically without a triggering mood change? How does it work? “We produce oxytocin when we make a warm contact with someone,” he says. “If we hold someone’s hand affectionately, or show compassion. But you could produce it when you feel inspired. A woman who has a young baby only has to think of her baby and she’ll start to produce breast milk. The breast milk needs oxytocin for production, and the thought of the baby is enough. “The human body is genetically wired to connect, to experience positive emotion when we connect with each other. It’s part of the legacy of evolution that’s caused the human species to thrive through millions of years. “We are a social species, so when we connect with each other the human psyche naturally increases in positivity. We don’t even have to try, it’s natural.” It’s clear there’s a whole hidden world

“Just be yourself and the right people will love the real you. Once in a physical body where the consciousness was loving itself completely, Anita knew that the cancer could not survive. It didn’t mean it was the same for every person with cancer, but in her particular case, what she knew 100 per cent was that in the chemistry of the body produced by a consciousness that loves itself entirely, cancer cannot survive, and that’s exactly what happened to her.”
and it would be about 2km away! That’s the reality inside the atoms in your body. In
Interestingly he adds that the birth of social media has provided an unexpected bonus for social scientists to study human connection in new and exciting ways they never have before.
Speaking of healing, I tell David that my assistant editor Paul Brett attended one of his seminars and has several times told me he was staggered by the power of the

of inter-connectedness between our spiritual and biological selves – a massive opportunity for ongoing research. what science is really doing is providing credibility and support for a lot of the things that people with an interest in spirituality and the healing arts have been saying for hundreds and thousands of years. what evolution projected, that we are at our healthiest and happiest when we’re connected, when we’re interacting warmly with people.” Perhaps incongruously, the subject of near-death experiences comes to my mind. We read powerful testimony from people who have had an NDE and returned to life suffused with a longing to do good to their fellow man and woman. I ask if any research has been conducted into body chemistry prior to and after a NDE. “No general investigation,” says David. “But you’ve probably heard of Anita Moorjani’s case. She wrote the book Dying to be me. I met her about eighteen months ago when we spoke at the same conference, and I was profoundly moved by her story. She recovered from her type of cancer at that stage before. “After her NDE it dissolved completely within one month. I think the analogy given was ‘like snowballs melting on a hot stove’. So, that kind of case is a demonstration of chemistry before and afterwards. It’s been corroborated by oncologists who were “Anita told me that the most profound thing impressed upon her as she was returning to her body, the single most important thing human beings have to learn, is how to love themselves. She knew by what was impressed upon her that the choice was to love herself without reservation, in other words be completely authentic, completely herself.
“Basically, I created it because I was looking for a way of taking people out of the normal way of thinking about illness. When we’re thinking of an illness, we think of it physiologically, at the level of cells, maybe.

Then we come back out of the body by the same route we took in; back out through the particles, the atoms, the DNA, the cells, back to the body.” And what of the future for David? He’s now working hard on a new book about the science of self-love, for which he says Anita Moorjani was the inspiration. it comes out next January. It’s going well at the moment. It feels like my strongest book so far, so I’m very excited about it.”

Craig Hamilton-Parker, Spiritualist medium, TV host and author of seven books on dreams, is an expert on the rich world of dreaming. Each month he’s here to interpret your dreams. I thought they must surely be dead. However, as I drew closer to them, I could detect faint breathing. I knew they were very close to death, but that if I could get them inside my house, I might be able to save them. It was with a great sense of urgency that I approached my front door and started to turn the key in the lock in order to open it. To my dismay, before I could get the door open, the key broke in half as I turned it in the lock. The emotional impact of this actually woke me from the dream.
Janis
CRAIG’S INTERPRETATION: This dream is about a series of troubles you have had to confront in waking life. Cats are associated with femininity and independence. In a woman’s dream they can be a symbol of how you view yourself. Kittens suggest vulnerability and the symbolism may point to your own youth and childhood. The dream suggests that at some time in your life you were faced with a number of soul-crushing problems stacked one on assorted colours in the dream. At the time, you felt that you were emotionally dying. Think about what are the three most similar, upsetting issues you have encountered in the past: for example three dead kittens could represent three deaths, three illnesses or three serious life problems. The locked door represents the fact that you have repressed these emotions – you feel that these past problems have given you a feeling of being locked out from inner peace and happiness. The dream is trying to resolve these powerful emotions. You think that the key to resolution is to address the issues urgently but you continue to feel helpless and emotionally locked out. My suggestion is that these personal issues are best approached with gentleness. You cannot force this door or – just like the key – you will snap. You have to gently and gradually resolve the emotional upsets and take some of the pressure off yourself.

VIRGINIA WOOLF CRAIG’S INTERPRETATION: This dream
THE WHITE DREAM DREAM: Several nights ago I dreamt that a friend of mine was the adjudicator in a competition for a music prize. A string of young musicians were arriving, each wheeling tall white plastic folding screens behind which each one was to perform. There seemed to be a lot of white around – the corridor where the competitors were and they had to enter the competition hall through white double doors, opening off the white corridor. I couldn’t see my friend, because she was already in the competition hall, and the competition was in progress. I had the impression that it was an “open” competition for any class of instrument. One competitor was carrying a violin as well as pushing his folding screens. The atmosphere was light-hearted, and busy. There was a lot of movement from all these young adults and their wheelie-screens.

times, when we painted the dead with ochre or red chalk to symbolise blood and resurrection, colours have been powerful symbols in all cultures. In western civilisations white represents reverence, purity, birth, simplicity, cleanliness, peace, humility, precision, marriage and innocence. In your dream it symbolises purity, clarity and the truth. The dream shows that there is a competition. This represents a situation in your real life in which you have to make a judgement or decision. This decision has to be unbiased and not coloured by your opinions or friendships. Each competitor is judged against the same white backdrop. In the dream they are judged by their musical skill – this symbolises the fact that you may need to listen, perhaps to listen to your heart. In real life you have a decision to make. Perhaps this is about people’s character or an issue. The dream tells you to make this decision without pre-judgement. It is ® open to all and only the person with true skill should win.

MEDIUMSHIP
Behind the scenes with...
Paul Jacobs
The popular medium and teacher talks to editor Sue Farrow. How old were you when you had
Although I didn’t understand them at the time, I have had spiritual experiences since I was a young boy, but I was told by my parents that it was my imagination, or that I was just dreaming.
I watched Jesus come “ alive on the cross, and he
came off the cross and stood behind me, and, in a way, he became part of me and began to speak.
”
At the age of 13 I had an objective mystical experience in a Catholic church: I was kneeling at the pew listening to the priest, who was giving a prayer, and I could see myself standing at the altar. As I was aware of this, I watched Jesus come alive on the cross, and he came off the cross and stood behind me, and in a way, he became part of me and began to speak. that it was God’s way of telling me I was going to become a priest, or that I had a weird and wonderful imagination. However, the experience has never left me, and, since becoming a medium and obtaining a better understanding of communicating with the spirit world, I now realise it was the spirit world’s way of telling me that one day I would speak with the voice of the spirit. I would just like to make it clear that I do not think Jesus was communicating with me, or that Jesus is able to speak through me. Instead, the spirit world used the imagery of Jesus and what he stood for, as that was what I could relate to due to my Catholic upbringing.
I had another experience in my early twenties when I moved into the upstairs began to have objective experiences. I saw lights and comets shooting across the room, and would hear my name called. On the one hand these experiences scared the living daylights out of me to such a degree that I would sometimes book myself into a hotel during the middle of the night because I thought the place, rather than me, was causing the phenomena to occur. On the other hand I wanted to understand the causing, and it was that spirit of enquiry that led me to Spiritualism. It was the beginning of my personal journey in understanding the philosophy of Spiritualism, and the uncovering of my latent mediumistic abilities.
My main mentor and teacher was Gordon Higginson, to whom I was introduced by my great aunt. She was a working medium and a personal friend of Gordon’s, or involved with Spiritualism until I had found Spiritualism myself. Initially, Gordon placed me in the hands of Martyn Young, who at the age of 19 was already teaching at the Arthur Findlay College (AFC). Even so, I would still attend Gordon’s courses and also his church at Longton, Staffordshire. PSYCHIC NEWS | MAY 2014

MEDIUMSHIP
It was only when I “ was working with my
mediumship that I felt and I knew it was the way in which my soul needed to express itself – that being a medium was my vocation in life.
”
Gordon would only get directly involved with a medium’s training once they had reached a certain stage in their development Once I had reached that stage, Gordon then took over the reins and became my mentor in the truest sense of the word.
mediumship, rather than the mechanics and rigidity that is sometimes taught, that has to be central to our mediumship, and to the training of mediumship in others.
Working as a medium just happened evening, in the introductary session, he invited me to stand on the platform and make a spirit contact for somebody in the audience, even though I’d never received any training, had no idea of how mediumship worked, or even if I was a medium! I informed him that I couldn’t do it – didn’t know how to do it – but he simply told me to ask who was there. I replied that it was “a father”, at which he asked, “Who in the audience does he want to speak to?” He instructed me: “Allow the father to move you, by the power, to the person he wants to speak to.” At this, I pointed out a young woman who was sitting in the audience, who agreed that her father was in the spirit world. Gordon then asked what the father wished to say to his daughter, and again I said I didn’t know. “Well, just ask,” said Gordon. At that moment something inspired me to tell the young woman that her father had only recently passed to the spirit world and had left her £500,000
primary focus of my life, as I was also running my own business. It became from churches, and people requesting my services. While running the business, so I knew I had a decision to make: full-time medium, or full-time business life? I kept asking the spirit world what they wanted me to do, but I received no answers. To help me make that decision I decided to have a private sitting with Glyn Edwards – a medium I respected greatly. I hoped the spirit world would give me the answer through his mediumship, though I said nothing of this to Glyn. He informed me that the decision to become a full-time medium was mine to make, but that if I did so, the spirit world would always ensure that there was enough work to provide for my physical needs. This has always been the case, and even though I’d had much success as a businessman, it never gave me real was only when I was working with my

Recently, the spirit world has wanted to work more with my clairaudience, but they have problems, as I trust my clairvoyance a little more! Even so, I have now given both the spirit world and myself permission and opportunity to manifest clairaudience more prominently in my work. It’s one of the reasons why this year I’ve accepted more invitations to demonstrate in Spiritualist churches, to give the spirit world the opportunity to strengthen this faculty.
If I look back over the survival evidence I have given, there are a number of pieces of evidence that stand out to me, but for different reasons. group of 16 students, and Gordon had a lady sitting next to him, who had visited different mediums for a number of years, hoping for a particular piece of evidence from her husband that nobody had yet given her. Gordon went to each of us and asked us to become aware of the lady’s husband to see if this particular piece of information would be communicated. Each student expressed what they were aware of, and when Gordon came to me I said I was not aware of anything. He informed me that I would have to stand there until I got the correct piece of information from the spirit world, and that nobody would leave the room until I had, even if that meant they would have to miss lunch! I stood there, shaking in my shoes, and silently cried out to God for help. Even though I knew I was still standing in the Large Lounge, I was actually standing in the middle of a TV studio. I could feel the cables under my feet, the heat of the lights, and I simply came out and said that her husband was a lighting technician in a TV studio. This was the piece of evidence the woman had been waiting all those years for, and needless to say everybody managed to have their lunch! Another piece that stands out to me was during a sitting I gave to a gentleman from his daughter who had been killed in a motorbike accident. As the sitting moved along I thought I was giving him quite strong evidence of his daughter, including her correct nickname, ‘Betty Boo’, but I was receiving no real response from him. As we came towards the close of the sitting, I told him his daughter wanted to say a few words to him, but that I couldn’t prove those words as they were not factual evidence. She wanted to say: “You’re the best dad in the world and I wouldn’t change you for anything.” He immediately broke down, and I asked what I’d done or said. His wife explained: “Paul, you don’t realise this, but the week
before she was killed we told her that he was not her real father, and her response was, “You’re the best dad in the world and I wouldn’t change you for anything.” This was the last conversation the two of them had before she passed to spirit.

HEALING EXPERIENCE I want to tell you about my amazing treatment with Paul, the spirit surgeon who works through the trance mediumship of Ray Brown. After 22 months of severe pain, I am back to my old self again, no longer riddled with pain and feeling loads happier.
The healer who gave me back my life Reader Samantha Melvin shares her moving journey from agonising physical incapacity to restored health, through the power of spiritual healing.
On 18th December 2011 I gave birth to my Son Ollie and was kept in hospital for a couple of days. The night I got home, I pushed my reclining sofa towards the door. This caused a very sharp pain in the left side of my groin. The next day I was in agony and couldn’t walk. I phoned the emergency doctors and they said it sounded like Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction, a condition in which the ligaments that normally keep the pelvic bone aligned during pregnancy become too relaxed and stretchy, making it unstable and painful. The doctors prescribed some tablets but over the next couple of days I still could not walk and putting my left foot on

Then in May 2013 the doctors sent me back for physiotherapy, and that made my pain worse. I had a much-needed holiday booked for August and was worried my pain was going to ruin it. I heard about Ray Brown through a friend who had seen his advert inPsychic News. I was very sceptical, but so desperate that I would have tried anything to make me feel better. So my dad arranged a meeting with Ray.
I cannot thank Ray and Paul “enough. They have given me back my life. I feel so much happier in myself, and my friends and family have said I am like my old self again.
horrendous pain. I had to sleep on the sofa and be carried to the toilet. Once the tablets kicked in I could walk again but I was still in agony. After a couple more days I went to my own doctor as the pain was not improving. I was sent to hospital and subsequently admitted to Intensive Care with septicaemia (blood poisoning), whereupon I collapsed. When I came round, the pain was still there and I asked if I could have an X-ray to identify the cause, but that never happened.

sit and cry, thinking I would be like that forever. When I stayed with my parents they had to carry me up and down the stairs, as I could not even climb them.
I continued to live in agony, looking after my two children and some days struggling to do anything at all. After a few more medical appointments I was sent for physiotherapy, which just made me even worse. Eventually I went for a CT scan but the results were normal. I continued suffering, having good days and bad days. If I overdid it one day I would really pay for it the next. I couldn’t walk very far, or sit or stand for long, and I could not sleep. Some days the pain was so bad that I wouldn’t even get dressed. I would just
We went to Lutterworth in Leicestershire to see him – about an hour’s drive for us. I was in so much pain with my lower back, that I could not even feel my leg, which was completely numb. I also had a dreadful stabbing pain in my groin.
When Paul, the doctor who works through Ray, called my name I was so nervous. However, he sat me down for a little chat about what had been going on in the last 21 months, and straightaway said he knew what my problem was.
”
Paul asked me to lie down on the couch and proceeded to work on the Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction through my groin area with the help of his assistant, Gillian. He then turned his attention to my lower back, which he said had trapped nerves. After a while he asked me to sit up and slowly get off the bed. I could not believe it – I actually had no pain or numbness! I was amazed and cried with happiness. I felt as if a massive weight had been lifted off my shoulders. Paul said the nerves were very swollen and gave me a pot of cream to rub on my back and groin. I cannot thank Ray and Paul enough. They have given me back my life. I feel so much happier in myself, and my friends and family have said I am like my old self again. needed. I have lost all faith in doctors. ®

YOUR QUESTIONS
WHY THE EMBARRASSING ADDRESSES?
ASK A MEDIUM
Dear Colin I have been a Spiritualist for just over ten years and have visited about 20 different churches in that time. I guess all of them have different things to offer but I am really struck by how bad the philosophical addresses are in most of them. I know it is all supposed to be about inspirational speaking but so much of what they say seems to be speakers. Can you explain why it has to be the medium who does the talk? Even if the medium is a good one, it doesn’t mean they are necessarily a good public speaker. In fairness I have seen a small handful who can do both jobs well, but wouldn’t it be better if people did the job they were best at, rather than attempting to be jacks of all trades? Was it always the job of a medium to do the demonstration and the address?

Oracle card guidance is relevant because our spirit guide will help us to choose a particular card. Some believe the cards work through the Law of Attraction, where positive thinking attracts positive outcomes. Each card features general, common and useful

DIVINATION of service to others and an attitude of gratitude will yield riches beyond your wildest dreams, but only if you don’t have acquisition as a goal. Giving no thought for any reward is suggested today. You are encouraged to write a list of all the people and events that you are grateful for. There are no friends and no enemies in life, only teachers. Be grateful for laughter and for tears. Gratitude is a magnet for love in all forms. From Isis Oracle by Alana Fairchild, with artwork by Jimmy Manton (published by Blue Angel), I have chosen the card titled ‘The Divine Guardian’ with a subtitle ‘Protection of the Winged Mother’. From the booklet, this card reveals you are going through a time of spiritual growth and healing. Growth sets its own challenges, many of which can be confronting. There are many changes taking place internally and externally in your life. You are protected by the love and strength of the Lady Isis with her wings outstretched in love and power. These changes are a test, and you may need to take some calculated risks but stay true to your beliefs even if your nearest and dearest do not support you because they might fear losing your support as you venture into a new life. The changes are spiritual opportunities which are presented now you are ready for them. It is imagine a sea of golden light. A wave arises within the ocean to reveal a beautiful golden winged goddess emerging from the water. She rises until she is above you and wraps her wings around you until you feel safe, loved and protected. As she breathes, her wings open a little and close softly around you. All is well. A sword is emitting a wonderful light and is emblazoned with scarabs. She waves this magical sword
in the air and all around you a sphere of protection is created.
Creating your own personalised deck It’s possible to create a deck of oracle cards for your own private use or to provide readings for others. Titles and messages might be channelled from spirit or they can be favourite sayings or spiritual ideas that are important to you personally. However, the artwork you use must be in the public domain (and out of copyright) or you must get permission from the artist to reproduce their artwork. Then create a number of cards to include a title and message. Many oracle card decks are made into an app for iPhone or iPod to provide a quick card reading for downloads. If you wish to self-publish your deck, there are a number of card deck manufacturers who will print them for you but you will need to be involved in distribution and advertising in order to recoup the costs. Alternatively, if you have good original artwork and a new angle, US Games Inc., Llewellyn Worldwide, AGM Urania, Schiffer and Hay House (the big names in card publishing who have excellent distribution and advertising outlets) might be interested in publishing your deck but look carefully at their submission guidelines before applying.

JARGON-BUSTER
What does it all mean? The PN jargon-buster
Every special interest group has its own quirky language – jargon – often unintelligible to anyone else. Just look at the medical profession – or the game of cricket! Sadly, Spiritualists are no exception, with a plethora of weird and wonderful words relating to mediumship and spiritual matters, most of which would never arise in ‘normal’ conversation. So, by popular request, each month we’ll attempt to demystify some.
The Ba:
In Ancient Egypt, believed to be the essence of an entity, whether animate or inanimate. In a human context, there is a very rough similarity to the present-day concept of personality. The Ba of a human being was whatever made that person an individual, and it lived on after the death of the physical body. The Ba of a human being was represented in tomb paintings as a bird with a human head: it day, but had to return to the tomb to rejoin its body at night. It was thought to be able to travel between the worlds of the living and the dead, and to link with the Ka of the dead person (see next entry).
The Ka: ‘Breathed’ into every human being in Ancient Egypt at birth. It was a vital force, the factor by which the life of every person was made possible. The physical body died when the Ka left it. It was deemed essential for food and other necessities of everyday life to be present in the tomb, together with the carefully preserved body of the deceased, so that the Ka could recognise its former ‘home’,
make use of its ‘home comforts’, and rejoin the Ba of the dead person.
ChaKras: In Hinduism and several other major religions in Asia, there are believed to be numbers of chakras or energy points in various parts of the human body, though they have not been detected by present-day Western anatomical studies. Seven major chakras appear to be associated with the central nervous system: these are located at the crown of the head, and the brow,
the vertebral column between the approximate position of the throat and the base of the spine. ‘Chakra’ is a Sanskrit word, meaning ‘wheel’: the sites denoted by this term are regarded as ‘whirlpools’ of energy.
The pineal gland: A small
pine-cone-shaped endocrine gland located between the two halves of the brain. It produces several hormones, including melatonin, which regulates sleep and circadian rhythms. It is thought that in

Traditionally in Asia and for several centuries in Europe it has been regarded as a ‘third eye’, and is linked with the brow chakra (see previous entry) and thought to be associated with clairvoyant ability.
Zener Cards:
simple symbols printed on cards for use in parapsychology experiments in which subjects could be tested for ESP (extra-sensory perception). The symbols consist of an equal-armed cross, 3 vertical wavy lines, an outline square, an outline circle, and an outline 5-pointed star. The complete ‘suit’ of cards contains 5 of each symbol. Dr Karl Zener devised the symbols in the 1930s for use in Dr J B Rhine’s parapsychology laboratory at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. It satisfaction of sceptical researchers from the sight of experimental subjects; sceptics suspected that when facing across a table an experimenter holding a card, a subject could perceive (because of ‘see-through’) a dim image through the back of the card of the symbol on the front. Even with a screen set up to conceal the experimenter’s hands and the cards from the subject, it was still thought to be possible for the subject to see the image of the symbol on the card – ® eyes or spectacles! and as soon as he was able to get out of bed he set to work in his laboratory in an attempt to make as much progress as was humanly possible in the short time he thought he had left. As the days and weeks passed, he became stronger and stronger, and was convinced that his drive and sense of purpose were what kept him alive. He felt a great sense of dissatisfaction with the way doctors were taught to focus on the disease or condition, rather than paying attention to the whole person. Bach’s research into vaccines went well and in 1919 he started to work at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital, where he aspired to a more holistic approach to treating people. Testing literally thousands of plants and preparing as many remedies, he eventually found he could change his patient’s feelings and emotions with the remedies he had formulated. In a speech to a conference on ‘Building Resilience’, Andrew Halls, Headmaster of King’s College School, south-west London, warned that exam system, body-image pressures and family breakdowns were all taking their toll. “The frenetic dash from home to school, often after too little sleep, a day of ceaseless activity, and then the evening trying to juggle homework with chatter from electronic devices, proves too much for many. “As a head teacher I have seen the pressures grow steadily from schools, parents and, above all, from the children,” said Andrew Halls. Schools are increasingly turning to Mindfulness, an ancient practice of meditation with its origins in Buddhism, but equally accessible to those of all faiths or none. It involves training the attention to be aware, in the present moment, of thoughts, feelings and body sensations that arise,
without judgement or aversion. Mindfulness works by reducing random thinking or rumination and replacing it with connectedness in the present to the senses, to the immediate surroundings and to other people.

PIONEERS OF SPIRITUALISM
10 years of pioneering The project to make the pioneers of Spiritualism better known began with what can only be described as a disturbing dream. The dream was alarming, but unlikely. In it, I was told that Psychic News was being shut down. It was 1999 and the newspaper (as it was then) had moved in 1995 from London to Stansted, where it appeared settled. But to set in motion a long-simmering project.
Leslie
Price
The journal Psypioneer is highly respected for its intellectually rigorous approach to the history of Spiritualism. This month, as it celebrates a decade in print, its founding editor Leslie Price reveals that the publications genesis was rather less intellectual . . .
In 1968, I was about to leave university and had seen advertised in PN the job of Receptionist/Clerk at the College of Psychic Science at a salary of £750 per annum. I applied and was appointed, and was given day to-day admin of the library and its attached archives. Ruby Yeatman, the principal, had once been librarian and had lovingly preserved them. Here were the original notebooks in which Stainton Moses received spirit teachings; the séance attendance books of early Helen Duncan physical séances upstairs in the College; and hundreds of books by and about pioneers, nearly all of which were out of print. The original works of Lyceum founder Andrew Jackson Davis, thoughtful books by the Rev William Stainton Moses – a powerful physical and mental medium known as ‘M.A. Oxon’ – and most works by Emma Hardinge Britten, were hard to obtain elsewhere. PN editor Maurice Barbanell had tried to preserve knowledge of the pioneers by reprinting what he could, not least in the Psychic Book Club. PN managing director Percy Wilson often drew attention to the importance of Victorian investigations. In 1974, PN printed my lament – Why do we neglect our pioneers? Our friends the Theosophists, who were formed in 1875 two years after the British National Association of Spiritualists,

faced a similar problem, but from 1985 they had a journal titled Theosophical History, and regular historical conferences. Could something like that be done for Spiritualism? It was actually an Australian Theosophist, Gladney Oakley, who advised me to start something online about psychic pioneers. My old friend Tony Hern, once the vicechairman of the Psychic Youth Group, was well versed in computers. He built a website. The Spiritual Truth Foundation (STF), a Spiritualist charity, made two generous grants. The Psychic Pioneer became a dot com! Its website carried news items about the pioneers, plus book reviews and editorials. Several slender pamphlets were also produced, and were given a friendly welcome in PN. But in 2001 the project ground to a halt. I had been knocked back by realising how much one of my personal heroes among the pioneers – Dr Raynor Johnson – had been involved with an Australian cult. I had been further worried by the case of an Indian guru, once much publicised in PN, who had been accused by the successors of Two Worlds columnist Peggy Mason of serious offences. (He is now deceased.) And I used to become anxious: was enough new content being posted on the website? In 2004 I tried again with a new approach, already popular among specialist audiences – the online newsletter. Psypioneer began in May 2004. It had no special structure – just a simple Word Paul Gaunt, a student on the Spiritualists’ National Union courses, who had become very interested in the pioneers. He was Psypioneer and soon took on its distribution by email. Paul also began to scan material for

Though we are not evidentially orientated, we have revived some remarkable cases, such as the ‘Great Shark Case’ in Australia, and more recently the spirit return of Raymond, the son of Sir Oliver Lodge. During the past year, two spin-offs from Psypioneer have emerged. Paul Gaunt himself has been invited to edit a revamped SNU quarterly Pioneer journal, devoted to the Union’s own pioneers. This offers fascinating reading on, for example, the early days of the Arthur Findlay College, the links between Mrs Britten and Ernest Oaten, and most recently the part played by the SNU in helping casualties of the Great War. SPIRITUALISM
By David Hopkins
Take a chance,
chance, chance. . . connected with that area. We all know of wines from parts of France, of Jersey royals, Cornish pasties, Devon cream and more. Some even have ‘protected’ status to prevent forgeries or clones or look-alikes.
I must have heard it said many times by knowledgeable Spiritualists that there are no ‘coincidences’ and I think lots of us would agree. However, of late I’ve been pondering, taking it perhaps a step forward.
A pre-planned life? In the past, when Sweden was mentioned, Volvo and Saab came to mind (both are now owned by outsiders). Sweden was thought of by some as a country where anything goes – when in fact it was and still is a country whose people are somewhat conservative, careful and reserved.
a dream’ or to ‘believe in angels’ and many more gems of wisdom. It might even be possible to get lots of the songs and put them together to create a story about life, love and real people, then call it after one of those songs. I wonder why no one has done it before!
connections. Even before I had the lovely Swedish bride, I was a fan of that second big ‘export’- the wonderful Abba (my keyboard doesn’t do letters reversed!). We often hear that after initial success there was a period when it became ‘uncool’ to state an admiration and liking of Abba music but that never affected my enjoyment. extremely well constructed and the words to have a great deal of meaning, in a and feelings that touch us. It wouldn’t be

scene near the end where the actress Julie Walters jumps onto the table and urges someone to “take a chance” on her. I wonder what your personal response to that word might be, and what the views of Spiritualists would be: is there such a thing as chance? Can we have ‘coincidences’ in our lives? Do we have ‘accidents’ occasionally? There is a Chinese saying that everything, even an accident, starts in the head – in other words that we are capable of preventing ‘misadventure’ by being in balance. How far would you go along with that concept?
If there isn’t chance or coincidence or luck (good or bad), does that imply that all that happens to us in this life has already been ‘arranged’ to a fairly major degree? Who would have done the arranging? Who made the decisions? Were they imposed? Did we have any part in the planning? Did our ‘higher self,’ in conjunction (or not) with our ‘lower self’, organise and plan the course or actions and reactions we would go through? To what extent are happenings in this life dependent on our existence prior to this life – be that here on earth or elsewhere, in an independent form or as part of a group or greater whole? If we are inclined to accept that there is a blueprint, a plan, an architect’s drawing with quantities, materials, measurements all laid out before construction begins, where does the concept behind ‘Personal Responsibility’ do we have?
SPIRITUALISM
Did we perhaps exercise that responsibility before we embarked on this leg of the journey? Will our lives play themselves out because or in spite of us, and what we feel, do, say, think, or how we react, on a daily basis? Can we equate ‘personal responsibility’ with free will to any major extent? Have the cards been dealt and we must simply play the hand given? Have the dice been thrown, the die cast? Is change possible, likely, inevitable, impossible, thinkable, unthinkable? Is there someone who does know better (even if us in a different form or time)? Why bother to be good? Why strive, out in a preordained plan, lodged in a vault somewhere up beyond the clouds? What has God got planned for us? Do we know, want to know, care?
Is God still learning? Let me put another theory to you – well, more of a ‘what if’ situation. What if, instead of there being no coincidences, chance, random events, we have a board on which our life is set out? We have a beginning, an end, certain points we must pass, certain situations that may be encountered or skipped over, equipment that will help us get through all the obstacles, that we may or may not need to use, cards to draw, dice to throw. What if God is not living our lives for us but living them with us? Could it be that God has created all we need, given us all we require to get to the end of the game, but is leaving it to us and chance to see what numbers we roll, what cards we draw, what problems we face, what decisions we make? And while we are making those decisions is he with us? And while we are learning from the results of our decisions is he also learning from those same results? What if the Almighty is not just the gamesetter, referee, judge or arbiter but actually part of the game itself? Is there the remote possibility that God doesn’t know it all… yet, but is actually progressing, growing? Becoming better at his role by allowing the cards to fall as they will, and seeing how we respond? Seeing what actions we take, what reactions are produced – getting ‘onthe-job’ training, in fact? To what extent are our lives intertwined with the life of God? To what extent are we totally dependent upon his actions, decisions and predetermined view of existence? Or could there be a far greater role for us?

As a living being, God too can be bigger, better, stronger, more compassionate, more caring, wiser than the point in eternity at which we all now are. Maybe life isn’t all planned, or a random series of events. Perhaps the truth lies somewhere in between. Could it be that we have points in life we are destined to pass through but the journey between those points can be subject to an readjustments? How much control does God want, I wonder?
That ‘something’ was that I met my wife, years earlier we could have met when I was in Sweden, but for a relationship to develop the timing would have been wrong. We didn’t meet, though I was actually staying in her village! This ‘second time’ we met. . . well, the rest is, as they say, history. I’m absolutely certain that in some ‘greater plan’ we were, and are, meant to be together. So does that throw my earlier musings out of the window? Have I scuppered my own theory? Who knows? I don’t have all or many of the answers, but that won’t stop me posing the questions. It’s more likely to encourage me to ask them! Spiritualism is about answers but even more about questions. ®

Veteran Liverpool medium Eddy Emmery, now deceased, was instrumental in launching me as a medium onto the Spiritualist circuit. He was a good friend of my Aunty Louise (also a medium), and they would spend many a cosy hour putting Spiritualism to rights over a cup of tea. PICTORIAL evidence that a healer under laboratory conditions transmits a vital force to patients came from America last week. Yehuda Isk, a Polish-born typewriter mechanic living in Greycoat Gardens, SW London, was rigorously tested by famous US researcher Dr Thelma Moss. She obtained remarkable results at California University’s Neuropsychiatric Institute, as the accompanying composite photograph shows. A volunteer, feeling unwell, photographed using the Kirlian method which registers auric emanations. Compared to Isk’s it was a sickly haze. After the healer began treatment a new set of pictures were taken. These showed the corona roles were dramatically reversed; the patient’s were bright auric circles, Isk’s pale and shrunken.
increased in intensity. “I strongly believe we are making visible something which radiates from the body of a person with healing power.”
“While you treat a subject, the corona gets weaker and smaller. By the time treatment has almost disappeared.”
Of this experiment Dr Moss said, “We know that some energy transfer occurred.”
To demonstrate that healers possess “something” those not similarly gifted lack, Dr Moss experimented. She found everyone had a corona, but healers were quantitatively different. Isk, who has lived in Israel, asked Dr Barbara Rotenberg, of Nordau Street, Hadera, to comment. As PN told (January 5), this doctor has seen Isk at work.
Isk wanted this medico to say how his gift compared with acupuncture. Here, it is believed, the energy charge for healthy tissue is transmitted through needles to sick areas until the levels balance.

Dr Rotenberg said: “Your activity is identical, except in your case the electro-magnetic force is passing from the outside. You have this force in great surplus while your patient lacks it.”

It must not be for more than ten minutes because the rate of electricity in my body changes after this time.” His test is simple. A patient puts both arms in canisters of water. This enables his bodily electricity rate to be measured. “It varies with different illnesses,” he said. “For some ailments it rises, for others [it] falls.” The healer, known as ‘The Man With Electric Hands,’ believes all sickness is caused when the body’s electrical circuit becomes faulty. He thinks this causes a chemical change for which a medical antidote can be found. Technique reveals the aura KIRLIAN photography, seen in our illustration, is a technique invented over 30 years ago by a Russian husband and wife team. They are Semyon and Valentina Kirlian, from Krasnador, near the Black Sea. A specially-constructed high-frequency spark or lamp generator is used. This method reveals the play of high-frequency currents on humans, plants and animals, as well as inanimate matter. From the maze of varicoloured energy around us, scientists have made some striking discoveries about man’s normally invisible nature. Russian researchers took Kirlian photographs of healer Alexei Krivorotov. His hands were taken at rest and during healing. The results were strikingly different.

Ventnor Spiritualist Church celebrates 75 years VENTNOR Spiritualist Church, Isle of Wight, recently celebrated 75 years of Spiritualism in its present building in North Street with a service of rededication. The greatly anticipated anniversary weekend of 15th/16th March was launched with what organisers described as “an excellent demonstration” on the Saturday evening in the beautiful setting of the Lakeside Park Hotel. Three mediums took part, beginning with Julie Grist CSNU, president of Cowes church and an Arthur Findlay College tutor. She was followed by Debbie Morley of Ventnor church, a recipient of the Gordon Higginson Memorial Scholarship 2013. The third medium, also a recipient of the Gordon Higginson Memorial Scholarship, was Darren Orlowski of Eastleigh church. The mediumship of all three was well received by a capacity audience of 125. The rededication service took place on Sunday, attended by church members and their guests, plus Southern District Council guests and friends of the church. SNU president, Minister David Bruton, conducted the much-enjoyed service, notable for a recorded address by Minister Eric Hatton, who was unable to be present in person owing to poor health. After the recording ended, the congregation was invited to share a minute’s silence,

Spiritualism is believed to have begun in Ventnor as recorded date of meetings, held in a house in Upper Ventnor, was in 1921. Ernest Oaten, then editor of Two Worlds, dedicated the present church on 30th November 1938. Ventnor had many problems during World War II. Apart from a bomb which destroyed part of the church, there was the persistent rumour that the Spiritualist church knew when and where the bombs would drop! Mr Jermy had to involve the police to put a stop to the trouble caused. At that time Spiritualism was not legally recognised,

Over the years the list of prominent speakers invited to Ventnor reads like a Spiritualist hall of fame. Among them were Helen Duncan, Helen Hughes, Nan McKenzie, Harry Edwards, Harold Sharpe, Ernest Oaten, Bertha Harris, Russell Harwood and William Olsen. Sometimes, after a major event has taken place there is a sense of anti-climax, but Ventnor has been left feeling invigorated, ready to work for spirit for another 75 years. Current president Sonia Bewick says: “Enjoy looking at our website and see what we offer in our services, groups, circles and special events. Please come and visit us. You will be greeted with love and enthusiasm as ® someone who shares a similar quest for truth.”
