How can spatial organisation practices contribute to a more empowering and emancipating way of living for urban communities under economic and/or social pressure? How can commoning practices, within such a community, shape spatialities and enhance already existing activities in order to reach a sustainable future?

already existing structure

By re-imagining the shapeless, non-space, that surrounds this very diverse and often overlooked historical neighbourhood in the centre of Athens, through an ideological prism that questions the role of the architect, of modern planning and of the current socio-economic system, this project aims to introduce the notion of commoning practices to contemporary urban environments, as an emancipating way to answer everyday challenges. The neighbourhood this study takes place in, is home to refugees, immigrants, homeless and poverty stricken people, in a city where the global economic crisis hit hard. In other words people living at the very edges of society. It is co-existing in a crisis-ridden city.

“A Circular Consolidation Centre promoting a flexible, sustainable approach to waste and goods management” Sustainable Building Competition CTH in collaboration with 3XN - Special Prize with: M. Alwan, A. Fornaca, G. Gaioni, N. Shabarek // 2017, December digital tools: AutoCAD, Rhino, V-ray, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign my contribution: general concept, typical plan design, visualisations and presentation

14

Contrary to what usually happens with such buildings, this Circular Consolidation Centre is a landmark to the city, celebrating those city functions that architecture and urban planning has striven to hide the most: storage, waste management and logistics.

urban

features

By revealing such functions, an opportunity for education and awareness arises, concerning the city’s needs for logistic services and the amount of waste that city dwellers produce, in order to reach a sustainable future in urban communities. By mixing several types of functions (i.e. office spaces, workshops, commercial areas etc), with the logistic/ storage/waste management, we conceptually explore the potential of an alternative way of urban planning, where the widely accepted function placement is questioned.

Fixoteket Etapp 2 “A recycled recycling centre for Hammarkullen’s Fixoteket” Dare to Build | Pilot project | CTH in collaboration with RICE university, Göteborgs Stad, Bostadsbolaget & Hyresgästföreningen // 2018, June my contribution: foundation laying, colour palette development, installation of the polycarbonate wall

20

Fixoteket Etapp 2 is the second part of a design and build project that started in November 2017. During Etapp 1, two containers were re-used to host a wood and metal workshop for Hammarkullen’s Fixoteket. During June 2018, the project was resumed and oriented towards designing and building a recycling centre for the Fixoteket complex, as well as providing a unifying landscape proposal for the area in between the three parts of Fixoteket.

workshop

area in-between

recycling centre

The purpose of this project was to provide, apart from a ready-to-use upcycling/recycling station, a platform on which people can interact, help and learn from each other and enhance the culture of collaboration and creativity already in place.

visualisations * Hammarkullen is a Gothenburg suburban area, designed and built in the ‘70’s, as a paradigm of the so-called modern lifestyle. Nowadays, even though it is perceived as a ghetto, it’s actually home to Gothenburg’s most vibrant and lively immigrant communities. *

Choosing a colour scheme based on the co-creation workshop and on the desires expressed by Kretslopp och Vatten

By replacing one of the container’s walls with polycarbonate, the Recycling Station can enhance the feeling of safety, by providing street lighting at night. A semi-permeable material such as polycarbonate can also enhcance the connection to the outdoor space.

Restoration and re-use of the abandoned railway station of Myloi, Argolis “The wanderer’s museum”

Master’s thesis in DUTh, School of Architectural Engineering // 2015, September digital tools: AutoCAD, SketchUp, Artlantis, Adobe Photoshop

24

In a country where privatisations occur at an increasingly fast pace, buildings that comprise a place’s history and heritage, seem to face an uncertain future. This abandoned railway station is the testbed for an attempt to provide a sustainable re-thinking of an area with a lot of potential, in order to protect it from destructive profit-driven practices, while celebrating its history. The five buildings that used to be part of the railway station are now the different parts of a railway museum that is not only confined within the walls of the buildings but expands to a unification of the whole area, through the landscape.

Privatize everything, privatize the sea and the sky, privatize the water and the air, privatize justice and the law [...]. And finally, privatize the States, surrender once and for all their exploitation to private companies through international share offering. There lies the salvation of the world... and, while you’re at it, privatize your w***e mothers.

There is a deliberate frugality in design interventions, along with an absence of boldly imposed design decisions, as a means to prevent radical change and the potentially disastrous consequences this can have for a settlement of 1000 permanent inhabitants. Discretely highlighting what’s already there is the main strategy used to reimagine this area.
