2017 Weiwuying Annual Report
Weiwuying taps the general wisdom to initiate artistic participation In Fengshan, Kaohsiung, the town with the prolong development in Taiwan, we intent to become a platform connecting various arts and culture fields, gathering creativity and linking everyone's dreams together! Weiwuying is an art center for all the people. It provides a space that accommodates high quality performance arts and attracts audiences to participate actively, thus creating a cultural and creative atmosphere in the field. The concept of development extends from "the Center of Arts for All" in 2015 to "the Participatory Style of All" in 2016, and further into "the Creation of a Participatory Art Base" in 2017. It includes various activities, i.e. international forums, citizen forums, round-table talks among southern cultural leaders, etc. We invite people with different cultural and professional backgrounds to participate in the dialogues across the horizon. Starting from Kaohsiung, these activities increase the exchanges, dialogues and participation, promoting the core values and specific practices of the art center.

Collaboration with international partners to step onto the world stage In 2017, Weiwuying focused on international connections and the cultivation of local talent. In addition to launching a number of high quality programs and co-productions, it collaborated with international well-known art performing organizations to jointly organize professional workshops. It has entered substantive cooperation in the development of content with the young European choreographer network platform Aerowaves and the 2019 Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space ("PQ"). Continuing the 2016 Taiwan dance platform that successfully promoted domestic choreographer KuanHsiang Liu onto the Aerowaves and connected with international exchanges, it signed a cooperation agreement with PQ in 2017 to train the young generation of theater designers and creative talent, and continued to run the only circus platform in Taiwan. It also hopes to inspire the local theatrical troupes, expand their audiences, guide Taiwanese young artists into the international community, and promote bilateral substantive cooperation. For two consecutive years, Weiwuying Arts Festival held the largest scale circus platform in Taiwan. For the first time, in 2017, it cooperated with the French Centre National des Arts du Cirque ("CNAC") to bring in new professional training on magic. It is hoped that through its alliance with the major international organizations, Weiwuying will be able to become a gate to the world of Taiwanese new productions and artists.

Connecting to southern partners to create an industry circle for arts and culture Bearing the historical context of nurturing and training talent, Weiwuying is the only national performance art center and multi-function venue in the southern Taiwan. Not only is it expected to train and discover talented artists of performing arts in Kaohsiung, but it also plans to work together with other southern venues to create a cycle for the arts and culture industry. Cultural officers from southern cities and counties were invited to hold a dialogue on the cooperation projects, i.e. “Share Informations of Programs and Production Plans", "Professional Trainings of Stage Operations and Techniques" and “Resident Platform of International Artists"; for the first time, three programs from the Weiwuying Circus Platform were introduced to the Performing Art Center of Chiayi County. In addition, the "Cin Cinema", one of the highlights in Weiwuying Arts Festival, was brought to Pingtung Performing Art Hall, allowing audiences in the south to have the opportunity to enjoy high quality performances both here and abroad. In 2017, Weiwuying expanded its workshops for professional talent, and increased its promotion of art lectures on campuses, corporate associations, international symposium and professional development for creative producers. It also extended a series of workshops on the arts of living that enabled the general public to attend. It also continued to provide professional programs for art studies, aiming to foster young observers and commentators. Through the vision of the new generation, it can create a dialogue on art and culture across the horizon, extending and promoting artistic life for the general public. These plans are expected to be extended to other southern venues in 2018. The core values of Weiwuying lie in art exhibition and realization of inspiration. Let all kinds of possibilities shine at Weiwuying.

Expand Multivariate Content to Ignite Artistic Energy In 365 days, we held 423 events that attracted more than 250,000 visitors. Weiwuying is the only national performance art venue in the southern Taiwan, and meets the expectations of the public. Not only does it hope to present high-quality performances, but it also plans to ignite new energy for performing arts to attract massive numbers of performing artists to join and inject their great efforts, sparking inspiration across various spectrums for the performing arts industry.

Sheu Fang-Yi, an internationally renowned dancer who performed in Kaohsiung for the very first time as a solo dance troupe, was invited by Weiwuying to bring in the latest choreography, allowing audiences in the south to enjoy the great tribute of her 25 years' overseas career.

Weiwuying Circus Platform
Weiwuying planned its first large-scale circus art event in 2016, the Weiwuying Circus Platform. For this year, we looked back to the origins of circuses. The term "circus", originated from the Latin word "Circle"; it not only represents the excitement of the circus to gather audiences, but also assembles all kinds of artistic forms into one!

Weiwuying Arts Festival
We invited famous Taiwanese artists and top artists from Europe, America and Japan to bring the most stunning and imaginative works of art to the audience. The exhibitions spanned from dance and music to drama and circus, bringing together the original and beautiful sounds from around the world to the "Hotter than the Sun Music Festival". Fused by the international symposium and professional development, it brought the audience one step closer to the world.

"Formosa" by Cloud Gate Dance Theatre
A whirling ocean along with a beautiful island. Chiang Hsun recited the words of contemporary writers in depicting the Island, with the verbal subtitles linked to the visual scenery stacked with Chinese characters on the projection screen. Along with the vicissitudes of singing by Sangpuy winding through, the Cloud Gate dancers manifested harmony, conflict, frustration and hope with their powerful dance movements.

2017 Weiwuying Annual Report The five-week Arts Festival ran from October 27th to November 26th. Among all of the shows, the highest profile one was the "AMAHARA: When a Gray Taiwanese Cow Stretched" brought by Ishinha, a 47-year-old Japanese theater troupe. After the demise of its Director Yukichi Matsumoto in 2016, the troupe continued to support his will to perform in Taiwan and decided to stage a final disbandment in Kaohsiung. The unique aesthetics of the troupe and the outdoor stage shaped as a giant ship brought a unique drama viewing experience to the audience. The magnificent view along with the visual and auditory enjoyment was impossible to duplicate. The single largest "Circus Platform" in Taiwan continued to invite new teams from Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, France and Taiwan to bring about subversive and dazzling performances. For this year, Weiwuying Arts Festival attempted to further expand its influence in the artistic field. We held the evening market and the event "Memory under the Banyan Trees" that featured outdoor large-scale light carving and enabled the general public to get closer from various angles to enjoy the diverse art displays. It also generated a publicity effect via new media and visual topics, paving the way for the official launch of the new venue through considerable media exposure. Collaborate with international partners to step onto the world stage Weiwuying as the Global Talent Hub
Founded in 1996, Aerowaves is a platform for young choreographers, with 45 partners from more than 32 member states; it is one of the most important and influential dance networks in Europe. The collaboration between Weiwuying and Aerowaves began in 2016 at the "Taiwan Dance Platform" during the Weiwuying Arts Festival. Aerowaves selected the choreographic work of Kuan-Hsiang Liu, a Taiwanese choreographer, and for the very first time, an Asian work was selected by the platform. In order to extend closer bilateral cooperation, a cooperation plan was formally signed in March 2017. In the future, outstanding works of young Asian choreographers will continue to be introduced onto the world stage, and excellent dances of international young choreographers will be introduced into Asia.

The Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space (PQ), which began in 1967 and has been held every four years thereafter, is one of the most important theatrical events in the world, with more than 5,000 professional theater workers and students from more than 80 participating countries. It has also attracted more than 30,000 non professionals to visit. Planned events include: exhibitions, performances, workshops, lectures, and seminars. It presents various contemporary theatrical art designs, such as clothing, stage, lighting, and sound effects. It also provides theatre architecture, special venue, multimedia performance, and performing arts specifically designed for dance, opera, theatrical performances, etc. Weiwuying and PQ2019 signed a bilateral cooperation plan in July. The projects include "Youth Design/ Creator Exchange", the "Global Internship Program" and the "Work Exchange Program". It is expected that the concrete cooperation content will help Taiwanese theater designers into international platform. 20

Incubation Program with Centre National des Arts du Cirque in November The French Centre National des Arts du Cirque ("CNAC") signed a partnership with the largest Weiwuying Circus Platform in Taiwan to launch the "New Magic" professional training in Taiwan for the first time with teachers from the CNAC. The latest French new circus art will be lectured at Weiwuying so that Taiwanese professional performers can obtain the latest knowledge and skills directly from the origin.

The cultivation of arts and culture meets the wide range of professional and public. Rallying top international lecturers to inspire creativity in daily life From April to July,The Young Singers Project of Traditional Taiwanese Drama. Performers and instructors Taiwanese opera is a kind of performance that originated in Taiwan and is closely related to local people's life. Weiwuying has been actively promoting training for talent to inherit this art. Together with the Bureau of Cultural Affairs under Kaohsiung City Government, it launched the " The Young Singers Project of Traditional Taiwanese Drama. Performers and instructors" to train young opera students. A total of 42 amateurs and student actors were recruited. On average, they are only 20 years old. The tailor-made fantastic opera, "The Hero Academy", enabled them to stage on the Dadong Culture and Arts Center with full confidence, showing the great results cultivated by a group of professional lecturers from all walks of life. This has enabled the continuation of traditional operas.

A ugust Teens in Theater Teens in Theater held during the summer vacation recruited students from senior high and vocational schools to attend. Planned professional theater courses include: development of imagination and body language, vocal expression, space and objects, utilization of light and shadow, deciphering curation, soundtrack production, costume design, plastic arts, theater master sharing, etc. These are aimed to inspire young people to learn about theatre works in depth, and to train theatre talent and cultivate young theatre observers.

2017 Weiwuying Professional Development Series Since the launch of the professional development program in 2016, it has received enthusiastic feedback from the professionals in the performing art field. This has been extended in 2017 with advanced courses developed and top domestic and foreign lecturers invited to join the program.

The Best Actress of Golden Bell Awards and senior theatre actress Wang Chuan led professional lecturers Ho Yi-fan and Liao Zi-yan to teach in the south.
Animal Transformation Actor’s Workshop
The Artistic Director of Short One Player, also a well-known theatre director and actor, Wei Jun-zhan led the professional group to explore the original inspiration and enlightenment from inside of their hearts, and to develop symbolic presentation skills.

Led by Pan Xuan-rong, the music director of "The Pure" and A Cappella lecturer of National Music Subject Center; the course allowed students to fully understand the vocal music that has more than 500 years of history but without instrumental accompaniment.

Haerry Kim, a Linklater Voice System certified instructor, was invited to lead a 9-day course. The professional training aims to help students regain consciousness of their own bodies, breathing, hearing and pronunciation.

September The Moving Space Michael Chekhov Technique Workshop
Ulrich Meyer-Horsch, the German Artistic Director of the Workshop, and Suzana Nikolić, the Director of Croatia, were invited to jointly bring about the Part II: The Moving Space to help professional actors get into their roles more quickly.
Paradise Interrupted Ink Wash vs. Kun Opera Workshop
The Paradise Interrupted was a one-act opera co-produced by Weiwuying, Lincoln Center, Spoleto Festival USA and Singapore Arts Festival. Originated from Suzhou's traditional ink wash, the international production was a combination of installation art and traditional Kun Opera. The workshop invited the international team behind the scenes to bring about the production of ink wash and the art of Kun Opera to present the secrets behind the scenes.
Baroque Music Student Orchestra Training Workshop
The workshop included all the leading Baroque musicians in Taiwan: Weng Yue-hong, Jian Zhi-xian, Tsui Hong-xia, Tsotsolis Vassilisis, Huang Qi-zhi, Li Yi-ying, Tsai Jia-xuan and other Baroque music instructors. The Baroque Ensemble Workshop was co-designed by Anton Steck, a well-known Baroque violinist and conductor in the international music world, leading students to recreate cultural literacy and the aesthetic skills of the 17th century.

Learning and Participation Local enterprises link together 1+1>2 Weiwuying is located in Kaohsiung, and frequently works closely with the local government. For the second year in a row, in partnership with the Kaohsiung Municipal Education Bureau, the 2017 Weiwuying Children's Festival created a summer magic city and a laboratory for parents and children, whereby the novel experience brought by performing arts can become deeply rooted in the hearts of family members and open up broader visions and minds for all. In the future, we will also expand cooperation with other southern cities, counties, and art venues. We will extend connection with the Culture & Tourism Bureau of Chiayi County, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Chiayi City, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Tainan City Government, the Bureau of Cultural Affairs of Kaohsiung City Government, the Cultural Affairs Department of Pingtung County Government, Taitung County Government Bureau of Cultural Affair, as well as other units. We will jointly discuss the content of regional cooperation in the industrial sphere of arts and culture to create a

more robust business environment and development.

Prospect in 2018 An Arts Center For The People Weiwuying is coming, welcome to explore and create. Cultural and touring activities bring new energy to the city For the year 2017, as we worked hard to prepare for the Grand Opening and actively urged the optimization of facilities and space, we continued to do our best to offer awesome performances to the audience, plan professional workshops for theater staff (crew and practitioners), develop cooperation (co-production) projects for international and southern venues, and organize various arts and cultural lectures for the public. Among them, it is worth mentioning that Ishinha, a specially invited Japanese theater troupe this year, brought economic benefits into the foreseeable future. This program had attracted more than 436 audiences from Japan to Taiwan to watch the final performance before their disbandment. In addition to the ticket sales benefiting Weiwuying, it also brought about NT$ 13 million of income revenue to Kaohsiung (based on three days and two nights, with expense per person at about NT$ 30,000 for a total of 436 audiences). Apart from that, there were added values from sales of airline tickets, business travel, and transportation. This successful experience has boosted Weiwuying's confidence in attracting international audiences to Taiwan upon its official launch in the future. The evening fair specially planned for the Weiwuying Arts Festival was also a critical initiative among the 2017 activities. Ten suppliers were invited to run a 6-day business in two weekends. This not only created a special cultural experience for the public, but also brought unexpected profits to the merchants.
Rooting in music education The expectation for the official opening is now brewing. In cooperation with the Education Bureau of Kaohsiung City Government on December 29th, Weiwuying invited local students of music classes to experience the vineyard style music hall in Kaohsiung first. There were 20 teachers and students of music class from 10 junior high schools participating in this event. Led by a professional tour guide, the participants experienced the venue for the very first time, with Liu Xinhong, the

Convener of the Organ Committee of the Weiwuying Preparation Office, offering onsite explanation about the fantastic acoustics. We also invited a violin trio to give students a full music feast. The media strongly supported this activity and continuously gave positive comments. After the official opening of the venue, art and culture education will serve as the first priority for Weiwuying to put down roots in the business development.
