Introduction to AGST Our school is considered as one of the formal Pentecostal Belief School of Theology which strongly stressed in Full Gospel, Pentecostal theology, spiritual exercises and mission practice. According to the research of scholars in various fundamental doctrines, the theology of Assemblies of God is the most pure one. The Assemblies of God is also one of the fastest growing groups. We are expecting that you can join us with enthusiasm!
The Historical Origin The predecessor of current Taiwan AGST (Assemblies of God School of Theology) is the Tai-Kuang Bible College (founded in 1953, and closed in 1966). For eight years lacking of graduates from AG bible school, it created a big loss for all the AG churches in Taiwan. There were no steady supplies of workers for Taiwan AG ministry. Not only cannot develop new AG ministry nor can find replacement for AG pastors who were ready to retire or leave. There were some non-AG
- 3-
educated pastors hired for AG ministry and later all left the work fields. A call to re-establish an AGST became a dire need for Taiwan AG ministry. At 1969, using the fund from selling Tai-kuang Bible School; Taiwan AG by the leadership of Pastor David Plymire purchased a piece of three acres land on the hill of Tatu mountain west of Taichung in preparation of building a new Theological School. AGST Establishment Later in June 1973 in the 14th annual meeting of Taiwan AG General Council, a resolution was passed to re-establish a new AG Theological School. (This is the first Pentecostal theological school in Taiwan.) Pastor Gao yao-ran was the first president. One year later, Pastor David Plymire assumed the presidency. After 1976, there were graduates from AGST. Also in 1982, AGST became a formal member of “Taiwan Theological School Association”. There are fourteen Theological Schools members currently.
During the forty-two years
(1973 – 2015), there are more than 140 students graduated from the AGST. If we conservatively estimate the students from the Extensions (Education Centers), there are over 500 benefited from the AGST education. Many of them went on to even higher degrees. Until
- 4-
today, most of the graduates still serve in the Kingdom in spreading the Gospel throughout this country and overseas shining for the Lord.
Development In response to the promotion of college education and school expansion, our school established Ministry Study (Religion Study) M.A. degrees in 2003. During 2006, there were the first graduating students of Ministry Study and Religion Study M.A. degrees. In the mean time for the increasing need on the job training and increasing demand for theological education purposes, AGST also established Taipei Extension in 2007 (Using the 2nd floor classroom in the Mark Building of Taipei Assembly of God Church).
Also in 2012 AGST
established the Tainan Extension (Using classroom in Tainan Assembly of God Church).
September 2015 AGST starts the
enrollment of the Master of Divinity students. By this yearend we will have more than 13,000 books in our library. June 2013 APTS also established Chinese Extension on our campus. This activity leads us to the further international academic exchange and new enrollments. In the meantime, AGST is actively pursuing to join APTA and ATA for
- 5-
membership and engaging in proper certification process.
Academic Recognition AGST is a member of Taiwan Federation of Christian Theological Schools; all courses were accredited to the Federation. Mission Statement and Core Values AGTS Mission Statement With the loyalty to the Bible we educate the kingdom workers with mature spirit and character in Pentecostal Beliefs. Core Values Pay strong attentions to Biblical roots. Receive the power from Holy Spirit. Live the sanctified life. Explanations: MISSION STATEMENT: The mission of AGST is through the study of Bible producing the kingdom workers who will loyal to the Pentecostal Theological Beliefs and mature in spirit and character. Maturing in spirit is a person who can not only establish good relationship with God and also keen to know and obey His will. Maturing in character is
- 6-
a person, who can establish good relationship with fellowmen including
emotional
management,
communication
and
coordination ability to work with the team. CORE VALUES:
To achieve the mission statement of AGST, our school should first focus on training rooted in biblical truth, in order to establish a solid spiritual foundation.
At the same time receive the Holy
Spirit anointing with desire in order to become effective ministry workers. Finally, for the long-lasting ministry and testimony we also should train students to have a sanctified life and a mature character in living.
Objective 1. In the future we hope that AGST will become the Chinese educational center for the “Pentecostal Beliefs” in Asia Pacific region. In order for Pentecostal full gospel can be inherited and carry forward. 2. Academic Specialty Academic specialty emphasizes Full Gospel, Pentecostal theology,
- 7-
spiritual practice and mission practices. 3. Educate kingdom workers.
Basic Beliefs 1. Bible is inspired by God: The whole Bible (including Old Testament and New Testament) is inspired by God. It is the revelation from God to men. It is the total completed foundation of our faith. But only the New Testament is the errorless guidelines for our practices and actions. 2. The only one true God: The only one true God who has revealed Himself as "I AM WHO I AM."
And self-expressed as “I AM” (In
Chinese, it translated as self-originated.) Even more obvious that He Himself contains the principle of joint togetherness, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. 3. Divinity of Lord Jesus Christ: Lord Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God, as the Bible declared – A. His virgin birth B. His sinless life C. His miracles D. His death on the cross for mankind - 8-
E. His bodily resurrection from the dead F. His exaltation at the right hand of God 4. The fall of men: Man was made with goodness and honesty. And God said: “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness”. But man rebel against God’s will and fall automatically, so not only lead to physical death and also a cause of spiritual death, which separates mankind from God. 5. The Salvation of Man: Man's only hope of redemption is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ the Son of God. (1) Conditions of Salvation: The grace of God, which brings salvation, has appeared to all men, through the preaching of repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ; man is saved by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit; and, being justified by grace through faith, he becomes an heir of God according to the hope of eternal life. (2) The Evidences of Salvation: (a)The inward evidence, to the believer, of his salvation is the direct witness of the Spirit. (b)The outward evidence, to all men, is a life of righteousness and
- 9-
true holiness. 6. Ordinances of the Church: a. Baptism in Water The ordinance of Baptism by a burial with Christ should be observed as commanded in the Scriptures, by all who have really repented and in their hearts have truly believed on Christ as Savior and Lord. In so doing, they have the body washed in pure water as an outward symbol of cleansing, while their heart has already been sprinkled with the blood of Christ as an inner cleansing. Thus they declare to the world that they have died with Jesus and that they have also been raised with Him to walk in newness of life. b. Communion (The Lord's Supper) The Lord's supper, consisting of the elements, bread and the fruit of the vine, is the symbol expressing our sharing the divine nature of our Lord Jesus Christ; “a memorial of His suffering and death; and a prophecy of His second coming; and is enjoined on all believers "till He come." 7. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit:
- 10 -
All believers are entitled to, and should ardently expect, and earnestly seek, the promise of the Father, the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and fire, according to the command of our Lord Jesus Christ. This was the normal experience of all in the early Christian Church. With it comes the endowment of power for life and service, the bestowment of the gifts of the Spirit and their uses in the work or the ministry. This wonderful experience is distinct from and subsequent to the experience of the new birth. Spiritual Baptism make people full of spirit, deepen reverence for God, more willing to sanctify and concentrating in ministry (Acts 2:42), and more fervent love for Christ, His Word and the lost. 8. The Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit: The Baptism of believers in the Holy Spirit is witnessed by the initial sign of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit of God gives them utterance. The speaking in tongues in this instance is the same in essence as the gift of tongues, but different in purpose and use. 9. Sanctification: The Scriptures teach a life of holiness without which no man shall see the Lord. By the power of the Holy Spirit we are able to obey the
- 11 -
command "Be ye holy, for I am holy". Entire Sanctification is the will of God for all believers.
Sanctification is realized in the believer by
recognizing our individual identification with Christ in His death and resurrection, and by faith reckoning daily upon the fact of that union, and by offering every faculty continually to the dominion of the Holy Spirit. 10. Church and its mission: The church is the body of Christ, and it is the place that God live through the Holy Spirit. It is accredited by God for the church to accomplish the great commission. For every believer who was born in Spirit, they all listed in “the basic member listing of the first born in gathering of the council in heaven. 11. The Ministry: A divinely called and Scriptural ordained ministry has been provided by our Lord for a trifold purpose: (1)
The evangelization of the world.
(2)
Worship God.
(3) The edifying of the body of Christ. It is ordained that those who compose the body of Christ should care for the material needs of
- 12 -
its ministers and evangelists. Only in this way can our ideal of a self-governing, self-supporting and self-propagating church be realized. 12. Divine Healing: Divine healing is an integral part of the gospel. Deliverance from sickness is provided for in the atonement, and is the privilege of all believers. 13. The Blessed Hope: The resurrection of those who have fallen asleep in Christ and their translation together with those who are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord is the eminent and blessed hope of the Church. 14. The Millennial Reign of Jesus Christ: The Lord Jesus Christ will come from Heaven and bring salvation to the national Israel and He will reign on earth for a thousand years. This is the blessed hope promised by Bible and expectation by all the saints. 15. The Final Judgment: There will be a final judgment at which the wicked dead will be raised and judged according to their works. Whosoever is not found written
- 13 -
in the Book of Life, together with the Devil and his angels, the Beast and the False Prophet will be consigned to everlasting punishment in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. 16. The New Heavens and New Earth: We, "according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth wherein dwells righteousness".
