WHY PEOPLE LOVE VINE Ana Martinez-Lozano A lady asks, “What’s your name?’’ Someone answers, “Lebron James.’’ It’s not really Lebron James. It’s a kid who looks like he is about eight years old. He says it five times in a six-second video. This a new video website and app called Vine. Vine was formed in January of 2013. It was created by three men named Rus Yusupov, Dom Hofmann, and Colin Kroll. Ben Andrews, social media manager at The Advertising Agency in Los Angeles, said that making a good Vine can be challenging. “A good vine either displays something interesting visually, tells a quick joke or catches people’s attention so they want to keep watching it,” said Andrews.
Disneyland: HIGHER TICKET PRICES!!! Amy Ma & Rachel Kim In Disneyland, there are new rides like Frozen and ones about many other movies. The new rides for Frozen consist of Olaf ’s Snow Fest, the Frozen-Sing-Along, and the Trading Post gift shop. You can meet Anna and Elsa, and have a family dance party. There are also rumors that a new Star Wars ride is about to come out. According to Disneyland’s website, many changes are happening in Tomorrowland. The employees are making new rides to make their customers happy. According to Michelle, a Tutor at 826LA, she said that the Haunted Museum was a RIP-OFF! However, one BIG problem is that the prices have increased--a single day for an adult is $99 and children, from 3 to 9 years old, are $93! The park-hopper is now $56, and overall, the prices have increased by 140% since the year 2000. In Florida’s Disney World, the price is $105 per child and is $200 per adult. We talked to our 826LA friends Zach King and Michelle Wilker about it. Zach said that he does not like it, and Michelle Wilker said that it makes her sad.
SKI RESORTS IN THE SUMMER Zach King You might think that ski resorts shut down during the summer. You are wrong! You would be surprised just how much is going on there. Whistler, British Columbia, Canada is the home of Whistler-Blackcomb, the biggest ski resort in North America. A former host of the 2010 Olympics, Whistler-Blackcomb is full of international travelers from places like the U.K.,Singapore,and Australia. But what are the town’s 10,400 permanent residents doing during the summer? The town actually sees more visitors in summer than in winter, according to Patricia Westerholm, Manager of Tourism for Whistler. Westerholm says “Whistler gets more than 2.5 Million unique visitors annually, with approximately 1.6 million in summer (May through October) and just over one million unique visitors in winter (November through April).” Weird to think a Ski resort gets more people in the summer than the winter!
In Disneyland history, Walt Disney explained, “Opening day, was a day to remember. Six thousand invitations to the Grand Opening had been mailed. By mid-afternoon, over 28,000 ticket holders were storming the Magic Kingdom. Most of the tickets were counterfeit.” This states how Disneyland was popular when it just opened. Today, fake tickets are still sold on Craigslist and many other internet markets. We hope you enjoy Disneyland.
Vines are not always in one spot. They are all over the world in different languages. In August of 2014 100 million people watched Vines per month so that’s 25 million per week according, to a Techcrunch article. According to Techcrunch, Vine was released close to the date of the incident in the Boston Marathon. When Vine was released many people made videos about the bombing and many people started to make comments on how bad it looked. Some Vines are not meant to be funny. Many people are serious about what they put on Vine.
In this Disneyland survey, 17 people wanted to go to Disneyland, while 3 people did NOT want to go. After telling people about the prices getting higher, 14 still wanted to go, but 4 changed their mind to say “NO!” It’s not a problem for everyone, though. Natalie Sanchez replied, “I have an annual pass!” We asked several people if they think their parents would let them go with the higher prices. Our friend Allie at 826LA, said “Never” for the question, and Michelle said, “Only for special occasions.” Rachael Kim is AWESOME. She is in 4th grade, is 10 years old, and goes to Third Street School. She plays piano and flute. Amy Ma is AWESOMEST OF ALL THE AWESOME. She is also in 4th grade, is 10 years old, and goes to Hancock Park. She plays the violin. Whistler visitors have plenty of activities including Mountain Biking,Golf and sight-seeing. They can also participate in Tough Mudders, festivals and bike races. Westerholm notes that “Whistler also has lots of exciting free concerts like the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.” I am Zach King. I am 9. I go to Citizens Of The World Hollywood Charter School and I am a basketball star. I like Journalism for it’s writing, pics and creativity!
Ana Martinez-Lozano likes soccer and she comes to 826LA because it’s a fun place to hang out, do homework and make new friends. Her new friend is named Ana.

It’s usually a dark thing.”
MOUNTAIN LIONS, GENTLE AND DANGEROUS: BE AWARE FOR THE REPORT! Ally Song and Ellie Yoo Have you heard about the mountain lion near Griffith Park? The mountain lion crawled out of its home in Griffith Park and into Jason and Paula Archinaco’s basement on April 14, 2015. The police helicopters were spinning around for three hours to get the mountain lion’s attention! People tried to hit the mountain lion with tennis balls and bean bags. After it left the basement, a biologist put a radio collar to track it down. With the collar, they saw that the mountain lion preyed on 1 mule deer, 2 coyotes, and 1 racoon. Martha Groves, a reporter, describes, “The scientists who helped figure out the solution to this situation said they hoped all the uproar (excuse the pun) and media attention (including helicopters) would teach
CAN THE CLIPPERS MAKE HISTORY? Garland Church The NBA playoffs is a series of games of the top 8 teams from the west and the east. To beat the other team you must win 4 games out of 7. The Clippers are the underdogs of the game and come from LA. Many people like the Lakers instead of the Clippers. The Lakers have won 16 championship series and the Clippers have 0. In the 2015 playoffs the Clippers beat the Spurs, a veteran team that won last year’s NBA Finals 4-3. Chris Paul had a terrific game-winning shot to beat the Spurs. The Clippers have 7 main players: Chris Paul, J.J Redick, Jamal Crawford, Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan, Matt Barnes, and Austin Rivers. Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan are big men and get rebounds or make amazing dunks. Chris Paul is the main man and does nice passes and can make beautiful plays. Matt Barnes can block shots and can play in a different position. He could also make shots. J.J. Redick can make lots of 3s. Austin Rivers can make good plays overall. The first NBA playoffs was in 1947. The Philadelphia Warriors and the Chicago Stags battled to win the first NBA Championship. The Philadelphia Warriors won 4-1. The Philadelphia Warriors are now known as the Golden State Warriors. Update: the Clippers lost on game 7 113 to 100. Maybe they will make history next year? My name is Garland Church and I’m in the 7th grade and go to Paul Revere Middle School. .
P-22 a lesson.” The California Department of Fish and Wildlife called the mountain lion the P-22. P-22 weighed 120 pounds and was 3 years old. Remote cameras recorded P-22 in early 2012. A poisonous rat poisoned P-22! P-22 seems harmless and doesn’t want to attack anybody, but that’s not true of all mountain lions! Did you know that the last major attack of the mountain lion was in 2007 in Humbolt County? A 70-year old grandpa and his wife were going on a hike and a mountain lion crept behind…BITE!!!! Yowl!! His wife turned around and saw a partly bitten back. Mountain lions can be dangerous and gentle, so be careful!! Ally and Ellie are students from 826LA. They go to Wonderland Ave. Elementary School. Their teachers are Ms. Lamoureaux and Mrs. Epstein. Ally is 9 years old and Ellie is 8 years old. They are in 3rd grade.
MLB OPENING MONTH Andres Mah-Candelaria MLB opening month is an exciting and sad month for baseball fans because they will figure out if their favorite team has gotten better or worse over the months that they have practiced. For instance the New York Mets used to be one of the worst teams and now they are one of the best teams so far this season. Jay Horwitz who is part of the New York Mets said, “We had a lot of faith that we would get a good start this season.” Also the Giants used to be the worst team in the beginning of the season and now they are in 3rd place in that division. The Dodgers, Astros, Yankees, Tigers, Cardinals, and the Mets are in first place for their divisions. The Dodgers and Cardinals are the only teams that made it to the playoffs last year between these six teams and when they played each other the Dodgers lost to the Cardinals. But right now the Dodgers and Cardinals have some of the best stats, which are overall records of
When Jennifer has an idea for a book her resources are libraries, museums, and historical societies. Jennifer’s first book the Tea Rose took ten years to write and a year to get published. There were some days Jennifer thought the book was never going to happen. To be able to publish the book she worked really hard and rewrote the book many times. Her advice to writers is to write, read, and finish what you start. Some things people don’t know about Jennifer is that she loves Johnny Knoxville and wishes she had a pet kangaroo. When Jennifer gets frustrated she wishes she can run a coffee shop or a tea house. Jennifer’s favorite books are Uyllsses by James Joyce, The Quiet American by Grahame Greene, The Stand by Stephen King, and To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Jennifer Donnelly is an amazing author that creates a new perspective in readers’ imagination when you read her books. These Shallow Graves is Jennifer’s upcoming book that will be available October 27, 2015. Stephani Campos, a student at Bancroft Middle School, loves to read. Reading is her way of escaping to another place. Stephani’s favorite authors are Jennifer Donnelly, Kristine Cast, and P.C. Cast. She enjoys to write! 22-9 for the Cardinals and 20-10 for the Dodgers. Some of the most exciting things are that some teams went on long winning streaks. For instance the dodgers went on a 7-game winning streak and the Astros went on a 10-game winning streak. At the beginning of the season the Dodgers’ first baseman Adrian Gonzalez set a record for most home runs because he hit 5 home runs in 2 games, 3 in the first game and 2 in the second game. Also the Orioles had a game where they won 18-7 against Boston. Those are some facts on baseball opening month which can show you how your favorite teams are doing because maybe they used to bad and now they are doing good or maybe they were good but now they are bad. Also this starting month can be exciting or bad for anyone and the best part is there are still several months before the playoffs. Andres Mah-Candelaria is a 5th grade student who goes to Eagle Rock Elementary. He is 10 years old and he likes journalism because he can write and learn about his favorite things at the same time.

THE CIRCUS IS THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH Sofia Mah-Candelaria Do you know anything about the circus? The circus has been losing money because people haven’t been attending. The people haven’t been attending because they heard the animals have been being mistreated. This has been making the people not attend because they feel very sad for the animals. The circus has been entertaining but depressing. The actors in the circus are clowns, acrobats, jugglers, and unicyclists. But there are lots more actors in the circus than this. The animals in the circuses are lions, tigers, bears, and seals. Some of the actors in the circus do gymnastics like on aerial silks; they do lots of amazing tricks. Some of the actors hang on hoolahoops and it looks like they are about to fall. I always think the people are scared the first time they practice. The circus has been around since about 1770. There are lots of different circuses in the world. There are different circuses in Los Angeles. Sofia Mah-Candelaria is 9 years old. The school she goes to is Eagle Rock Elementary School. PARCHEESI: THE FANTASTIC GAME OF EMPERORS Chloe Kim Do you know Parcheesi? Some people don’t. It’s okay because parcheesi is an old game of emperors. Parcheesi was made in India. It first came to America in between 1867 and 1870. Parcheesi is a younger game than the game Chaupar. Only 2 people can play. This what the tutors and students at 826LA say: DISLIKES Carolyn: It takes hours to end.
Joon: Not a lot of people know it. LIKES Cat: Only played with 2 players. Carolyn: It is fun.
Not a lot of people know parcheesi. Look at chart below:

DESTINATION ADAPTATION Natalie Sanchez You are excited because you just found that your favorite book is going to be turned into a movie. You scream with excitement, you are going to tell your club / friends that your guys’ favorite book is going to come out. Isn’t that a great feeling, the feeling that you just read a book and you will see it come alive on the big screen? That feeling that your idea of the characters in your mind comes out the same as the director, or it completely not comes out like you imagine. Books like Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Twilight, The Lord of the Rings, Gone Girl, Fault in Our Stars and Percy Jackson are examples of books turned into movies. Book and movies get different amounts of money. Or how many people watch a movie or how many people will got the book/ read the book. You can decide if you want to read the book and not watch the movie, you can read the book and then watch the movie, or you can just watch the movie and completely ignore the book. More than 28 million copies of The Hunger Games, 19 million copies of Catching Fire, and 18 million copies of Mockingjay were sold. Wow! And that was only the book. The Hunger Games, the blockbuster adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel, dominated the competition at the box office, opening to a staggering $155 million (according to early estimates posted on Box Office Mojo). That is one example of how many books got sold and how much money was made from the movie. This reporter has a favorite book that is going to be turned into a movie. That book is called Paper Towns. It will come out on July 24, 2015. Super excited! The book’s author, John Green, answered anonymous questions about the movie on Tumblr. Here are some: Good Times: Will you be appearing in Paper Towns? John Green: Yes, I have a cameo in Paper Towns. Don’t know if it’ll be in the final movie, but it was in the most recent version I saw. GT: Did you take anything from the set? JG: YES. I took: 1. Ben’s beer sword. 2. The copy of Harry Potter and the Goblet. of Fire in Q’s bedroom. 3. Margo’s crosshatched notebook. GT: Does Angela go on the trip to find Margo in the Paper Towns film? It looked like it from the trailer? She didn’t in the book right or did I read like quarter of the book missing her out? JG: She does in the movie! She does not in the book! I think the movie is better for her going. (Both Radar and Angela are bigger characters in the movie than in the book.) There are a lot of little differences like that
Q: Why does the dog bark at me everytime I walk by his fence? A: He thinks you’re the kid that used a super soaker on him. Q: What would be the best sandwich? A: Everything.
between the movie version of Paper Towns and the book, because the movie is a movie and the book is a book. The only things I think will REALLY bother people are: 1. There is no Sea World in the book. What happens at Sea World in the book happens at the SunTrust Tower in the movie. The reason for this should be obvious, but: No one involved in the movie wanted to give Sea World positive impressions, or potentially pay them for the right to use their name and trademarks. 2. There are substantially fewer chapters analyzing Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself.” Actually I don’t think this will really bother people, come to think of it. GT: Will the movie actually show that black Santa collection? JG: Oh my, yes. Books turned into movies are very exciting. They bring the characters that you read to life. They make the reading experience more awesome. So if you have a favorite book, hope it turns into a movie and hope the movie is as good as the book. Natalie Sanchez is 13 years old. She goes to Thomas Starr King Middle School. She is in the 7th grade. Her favorite book is Paper Towns and is excited to see the movie. She loves journalism because she meets new friends and gets to write. She enjoys to write!

people just look at the screen and are entertained. At a play the actors and actresses perform differently depending on the audience’s reactions.
What do people prefer, movies or plays? Movies get turned into plays and plays into movies. For example, Cinderella has been turned into both a play and a movie. The play was the original by Rodgers and Hammerstein, which played at the Ahmanson Theatre. The play was very creatively put together, with “magic” and humor. This play was nothing like any Cinderella ever seen, it wasn’t the original having the prince look for the girl that fits the shoe kind. “This Rodgers and Hammerstein’s combines the story’s classical elements—glass slippers, pumpkin and a beautiful ball with some surprising twists,” according to the L.A.’s Theatre Company Press.
Some things are easier when creating a movie than a play, some things are harder. “Both are challenging, movies have more props and so more money is needed,” said Jared. “A play is live so more practice is needed. Acting is harder because there is a live audience.” The actors and actresses need to practice because they need to be perfect. It can’t be done over. Not only does practice take hours but so does preparing the stage. “Making and setting up the stage can take three to four months depending on the play,” said Jared. The worst deal with movies is the amount of money they need in order to be done. “Movies require more people and more money,” mentioned Jared.
FROM SCREEN TO STAGE, FROM STAGE TO SCREEN
Movies and plays have many differences. “The biggest difference of plays and movies is the live aspect,” according to Jared Clark, a tutor at 826LA who has performed on stage in high school and makes no-budget films. In a play, there can be no mistakes because it can’t be done again, can’t be fast forwarded or paused. Whatever the actor or actress does, that’s what the audience sees. Another difference is presence of a live orchestra in most plays. The music is played live below the stage. The audience is more into what’s happening while watching a play. At a movie theatre,
Jared was asked if he would rather work at the theatre or at the movies; “I would rather work in the movie business because it is more glamorous and there is more money. More people see what you make.”
MUSIC MATTERS
After taking a short survey from other “The Good Times” writers, most people say their favorite songs are “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars and “Sugar” by Maroon 5. Instead of analyzing the tempo or melody, I looked at the lyrics and themes of the music. I asked a friend from my school that immigrated to America about their views on these songs.
Jereme Lua Normally, in meeting a new person at a party people try to find out the interests of the other party. Whenever I meet a new person they always ask me, “What kind of music do you like?” The type of music people listen to can affect how they speak or act. What if that’s in a larger scale, like a country instead of single person? Today’s popular music should have an effect on how immigrants see the United States. Since America is known for its immigration, it is important to know how our important media sources, like music affect how the outside world sees the country itself.
Kaylin Lopez is a happy journalist at 826LA and has learned a lot. She knows what she does because she has learned from the best. Kaylin enjoys learning a lot but wants to become a veterinarian. She is an eighth grader at Bancroft Middle School.
Angel, a sophomore, is an immigrant from the Philippines that came here in 2010. I asked her about the song Uptown Funk, and her response was, “I see a guy who justs likes to have fun and show off to girls… He has all the money and time.” People who are planning to come to the States might see men as a group of people who just high roll with girls all the time, and clearly that isn’t true. I also asked her about
The entire summary is still unknown, but this reporter gathered a few clues to try to uncover the whole story. According to WimpyKid.com, Greg, the main character, faces a challenge he could’ve never imagined. (But what challenge?) Jeff Kinney also left a hint with this response: “Let’s say it has to do with living up to his father’s expectations.” The cover was also revealed. The cover is black, (each cover of Diary of a Wimpy Kid always has a certain color for each title) and the title is Old School. The term “Old School” refers to the 1980s when boomboxes (a gigantic radio that is louder than other radios), cassette tapes (what people had before CDs and walkmans, a portable radio), rapping (a song that includes rhymes, but it is not a nursery), breakdancing (a dance that includes doing stunts and tricks on the floor), and graffiti (a giant mural on someone’s property that is drawn by a spray can) were the crown jewels of the 20th century. The cover of the tenth book has a picture of Greg with a huge boombox and and a cassette tape with strips all over the floor. So this book might center around the 1980s. Jeff Kinney’s writing process is a busy one. He first starts with writing 350 jokes. Then, he writes his story. It takes eight drafts for him to perfect his plot. Then he does the illustrations. Unlike other illustrators, Jeff doesn’t use pencil and paper. He uses a digital easel to draw the pictures for his book. Finally, he sends his draft to the publishing company. While the publisher and the editors take a look at the draft, Jeff Kinney takes a break and does whatever he wants to do. the song, “Sugar” by Maroon 5. She said, “At first He sounds like he loves the girl really much… but it sounds possessive as well. It kinda sounds like the girl is only for him and him only.” This song makes it seem like that men are possessive, and might drive away people from the country. Music is an important media outsource for the youth today, and may represent what the population is as a whole. As a youth writer it is of utmost importance to address these issues as a consumer, and bring them to light. Jereme is a freshmen in high school that likes to write in the 3rd person. He is on his school’s debate team and enjoys studying military history.

COMICS: THE LITTLE BIG SEAL Gem Galicinao Comic books were introduced to young kids and teens during the 1930s, and they are still popular today. Just look at The Avengers. They now have 2 movies and loads of comic books. But something is different about the comic books we have to today than the ones in the past. They’re missing the Comics Code Authority’s Seal of Approval. The seal was designed to look like a stamp that bore the words “Approved by the Comics Code Authority,” and it was only changed twice. The famous seal and the code was created because comic books were linked to juvenile delinquency, so the comic book industries decided to self-regulate their books before the government censored them, according to the University Press of Mississippi.
MOVIE THEATER EXPERIENCE Monica Lee Who doesn’t enjoy movies? The smell of buttery popcorn, hot dogs, jalapenos, and the velvet seats that many sit on for hours. The movie is a place for entertainment, action, and of course fun. Although the movie itself is exciting, the experience of the movie makes up that excitement. There are many different types of movie style, such as IMAX, 3D, and the newest 4DX. All of these types of movie style experiences are different, but they all make watching the movie enjoyable and alive. If you are a person who enjoys watching shows on a huge screen with loud sounds surrounding you, then the IMAX experience is the perfect fit for you. You may wonder, what is the imax experience? Well, IMAX is basically like a regular movie theater, but the screen does not have a frame and it is bigger, wider and some may even say better. The image that it produces is ten times larger than a regular movie screen. Not only is the screen gigantic, but the sound is louder. The price of an movie ticket is around $8 to $10, but the price of an IMAX ticket is from $13 to $15. This is because the IMAX experience has gotten popular and so the prices went up. Back in the day, 3D was red and green paper glasses. Now at movie theaters the 3D glasses became classier, and they stay on your face. 3D is where you wear these cool glasses, and you see things coming at you. How does this work? Well the movie screen can’t form three

Do you know Pewdiepie? The famous Youtuber who has 36 million subscribers on Youtube and makes the same amount of money as Hollywood celebrities? The person who got in trouble for making jokes? Also known as the person who dropped out of a Harvard like school to sell hotdogs and play video games? Well probably not if you answered no to most of these questions. Pewdiepie, also known as Felix Kjellberg, owns the most subscribed channel on Youtube in the world. He dropped out of a prestigious school to sell hotdogs and play video games and he is happy he made that decision. While playing video games, he earns money for commenting on video games and basically Felix’s job is to play games for a living! dimensional objects, but it can present two different images at the same time. Your brain would do the rest of the work. It would merge the two images to make one image that looks three dimensional. Basically you are watching two films that are positioned in different angles. IMAX 3D movie tickets are around $15 to $20, depending on the theater you go to. The 4DX experience was created by the South Korean company Cj4DPlex. What is 4DX? 4DX is a type of movie technology that works by including all of a human’s five senses, while they are watching a movie. The seats moves and shakes, giving you the ride of your life. The seats also blows air at you and sprays water. The theater also fills up with different types of smells the character in the movie might smell. It is as if you are a part of the movie. Now instead of mindlessly eating popcorn while blankly staring at a screen, you can experience it for around $30. All of these different types of movie experience are amazing and will make your movie days better. Although the prices of the movie ticket is expensive and you might as well buy the DVD, watching the movie in a whole different way is why children and adults spend their money watching a screen for hours. As long as people are alive, movies will always be changing. Monica Lee is 13 years old, who attends Eagle Rock Jr./Sr. High School. playing games he revealed that he made about 4 million dollars in the year alone. This comes from when subscribers watch his videos. Although Pewdiepie is so well known, many people still don’t know what he does or even who he is! I surveyed 22 people and 6 out of the 22 had never heard about him until now! Even if some people don’t know him, Felix has enough money and subscribers to make his own country! Heck he could fund a project to make people go to Mars! Although he can help with advancements with going to Mars, he spends a lot of money on charities and helping fight diseases. He is like the Bill Gates of the internet! They both use a ton of money on charity and they both are famous and rich! Anyways, Felix is a mastermind in making people laugh and starting internet trends. Its downfall started in 2001 when Marvel, one of the “Big 3” comic industries, struck a major blow to the viability of the CMAA’s seal after it withdrew from the C.C.A. because of their comic “X-Force” being denied approval, according to Newsarama and The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. Soon after the other 2 big comic companies, Archie and D.C., decided to withdraw from the C.C.A. Other reasons why the seal failed at staying alive because advertisers stopped caring about it said Steve Rotterdam, ex-Senior Vice President at D.C. Comics, told Newsarama. Also, another reason is that comic books aren’t being sold at grocery and convenience stores said Tim Sokolowski, Chief Operating Officer at Marvel Comics.

He was in the passenger seat when his friend lost control and crashed into a tree. In honor of his co-star, Vin Diesel named his new baby daughter Pauline. In order to finish the movie, Walker’s brothers had to join the movie to be their dead brother’s character. In honor of Paul’s name, Wiz Khalifa made a song, “ See You Again.” Vin Diesel also stated, “When the tragedy happened, I lost my best friend. I lost my brother.” Paul Walker’s death shocked many of his fans, family, and friends. The movie series Fast and Furious may continue without him. Some say they might use his brother, Cody Walker. Paul Walker left a legacy never to be forgotten by his fans.

WHY IS TAYLOR SWIFT STILL FAMOUS? Allie Kim
Taylor Swift is a very talented and famous celebrity. People like Taylor Swift very much in many ways. People like her music, two cats, look, and many more. The first person that I interviewed was Dr. Craig. He said that the reasons why he likes Taylor Swift is that her music is, “catchy and upbeat, sometimes clever, and always motivates me to finish my workouts.” The second person I interviewed was Dr. Thompson. He said that her singing might have changed her career. He said that one of the best things about Taylor Swift’s early work was how well it evoked the experience of teenage life. Hello my name is Allie Kim. I am 8 years old and in 3rd grade and I go to Third Street School. My favorite subject at school is art. I like to be a tomboy. I like the color green. I wrote the article about Taylor Swift.
THE SLANG CULTURE Ana Sotomayor Slang is a creative second language for adolescents and hip adults that is made by subcultures in society. Slang is complex, contagious, and trendy. Slang impacts the thinking, emotions, and actions of the people of our ‘hella fresh’ nation. Some groups that create slang include teenagers, sports teams, and famous musicians. Another key factor in the spread of slang terms is the fast-moving, highly sociable Internet, which helps to fuel the explosive awareness of slang terms today. The University of Northern California states, “Slang has no societal boundaries or limitations as it can exist in all cultures and classes of society as well as in all languages.” “It typically comes from youth and other groups “on the margins” with respect to established institutions of power (which doesn’t mean that slang isn’t used for effect in the mainstream),” said Dr. Anne Curzan, English professor at the University of Michigan,
THE VOICE IS CLOSE TO THE FINALE OF THE 8th SEASON Dylan Hong The Voice is a popular televised singing competition on NBC that I like because it is suspenseful with live performances and is sometimes funny too. A lot of people are getting excited for the finale on May, 19th from 9pm-11pm. The Voice is in it’s 8th season. The Voice’s judges for this season are Blake Shelton, Adam Levine, Pharrel Williams, and Xtina Aguilera. The Voice is different from other talent shows because of the blind auditions where the judges first pick the artists that will enter the competition without seeing them, battle rounds where the coaches pick two artists that will compete by singing a duet, knockouts, and live shows where all the artists sing and the audience at home votes. After voting, when there are three left they all sing a song, and the audience votes again to decide who stays. According to Murtz Jaffer, the Canadian reality TV journalist, even when things get hard coaches and contestants support each other. “While there has been recent speculation about some in-fighting between the judges themselves, the concept of The Voice mandates for a teacher/pupil relationship between the artist and their coach. As a result, everyone involved knows what
“Slang can establish solidarity in a group and it can critique established authority. As we all know, slang can make us laugh, and it can surprise us; sometimes it can be mean, and sometimes it can help us break the ice, make a friend, create a community.” Modern slang terms that remain hip are: bae, fresh, savage, and bomb. If you ever need help on the language of slang, you can look up Urban Dictionary which will give you countless terms or you can consult a technologically mesmerized teenager near you. Finally, slang terms are used a lot on Twitter, Instagram, and other social networks so you can browse through there and absorb this dynamic spectrum. “Slang is often fairly short-lived, which makes sense. For slang to be surprising and challenging, it helps to be new, playing with the language in original ways,” stated Curzan. “But there are exceptions, like the word ‘cool’, which has been slang for about one hundred years.” The website Fluent U shares the slang that new English learners might not know such as ‘crushing’ on someone, ‘dumping someone’, to be ‘hooked’ on
they have signed up for.” Murtz also told me about how the voice is taped. “The Voice tapes from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. PST so that it can air live on the East Coast at 8 p.m. EST. “ When there is a commercial on T.V., “the show’s crew sets-up the stage for the next segment. This is typically a performance by one of the artists or a special guest performance by an invited guest. Depending on who the guest is, the stage set-up can vary. Additionally, the coaches use this time to take a break and get their make-up reapplied.” As of print time, Team Xtina is completely out of artists, who have all been eliminated. The most promising artists still in the running are Megan Linsey, Koryn
something, to ‘dunno’, to be a ‘geek’, and to have an ‘ex’. HowStuffWorks.com displays some terms that you might’ve not known had started off as slang terms are: ‘boo-boo’ (1950’s), ‘workaholic’ (1970’s), and ‘my bad’ (1980’s). This strange linguistic creation is one of many teenage rebellion techniques that add space between teenagers and their parents’ generation. Thousands of teenagers give in to its great power to speak the temporary and ever-changing language with their friends. Some teens love it, some hate it, and some even say it unconsciously. Nevertheless, it influences our society. Slang terms are human creations that never end. I guess you can say slang terms are ‘the cat’s pajamas’ (1920’s). Hawthorne, and Sawyer Fredericks. According to Murtz, it’s not just the artist finalist who will be decided tomorrow. Usually the producers have their picks for “judges in place by the end of the airing season so that they can promote the new season with its new coaches during the finale.” Good luck to the contestants for the season, and I hope one of you wins!
