The “Mirror-Clad” House

Academic Project K. Avgetidou, M.Stergiou K. Oudatzi Aristotle Univesity of Thessaloniki 2015- 2016

The project’s aim was to design a 120sqm, two-floor house on a square -shaped 20x20m. plot. The first phase of the project was to analize an existing house, in wish case we analised the House is Buzen by Suppose Design Office. Through the analysis, the elements that emerged, contributed to the creation of the concept for our own project. The main element that drew our attention in House is Buzen was the concept of creating house in which the exterior enters the interior. Specifically, the corridors of the house are transformed into the outdoor space -the streets that devide nad connect the various houses of a neighborhood, giving the impression of a “neighborhood” between the rooms of the house. That concept of indoor and outdoor spaces blending together, with no distinct boundaries is the element that we used to create out own project.

The basic design principle for our residence was the alternation of the blank and compact surfaces as well as the illusions of their combination creates. In order to make this even more visible, we used metal panel with intense reflective property on the outer surface of the day house. Consequently, in the morning hours, the windows due to their dark colored glass look like complete surfaces and rest house reflected in the environment, while in the night hours the windows are the transparent surfaces and rest of residence a solid volume.

Collective Housing

Type: Academic Project Collaborators: K. Avgetidou, M.Stergiou, K.Kappaka Supervisors: A.Alexopoulou, F.Vavili, S. Vizoviti, K.Ioanniidis, M.Tratsela Host: Aristotle Univesity of Thessaloniki Year: 2016 The aim of the project is to design an “intermediate” living condition - an emerging type of collective housing that is neither identical to the space of the traditional home nor to the stereotype of a inhospitable “apartment building” or “working space residence”. The main design principle is the creation of a collective housing complex with a series of shared areas that will intensify the communination of its inhabitants. Inspired by the natural beehive, the hexagon was concidered as the perfect component for commune living. The hexagon cells, stacked together in groups efficinetly and according to structural properties, can create an interesting and functional floor plan. Although, in the deisgn process we tried to remove the hexagon feeling from inside the building and the floor plan while at the same time trying to take advantage of its ability to produce spaces and self-complete.

The residential complex is intended for 40 people. More specifically it is for 7 couples, 6 families and there are also 6 studios intended for one person. The apartments are located on the second, third and fourth floor. The commune areas are located on the ground floor. The corridor that connects the appartments is placed closed to the main facade of the builingd in oredr to isolate the apartments from the noise and give better ventilation.

House Renovation in Thessaloniki

Type: Collaborators: Supervisors: Host: Year:

Academic Project K. Avgetidou, M.Stergiou A.Kalfopoulos, D.Fragos Aristotle Univesity of Thessaloniki 2017

This project concerns the renovation of an apartment in the center of Thessaloniki. More specifically, we were asked to look for real users and a real apartment that needs renovation. The aim of the project was to design in real conditions taking into account the requirements and wishes of an existing client and not to design solely on the basis of the wishes of the architect who designs it.

Therefore, the 2-bedroom apartment that was chosen to be designed is located in the first floor of an apartment building of the 70s in the center of Thessaloniki, where a young couple lives.

CoWorking Offices

Academic Project S. Papadimitriou Aristotle Univesity of Thessaloniki 2019

The objective of this project is the elaboration of a hybrid building in the center of the city of Thessaloniki, together with the parallel exploration of the possibilities of representational and digital media, and in particular the role of model in architectural design. Through a series of interrelated exercises and diagrammatic techniques we designed a series of “dense surfaces, dynamic models and new structures with spatial characteristics and qualities which we then used to produced hybrid spaces. The particular building on which we are called to intervene is located on one of the most commercial streets in the center of Thessaloniki, Tsimiski Street. It is a fairly densely populated area, with intense commercial activity on the ground floor, while on the higher floors we find numerous office spaces, but most of them are unoccupied. In recent years, a new way of working has been created, which

breaks away from the classic model of the closed office space, developing a more collaborative form of work. Therefore, the goal of the project is to create such a co-working space, which provides the modern employee with a work space that meets his needs. The goal was creating a workplace that departs from existing standards and the constraints they impose. In order to respond to the developments and demands of the working countries of recent years, the aim was to create an office building that will be able to change according to the needs of employees. Therefore we create a mechanism, which we place on both sides of the existing building, from which arise the spaces that will accommodate the different uses of an office building, however it will be possible to change and adapt each time based on the wishes and needs. employees.

Restoration of Polygnotou urban stream

Type: Academic Project Supervisors: E.Athanasiadou, A.Vitopoulou, G.Gementzi, D.Zavraka, M.Tratsela, E.Gavriilidou, E.Griba, G.Mouratidou Host: Aristotle Univesity of Thessaloniki Year: 2020

The project aims to form the urban area of the Polygnotou stream, in the section between the ring road and Lambraki street, in Thessaloniki. Today, these places, in immediate natural continuity but disconnected from each other, form an unformed and degraded environment. They have only negatively accepted the consequences of reconstruction and elementary infrastructure or partial configuration projects such as: rubble to regulate the entrance level of apartment buildings, terrain change for the creation of plateaus or for illegal reconstruction, encroachment of a large part of the banks mainly on the west side creating slopes with violent fumes and severe erosion problems, cover of springs, destruction of vegetation and the natural environment of the stream.

The design idea was based on the existing layouts and flows of the area, both natural and man-made. Through the merging and unification of these flows, the goal of the design is the unification of the natural and the urban landscape, thus creating new flows adapted to the terrain and always with respect to its natural character. Thus, levels and paths are formed that will receive uses of entertainment, relaxation and leisure for all ages and with access to all. (seniors, children, disabled)

The use of the car on the adjacent roads is limited, with the conversion of the local roads to light traffic roads, while the traffic of pedestrians and bicycles is enhanced.
