JOIN US FOR AN INSPIRED CURRICULUM Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory has a forty-four year history of training artists and small classes taught by devoted, committed teachers. Our instructors are dedicated to expanding each student’s abilities whether in a beginning class or the three-year curriculum. Thousands of actors have gone on to important theatre and film careers. Lifelong bonds are formed in rigorous classes as students pursue their individual goals. The Conservatory’s founder, Joy Zinoman, leads the school onward as part of Studio Theatre, one of the nation’s capitol‘s premier contemporary theatres. The 20-member faculty teaches over 500 students per year. In the heart of Logan Circle, excellent facilities and free rehearsal space are provided for actors in Studio’s four-theatre complex.

Instructors: Bannon, Garner, Yglesias Silver Develop and sharpen self-awareness, observation, creative imagination, improvisational skills, and the articulate use of the body and voice. Build and heighten responsiveness to action. Work on a monologue. No prerequisite: Call for placement

BEGINNING CLASS

PRINCIPLES OF REALISM

Instructors: Arthur, Debelack, Nichols, Paris, Burke Pitt, Wells Develop a process using stimulus-response, motivation, characterization, interplay, text, and subtext. Includes pantomime, improvisation, and scene work on a character from a realistic play. Pair with Movement 1. No prerequisite: Call for placement

Instructors: Riley, Yglesias Silver Identify, relax, and warm up parts of the body that hold tension. Develop free movement and expressiveness. Work on posture, gesture, walking, and expanding physical potential. Pair with Principles of Realism. No Prerequisite

VOICE 1

Instructors: Campion, Diggs Provides basic techniques for vocal preparation and performance. Develop projection, vocal quality, range, energy, and expressiveness through relaxation exercises and basic physical work. Pair with Character and Emotion. No Prerequisite

Instructor: Campion Provides tools and strategies for speakers with regional dialects or foreign accents. Learn basic and advanced tools for accent modification and dialect acquisition including articulation warm-ups, speech anatomy, and the International Phonetic Alphabet. Apply to text using the General American Dialect. No Prerequisite

IMPROVISATION FOR THE ACTOR

Instructors: Garner, Yglesias Silver Encourage response to stimuli with honesty, spontaneity, and creativity. Focus on sustained and relaxed awareness, resulting in more dynamic play and interactions. No Prerequisite

CHARACTER AND EMOTION

Instructors: Arthur, Paris, Seiden Further develop skills in characterization, realistic playing, and emotional connection. Pair with Voice 1. Prerequisite: Recommendation of the faculty after successful completion of Principles of Realism.

STANDARD STAGE SPEECH

SHAKESPEARE 1

CLASSICAL VOICE AND MOVEMENT

Instructors: Burke Pitt, Seiden, Zinoman Learn classical acting techniques, focusing on vocal and physical clarity, textual interpretation, vocal-emotional connections, diction, and the use of imagery and tone color, utilizing soliloquies, and scene study. Pair with Classical Voice and Movement. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Character and Emotion

GREEK TRAGEDY

Team-taught by Diggs and Yglesias Silver Vocal production and movement improvisation designed to expand vocal and physical potential. Develop clarity in classical material with projection, range, and energy as focal points. Recommended in conjunction with Shakespeare 1. Prerequisite: Voice 1 and Movement 1

ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE

Instructors: Debelack, Zinoman Explore choruses, monologues, and scenes from the work of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. Emphasis is on oral interpretation and physical control to deepen emotional connection while working in an ensemble. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Shakespeare 1

Instructor: Bradley Identify and replace unwanted habits with greater body awareness, poise, and ease of movement. Explore the Alexander Technique to allow for more variety in movement and expression. No Prerequisite

SINGER’S PROCESS

Instructor: Hamlin Basics of singing with an emphasis on freeing the body; expanding the breath capacity and creating sound; learning to sing on pitch; exploring and understanding lyrics, rhythm, and emotion of a song; and singing with a piano. No Prerequisite

VOICE 2

Instructor: Diggs Intensive study of the vocal instrument for those who have already acquired basic vocal skills. Stimulates emotional, physical, and vocal range in order to creatively illuminate the text. Modern and classical monologues are explored. Prerequisite: Voice 1 or permission of the instructor

CORE ACTING CLASSES COMEDY

Instructor: Paris An advanced class in comedic technique and style. Scene work in four periods: Commedia dell’arte to Shakespeare, Restoration, Comedy of Wit and Manners, and Modern Comedy. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Shakespeare 1 and Greek Tragedy

SHAW, IBSEN, CHEKHOV

Instructor: Zinoman An advanced scene study class focusing on multidimensional characters. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Comedy or permission of instructor

SHAKESPEARE 2

Instructor: Zinoman An advanced course which deepens the actor’s experience in classical style. Includes rigorous work in the preparation of monologues and scenes. Special emphasis is on the interpretation of text and vocal intensity. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Shakespeare 1 and Comedy or permission of instructor

Instructor: Zinoman An advanced scene study class exploring the styles of the modernist masters. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Comedy or permission of instructor

DIRECTING

Instructor: Zinoman For actors, directors, playwrights, and filmmakers. Focus on script analysis and preparation, blocking and movement, business, uses of improvisation and working with actors, rhythm and tempo, theatrical organization, and integration of all aspects of technical theatre. Format consists of lecture and scene presentation. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor *  Applications are always being accepted for our top-ranked bi-annual directing class.

DIALECTS

Instructor: Campion Introduces actors to the fundamentals of mastering any accent or dialect. Build listening and imitation skills in the acquisition of up to four dialects for the stage. Utilizes articulation warm-ups, online dialect resources, and basic phonetics to perform authentically and intelligibly in dialect. For beginners and advanced students. No Prerequisite

AUDITIONING

Instructors: Debelack, Seiden, Burke Pitt Prepare to audition with modern and classical pieces in comic and serious modes. Build a repertoire of audition material with attention to individual selection and professional presentation. Develop cold–reading skills, receive help with headshots and resumes, and gain working knowledge of the business of acting. No Prerequisite

MUSICAL THEATRE

Instructor: Hamlin Enhance your ability to create unique song interpretations, find your character’s arc throughout the song, and explore realistic performance techniques to create bold and vibrant characters. Students will find their true singing voice, reduce singing anxiety, and combine singing and acting skills to choose and prepare repertory. For singers with some experience. No Prerequisite

Modeled after our rigorous adult training program. One-half of the class places are offered with full scholarship to students with demonstrated need.

FALL/SPRING ENSEMBLE

SUMMER INTENSIVE

Twelve three-hour classes nurture creativity, develop vocal and physical skills, and enhance young actors’ ability to perform and work together as part of the ensemble. Class includes theatre games, pantomimes, improvisations, monologues, and scene study from both contemporary and classical literature. The program culminates in a final showing of the work.

Three weeks of full-day sessions pair the activities and skill-building exercises from Fall/ Spring Ensemble with morning classes specifically focusing on movement, voice, and musical theatre. Afternoon acting training includes monologues and scene study from both contemporary and classical literature and ensemble work.

Workshops are a way to explore new skills. Held throughout the year, weekend workshops offer specialized areas of study in small individualized classes. SINGER’S PROCESS

Instructor: Hamlin Techniques to relax the body and expand the breath, explore the process of making sound, singing on pitch, discovering and releasing the emotion of a song, and learning to sing with a piano.

MASK WORKSHOP

Instructor: Day Increase physical focus, specificity, and playfulness. Develop clarity in storytelling and increased physical presence. Make bold, clear choices, by linking technique and impulse using traditional full-face and non-traditional masks.

STAGE COMBAT

Instructor: Hunter Use hand-to-hand combat to portray the illusion of fighting. Using basic weapons, emphasis is on enhancing physical skill and confidence with a safe and realistic technique.

AUDITIONING

Instructor: Debelack Feedback and coaching on both monologue and cold-reading skills. Emphasis on prepared sides. Professional review of headshots and resumes.

ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE

Instructor: Bradley Learn to recognize and relinquish unwanted patterns of thought, movement, and behavior to become more creative, spontaneous, and expressive. An introduction to the technique.

MUSICAL THEATRE

Instructor: Hamlin Meld the worlds of music and theatre. Examine and explore the acting and singing of a song. Emphasis on singing and performance techniques as well as relaxing and opening the voice.

FACULTY —

HIGHLY TRAINED PROFESSIONALS JOY ZINOMAN (Director of Curriculum and Teacher Training) is a master teacher and the founder of both Studio Theatre and the Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory. She has been teaching and directing for over 40 years in the US and abroad, and created the Conservatory’s core acting curriculum. Before retiring from Studio Theatre, she directed 70 productions and garnered over 225 Helen Hayes award nominations for the Theatre, and she received numerous awards including Outstanding Direction and Visionary Leadership in the Arts. Recently she directed the acclaimed Blood Knot at Mosaic Theatre. Training: Northwestern University, Radcliffe College, American University. CAROL ARTHUR has performed locally at Studio Theatre, The Shakespeare Theatre Company, Studio 2ndStage, The Source Theatre, Longacre Lea Productions, Adventure Theatre, and Atlas Performing Arts Center. She plays steel pan as a member of the DC area band Little Red & The Renegades. Training: Oberlin College, Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory.

NANCY BANNON is a performer, writer, director and teacher. Upcoming acting work includes the Off Broadway run of Occupied Territories, which she also co-wrote. Nancy was on the faculty at SUNY Purchase and Rutgers University and taught extensively at The Juilliard School, NYU, and various universities. She has written and directed four short films and currently has an original feature film in development. Her recent theatre work as writer/director includes: Cornfield, Puncture, The Pod Project; and as movement director, Romeo and Juliet on Broadway and Murder Ballad and Pas de Deux for Studio Theatre. DIANA BRADLEY has been a certified Alexander Technique teacher since 1979. Diana has taught in the DC area for over 30 years, including at Arena Stage, the University of Maryland, and the Baltimore School for the Arts. Diana teaches around the US and internationally. 24 ZACH CAMPION is a certified Assistant Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework® and draws upon the Knight-Thompson Speechwork methodology for dialect and accent modification practice. Zach recently coached dialects for Vietgone, The Remains, Between Riverside and Crazy, Chimerica, and Terminus (2nd Stage) at Studio. Training: BFA, Performance and Production, Texas State University-San Marcos; MFA, Voice and Speech Pedagogy, Virginia Commonwealth University. JACQUELINE CHENAULT is a DC-area actor and performer. She has worked with many DC theatres, including Studio Theatre, the Folger Theatre, the Folger Consort, Arts on the Horizon, Brave Spirits, the Baltimore Shakespeare Factory, 4615 Theatre Company, and numerous projects with the Capital Fringe Festival. Training: The George Washington University, Tooth & Claw Combat Arts, British American Dramatic Academy, Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory. ELENA DAY is most well-known as the creator of Cirque du Soleil’s signature character, The Green Bird. Her work as a director, coach, and consultant has taken her around the world, and given her the opportunity to work in clowning, circus, street arts, and traditional theatre. Her background is in Lecoq-based physical theater, improvisation, modern dance, and yoga. KATE DEBELACK has been seen in productions at Studio Theatre and Studio 2ndStage, and has performed with other DC theatres including The Shakespeare Theatre Company, Forum Theatre, Solas Nua, Taffety Punk, Longacre Lea, and MetroStage, and was a company member with Cherry Red Productions. Regional credits include the New York International Fringe Festival and Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre. Training: Western Washington University, the Cabaret Conference at Yale, Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory.

DENISE DIGGS has taught voice for over 30 years at the Baltimore School for the Arts. She has also taught at Towson University, Duke Ellington School of the Arts, and privately for media professionals. She has appeared at Arena Stage, Studio Theatre, Center Stage, Olney Theatre Center, La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, Round House Theatre, Theatre of the First Amendment, and Everyman Theatre. JULIE GARNER has performed with Studio Theatre, Forum Theatre, Constellation Theatre, Faction of Fools, Imagination Stage, Rorschach Theatre, Molotov Theatre, and Lean & Hungry Theatre. She has traveled with Cirque Voila! and the KimTom International Clown Festival and has many film and commercial credits. She currently works as an actor and theatre program developer at the Smithsonian NMAH. Julie has been teaching Improvisation and Theatre Arts since 1999. Training: University of Maryland, Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory. JEFF HAMLIN is an accomplished musician and music director. Since earning his Bachelor of Music degree, he has worked as a producer, writer, arranger, and musician, primarily in Nashville and the DC metro area. As a past member of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington (GMCW), Jeff has performed as a soloist in many cabaret shows. More recently, he has served as the music director and pianist for performances by the D.C. Cabaret Network, Maggie’s Cabaret, and local artists. Training: Southwest Baptist University, Georgetown University Law Center, and Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory. ROBB HUNTER is a Certified Fight Director with the Society of American Fight Directors for whom he is also a Certified Teacher. As a professional fight director he has choreographed for many local theatres including The Shakespeare Theatre Company, Arena Stage, Woolly Mammoth, Center Stage, Washington National Opera, Olney Theatre Center, The Baltimore Shakespeare Festival, Rep Stage, Fords Theatre, and of course, Studio Theatre. Robb is Choreographer in Residence at American University and also teaches at Catholic University and McDaniel College. He holds an MFA in Theatre Pedagogy from Virginia Commonwealth University.


PEG NICHOLS has appeared in productions at The Shakespeare Theatre Company, Kennedy Center, Source Festival, Annapolis Shakespeare Company, 4615 Theatre Company, Strand Theater, and others, and has understudied in four Studio Theatre productions. Film credits include a variety of television programs, industrials, and broadcast news appearances as an advocate for individuals with disabilities. Training: Central Michigan University, Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory. NANCY PARIS has been associated with the Acting Conservatory since its founding 44 years ago. As a veteran DC actress, she has performed at Arena Stage, Georgetown Shakespeare Theatre, Source Theatre, The Actors Theatre of Washington, and in numerous productions on all four stages at Studio Theatre. Nancy is a two-time nominee for the Helen Hayes Award. Training: Smith College, Georgetown University, George Washington University, Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory. MADELEINE BURKE PITT has performed at Studio Theatre and Studio 2ndStage as well as at many other DC theatres, including The Folger Shakespeare Theatre, The Keegan Theatre, and Solas Nua (Helen Hayes nomination). Madeleine taught and directed youth theatre for over 10 years and has also taught workshops at American University and the University of Maryland. Training: Catholic University (MFA program), Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory. DEBORAH RILEY is a life-long dance artist and more recent practitioner of Laban Movement Analysis, the basis for teaching movement arts to people of all ages and abilities. As a touring artist and educator, she has performed throughout Europe and the US as well as choreographing over 40 original works for her company, Deborah Riley Dance Projects. She was an artist-inresidence at DC’s Dance Place from 1988–2017 and is retiring as Co-Director of this legendary institution this year. In 2016 she was honored with the Pola Nirenska Award for Lifetime Achievement in Dance.

SERGE SEIDEN has been a member of the Conservatory faculty for 22 years and is currently the Managing Director and Producer of Mosaic Theater Company of DC. Serge held numerous positions at Studio Theatre including Producing Director, Resident Stage Manager, Casting Director, and Literary Manager. Serge has directed 30 productions for Studio Theatre and recently directed at Mosaic Theater Company, Synetic Theater, MetroStage, Olney Theatre Center, Adventure Theatre, and Theater J. Awards: Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Director, Resident Musical. Training: Swarthmore College, Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory. COLETTE YGLESIAS SILVER has taught dance at The Dance Exchange, the University of Maryland, George Washington University, and The Street 70 Theatre Apprentice training program and has been on the faculty of Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory since 1981. She was the artistic director of Dance Arts/Moving Arts from 1980-87. Training: The Academy of the Washington Ballet, The Juilliard School. MATTHEW VAKY was a member of The Guthrie Acting Company in Minneapolis and worked as an actor, director, and writer for Mixed Blood Theatre, SteppingStone Theatre, and The Playwrights Center. Locally, he has performed for Center Stage, GALA Hispanic Theatre, and Quotidian. His one man show ROGER (Not His Real Name) was produced in New York at the United Solo Festival and his new play, Masque of Power will be produced in Minnesota starring his son, Nathanael. Matthew teaches at Capital City Charter School. Training: Carnegie-Mellon University, University of St. Catherine. ANDERSON WELLS is an actor, singer, and member of the acting faculty at the Conservatory. He has worked with theatre education programs at Centerstage in Maryland and Tyler Hill Camp in Pennsylvania. He has performed as a singer with DC’s award-winning groups Vox Pop and The Lobby and as an actor with Pinky Swear productions, Brave Spirits Theatre, Silver Spring Stage, Rep Stage, and The Hub Theatre. Work Study opportunities are available for new and returning students to the Conservatory. Every semester a limited number of need-based work-study students are offered the opportunity to assist the Education department in exchange for reduced tuition. To register for adult classes, just call and a registrar will answer any questions and help you with placement. Payment is due in full at the time of registration, or you may pay a $100 deposit to hold your spot in class, and pay the remaining balance of tuition on or before the first day of class. We accept most forms of payment including cash, check, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. Registration cannot be guaranteed until the registration fee is paid. To register for the Young Actors Program (ages 13-17), call now or register online at studiotheatre.org/acting-conservatory.
