WELCOME FRIENDS, As we approach the end of the first season of Studio X, I can only say, this may the best show yet. Studio hosted Geoff Sobelle several seasons ago with his company rainpan 43 with All Wear Bowlers, Amnesia Curiosa, and machines machines machines machines machines machines machines. We’re thrilled to welcome him back with this odd and amusing encounter in a warehouse of stuff in The Object Lesson. It’s all about the ephemera of life discovered. Like all of Studio X productions, this is a play full of distinctive theatrical intent. The Object Lesson team — director David Neumann and set designer-installation artist Steven Dufala along with Geoff Sobelle — have fully and expansively occupied the environs of Stage 4. We reside here in a warehouse and experience whatever story Geoff pulls from a cardboard box. As a set designer, I know well that we have a secret relationship with our things — that we accompany our stuff as much as it accompanies us into the unknown of our lives. These items themselves seem to have very little meaning, but the things collect, discard, adopt, embrace, and sometimes just drag around can hold our memories, reveal our aspirations, expose the core of who we are. What are the chances of a cardboard box of…well, of junk to combust into romance, passion, and tender humor? Join us to experience this buoyant journey into the unknown with an open heart. I hope you enjoy this show. BEST,
DEBRA BOOTH DIRECTOR OF DESIGN

ARTIS T BI O S GEOFF SOBELLE (Creator/Performer) is a theatre artist dedicated to the “sublime ridiculous.” He is the co-artistic director of rainpan 43, a renegade absurdist outfit devoted to creating original actor-driven performance works. Using illusion, film, and outdated mechanics, R43 creates surreal, poetic pieces that look for humanity where you least expect it and find grace where no one is looking. R43’s shows include all wear bowlers (Innovative Theatre Award, Drama Desk nomination), Amnesia Curiosa, machines machines machines machines machines machines machines (Obie Award – design), and Elephant Room (commissioned by Center Theatre Group). His independent work includes Flesh and Blood & Fish and Fowl and The Object Lesson (commissioned by Lincoln Center Theater). He has been a company member of Philadelphia’s Pig Iron Theatre Company since 2001. All of his work to date has premiered at the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival before touring nationally and internationally. As a teacher, Mr. Sobelle has led workshops all over the world in devised theatre creation, physical approach to character, clown, and “jeu.” He is a core teacher at the Pig Iron School in Philadelphia (APT) and is on the faculty at Bard College. His work has been supported by the Independence Foundation, the Philadelphia Theatre Initiative, the Wyncote Foundation, USArts International, the Princeton Atelier, the MAP Fund, and the New England Foundation for the Arts. He is a 2006 Pew Fellow and is a 2009 Creative Capital grantee. He is a graduate of Stanford University, and trained in physical theatre at École Jacques Lecoq in Paris, France. DAVID NEUMANN (Director) is a director, choreographer, dancer, and actor. He studied theatre at SUNY Purchase and danced with several choreographers including Doug Elkins, Jane Comfort, Sally Silvers, and Doug Varone. As his work expanded into theatre, opera, and film, he worked with artists including Hal Hartley, Laurie Anderson, Peter Sellars, Lee Breuer, JoAnne Akalaitis, and Robert Woodruff. Mr. Neumann founded his own company, the Advanced Beginner Group in 2001, with work presented at PS122, New York Live Arts, Central Park SummerStage, Celebrate Brooklyn, Symphony Space, and The Kitchen. Neumann and company have been honored with four Bessie Awards, a 2009 Creative Capital Grant, a 2011 Foundation for Contemporary Arts Award for Dance, and a 2014 NDP Production Grant from New England Foundation for the Arts for his latest work I Understand Everything Better, which premiered at Abrons Arts Center last April. STEVEN DUFALA (Scenic Installation Design) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Philadelphia. While he works primarily in collaboration with his brother Billy, he also works on as many other projects in as many other fields as possible, being drawn in particular to works that explore overlapping concerns of various disciplines. He makes drawings, clothes, furniture, prints,
music, sculpture, photos, books, and thinks an awful lot about what all these things have in common and what on earth people do with them. Mr. Dufala has been working intermittently with dance and theatre as a designer for about 15 years, and over this time has worked with Pig Iron Theatre Company, BalletX, anonymous bodies, Geoff Sobelle, and others. With his brother Billy, he received an Obie Award for design with rainpan 43’s machines machines machines machines machines machines machines. Mr. Dufala and his brother co-teach sculpture at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and are represented by the Fleisher/Ollman gallery in Philadelphia. Their work is in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the West Collection, and many private collections. CHRISTOPHER KUHL (Lighting Design) is a lighting, scenic, installation designer for new performance, theatre, dance, and opera. Recent work includes The Nether, Eclipsed, The Author, Next Stop Amazingland, and Elephant Room (Center Theatre Group), Straight White Men (Young Jean Lee’s Theater Company, The Public Theater, Centre Pompidou), Holoscenes (Early Morning Opera, Nuit Blanche Toronto), ABACUS (Early Morning Opera, REDCAT, BAM, Sundance Film Festival, EMPAC), Dog Days (LA Opera), and John Cage Song Books (SF Symphony, Carnegie Hall). He has also had the pleasure of working and making art at the Fusebox Festival, On the Boards, Kennedy Center, LA Opera, St. Ann’s Warehouse, Philly Live Arts, Arena Stage, MCA Chicago, The Chocolate Factory, The Kitchen, Jacob’s Pillow, Beijing Music Festival, KVS Belgium, MAC France, the Holland Festival, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He has received two Ovation Awards, a Drammy, and a Horton Award. In 2011 Mr. Kuhl received Center Theatre Group’s annual Richard E. Sherwood Award, and in 2014 was awarded a Bessie Award for Outstanding Visual Design. He is originally from New Mexico, a graduate of CalArts, and an associate artist of Hand2Mouth Theatre. NICK KOURTIDES (Sound Design) designs for musical theatre and creates sound environments for collaborative ensemble works. Previous collaborations with Geoff Sobelle include Elephant Room and Flesh and Blood & Fish and Fowl. His New York credits include Sunset o639 Hours at the Joyce, The Object Lesson for BAM Next Wave, Elephant Room at St. Ann’s Warehouse, Our Aeneid at Red Bull, Carson McCullers Talks About Love at Rattlestick, Jomama Jones: Radiate at Soho Rep, and Chekhov Lizardbrain at Under The Radar and Soho Think Tank. Mr. Kourtides’ work has been seen internationally at Lublin Konfrontacje Teatralne, Paris Quartier d’Ete, London Barbican, and Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Regionally, he has worked at McCarter Theatre, Wilma Theater, Center Theatre Group, Folger Theatre, Milwaukee Rep, La Jolla Playhouse, Philadelphia Theatre Company, Walnut Street Theatre, Prince Music Theater, and many others. With Pig Iron Theatre Company, he has designed Cankerblossom, Isabella, Chekhov Lizardbrain, and Mission to Mercury. He was a visiting instructor in sound design at Swarthmore College in 2010. AB O UT S T UDI O THE ATR E Now in its sixth season under the leadership of Artistic Director David Muse, Studio Theatre is dedicated to the best in contemporary theatre, producing an uncommonly rich and wide-ranging repertoire of provocative new writing from around the world alongside unique special events and inventive stagings of contemporary classics, performed by acclaimed actors in intimate spaces. Devoted to artistic excellence, Studio Theatre strives to present audiences with extraordinary writing, sophisticated design, and stunning performance. Our commitment to connecting actors and audience is built into our architecture, where none of our four performance spaces seats more than 225 patrons. No theatre of comparable budget size operates such exclusively intimate spaces. Throughout the Theatre’s 37-year history, the quality of its work has been recognized by sustained community support as well as with 341 nominations and 63 Helen Hayes Awards for excellence in professional theatre. The 2015 – 2016 season inaugurated Studio X, a new umbrella for a wide variety of productions. Studio X is a consolidation and outgrowth of the type of work Studio previously produced in its Studio Lab, Special Events, and 2ndStage programming series. The work of Studio X remains purposefully eclectic, encompassing presented work, plays that will benefit from particularly intimate or immersive stagings, and some of Studio’s world premiere projects.

S PO NS O R S P O T L IG H T THE MANDY AND DAVID TEAM Tell us about yourselves. Mandy Mills and David Getson are the principal agents at The Mandy & David Team at Compass. Since partnering in 2005, their business has steadily grown into a 16-person team, dedicated to providing a sophisticated, full-service real estate experience that serves the needs of their varied clientele. In 2015, they helped more than 200 families successfully sell or buy a home in the DC area, with total sales of over $120 million. When did you first become involved with Studio Theatre? David lives in the neighborhood and began attending plays at Studio in 2011. Around that time, he and Mandy made a decision to be more focused in their local charitable work and to seek out two organizations that were contributing to the arts and DC’s youth. What drew you to Studio? Studio’s commitment to excellence, from its promotion of today’s leading playwrights to its world-class facility, was an obvious draw and something that we both admired and aspired to. The richness of their youth programs and its history as an early mainstay of Logan Circle only strengthened our belief that Studio was an organization we wanted to be more involved with. What role does Studio Theatre play in the community? Studio is of course helping to establish DC as an international destination for the arts, but their development
of local talent and outreach to financially challenged students is both inspirational and affirming of the notion that the arts are crucial to quality of life. What is your favorite production you’ve seen here? Why? That’s a really tough question! But The Night Watcher was a production that really stuck with both of us. Mandy is a mother of three young children, so, there’s a definite connection there. But writer/ performer Charlayne Woodard’s performance was so raw and powerful, we had to see it more than once. What would you say to another organization who is considering supporting Studio? It’s an amazing, artistic organization that breathes life and flavor into the community. Take the time to talk with the leadership and board members and we’re sure you’ll be convinced that Studio Theatre is committed to this city and its residents and deserves your support.
