Ears are profound, however eyes are frivolous, easily to be satisfied. Said Robert Bresson, an acclaimed French film director. Soundscape is a theme that I and my partner try to approach different aspect of sensory in designing, and our design and research do lots of efforts to deconstruct sound into three keywords, ‘space’, ‘time’ and ‘memory’. The nished project presented as a designing exhibition which following the method we made.

Space

Sound Spaces Manifesto, drew by Bernhard Leitner

First part is about space. The research of space refers to a published work by Bernhard Leitner : Sound Spaces Manifesto. It declaims that when several speakers speaking at the same time, there is a connection between the sound, and the connection creates ‘space’. Furthermore, the speakers arranged in different ways create different space. Base to this manifesto, we try to record some sounds in the plaza of college, which growing lots of maple trees with rich biodiversity and human activities.

The sounds we recorded can be categorized in to three kinds, environment sounds, faunas’ sounds and sounds of human. To display the record, we draw lines between sounds to show the space in the site. The databases basically decide the guideline of the space, structure and framework. The environmental sounds decide the free-flowing shape. The birds’ sounds present as the high levels, and the sounds of human activities define the character of spaces in the project.

Time

Second part is about time and density of light we de ned. We record the sounds in the site for 24hrs, and analysis the pitch, volume and diversity. Furthermore, we arrange t he so un d in t o a soun dsca pe score. Subsequently, we translate the density into light, which people can sense when they wandering in the project we made.

In order to create the light effect, 5 layers of PVC films were set in the project, and the PVC films can reflect the sunshine, and let the sunlight lters in at the same time. The structures of films consist of multi-hexagons shaped metal, which become a solid construction like bee hex, to form the whole project freely. Every diagonals of the hexagons are about 2 meters, means that people can feel the light in several steps. In this case, the whole project is full of different kind of light density, that arranged by the soundscape score.

Memory The third part is memory. Sounds and memories are deeply connected, and the contexts of our project. We try to replicate the collective memory of all faculty members in the college through projections. Recalling the memory in this way as an exhibition not only make it profound, also let people experience different aspect of memory. The sounds of memory can be categorized into four different typical themes: railroad, bell tower, Christmas and night market.

Railroad A railroad runs along with the boundary of college, and everyone need to go across the railroad to school. It is not just a public transport, but also a memorie of college lives . Image of Railroad, drew by Jung Tu

Bell tower The bell tower located on the lawn, the middle of college, and ringing for every important moment. The bell can always recall students’ profound memories and experiences. Image of Railroad, drew by Jung Tu

Christmas CYCU is a Christian university, and Christmas is an important festival for us. The whole December is filled of joy and romantic with cold wind but warm heart. This experience might be the most precious memory. Image of Railroad, drew by Jung Tu

Night market A night market located beside college, connected closely with student. Venders ar oun d t h e st reet w it h bois terous atmosphere is the daily scene of the night market, be full of noises, conversations and sounds of cooking.

Besides Sound box

Sections of Sound box, drew by Kuang

After we finished the project, we decide to design a xed installation to let people hear the sounds and feeling the three themes we de ned. The inner of sound box is consisted of several fre e surfaces, wh ich we predicted to reflect the sounds perfectly, and concentrating into a powerful and harmony state. However, the outside of sound box is covered by some pieces of mirror for removing the disturbs of eyes sight.

The inside of sound box is consisted of several free surfaces, re ecting the sounds perfectly. However, the outside of sound box is covered by some pieces of mirror for removing the disturbs of eyes sight. Also, there are some We think that this kind of experience should be private and to vibrate the sounds better, the scale can afford for two people at once, and the structure is hollow.

LANDSCAPE SUPERIMPOSITION #RIVER_BANK #CONNECTING #GEATHERING #URBANISM Site Location: Taoyuan City, Taiwan Work Type: Academic | Team Partner: Jung Tu Duration: MAY 15 - JUL 15 Supervisor: Yu-Feng Wang

Perspective, drew by Kuang

Zhongli District in Taoyuan city is old but new, both simple and complex, and full of memories at the same time. However, this place, which began to develop form LaoJie River, lost the connection between people and the ecology of the river. Due to this situation, we planned to gather the public, environment and river in this site through an urban waterscape.

Site

disappeared, all this are the important elements. Due to these complex situations, we need to set a new design methodology to deal with the problems of new urban plan and the vanished old city contexts.

Diagram, drew by Jung Tu

The idea to deal with so many different issues is through superimposition, a skill means to put especially a picture, words on top of something else, and in this project, we superimpose several layers of design, which are water, planting , human activities and layer of construction we designed. The south of the site is the area of human activity, which serves the crowd of subway station, and as a park for pedestrians and neighbors. At the same time, the north of the project is more ecological. People can only pass this section through a tail we designed.

Diagram, drew by Jung Tu

The site has been covered by a concrete construction, used as a parking space, for decades; however, due to a new urban plan released, the construction is going to be torn down and a new urban plan will set a new subway station beside the river. Be si d e s t h e n ew u rb a n p l a n , t h er e are many problems need to be solved. According the research, people were close to the River, but vanished nowadays. Concept We design the construction to connect all these layers. The construction is designed with parameter, when the function changed, the factors of the construction adjusted. Including high, shape and form. For example, when the construction as a street furniture, the factors will adjust to t the human scale. As a project related to the River, the terrain needed to be designed. In this project, we planned to reach few targets, appearing the plants, clean water and the highly connection between the public and the river,. Diagram of Railroad, drew by Jung Tu

PUBLIC SKY RIDER #BRIDGE #NODES #ELEVATION #MOUNTAIN SHAPED Site Location: New Taipei City, Taiwan Work Type: Individual | Professional Duration: JUL 17 - JUL 17 Instructor: Chung-Hsun Wu Bo-Yen Huang EConstruction: WE architecture

Perspective, drew by Kuang

Sky rider is a new project for approaching outdoor activities for citizens and linking MRT Sanchong station and the other bank across the oodway to create a better walking space for pedestrians. At the same time, Sky Rider is also a new city image to improve the aesthetics of New Taipei city, which creates a mountain like visual effect resonating with the Datun Mountain in the north and Chung-Hsin bridge as a picturesque urban landscape.

Concept

Photo, shoot by dA Vision

According to the designing guideline decided by WE architecture, the bridge is predicted to present the Chinese Valentine's Day which is about the day of gathering the apart lovers represent day and night. Also, the planting design is a big issue. We designed the patch and nodes in two different colors, deep blue and light blue, with uorescent sand to improve the image of galaxy, and notes of distance per 50 meters to inform people the specific location they are. Bike lanes and pedestrian precinct are important milestones for a hospitable city, and Sky Rider contains both functions to make the surrounding area more reachable, which is a problem in this area. Lack of an easy way to go across the oodway led to some problems like unbalance of city developments and inconvenience of going toward Taipei city. And we set some nodes to make the bridge attractive.Nodes play important roles in this project that provide several outdoor activities including enjoy the landscape of New Taipei city, join the outdoor gathering, take the rest and so on.

Photo, shoot by dA Vision

With these activities, the life style of New Taipei citizens could have much more possibilities then ever for not only health, but fun. To reach this goal, we represent the plants on the river bank in these nodes to create garden-like image and to please people. These plants, such as Napier grass, Jamaica False-valerian and Nandina domestica are easy to take care, which is a bene t for government.

Elevation There is a dissertation published by Charles Anderson, the landscape designer of Olympic Sculpture Park in Seattle, talking about paradigm shift, and that is basically the main concept of the faรงade design of this project. The entire Taipei basin is

surrounded by mountains, and if we look at the city, the background is always the mountain ranges. Due to this paradigm, we transformed the landform into this project, with the ood way as the basin and Sky Rider as the mountain range emerging in the city.

Plants The plants we selected for nodes are designated to represent the nature of river banks, which not only resonate with the site, but bring the consistency to this place. On the other hand, the design of facade is for mountain-like image. To reach the goal, we select some climbing plants like hops and Japanese ivy. These vegetations bring the elegant green into the project and provide the shelter for the blistering sun. In this project, the faรงade is a combination of gazebo and planters, flitters the excess sunlight and provides good open space for the public.

ARCHITECTURE RENEW VILLAGES RURAL MASTERPLAN AGRICULTURE HOUSING Site Location: Changxing County, China Work Type: Professional | Individual Duration: FEB 18 - APL 18 Supervisor: Tzu-Yao Lee

Perspective, drew by Kuang

Renew Villages is a master plan for revitalizing an old framing village in China called Changxing. Changxing village was a prosperous farmland with lots of agricultural products like walnuts, sunflowers and sesames, but, losing of young man and transformation of agriculture led to the village decline. Fortunately, local government has a plan to revitalize Changxing village by constructing several facilities to stimulate the return of youth, establishing resort industry and transforming the agriculture and economics.

Site

Before depicting the concept of how we solve the problems, the industry model needed to be explained. The traditional industry model can be categorized into three different types. Primary industry, the secondary industry and the tertiary industry. However, we believe that the traditional way may not solve the problems, so we designed a new type of business model which times all three kinds of industry together as sixth level industry. Local farming, local processing and local severing is the main idea to revitalize the village, and if we run the system well, traveling, education, return of young people can be stimulated. With the system running, the benefits mentioned above come respectively, and the additional infrastructure, such as workshop, retails, hotel and so on, will be needed. At this stage, I designed several architectures shown on the masterplan at right. These building basically are schematic design, for the communication among the client, residents, and local government, but still can be noticed that containing the concepts mentioned above and the design guidelines. The guidelines we set up tried to follow the context of site and to be sustainable, which is not only good for environment, but also local economics and society.

Library Library is an important infrastructure, collecting knowledges and connecting the public, and it will be needed in this place to improve the welfare of residents, which is also a direction of willing of young man return. The library is a tow stories building with roof garden and huge plaza in front, connecting the pools and village. The main facades are built by glass that can reflect the landscape of the pool and be transparent for people inside to saw the view outside. The plaza in front of library plays an important role to connect the pool and the wetland that can make library not only collecting of knowledge form books, but also from the ecosystem. Farming museum Farming museum is to display the process and the ingredients, including how to cultivate and to harvest. One of the most important traits of sixth level industry is coordinated process. Farming museum is to depict it, and to enlighten the visitors what is the goods of food. The site is located in the farmland of rape ower, producing oil, and near by the pond. Due to the surrounds, visitors can see the whole process from farmland to table. In order to practice the goal productive, farming museum is designed with huge observation deck and windows to lift the house for several meters and not to disturb the growing of plants.

Villa Villa is a different purpose of accommodation, which is to let visitors have a long vocation with a series of health promotion like meditation, diet therapy and hydrotherapy. The idea of heal promotion is according to the healthy life the residents of village live in, and we believe that it can bring bene ts for both visitors and the village. Villa is located beside the lake and wetland. We built six houses, a public building and a pedestrian trail in this project. As stilt houses, the architectures decline the destroy of natural environment and the design of architecture and landscape can bring people closer to the nature. Diagram, drew by Kuang

INTERIOR FLORAL CEILING CEILING DEVICE DETAIL_DESIGN CONSTRUCTION S it e L o c at ion : Ta ip ei C it y, Taiwan Work Type: Studio | Team Partner: Yu-Ju Chang Duration: 07.16-08.16 Supervisor: Jen-Hwang Ho Yi-Shing Chen

Perspective, drew by Yu-Ju Chang

Floral ceiling is a project studying detail design of construction, and I and my partner practice the whole process form schematic design to assembly by our own hands. The main idea of this project is to decorate the DMO studio with a free- owing shaped ceiling and integrate lights, bulletin board and air-conditioning at the same time. Also, to improve the possibility of multi-functions, we built ceiling hanging on wheel and axle to achieve the goal of transformation.

Concept structure which contain wheels and axles that can let staff easily operate the device to change the surface of ceiling.

Diagrams, drew by Yu-Ju Chang

The site of floral ceiling is a design studio called DMO. Due to the requirements of studio, integrating lights, bulletin board and air-conditioning, and create an attractive installation at the same time, we chose the ceiling as the aim.

The final problem is how to build the ceiling. In this step, we divided the surface into 66 units (iron flowers) and tried so many kinds of materials that could bear the weight of lights and to be exible at the same time. Finally, we chose the metal as the unit and the leather as the joint.

Surface is the first problem we need to solve. I and my partner used the software, Rhinoceros 3D and grasshopper, to do the form finding and to simulate the effects of light and winds. The second problem is the structure. Due to the activities the studio through are multiple, we wanted to build the ceiling as an un xed device, showing different effects of light to fit different activities. Because of this, the ceiling need a hanging system. Basically, the exible ceiling hanging on the Diagrams, drew by Yu-Ju Chang

Details As the idea mentioned above, the system of wheel and axel is the foundation of project. In order to build the structure that can bare the weight of all of the units (iron owers) and operated easily, we practiced the possibility and tried nding the best situation of wheel size, number, spacing, and the result shown on the diagram below. The layout of the ceiling is practice on the software and can be categorized into five groups. To build the ceiling accurate, section ABC are the key point, which not only in uences the position of whole ceiling, and also plays an important role to be waving.
