EXHIBITION 01_SOUNDSCAPE SPACE TIME MEMORY INSTALLATION

Site Location: Taoyuan City, Taiwan Work Type: Team / Academic Partner: Jung Tu Duration: 09.15-07.16 Instructor: Yu-Feng Wang

EXHIBITION 01_SOUNDSCAPE Ears are profound, however eyes are frivolous, easily to be satisfied. Said Robert Bresson, an acclaimed French film director. Soundscape is a theme that I and my partner try to approach different aspect of sensory in designing, and our design and research do lots of efforts to deconstruct sound into three keywords, ‘space’, ‘time’ and ‘memory’. The finished project presented as a designing exhibition which following the method we made.

-SPACE-

First part is about space. The research of space refers to a published work by Bernhard Leitner : Sound Spaces Manifesto. The manifesto declaims that when several speaker speaking at the same time, there is a connection between the sound, and the connection creates ‘space’. Furthermore, the speakers arranged in different ways create different space. Base to this manifesto, we try to record sounds in the plaza of colle ge, which growing lots of Taiwanese Maple trees with rich biodiversity and human activities. The sounds we recorded can be categorized in to three kinds, which are environment sounds, faunas’ sounds and sounds of human activities, and we chose three Chinese word to represent them.

ENVIRONMENT

FAUNA

Base to this manifesto, we try to record some sounds in the plaza of college, which growing lots of Taiwanese Maple trees with rich biodiversity and human activities. The sounds we recorded can be categorized in to three kinds, which are environment sounds, faunas’ sounds and sounds of human activities, and we chose three Chinese word to represent them. To display the record, we draw lines between sounds to show the space in the site as our databases. The databases basically decide the guideline of the space, structure and framework of our project. The environmental sounds decide the free-flowing shape. The birds’ sounds present as the high levels, and the sounds of human activities define the character of spaces in the project.

-TIME-

Following, the second part is about time. Time is about density of light we deďŹ ned.

In order to create the light effect, rapid variation by brightness and darkness, 5 layers of PVC films were set in the project, and the PVC films can reflect the sunshine, and let the sunlight filters in at the same time. The structures of films consist of multihexagons shaped metal, which become a solid construction like bee hex, to form the whole project freely. Every diagonals of the hexagons are about 2 meters, means that people can feel the light in several steps. In this case, the whole project is full of different kind of light density, that arranged by the soundscape score.

In this part, we record the sounds in the site for 24hrs, and analysis the pitch, volume and diversity. Furthermore, we arrange the sound into a soundscape score. Subsequently, we translate the density into light, which people can sense when they wandering in the project we made.

As the rendering image and model pictures below, the structure can perfectly reach the requires of guideline of space and sound density.

-MEMORYThe third part is memory. Sounds and memories are deeply connected, and the memory is the context of our exhibition project. We try to replicate the collective memory of all faculty members and students in the college in our project through LED light or screen and speakers. Recalling the memory in this way as an exhibition not only make it profound, also let people experience different aspect of memory. The sounds of memory can be categorized into four different typical themes: railroad, bell tower, Christmas and night market.

RAILROAD There is a railroad run along with the boundary of college, and everyone who try to get to the college need to go across the railroad. The railroad not only just a public transport for students, but also memories of college lives and nostalgia for hometown.

BELL TOWER The bell tower located on the lawn, the middle of college, and ringing for every important moment, such as graduation, orientation week and sport competitions. T h e b e l l c a n a lw ay s r e c a l l s t u d e n t s ’ p r o fo u n d m e m o r i e s an d e x p e r i e n c e s .

CHRISTMAS The college I studied is a Christian university. As a Christian university, Christmas is an important festival for students and college. The whole December is filled of joy and romantic with cold wind but warm heart. This experience might be the most precious memory for all members of school.

NIGHT MARKET A night market located beside college, and has a close connection with students’ lives. Venders and pedestrians scattered around the long and narrow street with boisterous atmosphere is the daily scene of the night market, be full of noises, conver sations and sounds of cooking. 10

BESIDES THAT -SOUND BOX-

After we finished the project, we decide to design a fixed installation to let people hear the sounds and feeling the three themes we defined. The inner of sound box is consisted of several free surfaces, which we predicted to reflect the sounds perfectly, and concentrating into a powerful and harmony state. However, the outside of sound box is covered by some pieces of mirror for removing the disturbs of eyes sight. After w e finished the project, we decide to design a fixed installation to let people hear the sounds and feeling the three themes we defined.

The inside of sound box is consisted of several free surfaces, which we predicted to reflect the sounds perfectly, and concentrating into a powerful and harmony state. However, the outside of sound box is covered by some pieces of mirror for removing the disturbs of eyes sight. Also, there are some Due to we think that this kind of experience should be private and to vibrate the sounds better, the scale of quite small, that only can afford for two people at once, and the structure is hollow. Microphones installed on the outside surfaces, and speakers inside play the sounds nearby the microphones. In this case, people can sense the sounds profoundly and discover several aspects of sounds.

LANDSCAPE 02_SUPERIMPOSITION RIVER_BANK CONNECTING GEATHERING URBANISM Site Location: Taoyuan City, Taiwan Work Type: Team / Academic Partner: Jung Tu Duration: 05.15-07.15 Instructor: Yu-Feng Wang

LANDSCAPE 02_SUPERIMPOSITION Zhongli District in Taoyuan city is old but new, both simple and complex, and full of memories at the same time. However, this place, which began to develop form Lao-Jie River, lost the connection between people and the ecology of the river. Due to this situation, we planned to gather the public, environment and river in this site through an urban waterscape.

-SITE-

The idea to deal with so many different issues is through superimposition. Superimposition is a skill means to put especially a picture, words, etc. on top of something else, and in this project, we superimpose several layers of design, which are the water layer, planting layer, layer of human activities and layer of construction we designed to fit the function.

The site has been covered by a concrete construction, used as a parking space, for decades; however, due to a new urban plan released by local government, the construction is going to be torn down and reappear the river. Also, the new urban plan will set a new subway station beside the river, so the design should consider the increasing needs of the open space. Besides the new urban plan, there are many problems of several different aspects need to be solved, including the increasing user led by the subway station, losing of old contexts of city and vulnerable ecology in this site. According the research, people were so close to the Lao-Jie River, but the old screens of the river vanished nowadays. The unique aquatic plants and eagles no longer exist, the water is polluted and the wetland disappeared, and these are the important elements we trying to reappear in the side. Due to these complex situations, we need to set a new design methodology to deal with the problems of new urban plan and the vanished old city contexts.

Through the methodology of superimposition, there are some traits can be seen on the master plan. The south of the site is the area of human activity, which serves the crowd of subway station, and as a park for pedestrians and neighbors. At the same time, the north of the project is more ecological. People can only pass this section through a tail we designed, that is shaped of free curve to slow down the speed of people walk, and stop at some node we predicted and devising a picturesque screen just like the old Lao-Jie River was.

16

17

-CONCEPTAfter the we superimpose the layers of the site, we design the construction to connect all these layers. The construction is designed with parameter, when the function changed, the factors of the construction adjusted. The factors include high, shape and form. For example, when the construction as a street furniture, the factors will adjust to fit the human scale. Furthermore, the construction can be recognized as several functions, including foot bridge, paving, pavilion, trail and railing. As a project related to Lao-Jie River, the terrain needed to be designed. In this project, we planned to reach few targets, appearing the plants, clean water and the highly connection between the public and the river, through design the terrain showed on the sections below. Finally, to complete this project, we depicted the principle of this design by the diagrams on the right.

PUBLIC 03_SKY_RIDER BRIDGE NODES ELEVATION MOUNTAIN_SHAPED Site Location: New Taipei City, Taiwan Work Type: Individual / Professional/ Unbuild Duration: 06.17-07.17 Instructor: Chung-Hsun Wu Bo-Yen Huang Construction: WE architecture

PUBLIC 03_SKY_RIDER Sky rider is a new project for approaching outdoor activities for citizens and linking MRT Sanchong station and the other bank across the floodway to create a better walking space for pedestrians. At the same time, Sky Rider is also a new city image to improve the aesthetics of New Taipei city, which creates a mountain like visual effect resonating with the Datun Mountain in the north and Chung-Hsin bridge as a picturesque urban landscape.

-CONCEPT-

In this case, as landscape consultants, my company and I were delegated to that delegated to design for the space on the bridge including the bike lane, leisure space, observation deck, path and the most important, elevation. According to the designing guideline decided by WE architecture, the bridge is predicted to present the Chinese Valentine's Day which is about the day of gathering the apart lovers represent day and night. Also, the planting design is a big issue. We designed the patch and nodes in two different colors, deep blue and light blue, with fluorescent sand to improve the image of galaxy, and notes of distance per 50 meters to inform people the specific location they are. Bike lanes and pedestrian precinct are important milestones for a hospitable city, and Sky Rider contains both functions to make the surrounding area more reachable, which is a problem in this area. Lack of an easy way to go across the floodway led to some problems like unbalance of city developments and inconvenience of going

toward Taipei city. And we set some nodes to make the bridge attractive.Nodes play important roles in this project that provide several outdoor activities including enjoy the landscape of New Taipei city, join the outdoor gathering, take the rest and so on. With these activities, the life style of New Taipei citizens could have much more possibilities then ever for not only health, but fun. To reach this goal, we represent the plants on the river bank in these nodes to create garden-like image and to please people. These plants, such as Napier grass, Jamaica False-valerian and Nandina domestica are easy to take care, which is a benefit for government. 24

-ELEVATIONThere is a dissertation published by Charles Anderson, the landscape designer of Olympic Sculpture Park in Seattle, talking about paradigm shift, and that is basically the main concept of the faรงade design of this project.

Charles Anderson believes that a good landscape design is always related to the place it belonged, and one of the strategies is to transform the original landscape into something related, or in other word,

26

landscape mimics. Take Olympic Sculpture Park for instance, the landscape design transforms the whole landform of the west side of the U.S., which are the valley, meadow, grove and shore, or paradigm in his word. The space sequence basically follows the order, and the whole park is a miniature landform of western America.

Look back the site, the entire Taipei basin is surrounded by mountains, and if we look at the city, the background is always the mountain ranges. Due to this paradigm, we transformed the landform into this project, with the flood way as the basin and Sky Rider as the mountain range emerging in the city.

27

-PLANTSOn the one hand, the plants we selected for nodes are designated to represent the nature of river banks, which not only resonate with the site, but bring the consistency to this place. On the other hand, the design of facade is for mountain-like image. To reach the goal, we select some climbing plants like hops, passion flower and Japanese ivy. These vegetations not only bring the elegant green into the project, but provide the shelter for

the blistering sun and sprinkle. This function is so important especially in Taipei city, which rains a lot and is scalding in summer. In this project, the faรงade is a combination of gazebo and planters, flitters the excess sunlight and provides good open space for the public. Through the design, people can wander on the bridge and have a great time.

ARCHITECTURE 04_RENEW_VILLAGES RURAL MASTERPLAN AGRICULTURE HOUSING Site Location: Changxing County,Zhicheng Town, China Work Type: Individual / Professional/planing Duration: 02.18-04.18 Instructor: Tzu-Yao Lee

ARCHITECTURE 04_RENEW_VILLAGES Renew Villages is a master plan for revitalizing an old framing village in China called Changxing. Changxing village was a prosperous farmland with lots of agricultural products like walnuts, sunflowers and sesames, but, losing of young man and transformation of agriculture led to the village decline. Fortunately, local government has a plan to revitalize Changxing village by constructing several facilities to stimulate the return of youth, establishing resort industry and transforming the agriculture and economics.

-SITE-

The project is related to three main keywords, aging population, declining agriculture, lack of basic infrastructure, and the aim is to solve the problems and to bring benefits to the local residents. According to the survey, the local agriculture products are actually high value, but the absence of marketing, business model, and resource led to this situation. Due to the invitation of local government, the company I served designed the whole business system and infrastructure, and the role I played is to design for several buildings of initial plan. Before depicting the concept of how we solve the problems mentioned above, the industry model needed to be explained. The traditional industry model can be categorized into three different types. Primary industry is about production of agriculture, fishing, forestry and so on. The secondary industry is manufacturing, construction. The tertiary industry is related to service industry, the main business in the society today. However, we believe that the traditional way may not solve the problems, so we designed a new type of business model which times all three

kinds of industry together as sixth level industry. Local farming, local processing and local severing is the main idea to revitalize the village, and if we run the system well, traveling, education, return of young people can be stimulated. With the system running, the benefits mentioned above come respectively, and the additional infrastructure, such as workshop, retails, hotel and so on, will be needed. At this stage, I designed several architectures shown on the masterplan at right. These building basically are schematic design, for the communication among the client, residents, and local government, but still can be noticed that containing the concepts mentioned above and the design guidelines. The guidelines we set up tried to follow the context of site and to be sustainable, which is not only good for environment, but also local economics and society.

-HOTELThe hotel is located at the south village, the north of the lake. The main concept of the hotel is to connect accommodations and environment as a resort, and to provide c om m u n i c at i n g s p a c e s u c h as l i b r a r y, committee and others. The most important key point of the hotel is to display the life style of local natural living. Local life style is simple but enrich, and its’ the thing we want to share with others. The hotel is a combination of two buildings with eight stories, and four stories below are connected, which are public space like lobby, restaurant and so on. The façade of hotel is vertical shading devices in proportion that effects the most, and fit to lights shining on different surface of the building. The arrange of shading devices, as elements, became sort of pattern as music did and fit the good environmental rules.

34

-AGRICULTURE WORKSHOPThe concept of agriculture workshop is to let people experience the process of agriculture products by their own hands, like producing sesame oil and drying walnuts. This kind of experience not only can promote local agriculture products as advertise do, but also inform people the benefits of organic food and sustainable environment. Education is one of the concepts in this project, and agriculture workshop plays an important role. The layout of the agriculture workshop is arranged as a village, seven buildings and open space developed by buildings, to improve the multi-functions. In this village like design, all kind of activities can be thrown easily. The exterior of the architectures is built by local woods, which can easily control the interior temperature.

35

-LIBRARYLibrary is an important infrastructure, a place collecting knowledges and connecting the public, for every distinct, and it will be needed in this place to improve the welfare of residents, which is also a direction of willing of young man return. The library is a tow stories building with roof garden and huge plaza in front, connecting the pools and village. The main facades are built by glass that can reect the landscape of the pool and be transparent for people inside to saw the view outside. The plaza in front of library plays an important role to connect the pool and the wetland that can make library not only collecting of knowledge form books, but also from the ecosystem.

36

-CO-WORKING OFFICEThe local government intends to set a coworking space to encourage young people return and starting a business to revitalize their hometown. Also, to run the business model well, which is sixth level industry mentioned above, the whole system had to upgrade to enterprise but not studio. The co-working office has five buildings and mass open space, which can make employee feel easy at work and to improve efficiency. The buildings are all five stories with balcony, and design as an open office can bring benefits for concentration and privacy. The open space is full of garden to create good view for office and offer good quality of break time.

37

-FARMING MUSEUMThe purpose of farming museum is to display the process and the ingredients of agriculture, including the how to cultivate and to harvest. One of the most important traits of sixth level industry is coordinated process, and the farming museum is to depict it, and to enlighten the visitors what is the goods of food. The site of farming museum is located in the farmland of rape flower, a plant to produce oil, and near by the pond, and due to this kind of surround, the visitors can see the whole process from farmland to table. In order to practice the goal productive, farming museum is designed with lots of observation deck and windows, and the form of architecture is stilt house, which lift the house for several meters and not to disturb the growing of plants.

38

-VILLAVilla is also an accommodation like hotel, but there is a different trait between these two, which is the purpose. The purpose of villa is to let visitors have a long vocation with a series of health promotion like meditation, diet therapy and hydrotherapy. The idea of heal promotion is according to the healthy life the residents of village live in, and we believe that it can bring benefits for both visitors and the village. Villa is located beside the lake and wetland. We built six houses, a public building and a pedestrian trail in this project. As stilt houses, the architectures decline the destroy of natural environment and the design of architecture and landscape can bring people closer to the nature.

INTERIOR 05_FLORAL _CEILING CEILING DEVICE DETAIL_DESIGN CONSTRUCTION Site Location: Taipei City, Taiwan Work Type: Team / Studio Partner: Yu-Ju Chang Duration: 07.16-08.16 Instructor: Jen-Hwang Ho Yi-shing Chen

INTERIOR 03_FLORAL_CEILING Floral ceiling is a project studying detail design of construction, and I and my partner practice the whole process form schematic design to assembly by our own hands. The main idea of this project is to decorate the DMO studio with a free-flowing shaped ceiling and integrate lights, bulletin board and air-conditioning at the same time. Also, to improve the possibility of multi-functions, we built ceiling hanging on wheel and axle to achieve the goal of transformation.

-CONCEPTwhich contain wheels and axles that can let staff easily operate the device to change the surface of ceiling. The site of floral ceiling is a design studio called DMO which devoted themselves for teaching the connection between designing and making. Due to the requirements of studio, to integrate lights, bulletin board and air-conditioning, and create an attractive installation at the same time, we chose the ceiling as the aim. As the diagram above depicted, the ceiling is formed by the image of lights and air-conditioning, and the ceiling shape the space of entrance.

The final problem is how to build the ceiling. In this step, we divided the surface into 66 units (iron flowers) and tried so many kinds of materials that could bear the weight of lights and to be flexible at the same time. Finally, we chose the metal as the unit and the leather as the joint.

Surface is the first problem we need to solve. I and my partner used the software, Rhinoceros 3D and grasshopper, to do the form finding and to simulate the effects of light and winds. The second problem is the structure. Due to the activities the studio through are multiple, we wanted to build the ceiling as an unfixed device, showing different effects of light to fit different activity. Because of this, the ceiling needed to be flexible and the hanging system is the best choice of structure for us. Basically, the flexible ceiling hanging on the structure

42

-DETAILSAs the idea mentioned above, the system of wheel and axel is basically the foundation of this project. In order to build a wheel and axel structure that can bare the weight of all of the units (iron flowers) and can be operate easily to transform. We practiced the possibility of the structure and tried finding the best situation of wheel size, number, spacing, and the result shown on the diagram below.

The layout of the ceiling is practice on the software and can be categorized into five groups, which are section A, section B, section C, the part fixed on the wall and others. To build the ceiling accurate, section ABC are the key point, which not only influences the position of whole ceiling, and also plays an important role to be waving.

43

-CONSTRUCTIONTo build this project, we draw the construction sequence as storyboard to present it clear.

Use the C-shaped steel as the support to build the structure, and assembe on the floor. Use the aluminum pipe and wheels with three different scale as the rotation mechanism to shape the form of ceiling by lift the ceiling at different rate. To assemble the units in a row and hang it on the structure. The assembling started by the three sections in the middle, which can transform dramatically.

44

Follow the assembling of the main three sections, fix the units on other two sides as mock-up. Fix the units on the wall by nailing. Nail the units on counter side into the floor.
