Unbuilt proposal for an entertainment room, 2016

I, Priyanka Shah, a resident of Vadodara, India; am an experienced Architect with a demonstrated history of working in the architecture & interior design industry having a vast skillset ranging from AutoCAD architecture, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, to Google Sketchup and space planning. I am a young entrepreneur with a Master of Arts (MA) focused in Architecture from University of Sheffield.

I hold a professional practice license registered by the Council of Architecture (CoA, Delhi) in India.

The portfolio is organized into two sections. The first section consists some of my most recent work, a few projects that I hold dear, undertaken as principal architect of Aloft Design Studio, since 6+ years.

The second section consists of a few competition project entries, temporary projects I worked on in the UK, and studio work while I was studying for Master of Arts in Architecture Design from the University of Sheffield in 2011-12.

Interior design for a digital media office

A unique design challenge presented itself in the form of office interiors for a young digital media company. We inherited this project post the planning stage and had to quickly build upon the original vision for the office.

Gimbal Media’s brief for its new design was clearly defined but still left room for plenty of creativity. Multiple companies co-habiting a practical, transparent and creative work environment- with an emphasis on social space.

We imagined the design as a journey of visual discovery throughout the space.

Walking in through the main glass doors, the eye is immediately drawn to the signage on the curved wall right across. Unlike ordinary ones, this floating signage is assembled in four layerseach a different texture and colour, emanating light and making it a unique deconstructive design element.

Leading up to the signage from the entrance in the passageway is a grey parametric ceiling conceptualized in the form of kinetic waves with varying depths.

Embedded in between the waves is an orderly chaos of lights, lighting up the entrance passageway. The parametric waves were later replaced by an inky black plain surface with profile lights hiding the central cooling service lines.

The polished dark epoxy floor in the passageway, designed as a scaled-up graphic is a metaphor literally reflecting the company branding with the G of the logo sweeping the curvature of the levelled surface. The juxta positioning of the logo on the floor with the floating signage gives it the appearance of a tinted shadow.

The passageway is enclosed by glass cabins, each housing a different company. Sustaining the theme of transparency throughout, the cabins are internally separated by glass as well. Totally utilitarian, brainstorming sessions are ideated with glass markers all over the partitions, eliminating the need for wall boards. When needed the internal partitions also slide out to form a continuous uninterrupted space. Coloured glass films in shades of yellow to red characterize each cabin, allotting identity. All the cabins have pristine white epoxy floors and are united under an entirely pastel blue ceiling.

Re-imagining a traditional reception as adaptable, the table can be rehabilitated as per requirement and is temporarily situated against the server system and electrical panel, skillfully hidden in the custom designed wardrobe. The entire office has a strong graphic design language, from the labeled units on the cabins, branding on the floor and the walls and even a sassy metal cutout at the entrance, which reads, ‘ready, fire, aim.’

Some of the other design areas include a pantry with a long table and high chairs stacked against the glass windows, enormous storage shelves in one of the cabins, a multipurpose room with a TT table that doubles as a conference table when needed, and restrooms decked with piccolo tiles in varying shades of blue.

Design elements in the form of leafy greens in metallic gold planters placed throughout the indoor environment and artwork handpicked by the client have really added to the charm of this office.

The director’s cabin, while nonhierarchical, is still dissimilar in tenor from the rest of the office. Prudently curated black luxe furniture, a modern chandelier, fabric carpeting and eclectic art pieces give it a more formal appeal.

By gently pulling at the joint that connects the two middle panels together, the door folds and slides across the wardrobe.

Instead of a single panel attached to a frame by two hinges, Torggler's Evolution Door folds into triangular sections that collapse in on themselves and turn round before straightening back up into a rectangle.

This radical redesign of a door inspired by Austrian artist Klemens Torggler uses a folding and pivoting system to collapse and roll to one side.

RESIDENTIAL RENOVATION, GOTRI | VADODARA (2020) Home renovation project for a bungalow in Gotri Sliding partition & display

KITCHEN AND DINING AREA : In this residential project, we have given the dining area it's own personality in terms of a pure white stone table and colour pop mustard yellow chairs.

The unique backdrop pictured here is a custom designed parametric wall that serves the dual purpose of separating the dining area from the staircase as well as highlighting it.

The parametric wall panel consists of geometry in a repeating and rotating three dimensional pattern. Small details like the wooden inserts occuring randomly, make the wall a showpiece in its own right.

This wall also successfully hides in plain sight, fully functional drawers and shelves in it's panels.

MASTER BEDROOM : The design brief requirements for the master bedroom included space provisions to accomodate : - A bar counter - A refrigerator - Seating area - Dressing room - Luggage rack - TV panel and storage in addition to the usual bed, wardrobe, bathroom etc.

Using a minimalist theme and shades of blue, the furniture was customized in such a way that the bar counter and mini fridge were hidden in plain sight.

The side seating was lifted off the ground to make the floor area more clutter free and spacious.

MASTER BEDROOM : Cleverly hidden behind the TV panelling is the wardrobe and dressing area. Its positioning has been kept next to the bathroom and independent of the main bedroom area, forming a private nook of its own.

Using false ceiling levels and wall colours work as a good segregation of different zones in the room. Mirrors on bed adjacent walls make the master bedroom appear even more voluminous than it already is.

Geometric lines - vertical on the walls, horizontal on the ceiling and diagonal on the mirrors and furniture elements make up the overall look and design of the entire space.

MASTER BEDROOM & BATHROOM : An industrial style sliding channel and sliding door to step into the master bathroom not only works as a space saver, but also gives it that extra design edge. Laser cut panels on the sliding door accentuate its appearance.

In continuation with the industrial theme, a huge round mirror supported by a steel frame is kept floating at a distance from the wall. Walls in the dry area of the bathroom are divided in two parts. The top half retains the blue colour of the room and is highlighted by means of a running strip of light in a wooden insert. The blue colour is carried forward in the ceiling as well, moving away from typically white bathroom ceilings.

MASTER BATHROOM

ENTERTAINMENT ROOM & BAR : An increasingly popular trend for spacious homes these days is a good entertainment room with a home theatre system, and a bar area.

The walls have all been decked in thick fabric panelling in alternating shades of red to ensure sound proofing for the home theatre system. Lounge like two tiered seating for comfortable viewing in plush velvet has been custom designed. Despite being ginormous, these seats can be wheeled around and are easy to maintain that way.

The bar counter has adequate and deep storage. A fixed metal frame under the ceiling and directly over the counter top has hanging glass bottle planters with live creepers to add sculptural and artistic value in the entertainment room overall.

The given client brief was an architecture project to design a weekend home on the bank of the Mahi river, with an infinity pool as the central loci. This home would be used as a place for relaxation and also a number of social gatherings.

Our conceptual idea was to have major spaces of the home overlooking the infinity pool and thus also the river. In order to achieve this, we split the floors into multiple levels. The levels unfold in a descent of stepped terraces ultimately leading down to the pool deck right up to the waterfront.

Keeping in mind the concept of having main areas of the house overlooking the riverfront, a seating area with a sloping window was designed for the master bedroom.

Breaking down the huge volume of the house, we created a journey of discovery through multiple visual experiences, beginning right from the entrance.

Metal pergolas with landscaping, juxta-positioning of bricks and concrete on the façade, circular cutouts in the fairly squarish geometry, all of these merge to form a picturesque weekend home.

PROPOSAL STAGE : FARMHOUSE AT SEVASI

PANTH FINMART PVT. LTD. SARABHAI CAMPUS, VADODARA | GUJARAT(2019) Interior Design for a financial services branch office in Vadodara Parametric entrance wall

The design for this office was conceptualized in sharp, angular geometry.

The director's cabin has been separated with style by introducing a geometric triangulating pattern and linear bands in glass and wood. Set against a formal azure blue shade, these sharp cuts add a dynamic energy to the work-space. A bold play of vertical and diagonal lines, proportionately spaced apart and juxtaposed with profile lighting perfectly accentuate the back-wall of the director's cabin. The same theme is carried forward in the modesty panel design for the stone table . A geometric triangulation pattern with striped glass for the azure blue partition wall ensure adequate privacy but with style.

MARUTI FINCORP SARABHAI CAMPUS, VADODARA | GUJARAT(2018-19) Interior Design for a financial services branch office in Vadodara

Strongly favouring confident graphics in terms of signage, in this project, the office number, 409, and company brand name have been embossed on the entrance door in the same monochromatic navy blue shade. The wooden door handle is carved out to form the company logo. Separately, they are all pieces of a puzzle, coming together and blending in to form a striking and memorable entrance.

The entrance to this office features an angular reception desk in navy blue, keeping up with the overall theme. The detail comprises of asymmetric and diagonal grooves branching out from equidistant vertical strips of metallic gold.

The director's cabin features an open display case - shelves, in bold navy blue with metallic gold supports. The shutters are accessorised with polished, bright gold knobs.

The colour scheme of white, grey and navy blue was a constant right from the beginning and we worked our way up to the design theme of minimal surfaces, and simple geometric shapes. The storage knobs are all done in the same detail.

In keeping with the concept of uneven shading and juxtaposition of textures in the office design project, we visualised a gigantic 24 inch (600 mm) wall clock which is 3/4th concrete and 1/4th navy blue paint. We aligned the vertical line on the clock with the groove on the wall.

The shutter detail for filestorage in the director's cabin has been done in contrasting colour and laminate texture. The contrast is further enhanced and accessorised with brightly polished gold knobs.

STERLING CHEMICALS ALKAPURI, VADODARA | GUJARAT (2019) Interior Design Renovation of an office space.

The idea behind renovating this office space came from a very basic requirement of adding more file storage.

Not wanting to break away from the formal existing language of wooden paneling, a full height file cabinet was designed and colored in complementary azure blue with matching polished wooden handles.

The company name done in SS finish aluminium was highlighted against a brilliant blue background, and framed with rough cement sheet panels, at the reception and waiting areas.

The executive desks were designed in composite neutral grey stone and supported on navy blue MS legs.

AADI ITYAADI RESTAURANT VADODARA | GUJARAT(2017) Over the past year, the city of Vadodara has seen a flurry of restaurants – all designed with unique concepts based on cuisine served. For Aadi Ityaadi, the client approached us with a very clear brief in mind – design a modern style restaurant for traditional home cooked food.

A steel and glass entrance leads the customers to the restaurant’s indoor seating area.

For the walls in this area, which is longitudinal in plan, a colour palette of grey and white has been chosen.

Located on a secondary street in Alkapuri, the site presented a few natural advantages in terms of design.

The buffer space in between the restaurant indoor and the outside road has been cordoned off by a modulating high wall.

Strategically painted a confident, yet inviting red, this high wall serves as a frame in part to a wide and pivoted steel mesh entrance.

Upon entering, the street noises slowly fade away and views of the busy street are cut off by tall plants all along the inner boundary of the wall.

Custom sized Kadappa stone has been laid out in the buffer space and tables have been placed diagonally forming the restaurant’s outdoor seating.

An unobstructed charcoal grey fluted wall enables the eyes to visually traverse back and forth along the entire length of the restaurant.

Hand crafted black and white cement tiles, arranged in a particular pattern for the flooring, form a sharp contrast to the stark walls.

LA FLORA | FLOWER BOUTIQUE | FLORIST VADODARA | GUJARAT (2017) Interior and Graphic design for a local flower shop

The design for the flower shop was quite challenging, as the aim was to design not just a visually appealing display, but also a fully functional flower preparation area along the entire length of a curved wall.

The finished design used a combination of custom designed neo-geometric furniture and boats!! in tones of pastels and gold to give a classic and timeless appearance that serves as a backdrop for the bright and fresh flowers.

Teamwork

The initial concept for our design was derived from a very raw image of shards of broken ice on a very cold day in Helsinki. We envisioned the layout of the museum as planes or shards of created vistas which unfold initially from one plane and gradually grow into multileveled planes. Within the museum, moveable planes would create a lot of opportunity for interaction between the artists, exhibits and the audience. Cones of light penetrating the external skin would create an interesting illumination pattern within each space.

Winning competion entry | Street furniture camp, Vadodara 2018 DESIGN A: SAFE BOX The true measure of a ‘smart’ city also comes from how safe its inhabitants are.

No matter how safe the city, the parameter of safety can never be taken for granted, especially in dark and derelict areas.

Re-envisioning street furniture usage in a way that has not been done before, our design addresses the social issue of safety on the street.

The Safe Box, lockable on the inside and not from the outside, is intended to hold only one person at a time.

Consisting of two layers, each skin is impenetrable CPF ECP DG WUGF UJQWNF C RGTUQP ƂPF VJGOUGNXGU in the unfortunate circumstance of any physical attack or assault on the street.

Envisioned as a sturdy metal body, both the skins are perforated and hence well ventilated.

The bottom of the raised ceiling has an alarm button which starts blaring loud sounds upon being pressed; acting as a distress signal and alerting everyone in the vicinity.

It is designed to hold one person only in order to prevent mischief when the safe box is not in use.

Optionally, it can also hold a CCTV camera that can be monitored at a police station nearby.

Serving as a prototype, the simple design of the safe box is easily replicable and can be placed at various darker or unsafe pockets of the city.

IDEA AND ITS MAKING 05 June 2017

Vadodara Street Furniture Camp 2017

We were one of the selected entries in the street furniture design competition held in Vadodara in 2018, for our unique design entitled ‘safe box’. The street furniture camp intended to use up a lot of the metal scrap lying in the junkyard, taking up too much space. Since our design addressed the social issue of safety on the street, mainly for women, it generated a lot of interest in the news and print media. The gujarati newspaper clipping here is one such example of a newspaper publication. The sassy headline in gujarati translates to, “ If Romeo is stalking you, run to the safe box and press the alarm inside, so the police can come help you.” Although it was intended to be a prototype, only one ‘safe box’ has been made so far, and it has found its permanent home at Kamati baug (a huge public garden) along with the rest of the street furniture family.

Competion entry | CERA, India 2018

The concept for this quick competition design of a luxurious toilet has been derived from and strongly influenced by the pink crystal salts found naturally and in abundance in the Himalayan region.The salt is believed to have medicinal properties. This bathroom was designed to specifically have a salt heating pit. Once heated, the closed environment would allow the salt ions to waft through the air and circulate inside the whole space. The site location chosen was in the himalayan region and external form of the toilet would resemble a salt crystal. Plenty of daylight would enter through the tinted glass throwing a warm pink glow inside.

Pavilion of Protest, RIBA 2011

As a part of the live projects, I got an invaluable opportunity to work on the Pavilion of Protest project organized by ZAP architecture, and hosted at the RIBA building in London. The pavilion was designed as a protest against the rising cost of architecture education. The final design comprised of individual bars of the pavilion coming together to read the figure 88726- the exact calculated education cost and a continuous scroll of paper keeping the drawing alive by multiple architecture students.

Our design studio dedicated to ‘temporary, mobile, everlasting’ architecture inspired us to create a temporary project of our own. Using the squatters rights, we transformed an abandoned open warehouse into a temporary cinema. The makeshift seating arrangement used heavy industrial tubes, all available on the site and thermocol sheets (to protect from the cold metal pipes) were provided to each passerby rolling in to check out what was going on. A movie night to remember !

MA Design Studio, ‘TEMPORARY, MOBILE, EVERLASTING’ | University of Sheffield, 2011-12

Our studio aimed to take a critical look at the practice of temporary use in London and other cities, investigating in detail the legacy of these projects, the values created and the ultimate benefactors of the collective efforts. In person visits and a thorough study of a lot of these sites of temporary nature like Urban Physics Garden in London, The Ecobox project in Paris, Nu Hier in Rotterdam etc. helped me formulate my design research question, ‘how can tactical and creative interventions be applied to enable community driven urban design of neighbourhoods in a way that regenrates and regulates the built as well as unbuilt fabric, while reducing the gap in governance?’

Through my design project, I proposed a statement that the role of the architect needs to evolve from being a mere designer of a projector to being a facilitator or an enabler. Aside from my technical study, I also heavily criticised architects who emphasize form over functionality; expressed via medium of hand sketched cartoons. My final design sheets were a detailed analysis of the Dutch housing system, and a solution to combat the housing problems in the Netherlands, a stage wise process by reducing the dependancy on social housing associations. Inspired by the Occupy movement, a group of citizens would take over an empty plot of land and eventually build their community as a bottom up strategy.

The conclusion was that, in every architecture project, there are certain overlapping moments, which facilitate the bridging of the gap between the designer and the community. It is during such moments that the governing and the governed share an equal footing in space, time and value. These are the ENABLING MOMENTS, and are extremely crucial for the implementation of the strategy behind the design. These moments determine the success or failure of the strategy, and if addressed in the right manner can create a powerful impact that ensures a lasting legacy.

‘WE THE PEOPLE.....’ OF UNION STREET, 2012 How would we collect peoples’ stories if they are suppressed and afraid to trust anybody? How would we as designers act as messengers of peace and open up a dialogue between the feuding communities?

In order to understand this in a better way, I proposed a publication titled ‘We the People’ during the Union Press project by Public Works on Union Street in London. This ten-day project produced ten publications that explored Union Street.

My publication suggestion was to sketch a deck of playing cards about the people and places of Union Street.

The advantage of using playing cards in the context of the Union Street was that they combined the light hearted nature of a game with the more serious issues related to the street, and once displayed on the kiosk, they would become powerful tools of non verbal communication for the people in and around Union Street.

Surprisingly enough for me, people seemed to be more than willing to talk to me and pose for pictures once they realized that this was ultimately going to turn into a playing card game. The idea of a playing card game seemed more fun than intimidating and they opened up about their houses, their shops, their lives, their opinions and take on Union Street as it is today.

The playing cards gave them a platform to voice their thoughts.
