1.0 THREE RELATIONSHIPS - Point/ Line / Plane - Frame + Infill - Mass

1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE My P/L/P project focused on a criticism of Peter Eisenman’s memorial in Berlin. It was said that the memorial was created in a way so that it created confusion in the user. I thought that the orderly was in which the memorial was built did not allude to this and therefore did my own take on the memorial.

1.2 FRAME & INFILL My frame and infill project revovled around the idea of introvert and extrovert. The closed of box represents introvert and is ssupported by the the open building. The small hole alludes to the facts that although introverts are closed off they do reveal a small aspect of themselves.

1.3 MASS My mass project focused on opposites or contrast. I used the words day and night as my main contrast. One room was light and another was dark the transistion between the both was gradual. The dark room had no lighting this was due to the senses being more active when one has been inhibited

2.0 CONCEPT MASS 3D MODEL Due to its simple form, it was quite easy to create on Rhino. The main tool used was the extrude tool which allowed me to create the rectangular base. I had a bit of trouble with the cap tool, howeverr that was resolved.

3.1 SITE ANALYSIS AND CONCEPTACLE SITE ANALYSIS The site chosen for this project was the hill near the entrance of the site. This was chosen due to the open space that could be built upon and also due to the large number of people that walked through this area. This area also alluded to secrets as it was visible from the minute you stepped onto site, however the view was obsucred by the vegetation. CONCEPTACLE The conceptacle is a combination of my work that created a piece where the user had to go through obstacles in order to get to the secret and once found the user had to dwell deeper in order to find the whole secret.

3.2 CONCEPT AND SKETCH DESIGN
My original concept was to alter my conceptacle in order to create a design, however this idea did not develop as well and therefore I stopped developing. I then went on to design based on the theme of contrast. My initial design consisted of rigid forms that contrasted with the natural flow of the actual site.

3.3 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT My design development started with the overlapping of rigid shapes - squares and rectangles. This was quite a complex design and therfore to simplify it I created a ground level. This led to a large structure that didn’t quite achieve what I was after. I therefore went back to my first development and removed shapes which created a simplified version of my first design.

3.4 FINAL DESIGN DRAWINGS
My final design consisted of the overlapping rigid shapes that extruded out at different lengths. The structure was lifted from the ground by a dark conrete structure that was offset inwards to create a floating like illusion. The floorplan followed the same rule of the structure and used overlapping shapes to create an area that fulfilled the brief.

4.0 REFLECTION My experience in Earth has been quite good; I learnt quite a bit and now have a good understanding of design. I particularly enjoyed the Herring Island Project, I was able to use a lot of the skills learnt in Designing environments which were quite helpful. I found the consultation session with Scott the most informative part of the design process; it guided me to create something I didn’t believe I could achieve. The presentations of the smaller projects were quite challenging, at the start I found it difficult to present in front of people I didn’t know. But as I did more presentations it became easier and it allowed me to build up my presentation skill and prepare for the final presentation. I think I could improve in the layout of my final presentations, and also proof printing before printing the final copy. Overall I found that direct feedback and the guidance from Scott really helped to improve my skills and also realise my potential.
