Only steps away from the beautiful surf and with our toes in the sand, we were able to join hundreds of other compassionate ocean-lovers, environmentalists, artists, surfers, musicians, and even a few movie stars for the sea-side fundraiser. Attendees could watch and learn from surfboard shapers who are working with the most technologically advanced sustainable methods and environmentally friendly products and could also enjoy a great meal, have a few drinks, all while helping the cause. To further donations, there was a silent auction. Sprinkled Shawn Tomson among the attendees, we spotted actresses Daryl Hannah (actress and environmentalist) and Minnie Driver (Good Will Hunting) - who also later stepped on stage to sing a few songs, actor Anthony Michael Hall (Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles), several pro surfers, and one of the first pro-surfers ever, Shaun Tomson – who spoke later on behalf of the event. As the sun set on the Pacific and the party really got started, artist Norton Wisdom did ‘live painting’ to the music – a series of temporary paintings on a light board.

What a great set of songs EVERYONE could dance to! Kevin Whilden of Sustainable Surf fielded questions about their organization. Sustainable Surf takes an integrated “systems thinking” approach with their innovative programs and campaigns, which engage both individuals and businesses together in partnership to solve the most pressing environmental issues facing our oceans, caused most significantly by the impacts of climate change. Liz Crosson of the LA Waterkeeper was on hand to answer questions. LA Waterkeeper was founded in 1993, their mission is to protect and restore Santa Monica Bay, San Pedro Bay, and adjacent waters through enforcement, fieldwork, and community action. They work to achieve this goal through litigation and regulatory programs that ensure water quality protections in waterways throughout L.A. County. LA Waterkeeper’s Litigation & Advocacy, Marine, and Water Quality teams conduct interconnected projects that serve this mission. “It was a great time, and the donations received will be put to work to help sustain our precious ocean”.
