90265 Magazine Indian Summer 2024

A message from the

EDITOR IN CHIEF

Malibu is globally recognized as a coastal paradise catering to the affluent celebrity lifestyle, however, a little known fact is that Malibuites are true salt of the earth nature lovers.

Many are passionate environmentalists choosing this sacred land to be our home, surrounded by the majestic Santa Monica Mountains and the awe-inspiring Pacific Ocean. We are reminded daily it is our duty to protect this spiritual land.

The inspiration behind the Indian Summer issue is artist Ana Lemes, a resident of Malibu West who has created mystical, museum-worthy art pieces under the name Earth Daughter Collective. Her earthy creations are inspired by the indigenous tribes of the Amazon yet, also speak to the spirit of Malibu’s first settlers, the Chumash Indians, and their impact on our local culture.

“We do not inherit the land from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.” - Native Indian Proverb

High up in the hills of Malibu is Skydog Ranch, a sanctuary for wild horses and donkeys. Founded by former socialite Claire Staples, this inspiring story of activism led to a forever home for animals that were otherwise destined for kill pens.

Also in this issue, we are excited to feature our “brother from another mother”, a new mag in town called Surf Canyon. The scribes behind this new pub are an eclectic group of local artists and entrepreneurs who are tackling the lost art of 1970’s style storytelling with a present day community spirit. It fills a particular void with a local voice from a bygone era and we are happy to support it.

So much more to share with you in this issue as summer vibes are still on high in Malibu!

BU / WHO LOCAL ICONS

Beloved warrior, Lyon Herron, captivated our community with his strong, unbreakable spirit up until his very last breath on December 17th, 2023.

Lyon conquered everything in his path but unfortunately succumbed to the cancer that eventually took his earthly body.

“I’m so comfortable with the end of this life’s journey that I honestly am welcoming the end with open arms. I don’t want anyone to mourn me when I pass, but to celebrate the life that I lived. I am so blessed and so grateful for the life that I’ve had, I’ve been living on borrowed time for a very long time now and now it’s my souls time to move on.” he wrote on Instagram shortly before his death.

Lyon was just seven years old when he was diagnosed with a rare disease that he fought valiantly for the next two decades.

During that time, he became known as a talented surfer, moto rider and photographer leaving an incredible legacy and as he was determined to live to its fullest.

We are honored to have had Lyon as a contributor to 90265 Magazine leaving a lasting creative imprint on our pages, and our lives.

We love you Lyon! Lyon Forever.

LYON HERRON 1992-2023

BU / WHO LOCAL ICONS

Lyon’s legacy lives on in the Devocean issue of 90265 Magazine, forever imprinted in our minds and souls.

On most days, you can find artist Ana Lemes creating her earthy art pieces for her brand Earth Daughter Collective in the studio of the west Malibu home she shares with her photographer husband Steven, and teenage son Ryder.

Each one-of-a-kind museum-worthy functional art piece possesses a unique spirit much like the artist who creates them. 90265 magazine talked with Lemes about the passion behind her latest collection and what’s next for her awe-inspiring organic brand.

90265: What inspired you to start Earth Daughter Collective?

AL: The textile sculpture I created is inspired by indigenous headdresses from the Amazon. I wanted to combine contemporary textile techniques with the beauty and meaning of these headdresses to convey a message of appreciation and respect for indigenous culture. Additionally, working with clay has been incredibly therapeutic for me, and it allowed me to develop a new skill while exploring a different way to use my hands. I enjoy creating unique pieces that capture the essence of organic forms.

90265: What is your design process?

AL: My design process is intricate and time-consuming. It takes about 4-6 hours a day for a week to finish a textile piece. I apply techniques such as macrame, sewing, and assembly to create the Cocar.

90265: Let’s talk about the materials you use and the significance behind them.

AL: I primarily use natural materials like natural fibers, yarn, shells, and feathers. I intentionally avoid synthetic materials to maintain an organic and blended look with the elements. For my ceramic pieces, I love using wild clay and often incorporate elements such as ash and driftwood. I believe that art has the power to not only inspire but also nurture a deeper connection with our planet.

90265: Tell us about your background.

AL: I was born in Brazil and grew up in the small town of Tupã. The name Tupã means "creator of the universe" in Guarani mythology. In this quaint town, where every street is named after an Amazon tribe, I found a fitting backdrop for a life filled with creativity and Brazilian culture.

I was raised by my grandma, who infused in me a love for crafting. From a young age, I learned everything from cooking to making intricate crafts, a tradition that runs deep in my family.

90265: What led you to become an artist?

AL: Creativity has always been my second nature. Growing up in Brazil with my grandma and aunts, everything was hands-on. It was just natural for me to create. I continually explore different mediums, from painting and woodwork to clay and fibers. I enjoy foraging in nature for materials, finding inspiration in the natural world around me.

90265: What does a typical day look like for you?

AL: My day starts with ensuring my teenage son is ready for school. Afterward, I head to the gym to recharge and work on myself. Returning home, I take care of household chores, and then I dive into my art, balancing my roles as a mom, wife, and artist. I'm incredibly fortunate to have my art studio at home, allowing me to seamlessly blend my creative endeavors with family life.

THE Spirit OF POINT DUME

The 30th annual Point Dume Fourth of July parade this year went on with a bang thanks to the efforts of Malibu locals whose dedication to this tradition continues year after year.

The parade started more than three decades ago with 100 people, and has now grown to more than 500 residents in attendance.

Volunteers from the LA County Sheriff’s Department and the CERT team along with LA County Fire Station 71 were on hand to support the event.

Leading the charge was parade organizer and Parks and Rec Commisioner Alicia Peak, along with Paul Major (PDCSD founding member), Pamela Ulich (CERT), and Malibu Elementary PTA.

Parks and Rec commissioner and parade organizer Alicia Peak announcing the winning float at the 30th Annual Point Dume Fourth of July Parade.

“Malibu has a great community and the best place to see this on display is at the yearly 4th of July parade. I found out last minute that the parade wasn’t going to happen so in two weeks with the help of the city of Malibu, VOPs, CERT, MES PTA, and Ashton Bridges we made it happen. We worked hard to bring it back to pre pandemic times, creating a third space for community to come together and connect. We were lacking volunteers to truly reach that vision; but it was a great step back to what the event use to be! My three children ages 9 and 7 year old twins were my big helpers and I really couldn’t have done it without them.

It really does take a village to put on events like this. Next year it would be great to have more volunteers to run carnival games, help with set up, clean up and fundraise!” - Parks and Rec Commissioner Alicia Peak

In early Jan/Feb 2025, parade organizers will begin their efforts to get donors, permits, PTA, & volunteers lined up ahead of time + bring back a band performance on the blacktop, food trucks allowed on the grounds, community picnic, more games for the kids, prizes for top parade floats, all in the spirit of community involvement.
