INITIAL IMPROVEMENTS - PHASE 1
ADAPTING TO 5 FOOT RISE - PHASE 2
By 2120, 1/5 of Boston’s downtown will be underwater or under threat from fierce weather. Faced with this challenge, we propose the following strategies for the 100 Acres site to make a community that is not just persistent but pleasant to live in.
MAKE IT MODULAR Levees, drop structures, and break walls require lots of upfront investment. They often destroy ecological flows and could also diminish views. We propose a simple modular approach that could be carried out as individual properties are developed. We would cut soil from one part of a threatened site and fill on another, raising its elevation above the rising sea levels. Over time, as sea levels rise, a delta would form. Light breezes across the water would cool the neighborhood during expected heat waves. MAKE IT ADAPTABLE The area where the land is cut would initially be used for community gardens, and streets. As the sea level rises, community gardeners could switch from farming vegetables to farming fish like the native cod—reinforcing a local seafood culture threatened by overfishing. Overtime as streets became flooded during high tide, the area would become a pedestrian campus. Emergency vehicles, delivery trucks, and those with disabled parking placards could drive through the site at a slow pace on generously wide promenades.
MAKE IT PEDESTRIAN AND TRANSIT-ORIENTED Underground parking would be difficult on this site as sea levels rise, so the development will be pitched primarily to those interested in transit-oriented living. This could also encourage people to lower their carbon footprints, in an effort to avoid the more catastrophic warming predictions. For those who still want the convenience of a car, self-driving vehicles may make that more convenient. They could drop people off at the edge of the campus, and then continue on to a parking garage just off site, on land that is less valuable. MAKE THE LANDSCAPE MULTIFUNCTIONAL AND INVITING TO OTHER SPECIES The landscape in this new development serves protective, productive, ecological, and recreational purposes. New islands may help to buffer storm surges, and also provide habitat for birds and marine life. Vegetable gardens on roofs and in the future flood zone recycle rainwater collected from paved areas. A water play area that felt almost integrated with the delta at high tide (but is actually separated from it) would become a ice skating rink in the winter months. A swimming pool in the delta would become a giant hot tub during the winter months. Meanwhile, wetland areas would provide habitat for a diverse selection of mammals, birds, and benthic invertebrates. Our design would provide opportunities for observing birds and marine life from a promenade or in a kayak.
MAKE IT RESILIENT, BUT NOT JUST RESILIENT All of the buildings finished floor elevations are above 9.89 feet (NAVD88), the expected 100-year storm surge at Mean Higher High Water with five feet of sea level rise. However, there is a great deal of uncertainty about how high sea levels will rise and how high storms will surge in the next 100 years. To be resilient in the face of this uncertainty, the first floor of each building is built slightly higher than the others and is sealed off from them. It is designed to let water flow through it during future storm surges and to allow for the raising of its finished floor elevation over time. But these are not merely structures on stilts. To create a lively pedestrian sphere, the buildings have lively first floors. Glass doors that roll up into the ceiling keep the heat in during the winter and secure the property when the businesses are closed. During the summer, they open, and cafĂŠs and displays spill out. The finishes used on the first floor would be water repellent, and mobile shelves filled with merchandise could be locked up and moved to common rooms upstairs before storms hit.
EAST BUND OF HUAN GPU RIVER International Competetion Shanghai Lujiazui 2016 Site: Nantong, China Group work NOMINATION
SHANGHAI BACK TO THE RIVER Shanghai is one of the most modern, attractive, dynamic cities in China. As we all know, rivers are the cradle of the Chinese nation. And the Huangpu River, which runs through the whole city of Shanghai, has a complex and dynamic relationship with the city, not only offering opportunities for activities, transportation, and distinct urban habitat, but also bringing flooding and environmental concern. Like a spectrum, riverfront landscape design can extend its influence beyond its site limitation. It can educate citizen’s perception of how the river can perform to improve the living environment. Nowadays, due to administration management, nature or facilities, there are several gaps along the east river bank of the Huangpu River. Also, lacking of different riverfront activities and monotonous existing riverfront landscape are other majors issues. From the central business district Lujiazui to the heavily in use waterfront area of South Pier and finally to the urban leftover space Yaohua green space, we think connecting the gaps by riverfront landscape and programs design, which includes reconstructing bank edge, increasing open spaces and their varieties, enhancing habitat environment quality, will have great impact on east riverfront revitalization.
LUJIAZUI Located at one of the Shanghai busiest area, a place where need to be a world-class riverfront with various civic activities.
We have categorized three prototypes for the east riverfront of the Huangpu River. These three different catalytic examples of designing around the three distinct existing conditions enhance social, cultural and natural performance. As a goal, they can be applied to other areas along the riverbank as prototype design.

The site of South Pier is now merely used as a commuting pier. It lacks public open space and most of the area is used as parking lots. The bike trail and pedestrian path are disconnected because of the existing building, closed pier area and vertical flood control wall. This poorly designed waterfront environment are blocking local from accessing the Huangpu River. Overall, keeping the functions of the pier space, redesigning the existing structure and landscape, solve the problems of disconnectivity and inaccessibility. It makes this place into a neighborhood node for the surrounding residents to live, work, and play.

Yaohua site is an open lawn, which lacks of biodiversity, urban development and civic activities between the city grid and the Huangpu River. Our design proposal is turning Yaohua green space to a bio-diversity and self-efficient flood control zone with riparian habitat reconstruction, recreation spaces, and most importantly, educating people’s perception about the riverfront biodiversity. It is not a landscape to be wiped clean but a cultural landscape to let the citizen to understand relationship between nature and sustainable urban development. Our design provides layers of vegetation that let the site self-evolve, emerge to address the difficult ecological restoration challenges within and beyond the site.

Constructed wetland, retention ponds, constructed intertidal zone are located at the level, which is closed to the river, to create a tidal riparian habitat for birds and other wildlife. The level near the city development is the dense vegetation area. It will become a green buffer to create a smooth transition zone between the city and the site. And our designed platforms coordinating with street plans laying out offices, green spaces, and housing that are designed for walkability and connection between our site and the city grid. The main pathway and activity areas including boardwalk, bike trail, lawn mount are set on the level between the other two levels. As a whole, this incorporated green infrastructure is terraced down to the Huangpu River to meet different tidal conditions, improve local storm water management and enhance environmental quality for both citizens and wildlife.

Recreation Public spaces at three levels and the elevated platform bring in different experience from natural exploring to community interactivities. With the change of the environment by tidal levels and vegetation, this site become a place for citizen to enjoy the diverse urban ecology.
Yaohua site is an open lawn with less biodiversity and no civic activities. There is no connection either between the city and the riverfront or along the east riverbank.
Proposal - Diversify
A multi-layer space provides a urban ecology environment for both citizen and wildlife. It also solves the problems of the connectivity, storm water management and other environmental and social issues.

Exceptions to Height Exceptions to structure height for such items as solar collectors, rooftop features including radio and receiving antennae and parapets or firewalls are permitted.
Landscaping Landscaping is generally required for uses that are located adjacent to residentially zoned lots. Landscaping is also required along designated streets, as provided by the Industrial Streets Landscaping Plan.
Parking Parking is required for all use. Venting Venting of odors, vapors, smoke, cinders, dust, gas, and fumes must be vented a minimum of 10’ above grade and away from residential uses. Transportation Concurrency Proposed uses in industrial zones must meet transportation concurrency level-of-service standards. View Corridors Lots within the shoreline district are generally required to provide a view corridor in accordance with the Shoreline Master Program. For lots partially within the shoreline district, a view corridor is required for that portion of the lot outside the shoreline district, if the shorelines portion of the lot is required to provide a view corridor under the Shoreline Master Program.

General Industrial 1 (IG1) Typical Land Uses: General and heavy manufacturing, commercial uses, subject to some limits, high impact uses as a conditional use, institutional uses in existing buildings, entertainment uses other than adult, transportation and utility services, and salvage and recycling uses. The intent of the IG1 zone is to protect marine and rail-related industrial areas from an inappropriate level of unrelated retail and commercial uses by limiting these uses to a density or size limit lower than that allowed for industrial uses. General Industrial 2 (IG2) Typical Land Uses: Same as IG1. The intent of the IG2 zone is to allow a broad range of uses where the industrial function of an area is less established than in IG1 zones, and where additional commercial activity could improve employment opportunities and the physical condition of the area, without conflicting with industrial activity. Industrial Buffer (IB) Typical Land Uses: Light and general manufacturing, commercial use subject to some limits, some transportation services, entertainment uses other than adult, institutions generally in existing buildings, salvage and recycling uses. The intent of the Industrial Buffer is to provide an appropriate transition between industrial areas and adjacent residential zones, or commercial zones having a residential orientation and/or a pedestrian character. ndustrial Commercial (IC) The intent of the Industrial Commercial zone is to promote development of businesses which incorporate a mix of industrial and commercial activities, including light manufacturing and research and development, while accommodating a wide range of other employment activities

KELLOGG ISLAND SITE PHASING STRATEGY Based on the analysis, the intertidal around Kellogg island is very rich and tones of species grow in this area. It is a good habitat for sandpipers, salmon, and different wild life. In the short term, focus on maintain and complete the habitat, and not allow human being to get to the island. In the long term, limit the number of people to close to the island every day, and people will have chance to learn and enjoy the natual.

VIBRANT WATERFRONT COMMUNITY UWLA – Eco Urbanism Studio 2013 Fall : Catalytic Landscapes / Emergent Sites Site: South Park, Seattle Individual work
The South Park full of the history memories that people had been relied on the Duwamish River. Nowadays, even though the park still be surrounded by bunch of ships, the connection between people and water is getting farther and farther. Resident avoid any interactions with the riverfront, they don’t trust the river, the water be seen as a symbolism of dangerous, even though they live nearby the river‌
PURPOSE Reconsidering about how important is water to the human and creatures. Trying to recreate the connection between Duwamish River and community, and trying to create an accessible river area. Also thinking about how to create different activities and bring people back to the river area.
EXISTING Route Sidewalk
Bike
Grid
Bus Route
Street Ends
Few people use the street ends since those buildings around street ends are private and there are no enough space for people to hang in there now, even though the streets are public for everybody. Therefore, provide a complete function space would be very attractive.
HOW Extension Extend the street into the river area, and recreate the new route for people to walk along the Duwamish River, also guide people to access to the river from the community. Based on the new route, it connects to the four different spots. Based on the different situation and environment around those spaces, various kind of recreation would be generated. Soft coastline Change the shape of coastline. Provide more habitats for creatures and plants by the different sizes of space that would be created by native shape. Moreover, it would be much easier to create different activities space for people to use along the shoreline. Also, soft coastline can decrease the speed of waves. Therefore, water will have more time be filtered over the years.
8
Four different spots along the Duwamish Rive be connected by the new route, Waterway Park, fishing pier, public pier, and civic plaza park. They provide various kind of recreation for community and visitors.

Civic Plaza Park This park is nearby the new bridge and the commercial area, based on the environment, I provide a civic plaza in the end of the 14th Ave, also create a wetland area and beach. Not only deal with the river cleanup, also provide the educational function for people watching and learning. People can buy the tickets or take a cup of coffee from the semi-open public facility, then go along the boardwalk to take a boat.

Redesign the Waterway park Redesign the topography from a big lawn to a flat slope. Since the street nearby the park is a subbasin, the groundwater would be collected and flow into this park, then goes down to the filtering system and the wetland. Keep the existing activities, for example, the BBQ, the picnic, and the exhibition. Also provide more ecological function to filter the ground water from the residential and industrial area by topography. Rain Water

Goal It is an important area for ALL people, including students, residents, staffs, and homeless. Everybody could use and share this space. It would provide more activities, and people enjoy and relax in here. Coffee shops, benches area, big plaza, and community library would be established. Those new elements will constitute different kind of places, including quite space, lively space. The library has multiple functions, not only provides books, also some tools for planting. Permaculture would be a good concept be applied in here for producing and filtering, and produces would be offered for lowincome and homeless. People can see the process of cultivation and filter outside directly. Responding to the indoor-learning of library, it would be an outdoor-learning classroom. Tree houses (the piece of buildings) not only provide people to sleep, to relax, to see the stars, it also be a house for creatures, and create an eco-tone here.
