Words from the Publisher Publisher Kathleen Sanchez Here we are with another great issue of the magazine. Hope you enjoy.

Marketing Director Chris Scott

We have a lot of news to report. When I was a little girl, and during most of my life, my Dad always told me, just as he did my brothers, to “Go big or stay home.” Okay, let’s go big: our current circulation of 30,000 will soon be increased to 67,000. The magazine will then be delivered to every single family home (not apartments & Condos) in Rancho Cucamonga, Claremont and Upland. We will then be the largest magazine in the Inland Empire! We will give you more information when we set the final date. This month you will notice that we have a new dining guide for you. The guide will tell you locations, operating hours and whether the restaurant serves breakfast, lunch or dinner, has a bar, happy hour, catering, take out, banquets, reservations, outdoor seating, and whether you can bring your dog with you to hang out while you eat. This guide will give you as much information as you need to decide to where to dine and relax. This month we bring you some great articles. We have a piece on the biggest and most deadly shootout in FBI history. Two special agents were killed, several hospitalized and even more injured. This shootout caused the FBI to reevaluate many procedures for dealing with dangerous suspects and what type of weapons they carried, as this incident left the FBI outgunned by the criminals they were trying to arrest. We bring you the details of the Lewis family Playhouse’s new 2013 Season. We have listed all of its coming shows and we hope you find this information helpful when you are deciding where to go out with the family. The Car Family of Alta Loma has a great review in this issue on the Infiniti G35 Hybrid. This is a great car, with great gas mileage, and the Car Family gives you what you need to decide whether to run out and add it to your fleet. We hope you have a great month and enjoy this month’s issue. Remember, shop local and support our community.

The man fled and led police on a pursuit, which eventually took to the east 210 freeway Three mailboxes have been destroyed since Saturday June 2 by handmade explosive devices in Claremont. The man is described as an 18 to 20-yearold white male approximately 5”8 tall with red or blonde hair. A 46-year-old Claremont man drove off the side of the road by Webb Canyon, crashing into a tree. An innocent by standard of the incident picked up the man and drove him to his home. After police investigated the crash the man was found to be under the influence. A 39-year-old man driving a Honda drove off the road in the 1200 block of Base Line and onto a sidewalk, crashing and tearing off a fire hydrant. Earlier in the month of June, Claremont Village had its 3rd annual Brews and Blues festival take place in the heart of Claremont.

Brewery from Escondido, and Dale Brothers Brewery from Upland, as well as manymore paired alongside with cuisine from local eateries.

Over 30 businesses participated in this year’s community event along with 14 bands that provided live entertainment throughout the entire night. Every year the event is described as a “toe tappin’, beer tastin’ walk in the village,” and that was exactly what it was during the festival. Entertainment and live music played throughout the village as food and beverage tasting sites were provided for all attendees.

Whether it was from walking to different food sites, grabbing a brew, or just listening to great tunes, it was hard for anyone not to call it a successful night.

The Claremont Village was flooded with traffic from families, groups, and couples as they were all eager to join in the festivities. The event proved to be a big hit as it featured tasty suds provided by Ballast Point Brewery from San Diego, Stone

Many businesses and residents of Claremont were happy with the outcome seeing as how a portion of the proceeds from the festival are going to local community nonprofit organizations such as the Pomona Valley Hospital Auxiliary, Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, and Shoes that Fit. It was the perfect way to spend time with your loved ones and friends to officially kick off your summer. If you missed this event, don’t worry there will be more to come!

Speed Limit Increases

Stricter state regulations have forced city officials of Claremont to re-evaluate the current speeds. Radar surveys are used to report prevailing speeds, accident records, and conditions that are not apparent to the driver and are are completed every 7 to 10 years. Seeing as how Claremont’s last Radar Speed Survey was completed back in 2005, there are now regulation changes that need to be made in order to comply with states current standards. The speed limit in the state of California requires that the speed on the street is as close as possible to the speed that 85 percent of the traffic actually travels either at or slightly below. Many of the city’s streets are not fulfilling the current standards and therefore many speed citations have not been upheld in traffic court. This means that changes are needed for law enforcement to give Claremont police officers enforceable speed limits. To meet the current and strict standards of the state of California, a proposed 5 mph increase will be added on 11 city streets in Claremont, including Mt. Baldy Road, Scripps Drive and College Avenue. Many residents have already voiced certain concerns that the proposed changes will affect speeds near local schools seeing as how several streets increased from 25 to 30 mph. Residents of Claremont are worried and feel that the increase in speed limit is going to make streets more dangerous for children, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Keeping in mind of all the residents’ concerns, the city has taken steps to reduce the speeds as much as possible within the rule of the law. The increases are a frustration to the entire community and the state speed regulations have created controversy not only at a local government level, but at a state level problem as well.

Shoes that fit in Claremont

One local business owner started a program in 1992 that has now gone nationwide helping thousands of children each year. The program is called Shoes That Fit, and is oriented towards providing children with new shoes for the school year. The purpose of this program is help kids focus on school and their education, instead of their life situation or looks. The program works by connecting local businesses that donate to Shoes That Fit, with schools in their area. Children “in need” are determined by their school. Once picked, the child is sized to get shoes that fit properly. Parents receive letters informing them about the program and kids are given their generous gifts in private. This is a year round program and everything is done through donations. This July, Shoes That Fit is hosting a local event which takes place at The Village. Businesses in The Village, along with community members, will take part in The Backpack Project. Participants are given an

empty backpack with a child’s name and shoes size. They then fill the backpack with supplies and a pair of shoes for the upcoming school year. Claremont’s goal is to fill 300 backpacks this year. This is a great way to get involved and make a child happy. For more information and to find out how you can help, visit their website at shoesthatfit.com or Call Susan Pearson at The Bath Workshop (909) 625-3417. More information about this event is also on our Claremont events page.

Hiking and Cycling and Bears! Oh my!

It’s that time of year again. This summer weather brings out all kinds of animals and creatures, including bears. Bears have been spotted around the Claremont Wilderness Park. They have been coming down to find food and water. Encounters are more likely to happen in the early morning hours and evenings. If you spot a bear in this area, do not approach it for any reason. A good way to avoid encounters with bears, or any other animals, is to keep your local parks and backyards clean and free from garbage or litter. If bears think they can find food easily, they will continue to return to that location. Here are a few simple steps to take to stay safe while on hikes or cycling during the summer. Go in groups when hiking or cycling. Be sure to make noise so any animal in the area knows your there. If you decide to go on a trail by yourself, let

your keys jingle around or have bells on you to make noise. Making noise will help reduce the chance of encountering an animal. Always be aware of your surroundings, you do not want to be taken by surprise if you do come across an animal. It is good to have pepper spray on hand in case of emergencies (be sure you know how to use it before spraying). Some other animals to keep an eye out for during this time are snakes, deer, opossums, skunks, raccoons, tarantulas, coyotes and mountain lions. This does not mean you cannot enjoy the great outdoors. Summer time is all about being outside. This is just a reminder that we share the wilderness trails with wild animals. So when doing any outdoor activities be safe and be mindful of your surroundings if you’re in or near a wilderness area.

A male called concerned about his neighbor because he hadn’t seen him in a week. Officers arrived and discovered the neighbor deceased. A death investigation is being conducted. Callers reported two motorcycles have crashed into each other. Officers arrived and arrested one of the drivers for driving under the influence. A couple was arguing while driving. The male driver failed to stop at a red light and struck another car injuring the other driver. The couple ran away, but was located by responding officers. The male presented false identification and was arrested. A mobile phone business was burglarized and a large amount of property was stolen. The thieves managed to defeat the alarm system.

Upland is known as the city of gracious living. But, after hitting rough times with the economy, many families and individuals have been forced to leave their homes and livelihood. Residents of Upland are now questioning their security and safety as homeless individuals are inhabiting local parks. Many have voiced certain concerns to city officials about the rising problem of homelessness in parks, more specifically homelessness in Memorial Park. Officials are now taking matters into their own hands as they are now executing a plan of action to deal with the unwanted activity of litter, broken beer bottles, fecal matter, and trespassing. These are only some some of the conditions in and around Memorial Park caused by an inflow of homeless people Nearby neighborhoods of Memorial Park raised the important issue of

security. There is no question as to why, seeing as how some residents have found homeless people in their very own properties. Upland police officers are now increasing security and patrol in the highly inhabited park. Making sure that if any illegal activity is found, there are going to do their best to make sure they assess the situation properly. According to officials, they are going to make sure not to violate the individuals’ rights and that homeless people will be able to spend the day in the park and leave at night when it closes. Homelessness is not just a problem in Upland, but nationwide, and pervasive in Los Angeles and other counties. It is difficult for cities to assess the situation without funding and the man-power behind it, this includes Upland.

inside upland Colonies Crossroads Development

It is hard for the residents of Upland to not notice all of the construction activity taking place in the Colonies Crossroads.

Ongoing Battle with Medical Marijuana Dispensaries in Upland The issue of legalizing marijuana has always been a tricky subject. With such a controversial topic, it is hard to evaluate the situation of medical marijuana dispensaries especially when legal actions are now becoming involved. The most prominent medical marijuana dispensary in Upland has been G3 Holistic, which has been in a legal dispute with the city for 2 years now. Attorneys representing G3 claim the city is not allowed to ban dispensaries through zoning alone, while the city believes it can. The case is still an ongoing process and will be heard by the state Supreme Court.

unwanted medical marijuana dispensaries opening in the city and city official are now taking into consideration a new approach. Hundreds and thousands of dollars have already been spent on the fight to close local dispensaries and now the law enforcement is aiming to enforce a policy to fine dispensaries every day that they in violation of city code. They are aiming to establish administrative fines for non-conforming or violations of the municipal code which would include the land-use violations regarding medical marijuana.

Many residents are hopeful that these actions will have an alleviating effect on illegal conduct and will cause local medical marijuana dispensaries to leave the city. Although the fines may require court action, which may cost the city time and money, it is the safety and security of the city that matters most. Until then, the city of Upland has contin- The current policy of fining the dispensaued facing an ongoing battle with ries is a step in the right direction. Because of the city’s zoning, this prohibits medical marijuana dispensaries from operating. Over the last couple of years, Upland’s legal actions against several dispensaries has cost the city nearly $500,000 in legal fees.

The new development is taking place over a new 200,000 square foot phase on the corner of Campus Avenue and 19th Street. The Colonies in Upland has proven to be highly popular among the community and now with the development of a much needed gas station and mini-mart right above the 210 freeway and Campus Avenue, the area will become highly trafficked. As for the Colonies Crossroads, many large retail stores will be expected to open by 2013. Among these stores you will see is a 35,000 square foot Nordstrom Rack, Toys R Us, Babies R Us, T.J. Maxx, G Stage, and Tilly’s. Despite the economy, Colonies Crossroads is still 95% occupied and already contains major anchors such as Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, Dick’s Sporting Goods, LA Fitness, Office Depot, Kohl’s, Albertsons and Home Depot. Who could say “no” to more retail stores and gas stations? While some Upland residents are excited to see the developments take place and are eager to bring more retail stores in the center, especially a gas station, there are still many others that are concerned with the traffic in the populated area.

inside rancho cucamonga The Zoloft defense Goes Down in Flames SUV. He was immediately arrested. It turned out Orban had been drinking with Jeffrey Jelinek, a state prison guard who pleaded guilty to participation in the crimes and agreed to testify against Orban. Orban was convicted and claimed he was “mentally unconscious” from having taken Zoloft and therefore not legally responsible for his actions. The jury found last week that Orban knew exactly what he was doing when he raped and tormented the young mother.

Bad Boy Report Sheriff's deputies arrested two men in Rancho Cucamonga after they found three sets of stolen 3-row seats in their van. Sheriff's officials say there has been a flood of SUV break-ins to steal third-row seats in Rancho Cucamonga the last several months. This case began when officials received a phone call regarding a burglary. When deputies arrived they saw the suspects' van. The van was stopped at a gas station and deputies observed the victim's third-row seats, along with two other rows of seats. They later located two other victims whose cars had been burglarized. A Hesperia man arrested for his connection to a Rancho Cucamonga fatal shooting was sentenced to one year in jail Thursday. Keaton McGuire, 25, accepted the district attorney’s offer and pled guilty to possessing an assault weapon. Judge Michael Sachs sentenced him to three years of probation, which includes the one year jail term. McGuire was initially charged with being an accessory and manufacturing or transportation of assault weapon. McGuire was arrested in December for being an accessory to the shooting death of 25-year-old William Merrill. Anthony Wagner of Montclair is accused of killing Merrill in Rancho Cucamonga in October.

Orban, who served in the U.S. Marines, now faces a life sentence.

A jury found that a former police detective who blamed the antidepressant Zoloft for his behavior was sane when he abducted and raped a waitress at gunpoint.

More Surveillance Cameras in Rancho Cucamonga

The case started, the jury found, when Orban abducted a young mother who had just left her job at the Dave & Buster's at the Ontario Mills shopping mall in April, 2010. The woman was grabbed by Orban and forced into a vehicle. Orban drove the victim to a business parking lot in Fontana where he choked, slapped, punched and gagged the victim by sticking his police revolver in her throat. He ordered the victim at gun point to orally copulate him and took pictures of her doing so with his cell phone. After Orban left the vehicle, the victim bolted from the SUV and asked a worker at a nearby business to call the police. When the police arrived, they did not find Orban but did find Orban's Westminster Police service revolver left in the

The City of Rancho Cucamonga is now taking higher safety precaution measures by using more surveillance cameras. The city hopes that by placing more surveillance cameras in highly populated public areas near Victoria Gardens, that this will prevent crime and help catch lawbreakers. With more eyes on the street, police officers hope that the use of more cameras will allow them to focus on areas

inside rancho cucamonga where mischief may be taking place. This would allow suspects to be recorded and seen on site even before officials arrive on scene. In the first phase, Rancho Cucamonga Sheriff’s department will install 20 more cameras in addition to the surveillance cameras already placed in the city. In the future, they hope to expand thenumber of surveillance cameras once they receive more funding as well as complete the search to find a company to provide the equipment. So far the project has been funded through grants. Once a vendor company is found, officials will immediately be installing the new surveillance cameras. With this in mind, make sure to keep a look out and smile. You’re on camera in Rancho Cucamonga.

450 Participants Show Support to Little Heart Warriors

Four mothers joined together to start a non-profit organization called Little Heart Warriors. This amazing group of mothers joined together by the common bond they share of having children who suffer from Congenital Heart Defects. They sought out to share their story with others and aimed to educate their community all the while helping many other families that are going through the same journey with Congenital Heart Disease.

When they planned their first event, the group of mothers had only expected 150 to attend. Better yet, their run/walk event in Rancho Cucamonga drew a large crowd of 450 people thus over exceeding their expectations. The founders were blown away by the turn-out and couldn’t express the amount of gratitude from the support system they have. The event was created to benefit families of children with Congenital Heart Disease which is said to be the most common birth defects in the United States. It was put together to raise money for families that are in the hospital, whether they are waiting for surgery or recovering from surgery, waiting for transplants. The event held 450 participants that all joined together for the 5k run and 1k walk as a way to show support for their friends, families, and fellow neighbors in need. Many claimed it was a great way to show they care. Families involved with the non-profit organization had taken notice of the support at the fundraiser and claimed the Little Heart Warriors made a big difference to their family and other in similar situations. This event not only showed a big-turn out but also raised with raffle sales between $8,000 to $10,000 for families in need. This goes to show that there is a lot of support from the Rancho Cucamonga community to and that many are getting involved to make these families feel as though they are not alone. Many people felt really good abut the resukts of this event. It is hard not to smile when so many have come together to help others. People interested in further information about the nonprofit organization or in donating can find more at www.littleheartwarriors.org.

City Council Approves New Balanced Budget The City Council recently approved a balanced $63 million budget plan for the new fiscal year. The budget proposal involves a number of cutbacks, including reduced library hours. The approved general fund budget is at $63 million, which is up $311,000 from last fiscal year. The approved fire department budget is at $26 million, which is $664,870 more than last year. The approved library budget is at $4 million, which is $49,000 more than last fiscal year. The city council’s job of balancing the budget was not an easy one. The death of the city's Redevelopment Agency by Sacramento caused a general fund deficit of about $4.2 million. In order to bridge the gap officials laid off 19 employees, reassigned 10 positions, and eliminated 11 vacant positions. They've also proposed service cutbacks and program for this fiscal year. The measures were taken without the use of the city's general fund reserve, which stands at $13 million. Some of the planned cuts include: Reduction of library hours, reduction in Central Park Community Center hours on weekdays. Making these cuts and balancing the budget without raiding the city’s cash reserves.

INFINITI M35 HYBRID: You Can Have it All!

by The Car Family

This sedan flies and no one notices. After all, it is a hybrid that yielded 33 mpg in daily driving. The reality is you can get to 60 mph in just over five seconds while sitting on heated and cooled seats, surrounded by stunning leather and wood trimmed interior, and getting traffic and weather reports. Expensive, yes, at $53,700, but worth it if you love to drive, need room for five, don't like refueling costs, and enjoy understatement. At first blush, we weren't impressed. This car looked like an M 35 Infiniti and that model cost less. Sure the seats were comfortable, and the fit and finish similar to other luxury cars, but nothing really engaged the love at first site mode. We spent a full ten minutes trying to figure out what all the buttons, gauges, and other controls were before the urge to push the start button overcame our

better judgment. The rpm and speedometer pointers swung up and down. The instrument panel lighted-up and that was it. Just silence. Unnoticed at first was a small readout informing us the car was ready. So, with some hesitation, we put the car in reverse and the huge monitor flashed an image of what was behind the Infiniti. Very nice. Under electric power, we drove away. It was an eerie feeling, but it didn't last. When we turned on the air-conditioning the gas engine came to life. From that moment on it was play time. The information system provides a plethora of data and you can even adjust the accelerator pedal feel. The heated and cooled seats were the best we've tested and there was always that feeling of luxury. Overall, this was one of the few cars we have tested that we would not mind keeping. The M 35 hybrid does it all.

Mom's view: I had a difficult time trying to squeeze my hand between the seat and door to adjust the rake, lumbar and height settings. Good thing my husband didn't buy me a large diamond ring. (Marry a teacher and those things happen.) The front and side visibility were good, crash scores excellent, and it was easy to park. The exterior does not draw attention to itself, but the interior is gorgeous. There was nothing not to like in this car. The acceleration is exhilarating, the ride firm, but not harsh, and there are plenty of storage. Among the unique safety features were blind spot and lane departure warning and intervention systems, and excellent headlights and interior lighting. My only concern was the small trunk due to the battery pack. The best thing I can say it that it made me feel good, and that makes it worth every penny.

Dad's view: The Infiniti has a heavy feel, but the suspension has a sporty nature. It is an excellent combination for most drivers. Brake feel is a bit different as the Infiniti uses regenerative brakes to help recharge its batteries. One thing for certain, the car can stop in a hurry. I came upon a texting driver who, without warning, decided my lane was better. I hit the brakes hard and the Infiniti was magnificent. Very little front end dip and the ABS enabled me to steer clear. Driving into the San Bernardino Mountains brought out the best in the Infiniti. The instant power made passing slowing traffic safe. Truly a sedan for those who are looking for some fun, some substance, and good fuel economy in a safe package. Young working woman's view: The price may appear a little dear, but the standard equipment is abundant. Outside of the sophisticated hybrid system Infiniti offers iPod slots, USB integration, Bluetooth speakerphone, a six speaker stereo system, single in dash CD player and XM satellite radio. If you opt for the premium packages you own a high resolution 8-inch monitor, a Bose 5.1 audio package with speakers in the seat, and voice controls among other goodies. The

system provides you with traffic conditions around your location and alerts you to extreme weather conditions. The price is too much for me, I prefer the smaller G37 model, but when I marry right this would be on my gift list. Young working male's view: It is all about numbers. Infiniti's hybrid system uses a seven-speed automatic transmission and the drivetrain produces 360 hp at 6,500 rpm The EPA grants it ratings of 29 mpg combined. We always got better fuel numbers. The M can use the electric only mode for up to 50 percent of the time. The Infiniti has a 1.4-kwh lithium-ion battery pack that can provide acceleration up to 60 mph and be engaged up to 50 percent of driving time. There's more numbers, but the best one may be that it is a Guinness record holder for the world's fastest hybrid in a quarter mile at just over 13 seconds. Family conference: Not many cars offer you understated elegance, performance, and the ability to get over 30 mpg while it keeping you informed of world events. If that isn't enough, the Infiniti offers XM Radio, a Zagat restaurant guide, and a 9.3GB Music Box hard drive. You can have it all.

Two Dead, Three Seriously Wounded, and Two Other Agents Injured

Severely wounded and struggling to remain conscious, Special Agent Mireles stood up and began firing at the criminals as they entered and tried to escape in Dove and Grogan’s car. He killed both men even as they returned fire.

On the morning of April 11, 1986—25 years ago —one of the deadliest and most violent shoot-outs in FBI history unfolded just outside of the city of Miami. FBI agents were leading a massive manhunt for two violent bank robbers—later identified as Michael Lee Platt and William Russell Matix—who were known for using high-caliber firearms and stolen cars. They had murdered several people since the previous October, and Miami police and the FBI were closing in on them. Miami Special Agents Benjamin Grogan and Jerry Dove: —two of the eight agents ultimately directly involved in the firefight: who were riding together in one of the five pursuing Bureau cars—noticed a stolen, black Monte Carlo connected to the two robbers and began following it. Also in close pursuit and riding alone, Special Agent Richard Manauzzi tried to steer the Monte Carlo into a tree at the side of 12201 SW 82nd Avenue when he noticed one of the criminals aiming a weapon toward pursuing FBI agents. Three Bureau cars collided with the suspects and forced them off the road, but the felons opened fire.

In the end, the FBI’s casualties were higher than any shoot-out in its history: two dead, three seriously wounded, both Platt and Matix were able to continue firing their weapons at the surrounding agents. FBI guns had not stopped them. Furthermore, the killers’ weapons were more powerful and their rounds could penetrate even the armored vests that some of the agents were wearing. In response to this tragedy, the FBI made significant changes in the firepower carried by agents, the body armor they wore, and the incident response training they received. Today, the FBI continues to honor Agents Dove and Grogan—and their colleagues injured that day—for placing their lives in danger to protect their communities. As FBI Director Mueller said in a ceremony in Miami attended by former FBI Director William Webster, survivors of the shooting, and many others: “It has been said that all great things are simple, and most can be expressed in a single word: fi delity, bravery, and integrity. Honor, duty, and sacrifice. But it is no simple matter to act on such words when every second counts and life hangs in the balance.

The events unfolded quickly and horrifically. Special Agent Manauzzi was seriously wounded and immediately sought cover. Special Agent Gordon McNeill—also riding alone was wounded, but returned fire, striking Matix. Special Agents Gilbert Orrantia and Ronald Risner were pinned in their vehicle on the other side of the street; Orrantia was wounded. Special Agents Edmundo Mireles and John Hanlon had also stopped their car on the opposite side of the street and came under high-powered rifle fire as they tried to approach the felons. Both were seriously wounded. Special Agents Dove and Grogan—despite wounding both criminals in the hail of bullets—were trapped in their car and killed when Platt fired at close range. Platt also shot and incapacitated Agent Hanlon.
