Carving The Berm JORDAN

No Man’s Land: A Water Commons is a commentary to the humanitarian crisis in the informal camps in the North-Eastern border zone between the Syrian and Jordanian berms, where over 80,000 refugees are stranded. Rather than viewing the zone as a holding area, this project proposes to reimagine the berm as an inhabitable productive landscape. By using fog harvesting, waste water management, permaculture and landscaping techniques, the project creates the possibility of an autonomous No Man’s Land. Through the harvesting of this scarce resource, the project is a response to the humanitarian crisis along Jordan’s northern borders, and a long term ecological approach to Jordan’s water infrastructure.

Installation - Process Begin by, puncturing the berm using tractors to allow resources to enter the site. Refugees begin to clustering around water (fog collector). Then dditional resources trucked to site to build fog towers and the backbone service infrastructure. Tractors begin creating a Keyline from berm to plant, allowing water to channel from the cluster into the permaculture using cut & fill strategy. With help of natural wind, this whole process will create a complete “Berm Cluster“. In four years, once the permaculture systems have matured, harvesting of food and resources such as date trees can begin to self sustain communities.

Design Strategy - Fog Harvesting The shaded fog structure can be built by refugees from onsite material. The structure is built out of palm wood while the mesh is knitted from ration sacks used to transport aid. This structure harvests enough drinking water while providing shade and congregational spaces. Some configurations have been designed to harvest solar power for electricity. The large fog tower is built similarly but has the ability to harvest more water.

What if? The conflict subsides and refugees are able to return home. -Will this area become a RUIN? -A MEMORIAL of a precarious moment in time?

What if? The project seeks to respond to a humanitarian crisis created by a political conflict. While the conflict may remain keeping people in holding for the foreseeable future, a scenario that begs the question. -Could No Man’s Land turn into a future MEGACITY?

LEARNING CITY A CITY WHERE EVERYONE CAN LEARN

Poughkeepsie suffers from a long tradition of town versus gown. The city and town are home to four institutions of higher learning which serve a wide range of students but the residents of the city have neither the skills nor the opportunities to access good jobs. The “Learning City” program brings these two communities together, and benefit both. Inspired by existing programs of low-income residents, NPO and colleges, “Learning city” will provide 4 new programs in two different directions: “Culinary Skill Exchange” and “Start New Restaurant!” in culinary direction, “Food Film ” and ”Main Street as classroom” in media direction, creating learning and job opportunities for low-income residents and students under professional guide.

- 11 -

Each facility of “Learning city” will be built by local community, NPO and colleges together, which will be dispersed into Main Street, connecting downtown community and colleges to revitalize the city.

Poughkeepsie should have been a college town. The positive effect of university city can bring good habitable environment, the smaller the gap between rich and poor and higher average level of education. Being as a mid Hudson education center, Poughkeepsie has the most abundant resources of university, but simultaneously, it also has the lowest educated area in the county. So it deserves to be developed. Paying attention to low-income residents and

When a group of individuals cannot accomplish their own needs, the best way is not to seek help from others, which is making this group given and vulnerable; but is to find another group of people with different needs, matching both two groups’ strengths and demands up with each other, which helps them get win-win equally.

Interaction: iHOPEiCAN event What is it about? I hope, I can tend to let people talk about: -what they hope for the city, communities and themselves, -what they can do to contribute to the community, or what they can teach others to do. Thus, the project not only reveals the part in their life that needs to be improved but also their abilities. It also involves dialogues between people and us, even among neighbors. When they wrote down something, we can ask them: Why do you hope for that? Or How do you learn that skill? The person amy tell the story of himself/herself

Is it possible to build an inter-college campus into the community? In campus, scattered small-scale facilities will integrate into the community fabric, so that students and low-income residents can really study + live + work together, to provide students with a wide range of social practice opportunities and to provide low-incomes work opportunities simultaneously. In addition, endowing the campus with community service function will become an important part of the community public space system. The area of the campus would be roughly around the middle Main St., between Clinton St., Worrall St. and two arteries. Within this campus area, excess parking lots and vacant lots would be utilized as the location of school facilities to transform downtown area into a pedestrian-oriented, walkable, livable community. From the city’s point of view, the campus will be the ligament between downtown, fall kill creek and cottage street, and then become a catalyst for the downtown revival program and the creek program.

Sandy hook memorial - Stream of life

- 23 -

The journey of life is like a ceaselessly flowing stream. Intense downpours followed by gentle trickles, with occasional moments of sheer serenity, the undulating stream difficultly finds its way between trunks and rocks, winds through grass and grains. But the constantly changing beautiful sceneries will be all captured and reflected in the stream of life. “Stream of Life”, supported by rough rocks, with the polished stainless-steel surface stretches over and mirrors different landscapes. It passes through the wildflowers, the gravel walk, the rustling woods, the marshy wetlands; it passes through sun and rain, through day and night, from spring to winter. Above the mirror, children toddle amid the sky and clouds, with the loving guidance of their teachers and families. Life is an adventure. Stream of Life is a challenging single-plank bridge, above which children will be exploring life with curiosity, supported by families and teachers at challenging times. Stream of Life features a zigzag form, abstracting the squiggly lines of a kid’s doodle, being linked up into an infinite loop. The loop implies a sense of consummation, while life is inevitably incomplete. The sacred soil condensed in three rock-like glass container fills the gap of the ring. When the rainwater floods the gravel walk, people will cross the water using the “great rocks” as stepping stones, just as the community weathered the storm with strength and courage all together.

Future progress and historical preservation are typically seen as two routes of architectural and urban design start form a present context. However, there can be a trace penetrating the history and promoting a future with a steady root in the city of Paris with a profound history and cutting-edge developments, street blocks with historical marks are in consistant dispute between programmatic developers and tradition defenders. The block intersects the abondoned Little Belt Railroad and Canal del l’Qurcq in the 19th arrondissement, previoulsy occupied by a factory for long, is now being invested for student housing development in response to the growing local design institutes. The memory of local manufacturing industry may not bring contradiction against the investment. The project aims to revitalize the local industry in the future with inhabited students; facilities; design professionals participating design and fabrication in Inhabitable Manufactory.

Little Belt railway bridge becomes Little Belt Park to attract publics

After the demolishment of the former factory, the site is full of possibility with the canal view and abandoned railway to be developed. Together with the history of the local industry, the project can be a great public attraction. By integrating social and student housings; manufactory; retails; design offices and public green space, Inhabitable Manufactory Complex is designed to promote a revival of local industrial development with a vision of the future.

North Perspective

The design is trying to find a way to respond to the linear and irregular site in a rational way, letting the main programs of the building interact with each other and become an integrated whole. The design is based on a module of 35 ft by 35 ft. The main bar building sitting following the linear site is made of the module repeating six times; and the slightly curved building, sitting on the south celebration the transition of the site, is based on two modules. Structurally speaking, the design is to recall the traditional and vernacular roof structure and express it in a more modern way. The building has a liner footprint; with a giant shed roof structure almost taking up half of the space in elevation, forming a repetitive, simple, and strong rhythm that could be clearly seen on the other side of the river. We hope the cleanness, simplicity, and continuity of the building could somehow revoke the initial passion for the river and for life.

In this small office, that has quite limited area, It is impossible to place all the required programs. In order to fulfill the demand, a solution to integrate the programs needs to be worked out.

DESIGN CONCEPT

By exploring the staffs touching on PINIFARINA, the convertible roof of Ferrari 448 spider was found as an inspiration which led to final concept of space conversion.

- 41 -

To accomplish the space conversion, A wall product was designed with the built-in power, wheels and receiving system, all walls in a controlled network can adapt themselves to create different layout of spaces based on different requirement. And 3 scenarios are designed.
