The Sense of Home Home is the place where one belongs. It is a place of privacy, peace and safety. It is an island, separated from the rest of the world, where time slows down, even stops. Home is a place where we can dream and replenish our strength and mood. It is the spatial framework of our memories as well as the starting point of our perception and understanding of the world. The workshop task is to design a simple and modest house, located in the area where the workshop takes place. The assignment focuses on the mental and emotional quality of architecture connected to the atmosphere of home. Professor Ales Vodopivec Guest tutor of the summer school of Architecture

. First step: Analyse a space, place that moved you (it does not need to be your home, it can be inside or outside), name it, draw the specific qualities that made an impression on you (materials, light, geometry, textures, smells and noises / sounds‌), make an abstract model of the place.
. SSARCH 2017
EVERFADING SUNSET There's this image. An image of a distant memory. A memory which embodies a lot of emotions. A memory of a sunset. A memory that will stay along with me. A memory which I beliะตve puts me in a place called home. A home which is not just a room, event or an atmosphere, but a state of mind. So each time I see the sunset, I feel like at home. I feel like at home because I know that I will always have that sunset.
JOSIF NIKOLOVSKI SSARCH 2017
FRAME The memories are the one which makes the space unique. On any occasion when we try to remember them we feel to be part of them, we live with them. My model was inspired when I was in Wyoming which I had great remembrances. The mountains inspired me immediately when I entered the room and to be there with the person that you have feelings for makes the place to be more special. I tried to put whole the remembering in one box to focus in one point of view “the frame” that I had. But whole flashbacks wasn’t enough to fit in one box so I decided to create two perspective views on side which describes the boundless memories.
ENES SEVER SSARCH 2017
PURIFYING OF MIND AND BODY The memory represents the feelings experienced at the thermal baths. Nature room within the nature itself, intertwined nature elements and energy flows that form the aura of contemplation and solitude. The abstract model is constructed with four walls that represent the four seasons of the year and forming the pool as a spiritual room, where you can purify the mind and the soul with the sensations formed from the wall of greenery, wall of the waterfall, wall of the wind and from the wall of rocks. Through the cleaning process you get to wake up the nature within you and meet with your spirit.
VALBONA FEJZA SSARCH 2017
REFLECTION Impression of an atmosphere- the only memory that never fades away. It's a cave composed by two types of rocks, a small hole that reflects the light from the sky and the gentle waves that swashes into the rocks. This perfect combination melted my heart. Somehow there was enough of everything. This is how I experience the word home. Enough of everything. Notning less or more, but the things and feelings on the right place with right people.
ELENA STEFANOVSKA SSARCH 2017
ROOF OF FALLING STARS This roof represents a place where I can sit for hours and feel the atmosphere made of the rhythm of the sun and the moon, the sounds, smells and the feel of the living. I love the awakening to the calls of birds, the cool air on your face and the first rays of the sun. Also, at night I can see the planes landing and departing because the airport is really close to the house.

JOURNEY Having journey together through the dynamic space of Monastery Joakim Osogovski, while walking the continues path, overlapping with the flow of the water, and domination of nature.Traditional surrounding, welcoming frames, visual awareness of the space.. are basic elements that create different feelings and impression on different positions through the space, as one home is contained from different memories.
MAJA NIKOVA BOZIDAR DIMITROVSKI SSARCH 2017
REFLECTION To be at peace, to be brought to peace, to remain in peace. The sense of home is not something you can feel at a place you have visited only once, but a place where you go all over again, making you feel preserved from everything, offering you peace and safety. Those are the feelings I experience when I visit Kaneo, the most inspirational place in my hometown. Standing at the edge of the rock, watching my own reflection in the wavy lake and listening to the sound of silence evoke all of the emotions that make me feel “being at home”. The confrontation of the rock and the lake combined with the beauty of the endless horizon are reflexed in my soul as the “the sense of home”.
SIMONA CHINGOSKA SSARCH 2017
THROUGH THE NATURE Whenever I close my eyes and think about my childhood, the memories will always take me back at the time when I was travelling to my friends’ summerhouse located in a village so called Volkovija. A variety of feelings overwhelmed me whenever I entered the house. Even if the ground floor was opened and I could barely hug the nature, it still felt like I was in a shelter, feeling safe, peaceful and calm.
ELENA PETRESKA SSARCH 2017
FEELING AT HOME Our earliest memories of home are often connected to our childhood. Our homes are a way of organizing and understanding the space within ourselves and the way the world is constructed around us. A place that have a deep and unique emotional meaning for me is my grandfather’s workshop. A door which leads you to a room full of safety, comfort, serenity and belonging to your loved ones is a memory from my childhood that will never fade away.
TIJANA MOJSOSKA SSARCH 2017
HOME OUTSIDE THE HOUSE A home is a feeling. A feeling of being warm and safe , a feeling of being free and happy . I get these feelings in my backyard. This magical place is a circle of my memories. These elements, the tree, the table and the water are creating my sence of home outside the house. WATER from the spring, food od the TABLE, family around the TABLE, shelter from the TREE.
DANIELA MATESKA SSARCH 2017
TUNNEL OF MEMORIES Home, so simple yet so complex word to be explained. Entering in a space that creates a whole another world filled with joy, love, intimacy and serenity, is my definition of home. The house of my grandfather, in an old neighborhood in the center of the city, was the place where I felt protected, loved, peaceful, myself. Even though important to me, that was just a building that was demolished as any other building as result of the city growth. As I grew up I realized that it is not the buildings that make us feel like being at home, but the people in them with whom we are making memories.
TEODORA ILIEVSKA SSARCH 2017
INSIDE OUT The word home awakes different feelings to each person individually. Home is where happiness, warmth, security, sadness, privacy and everything in between live together and coexist in one community. These are all atmospheres from within us that combined give us a specific frame. This picture presents the entrance in the home full of all the feelings, the state of the mind full of emotions.
VJOSA SARACINI SSARCH 2017
WHOLENESS Trying to break down the sense of home I came across some qualities that define “home” and recognized them in places that have built up my memories: Intimacy – the feeling I got from the hugging arms of the bay shores on a beach I used to visit; Security – is what I felt walking through a small dense pine forest; Peace the need of being all by myself in my bedroom, a state of pure honesty; Community – the living room with the fireplace in my grandfather’s home, the place that gives the home its spirit. A wholeness makes up from these qualities and define what it means to feel like home.
VANJA TRAJKOVSKI SSARCH 2017
WATER CURTAIN The sense of home is sometimes perceived outside the house. So, it is not connected with a place, but with a different feeling that depends from the atmosphere. The memory that describes that feeling is the view at the konak’s logia at the Monastery Joachim Osogovski where you can enjoy the different layers of nature. But for me the most important impression was the raining drops which make like a curtain and gives a special feeling so you just can watch and enjoy it. The model represents the raining (water) curtain which creates those vertical lines.
LJAVDRIM REDZEPI SSARCH 2017
LAYERS OF NATURE The view from the old konak's loggia frames a view of the forest. Looking at the forest, I can imagine the walk through it. It covers me with its multilayered embrace. If I close my eyes only for a moment, the first thing that distracts me is the song of the birds, the bubbling of the river, the sound of the wind... A variety of stimuli push me into the reality of space. They awaken the imagination of what happens under the branches of trees. The movements that are created from the wind flowing through the leaves dynamize the seemingly static landscape.
SANJA AVRAMOVSKA SSARCH 2017
RAIN I remember when I was a little girl it was summertime in Skopje and the temperatures were very high. I was sitting by the window and I could smell both the asphalt and the trees (This triangles show the scrappiness of the feelings.) I could also see big grey clouds moments before it started to rain. I could feel calmness in the air, freedom and security at the same time. This strong memory is carved in my mind. KALINA TRAJANOVSKA SSARCH 2017
CHILDHOOD This memory represents the feelings I get while I’m passing by this street in my village. This street is about 10 minutes away from my home, and from its right side its empty. This emptiness allows me to enjoy the sunset and the wind, the sounds of the birds, the smell of the trees. It is strange and at the same time beautiful how all this things kinda mix up together and they take me back to my childhood. There’s not any wall or any building, just this feelings. FLORA HALIMI SSARCH 2017
CUT OF LIGHT Home is a place where you grow up wanting to leave, but then you grow old and realize that your feelings are there and you end up wanting to get back to. House is built with walls, home is built with feelings. You could walk out of house but you return home, because nature is not a place to visit, it is a place you feel it. Feeling come if you are able to see the line of light when nature touches the sky. That line warm you heart and keep you alive.
MILICA SAVESKA SSARCH 2017
SUBLIME Captivated by nature itself, the forest with it’s long, thin trees and a forever enchanting light is a never ending inspiration. Wandering in it makes you feel isolated from the modern world, yet also at peace with oneself. The subtle light guides you through it’s roots and accompanies you during your journey through the man-made path. Designing a house while using nature itself is the epitome of a modest and self-sustainable architecture. MILKA MANEVA SSARCH 2017
THE ONEIRIC HOUSE Trying to keep the theme “The sense of home” in the core of my project, in the first step I thought of all the spaces I have ever been to, trying to find the one that felt most like home. Truth be told, I couldn’t think of any space where I felt like home quite as much as I would like to, something that would match all the imagined spaces I’ve never been to. With the collage I wanted to represent the imagined interiors of the houses we always wanted to penetrate but never could. NIKOLA MILOSAVLJEVSKI SSARCH 2017
PEACEFUL PUBLIC PLACE The instant impression I got when I entered the Archive of Skopje was so vivid and powerful that I was overcome with feeling of warmth and peace that is so unusual for a public place. Furthermore, for the first time I was inside a brutalism building which surprised me with its pleasantness and comfort. I suppose with a successful combination of textures and light any space with a human size can turn into an extraordinary space no matter its character.
MARIJA PETROVA SSARCH 2017
HUG FROM THE NATURE I was in the mountain forest of Vodno. The moment when I stood between those trees was the moment when I felt like I belong there. It was my room of dreams and hopes, my home. I was outside, but in the same time inside. I could feel the nature creating a space around me. The four trees were my columns and the wind hugging me was my wall. This hug from the nature made me feel invinsible and strong, safe and protected and these are the feelings that my home should provide. TIJANA CONEVSKA SSARCH 2017
PEACEFULNESS AND DETACHMENT I am always overwhelmed with feelings of peacefulness, calmness and detachment when I go to lake Ohrid. Simultaneously I feel the sensations that make the atmosphere of the place: sound of waves, smell of water, blue color stretching up to the horizon, touch of cold water on my skin. The outline of the lake is a border that separates the loud city in one side and a peaceful micro cosmos on the other. There, detached from shore and buildings, lies a beautiful living world. A force of positive energy drags me towards it, where I am welcomed with positive energy.
VESNA RISTOVSKA SSARCH 2017
CAVE The old caves in Turkey in which all people, poor and rich, live together in the same conditions, raw materials surrounding them and light entering from above from multiple openings, give the impression of uneasiness and at the same time the feeling of home. The representation of these impressions and feelings is shown in the picture. SIMEIRA STAFAI SSARCH 2017
. Second step: Analyse the location (topography, climate conditions, vegetation, traditional architecture, views etc. ) with sketches, photos, models.
. SSARCH 2017
PROTECTION AND FREEDOM This location is sourounded from the north and south side with objects, so it means that the house is protected. But on the other side, the east and west side are widely opened, so they represent freedom. This opened space is connected with the rain and the sky.
MARTINA PENEVA ELENA STEFANOVSKA KALINA TRAJANOVSKA SSARCH 2017
SECTION When I visited for the first time the village Varos, from the first steps I started catching up this details of the houses that are so traditional, like the windows, the doors, its materials from stone and wood, the covering of the roofs, its simetry. I took all these details with me and I got up where there were no more houses and found this location that has this beautiful view of the sunset and the sunrise at the same time.
FLORA HALIMI SSARCH 2017
LAYERS The chosen location is on the opposite side to the place where are situated the houses. It offers an inspirational view to the colorful layers of the forest and its south-east orientation provides favorable conditions. It is hardly visible from the street so it ensures the peace and safety and the steepness of the terrain emphasize the liveliness of the location. The emotional feelings evoked by the character of the place make you feel the “sense of home outside your home.
MILICA SAVESKA SIMONA CHINGOSKA SSARCH 2017
INTERRUPTED LINE Having visited the location of the ideal (to be) home in the village Varovishte, I was stunned with the extraordinary calmness and the beautiful views that surrounded the place. Probably the smallest village I’ve ever been to, Varovishte is consisted only of several houses, all of them beside a path making a linear row of houses. This line was however interrupted in some places and my idea was to intervene there, completing the row. With the model I wanted to represent the slope of the path and the feeling that the houses were rooted in the ground, a feeling conveyed by the masonry ground.
NIKOLA MILOSAVLJEVSKI SSARCH 2017
LOST NATURE As a small but significant impact of the nature, this village embraces modesty and compactness. The ideal mixture of local materials allows for them to unite with the nature so impeccably, creating a perfect harmony. Combining our feelings and beliefs about the meaning of home, we chose a perfect location that fulfills our needs of being protected, feeling serene, and being connected with the nature. Even though it’s within the village, its surrounding of trees as a natural barrier provides isolation and intimacy. That’s the ideal place for a person to reflect on his memories, and make new ones.

A MISSING SEQUENCE Moved by our memories from the past, we found an extremely inspirational place in the village, which gathered all our emotions and feelings into one. It was a place which craved for being improved and finished. We felt like something was missing to fulfill the sequence of traditional houses, something that will connect the ensemble of houses into one neighborhood, such as a rural village path would do.
TIJANA MOJSOSKA MARIJA PETROVA ELENA PETROSKA SSARCH 2017
PLAY Small linear village on mountain, laying only on one site of the accessible road, build with same materials, but still every house is with different look and orientation. Learning from the traditional way of building, but expressed in contemporary way. We choose a location bellow the road, the only location that is in the village, but have clear landscape view, a place where you can sit and enjoy the play of your feeling. To be together, but still different. MAJA NIKOVA BOZIDAR DIMITRIEVSKI SSARCH 2017
THE FENCE The village has linear orientation through the path. When we went on site we tried to find a location which will fit all of our desires: to adapt the location with other houses, to have astonishing view and to have his own boundaries. The most inspiring thing that we saw was the fences which in one way can be barrier or border of that place. We tried to show on the model how the fences can be part of different variations in the village. It can be a port, a yard but also is understandable in the whole village which acts like a patio surrounding by the nature.
ENES SEVER LJAVDRIM REDZEPI SSARCH 2017
COEXIST The basic idea of architecture is that it should be modest, sincere, simple, contemporary. It should embody and enhance the connection between the human and the nature. Vernacular architecture reflects the simplicity and complexity of peoples needs, their beliefs and their craftsmanship. „We throw a stone into the water. Sand swirls up and settles again. The stir was necessary. The stone has found its place. But the pond is no longer the same.“ - Peter Zumthor (Thinking Architecture)
JOSIF NIKOLOVSKI VANJA TRAJKOVSKI SSARCH 2017
CONTINUITY Traditional Macedonian architecture is a unique type of research which encourages a more natural approach, involving natural/local materials and learning from the old masters of construction. The spirit of the villages inspires a continuation of the same type, characteristic for every village and symbolic for it’s own location. Every house typology, terrain and material has it’s own place which serves as a reference for future projects. MILKA MANEVA SSARCH 2017
HOUSE WITHIN THE HOUSE The house is set in the middle of a frame - a fence border of a rural yard, which in fact means that life here takes place in the middle of the yard more than in the house itself. It has the same meaning as the other utilitarian facilities in the yard. The house is erected from the ground and placed on a platform that symbolizes the qualities of the terrain on which it is built. The two levels are visible, but the roof is emphasized, which is often forgotten as a space of fear, imagination and where the stairs always lead upwards.
VALBONA FEJZA SANJA AVRAMOSKA SSARCH 2017
SUNSTUDY The impression from the location firstly is its position and orientation, the path of the sun, the direction of the wind and the position of the houses. Among these characteristics, the one that was more important for us was the path of the sun, its effect on location and the future intervention. Also the usage of the light by the existing houses and that incorporation in the intervention. VJOSA SARACINI SIMEIRA STAFAI SSARCH 2017
PATH While we were walking through the only path in the village, beautiful views were showing up to me on my right side: to a forest, a tree or the city of Kriva Palanka. The curvy path led me to the several houses that the village contains of, none of which is constantly in use. Every one of them is positioned perpendicularly to the slope and open to the beautiful view. Some are authentic, made of natural materials (wood, stone and soil), and some are intervened to. Finally, where the path ends, a large green surface opens in front of me. Here I was fascinated by the calmness of the place and the beautiful views of a forest and the city of Kriva Palanka. As I walked around, I was attracted by a ‘’yard’’ that is created by several trees. I felt this place more intimate and private, but at the same time allowing all the nature of the environment to flow through.
VESNA RISTOVSKA SSARCH 2017

. Third step: Make a proposal for a modest house that responds (is not imposed) to specific qualities of the site and embody the qualities of a place dear to you
. SSARCH 2017
ARCHETYPE The idea of sense of home is incorporated in a single form “archetype which makes analogy with the existing houses in the village. Even if the two memories were from different places which also had distinctive feelings we achieved to integrate in one space. The main concept was to divide the home in two parts, primary and secondary uses which creates a path inside the house. Constructed all from local stone, the building has unique but also simple language that corresponds to the village.
ENES SEVER LJAVDRIM REDZEPI SSARCH 2017
DUALITY (二重性) Ideally a home would be a spaces which makes you feel safe, comfortable, secured, intimate while also enjoying the openness and being exposed to the nature and its surroundings. Our idea is to embody those feelings into a composition of two structures, one enclosed and secured, the other exposed and open. The first would be a place for a temporary stay and the other an observatory. Both of the structures amalgamate to a place of peace and tranquility.
JOSIF NIKOLOVSKI VANJA TRAJKOVSKI SSARCH 2017
ELEMENTAL ARCHITECTURE A minimal house involving only elemental needs of a person is a result of a research of traditional Macedonian architecture and a personal feeling of home. Involving only local materials and adding vertical accents to the house, it comes to life and gives a feeling of calmness and serenity to the users. Essential elements produce a simple life. Noting the traditional construction and the vertical accents of nature, the future house gets it’s own character and comes to life.
MILKA MANEVA SSARCH 2017
SENSE EXHIBITION HOUSE THE CAVE - the niches in which one sleeps and sits offer the safety and protection of the cave. A unifying element is the hearth in the middle. ROOM OF THE RISING SUN - A place absorbed by light, a place where one can feel the wind. Place for solitude and contemplation. PURIFYING WALL - It defines the yard. From the rain collector the water is transferred to the kitchen and the toilet, the channel passes through a wall that captures the sun and is used for irrigation. It ends in a bath with a view. SMELL PAVILLION - The exhibition of the senses ends here. Tea is dried on a wall that defines the yard. The yard becomes the summer house.
VALBONA FEJZA SANJA AVRAMOSKA SSARCH 2017
LINE OF CONTINUITY The house is located on a site that offers intimacy and detachment, distanced from the existing buildings. Wanting to import as much nature as I can inside the house, I intervened with a curved wall that enables different visual sequences towards the beautiful views.
To materialize the house I used natural materials like stone and wood. This way the house is connected to the built environment. Another sensation present in the design is water. The rain falls from the roof to a shallow pool surrounding the house. Light, water and materials create a pleasant atmosphere inside and outside the house
VESNA RISTOVSKA SSARCH 2017
CLOSENESS / OPENNESS This house is so small and so simply but carries all those feelings and sounds and smells with a minimal kitchen and a minimal bedroom but with this inside and outside space that lets you enjoy all the nature that surrounds you. With its closeness and openness at the same time allows you to use the house during the whole seasons of the year and the materials connect perfectly with the nature and also the traditional houses.
FLORA HALIMI SSARCH 2017
LABYRINTH OF LIGHT While creating this space, we were focusing on the most significant things in life that make a place feel like home. As the creation of home is a complex process, we were mainly focused of the way light is filling the space, and the contrast that it makes so the space can have extraordinary atmosphere. Intentionally, the materials are local and natural, so that this house can mix with its surrounding. Serenity, safety and intimacy are provided as soon as you enter the house, which will lead you through the path of the light. DANIELA MATESKA TIJANA CONEVSKA TEODORA ILIEVSKA SSARCH 2017
THREE WALLS Home is a place where you want to feel safe and free. Our idea of these three walls represents the protection from the north wind, but also they are connected with the path that leads you to the entrance by itself. They have same content but different structure which is similar with the cave. The field is quite steep so the view is directed to the nature.
MARTINA PENEVA ELENA STEFANOVSKA KALINA TRAJANOVSKA SSARCH 2017
CAVIN’ One of the goals was to create a space that could be used from everyone, the inhabitants and foreigners. It welcomes all, enabling visitors different atmospheres as they climb the platforms that are on different heights. Each platform has its own program, its purpose for its position in space. VJOSA SARACINI SIMEIRA STAFAI SSARCH 2017
A CHAPEL FOR THE SOUL Water, light and architecture. A small chapel with a central plan, it evokes a monumental feeling when you are inside and that feeling is highlighted by the central access and the central open space in the roof. The inverted roof emphasize the distinction that is not a traditional house and it allows the rain to fall in and create a fantastic atmosphere inside. The water combined with the light coming in from the specific openings in the walls and it’s reflection on the integrated rock makes an outstanding expression of light and shadow. The upper floor of the chapel allows to observe the finest views of the nature and enjoy the sound of the birds and insects flying allaround.
MILICA SAVESKA SIMONA CHINGOSKA SSARCH 2017
SIMPLICITY AND COMPLEXITY The position of the house is bellow the road, so the house is not interrupting the view of the existing building, also hiding from the main axis of wind blowing. We are following the natural slop of the terrain, playing with the highs and platforms on different level, so we are creating a continues, journey path inside the house, also making visual connections through the space The house is designed using module (a/b/a),with minimal dimensions and basic needs, using stone foundations and wooden structure. The house is lifted from the ground, so it can let the water from the melting snow from the mountain to pass bellow the building. The building frames an existing plum tree, have openings, that you can see through the building.. Also contains public lookout, that everybody can access it from the outside. It’s like a shelter where anyone can find their own feeling.
MAJA NIKOVA BOZIDAR DIMITRIEVSKI SSARCH 2017
SHARED PATH The idea of building a complex of three minimalistic structures was only to improve the surrounding in addition to the neighborhood. By multiplying cubes in size of the existing houses and rotating them by the rules of rural architecture, an organic tissue was embodied into the village. The composition is a result of the try to preserve the traditional way of building without an attempt to simply copy it.
TIJANA MOJSOSKA MARIJA PETROVA ELENA PETROSKA SSARCH 2017
LEVELS OF INTIMACY The main concept of my design was to connect the spaces in the home with regard to their level of intimacy. I divided the house in three zones. The first one is the most public and includes the living room and the dining area. The second zone that connects the other two is the study, a place where both public and private merge, having in mind that work is as intimate as it is public. The last zone is extremely private, consisted only of the bedroom and a private bathroom. The level of intimacy is accentuated with the quantity of light as well as the size of the space, going from the larger (public) to the smaller (intimate) spaces.
