Project 001 AreCoustic

Project 001: AreCoustic

DESIGN CONCEPT Betel nut, the fruit of the Areca palm, is popular for chewing throughout some Asian countries, and it is quite common in Taiwan. A lot of waste is produced during the production of betel nuts, so we have decided to make use of these, giving it brand new applications. AreCoustic and AreStool, which combine the words "Areca" with "acoustic" and "stool", is a furniture design project based on material innovation. Using common, local wastes as materials, we expect Arecoustic and AreStool to not only be sustainable, but also illustrate a new image of Taiwanese culture.

Betel nut stands in Taiwan

BETEL NUT Originated in Southeast Asia, betel nut has been popular for chewing for a long time. Symbolizing friendship and respect towards others, It often served as gifts or refreshment of banquet in Taiwan. Nowadays, betel nut is still popular in Taiwan, many people chew betel nut to boost the spirits. It also plays an important role in the economy. The annual output value of betel nut is approximately 10 billion TWD, which is the second highest among all crops in Taiwan. Betel palms on the hill

NUTSHELLS OF BETEL NUTS The vendors cut off both ends of betel nuts, and peel the nutshells to get the kernel inside, making lots of wastes every day. The fiber of betel nuts' nutshells is short and coarse. After gluing with polyurethane, they form a soft, rough and porous texture, which can be used on various kinds of furnitures.

The nutshells cut off with scissors

How to turn nutshells into material

1. Dry the betal nut wastes collected from 2. Soak the nutshells in Aqueous sodium hy- 3. Defibrate, and dry the cellulose fibers. the vendors to prevent molding. droxide (NaOH(aq)) to dissolve lignin.

4. Dye the fibers.

RECYCLING SYSTEM Nutshells of betel nuts are usually thrown away. However, if the government sets up a system to collect this, we can ensure our material source to produce products with a lower cost. In this project, we recycled betel nuts' nutshells and royal palm tree's fallen leaves for material. In the future, we expect to find more potential waste materials in Taiwan; with an effective recycling system, the circular economy can be established, and it will benefit more people in the society.

Government propagates the policy of finding recyclable materials and making them reusable

Cooperate with clean teams

Collect nutshells from vendors and fallen leaves

Other potential materials

Gather all recycled things for preprocessing

With one of the world's most effecient recycling systems, Taiwan has enormous potential for circular economy. Use recycled materials to produce products

AreCoustic Panels AreCoustic panels are made from nutshells of betel nuts, which have pores and form a rough surface, allowing them to eliminate echoes and reduce noise. These panels can be easily installed onto the stand and connect with one another, becoming an acoustic screen.

Light Emergency Kit

Project 002 Light Emergency Kit

Project 002: Light Emergency Kit DESIGN CONCEPT In Taiwan, earthquake strikes frequently. Thus, it is necessary to prepare emergency kit at home. However, not every family prepares them, even if they do, they might put them in an unapparent place, making it hard to find during the blackout. Light Emergency Kit can guide people in the dark, let everyone know where it is and get it easily. Not only containing necessaties, but also small and easy to carry, Light Emergency Kit can be put in a handier place. It is also equipped with a wireless charger (which is also a mobile power bank) to provide temporary power, which can be used to communicate and call for help.

There is a light band made of optical fabric and reectable fabric on the backpack, with a LED light on the end, connecting to the wireless charger. During blackout, the LED light will turn on automatically, and the light will be conducted by the light band, making it easier to be found. The wireless charger is placed at the bottom of the backpack. It is like a mobile power bank. When the power is cut off, it continues to charge the light band. Therefore, when people move with Light Emergency Kit, the light band continues to glow. The charger can also charge mobile devices.

TRANS-SPLINT

19

Project 003 Trans-splint

Project 003: Trans-Splint DESIGN CONCEPT Spraining and straining are the most common sport injury that could happen in our daily lives. When it happens, the first-aid treatment is called“PRICE”, which is an acronym for Protection, Rest, Icing, Compression, and Elevation. But sometimes it is hard to immobilize the injured part, icing and compressing by ourselves at the same time. Trans-splint is a splint for temporarily immobilizing wrist or ankle, when it is sprained, strained, or contused. It can combine with the ice bag, support, ice patch, and compress the injured part at the same time, providing a better care to the injured part.

DESIGN FEATURES 1. It can be used on wrist and ankle injury. 2. User can change the degree of pressure by adjusting the belt. 3. Extendable attached ice bag

The ice bag can be simply attached to the splint; and it can attach to other ice bags as well, wrapping around the injured part. Put the ice pack into the ice bag to avoid frostnip.

"The highchair that stands by you"

23

Project 004 Highchair

Project 004: Highchair DESIGN CONCEPT Highchairs are essential for babies to learn how to eat and table manners. However, as the children grow up, highchairs become useless, and people may throw them away, making lots of waste. To extend its life, this highchair has another function: by ipping the tray, it will become a simple shelf. With the additional use, it still can be usefull when the children do not need highchairs anymore. This highchair not only reduces wastes, but also keeps the childhood memories. It is a highchair that always stands by you.

Draw out the seatback and put it on the stretcher; then ip the tray onto the armrest.

Project 005: Atypical Sharpener DESIGN CONCEPT Sharpening pencils with knife allows people to adjust the angle or length of the pencil lead while sharpening, but without damaging it. However, the falling wood chips often brought some inconvenience. The concept of Atypical Sharpener is to build a new image of sharpening pencils. It collects wood chips while sharpen pencils with knife. Therefore, users won't have to worry about cleaning, and they can sharpen pencils anywhere.

27

Project 005 Atypical Sharpener

DESIGN FEATURES 1. It is universal design for left and right hands. 2. The knifepoint is wrapped to protect users. 3. The rubber plugs avoid wood chips from falling out of the container. 4. The image of Atypical Sharpener is a pencil, thus its color planning uses light orange and dark gray, which symbolizes wood and pencil lead.

Project 005 Atypical Sharpener

THE STORY BEHIND ATYPICAL SHARPENER Atypical Sharpener is one of the first few projects I have done, right after I stepped into the ďŹ eld of product deisgn. It was also a special project for me--it is a product I design for myself. I sharpen pencils with knife instead of sharpener, since I always get a sense of satisfaction while sharpening them. Furthermore, the art teacher who led me to the world of art and design in my childhood is the person teaching me how to sharpen pencil. For sentimental reasons, Atypical Sharpener was born. Interestingly, many people liked the product even though they did not sharpen pencils with knives anymore. It recalled their memories of the times learning sketching in school. I realized that no matter how small the need is, it is always worth studying, and improving it. Atypocal Sharpener is not perfect, but it keeps reminding me of bringing happiness to people bit by bit.

Project 007: Weather Patterns DESIGN CONCEPT Time, seasons, weather -- these factors inuence the street view, making a city living and ever-changing. In Gothenburg, the city on the west coast of Sweden, it rains a lot through out the year. Though the continuous rain or long cold winter may not sounds as pleasant as the bright sunny days, can they be something to expect? Weather Patterns parklet is a public resting space that changes its appearance in the rain or in winter, painting the bad weather with colorful patterns. People can rest and relax on the parklet in sunny days; and when it rains, the color of the patterns shows, creating surprise for people in the bad weather.

37

Project 007 Weather Patterns

PARKLET Originated in San Francisco, parklets are small but relaxing spots for people in the city. They are sited along the curb line on streets, where on-street parking spaces exist. Parklets in Gothenburg will be removed when the winter comes, since the plants on them can not stand the coldness. The mission is to redesign parklets in Gothenburg, making them suitable for all seasons. The existing parklet in Gothenburg.

GOALS Make the experience of visiting the parklet special

Can be used all year round

Connect people, streets and the city

IDEA GENERATION The design can be changed by external factors, such as weather and time.
