As an editor, I have many chances to talk to the executives in different companies. What we discuss most often are their product features. Manufacturers endeavor to make their products and technologies unique and sophisticated. Sometimes it seems nearly impossible when you read the specifications and expected benefits. More than 10 megapixel cameras for use in security? Suppliers providing a solution to process the uncompressed video via a single LAN cable or to transmit IP signal via a coaxial cable?

Are they bluffing? Don’t get me wrong. What I would like to highlight is the real value added of a company and how it actually benefits their customers and enable them to get more ROI, ease the installation difficulties, reduce the maintenance and retrofitting and most importantly, to create extra income.

“Outside of economics, value added refers to 'extra' feature(s) of an item of interest (product, service, person etc.) that go beyond the standard expectations and provide something 'more' while adding little or nothing to its cost. Value-added features give competitive edges to companies with otherwise more expensive products,” according to the definition from Wikipedia.

One supplier explained how their partner program helps provide the premier service to their clients. A distributor manages to survive in the market by manufacturing their products and providing a free one-year service and maintenance guarantee. A system integrator starts to distribute products. These are perfect examples.

“Commoditization” of security products created the thin margins for analog products, in particular. The almost total lack of meaningful differentiation, the economic downturn in the U.S. and E.U., and the new IP technology propelled many security companies to start creating their true value added now.

CORPORATE NEWS Axxonsoft and JVC Partner on IP HD Axxonsoft has broadened its software support to include integration by supporting the new Super LoLux HD line of IP cameras from JVC, a manufacturer of hardware for video management systems.

The new line of IP cameras uses JVC CMOS sensors that support 1,080p resolution. The technology captures color images at light levels as low as 0.15 lux, while Clear Logic Video Intelligence uses smart algorithms to increase image sharpness. CLVI applies digital signal processing to remove fog, haze, rain and smoke that impair image quality.

The use of H.264 High Profile substantially reduces network traffic

in comparison with H.264 Main Profile and Baseline. Other important functions include auto back focus, write support for SD cards, VMD, image masking of confidential areas, intelligent audio detection and camera tampering alarms/detection.

The limitations and inconvenience involved in using alternative identification methods, such as photographs, passwords and PINs, have driven the growth of biometric technologies in the last few years.

Bosch Cameras Keep an Eye on UK Bridge and Vessel Traffic Six video surveillance cameras from Bosch Security Systems have been installed on the newly constructed Twin Sails Bridge in the town of Poole on the south coast of England. The cameras help to monitor the traffic and pedestrians crossing the bridge as well as vessels passing beneath the bridge.

The Twin Sails Bridge features two triangular lifting leaves which, when raised, form the iconic shape of a yacht's sails and thus reflect the maritime history of the coastal town. It is a part of a landmark regeneration project for the Borough of Poole. In addition, the bridge provides access to a large regeneration site in the southwest and is a much-needed extra harbor crossing for easing traffic congestion around the town.

The camera uses brushless motor technology to enable quiet yet reliable operation; the full 360-degree continuous rotation pan and 270-degree tilt control offer exceptional viewing capability. Small increment pan/tilt speeds give the user precise control, which is fundamental for tracking subjects when fully zoomed in. What’s more, it is compatible with virtually any control equipment and can seamlessly integrate with the vast majority of security systems.

CORPORATE NEWS UK Drivers Licensing Authority and Border Agency Use 3M Cogent Biometrics Post Office Limited in the United Kingdom announces that its Applicant Enrollment Identification service has now processed the biometric information of more than one and a half million applicants using 3M Cogent Biometric Enrollment Stations.

The Post Office carries out the enrollment process by obtaining applicant information such as fingerprints, photographs and digital signatures. The AEI service is designed to serve multiple clients and is currently being used by the Driver Vehicle Licensing Authority and the UK Border Agency.

Middle East Market: IP Video Equipment Sales Exceed 50 Percent Says IMS IMS Research estimates that the tipping point when network video surveillance sales overtake analogue video surveillance sales has already happened in the Middle Eastern Market. IMS recently published a report on this market and estimated that network video surveillance equipment sales were 53 percent of the total video surveillance equipment sales in 2011.

The Middle Eastern market will be driven by the strong demands for video surveillance equipment from larger regional markets. Turkey, the largest market in the Middle East, is still mainly serviced by analogue equipment. However, due to a number of infrastructure and transportation projects, the penetration of network video in Turkey will increase significantly towards 2016. In Iran, a heavy focus on city surveillance will be the key driver. In Saudi Arabia, large infrastructure projects in hospitals, schools and airports will drive network video surveillance penetration. These projects are due to a surplus of oil revenues and a response to uprisings across the Arab world. Large banking projects have also been confirmed in Kuwait for 2012 and 2013, while the construction industry in the UAE Middle East Market is expected to see improvements towards 2015 and 2016.

The DVLA uses the AEI service to allow drivers to renew their driver's licenses. By capturing drivers' photographs and digital signatures at Post Office branches, the service has automated a renewal process that occurs every ten years. Using AEI, the renewal process takes an average from 3.5 to 5 minutes.

With over 750 AEI locations throughout the UK, the Post Office-3M Cogent partnership has successfully developed a proven and secure information system to capture the biometric information to the required quality standards for both agencies.

In-Flight Services Provider Enhances Safety and Service Quality with QNAP Security Solution LSG Sky Chefs, a provider of in-flight services, aims to provide quality food for the flying public. It has facilities worldwide, including a food preparation site in Egypt.

Hindu Houses of Worship in N. America Opt for Genetec Management Platform BAPS is a non-profit, socio-spiritual Hindu organization that provides guidance and inspiration to people to lead more enriched lives, morally, culturally and spiritually through youth activities and educational opportunities, precipitating and participating in charities and promoting family values. The organization began in 1907 in a small village in India and has since spread worldwide, generating more than 3,300 centers. The first North American BAPS facility was established in 1974 in a New York basement, and today there are approximately 70 locations within Canada and the United States.

The search for a security platform first began when BAPS decided to deploy perimeter protection at a California location. They found themselves in need of a security solution that could integrate with and drive the perimeter protection component; therefore it was important to find an open platform that would easily integrate with third-party solutions.

After testing a variety of products, BAPS integrated SightLogix’s automated outdoor video system and Genetec's Security Center software to create a comprehensive video solution.

Agricultural Operation in S. Dakota Leverages IQinVision System IQinVision announced that a large agricultural operation in central South Dakota has deployed an advanced IP surveillance system powered by IQinVision HD megapixel cameras and Milestone network video management software. Dakota Security Systems designed and installed the IP video and wireless mesh systems and provides continued technical support.

Previously, the farm had employed an analog surveillance system that could only be viewed from a local TV monitor and did not offer high resolution images, remote access, flexibility, scalability, or ease of use. The owner was never able to get support for the equipment, which lost its value quickly after the system failed to recover after a power surge.

Based on Dakota's recommendations, the owner decided to deploy an IP video surveillance system consisting of 2 HD indoor dome cameras and 12 HD exterior dome cameras.

All cameras are managed by Milestone XProtect IP video software from the farm's central shop office. Together, IQinVision, Milestone Systems and Tropos Networks, provide the owner with the ability to remotely monitor and manage the safety and security of his agricultural operation.

For the past two years, the LLBWS has greatly improved its security technology by deploying Lenel access control and a mix of Axis IP-based digital surveillance cameras, and now this year, Firetide will contribute 13 outdoor mesh nodes to connect a real-time network of multiple IP cameras covering the vast majority of the 79-acre baseball complex and surrounding areas.

“With increased security concerns and tougher economic pressures, temporary wireless video networks make sense for securing special events, be it a baseball tournament or a presidential national convention,” said Bo Larsson, CEO of Firetide.

Euro 2012 Fan Zone Counts on VCA Technology for Crowd Control VCA Technology’s video analytics played an important role ensuring the safety of football fans whilst they enjoyed the facilities at Warsaw's Fan Zone during Euro 2012. Entry was free and on a first come, first served basis. It was anticipated that the number of people wishing to enter could far exceed the safety level which was judged to be 95,000 people at any given time.

By instantly analyzing the images captured by cameras, the video analytics software was able to instantly and accurately detect and count the exact number of people crossing a defined zone at each of the Fan Zone's entrances. All of the 44 GANZ encoders were integrated by CallNet.pl into one system, with a central server aggregating all the metadata into a single database.

The Fan Zone was a great success with literally millions of people enjoying the brilliant atmosphere of the tournament. Most of the people present were probably unaware that they were being kept safe with the help of the innovative video analytics software.

Swedish Law Enforcement Deploys Fingerprint Identification from Morpho Morpho (Safran group) announced the first European deployment of MorphoBIS, its identification system, to the Swedish National Police Board (Rikspolisstyrelsen). This Automated Fingerprint Identification System is used for investigation, identification and verification in law enforcement applications.

Already deployed to police services in the United States and Canada, this AFIS provides the speed and accuracy that can help to accelerate the speed in which crimes are solved.

The system is compliant with the European Union's Prum Regulation, which allows the police forces of the 30 signatory countries to compare and exchange data more easily.

The Swedish National Police Board is a long-term customer of Morpho. By choosing the company to upgrade their AFIS, Sweden has renewed their trust in Morpho's advanced biometric solutions.

The convergence to IP is getting more solid in the physical security industry. a&s highlights some updates in worldwide distribution markets and the latest IP drivers which brought about some significant changes to channels.

P networking technologies is not only changing the market and product strategies of manufacturers but also forcing the traditional security distributors to provide more value-added services to the market. During this transitional time, many strong IT product distributors also entered the physical security market. Ingram Micro rolled out a physical security practice in 2010 and it continued to expand its physical security division in 2011 in Canada.

“We’ve already seen traditional IT vendors and distributors make moves into the physical security market.

IBM and Cisco have both made some inroads in this space, and IT distributor Synnex has long dabbled in physical security. But global information technology distributor Ingram Micro is making a big push into physical security in Canada, following the footsteps of its U.S. counterpart…Ingram is positioning itself as more of a value-added distributor in the physical security segment,” said Ingram Micro in a prepared speech.

“The convergence of IT security and physical security is spreading, and it is clear that IP technology will be the driving force behind overall growth in the video surveillance industry,” said John Sullivan, Senior Vice President of Sales, ADI. “Dealers need to embrace this technology and recognize the opportunity for potential growth.”

UPDATES IN WORLDWIDE DISTRIBUTION MARKETS A headline in the distribution market this year is the acquisition of Aasset by TKH to strengthen its expansion in security this March. Aasset

is a leading provider of security solutions and video surveillance, and offers added-value services such as designing of architectures, development of specialized software and sourcing of equipment. TKH is an internationally operating group of companies specializing in creating and supplying innovative systems and networks for the provision of information, telecommunication, electro-technical engineering and industrial production.

The acquisition of Aasset boosted TKH’s operating base, particularly in the French and German security markets. Within the security cluster, TKH made major headway in increasing the synergy between the security companies, through a further clustering of competencies and the focus of sales teams on specific markets. TKH invested heavily in the field of video management and video content analysis particularly. However, postponed traffic infrastructure projects in Europe had a negative impact on growth of TKH’s security sector this year.

Negative news came from the U.K. distribution market.

Norbain announced that its U.K. operation (including export) was acquired by Newbury Investments (UK) from the administrator KPMG. Will Wright, joint administrator at KPMG commented, “Norbain’s business was adversely affected by a decline in orders as customers decided to wait and see if the economy would improve before investing in infrastructure projects. The fall in income was a key factor in the company entering into administration."

STRONG GROWTH FOR EXTERNAL ENTERPRISE STORAGE IMS Research forecasts strong growth for the world market for external enterprise storage platforms used for video surveillance, with an average annual growth rate of 52 percent for storage capacity shipped from 2010 to 2016.

In comparison, internal enterprise storage platforms are forecast to see 36 percent growth over the same period.

Despite the strong growth for both storage platforms, external storage is forecast to displace internal storage as the dominant storage platform in 2014.

The project has been accelerated by increasing demand for a converged solution which not only manages disparate physical security technologies, such as perimeter detection systems, ACS and CCTV, but also allows cyber threats to be raised within the PSIM solution. QUALITY TRAINING TO SECURITY INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS In order to increase general understanding of IP technologies and trigger the market awareness to the benefits of IP, the different channels in physical security all regard training and market education as the most important tool for marketing. On the manufacturing side, IP video leading brands, Axis and Milestone, offer good examples.

Now some traditional security players pick up IP knowledge very fast. In the market, they are seeing the convergence of IP and traditional security sales channels due to the continued training and education. Axis started its partner training program in 2005 and more than 25,000

participants have been trained. “Apart from offering a base choice of programs and an advanced choice, Axis can tailor training programs for larger customer segments, among others. During 2012, strong focus is being placed on offering more diversified training programs that meet the new needs in the market,” said Ray Mauritsson, CEO of Axis Communications.

Some companies started to focus on in-depth training toward IP technology and how it turns to business value.

Milestone worked together with Connex International to create a visionary training initiative for the company’s global network of authorized partners: an in-depth course on value selling. It makes up the ‘backbone’ of knowledge that is important for understanding both the IT and traditional physical security perspectives. “Attendees learn how to apply value selling practices by going through real-world sales situations so they can create consistency in the sales process, to develop a sales/coaching culture and to model sales skills that bring success,” said Lars Thinggaard, CEO of Milestone Systems.

“Milestone sees more ‘green fields’ or brand-new implementation projects — those being built from the ground up for new sites, new buildings or wings — choosing to go all IP with open platforms and comprehensive features. They are putting in the latest in IT networks and understand the value of distributed architecture with central management and remote/mobile access flexibility, standard equipment (as opposed to proprietary) cost efficiency, and future-proof scalability with integrations to other systems.”

The British Security Industry Association (BSIA) also announced earlier the creation of a brand new section of membership exclusively for companies providing quality training to security industry personnel.

School Bus Pilot Program to Ensure Children Safety Over the course of the past year, a pilot program called Student Guardian has been testing out its effectiveness in a few selected towns across America. The program promises to increase the safety of children getting on and off school buses. a&s takes a closer look into what this program can offer.

edflex Traffic Systems, a red light camera company in the United States, integrated Basler IP cameras onto school buses in order to capture and record the license plates of violators who fail to stop when the stop arm from the bus is deployed. The Redflex Student Guardian program, launched in 2011, will be fully funded by the fines collected from the citations issued; tax payers need not worry about going into their own pockets to finance the program. This particular point will definitely garner more supporters for the program.

After all, it is for the safety of America’s children.

The program was created because statistics showed that the presence of cameras significantly reduced traffic violations. Once motorists come to realize that school buses are being equipped with cameras and thus citations can be issued, they will be less inclined to ignore the school buses’ stop arms. By keeping potential offenders at bay, children are less likely to fall victim to vehicular accidents when ascending and descending from school buses.

Under the program, school buses are equipped with high resolution cameras in the front and the rear driver’s side of the bus. The system is activated by the bus’ stop arm; every time it drops, the cameras will start filming and recording the road conditions. In addition, the cameras are designed to monitor three lanes of traffic at all times. If a motorist were to illegally pass the bus, the cameras will film the footage in high-definition and take high-resolution pictures of the license plate and driver.

This system was first implemented because of the enormous amount of illegal passes made by motorists when school buses stopped to pick up or drop off children. Just last year, the Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services conducted the first national survey to evaluate the frequency of this

occurrence. The survey monitored 112,000 buses in 28 states and the results are shocking — around 76,000 illegal passes were recorded by bus drivers in just one single day. This means more than 13 million illegal passes in a regular school year — about 180 days.

As of right now, the program is already being carried out in ten states and there are at least ten more states considering to enroll; the states include Washington, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Texas, Arizona, New J e r s e y, N e w Y o r k , Maryland, North Carolina and Virginia.

C u r r e n t l y, there are two cities in Connecticut implementing this system.

The data collected from the cameras on the buses will let the public know which cities and routes are the most dangerous.

Central Valley will be the first school district in Spokane, Washington to launch this pilot program; the program will run until the end of the school year. This program is a free trail offered by Redflex. After the school year is over and depending on the data collected, the school board will decide whether they want to keep and expand the system or not. Right now, during the pilot run, violators will not receive citations as purpose of the pilot program is to gather data in order to better protect school children. However, this will change once the district decides to keep and use the system. If the district does decide to keep the system, it will only be installed on around ten percent of the district’s buses because of its staggering price. It will cost around US$80,000 to install a system onto each bus (inclusive of administrative costs).

Henry County of Georgia will equip three of their buses with Student Guardian. A young boy was fatally struck by a car while waiting at his local bus stop, just one day

before the governor signed into a law that was supposed to prevent such accidents. Examples like this underscore the importance of security measures that hold offenders accountable for their crimes and in addition can possibly act as a pre-emptive deterrent.

Corpus Christi of Texas is another town that is currently testing out the Student Guardian. Ten buses will be equipped with the system for a 90-day free trial. Corpus Christi town officials often receive complaints from bus drivers as well as motorists concerning violators who ignore the school bus’ stop arm. In February of this year, two motorists and a student were sent to the local hospital because a car was sent spinning into a school bus after being grazed by a car who failed to stop when the stop arm was deployed.

It is not certain whether this pilot program will be short-lived once the trial period is over; however, it is certain that video monitoring does reduce the percentage of accident rates. Despite the initial hefty installation fee, the program will be able to fund itself with the fines collected from violators.

Gaming Tables With HD

While analog systems in casinos have worked well in the past, HD video offers sharp images and clear benefits. However, despite of the crystal clear images, the upfront costs of a complete overhaul with HD deployments remain an obstacle to wider uptake. Also, what is less clear is how users should embrace this technology and what they should expect from it. More education is required. We explore the state and potential of HD deployment in casinos.

HD POTENTIALS IN CASINO Faced with numerous security challenges such as false claims, employee theft, table game scams, money laundering and drugs, casinos around the U.S. are

upgrading their surveillance to ensure customer and employee safety. Currently, many casinos are still tied to analog camera solutions. “Of the tens of thousands of cameras monitoring and recording the 700 plus gaming properties in

North America, we estimate less than 10 percent are currently IP and even fewer are full HD IP,� said John Katnic, VP of Global Gaming at Synectic Systems. The HD migration pace in the gaming industry differs by region. In North

America, the migration is fast. “Most newly built casinos are opening with IP infrastructures and at least a hybrid combination of analog and network cameras. The remaining have yet to make the transition to digital or HD.” “The casino and gaming market is expected to experience a gradual increase between 5 and 10 percent in network video surveillance product sales through 2014 in North America,” said Steve Surfaro, Security Industry Liaison, Axis Communications. “The gaming industry is one segment where the adoption of IP technology has been slower. While this market continues to accept and adopt network cameras, the market share for analog cameras will shrink approximately two to five percent. The Gulf Coast in the U.S. will be a prime target for legacy system upgrades in a few years, especially in Mississippi and Louisiana. Native American gaming in Mississippi and Alabama is also expected to drive considerable growth. The Oklahoma gaming market continues to upgrade from analog to IP with virtually all new installations on the gaming floor using IP video. You even have certain local gaming commissions, like the South Dakota Gaming Commission, who are mandating that any table with US$100 or more limits must be covered by high-definition cameras.”

Avigilon is optimistic about the HD potentials in the gaming vertical.

If we take into account that there are over 500,000 analog cameras operating in North American casinos alone, and the total number of units worldwide likely exceeds one million analog cameras, that translates to a lot of growth potential for HD cameras in casinos,” said Douglas Florence, CPP, Business Development Director of Global Gaming at Avigilon. “The likelihood of HD adoption has improved greatly since 2007 when we first saw a few Native American casinos install their first megapixel or HD cameras on table games.”

Many reasons ignite the increase in HD adoption. For instance, “the improved total cost of ownership for HD systems, the decrease in the cost of storage and the introduction of policies that avoid charging recurring IP licensing costs for operation, “ Florence added.

HD solution is best suited especially where money is being counted out to a player. “It provides much better visual information to the surveillance team over table games to watch card handling, money exchanges, card identification and chip values,” said Surfaro. “In the cash cages and other money handling areas, HD is very well suited due to the capability of identification of denominations on the bills, such as when a dispute exists between the cashier and the patron over an amount received. The use of

According to Paul, entry and exit locations are also hot spots for HD solutions, as most casinos often have excellent relationships with

local authorities and are frequently requested to provide quality footage for the identification purposes for people of interest. This has been a big driver for the adoption of HD. HD solutions might be further used in all areas of casinos wherever the cost is justified by the content being monitored. “In the past, the primary focus for HD solutions started out

at table games,” said Florence.

“However, surveillance directors soon began adding cameras to areas with slot machines and casino cages, as well as restaurants, count rooms, casino entrances and parking areas. Most demonstrations start out at table games and once security directors experience the clarity HD cameras provide, the desire to add more HD product grows. From there it snowballs, casino operation executives learn they can make a more informed decision on a dispute or reduce false liability claims due to the amazing clarity of HD cameras.

The investment pays for itself.”

LEGAL ISSUES In the U.S., regulations require that real-time continuous recording is mandated for all gaming activities

and the minimum duration is seven days. However, many casinos opt for greater retention times for various operational and security reasons.

“Retention rates vary by country, state and what’s being recorded or viewed,” Katnic said. “A few US states, like Wisconsin, require 30 days of recording for all cameras.

Most others, including Las Vegas and other major gaming jurisdictions require a minimum of 7 to 14 days.

Some regulators require 14 days for gaming, cages and count rooms and just a week for slots, parking lots, etc. Singapore and Macau casinos typically require 30 days of retained video for gaming areas.”

Security industry regulations can be a major obstacle for casino operators implementing new technologies.

Many of the regulations are drafted around analog technologies and there are fewer specific requirements in relation to a particular HD resolution such as 720p or 1,080p. “Most regulations and standards were written years ago and evolved around analog video capability,” Florence said. “The standard across most international, regional and local regulations is that the video produces 30 fps to provide real-time monitoring.”

Most operators choose to store 30 fps for most everything, according to Paul. “Nevada requires 30 fps for a minimum of seven days for gaming operations and 2 to 7 fps for non-gaming. Live viewing is always 30 fps. Everything digital is required to be redundant and as fail safe as technically possible.”

Besides fps regulations, redundancy and resiliency are crucial as well. Lost video footages can equate instant fines upwards of $100,000. “Most of the regulators that we come across require some basic standards, most

of which are in regards to resiliency.

We see requirements such as some type of RAID configuration on storage but not specific to RAID 5, RAID 6 or otherwise,” Bartlett said. “There are also stringent requirements in Nevada that require no more than eight gaming cameras to a piece of hardware such as a network switch.

This is in order to avoid catastrophic failure. We have gotten around this requirement with redundant power supplies, fans and the like. Again, the more resiliency, the better for casino applications.”

CHALLENGES Budget remains one of the biggest issues when considering the upgrade to an HD system. In this economy, the best option may be to phase slowly from an analog system to a hybrid system. Providers need to provide a simple, scalable way to make the migration to HD. “Most casinos currently implement a hybrid/IP approach using standard

definition which allows them to leverage off existing analog matrix technology,” Paul said. The new system architecture needs to align itself with the existing system design.

Another challenge with HD is the processing power of the camera, as not all HD cameras are as powerful as manufacturers claimed. “We are seeing HD deployed in the gaming and money areas only. The drivers are the technology itself. We need to maintain a high frame rate with the high definition and on multiple streams,” Bartlett said. “The typical casino would like to have a 10 or 20 megapixel camera that can send multiple streams of 30 fps video and that isn’t going to be for a while.

We are starting to see three and five megapixel cameras and higher frame rates , but are still away from this being a reality. Once the technology 'catches up’ and can meet those demands, I feel you will see a lot more HD deployments.”

Educating and training operators to go digital and

systems and keyboards. Neither situation is a good one,” said Bartlett.

“We have used video scalers such as BARCO and RGB to perform all the converting and scaling for the video.

The video scalers take multiple inputs and convert the signal, whether it is analog or digital, to a DVI output.

Thus, providing the maximum resolution available without the up or down converting.”

TRANSMISSION/ NETWORKING It can be expensive to convert existing analog infrastructure to establish robust and reliable IP infrastructure. “Even adding a few network cameras require a thoughtful, forward-thinking network design and plan,” said John Katnic,

VP Global Gaming at Synectic Systems. “Even if it costs a bit more upfront, engineer a robust network solution that can scale to the projected system size and will provide the resiliency required by regulators.”

In addition, network-based video management requires higher caliber IT-trained technicians to design, configure and maintain.

“And because gaming regulators often prohibit IT departments from touching the gaming network, surveillance departments are often underequipped to manage these IP-based solutions and have to play catch up on the fly,” cautioned Katnic.

The use of multicast routing on the network side in casinos is another thorny issue. “Depending on the manufacturer, there is a lot of multicast

traffic on the networks. This can create huge bottlenecks and communication errors if the network is not designed properly. The byproduct of this is tearing or choppy videos.

Even though most like to blame the networks when things do not work properly, we find that the network is seldom the actual issue,” said Bartlett.

“It is also critical to ensure that, in the casino HD video space, that single mode fiber be installed from the Intermediate Distribution Feed (IDF) rooms to the Main Distribution Feed (MDF) room. This will ensure that 10 GB, 40 GB, and even 100 GB backbones will not be an issue. If multi-mode fiber is installed from the IDF to the MDF and you want to install a 10 GB backbone, the distance will be limited to 100 meters.”

LATENCY Network latency can be caused by a multitude of factors from routing to camera settings. “At the end of the day, casinos that are still using an analog system are typically experiencing about a 60 millisecond delay so no matter what, they will experience a greater delay when they go digital,” said Bartlett. “This latency will be exacerbated by poor network design or improper camera settings or even poor quality cameras with inadequate WDR capabilities. “ Cameras that lack adequate WDR capability will inevitably cause a lot of noise on the video signal. The noise equates to motion/high bandwidth and thus creating high network traffic and storage requirements. “High quality HD cameras are a must in my opinion. I know there are literally thousands of network cameras on the market but there are not that many that can truly meet stringent gaming requirements,” said Bartlett. “It is the responsibility of system integrators to thoroughly test the cameras and network equipment they want to use in order to ensure that regardless of

what the spec sheet says, they can meet the requirements in real life.”

“Latency induced via the encoding and decoding process remains a key issue — not present in analog technologies — and is a reason why some casinos still maintain an analog matrix 'front-end' and utilise their SD digital recording systems solely for playback/review,” Paul said. “This is still a major issue for the adoption of HD in gaming areas for PTZ. For this reason, many casinos are beginning the transition by starting to implement HD in areas such as entry and exit locations and static camera locations [more than gambling tables].”

BANDWIDTH HD cameras recording at 30 fps in HD resolution put huge weights on bandwidth and storage. Different camera manufacturers deal with this issue differently. “Leading IP device manufacturers and their VMS partners offer a variety of ways to efficiently and automatically manage storage, bandwidth and latency by changing camera recording settings

(data rate, resolution, fps, etc.) on the fly based on motion, defined third party alarms or manually initiated VMS macros. However, this is typically up to the selected VMS application to manage. Taking advantage of these types of IP camera functions requires ‘deep’ integration between cameras and VMS and should not be considered a given.

Some cameras offer dual streaming and when fully integrated with VMS, the camera can send a full HD stream to the recorders for optimum playback quality, and simultaneously multicast a second, less bandwidthintensive SD or CIF stream to the monitor wall, or a mobile device to avoid latency or overtaxing available bandwidth,” said Katnic . “In coming years, more IP encoding devices and VMS will support Scalable Video Codec which, rather than producing dual or triple streams for varied usage, produces one full-featured, multi-layered stream that enables clients to subscribe to the stream quality level appropriate for their bandwidth or application.”

Camera features, such as region of interest, generally can be of help in terms of bandwidth reduction, while event triggering applications save storage space. However, these

features are not legally allowed in certain gaming areas. “Most gaming standards require 100 percent motion of video recording in gaming areas, so this is typically not an area where value-based configuration or programming is employed,” Florence said. “Depending on the location of the casino in the world, the percentage of gaming versus security/public areas will vary. In a mega resort, 60 percent of the cameras could be managed in this manner, where parameters of pixels per square inch or square foot are set to create an event-based recording mode.”

“We are typically 'handcuffed' by gaming regulations and seldom, if ever, can use triggering events, loiter modes or lower the resolution for gaming specific cameras,” Bartlett

added. “These may be acceptable for 'back of house' areas but never in money or gaming areas. As drives are getting larger and storage in general is getting cheaper, it does not seem to be an issue as of lately.”

STORAGE AND REDUNDANCY With technology changing and desire to go from two megapixels to 5, 10 or 20 megapixel HD, the amount of storage remains to be a challenge.

“Storage is expensive (30-40 percent of the total surveillance system price), and is directly related to picture quality, which is related to the data rate and retention period for each camera,” Katnic cautioned. “HD IP cameras average 5 to 6 Mbit/second, which is three to four times more

data/storage compared to H.264 encoded analog cameras. HD video requires more servers, software, rack space, electricity, cooling and maintenance. Also, storage servers with high density of 2 to 3 TB drives configured in RAID 5 or 6 take much longer to rebuild following a drive failure, which adds vulnerability to retained data and recordings. Just because you can record in HD doesn’t necessarily mean you should, especially when you have to justify cost/reliability strategy for the HD cameras.”

The different risks associated with IP systems require careful analysis and resiliency planning. “For instance, traditional analog matrix systems will display live video on the analog wall even if the network and/or DVRs go down. Some analog to digital

encoder-based systems will even keep recording when the network fails,” Katnic added. “However, that is not the case with an network camera -based system. When the network goes down, both recorded and live video will be lost if the cameras do not support edge-based storage. All that video will be lost and cannot be recovered.”

“Hybrid systems, which involve greater complexity and reliance on

network technology, have potential risks too, and casinos have expressed concern about being able to meet the mandated regulatory requirements for continuous recording with no gaps in recording. With hybrid solutions, network failures could potentially prevent the operators from accessing playback/reviews, but the analog recording should likely remain unaffected,” Paul said. “Failed DVRs could be easily addressed via

a matrix macro to switch the analog inputs to a standby DVR unit if necessary. Solutions such as matrix switching DVR inputs for 'fail-over' have now been replicated in digital technology; stand-by technologies, clustering technology and cloudbased storage all pool together to allow for redundancy in recording as well as multicast recording to provide true redundancy. This solution should adequately address these concerns.“

AUDIO DEPLOYMENT IN CASINOS Audio recording in casinos might be able to offer extra assistance for detecting and interpreting events.

However, regional privacy laws are what influence the use of audio.

“Audio surveillance is restricted in areas with an expectation of privacy and is also generally prohibited in public areas in North America. For audio surveillance in 'closed' circuits, via telephone or other wired-line communications, authorities must have jurisdiction and are subject to local, state and federal laws,” said Steve Surfaro, Security Industry Liaison of Axis Communications.

Privacy regulations define where audio devices can be used and some jurisdictions require signage advising casino employees and the general public they are being recorded. In general, audio recording cannot be used in covert investigation. “By law, we are only allowed to install microphones in an area if we post warning signs that audio recording is in progress.

“Audio recording regulations in other areas outside of count rooms and security holding offices will vary according to region,” said Florence. “For

Regional privacy laws are what influence the use of audio in casinos. instance, in the U.S., audio recording outside these two areas is not allowed; however, in some casinos in Europe and Asia, audio is recorded in certain areas and for certain games, such as roulette where verbal bets are being made or in South Africa where audio is recorded at casino cashier cage windows during financial transactions.”

The casino industry uses audio recording mainly in two key areas – count rooms and the security holding office. “Some Casinos use audio in “interview” rooms where a suspected cheat or someone claiming injury is interviewed by security,”said Surfaro.

“False injury claims are the largest issue for casinos and so they have been increasing camera counts in “back of the house” areas. These areas, such as the hotel, restaurants and parking area, are typically watched by security

as opposed to the gaming surveillance group.”

Synchronization of the audio and video used to be the biggest challenge.

“Also, there was a tendency to want to install too many microphones,” said Bartlett. “Today, with IP cameras, the majority of the cameras have audio already built in, so we just activate the microphones that we need and the audio is already in sync with the video.”

Currently, the main challenge is that there is no universal consensus pertaining to audio encoding between all the different camera manufacturers,” said Katnic. “Therefore, when choosing a camera make sure the camera supports the audio encoding you are looking for.” Room size, directional versus passive audio and placement of microphones should also be put into consideration.”

CURRENT BOTTLENECKS One of the main challenges in casino gaming environments remains to be the HD PTZ control latency issue. “The expectation continues to be that digital should be superior to analog and therefore, increasing latency for HD PTZ seems to be a backward step,” Paul said. “The number one request is ‘analog-like’ latency for PTZ control with HD PTZ control. I would not actually call this an ‘outrageous’ request, as it is quite expected to want fine responsive control for PTZ activity in a busy gaming environment, but understanding the technology behind HD video and how it is delivered to the user. It is easy to appreciate how this is not a simple hurdle that can be overcome o v e r n i g h t . T h ro u g h o p e r a t o r training, adjusting the HD PTZ cameras to use the lowest latency codecs and correcting network design, we have been able to get customer acceptance on this issue.”

Bit rate and recordings are challenges as well. “In most cases, if an HD camera is streaming at 20 to 50 Mbps, very few would have pockets deep enough to buy the storage required for these types of cameras,” Bartlett added.

Having an IP-based system that can integrate with an existing network goes a long way. Still, IP camera integration/compatibility with video management systems remains a key issue and challenge f o r t h e i n d u s t r y. “ M o s t m a j o r camera and encoder manufacturers are now adopting ONVIF compliance standards for IP device detection, transmission, telemetry and recording, which is making it much easier for integrators and end users to confidently deploy

new IP cameras,” Katnic said.

“Unfortunately, standards like ONVIF and PSIA are evolving and changing constantly and VMS and IP device manufacturers are often developing to different versions or only partially comply with the standards’ specs. Moreover, the standards leave out some very important criteria that can cause a big disconnect with expectations.

For example, how IP cameras and VMS are supposed to manage audio, alarms, a second or third recorded stream and onboard SD memory, are not clearly defined by ONVIF.”

INTEGRATION-FRIENDLY Fewer but better tested and documented changes/upgrades of the cameras would be helpful for system integrators as there are often new compatibility issues popping up in casinos. Also, it is rather imperative that the user and supplier agree on what exactly ‘integrated’ means and precisely define what functions are expected

before choosing a camera and VMS combination, according to Katnic.

“And once settled on a particular camera and firmware version, avoid the temptation to roll out the newest bleeding edge software update without thoroughly testing the new firmware revisions with your existing VMS. Small firmware changes can cause big compatibility problems.”

Having a proprietary solution is not the best thing for casino owners. Hybrid solutions will be an unavoidable path to HD, and systems integrators will have to learn to be something more than just a re-seller of a manufacturer’s equipment to be considered a true systems integrator. “The days of having proprietary casino solutions are soon to be gone and those left standing in the casino space will have the ability to integrate with each other.” Bartlett said.

PROCEED WITH EYES WIDE OPEN There is no doubt that the superiority of HD IP picture quality will charm and convince users to spend what it takes to achieve it. “It is important to remember that just because it’s new IP technology, it doesn’t mean it’s better for every application or that it will do everything that your analog system did,” Katnic said. “At best, they’re different technologies and users are likely to encounter both pros and cons. IP system will not necessarily be as resilient, fast or functional as the old matrix.”

AVIGILON SECURES MUSCOGEE (CREEK) NATION CASINOS, U.S. The Muscogee (Creek) Nation is a federally recognized Native American tribe headquartered in Okmulgee, Oklahoma with a compelling history and strong tribal identity. Responsible for the welfare of more than 20,000 people within its jurisdiction and to support its local economy, the Nation also operates several significant tribal enterprises, including 11 casinos, which are regulated by the Office of Public Gaming.

strict tribal procedures, including high surveillance standards that are more stringent than National Indian Gaming Commission regulations.

“NIGC standards continue to evolve and we want to be well-positioned to lead the change,” said B.J. Waggnor, director of surveillance at the OPG. With 11 casinos bringing in between US$5 to $15 million annually and the larger properties pulling in well over $15 million each year, Muscogee (Creek) Nation faces many security challenges from g a n g - re l a t e d v i o l e n c e , m o n e y laundering, drugs and machine cheats, to employee theft and collusion. “Responsible for the safety and security of all our operations, security personnel monitor all areas

of the casino including the main floor, all cash-handling areas, back of the house, kitchen, break room, and kiosks around the clock,” said Waggnor.

The Avigilon HD surveillance system was also easy to install, a particularly important factor because the process was managed by an internal team of technicians. “We had the surveillance system 100 percent operational in just two days,” noted Waggnor. As an added benefit, the OPG was able to save valuable space in its server room at the One Fire Casino by reducing the number of racks needed for storage by 75 percent.

The casino environment attracts all types of criminality, but for the Muskogee (Creek) Nation, the biggest threat is employee theft. In fact, collusion between employees and patrons, in which employees pay a hand that did not win or stack the deck, costs the casinos the most in lost revenue. “We monitor for employee theft and collusion every day and have a 90 percent investigation success rate,” asserted Waggnor.

As a regulatory arm of the NIGC, the OPG must also ensure that operational procedures are being followed by casino employees. The NIGC outlines Minimum Internal Control Standards, which require all gaming tribes to implement internal

maintain 14 days of archival storage.

control systems to regulate the movement of cash, gaming tables, and slot machine operations. “MICS violations can result in costly fines if not properly addressed, so we rely on the image clarity and search capabilities of the Avigilon system to quickly investigate and report potential violations to avoid being fined,” Waggnor acknowledged.

COEUR D’ALENE CASINO, U.S. SELECTS PELCO

OKLAHOMA CASINOS SELECT AXIS NETWORK CAMERAS As the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma began to expand its casino operations, tribal leaders realized that many of their facilities had outgrown the limitations of their existing analog surveillance technology. In looking to modernize their security system, they sought an open IP-based solution that would provide secure, evidentiaryquality video recordings, operate at 30 fps and would be easy to set up and expand without major expense or disruption of gaming activity.

Choctaw Nation’s own onsite team worked with Axis partners – ConnectionsIT of Santa Rosa, C a l i f o r n i a a n d C a m e r a Wa t c h Technologies of Jackson, Mississippi – to install an array of Axis fixed dome and PTZ network cameras on the casinos’ fiber backbone. The Axis cameras monitor back of house hallways and money areas as well as building exteriors, parking lots and high-stakes gaming areas.

Security teams monitor the cameras 24/7 from surveillance rooms on the casino properties, enabling them to immediately respond to any incidents of theft, customer safety or questionable behavior by patrons or employees. As word spreads of the new surveillance systems, tribal leaders are noting a significant drop

in fraudulent slip-and-fall claims and shortages at the tables and the tills.

The Choctaw casinos’ legacy analog cameras were becoming a hindrance in working with local l a w e n f o rc e m e n t . T h e i m a g e s they captured were of insufficient resolution to be accepted in court.

And because the images were being recorded on VCR tape, they wore out over time, creating difficulties for security teams who had to play back video repeatedly over several days or weeks during an investigation.

Another important feature of the Axis technology was the ability for the network cameras to operate at 30 fps, a standard that exceeded the guidelines set by the National Indian Gaming Commission. Other criteria that favored Axis network cameras were their support of PoE, which allowed the casinos to save installation costs by using a single cable to both power the cameras and transmit the video over the network.

In addition, the selection committee valued that the Axis network cameras supported both M-JPEG and H.264 advanced compression at a full 30 fps, allowing casinos to affordably

With millions of dollars in assets, as well as liability and compliance issues to deal with, the casino’s old security recording system of VCRs and tapes wasn’t cutting it. “Their system was on video tape and wasn’t really benefiting the casino anymore,” said Kevin Jetton, President of A-Tec, system integrator for Coeur d’Alene Casino. “They knew that they had to do some major changes and they decided to go digital.”

The system includes 9,760 matrix switches, the 300 video management system, 5,000 keyboards, LCD monitors, 600 camera licenses, and a mixture of different camera lines and lenses from the previous system, all of which will eventually be transitioned to Pelco solutions.

Cameras are located in the more than 100,000 square feet of gaming space, parking lots, exterior, and convenience store. They also help secure the Circling Raven Golf Club, renowned as one of the Ànest new golf challenges in the region, the nation and the world.

Apprehensive about switching from their previous security system because other casinos in the area had trouble combining systems, Coeur d’Alene wanted to make sure everything worked well before flipping the switch. Testing was done in the early stages of the installation to ensure that the transition would go smoothly.

Channel Restructuring and Market Shifting The worldwide security markets recently got greatly influenced by the economic decline in Europe and the introduction of IP network technologies. These two factors cause the shifting of security markets and restructuring of security channels.

EUROPEAN SECURITY INDUSTRY GETS DIFFICULT Economic trading conditions in Europe have declined during the last 2 years but the security industry has weathered the storm remarkably well, that is until a recent spell of bad news has hit the market. Hitherto, strong companies are now reporting lower revenues and profit and in some cases companies are going into receivership. The Securitas AB Interim Report for the period of January to June 2012 shows slow organic sales growth in North America coupled with "severe market conditions" in Spain and Portugal. According to President and CEO Alf Göransson,"Market conditions in Spain are deteriorating more rapidly than expected and we're leaving some contracts due to the uncertainty around customers’ ability to pay for the security services”. Norbain, one of Europe’s largest distributors of electronic security

products, went into receivership in May this year.

There is no doubt that trading security in Europe is becoming more difficult and will further deteriorate over the next two years. The problem is not going to be solved in the short term, and the only solution for security companies is to stay ahead in the technology race and win more share.

A recent authoritative paper by the European Commission — “Security Industrial Policy - Action Plan for an innovative and competitive Security Industry” — identifies some of the problems and how to tackle them.

In acknowledging the significant potential for market growth, the Commission made the security industry one of the essential parts of the EU 2020 flagship initiative "An Integrated Industrial Policy for the Globalisation Era Putting Competitiveness and Sustainability at Centre Stage." Therein, the commission announced the launch of

a dedicated initiative on a security industry policy. This action plan is the first stepping stone of this dedicated initiative. The overarching aim is to enhance growth and increase employment in the European security industry.

The European companies that will take the major strain caused by a declining market are those that have not positioned themselves to deliver IP network products particularly in the video surveillance and access control markets. This is not just a matter of having leading edge technology, but also to take account of the need to change the routes to market. This technology is changing the channels of distribution in the physical security industry requiring new skills for designing and installing systems.

A ROLE FOR DISTRIBUTORS IN IP SECURITY? There have been major changes across the developed markets of the world in how products reach the end user.

The latest report from Memoori Business Intelligence, “The Physical Security Business in 2012” to be published in October, shows that the value of product passing through the distributor channel has fallen off drastically from over 50 percent in 2006 to around 30 percent in

2011. Their market share has been taken by direct sales to installers/system integrators which has increased to approximately 50 percent in 2011. The installer and system integrator route has been joined by specialists from the IT and communications industry and it would appear that the distributors have lost most of their share to these companies that have partnered with the manufacturers of IP network products.

Whilst these trend appear to be most marked in the developed markets of Northern Europe and North America, similar trends are now being realised in Asia, and at the same time are now taking place in the access control market but as yet it is not as pronounced. Getting IP network products to market is going to be a challenge for distributors and one they will have to meet because it will eventually take 100 percent of the business.

These changes are no so startling when taken over a six year period, but their consequences are now being felt, with the recent exposure of weaknesses in the distributor chain and the major European distributor Norbain’s demise and fall into receivership. Even in a growing market they would have eventually succumbed, it would just have taken longer. IP network products do not lend themselves to the traditional box shifting treatment of analog products and require more sophisticated application skills. Sadly, few distributors have seen the need to work with the manufacturers to acquire the necessary skills. Norbain had lost money during the previous four years trading, but had seen the error of their ways and had instituted an offering called “service plus”. This program embraced integrator/ installer partners, training, service and cloud initiatives, but it was too late for the existing shareholders and

management to pull the company around and in May it went into receivership, but has now found a new owner.

Distributors that have become more IP-savvy, such as the AES Group and Digitalcom in Thailand and Tri-Ed/ Northern in the U.S., have been able to maintain their share by taking on more system integrator duties, especially with regard to system/network design and commissioning. But sadly not all distributors have taken up the challenge.

There is a place for the distributor, but not in the traditional role, at least not for long. Knowledge is paramount, especially in increasingly connected, integrated building and security environments; and bringing together packages that meet these needs and the IT services that they require is a service that they can bring to the table.

Hayden Shu, Editor-in-Chief of asmag.com (former Editor-in-Chief of a&s International), notes that “We are also seeing an increasing number of “hybrids” in Asia — specialist companies distributing systems for technology partners and developing or integrating systems (more software-based) for clients.” This is not dissimilar to the way Controlware, the U.K.-based distributor, operates. The Controlware Group has provided IT communications networking solutions since 1980. During this time, Controlware has accumulated extensive experience in the design, delivery and maintenance of cost-effective IP networks. Since1997 they have also specialized in the integration of applications such as IT security, storage and video surveillance systems. They work closely with installer and integrator partners to provide security systems for users from all vertical markets. Their value added services range from consultancy, product advice and supply through to systems design, project management, commissioning, maintenance and installation through their channel partners.

Distributors in the wider definition have a very important role to play, but they will have to sharpen their game if they are going to partner with the manufacturers and deliver what their clients need.

SHIFTING OF SECURITY MARKETS Whilst the strategies discussed above will ensure that European manufactures maximise their opportunity to win market share in Europe, they will also radically improve their prospects in other geographical markets.

The geographic distribution of sales is shifting to Asia, delivering the highest rate of growth, increasing its market share and there is a strong pick up in the USA. Asia will continue to increase its share of the market because penetration levels are much lower. In China, penetration is almost an order of magnitude smaller than North America, so there is much latent potential still to be exploited.

In the rest of Asia (including India), the penetration chart shows that this area has a lower level of penetration than China. There are a number of countries in this group that have large populations such as India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam; and these countries have dragged down the penetration to US$1.9 per capita.

However Japan, Australia, South Korea and Singapore have much higher penetration of security on a parallel to western countries. Countries that have a long term potential to develop their latent potential include India, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. Asia in general and China particularly are markets that western companies need to take a long term approach because they are difficult markets to penetrate, whilst North America is more welcoming.

The third factor that needs close attention is that strong

growth does not spread right across all vertical markets and indeed the ownership of security in some verticals is changing. In homeland security, the responsibility of security has shifted from the police and military to the operator owners of the various public infrastructures such as energy, water and transport. In the energy sector, legislation has been brought in to ensure that they are protected from security threats and theft.

In North America, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation — Critical Infrastructure Protection regulations require that utilities tightly control access to their most important infrastructure. Since the security benefits of video surveillance can be significant, companies and organizations are either voluntarily looking to deploy this technology, or those compelled to do so by regulations, are considering a variety of strategies to justify the expense and achieve cost savings.

One of these is to look at indirect cost savings that can be viewed as return on investment for capital expenditures on security network infrastructure.

In the U.K., video surveillance is being embraced to

counter metal theft, which is a big problem. Copper, which fetches a high (and rising) price, is especially appealing to thieves. The rail industry in the U.K. alone lost $67.6 million worth of metal in the last three years, and companies are spending at least $18.9 million each year on security to prevent metal theft.

New technology and advances in IT networking products are the most important factors that are driving the need to change business models in order to take advantage of the business opportunities that they can deliver. A good example here is that high capacity wireless data networks have brought down the cost of infrastructure to the point where the ability to provide comprehensive coverage is practical and cost-effective. The use of video surveillance as a public safety and security tool is growing. Partially, that is because homeland security regulations and initiatives around the world are driving deployment, but it is this new technology that is enabling it to become cost-effective.

Luckily, our market success has not been affected by the macroeconomic turbulences in Europe so far. In contrast, we have been increasing overall growth with our organization as well as market shares in local markets.

Nevertheless, effects of these turbulences have forced us to restructure our market approach in Scandinavia and re-adjust our European expansion strategy. A direct effect of the economic slow-down has been increasing difficulties to reinsure large accounts through our credit insurance provider, leaving us with more risk on some accounts. A further effect is that market players are reacting to the crisis by increasing price competitiveness. This is putting margins under pressure on the sell-side while declining buying power of the Euro, and is diminishing margin potentials on the side of manufacturing and purchasing.

In order to spread the risk of individual economies and to broaden the opportunity base, we have been increasing our efforts to internationalize our business vertically by new markets and horizontally by new product ranges for specific needs and sales channels. With an overall more optimistic short-term business perspective in the APAC region, in contrast to America, we have been focusing on markets outside of Europe like Australia, Japan, and India.

HD-SDI is definitely in focus when we are looking at markets with a large installed base of analog CCTV systems such as in the U.K., Germany, France or Australia, taking advantage of decreasing project and deployment costs due to the re-usage of legacy wiring.

Additionally, a large body of small and medium-sized installers is still having issues with planning, projecting 60

and deploying IP-based video surveillance systems in small and medium-sized projects. These types of projects are so far modestly affected by indecision or postponement.

On the other hand, further development of easy-todeploy consumer-oriented IP systems is strengthening our offer to a vast base of do-it-yourself applications.

All the European countries suffer directly or indirectly from the result of economic turndown. In IP surveillance, the demand is created by new investments. However, they require some vision of stability to emerge on the markets. The markets interfere with each other and even though there are no direct trade connections, the investors are less willing to undertake new investments.

All these factors result in much lower market dynamics.

Although the security market grows in proportion to the growth of gross national product (GNP), the rising demand for intrusion alarm system is also becoming more apparent as some developing countries are starting to be concerned with security issues in regard to other verticals and threats from terrorism.

“In general, the security market grows along the GNP growth.

However, in some cases, we see higher growth rates; as an example, India, following some massive terror events has shifted investment in security well beyond the normal growth rate. The events in Sinai may indicate that Egypt may also shift its focus to invest more in security,” said Hagai Katz, GM of Magal Security Systems. “We see uptake in the last two years in Africa, Mexico and

Leon Langlais, Product Management Director of Tyco Security Products, mentioned, “Forecasts for growth in the intruder alarm segment around the globe show the greatest growth for detectors in outdoor applications, an area where analysts from IMS Research predict a compound annual growth rate of nine percent through 2015. We expect to see major growth in wireless products as well as for hybrid solutions that take advantage of the ease of wireless installation and the high performance and capacity of a hard wired panel.” Langlais further stated that due to the fact that the technology of wireless systems greatly surpasses the traditional hurdles of battery life, range and reliability, they will become increasingly more prevalent in the commercial space. “IMS is predicting a compound annual growth rate of nearly five percent through 2015 for indoor wireless detectors.”

CAUSES OF FALSE ALARMS False alarm rate has always been the greatest issue in the intruder alarm detector industry. To cope with the drastic growth of the intruder alarm detector industry, discovering ways to minimize the false alarm rate is a must. Several major intruder alarm detector manufacturers are constantly seeking ways to neutralize false alarm rate issues.

The factors that contribute to the triggering of false alarms vary depending on the overall installation environment. “Choosing the right detector for the application is vital to ensuring performance. As it fulfills higher security requirements, a Grade 3 detector, used for example in banks, should not be utilized in a Grade 2 application such as small shops. The nearly 50 percent increase in sensitivity required to achieve Grade 3 performance could lead to false alarms in a Grade 2 installation.” said Reimer.

Incorrectly installed sensors also have the potential of generating a false alarm. “Incorrectly installed sensors are at the heart of many problems experienced by intruder systems. Door contacts must be well aligned to send the proper signal to the panel, and motion sensors need to be both adequate in power and sensing technology as well as installed correctly to ward off false detection or even misdetection. For example, areas that receive direct sunlight are not ideal candidates for motion detection,” said Langlais.

His solution for the issue was simply through careful installation and correct execution of the user’s manual. Langlais further commented on wireless sensor installation, “On the wireless side, sensor installation is still of utmost importance. Some wireless peripherals are equipped with an LED that blinks when the wireless device is located in an appropriate location, ensuring optimal placement of that peripheral, requiring minimal training on the technicians' side.”

Other than making sure that the detectors are properly installed into a system, there are still elements that need to be paid attention to while choosing the system that fully caters to your needs. “Installers should also choose a wireless system carefully as wireless strength, range and battery life also become considerations to the overall success of the installation and the life of the system,” said Langlais.

As installation process isn’t the only element that might lead to a false alarm, the overall technical environment can also compromise a s e c u r i t y i n t ru s i o n s y s t e m i f

neglected. “The more robust wireless systems are less vulnerable to noise and interference from other appliances and systems at the customer premises no matter how well the system was installed.

If a sensor goes offline due to interference, the system will generate a false alarm,” said Langlais.

REDUCING FALSE ALARM RATES As far as the causes of false alarm rates are concerned, manufacturers also have strategies to counteract them. “All the information collected by these various sensor elements is fed into a microprocessor that analyzes the data using a complex signal processing algorithm we call Sensor Data Fusion,” said Reimer.

In terms of reducing false alarm rates to a minimum, Tyco also has its own maneuvers. “The majority of false alarms in an intruder detector system can be attributed

to three main factors that are easily corrected in almost every installation,” Langlais mentioned. “Errors in installation and programming, such as the incorrect placement of a motion sensor, can cause repeated false alarms if the sensor ’s beam is misaligned even a few degrees.

Proper usage of dual technology motion sensors, where both the PIR and microwave sensors need to detect movement to alarm are also extremely effective at reducing false alarms.”

Langlais further stated that it is important for the end-users to take responsibility for reducing false alarm rates as well. “Although the system should be as easy to use as possible, proper training of the homeowner on the system is also crucial to the success of the installation.”

While environmental factors such as weather conditions could be a pain in the neck, Jonathan Murray, MD of Senstar (Magal Security Systems), believed that such a problem can be resolved through installing a system that is based on adapting technology.

tions of the temperature, unstable weather conditions can no longer be a variable that yields the possibility of triggering a false alarm.

BRITISH AND EUROPEAN INTRUDER ALARM STANDARDS The intruder alarms will need to be designed or modified to accommodate the EN40141:206 standard which is in accordance with PD6662:2010 and BS8243 for police calling systems starting Jun. 1, 2012.

It’s necessary for the intruder and hold up alarm systems to be installed a c c o rd i n g t o t h e f u n d a m e n t a l standards accepted by insurance companies and to be eligible for getting responses from the police, as countries in Europe often have different requirements that the alarm systems need to comply with.

The majority of European alarm suppliers and installers are attached to a series of British standards in order to ensure the reliability of alarm design, installation and maintenance. Standards such as frequency limitations and emission limitations all have significant impacts on the installers and suppliers. “European and British alarm standards have led the way in introducing catch performance and false alarm immunity performance requirements based upon real world security applications and risk level,” said Reimer.

“While we feel that we are able to very clearly differentiate our products performance in these and many other regards, the minimum requirements that these standards require will help the industry improve upon its reputation for providing a reliable product to our customers.”

Networking and Integrating Legacy Perimeter Security Systems Perimeter intrusion detection systems (PIDS) have come a long way since it was developed some 40 years ago, from the basic point-to-point wiring to the current trend of IP networking, PIDS have matured considerably.

Along with the development of IP networking, it is now possible to cover vast areas, even air and water. These advancements allow perimeter security detection systems to shift from using individual products to deploying a combination of different types of detectors and sensors, which are then controlled through a networked central control system. In this way, the cost of expensive wiring and manpower is significantly reduced. Network integration appears to be a straight forward and effective complete solution for legacy perimeter security systems; however, oftentimes different products from different manufacturers are used, and consequently there are incompatibility issues.

DRY CONTACTS: TRIED, TESTED, AND TRUE?

The original and basic solution, dry contacts, employs a simple and elementary method that uses the electrical wires (dry contacts) from each processor (node); the paired wires from each node are woven into a braid that “travels" directly to a control room. In the control room, a panel with many pairs of green and red lamps displays the status of each segment (segments are usually 50 to 200 meters/150 to 600 feet in length.). This solution is not practical for large sites, but works for small sites.

In spite of this, the network must provide 100 percent reliability since response time is almost always critical. Fortunately, the bandwidth requirement is usually low because most of the filtering is done locally and only the final results are

companies develop their own proprietary display panels; it is a real challenge to integrate these proprietary sensors' systems with the command and control systems of third party manufacturers.

INTEGRATION METHODS CONVENTIONAL INTEGRATION METHODS

There are two main approaches to integrating PID systems with head-end/control systems: The traditional method — ▲ Full SW Integration with 3rd Party This “good old-fashioned” non-network method is based on dry contacts where the wires from the processors connect directly to the thirdparty's control system.

Full integration method — In this method, integration software is used to translate information from the networked sensors to the control display. Leading PID sensor manufacturers usually provide integration modules (SDK or API) that allow programmers to create tools to allow control systems to "understand" the data.

This method offers an easy and complete integration whilst minimizing hardware requirements.

COMBINED METHODS

A mishmash of methods or partial implementations: Network and dry contacts hybrid — In this method, the network collects all the information from the processors and thus all the benefits as mentioned in

the Transition to Network section, such as remote access, two-way communication, etc. are realized.

However, signals from the networked sensors are not “translated” via SDK/API tools — which allow for direct communication with control display computers — this is because many system integrators want to save the time and hassle of working together with programmers to create SDK/API tools. To circumvent the need for program writing, the network signals are converted into simple dry contacts. This is achieved through a software controlled hardware panel, which effectively takes network signals and converts them to dry contacts "0" or "1" outputs. These output signals are input into the control system the old fashioned way, through paired wires, via the dry contacts method.

E v e n t h o u g h t h i s t e c h n i q u e s e e m s a w k w a rd and perhaps outdated, it is still in demand today, particularly because no time or money is spent on programming efforts, and implementation can be done in a relatively short amount of time. The main drawback to this method is the need for additional dedicated hardware, which acts as a go-between for the sensors’ network and control system.

Partial integration using software — In this method, the command and control system performs some of the functionality, such as full interface to real-time alarms; however, none of the technical functionalities are “translated,” these functionalities have to be performed via an application from the PIDS manufacturer.

IIn the th eventt off an emergency, effective ff ti mass notification tifii ti iis iimperative. ti W Whether h th h man-made d events t such as the Sept. 11th terrorist attacks, the shootings at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), or natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, these tragedies brought forward the pressing need for effective mass notification. According to IMS Research, Mass Notification System (MNS) sales in North America alone exceeded US$1.2 billion in 2010 and have emerged as a significant source of revenue for the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s leading suppliers of fire and security equipment. In this issue, a&s looks at how this rapidly growing market has evolved and the direction it is developing in as a response to tragic events that triggered awareness and prompted legislation.

ass notification is the concept of notifying large amounts of people in emergency situations, and has existed in our society for decades.

From church bells to telegraphs, radios, sirens and public address systems, MNS seeks to reduce the risk of human casualties. Hence, MNS refers to a collection of methods used to broadcast messages to one or many groups of people to notify them of a pending or existing situation so that they may seek the best way to protect themselves.

Inadequate notification during emergency situations that resulted from inadequate systems or methods can have potentially disastrous consequences. For instance, on Sept.

11, 2001 when the World Trade Center in New York was attacked, traditional telecommunications were stretched and overloaded, and communications between emergency services personnel were limited by a lack of interoperability between the departments. Consequently, many fire-fighters lost their lives as they were unable to receive the warnings that police officers received from the NYPD helicopters.

Similarly, while Virginia Tech already had a MNS in place that included email and text notifications, it lacked a cohesive plan for implementation. Consequently, no warnings were sent out until two and a half hours had passed after the initial shootings. Furthermore, even when the warnings were sent out, they failed to reach the targeted audience as most students and staff were unable to check emails or mobile devices in a timely manner.

Next, when Hurricane Katrina, a Category 5 hurricane struck New Orleans, it completely destroyed

the existing emergency communication systems, including power stations, internet servers, mobile phone towers and 911 services.

Furthermore, the federal relief workers’ satellite phones lacked interoperability even when they did work. Consequently, communication throughout the rescue process was largely dependent on a few amateur radio stations, such as WWL Radio which broadcasted from a closet.

MNS CODES REGULATE THE INDUSTRY IN THE U.S. The demand for a comprehensive MNS is loud and clear. “A study by the International Disaster Institute estimated that 60 percent of people that lose their lives in an emergency situation do so because they did not know what to do. This has been proven out in recent tragedies at major universities and government buildings,” said Mark Anderson, Product Marketing Manager for PA systems in the U.S.,Bosch Security Systems. Unfortunate events that resulted in mass casualties pushed for the regulation of MNS. For instance, “The U.S.’s Clery Act is a prime example of a trend in

public policy-making that will likely continue. National legislation such as this will ultimately drive adoption of similar measures at the State level. And the ripple effect will roll out to not just state universities, but private colleges and eventually, local school districts,” said J.R. Sykes, VP of Contract Sales at Life Safety Designs.

Specifically, codes such as the NFPA National Fire Alarm and Signaling Systems Code 2010, UFC 4-021-01 and UL 2572 in the U.S. outlined the requirements of MNS that end users have to adhere to. According to Ted Milburn, VP of Marketing at Cooper Industries, “The codes have to be adopted at different levels by the individual states in the U.S., whether it is the 2007 or 2010 code. The adopted codes then affect how MNS is implemented in that particular state. There is a lot of movement in the codes, which is now beginning to address how mass notification is supposed to interact with the public and how systems are supposed to interact with each other. So when we come to talking about interoperability between the different MNS, the codes really start to define that. So everyone

from manufacturers to end users is looking at the codes for guidance.”

First, the 2010 edition of NFPA 72 expanded its scope of coverage beyond alarm systems to include MNS as a requirement, with specifications on intelligibility and coverage beyond the walls of the building to include the outdoor environment.

According to Anderson, “the biggest factor impacting the new technologies and equipment required for mass notification in North America has been the sweeping changes made

to the 2010 version of the NFPA 72 code. These changes extend the scope of NFPA 72 beyond fire alarms to include other life-safety systems.

One major change is the addition of specific requirements to indicate the existence of an emergency situation and communicate necessary information to facilitate an appropriate response.”

N e x t , t h e U F C p ro v i d e s t h e design, operation and maintenance requirements of MNS for the U.S. Department of Defense facilities.

According to Sykes, “UFC has been around for some time and was really the vanguard in MNS installation and standards guidance, [but its] limitation as a bridge between the military and commercial/collegiate/ industrial arenas has been that it was created out of a different mindset and with operational considerations that aren’t typically found in commercial settings.” Finally, the UL 2572 provides equipment testing and performance standards for mass notification control units and

IT’S ALL ABOUT CODES WHEN IT COMES TO THE MNS MARKET IN THE U.S. Interestingly, the codes contribute to the rapid growth of the MNS market, instead of hindering it as some would expect regulations to. According to Ted Milburn, VP of Marketing at Cooper Industries, the codes serve as a guide and standard for MNS. “We think that standardization is the right way to go as it guarantees the reliability of the system. Moving forward, we make sure that our products are in line with the codes,” said Milburn. By specifying the essential requirements of MNS, most end users find that their current systems are inadequate and they seek out professionals to assist them in upgrading their system to comply with the codes, thereby contributing to the growth of the industry.

On the other hand, MNS codes drove innovation in the manufacturing sector. As Rick Tiene, VP of Homeland Security Solutions at Alertus Technologies noted, the current updated versions of the codes attempt to provide guidance regarding newer alerting technologies. “Standardization is a welcome and necessary process to ensure that the products and services provided in the area of MNS are of the highest quality and evolved from best practices,” mentioned Sykes.

For instance, Alert Beacons from Alertus are highlighted as an effective

in-building alerting solution in Chapter 24 of the NFPA-2010 handbook on Emergency Communication Systems.

“The solution offers greater intelligibility than conventional public address systems and is practical for retrofitting older facilities with reliable wireless options or simple single line integrated Power-over-Ethernet (PoE),” said Tiene.

On the same note, Bosch is updating its Praesideo MNS to include UL 2572 compliance. Mark Anderson, Product Marketing Manager for PA Systems in the U.S., Bosch Security Systems said, “This system will support the performance requirements in NFPA 72. These include not just the North American codes but also international and off-shore codes like SOLAS and EN54. Other important end-user requirements are full redundancy, including cabling, automatic backup amplifier switching and backup 48-VDC power.”

Hence, J.R. Sykes, VP of Contract Sales at Life Safety Designs considered the inclusion of MNS in NFPA 71-2010 “a big boost to MNS systems and their ‘validation’ as a life safety system. There was a real need in non-military installations of MNS systems for guidelines on exactly how to design, install, inspect and maintain

these very complex systems. Over time, these new chapters will continue to evolve as practical lessons and technological advancements require updated material to address the rapidly changing MNS environment.” At the same time, it should be noted that it will take time for the new regulation to be fully reflected in the MNS market.

David Cook, COO of Code Blue said, “Although it is too soon to see the specific changes in private organizations' incident response plans, we are getting word from our market that their plans are being modified because of the NPFA 71-2010 changes and the focus is around mass notification enabling through their existing fire control panels.” Code Blue, for instance, provides an IP Audio Interface (IAI) that enables an existing fire control panel alert to be sent to campus MNS.

TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT AND MASS NOTIFICATION MNS has evolved along with technological advances. As Rick Tiene, VP of Homeland Security Solutions at Alertus Technologies noted, “The past ten to fifteen years has seen an evolution in alerting technology.” The simple tone or siren devices were for many years the state of art for static indoor and outdoor warning. Later, strobe lights were incorporated to make MNS more effective for those who are hard of hearing. However, it is the “leveraging software and hardware advancements [that] has enabled more effective alerting solutions. Email and text messaging systems have become popular and desktop pops allow every computer screen to be turned into an alerting station,” said Tiene.

“If you look at the fastest growing part of MNS, it is the technology surrounding personal notification devices. It is almost second nature to everyone to use smartphones and as an MNS provider, you have to deploy that methodology into your solution.

That is the most rapidly changing part of MNS – how does the individual receive information. However, you can’t base you MNS on just one method. It really comes down to risk analysis,” noted Milburn.

Furthermore, David Cook, COO of Code Blue, highlighted the growing integration of MNS technologies. Cook said, “New technologies coming to the market in the past year have been related to MNS becoming integrated with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)’s public mass notification system, or Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS).”

instance, is an authorized alerting authority that enables two-way warning between the public system and private organization. Furthermore, Cook listed mobile technology as a key component in a holistic approach to mass notification, with systems allowing the intelligent dispatch of information across multiple different platforms.

MNS MIGRATES TO IP The migration to IP is well underway in the security industry and it is happening in the MNS market as well. In terms of how the transition to IP-based products has affected MNS solutions, Sykes said the migration to IP-based products “has provided manufacturers, installers and end users with a new way of capitalizing on infrastructure that is already in place and a redundancy for legacy systems that were designed as a wireless installation.” For instance, “IP-based equipment has started to take hold in various marketplaces such as higher education, where customers are looking to piggyback on existing infrastructure to incorporate various MNS component,” continued Sykes.

At the same time, Cook said, “MNS providers have to realize that even though progress is being made towards IP, a substantial base of analog systems exists in fire alarm and

emergency communications. Installers need to realize that before going into an IP-only MNS system.”

MARKET AND INDUSTRY OUTLOOK While the global economic slowdown has affected the MNS industry alike, tragic events that resulted in mass casualties often triggered MNS awareness. “When events of that nature occur, the discussion of MNS comes up and focus is shifted, in part, on how to better handle those types of situations going forward,” said Sykes. There are three main vertical markets in which MNS is growing rapidly: campuses, health care and municipalities. In these areas, end-user requirements are defined through risk management and interoperability of the MNS infrastructure. “For instance, in a health care facility, the risk of air-borne diseases needs to be factored into the design of its MNS,” said Milburn.

In terms of regional growth, Milburn listed the U.S. as the largest market for MNS. “The U.S. has 10 years of awareness for MNS and in some facility types, federal law now mandates MNS,” said Milburn.

“Hence, we are seeing a larger market in the U.S. compared to other regions.”

Layering for Effective Mass Notification There are various ways to reach a target audience today. In an age of multiple contact means, end users tend to have one or several methods of mass notification in place already. Relying on only one method is risky at best and disastrous at worst. Hence, end users often have several mass notification methods purchased from various vendors over the years, and they would prefer to build upon their existing systems. Consequently, such end-user needs and their specific requirements create challenges in implementation. In this section of our Special Feature, a&s looks at the MNS solutions offered by the industry, and how these solutions overcome challenges in implementation and operation.

LAYERED MNS Effective mass notification today often requires communicating with people spread over large areas, both indoors and outdoors. Ted Milburn, VP of Marketing at Cooper Industries summarizes MNS into three types of solutions – personal, indoor and outdoor. “Initially, there was no integration and even today, there are not a lot of unified solutions pulling all three solutions together.

I think that is the direction MNS is going in the near future, but right now there are not a lot of solution providers that interoperate with each other,” said Milburn.

A layered approach is important.

For instance, while personal communication devices are well saturated in society today and are an effective means of mass communication, depending solely on it for emergency communication is risky. “It is important to note that we cannot assume that sending out critical information to personal communication devices will necessarily mean that all PDA and smart phone owners will get

CHALLENGES IN IMPLEMENTATION M o s t p l a c e s a l re a d y p o s s e s s various methods of mass notification that had been installed over the years and many would prefer not to have to abandon their previous investments. “From a cost perspective, the ability to utilize and capitalize on existing infrastructure, to add on layers of MNS over time and the backwards compatibility of new product offerings to integrate with legacy systems are ways to mitigate the cost of MNS installations,” said J.R. Sykes, VP of Contract Sales at Life Safety Designs. Accordingly, Sykes listed marrying the disparate systems into a common protocol that is managed by the MNS server as the “real challenge” when developing a centralized activation portal for institutions that may already have several systems in place.

Florida State University (FSU), for instance, already had 32 methods of emergency communication delivery when Siemens was brought in to develop and implement a comprehensive MNS for the University.

According to Junker, the challenges

It is important to note that we cannot assume that sending out critical information to personal communication devices will necessarily mean that all PDA and smart phone owners will get the message. related to the complexity of this project were twofold: “Our mandate, for the sake of redundancy and making the most of past investments, was to design a system that kept the majority of ‘head end’ components in place while incorporating the array of third party equipment and software into a seamless architecture managed by our dedicated MNS server.”

In response, Siemens provided a solution that “leveraged existing infrastructure investments by interfacing with current communication capabilities to reach people” and in particular, “a integrated, multi-modal approach combining different communication layers into a central activation solution/portal ensuring streamlined activation and consistency across message layers,” said Junker. Moreover, Siemens provided the University with an “ez button” that reduces the initiation of the alert system from upwards of twenty minutes to less than two minutes, if necessary.

At the same time, distributor and systems integrator Life Safety Designs highlighted the importance of standardizing message inputs into common languages such as CAP, HTML, XML, SMS and SMTP. “Additionally, the GUI interface the end user works from has to be capable of simplifying the MNS messages they want to broadcast with “one-touch/one click” action buttons that instantly broadcast the alert through every layer of MNS that’s available – wide area, indoor and personal alerting,” mentioned Sykes.

Finally, it is essential that the MNS in place is able to provide intelligibility. Intelligibility, or the ability for people to understand what they are hearing clearly, is a requirement new to many system integrators. “Loudness does not equal intelligibility, and in many cases they work against each other,” s a i d M a r k A n d e r s o n , P ro d u c t Marketing Manager for PA Systems in the U.S., Bosch Security Systems.

Also, “the system integrator needs to understand, for example, what will be tested and who will test it, what sound pressure level (SPL) is required to overcome any ambient conditions, and also the right products for the right coverage, such as sound in the right places. Lastly, the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) is responsible to make sure the testing is complete and that the system passes,” added Anderson.

CHALLENGES FACED BY END USERS Some of the top challenges end users face are emergency alert system cost and throughput.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT In the MNS market, ongoing legislation will provide direction for the industry. “The enactment of legislation that impact various segments of commercial, educational and industrial institu-

tions to institute or provide mass notification will be a definite revenue driver. Code updates and listing requirements will flesh out best practices and encourage all manufacturers to continue maintaining product quality,” mentioned Sykes.

“The new NFPA standard will take a few years to roll out across North America. I believe by late 2013 or early 2014 most states will have adopted this new standard. In general, these systems will continue to become more flexible and easy to use with additional applications to social media notification systems,” added Anderson. Also, “innovations in design and the manufacturing process should work to help reduce the cost of not just an initial installation, but ongoing system maintenance and servicing as well,” said Sykes.

Furthermore, Junker added that MNS are a prominent component of Intelligent Response systems, which aims to provide improved response mechanisms in face of incidents, “since they enable many of the error-prone manual procedures to be eliminated through automated functionality.”

For Cook, the future MNS will communicate more “relevant” information based on what role you play and where you are at. “For instance, a mass notification message for students is not necessarily t h e s a m e m e s s a g e f o r f a c u l t y.

Additionally, MNS recipients that are physically located nearer to the event should be notified first since MNS communication can take time as communication congestion takes place. As efficiencies in an organization’s incident response plan improve, so will the need of MNS,” said Cook.

Considering cost, cloud computing is immature in our region and therefore the relevant setup and managing cost is quite high. Though cloud computing improves manageability and requires less maintenance, it is not easily accepted by security sensitive customers. As cloud computing runs and stores user's data and software over a network, it is hard for a security SI to prove and justify that the storage is 100 percent safe. We believe that DVR or NVR will still [be favored by] end users in the future and only large enterprises will consider the change to cloud computing because they have more resources budgeted for system maintenance and operation.

The flooding last year have raised awareness for cloud computing and that’s the main consideration for companies right now as they’re afraid there will be floods occurring again this year. For example, some factories were flooded for 3 months and had to relocate somewhere else. That is where we come in because when they relocated they have to rebuild every solution and that’s what they contact us for. I think the infrastructure is ready for cloud computing because it doesn’t take much bandwidth to do it, unlike IP cameras where you have to get a large bandwidth to transfer the data from one place to another.

t is an interesting trend. People will definitely focus more and more on cloud business because it is an interesting technology. I remember a time when people are afraid to install a DVR in a corner shop because if someone were to take the DVR away, all evidence would be lost, but cloud computing would enable users to store away relevant information.

However, there are two generations here: the older generation is always afraid to put away relevant information into a network, while the younger generation does not really care about this. There is also a difference between the types of information needed to be stored away. For instance, a bank network organization would not agree to cloud computing whereas corner shops or residential or health care would not really care. While banks are already working with cloud, they use a very closed, centralized system.

In terms of the infrastructure, it of course has to grow proportionate to the interest of the people. On the other hand, there are a few other trends that I find very interesting and I have noticed it at IFSEC: it is using the camera as more than a tool to stream videos. The clear trend is to make the camera a much more intelligent tool so that you can apply more advanced video analytics, decentralized your VMS solutions onboard of the camera, use the camera as a PIR and for a lot more security applications than in past. The reason is that the processors are becoming much more powerful and smaller, which enables you to do more.

Success for Secutech India and Intersec 2012 Messe Frankfurt offers the security and technology sectors access to expanding regions of the world with its seven trade fairs.

hree out of the seven trade fairs in the Messe Frankfurt portfolio of events for safety and security were held successfully in the first half of 2012.

The well-established events — Intersec in Dubai from Jan. 15 to 17 and Secutech in Taipei from Apr. 18 to 20 — confirmed their position as the leading trade fairs for the sector in the region. Along with the successful première of Secutech India in Mumbai from Mar. 1 to 3, Messe Frankfurt and its local partner, Asian Business Exhibition & Conferences Ltd., succeeded in establishing a trade fair in the expanding Indian safety and security market.
