[editor's letter] Three yems. Tft's 156 weeks, 36 issues printed (and 36 sleep­ deprived print weeks), 22 tearful moments (some happy, some sad, and once when I almost poked my eye out with my laptop power coro at 2 a.m.}, four CrackBerrys used and abused, 62 straight hours I went with zero sleep, countless parties, five kill-me-now hangovers, four aoditional 944 cities launched, 38 parking tickets, dozens of new friends made, hundreds of new hands shaken, one superstar intern who refused to leave my side and left me with no choice but to eventually hire her (love you, Teri!), and a partridge in a pear tree. What a roe it's been since I joined 944 three years ago this month. The magazine biz ain't for those who prefer the 9-to-5 rat race before calling it a day with a Hot Pocket and some Oprah on TiVo. It's a different kind of race - one filled with immense pressure, never­ ending deadlines, extreme highs and lows, sacrmce. public scrutiny and constant change. Working in this industry really should be measured in dog years, which means I have actually been here for 21 years. Yet I haven't aged a day. Weird But the rewards of this lffe are far, far greater - at least for me. 944 is a different animal. Not everyone "gets it" (or cares to) and God knows not everybcdy loves it. That's fine by us. Yet there is something to be sa<J for how far this magazine has come over the years and the direction it's headed. To have a front-row seat to witness - and participate in - this growth and maturation has been a real thrill and honor. I've grown wiser, my skin has grown thicker, and I have developed a deep admiration fOf my colleague Sarah Goitz, who recently braved a chilly Vespa ride at 1 a.m. during a particularly rough print week in search of a classy double-oottle of wine for our team. That's love. But enough of my mushy sentiments. I have been here long enough to know you don·t flip through 944 for fuzzy feel-goods. You·re here for the parties, the pretty pictures, beautiful people and updates on the latest, coclest haps and people making your city tick. Suffice it to say we·ve taken care of all the above once again with this issue. July is all about two things: 1) Del Mar race season. and 2) design. As the official media sponsor of the races once again. we assembled an essential bible on everything you need to know to enjoy the season in style, as well as a stunning fashion spread sure to gamer inspiration for the most important accessory of Opening Day: hats. We also caught up with four emerging local designers in different fields connected by a common passion for seeing San Diego grow and thrive; plus we sat down with renowned architect Richard Meier.
