Hello there! I am An-guo Liu, you can also call me Acro. I am an Industrial Design student from Taiwan. After entering the field of Industrial Design, observing and questioning on daily facts help me gaining the design taste. I met design since I was 18, and I seem it as my life’s main focus once I step in. The most charming part of the design to me is showing the world new forms, new ideas, new concepts, new possibilities, to let people having reflections, interactions or even discussions.

The challenge to me is to strike the chord with people out there with design. It is difficult, but, truly fascinated me. Someone would say that it is the surprise when the initial idea emerges or the sense of satisfaction about the outcome that is attractive. But to me, every single thing of design just lights me up and motivates me. This portfolio included the works through 2018 - 2019, two great years filled with collaborations and hardworking. Learning new techniques, I have high hopes that I have reached my expectation.

ke it. Enjoy! Hope you will li

shooting photos are fun, but carrying camera is disturbing. It is always a nightmare for a photographer to carry the camera with the neck strap on long-period strolling or traveling which makes your neck and shoulder ache. But you never know when you will encounter the fascinating moment, most photo shooters choose to keep on carrying, even though that the disturbing pain still remains.

MojiMoji The wooden rice spoon

Personal Project Material / Birch Wood Planks, Silicon Rubber Duration / 2 Months

24 | 25

MojiMoji, its name was inspired by the rice spoon in Japanese, "Shamoji ( し ゃ も じ )". The reason for choosing rice spoon as the topic is because "Rice" stands an important role in the Asian dining table. To consider the relationship between human and common tableware seems interesting and necessary.

26 | 27

rice spoon is the essential kitchen ware in Asia. Rice is the staple food of about 50% of the world's population, nearly 90% of which is produced in Asia and is consumed in developing countries such as Asia. It stands an important role in our food culture, almost every meals we

Moji Moj i

eat every single day includes rice. There is a unique and strong bond between our people and rice. Due to the commonness of rice dishes, there are unless one rice spoon in every each family.

A kitchen ware

fits every family members Most of the tableware or kitchen kits are designed only for adults, children's hand might not be big enough to control them well. Instead of making the uncomfortable continue, why not just build a tool for both adults and children? So why? Why do we need an age friendly (hand-size friendly) tool? To my believe, tools are made for human being to use, and that is the answer, "for human being".

Average Grip Radius Adult - 30.7 mm Childern - 10.2 mm ↑

The hand size varied by every individual in every age, the size of the handle of nowaday rice spoon must be redesign. To increase the tool operating experience the haptic sense will be a vital design element for hand-held ware like rice spoon. While doing the human hand fact research, there are couple of main focus I put in the first place as the design element. Beside different hand sizes, how human can grab things, or be more precisely, the tools more naturally and "handy" was listed out in my process.

The sudden idea knocked in, doing the biomimetic design about swallows gives this project a huge push. As the elegant creature, swallow's tail is an essential part that keeps themselves in balance from adjusting the width of the feathers area. This fact gives me an idea of mimicking the shape of swallows tail while the expanding process, not saying that the handle will be adjustable, but design the fixed shape included the whole process. To present the movement by an unchanging shape is quite a tough quest, and besides, I will like the image of swallow conserved, so there was a huge amount of sketching to reach the designing goal.

Toasters are simple but elegant kitchen appliances, there are a lot of great toaster design outside. But, I would like to dive into the design enhancing the experience and the feeling while operating the daily machine.

Inspiration

“Takumibito ( 匠人 )” is the japanese of craftsman. Japan has always highly praised in the culture of Takumibito, it has become the main spirit of the whole japanese society. The intrinsic elements of Takumibito are “dedication“ and “serious“ which makes these craftsman be respected by people. Japanese craftsmanship is a way of life for artisans who continue faithfully making their traditional crafts while devoting themselves to enhancing their skills.

“Using both of our hands enhance the focuses of user

We can all see or imagine that while craftsman doing their job, they all use their both hands. The main reason (well, everyone would know by guessing), is that the task they do requires wide working movement, and the high technique base needs more delicate process, so two-handed working mode is necessary, The two-handed posture design is not just mimicking the motion that craftsman usually do, but also based on human fact research which says that while human operating with both hand, they concentrate merely on the task in their hand. So, I would say that the unique feature is a great demonstration on both substantial side and psychological side.

Bi Toas t er

Operation After the research and defining the spirit of japanese craftsman, the final outform stays in the tranquil shape, and the visual balance of handles on both side, display my recognize to the sense of craftmans. Also the special operation feature of BiToaster, enhance the entire fine experience and the relation and interaction between machines and humans. The heating signal light adds the topping onto this design, I believe the visual feedback gains more positive reaction to human being and makes the toaster a more completed piece.

INTERNSHIP

KOSO is a ODM / OBM company focus on the high technical required product of motorcycle accessories, whose headquarters is located in Taiwan, Tainan. They have two main domain, one is the electrical focus, the other is the power and cylinder focus. And their products have been sold worldwide in the motorcycle field. The department of KOSO where I have my summer internship is in the design department in the electronic branch. The design method and process are different from the typical company, but I do affirmative the strategy that KOSO implement. There always be the ID (Industrial Design) and the R&D (Research and Develop) in product developing. Normal procedure will be like, ID finish the sketch and the design, then hand in to the R&D. The R&D will try to make the design to be manufacturable, but due to the complicate restriction in mold, in manufacturing process, in the assembly section, etc. Most of the time the R&D will inform the ID to adjust their design. Through these back-and forth correction, the duration of one product developing will be definite long. So, in KOSO, employees in ID deparment will need to the basic R&D knowledge to ensure the R&D department will only need to worry about the more complicate part of developing problem. As the result the discussion will be quite peaceful and short.

One that embraces the veteran rider for the most part. Harley 883 isn’t an ideal beginner motorcycle, but it would work in a pinch if you are dead set on having a Harley. It would be great for touring longer distances.

As a designer, our job is to visualize an idea, a form. So, we sketch, we mockup, we modelling, we render, we adjust and attempt, we make a concept comes out to meet the public. Before that are tons of work await to complete a design. Now we complete the prototype with a nice idea in it. We have many people eyes on the design, they are attracted by its form, its idea, or maybe it’s function, and they do desire of it.

What’s next? What should we do? I believe that this is a common question for many design students, we know a lot of skill and technique to fine our design projects, but when it comes to the afterward process of a product developing procedure, we have no idea of those. What are the restrictions on manufacturing? What is the manufacturing process of several materials? It’s true that we cannot be the expert of manufacturing, but it is necessary that we, the industrial designers, need to know the knowledge of those to avoid creating the fantasy product which cannot be manufactured. We can even expand our design pool when we know several manufacturing processes and be more confident to develop the unique design based on reality.

70 | 71

This is a project with a group of four design students from National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan and Kyushu University, Japan. In this project, we concentrate on the shifting population structure problem and trying to deliver an ideal community concept that enhances the society bonding, which we believe is the essential element of ideal residential place for human beings.

What can we Deisgn for Convivial Society?

Intro-video link

In nowadays society, due to the up-climbing population of the elderly, we have a more complicate population construction. For the better and livable community, the idea about convivial society has been conducted for a while. In Japan and Taiwan, there are more and more facilities that allow the elderly to live healthily physically and mentally. After the interviewing Japanese elders (8 people who live in Itoshima) and Taiwanese elders (6 people who live in Taipei). We discover facts that one common problem is the generation gap between the elders and youngers. Many factors are causing the gap, but the main problem is the fail circulation of conversation lacking, which makes the gap bigger and wider. Our team wants to create a field that the elderly won't be left behind of social participation and have chances to have a normal and comfortable conversation with anyone of all ages.

The proportion of Itoshima City has been changing continuously. People will need a new way to keep society from being a disorder.

72 | 73

8 elder interviewees participated in the first survey

“I like to be with my grandchildren, the time I spend with them is great. But sometimes, I can’t fit in their conversation“

Mr. SHIMOMURA age. 65

“I prefer meeting elders more than meeting youngs, the same generation get well together. My lifestyle is different form those youngs.“

Mr. SUEZAKI age. 79

Convivial Community Design

Base on the interview and further research in both Taiwanese and Japanese communities, we have proved our assumption about the causing fact to generation gap is correct. Moreover, we got more unexpected information that different elder individual view of point.

74 | 75

Convivial Community Design

Conversation? We need Common Topic First! As a common topic, we don’t want the various generations to feel awkward in the unfamiliar subject and keep the selection fresh and interesting. Music is our choice. The best element without language-barrier and easy to comprehend. You might think, there are many kinds of genres, many types of music... Yes. We do agree with your concern. The music we are talking about here is more like a mild and simple melody, which the sense of acceptance is more reasonable. Making the design be more general to the public.

Let’s talk about the Field. As a society design, the design field needs to be easily accessible for all residents. Japan and Taiwan both have an efficient bus system, and average passengers per run can be up to 26 people (in Taipei). There is also an existing “space” that the bus stop creates, which is for people to wait for the bus to come.

Elders

Adults

Kids

76 | 77

We can see the pictures on the left. There are elders, adults, and kids. Establishing a small society, which lies the potential engagement within. We want to evoke the conversation-starting point, create the opportunity of connection between individuals. Once the connection links in the daily life occasion, it will be much easier to gain more afterward relationships.

Convivial Community Design

Here is how the design works! Simple Breakdown of the “Music Jam Similar concept to a music jam. The music starts in a simple tempo when the first person sits in the stop, as the designed seat sensors sense more and more people add in the stop, the tempo becomes more complicate.

Bus Stop Design Base on the Japan common bus stop, but slightly redesigned more suitable for our interaction feature. Considering the engagement in the situation, we want to make sure we don’t want the passenger forget the initial intention, waiting for the bus. The overall facing designed toward the incoming direction.

Seat Design After the accessibility research, we create a “freelance field to make it more flexible. Mimic the casual musician standing position in a band

Electrical-power assist cycles have shown growth in a short amount of time. In the past 2 years at Giant, they have seen a big change in quantity and revenue in favor of e-bikes. Due to the facts, we have been requested to make the temptation to address what will e-bikes become in 3-5 years future. As a Taiwanese designer, having the chance to design for Giant, the world-known hometown cycle industry, make me excited as never before. It is also a great experience to design with other students worldwide. The design process and the result work pretty well at the end. It is exciting to show the main concept of our design to you.

URBANIZATION

Long-run trends in urban area Urbanization is not merely a modern phenomenon, but a rapid and historic transformation of human social roots on a global scale, as we would expect from trends in urban populations , urban land area was absent or insignificant for most of human history. More than half of the world’s population now live in urban areas — increasingly in highly-dense cities. The urbanization speed is going faster and faster. 86 | 87

so, why E-Bike ?

We believe that the city environment creates an appropriate field for people to commute with e-bike since the maneuverability and the electric-aid power reduce the tiredness. E-bikes also strongly augment the ability of human to expand their own lifestyle map.

Giant E-Bik e De sig n

While in the city, the distance between spot to spot is not far, but there will not be direct public transportation or the traffic will be heavy while drive cars, to discover the suitable way for urban transportation, we take some research on one of a world big city, Shanghai City. To demonstrate the daily route of a citizen in Shanghai, we ask one of our member from China whose hometown is in Shanghai. The spotted location on the map above is where her dad visits quite often in weekdays. Although the estimation of time is not precise, we still can find out that if we consider the traffic condition, the possible route for the vehicle, and the average distance of every route. We can find out that in spite of cars or trains or buses have the faster speed, due to the maneuverability of the bike and the smaller size in comparison, the total taken time of bike have approximate to vehicles, but with the electricity aids, bikes take into another level. We will like to bring e-bike into everyone's daily life as our goal of the future e-bike design. Besides the ecofriendly energy that the bike consume, there are more benefit and exclusive experience while riding a bike.

Adapting vary road condition and the appropriate speed perform of the bike, we want the comfort and the suspension from mountain bike, the light wieght and the speed from the gravel bike.

About Adaptation To create lifestyle e-bike, we want the bike to be suitable in all area. Road condition adaptation is the first target of our design. Beside bike’s equipped gear that changes the paddling effort, the riding position matters too. Different position relates to speed and comfort. We can change the position by adjusting the height of the saddle, but this changes the proper distance of human’s hip to the paddle which also influences the correct riding position. And while riding, we cannot adjust the saddle height simultaneously. So, we have an idea to reach our goal. We shift our awareness to the handle.

From riding position, saddle selection, to the type of chain, we do research and analysis and use the resource from Giant to reach our goal step by step. We do more tests on the different riding position with different saddle, while using the belt instead of common chain, which perform better on the e-bike. And with the result of our experiment, we have a nice development.

NO more poverty in 2030 Design for society

Against the Poverty End poverty in all its form everywhere by 2030

836 million people live in extreme poverty. It is more than the lack of income and resources to ensure a sustainable livelihood. Its manifestations include hunger and malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, social discrimination and exclusion as well as the lack of participation in decision-making. Governments and non-governmental organizations try to reduce poverty. Providing basic needs to people who are unable to earn a sufficient income can be hampered by constraints on government’s ability to deliver services, such as corruption, tax avoidance, debt and loan conditionalities and by the brain drain of health care and educational professionals. Strategies of increasing income to make basic needs more affordable typically include welfare, economic freedoms and providing financial services.

Absolute poverty was defined as a condition characterised by severe deprivation of basic human needs, including food, safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, health, shelter, education and information. Overall poverty including lack of income and productive resources to ensure sustainable livelihoods; hunger and malnutrition; ill health; limited and other basic services; increased morbidity and mortality from illness; homelessness and inadequate housing; unsafe environments and social discrimination and exclusion.

As designers, we reconsider our role in society. What can we do by exerting our profession to devote ourselves to helping with grand society problems? What can we do to help this long-term fight comes to the end? And also, How to sustain the poverty-less world and make it better?

Extreme Poverty Rate have been cut by MORE THAN HALF by 1990

According to the International Poverty Line, people are considered to be in ‘extreme poverty’ if they live on less than $1.90 per day, or the equivalent amount after converting currencies and adjusting for price differences between countries. This is the definition used by the World Bank and many other international institutions. Clearly, $1.90 is a very low threshold, so extreme poverty is, well, extreme. It is very important that fewer people live in such extreme misery, and thankfully that has happened. Today, about 10% of the world population lives in extreme poverty, while in 1990 the corresponding figure was about 37%. Two centuries ago almost everyone in the world lived in extreme poverty.

To end poverty in all its forms everywhere through education

A large population of the poor and the increasing gap between the poor and the rich mostly are attributed to lacking educational resources. Without education, social classes remain in a backward area. Meanwhile, limited resources in these areas can hardly be distributed to every child, as such, difficult to achieve a fine quality of education. Moreover, because the benefit of learning does not emerge immediately, many people there don’t take education seriously. Therefore, we want to create a stable and shareable learning medium with no requirement of supplementary energy conversion, guiding children to study indoor, emphasizing the importance of learning and the sense of ritual. Finally, as an untypical learning medium, Lumy is able to enhance the motivation to absorb knowledge.

Education is the long-term remedy to fight poverty

The importance of education in developing countries cannot be overstated. Education can be the catalyst needed to pull families and communities out of the cycle of poverty. Knowledge gives children the power to dream of a better future and the confidence needed to pursue a full education, which in turn will help generations to come. The 2015 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have committed to achieving inclusive and quality education for all to promote lifelong learning by 2030. This goal will be achieved by ensuring free and equitable access to quality early childhood education, and primary and secondary schooling for all.

102 | 103

The Concept of Lumy Gaining the diversity of knowledge in limited resource Achieving a good educational environment is a true challenge. How to reach a similar studying quality we have on a poor site is our ultimate goal. While understanding and improving the poverty education environment, we must also consider the students’ learning experience. Take not only Lumy itself but also the participants in the education sector into account. To accomplish the diversification under the limited resources, it is necessary to use every resource properly and maximize the benefits of materials.

Educational Sense

Outdated and worn-out textbooks are often shared by six or more students in many parts of the world. In Tanzania, for example, only 3.5% of all sixth grade pupils had sole use of a reading textbook. Workbooks, exercise sheets, readers, and other core materials to help students learn their lessons are in short supply. Teachers also need materials to help prepare their lessons, share with their students, and guide their lessons.

the Slider Donation Project Most of the current small donations and online donation processes tend to be purely funded. We give products a more substantial meaning to promote the effectiveness of fundraising and donations. Through the configuration of the slide and the process itself, giving feedback to the donor, the "transparent film" is turned into a "gift card". This can make the donation itself more enjoyable and fulfilling.
