The site was originally a parking lot beside the Tamsui old street, connecting people with the Tamsui River. So I choose multiple function restaurant to become my program that providing a rest space next to the park. The first floor is the gallery connecting the line of sight and the circulation, up the small staircase along the church space, the second floor is the dining room, while serving dunch, and the third floor can offer artwork display and sketching, connecting the Tamsui Art Gallery on the opposite.
Thickness & Mutiple-layers
Light or Heavy in Concrete
Many things in our lives have the same essence, but looking through different angles, they present different feelings . Like the water have change of state, twins have different personalities and one coin has two sides.
Look the original picture, it divide into two part, the material above is stone, but it looks as light as a balloon, and it takes a rope to tie up so that it doesn't drift away with the wind, and the material on the lower part is also stone, but like the stone you see in general, it has a heavy character. As the same material as stone, but the picture presents a completely different character, in strong contrast. It inspire me that the same essense thing can become two different way of character.
At first, it was difficult for me to choose that what kind of things have different qualities that can present different character, because materials, densities, weights, structures, etc. have such qualities.Until I observe that most of the buildings outside the window are in an unnatural state, the shell of concrete is too straight because of the artificial manufacture. But perhaps the building can exist in a more natural way.
Can concrete become as organic as a plant, as light as clouds? So I choose the material of concrete to study all the factors that can affect the presentation of different characteristics of concrete. The opening of the facade will face the different landmarks in the surrounding environment, the space has biggest opening faces to the ocean, the small one is faces to the old tree, and one of the openings can see through the path to the mountain.
Notation Of HETEROGENEITY Same essence , Different look
In this project, I tried to find factors that change the properties of matter.First, I study the weight, maybe it look like a stone, but it's hollow inside, when you enter this space from the outside, you can feel the shift in weight.
Then I focus on the thickness. I put walls or floors of different thicknesses together, and I opened holes of different sizes on them, and I found that some thick walls formed space in the interior because of the openings, thin walls formed space with the outside. Put these walls together, it could create surprises so you don't know if you are outside the walls or inside the walls. These openings of different thicknesses also affect the feeling of light, for example - open large holes on the thin walls, the light will be very direct, but on the thick walls, light will refract and scatter inside, and finally the light come out with very soft gloomy beam.
The size of opening hole and density can also affect the feeling of space and light, I want to present concrete in a different way, it can be a structure or a space, it can be artificial or it can be organic, it can be a pavilion or a building.
I think it is a kind of criticism of extremely artificial things.
