s summer comes to an end, so does the 2020-2021 rodeo season, marked by the end of National Finals in July. After a hard-fought battle, Texas took home another win, for a total of a record breaking 6 championship titles in a row. Helping with this record was Region VIII’s own Lane Picklo, an upcoming sophomore who went into Nationals as the Texas Champion Trap Shooter, and went home fourth in the nation in his event.
and welcome in newcomers from across the state. Thanks to region president Tom Aasbo, last year saw many new additions to our region, including a jumbo screen to view runs and advertise sponsors, and a timer which displays contestants times for the audience. The ability to livestream Region VIII rodeos from anywhere on your mobile device was also added last year, and will continue to be in use this season. The region also has free sponsored clinics, last year we had Reined Cow Horse and Goat Tying clinics, that are available to the rodeo contestants at select rodeos. And as a finally way to end our rodeo season in 2021, Granger Smith came and put on a concert for the contestants and their families, free of charge. I am excited to see what free, fun events our region offers us contestants this year. One of the many things that separates Region VIII from other regions is our contestant led church service. At 8:00 AM, before our Sunday rodeos, students and their families gather around to hear what their peers have to say about the Word of God. Both junior high and high school students participate, starting with a high school boy and a junior high girl who each prepare a service to share with everyone. Before the next rodeo, the high school boy must ask a high school girl to do the next service, and the junior high girl must ask a junior high boy. So it continues back and forth at each rodeo. At our banquet at the end of the year, Chico Hines, who helped get the church service where it is today, picks one person to deliver the service at our awards banquet in front of the entire region. Good job this year THSRA contestants, and good luck in the upcoming season. “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men,” Colossians 3:23.
LANE PICKLO
“Qualifying for Nationals was a goal I set for myself this year,” Lane said, when asked how he felt about being a National Qualifier. “It was exciting to become state champion and an honor to represent Texas at Nationals.” After asking if he’d gone to any other shoots between State and Nationals, he said, “Trap competitions are not really available where I live. Actually, Nationals was only the fifth time I’d ever competed in trap. So, I just kept up the good practice schedule prior to Nationals to stay sharp.” As for the rest of Region VIII, we hope to continue to make great changes to our region,
