Region I 2015-2016 THSRA Rodeo Schedule 3/5 & 3/6/2016 | Vernon 3/12 & 3/13/2016 | Hereford 3/26/2016 | Dumas

The Night Before Christmas Texas Style courtesy of Oasis Advanced Wellness

‘Twas the night before Christmas, in Texas, you know. Way out on the prairie, without any snow. Asleep in their cabin, were Buddy and Sue, A dreamin’ of Christmas, like me and you. Not stockings, but boots, at the foot of their bed, For this was Texas, what more need to be said. When all of the sudden, from out of the still night, There came such a ruckus, it gave me a fright. And I saw ‘cross the prairie, like a shot from a gun, A loaded up buckboard, come out at a run. The driver was “Geein” and “Hawin,” with a will, The horses (not reindeer) he drove with such skill. “Come on there Buck, Poncho & Prince, to the right, There’ll be plenty of travelin’ for you all tonight.” The driver in Levi’s and a shirt that was red, Had a ten-gallon Stetson on top of his head. As he stepped from the buckboard, he was really a sight, With his beard and moustache, so curly and white. As he burst in the cabin, the children awoke, And were so astonished, that neither one spoke. And he lifted up their boots with such presents galore, That neither could think of a single thing more. When Buddy recovered the use of his jaws, He asked in a whisper, “Are you really Santa Claus?” “Am I the real Santa? Well, what do you think?” And he smiled as he gave a mysterious wink. Then he leaped in his buckboard, and called back his drawl, “To all the children in Texas, Merry Christmas, Y’all!”

PERFORMANCE REPORT

By BLISS BOLTON – ARIAT Performance Reporter

T

he holiday season is upon us and holiday cheer is all around. Cowboys and girls are no strangers to this season of family, thankfulness, and gifts. Sometimes, however, the traditions and likes of people in the western culture can be a little different. Region II let us in on some of their favorite gifts to receive, and their

favorite holiday traditions. When giving a gift to a rodeo athlete, of course you can never go wrong with horse tack, a new bull rope or helmet, or maybe even a bronc saddle, but some rodeo contestants like would prefer some non rodeo related gifts. A group of junior high and high school Region II girls were asked what their favorite non rodeo related gifts were, some of their top answers were: jewelry, perfume, clothes, and makeup! These gifts are great for cowgirls but what about the cowboys you're buying for? Well Region II boys were also asked about their favorite gifts and things of that nature. Some top responses were: shirts, hats, pants, shoes, cologne, knives, and guns. Now if you're looking for a gift more suited to the western lifestyles of the rodeo competitors you're buying for some great gifts are: ropes, tack of any kind, saddles, boots, western shirts, NFR tickets, or even a great hat. What ever your are gifting your favorite cowboys and cowgirls with, they are sure to love it! Rodeo cowboys and cowgirls all have their favorite traditions as well. The Kennedy’s of Region II like to find a family they can cook and get gifts for. Some other Region II natives favorite traditions included spending time with family, going hunting, opening a gift on christmas eve, and handing out free water and snacks at the local mall for the holidays. Our awesome region secretary, Jody McElroy, said that her favorite traditions would have to be her whole family getting together and getting to go christmas shopping with her mom. Some Region II kids said their favorite part of the holidays was the food! Whether it be ham, turkey, pretzel salad, or stuffing it’s usually all delicious and nice to have a meal with the ones you love. The holidays bring lots of great traditions and great memories to be made. Over all the holidays bring great opportunity for gift giving, cherished family time, and meaningful tradition. Rodeo cowboys and cowgirls are no strangers to the things this season brings. Rodeo cowboys and cowgirls can be tricky to shop for but they love the family 2015-2016 THSRA Rodeo Schedule time, traditions and gifts of all sorts, and the great 3/5 & 3/6/2016 | Sweetwater food that the holiday season brings. So with that, 3/12 & 3/13/2016 | Midland happy holidays and good FINALS luck Region II in all that 3/25 & 3/26/2016 | Sweetwater you do!

y name is Chloe Costello and I am an 18 year-old senior from Kaufman, Texas. My parents are Dr. David and Mindy Costello. I was crowned Miss THSRA and then competed against 44 other states and provinces at the NHSFR to win the National High School Rodeo Queen title. It was truly a blessing to be surrounded by the support of Team Texas as well as my family and friends. When not “queening I compete in barrel racing, pole bending, cutting, and reined cow horse. I enjoy outside

activities such as varsity cheerleading, archery, and working my cutting horses. Future plans include attending Texas A&M University to major in Biomedical Sciences in hopes of becoming a Pediatric Orthodontist and possibly receive a minor in business. As I begin my fourth and final year of high school rodeo I can't count all the blessings and opportunities I've been given through this amazing organization. I hope that I can be involved in rodeo as long as possible and one day give back to THSRA as much support as they have given to me.

PERFORMANCE REPORT

Getting to know the stock contractor

By SAWYER PRZILAS

B

– ARIAT Performance Reporter

ack in nineteen eighty-five a young man graduated from college with a teaching degree, decided that he would rather work for his father for a whopping two hundred and fifty dollars a week. Deciding that something had to give, Mr. Kueckelhan received a loan from the bank. Using that loan, he bought his first set of steers, which he leased to his neighbors. After that it was a snowball effect of continually new clients and building his herd. If you’ve ever followed a stock contractor for a day you would realize one of two things; they work extremely long and ever changing hours as well as many versified locations. You would also come to know that they are making or answering more calls than any telemarketer. This particular contractor, by the name of Marty Kueckelhan, does just that. This well-known man, has been the stock contractor for region three for around eight years. The majority of his time that he isn’t on the phone is spent in one of four ways, buying or selling livestock, gathering or sorting the stock, doctoring and feeding as well as loading and logistics. Some of you might not have ever thought about how much work and time goes in to providing you quality stock

for your runs. The average time can be tracked anywhere between twelve to fifteen hour work days. Not all of this, however, goes into just the routine of feeding, sorting, buying or doctoring. Much of this time goes into the preparation of animals as well as equipment. It takes many trucks and trailers to get your stock to five separate rodeos on one weekend. Not to mention the employees who are in charge of driving and handling the onslaught of stock being moved various directions almost on a constant basis. However the most complicated job of the contractor is keeping the right amount of stock on hand. Normally, Mr. Kuekelhan needs around a couple hundred head of calves and steers and a few dozen or so ruff stock. As one could imagine this is nothing short of a miracle considering all of the outlying variables to this delicate equation. All of the Jr. High and High School calves for tie down as well as ribbons must be fresh, meaning never tied down at a rodeo before, which makes them arduous to acquire as they are not always readily available. To top that off the calves that aren’t required to be fresh have a window of around six weeks before they are too large and too fast to rope. The same dilemma exists with the roping steers, they must be kept under certain sizes, speeds and cannot be worn out. When asked why he does stock contracting, especially for Jr. Rodeos, he replied, “I have stayed with Jr. Rodeo, because it has been so good to my family. It has always kept bread on my table and I love watching the future of rodeo grow before my eyes.” Mr. Kueckelhan is here for the kids and to watch the sport prosper, he believes, “You have to love what you are doing first and foremost, even if you lose a little money along the way because if you always do what is best for the kids, it may not draw a profit every single time. However, it all pays out in the end.” When asked what his favorite part of the rodeo was Mr. Kueckelhan simply said, “I love watching the kids and the bond between parent and child as well as the camaraderie shared between the kids.” Proverbs 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

PERFORMANCE REPORT

Keep Moving Forwards By MCKENZIE RAY– ARIAT Performance Reporter

W

hat a great first semester that we've had in Region IV! It feels as though these last few months have flown by, so as we head into our winter break, now is the time to look back and reflect on what we've accomplished so far this year. Those accomplishments can come in many forms. No matter where you are in the standings or what event you've competed in, you've probably had many accomplishments-both small and largeso far this year. Think on them, and strive to focus on the positive things that you've done this year. Whether it was making a clean run, catching a calf or steer, or even making a new friend, these are all things that should be counted as a personal win. The key to a great mental game is being able to let go of judgements, and letting go of the runs that weren't as good as we would've liked is a big step in that. In other words, don't trip over something that's behind you. All of the runs that you've made to this point, good and bad, are behind you now, and to think on them often is to live in the past. Trevor

Brazile has said before, that "The best thing that you can have in rodeo is a short memory." There's a reason why world champions live by those lines of thought. Ask yourself this question. In 10 years, do you think that you'll still remember every detail of the bad run that stands out in your mind now? Do you think that you'll still be upset about it? The answer to that question in most cases is no. So here's another question; If you won't remember it in 10 years, why dwell on it now? Changing your attitude for the better is a goal that you can strive for every single day. It isn't something that happens overnight. But striving for a better attitude and achieving it will make you happier, more resilient, and it increases your chances of success in whatever that you endeavor to do.The main thing to remember, is that you can always choose a positive attitude. You are the deciding factor in your day, and you can choose if it's going to be a good one or a bad one. And following that logic, there's no reason why each day can't be the best that you've ever had. So make this one your best. Have a blessed and merry Christmas, and a happy New Year!

PERFORMANCE REPORT

By HANNAH HEMPHILL – ARIAT Performance Reporter

A

s I sit down to write this article, Region V members are gearing up for rodeos numbers 4 and 5, and I wanted to take time to congratulate our current all-around leaders, Haley Horn and Skyler Wools. With colder weather ahead and my favorite holiday approaching, that involves my favorite man a.k.a SANTA CLAUS, I began thinking about Christmas past. Santa all though my favorite now, was not always my friend. For the first three years of my life I feared this jolly old guy to the point of screams at the local mall that would make people stop to

see who was killing me! Needless to say at the very smart, all knowing age of four I realized this red clad person brought all those presents and toys, and a fourteen year love affair soon began. I remember the anticipation on the night before christmas, not being able to sleep because I was so ready to see what Santa brought me. I remember leaving cookies, milk and carrots for Santa and his reindeer, all in hopes that he would leave me tons of presents. I loved opening all the presents I received, and seeing everyone so happy. These memories remind me that many times in life or in our rodeo careers we face obstacles or fear, but our God will never give us more than we can handle. We should trust in the Lord and embrace the challenges in our lives as opportunities. I absolutely LOVE Christmas and all the holiday traditions; the presents, the food, time spent with family, but most important of all I love the reason for the season.. The birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Many times we get caught up in the commercial aspect of the holiday, instead of the true meaning. Take time to thank God for all of your blessings and thank him for his presence in your life. So until next time let go and let GOD!!!!

Farm & Ranch Family The folks at McCoy’s Building Supply understand that it takes a lot of hard work and the whole family pitching in to get things done on a farm or ranch. That’s why we’d like to take some time out to salute Texas High School Rodeo Association families who are farmers and ranchers. In our monthly Farm & Ranch Family Spotlight, we’ll feature one family, sharing their story of how they work together as a family to make their farm or ranch successful. The spotlight will run for 10 months; each month will feature a different Region. Each Regional McCoy’s Farm and Ranch Family will receive a $100 McCoy’s Gift Card. The McCoy’s Farm and Ranch Family of the Year will receive a $500 McCoy’s Gift Card and will be announced at the 2016 THSRA State Finals.

ongratulations to the Peeler’s, McCoy’s Farm and Ranch Family of the month! Jason and Marianna; their four kids Ben, Graves, Annabeth and Luke; and Jason’s parents, Alonzo and Barbara, manage and operate the Peeler Ranch located in Floresville, Texas. The Peeler Ranch has been a family affair since 1878 and has gradually been passed down through the generations into the hands of Jason and his father, Alonzo. The two men manage and oversee the cow/ calf operation, the feed yard and all aspects of ranching that accompany the two. “We’re in the cattle business. We ranch cows, manage the feed yard, and grow for packing grain. We cover several aspects of the cow/calf operation.”. Jason explained how their feed yard, Texana Feeders is the

primary business of the ranch. He and his dad have owned and overseen this operation since April of 2002. While the operation has grown over time, today, they hold approximately 15,000 head of cattle daily. Running a ranch is no easy task, but it’s “what we love to do,” Jason stated. “Everyone has their place and is responsible for certain tasks within the family business.” Annabeth, a Junior at Winston School of San Antonio and a THSRA Region VI member, has a few colts she is breaking while her brothers, Graves and Luke mainly focus on wildlife management and learning how to manage resources within the land. They also help fix equipment and mend fences when needed. Ben Peeler, the oldest son and former THSRA member, is currently pursuing an agribusiness degree at West

Texas A&M University. In addition to the cow-calf operation, a small portion of their business includes a hunting lease. They lease out a couple of lots for quail and whitetail hunting in season. Graves and Luke are primarily in charge of the wildlife management. “We all love being outside and we all love riding horses,” Jason stated. When it comes time to gather, work, and process cattle the whole family comes together. Jason explained the appreciation they have for the land and the ranch in general. Through the ranch, the Peeler kids have gained a sense of responsibility and have had a good work ethic instilled in them from an early age, as well as a sense of teamwork, communication skills, working skills and character building skills along with a number of lessons they can benefit from now as well as later on in life. A McCoy’s store was recently built in Floresville, and the Peeler’s have been loyal customers ever since! The family shops for all of their fencing, plumbing, construction and tooling needs. They are thankful for McCoy’s sponsorship of the THSRA and are honored to be named the McCoy’s Farm and Ranch Family of the month!

istractions... We all have them. No matter what they may be and how they may affect you, it's important to decrease them as much as possible. Whether its social media, what happened at school yesterday, you're waiting on a girl that you gave your number to text you, a friend is mad at you, or even family; it's still easy to move your focus away from those things. For instance, why does it matter that the girl you've never met in person put heart eyes under your picture on Instagram? She's probably a catfish anyway. Or why is it so important that your friend is upset with you, it's a test of how strong your friendship is. So move your attentions to what's really important; God, Family, and Rodeo. All those Instagram comments, replays on Snapchat, and favorites on Twitter mean nothing when you're trying to become a better person. Now you may be wondering, "How could I possibly not be distracted by my issues?” That's probably the biggest test of

your character. It's crucial that you lay out your priorities, and do it truthfully! Once you've done that, focus on those things. Those are the things are the most important. There are so many petty things of this world that Satan puts out there just to mess with your head. But you're smarter than that. 1 Peter 1:13-14 reads, "Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep a clear head, and set your hope completely on the grace to be given to you when Jesus, the Messiah, is revealed. As obedient children, do not be shaped by the desires that used to influence you when you were ignorant." Translating that into today's terms; be ready for what comes your way and don't even trip, trust in Jesus and don't be pressured by what everyone else is doing. All everyone wants to do is make it big, and you're not going to do that with your head in the clouds. The people who have too many distractions are the ones who forget to do important things, will end up at the bottom of the standings or hurt. So is it really worth stressing over everything? Strive to be the greatest, because none of the world champions out there are distracted by all the noise in their ears. They're focused on what's real, what's true, and what's going to get them the success they want. If you don't pick up anything else from this article, remember this; commit to The Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.

Make This Christmas Extra Special!

W

article courtesy of realbuzz.com

e can’t show you how to make this Christmas a white one and we can’t make sure that lovely colleague of yours hovers under the mistletoe long enough for you to plant a kiss on their perfect lips, but we can show you how you can make some pretty small steps so that this Christmas is extra special. Enjoy the build up Sometimes the best thing about Christmas is the expectant build up. Don’t let all the little things that make Christmas extra special pass you by in a blur of frantic present wrapping. To make this your best Christmas ever sit back, put your weary over-shopped feet up and take a big sip of your favourite festive mocha – your state of mind and Christmas spirit will thank you for it. Christmas movie night Everyone has a favourite Christmas movie, so why not invite a few of your friends round or gather up the family and arrange a Christmas movie night? The rules are this: everyone should bring one Christmas movie they love and a Christmas treat. Then you just need to sit back and enjoy It’s A Wonderful Life, Love Actually or, for those more action-packed movie fans, Die Hard. Read a Christmas book To make this Christmas your best ever you should definitely peruse the Christmas section at your bookstore. Imagine settling back into a comfy chair with a cheeky pre-Christmas drink whilst reading about plucky Tiny Tim in A Christmas Carol or, for those of you who like a more humorous and modern read, Holidays On Ice by David Sedaris. If you often find yourself too frazzled around Christmas to pick up a book try a Christmas poetry anthology; The Oxford Book of Christmas Poems is a great choice. Shop online Okay, so the internet is nothing new but, despite the fact that you can buy pretty much everything online for less, people still traipse around overcrowded shops, only to get blasted by advertising and persuasive shop layouts that make us buy dud presents no one wants and have to queue for 25 minutes for the privilege of buying said gifts. Trust us, for the majority of the gifts you need to buy, you’re best to stick to online stores. You can shop around for the best price and look out for stores that offer a free delivery service.

Gingerbread house What says Christmas more than a gingerbread house? If you’re not a dab hand in the kitchen, don’t worry; reach for your plastic and buy a cheap DIY gingerbread house kit. To make your gingerbread house that bit more special create it with your family and make it personal to you and your lives. Easy Christmas biscuit tree stack This easy Christmas biscuit tree stack is simple, effective and will make you look like you’ve had Elf help this year. Simply make or buy a biscuit dough, cut out 10-14 stars (the stars need to go from large to small in size) and bake until cooked. Once cooled ice each biscuit with white icing. Once the icing is set stack the cookies; the largest star should sit at the bottom and the smallest star should sit at the top. Your holiday guests will love this stack. Christmas tradition The best way to make this your best Christmas ever is to start a new tradition. You could invite your family or friends to each buy a new Christmas decoration for your tree or you could go on a special Christmas eve walk and stop in at a cafe for a Christmas treat. Make your Christmas tradition something that you look forward to and make sure it’s meaningful to you. Get the best wrapped present’s award If you’re anything like us you’ll know that your dream of having elegant and perfectly neat Christmas presents to give to your loved ones is a dream that is never going to become a reality. Yet wait, we have good holiday news for you and your kin! Go to your local store and ask for their unwanted cardboard boxes. Then simply pop all of your awkward to wrap items into relevant boxes before wrapping. If you don’t have enough time for this devious wrapping trick just buy pretty boxes and add a bow or ribbon to decorate. Get involved The best way to make sure this is your best Christmas ever is to get involved in all the Christmas activities in your local community. Go ice skating, take part in a Santa run, go to your local nursing home to volunteer, visit the most decorated house in your area or go to a craft fair. Get involved with as much as you possibly can to make sure this Christmas is memorable and meaningful.

PERFORMANCE REPORT

I

– ARIAT Performance Reporter

t's hard to think it’s already December! So much has happened and so much is still to happen with so little time left in this year. It's crazy how fast life goes by and how much happens in this short amount of time. Most regions are about half way through the season and it just seems like we just all had our first high school rodeos this year. Many exciting things going on in so many regions. This year region VII is having a fiesta following our rodeo on December 5th. We will have a band auction items and a great fajita dinner. This is going to be very fun so everyone needs to make sure they come out and enjoy. With this new year coming up let’s not think about all the new things we are going to change with the new year, let's think how can I make this year better what can I do to make this year go out with a bang. This mind set change can be applied in so many ways in so many places. This mind set just doesn't apply in big ways either it can be in little decisions you make. It could be taking 10 more minutes to pin

the calves one more time just so you can score a few more calves, so at the next rodeo you and your horse will score like a champ. One little thing right there! This just doesn't have to be applied to rodeo either. I know many fellow High School Rodeo members also play sports through school. Just think how can I make one decision that will change just this practice for the better. This might kind of be a hard thing for some people to do or even think about. So one way to start off at changing what's left of this year is to think positive! So what you drew up “last on the drag again for like the tenth time in a row” or “your first on the fresh goat” just do the best you can with what you got! Think positive you don't win championships without being last on a drag and you can make that fresh goat good if you stay positive and do what you know how to do! As we all get ready for our holidays we can't forget to slow down and be especially thankful for everything and everyone around us! Especially in the rodeo arena rodeos don't run themselves it takes a lot of effort and time from a lot of very amazing people so make sure we tell them thank you every chance we get!

PERFORMANCE REPORT

Giving Thanks, giving back

By Melissa

Garcia – ARIAT Performance Reporter

W

ith the holidays quickly approaching I’m almost positive we are all starting to prepare for that wonderful break from school and start to focus on the feasts, parties, travel, and most importantly spending quality time with our families. Being thankful for the opportunities and blessings we have been given should be something we are all thinking about during this time. Some of us might have made that memorable trip to Las Vegas to watch the National Finals Rodeo or to support a loved one who is competing. As we give thanks and enjoy our time with family it’s easy to forget about the people that aren’t as fortunate as we are. Some may be overseas fighting for our freedom and others may have lost a loved one and some might not even have family where they live. The simple things in life we might take for granted like our comfy bed at home, a hot home cooked meal, and even clean clothes are sometimes the little things others might be dreaming of. Throughout the holiday season there are so many opportunities to give back or volunteer your time. Volunteering doesn’t always come easy. It means sacrificing time from your day to give to others in need. The thought of doing a selfless act and receiving no per-

sonal benefit is what fuels some. From food banks to homeless shelters there are always organizations, families, and people in need. Have you ever been so hungry that your stomach makes so much noise its almost embarrassing? Think about what a homeless person feels that’s hasn’t had good meal. Local food banks are always in need of food, especially during the holiday season. Doing something as simple as adding a few extra items to your shopping cart at the grocery store helps more than just one person. With changing weather, the struggle for the homeless to stay warm is another huge concern. If you have gently used jackets and sweaters you don’t wear or aren’t using anymore, donating them to a local shelter could help those in need. Giving is something that comes from the heart. It’s not something that takes a lot of thought. It’s those decisions that happen at the spur of the moment that are sometimes the most memorable. During the break and holiday festivities it’s important that we don’t forget our four legged family members. In some areas the weather is harsh and takes a toll on them. As important as it is sometimes we can get caught up in the moment and forget about the additional responsibilities and care they require during the colder temperatures. Just as you are trying to stay hydrated you should also check your animal’s water as well. Staying warm could mean using heat lamp or putting out old blankets or even blocking out the wind from whatever shelter your animals use. Animal shelters are also always in need of items. So while you’re out shopping or running errands pick up a few things your local animal shelter might need. Dog or cat food or even a monetary donation. Every bit helps. Texas High School Rodeo Association is well known for giving. Several regions take pride in community service projects and helping others during the rodeo season. In the last few years Region VIII has sent care packages to our soldiers, donated gifts to Toys for Tots and also donated food to the local food MORGAN ARNOLD, MONTANA COX, BILLY ENGELING & ABBY SLAGLE bank. At our November

It was a huge surprise to him to receive this check as November was his first rodeo back from the accident. The check was for $1,500 to help cover any out of pocket expenses he incurred because of the accident. Region VIII has various fundraisers throughout the season and we were more than happy to allocate these funds to help Mr. Engeling. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. ~ Winston Churchill

PERFORMANCE REPORT Region IX group message got the text that our Region IX student president, Peyton Oliver, and her mom, Shannon Oliver, who is on the executive board, got into a major wreck. They drive from New Mexico for every rodeo and when they were a little ways out of Comanche, their trailer and truck flipped. The trailer fishtailed off the road taking the bed of the freightliner they were driving with it. The truck and trailer were totaled but thanks to God’s amazing ways, there were no casualties. Peyton and Shannon went to the hospital and By EMALEE HOFFMANN– ARIAT Performance Reporter hat a great weekend it was to have came out with good results. In light of all the success, we had another accident during the rodeo. Justin Dibble was hurt while riding broncs. When he came off the horse, the horse came back around, knocked him to the ground, and stepped on his neck. This was a very scary moment for the region because we knew that this was a bad situation. The medics came out and our directors helped prepare him to lay on the back-board. We were all scared wondering if he was going to be paralyzed but were given hope when he opened his eyes and started moving his head. They loaded him on the board and backed the ambulance into the arena. He was loaded and then they headed off to the hospital. The whole accident took a total of about ten or fifteen minutes to be cleared. Justin was given good results at the hospital. He just had some strained ligaments in his neck and would be sore for a while. He came back on Sunday to cheer on the rest of his friends and show everyone that he was ok. God again showed us he works in miraculous ways. He must have laid his hand over Region IX that Saturday because he helped three people come PEYTON AND SHANNON OLIVER out of terrible accidents.

1/23 & 1/24/2016 | Bryan 2/6 & 2/7/2016 | Crockett 3/19/2016 | Huntsville After the rodeo was over on Saturday, all the contestants were treated to a jambalaya dinner, wonderfully prepared by Brian Cones. We also had the chance to learn from some of the pros. Region IX had pulled together some pro rodeo people to give clinics on some of our favorite events. There was a tiedown clinic with Profession Roper J.W. Kirkham, a barrel racing clinic with professional barrel racer Kelly Kaminski, a team roping clinic with Ricky Ferguson, and a bull riding clinic with professional and ex Region IX champ Dalton Votaw. These were some amazing and extremely informational clinics that helped us kids see our potential and show us some of the ways to perform the best. We were then treated to another surprise. We had a dance. This was probably the most fun part of the day. Our designated DJ, Tiny Dyson, played everything from Ace in the Hole by George Straight to the famous song, Hit the Quan. All the kids were dancing and having a ball, the parents were even getting down as well. The

amazing and glorious day ended and rodeo number five started that Sunday morning. We woke up to an amazing message from Garet Aldridge where he talked about finishing like you started. Just like in rodeo when you start out hard, whether your bronc riding or barrel racing, you have to finish with that same ethic. He talked about it being the same in your walk with the Lord. You can’t start out strong and then fade away, you have to be strong in your faith all the time because God is great and he will always finish as strong as he started. The kids really took his message because we saw a renewed energy in everyone when the rodeo started. In bareback we had two out of three boys make rides and finish like they started. Jared Strawster finished first with a score of 72 and Dylan Chandler came in second with a score of 68. In pole bending four girls ran 20’s and three boys got times in steer wrestling. Peyton and Shannon also came to the rodeo and were welcomed back with grateful arms. John Lindsey a freshman who competes in team roping and steer wrestling told us how great his weekend was. He said, “I didn’t do very well this weekend but I can’t wait until next time when I come and show everyone what I’m made of. I’m going to go home and practice harder.” When asked what his favorite part of the weekend was he answered, “The dance and getting to rodeo with my friends. The dance was awesome. I had a lot of fun and I think we should do it every rodeo. High school rodeo is my favorite part of the year.” Just like John, I’m sure everyone had a fabulous weekend at Bryan. We had some accidents but they ended well. We also got to experience good food, fun, and wonderful worship. This weekend showed all the Region IX contestants and parents what it means to be thankful, and what a better time with November being the month of giving. We were thankful for the safety of three horses and three important people to the Region IX family and we were thankful for all the opportunities we were given this weekend. As 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

Whataburger is proud to recognize a THSRA member from each of the ten Regions who truly upholds the title “Whatakid!” One of the nominees will be chosen at the State Final Rodeo in June as the Whatakid of the Year. In recognition of this accomplishment they will receive free Whataburgers for an entire year!

Congratulations to this month’s Whatakid, Bailey Jo Bennight! The Region VI President calls Smithville, Texas home and attends Smithville High School as a Junior. At school, Bailey is a varsity basketball and volleyball player, and in the rodeo arena she competes in the pole bending, breakaway roping and barrel racing, though she claims pole bending is her favorite event. This is Bailey’s third year of high school rodeo and she is very familiar with the work and dedication it takes in order to see success in and out of the rodeo arena. She starts her day at 6:05 each morning, goes to school from 7:55 to 3:20 everyday, and attends after school practice for either volleyball or basketball, depending on the season. “After practice, I go home and try to ride and practice my rodeo events as much as possible. I help my dad feed and doctor cattle, and I feed the horses and goats.” Bailey has a team of equine athletes, but her 21-year-

old palomino, Yella, holds a special place in her heart. She spoke about a time when her sister was riding Yella at the THSRA finals and he ended up bucking her off. She does not remember exactly how she acquired the horse, but she has been running him in the pole bending for the past nine years. Outside of the THSRA, Bailey is a member of FFA, she is an active member in her school’s student council and she enjoys playing volleyball and basketball. This year she hopes to be inducted into the National Honors Society. Though life can get hectic, Bailey strives to “stay optimistic.” Her involvement in the THSRA has made her a determined individual as well as one who does not take things for granted. “Getting to travel around and make new friends, while getting to do something we all love is the best of both worlds,” Bailey said. “I have met so many amazing people through the THSRA.” A couple of other “amazing” people Bailey mentioned were her parents. She explained how her parents have always been there for her and how they have always put Bailey and her siblings before themselves. “My parents have worked their whole lives in order to give us the best they can. I can’t thank them enough for the life they have given me and my siblings. Without them we wouldn’t be who we are today.” We know Bailey will continue to do great things and we wish her he best of luck in her

future endeavors! Once she graduates high school, Bailey plans to attend Texas A&M University. She said she would like to become a dental assistant and spend the rest of her years traveling. Good luck, Bailey and congratulations!

TEXAS JUNIOR HIGH RODEO ASSOCIATION NEWS

D

ear Junior High Contestants and Families: As I sit down to write this article for December I am feeling a little overwhelmed of where 2015 has gone. I don’t know about you, but I feel life is so fast lately. We look up and before you know it we are beginning a new year! I am always a little excited to see what the next

year will bring and reflect what the past year revolved. I had many changes to my life this year, still not really comfortable to say that I am living in Gonzales, because I love my home in Caldwell. I am looking forward to spending some time in Caldwell with my boys at Christmas. I really do miss them! The Texas Junior High Rodeo has had some changes this year as well, we have our own Marketing Director, Maci Meyer, I have started getting in some ideas from her for the finals and I think you are going to be impressed. We will be announcing the plans for the finals in the next couple of months. So remember to keep your practice up during the holidays so you can end on a great run at your region rodeos. Well as I always end my December articles, I know you are excited as I am for the first two weeks of December; it is like the rodeo Christmas! The NFR will be showing on many of your televisions and if you are lucky enough to go to Las Vegas have fun. We will be cheering on many Texas cowgirls and cowboys as they race to the end of year all trying to win that extra money they have on the table this year. As many of you know with the major changes in the rodeo world, this could be the epic year to watch and see how it unfolds. I hope you get everything you are wanting under the Christmas tree and that you get to spend some very valuable time with your family. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! TEXAS JUNIOR HIGH RODEO ASSOCIATION NEWS REGION VII: One Tough Region

i my name is Makenna Shook, I am the President of the TJRHA and also the President of Region 7. We have a tough Region this year and it will be a battle in the

all-around race as well as the event races all the way to the last rodeo. We have several National Qualifiers including: Connor Atkinson, Slade Wood and Madison Outhier. Nena Boettcher is our new secretary and is doing a great job of filling Mrs. Anne Dollery’s position. Mrs. Anne will be greatly missed by all of us. In my opinion Rodeo is one of the toughest sports due to the challenges that exist. Not only do you have to be on top of your game mentally and physically but you are counting on your horse to execute a run just like he has countless times through the week while you are preparing for the rodeo. Then you have the draw and now you have to make a run on an animal that might not be the best in the draw. The best part about rodeo is how you spend countless hours practicing and preparing to beat your competition which most of the time are some of your best friends. Once you make your run you are cheering your friends on and are just as happy for them if they beat you. You are the first one to give them a high five when they are coming out of the arena or them waiting on you to give you high five or a hug. Even though the different regions compete at State you are rooting for your best friends that they win their region so they have a good chance at making Nationals. I have several good friends at school but most of my long-time best friends are the ones I see at the rodeos on the weekends and we compete against each other every week. TJHRA rodeos are some of my best rodeo memories. That doesn’t mean that every State Finals has gone as I hoped to but made me a better competitor and sent me home to practice harder in getting for the next state finals. Good luck at the Region rodeos and can’t wait to see everyone in Gonzales at the Finals in May.

TEXAS JUNIOR HIGH RODEO ASSOCIATION NEWS REGION VIII: Competition is Heating Up!

egion 8 Junior High Rodeo has started off with a bang. Seeing everyone's can-do attitudes and bright and shining faces has been exhilarating. Realizing the fierce competition that comes with new rookies and returning contenders has been very exciting. Competition is heating up as we are entering our 6th and 7th rodeos. With very stiff competitors, no one is guaranteed a title. At our first rodeo of the year, we elected new officers for our 2015-2016 rodeo season. Eighth grader Emma Smith of Pleasanton, Texas is our president. Last year Emma earned the title of

TJHRA State Champion Barrel Racer and qualified for Nationals for her second time now. Rylee Dodson of Sabinal, Texas is our Vice-President. Rylee's favorite event is breakaway roping which she is leading right now. She has been attending Region 8 for two years now and is a returning 8th grader. Lastly, I, Kate McNeill am our region secretary. I am from Pleasanton and this is my final year in Junior High and I am extremely blessed to call Region 8 my home. Last year I earned the title of Rookie All Around Cowgirl and I am happy to pass down that title. Rylee, Emma and I are all a tight knit group of girls and are the perfect example of how close our rodeo family really is. Our region is blessed to have such hard working parents and volunteers that are always there to tighten your cinch or push up cattle. We, as competitors, are also so thankful for all of the people who help us put this together, like our sponsors. Our rodeo family always goes the extra mile to help out and make sure everything is going smoothly. All of us have been working really hard to earn a little extra money to help afford our year-end prizes. Thanks to the parents who brought in silent auction items, we have had very successful and beneficial auctions. In addition, we are selling numerous raffle tickets. We are always looking forward to seeing the outcome of this season and wish everyone the best of luck. Have a safe rodeo season and I will see you all at the State Finals.
