PERFORMANCE REPORT

By BLISS BOLTON – ARIAT Performance Reporter

S

ince it is off season and everyone is preparing for the spring rodeos, now is the time to look back and appreciate the people who make our whole year possible. the board behind our association is great. two real stars of this board are our president, clint Griffin, and our secretary, Jody Mcelroy. these two make it possible for our rodeos to run as smooth and as efficiently as they do. First is our President clint Griffin, he is the father of Jack Griffin, a freshmen in our region, who competed in three years of junior high rodeo. the Griffin family makes their home in eldorado, tx. When Griffin is not fulfilling his presidential duties for our region, he works as a self employed lawyer and is the county attorney for Schleicher county, tx. Some hobbies that Griffin enjoys includes roping, snow skiing, and hunting. Griffin got involved in rodeo in the 80’s when he was a contestant and competed in the steer wrestling, calf roping, and team roping. Griffin was asked what made him want to get involved and become president of Region ii and he responded, “We are lucky in region 2 that we have great group of parents, volunteers and contestants that help organize and run the rodeos. i just happen to be the president, the secretary, directors

and volunteers are the people that put on the rodeos. i just try to help in any way that i can to make things run smoothly.” Griffin said this was his favorite thing about High school rodeo, “My favorite thing about the HS rodeos are the great people that we get meet and work with. We get to watch the kids improve and grow as competitors and as people. in our region we are so large from a geographic standpoint that the rodeos are way for me to reconnect with old friends from all over West texas and the South Plains area. We all really enjoy putting on a good quality rodeo.” Griffins favorite rodeo memory is when his step daughter Kristen was the State champion Breakaway Roper, and also won the national title. When asked what the biggest challenge facing rodeo was, Griffin responded, “ Biggest challenges right now for HS rodeo i believe is finding enough good quality stock for our kids to compete on. We are lucky in our region to have people like John dunn who put together our bucking stock who want to get stock that matches our riders capabilities and lets them develop. We have neal Felton and Brent charlesworth who put together our roping stock in such a manner that no one can complain. the ability to find good venues that can handle all the needs that range from our rough stock contestant to our timed event contestants and our speed events is always challenging.” Mr. Griffin is a great president for our region and his best advice for members and parents is to jump in and lend a hand! next is our amazing secretary, Jody Mcelroy. Jody’s daughter was the Region ii Pole Bending champion for two years during href time in the tHSRa. Jody has a lot of extensive secretarial duties but somehow she manages to squeeze in being a USdait specialist. Some hobbies that she enjoys are barrel racing, stock shows, and running 5K’s. She has been involved in high school rodeo for eight years, she got involved when her daughter was competing and she became the pole bending director. Jody competed in rodeo growing up but she never competed in the tHSRa. Her favorite thing about high school rodeo is that it is a family sport. When asked what she thought the biggest challenge facing rodeo was, she answered, “i think we have been very fortunate as a whole for our region we continue to grow. i think financial situations sometimes make it hard for some to high school rodeo.” Her advice for any members or parents of t he tHSRa would be savor your four years in high school, they go by quickly. Jody is very loved and appreciated in our region and does an amazing job as secretary. Without our great secretary and president we 2015-2016 THSRA Rodeo Schedule would not be able to have the rodeos we do. not only 3/5 & 3/6/2016 | Sweetwater our president and secretary 3/12 & 3/13/2016 | Midland but our whole Regoin ii board! So with that being FINALS said good luck Region ii in 3/25 & 3/26/2016 | Sweetwater all that you do!

PERFORMANCE REPORT SOMETIMES FIRE MAKES EVERYTHING GROW BACK GREENER

By SAWYER PRZILAS

N

– ARIAT Performance Reporter

ovember 13th, 2015 was the worst nightmare for any business owner descended its chaos upon equibrand. the factory under equibrand, or more commonly known as classic, burned down entirely with only memories left to salvage. the factory was located in Granbury texas, housing eighty-two loyal workers. the factory’s main responsibility was the production of classic and rattler ropes, strings and goat strings. the factory also produced many different classic equine products, including saddle pads. “the plan for recovery started before the flames were out.” as Ken Bray, President of equibrand said in a recent interview. When questioned about the plans for reconstruction, Ken exhibited his prowess as a leader by having a plan instituted for situations as such. Hours after the fire, Ken and the team at equibrand began the search for emergency buildings to lease, to immediately begin reining in the resources. the most important of those resources were the machinery to both create the yarn or material that is to later be treated and spun into your rope. all of the machinery used to make ropes, was custom made by the company and cannot be purchased out in the market. although Mr. Bray is already actively working with fabrication shops, engineers and the locals to get the business reconfigured and again in the

normal routine. another process of the plan was to meet with architects, designers and engineers to begin construction on a new building. the new factory is scheduled to break ground soon after the plans arrive. the ingenuity as well as the kindheartedness of Mr. Bray was shown through both the quick recovery and reassurance on his part, and every worker is being paid during the recovery process. While most corporations would apologize for your bad luck, that great leadership comes in to play with his decisions, again showing both his commitment and respect he has for the loyal employees helping make classic live up to the name and standards it has set. “no person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave” – calvin coolidge along to being a great leader to his employees, equibrand is a national sponsor this year, when asked about how it felt to be a national sponsor Mr. Bray responded with, “We believe we have a responsibility to support the youth of rodeo and help grow the sport. High School rodeo helps build good kids and we want to be a part of that.” this statement lives up to the company motto, “to build the best products possible and offer the best customer service in the industry.” not only are leaps and bounds taken for the consumer but, “to give employees outstanding conditions and environments.” Should be added as well for the strides the company has taken for all sides both consumer and producer alike. as for the environment of the employees, the details so far on the new building sound as if the comeback will be larger but just as focused on the motto as ever. With over twelve thousand square feet of floor space, the new environment 2015-2016 THSRA Rodeo Schedule looks to hold a promising future. 2 corinthians 5:17 1/23 & 1/24/2016 | Stephenville “therefore, if anyone is in christ, 2/27 & 2/28/2016 | Stephenville he is a new creation. the old has passed away; behold, the new has FINALS come.” 3/18 - 3/20/2016 | Stephenville

NEW YEAR, NEW GOALS

By MCKENZIE RAY– ARIAT Performance Reporter

A

new year brings new beginnings. it's like starting over. everything is fresh come January 1st; like opening day in baseball. on that day, anything is possible. everyone's win/loss ratio is the same. it's a blank slate. though for us the new year marks the midway point in our season, the feeling a starting fresh is still strong. there's so much hope tied into a new year, and for many, there a new goals to be reached. Reaction iV is filled to the brim with incredible athletes, all of whom have hopes and aspirations of their own. every competitor is on the hunt for state this year, and from there, nationals. Some will achieve these feats, most will fall short. But all of them will be trying their absolute hardest to make this new year, their year. it's going to be hard; rodeo as a sport has its ups and downs. injuries, bad runs, and complications are all part of the deal. But there are wonderful things to be found, too, and it's our job to seek them in 2016. Here's what a few Region iV members are looking forward to in

the coming year: "i'm looking forward to adding another chapter to my life. i plan on spending 2016 with family and friends while chasing my goals down the rodeo trail." –tyler Harris "to win the steer wrestling in our region." –cal Wolfe "new beginnings." –Maci Ray "to qualify for state in all of my events!" –Hayley novak "i'm most looking forward to a new start." –Kaitlyn Burkham "i am definitely looking forward to finals. i pray for a great region finals and an even better state! it's my last year and i hope to make it the best and use the talent God has blessed me with to glorify Him." –Lainey cooper "i am looking forward to accomplishing my rodeo goals i have set for myself and being with my rodeo family." –Molly Wagner "i'm looking forward to entering no Loozr Here Sparky in more high school rodeos and UPRa rodeos and seeing what we are able to accomplish! also i am looking forward to team roping more in 2016!" –Raimi Beeler "in the 2016 rodeo season i'm looking forward to taking advantage of the lasts of my senior year. i'm excited for the opportunities 2016 will bring & making them the best yet!" –Shelby domingue "in 2016, i am looking forward to completing goals i have set for my 2016 rodeo season, and also starting college and all the opportunities that come with it." –carlie conaway

PERFORMANCE REPORT

By HANNAH HEMPHILL – ARIAT Performance Reporter

A

s 2015 came to an end so did my favorite event, the nFR. at this year’s nFR many cowboys and cowgirls dreams were dashed as many of the titles came down to the last go round winners dictating who would walk away with the coveted gold buckle. Region V is so proud of our alumni Cody teel on his average win in the bull riding. as Joe Beacher stated, the average gold buckle is the second most important buckle awarded in each event, it shows the abilities of the cowboys and cowgirls to be consistent when competing against the best in the world. as Region V members prepare for 2016 many made new year's resolutions, promising to practice harder, focus more and strive for perfection. Region V member Autumn murray’s new year’s resolution is to let her horse do its job, for her to always do her best, and to give everything else to God. With those goals in mind i think she will be very successful this year. another Region V member, mackenzie Foley said that her new year’s resolution is to be more dedicated to keeping her horses in shape and to practice every spare moment she can. She also wants to be the best she can in the rodeo arena, but more importantly be a

better christian role model through her actions and words. at the other end of the arena, saddle bronc rider Jack wright said, “My new year's resolution is to get on as many horses as i can to be a better bronc rider, because when i ask the lord for his help i have to make sure i’m MACKENZIE FOLEY doing my part and putting in the work.” Just like autumn, Mackenzie, and Jack i encourage you to make a new year’s resolution and set goals for yourself. By making goals you set yourself up to focus more on beating your last best time and bettering yourself. a new year means new opportunities knocking at your door, take advantage of them and make this year better than the last. the outcome of the year is up to you, so make the best of every situation, think positive, and always trust in the Lord through everything. i hope that 2016 brings you all runs on top of the ground, no broken barriers, no missed mark outs and the best draw of the herd. Happy new Year and remember to Let Go and Let God!

Farm & Ranch Family The folks at McCoy’s Building Supply understand that it takes a lot of hard work and the whole family pitching in to get things done on a farm or ranch. That’s why we’d like to take some time out to salute Texas High School Rodeo Association families who are farmers and ranchers. In our monthly Farm & Ranch Family Spotlight, we’ll feature one family, sharing their story of how they work together as a family to make their farm or ranch successful. The spotlight will run for 10 months; each month will feature a different Region. Each Regional McCoy’s Farm and Ranch Family will receive a $100 McCoy’s Gift Card. The McCoy’s Farm and Ranch Family of the Year will receive a $500 McCoy’s Gift Card and will be announced at the 2016 THSRA State Finals.

The Lyne Family of Region VII by Catelyn Felts

congratulations to the Mccoy’s Farm and Ranch Family of the month, the Lyne’s! Phil and Sarah K. Lyne, tanner Green, and amanda, Shorty and London Gorham own and operate the Baylor Ranch located in cotulla, texas. the family also runs cattle on land they own in George West. the family has lived on their ranch in cotulla for 35 years and now run several head of cattle. While Phil and Sarah K. are the managers, the whole family helps out when necessary. they run a cow/ calf operation, guide private whitetail hunts and they own Phil Lyne’s services LLc, which is a clearing company. typical responsibilities on the ranch include: branding, earmarking, and vaccinating cattle, checking waters, and checking on the ranch in George West. Most of these tasks are a family affair; however, when Phil is out of town, tanner is put in charge. in addition to the cow/calf responsibilities, tanner helps with the wildlife management, and he has around 30 roping calves and 35 roping steers that he is responsible for. “it takes the whole family to kind of stay on the same page, it’s team work,” Sarah K. said. “We can just about finish

each other’s sentences.” When the family is not ranching there’s a very large possibility they are at a rodeo, practicing for a rodeo or hunting. “Some people go to Hawaii or disneyland for vacation, we pretty much rope and hunt everyday,” Sarah K. explained. tanner Green, Phil and Sarah K.’s grandson, is a tHSRa Region Vii member and a competitor in the team roping, calf roping, and steer wrestling events. “the responsibility and the self discipline that he has gained from the ranching lifestyle has carried over to the rodeo arena,” Sarah K. said. “He does something horse related or cow related everyday; that’s all he has ever known.” tanner’s dedication seems to pay off as he has seen great success in the rodeo arena. He first represented texas on the national level his sixth grade year as a member of the texas Junior High Rodeo association and has qualified for nationals every year since. He has also won several awards/honors from various associations including the UStRc, tYRa, and YRa. However, we all know success takes a little bit more than hard work and dedication; success takes a strong support system as well. “We all rodeo,” Sarah K. said, “and we love to watch our grandkids rodeo. this is our vacation. if our grandkids decided they wanted to go pro, or whatever, we would support them 100 percent.” though the ranching and rodeo lifestyle is not the easiest way of life, Sarah K. explained how the family loves the freedom the lifestyle allows. “it’s a different way of life, but it’s a great way of life.” the family said they are honored to be chosen as this month’s Mccoy’s Farm and Ranch Family and they are thankful for Mccoy’s partnership with the tHSRa.

SECRETARY SHOW OFF By LAUREN KEENE

– ARIAT Performance Reporter

H

ey Region 6, this month i would like to recognize our wonderful, hardworking secretary Mrs. nena Boettcher! Having been raised in alpine, tX, nena has been around the rodeo atmosphere all her life. Growing up, she enjoyed showing lambs, steers, and pigs. Her only brother, turtle Powell, made it big in rodeo; he is a 6x WnFR qualifier. Mason and cade are her two sons, who are both involved in the rodeo community. Mason is a member of the WcJc (Wharton county Junior college) rodeo team, and cade is a proud member of tJHRa Region 7! Both her sons have always been around youth events in many organizations. Harlan Boettcher is her loving husband, and the party of four calls a 200-acre ranch in east Bernhard, tX home. nena is a very busy lady, juggling her duties as secretary with her job at Ranch House designs. taking our previous secretary’s place, Laura Goodman, is a hefty task, and nena took the challenge in early november of 2014. She also took the job at Ranch House designs in 2011 as an administrative director, but is now an account manager. talk about being

tough! i don’t think anybody could do what she does, which is why we all should value her work. nena definitely has her work cut out for her, and she is unbelievably putting one foot in front of the other. So Region 6, all hats off to our talented secretary, nena Boettcher!

he time, money, and patients we put into our rodeo careers is truly amazing. Yet rodeo isn't the only sport most high school students participate in. it takes a support system greater than we can even imagine for each person's success in rodeo or in other sports. Rodeo truly is made of the best people because it's the best sport. the dedication it takes to successfully rodeo is tremendous and this must be met by you and your support system. For some people they are their own support system. You might ask what is a support system? Well when it comes to the subject of rodeo most people mean those who help with the success of a person. Rodeo is the greatest because of the sportsmanship we have. our sportsmanship is so great it's talked about so often it's like one big family of great people. Money is one of the greatest aspects of rodeo success. You buy horses, cows, steers, feed, hay, tack, and many more things we don't even think about on a day to day basis. think of one sport that requires half as much as rodeo. Many people can't afford rodeo completely especially when getting started. at this point it's the best time to show off your learning and your aspersions towards your success. Because rodeo is made up

of sponsors there would be no rodeo without sponsors. if you don't have the funds or want to aspire others it's a great thing to go look for sponsors they just don't have to come to you. time is another great big part of success. With time is dedication. together there success. taking time out of each day is what is most important. as everyone says practice makes perfect so of course we practice every day. tuning on barrel horses, roping calves, turning a few steers, or even simply exercising your horse requires time. the time to keep you and your horse(s) in shape and able to participate is a great abundance. Most sports practice almost every day in season then out of season occasionally, but not here in the rodeo world our lives are rodeo we enjoy every minute of it and we aspire to reach great goals. We make sure we do whatever it takes time, money, and support to do what we love.

PERFORMANCE REPORT

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND THANK YOU 2015...

By Melissa

W

Garcia – ARIAT Performance Reporter

ow! it is hard to believe that 2015 has come to an end. Let the resolution making begin. With the new Year here it’s the perfect time to reflect on your accomplishments in 2015. it’s also the perfect time to look back at the wonderful memories that were made and also evaluate your behavior or habits from the past year and make positive changes. consider doing things differently. i’m sure we all have a list of things we would like to change about our previous lifestyles, but sometimes a lengthy list of resolutions can be intimidating. You start to think, “How am i ever going to keep up with all of these?” or, “i won’t see these through.” Studies show that half of the people who make new years’ resolutions have given up on them by the end of June. in other words, half succeed and half decide to give up. Which half do you want to be a part of? the best way to see your resolutions through is to start small, make resolutions that you know will be easier to keep. if your resolution is to

start working out, try going to the gym two to three times a week, rather than six or seven days a week. if you are going to be travelling on the rodeo road a lot this year and know you won’t have time to get into the gym then try to make more conscious decisions about what you’re eating. try and get your family or friends to do it with you, having people understand your struggles and successes makes the challenge seem a bit easier to accomplish. With the 2016 rodeo season beginning there will be a lot of people trying their very best to secure the top 10 spots for texas High School Rodeo State Finals. Most regions will be finishing up in February which is just around the corner. a few things to keep in mind during your last few rodeos. Stay positive and always give your very best. You are only as good as you make yourself. Put in those extras hours of practice during the week. try perfecting that swing or dismount. Watch your videos to see where you can improve. Remember every second counts. Seniors that are applying for college and scholarships be aware of deadlines and stay on top of your applications and submissions. this is not our parent’s responsibility it’s ours. deadlines are set for a reason. i want to wish all of my fellow seniors the best of luck with any high school rodeo titles you are trying to clench. For me personally this year has gone by so incredibly fast and i am so thankful for my friends and family that have made it so memorable. i know i could not have made it through this year without two very important people in my life. i can’t say enough about them and can only hope they know how important they are to me. My aunt, celina Fetty, who also happens to be our Region Viii Secretary/ treasurer and amy Williams who is like a second mother to me. not many people know this, but i lost my mother when i was 11 years old to brain cancer. it was all very sudden and unexpected. although this was the most difficult time in my life these two amazing women stepped in without hesitation and made these past few years amazing, especially 2015. i have been so incredibly blessed with strong people in my life. they are willing to do whatever it takes to help me succeed. they both stood by me and supported me through the good and the bad never quitting. therefore; my new Years’ resolution is to neVeR quit or even think about quitting and to stay positive during my thought process.

“Success in life comes when you simply refuse to give up, with goals so strong that obstacles, failure, and loss only act as motivation.” ~ Unknown

PERFORMANCE REPORT

By EMALEE HOFFMANN– ARIAT Performance Reporter

I

hope each of you and your families had a very Merry christmas and brought in 2016 with good tidings. We had our last two rodeos of 2015 on Sunday, november 23rd in crockett. We started the morning early and it was a very busy day. Many of our contestants had productive days shaking off the cold weather and the nervousness. Briahna west, a freshman at Willis High School, stated that she was striving to make top twenty in barrel racing this season. She and her horse have started to click as the season goes on and she sees tremendous improvement in the way her and her horse perform as a team. She has really enjoyed Region iX and is looking forward to our next rodeo in January. two of our Region iX contestants that showed how well they were

STORMY STOKES

performing were team roping partners, Hailey Bruening and sammy Carranza. they placed 10th in rodeo #6, but came back strong to win first in rodeo #7. the rough stock was a nail biter as always. even with some old injuries, Boudreaux Campbell had two successful rides of a 73 and 69, winning both rodeos. shelby Poorman also came to win and placed top ten in both pole bending and barrels in the KENNA KAMINSKI & STEVEY RAY PAYNE second rodeo. We are more than half way through our rodeo season, yet we should still be setting our goals for 2016. Maybe it’s a continued goal from last year or something new that you’ve been thinking about. Your goals are waiting to be accomplished. are you ready to make this your best year ever? if you will always be resolute and LANE ARDOIN, TAYLOR HURST strive for this, each year will be better & DESMON JOHNSON than the previous. What other goals are you considering this year? Possibly, starting that new colt, making better grades or helping serve at our upcoming rodeos. one of the best things we can do to make ourselves better is to set goals. they don’t have to be huge, they can be small and meaningful. “Goal setting is a powerful process for thinking about your ideal future, and for motivating yourself to turn your vision of the future into reality the process of setting goals helps you choose were you want to go in life.” Goals help us realize what we want in life and we should all be setting them every day. Sometimes in order to achieve our goals, you have to give up something. Maybe it’s a little less time watching television and a little more time on the things that are important. it is the sacrifices that we make that helps us realize how much we truly are trying to reach our goals. Sometimes we may need to adjust our goals, but we should never give up. Be patient and determined once you set your goals, because they are just waiting for you to accomplish them. Write down your goals and post it where you can see it. Be sure and share it with your friends and family, because you can always use the encouragement along the way. always work to achieve your goals, don’t forget them because they are shaping who you are and what you are going to accomplish in life. PERFORMANCE REPORT

Region X Members in Las Vegas!

By BROOKE

F

BOILES– ARIAT Performance Reporter

or those of you who attended the 2015 national Finals Rodeo, know that many old and newly familiar faces from Region X were out and about around Las Vegas seeing all that it had to offer to you rodeo fans! Region X is proud to announce we had some of our very own, Cooper mathews and Chantz webster out of high school along with our junior high contestants Jordi edens, Kade Berry, Cinch moody, and memphis shelton, competing at the Roy coopers

invitational calf Roping in the bright light city. By the end of the week, cooper Mathews ended up third overall. He roped in one of the four head matches Friday, came out ahead with the win, so advanced into the top eight roping on Saturday. cooper won the first match Saturday so then made the top 4 but came up short, by 0.3 seconds, losing to make the final three match but still cinched down the third place spot. cooper states, "it was a great experience because it's not every day you get to rope in a set up like the one they had in Vegas doing nothing but match ropings, which i think is awesome. Match ropings help to make you a really tough competitor. i enjoy them a lot, and would love to be apart of it again." as all rodeo competitors know, things don't always work out as planned. Sadly, Region X's chantz Webster experienced that luck but still left with a tremendous outlook on the experience. He claims, "Getting to rope in Vegas was a great opportunity and experience. the atmosphere sort of sets the stage for what it would be like to rope in the thomas and Mack, which is something you can't find anywhere else. to rope for that kind of money and to be invited as one of the top 16 in the nation was quite a privilege." to see those who have grown up in high school rodeo go on to be a part of, and accomplish great things as many of our contestants do is a success for not just them but for the region as well. to have been able to play a role in so many successful competitors lives is an honor on the associations part. congratulations to all of those who competed and succeeded in Las Vegas.

KASEY KRETZSCHMAR by catelyn Felts

The Whataburger Whatakid is selected due to their ability to excel both in and out of the rodeo arena. Whataburger is proud to recognize a THSRA member from each of the ten Regions who truly upholds the title “Whatakid!” One of the nominees will be chosen at the State Final Rodeo in June as the Whatakid of the Year. In recognition of this accomplishment they will receive free Whataburgers for an entire year!

congratulations to this month’s Whatakid, Kasey nicole Kretzschmar! the Region Vii member is a Junior at east Bernard High School and has been a member of the tHSRa for three years now. Kretzschmar competes in barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, breakaway roping and cutting. outside of the arena, she is an a honor roll student as well as a two-time all district Varsity cross country and track athlete. She is also a member of the FFa and the Future Business Leaders of america. With her long list of activities, a long to-do list only seems fitting. a typical day in the life of Kretzschmar starts each morning at 5 a.m. for cross country practice. after, she goes to school from 8 a.m. to 3:25 p.m., and heads home to finish any homework she has. once she is finished with homework, she begins practicing for rodeo. “i usually ride three to four horses each day,” she said. “i will tie goats and rope after i have ridden everything and after that i feed everything for the night. i try to

be done by 10 p.m. each night.” even though rodeo practice can make for late nights, Kretzschmar said she does not believe she has had to sacrifice anything. “i have missed things at school, but i wouldn't want my life to be any different. i love to rodeo.” one of the many things she said she loves about the sport is her equine teammates. “i am really proud of all the horses i haul, they are all special to me,” Kretzschmar said. though she has quite a few, the horse she spoke of most was Frosty. the red roan doubles as a goat tying horse and breakaway roping horse. Kretzschmar’s family bought the horse as a twoyear-old, sent him to be trained, and have been riding him ever since. “For the last nine years, i have hardly ever loaded up to go to a rodeo without him, he’s a cool horse,” she said. in addition to her equine athletes, Kretzschmar said she is very thankful for her family. “there are many people in my life that i look up to, so there is no way i could pick out just one specific person i look up to most.” Without them she said she would not have the opportunity to rodeo and because of them and the tHSRa, she said she has learned “that to be successful you have to work hard and stay dedicated.” the lessons she has learned from the tHSRa go hand in hand with the quote she strives to live her life by, “the difference between successful people and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.” Kretzschmar’s dedication and desire to succeed is made evident through her success in and out of the rodeo arena. She said she will attend college, but she hasn’t decided where she wants to go or what she wants to major in; however, she would like to pursue a career in professional rodeo running barrels. congratulations to Kasey on being selected as this month’s Whatakid. We know she will continue to do great things, and we wish her the best of luck in all of her future endeavors.

JUNIOR HIGH

TEXAS JUNIOR HIGH RODEO ASSOCIATION NEWS

D

ear Junior High contestants and Families, Happy new Year! i can feel it – 2017 is going to be an awesome year! it is time to make those goals for the year and accomplish them. as many of you watched the nFR this past month, i watched a calf roper accomplish a very big goal of his. caleb Smidt is my sons age so i have known caleb and his family for many years. We all knew that caleb had what it took to get to Vegas and knew one day that championship would be his. now if you would have told caleb this a year ago he would have never dreamed it would have been this year. don’t get me wrong at the end of the year he was back on track and roping better than ever. caleb was in a very bad accident in the practice pen and had to fight his way back from just to walk much less rope another calf. caleb is very goal driven though, and puts his mind to something and finishes it. during the nFR i watched caleb and i can tell you he put on a clinic that every young cowgirl and cowboy needed to watch. consistency, he used each calf he had and made the best run possible on every calf he drew. this is the hardest thing to learn in the world of rodeo and especially in the lights and sounds of Vegas. But, if you can take one thing from this year’s nFR think about that! Yes he placed high some nights but other nights he was doing what it takes to win an average. We wish caleb the best of luck this year as he starts out this year on top of the world. also his wife, Brenna and he are expecting their first baby, so there are lots of exciting things going on in that family. congratulations caleb and Brenna! So now that i have told you a little about what i saw at the nFR, you can apply that lesson to the rest of your region rodeos – consistency! if you are not where you want to be in the region standings, just start building your results now – one rodeo at a time. You may not be in the money each time, but if you go and make the very best run you can, each time it will build on the next one and when the finals come you will have reached that goal. then when you get to the state finals and your goal is to go to nationals (which i know that is everyone’s goal) again think about that consistency one round at a time, short go and there is your goal. at the end of this month the student officers and i will be traveling to chattanooga, tn for midwinter conference. i always look forward to getting away with the officers so we can all get to know each other better. i am also excited because i have always wanted to go to tn and this year we will get to go twice, once now and then to Junior High nationals. So next month i will let you all know how that goes. Remember you need to start talking to your schools noW about the state finals. We know this year especially you will still be having school. the dates for the finals are May 22 – 28, 2016, so start making plans with your schools now. if you have any questions please let me know. Until next month, hope everyone stays warm! - anne dollery

THSRA Student Officers at the NFR! Kadie Beth Wisener, NHSRA Vice President and Miss NHSRA, Chloe Costello are both THSRA members, who took us on their NFR, Las Vegas adventure. Kadie Beth started her journey by getting on a plane and heading out, when guess who was on her plane‌ the one and only Martha Josey! Once in Vegas they met up with their fellow NHSRA officers and prepared for an action packed week. Other officers include NHSRA & THSRA Queen Chloe Costello , President Shelby Rasmusen , Vice President Kadie Beth Wisener & Secretary Sydney Hurley. Working the NHSRA booth they posed in front of the NHSRA banner that has the past NHSRA members that are competing at the NFR including Luke Branquinho who stopped by for a picture. They also attended the NFR buckle ceremony and got a chance to stand on the same stage with many champions. Thank you ladies for representing Texas and high school rodeo well!

For videos & to order, check us out online.

Roping has evolved more than anyone could have expected, times have changed, and Cactus is releasing the newest element to the Game - a nylon-poly blend, 4stand, with a full body, smoother crowns and extreme durability. Full body means a larger loop that will stay open easier and achieve enhanced consistency. Push the limits and change the existing situation in a significant way. That’s a Game Changer.

INTRODUCING THE NEWEST ELEMENT: The Game Changer 4strand by Cactus.
