egion One is beyond excited to share with you it's five 2017 National Qualifiers! Congrations to Bret Bernard, Jake Baca, Colton Baca, Layton Butler and Shelby Espenson. Bret Bernard is a back to back State Champion Trap Shooter, and he is also the reigning National Champion. Last year during the National Trap contest Bret blew people away with his perfect score of 100 out of 100. Bret started shooting Trap after undergoing several knee surgeries and was no longer able to kneel in the Light Rifle contest. Before each shot Bret says he imagines breaking each target. Along with imagining each shot he prays before each and every
LAYTON BUTLER
shot. “It keeps everything off my mind, so when I get ready to say ‘pull’ its all business, it's ready to shoot and all my focus is on trap.”Bret says he’s not worried about anything for nationals. “There’s obviously a large target on my back and that obviously carries some extra weight on my shoulders, but I’m not worried. Whatever happens, happens and God still gets all the glory.” Jake Baca finished third in this years Reining Cow Horse State Competition. Jake has SHELBY ESPENSON been competing in Reining Cow Horse for almost two years after buying and training a colt. Jake was the first to go in the short go and knew he had to good. “I knew I needed to have a pretty big run to have a shot at going to nationals.” Colton Baca grabbed the final spot in Reining Cow Horse. He owes his stat in Reining Cow Horse to his brother who got involved after joining the Texas Tech Ranch Horse Team. Colton says he will have to COLTON BACA focus on his nerves headed into nationals. Layton Butler snagged third in the Girls Breakaway. Layton says, “Honestly I wasn’t worried about much, if there were any worries it was breaking the barrier.” Layton just knew that she had to be confident. Her goal for nationals is to have good times and rope solid. All Layton could think about during the short go was being fast. “I just knew I had to be fast, so I pushed it.” Shelby Espenson walked away from state as the new THSRA State Champion Barrel Racer. Her goal for nationals is to have three clean, solid runs. When Shelby enters the
JAKE BACA
alley she says all that goes there her mind is to kick! When asked how it feels to be a State Champion, Shelby says it feels “Awesome!” Region One congratulates each and everyone of you, who competed at state this year, and commends all of your hard work you put in. Good luck to all of who headed to nationals and do Team Texas well. “Good Luck to everyone from Team Texas and it was pretty special going last year and Team Texas bringing home the
trophy so I'd for sure like to see us go back to back in that and just have fun in Wyoming, it's just a special time and not very many people get to do this so enjoy it and just embrace everything that's happened.” - Bret Bernard, 2016 THSRA State Trap Champion, 2016 NHSRA National Trap Champion, 2017 THSRA State Trap Champion.

he Texas State High School Rodeo Finals has come and gone once again, and the national qualifiers have been announced, Region 2 had some exceptional athletes qualify for nationals. A big congratulations to the national qualifiers from Region 2; and they were, Paydon Hooper, Brendan Bennett, Walt Arnold, Reagan Jordan, and Dalton Kasel. Region 2 has faith in these athletes that they will show what Texas is made of while they are in Gillette. In speaking to a few of these athletes it was discovered that to them this is just a mind game. Of course you do need a great horse, or bull, to get you to the point that they are at. Reagan Jordan qualified for nationals in Poles in the number two spot, with her horse Lil Joe. Reagan came out winning our region in Poles by 40 points. So coming into state we knew she would do exceptionally well. There is always a deeper story behind something and Reagan has one of these stories. When asked if there was something she overcame to get to state, she told me how her horse had to be rehabbed from an injury for
four weeks. This only gave her two weeks to ride Lil Joe and get him back to his original self. She stated that she had to not only build her confidence back up, but her horse’s confidence at the same time. She just needed that satisfaction that she could still compete at the level she was at before the injury. Then when asked what her motivation is, she told me that she “loves the sport and wants to be able reach the next level and compete well at that level.” In the conversation she told me that the shock of making it to nationals is still sinking in, but she plans to treat it just like any other rodeo so she doesn’t get in her head and make a crucial mistake. Now you see that most of what she does is her telling herself that she can do it and the horse must feel this also and I feel that is why Walt Arnold, who qualified in the steer wrestling, did so well at State. When asked how it feels to make it nationals Arnold that it feels good to get to go and that since his goal is to win wherever he goes so he is going to treat nationals just like any other rodeo. He also said that his motivation is that he likes the lifestyle and thinks it’s pretty great to be able to travel the country doing what he loves. He thinks you have to do the best with what you got at a rodeo. Paydon Hooper and Brendan Bennett qualified for nationals in the cutting. Paydon ended up second overall and it is no surprise since her brother was a national champion boy’s cutter a few years back. Brendan Bennett ended up fourth in the boys cutting and there is no question why. The Texas State Finals is definitely where the elite compete. Not only did
WALT ARNOLD
region 2 show what they have everyone else did also. It was tough competition all week and in the end everyone did everything to the best of their ability. Even though the competition was tough everyone has something to improve on, because you can never be perfect. The rodeo is not the only thing Region 2 did well in, our parents won the adult truck push. Some of our Region 2 contestants also did really good in some of the jackpots that went on throughout the week. We also had our queen, Paydon Hooper, representing Region 2 all week. Primetime was a hotspot throughout the week from what I hear. Everyone also enjoyed the speech from Joe Beaver at the general meeting who pumped us up for the rest of the week. Although the rodeo is what we were there for there was so many other things going on. Region 2 was able to get through the other festivities and end up with five national qualifiers. We want to see our Region 2 competitors do the best they can do at Gillette and wish them the best of luck. Congratulations to all of the tougher than ever Region 2 because you all showed what you’re made of!

Modus Operandi
By SAWYER PRZILAS
S
– Performance Reporter
ummer time; the weather gets hotter, the rodeos last longer, and chores from parents seem endless. For many, the summer is a time to recuperate and reinvigorate the fire in the practice pen. While there is no offseason for rodeo, (obviously) summer is however, the offseason for region rodeos. In any offseason it is apparent the enigma of progressing is to emulate the most successful runs. Usually, there is success in this procedure in the practice pen. When relaxed yet focused, goals are shattered with Herculean strength. Why is this? Why are the best runs made
JAKE VANCE photo by Jennings
in the practice pen, runs deserving accolades made with vigorous consistency easily achieved in the practice pen, yet when faced with competition that talent is sometimes locked away? Imagine molecules of gas in a large container with no pressure, they float lazily and the gas is stable. Now, we will take the gas and force it into a smaller container as well as add pressure. What happens to the molecules now? They are superimposed slamming around in a frenzy. The gas, no longer being stable, is not able to behave as it would in a typical state. Your thoughts are the molecules and your brain the container in this rather winded analogy. The practice pen is the first comparison, it is a relaxed place where the thoughts come smoothly, and the desired SHERIDAN CLARK results are achieved. The photo by Jennings rodeo is the next situation, while the thoughts are not changed, pressure is applied and the thoughts are condensed and swirling. With a state of mind comparable to a hurricane in a bottle, how can one expect to perform comparably to the perfection of a practice pen run? Practicing is methodical, immaculate runs are made over and over. But, in a rodeo situation those methods seem to be forgotten with a tendency to overstress and overcomplicate a situation. The phrase, “Modus operandi” would be beneficial there. Modus operandi needs to become a mantra in the rodeo arena, it means process. The benefit of this statement that needs to be interpreted here, is that trusting your work you put in and not pressuring yourself up will take those practice pen runs out of the mental cage they retreat to. Modus operandi, trust in the work you have put in. It is easy to get caught up in winning, going to state, and other such prizes. Is not the work and the level of skill you practice with enough to do so? Every rodeo is just another pen, if making your best run is what it takes to win, it is counter-intuitive to pressure yourself up and change the process. The best runs are made in the practice pen, so make the rodeo your practice pen. Relax, trust in the process, and remember; modus operandi. Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. – 1 Corinthians 9:24 Congratulations to everyone from Region III who is advancing for nationals! Ty Harris, Jake Vance, Kelsey Hancock, Colby Fedor, Wyatt Bray/Zant Lewis, Ty Harris/Paden Bray, Lane Cooper, and Sheridan Clark. I hope this article finds you in time and is beneficial, not just to you but to anyone who seems to be in a rut when it comes to rodeo! Also, congratulations to Region III parents for literally pushing their way to reserve champion truck push.

he Texas High School State Finals were last month, leaving us with the state champion in each event and three other hard working national qualifiers. As we all know Texas is one of the toughest states in the entire country to compete in rodeo for; so if you make it to the Top 10 in your event you know your hard work paid off. The 20162017 event winners were Leighton Berry in the Bareback, Will Polluck in the Saddlebronc, Shelby Espenson in the Barrel Racing, Jordi Edens in
the Breakaway, Ty Harris in the Calf Roping, Shayanne Baurele in the Goat Tying, Reagan Davis in the Poles, Clay Islet in the Steer Wrestling, Cutter Ducket and Jesse Hines in the Team Roping, Ross Freeman in the Bull Riding, and lastly Lane Cooper won the Boys Cutting and Sheridan Clark in the Girls Cutting! These girls and guys put in a lot of hard work and set their sights on the coveted State Champion title and they achieved the dreams that so many have once chased after! The one long week in Abilene, Tx will give reward to the long and strenuous hours spent in the practice pen, making it all worth it! Congratulations to all the Team Texas National Qualifiers, and good luck in Gillette, Wyoming!!

Born into multigenerational ranching families, both Brandon and Marie are now creating their own unique ranching legacy to pass on to their children. They have not only committed their life’s work to protecting and preserving this way of life for their family, but also are advancing and innovating to create new opportunities for future generations. Along the way, they have generously welcomed numerous families onto their operation
to experience ranch life, share their love of horses and support the sport of youth rodeo. Brandon, a fifth generation rancher, never doubted ranching to be his life calling. As a toddler, he would travel with his Dad to the family ranch near Christine to join the operation. Even at a young age, he enjoyed all aspects of ranch life, from working cattle to learning the economics of a sustainable beef cattle operation. He also has a lifelong love of horses and early on began immersing himself in the family’s ranch horse business assisting with breeding, green-breaking and training horses. Even today, much heart
is put into the Smith’s equine operation. Brandon is a visionary and an entrepreneur, starting his own herd at 23 years of age. He has the heart and the stomach for what can often times be a volatile business. Like many respected cattlemen, he is a man of few words but always seems to be in the right place at the right time to offer a support and leadership when it seems to be needed most. Marie’s family has been in ranching since 1857. She comes from a long line of strong and smart Texas Ranching women with remarkable business savvy, who throughout history, have been a cornerstone to their families ranching success. Marie’s great, great grandmother, Ellen Campbell Tom is credited with saving their cattle operation, after her husband was gored to death by a Texas Longhorn, while raising her five children, despite the dangers and hardships. Mrs. Tom was very successful and continued purchasing land eventually acquiring a large holding of South Texas ranch land. Marie brings that heritage of resilience and fortitude to their personal operation. Since they started their own operation comprising crossbred cow-calf pairs and replacement heifers in 1996, Brandon and Marie have drawn on the rich legacy of generations before them while constantly seeking new opportunity to ensure their operation is sustainable for their children and their children’s children. Over the last 20 years, they have
grown and diversified their operation in New Mexico and Texas. They now run a commercial irrigated hay operation, background cattle on winter grazing and summer grass pastures across numerous counties, retain feeder cattle in several Texas feedyards, own and manage a trucking operation, and have built an equine operation along the way. Front and center of all their ranching endeavors are their two wonderful children Emma May Smith (age 14) and David Aydan Smith (aka Aydan or Boomer) (age 11). Brandon and Marie have instilled the ranching family values of self-reliance, integrity, generosity and kindness in these children who also share a love of the family business. At only 14, Emma has already shown strong interest in the family’s business and is currently taking coursework to help her prepare to be a good steward of their operation. You can always find Boomer enjoying ranch activities. Like his father, he listens more than talks, but it’s easy to strike up a conversation if it’s about ranch life. His passion for the ranch is evident. Both are very bright, respectful, hard-working children...a rarity in today’s culture. The Smith family also gives back. Their philanthropy has touched the lives of numerous agricultural families from 4H, FFA, rodeo, etc. They are often the first to offer a helping hand, a horse, etc. to support and encourage children who share their passion for agriculture, ranching and rodeo. They also willingly give their time and talents in numerous volunteer positions, especially in Region 8. We are happy to recognize them with the McCoy's Farm and Ranch Family Award.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
O R
ver their years as a sponsor of the Texas High School Rodeo Association, Whataburger has featured many promising Whatakids. Looking back on the 2010 Whatakids of the Year, Rachel Rule and Bryce Barney, Whataburger wondered “where are they now?” The folks at Whataburger caught up with the two winners to find out what they’re up to seven years later.
RACHEL RULE (2010 Whatakid of the Year) Provided by Whataburger
achel Rule has always loved rodeo. If the name sounds familiar, it may be because the 2010 Whatakid of the Year has been competing in the professional rodeo arena and continues to reach new heights, thanks to the lessons she learned through Texas High School Rodeo Association (THSRA). Born and raised in Blue Ridge, Texas, Rachel wanted to try every rodeo event she could growing up. “I competed in five events – the barrels, poles, goat tying, breakaway and cutting,” Rachel says. She found the spirit of competition thrilling and says she couldn’t get enough of it. Rachel’s parents, who also were involved in rodeo through their previous experiences as a team roper and cattle rancher, also encouraged Rachel to try out different events to see what fit, and to work hard to pursue the event that she most enjoyed. Rachel attributes her success inside and out of the ring to the one simple principle of hard work. Competing in a variety of events taught her the hard work it takes to be successful, a skill she’ll always use, especially as she does now in pro rodeo. “More than anything, rodeo has taught me to keep going when things are tough and don’t ever give up, because you’re not ever going to get any better without hard work,” Rachel points out. The value of hard work has given Rachel learning experiences she applies today. These days, Rachel travels for pro rodeo and competes in the barrel racing event. It’s her rookie year and she continues to set high standards for herself – her current goal is to win the Rookie of the Year title for WPRA. She also completed her college education at Sam Houston State University, so while she’s continued staying involved in rodeo and refining her skills, she remains committed to her education outside of the arena. As for her current favorite Whataburger order - it’s the #7, a Whataburger Jr. with a Dr. Pepper, which she enjoys during the many early mornings and late nights that come with the rodeo life. Rachel is also thankful for the comradery and sense of family that rodeo has given her, a bond that is forged through the grit and determination of athletes. “When I was on the bloomer team in high school, I really felt like we were a close-knit group, because we were always there for each other,” says Rachel. The teammates’ devotion to each other inspired further discipline and provided an example of
22
the work ethic she wanted to emulate in the future. If she were speaking to someone in high school today, she would tell them to “never give up on your dreams, whatever they are.” She adds, “even though there are challenges and tough times, if you pursue what you are most passionate about, and work really hard, you’ll have something to be proud of at the end of each day.” We look forward to watching Rachel succeed in the future, thanks to the hard work and community of support she’s built through THSRA.

“Y

our outlook determines where you end up and you should surround yourself with people who build you up,” is the unifying theme of the lessons learned by former Whatakid of the Year Bryce Barney. Positivity and a strong community have helped him grow into the person he is today, and Bryce credits his involvement with Texas High School Rodeo Association (THSRA) for spurring his growth. Bryce became involved in rodeo at the tender age of five, along with his brother, through the Pineywoods Youth Association. The siblings’ parents encouraged them to join, as they’d also been involved in rodeo (their father was an expert calf roper). Rodeo became the family tradition, and Bryce, who hails from Carthage, Texas, continued to pursue his favorite event – “riding something that bucked.” Though he started out with steer wrestling, roping and heeling, when he was in high school, his friends challenged him by entering him into a bull-riding competition for the first time. Much to Bryce’s surprise, he won. Stories like this one are one of the reasons community has become an important part of Bryce’s success. “It’s important to surround yourself with good people who you look up to, because they challenge you to become better and do things you didn’t think were possible,” Bryce says. He adds, “when you have a strong support system, they remind you of your full potential.” Another key to Bryce’s success is all about having a positive attitude. “Rodeo is a humbling sport, so no matter the circumstance you must stay positive and keep your mind sharp,” Bryce adds. To him, “having a good attitude and not getting down in the dumps are keys to long-term success, no matter how much work or time success may take.” He also notes that it’s important to accept life as it comes, because, especially with rodeo, “some people just have to grind a little harder to pursue their goals, and that’s okay.” The Whataburger Patty Melt with no onions (and a heaping helping of Whataburger’s Spicy Ketchup) has also been one of his favorite ways to refuel after tough workouts. Bryce’s grind has certainly been paying off. Bryce attended Panola College, where he graduated in 2013. He was the first rodeo team member to ever receive the Buddy Lowery Award presented to the outstanding athlete at Panola, all while being ranked third in national collegiate rodeo. He qualified for the college national finals in calf roping that same year, and later went on to qualify for the Cowboy’s Professional Rodeo Association (CPRA) finals in 2015. Outside of the ring, he continued his education at Sam Houston State University and graduated in 2015 with a degree in Agriculture Engineering Technologies. Bryce currently works in the oil and gas industry in the Permian Basin. He also takes part in raising the next generation of rodeo athletes as an instructor at RE Josey's calf roping school in Karnack, Texas, teaching them the valuable lesson of keeping a positive attitude and contributing to their community.

By HARLEY JO PERKINS – Performance Reporter
A
s the 2017 Texas High School Rodeo State Finals come to a close, Region V pulls away with not one, but two state champions! Senior, Ross Freeman, and Sophomore, Reagan Davis, leave Abilene with the titles of Bull Riding State Champion and Pole Bending State Champion. To get an insight on how they practice at home for their performances in the arena, I’ve asked Ross and Reagan a few questions that every rodeo contestant runs through their mind. Our State Bull Riding Champion was willing to walk me through his warm up. Ross says that before he rides, he stays

in the routine of stretching and staying as loose and cool as possible. When Ross stepped over into the chute on his short-go bull, his routine came into play and earned him another great eight second ride. When the buzzer went off, Ross was glad to have covered another bull, a great way to end his final trip to Abilene. Ross summed up this journey to becoming a state champion in one word, blessed. “Rodeo is a roller coaster. Lots of ups and downs. You have to smile through the ups and smile through REAGAN DAVIS the downs and never let what happens photo by Jennings today effect what you do tomorrow.” With these wise words from our new bull riding champion, we are able to roll right into the next interview I covered with none other than my pal, Reagan Davis. Just as Ross said earlier, Reagan agrees with the fact that rodeo life is definitely a roller coaster. I asked Reagan how she and Jazz have had to adapt to one another to make the awesome runs they’ve laid down. “Jazz hates her mouth to be touched and has made me ride more with my feet.” It’s very important to be coordinated with your horse and know all the things you could improve on, and that’s just what Reagan did. “Part of the reason we ran a 19.9 in the short-go was because I went back on videos trying to figure out what I could do to help her around the end poles we were having trouble on. Our success has been made by many compromises between the two of us!” Jazz and Reagan make a great team. They’ve conquered obstacles that every contestant faces and have kept pushing through to the end to own the sweet, sweet victory. When I asked Reagan what the most important lesson she has learned through rodeo was, this is how she responded. “I think that would have to be to let God handle all of your problems in the way of your success and give all the glory to Him. I for sure couldn’t have made it through all the hard times without my Lord and savior at my side working things out. Many prayers were said on the way to this state title! Rodeo has proven to me in multiple situations that He will always be right there with me at all times!” With these wise words from your state champions of Region V, we encourage you to keep pursuing those goals you have set for yourself and continue to be the best athlete you can be! State championship titles are not earned off of anything less than commitment and determination. These interviews are just a sneak peek into what kind of competitors we have here in the Biggest, Baddest, and the Best region in Texas! Congratulations to all the short-go qualifiers from Region V and we would like to wish the best of luck to all four of our national competitors, including Elizabeth Clymer and Nathan Socia! Region V applauds all the contestants that have earned their trip to Nationals and we pray for safe travels to Gillette! “The man on top of the mountain didn’t fall there.” – Vince Lombardi

egion VII brought the Southeast Texas heat to Abilene for the Texas High School Rodeo Association State Finals, where the top competitors from each event went up against over 650 other total competitors and 974 total horses. Throughout this high school rodeo season, the competitors of Region VII, along with their parents, have dedicated their time, money, and most of all their perseverance to being the best student athlete and horse team in the region with the hopes to show the state and nation their abilities. These continuous sacrifices throughout the year brought all of the contestants right to the edge, and every student athlete worked hard to be the best they could be by the
end of the regional rodeo season. For many this hard work paid off by being rewarded with the opportunity to attend the THSRA State Finals at the Taylor County Expo Center. All of the state finalists performed to the best of their abilities, and showed off the results of year-long competition, Region VII work ethic. For three competitors, these state performances paid off by allowing them to reach the National High School Rodeo Association Finals in Gillette, Wyoming in four different events. Luke and Brooke Krolczyk from Cypress will be attending Nationals to show off their calf roping and goat tying skills respectively. Along with Luke and Brooke, Kasey Kretzschmar of East Bernard will put the skills that made her the 2017 and 2016 Texas All-Around Cowgirl on display in barrel racing and girls cutting. While in Abilene, the athletes of Region VII were involved in much more than the rodeo events. The Texas State Finals held activities such as a dodge ball tournament and truck push contest for competitors of all regions to battle it out without the need to be horseback. Alongside the events put on by different sponsors, jackpots were
held nightly for contestants to hone their skills and compete in a less stressful environment. In between runs, competitors could browse the vendors in the Display Hall, or explore the different attractions both the Expo Center and Abilene had to offer. When it came to the actual go-rounds there was never a dull moment as the Outdoor Covered Arena, Coliseum, and Horse Barn arenas constantly held lots of fast paced action. Joe Beaver stated to all of the contestants that Texas is the hardest state to compete in at a high school rodeo level, and his argument was proven as competitors across the state and from Region VII performed to the best of their abilities. Joe told everyone that you only have to go out there and be the best you can be for one minute, and that’s just what the athletes of Region VII did, both at the regional and state level. Looking back at the progress made by all the athletes of Region VII, Southeast Texas has a bright future ahead for next year’s High School Rodeo season.

Figge – Performance Reporter
y name is Claire Figge, and I am your 2017-2018 Region VIII Ariat Reporter. Firstly, I'd like to congratulate everyone from Region VIII that made it to Texas High
School Rodeo Association (THSRA) State Finals, whether you've been with our Region for a while, or it was your first year. It's an accomplishment in itself, as many of you know, just to pull
through the entrance of the Taylor County Expo Center, with your horses in the trailer. This June was quite an exciting one for Region VIII, filled with ups and downs. A few of our regions contestants were knocked down early in the week, suffering from unexpected injuries, but with the Lord's blessing, they were able to compete again, and Region VIII came through strong and dominated. We sent 10 riders back to the short go, and seven made the top four, in their event. Region VIII is proud to say that Will Pollock, Brandon Lansford, Shyanne Bauerle, Jacob Patterson, Justin DeLaGarza, Will Wright, and Kate McNeil, will be competing at the National High School Rodeo Finals, and representing our region. Two of these qualifiers were named 2016-2017 THSRA State Champs. In his third year with Region VIII, Will Pollock won the THSRA State Title in Saddle Bronc Riding. "If you're going to do rodeo, don't do it half way. It's not a sport that half of your mind can go to. You need to put everything you have into it, if you want to win," Will said, when interviewed after his short-round ride. Shyanne Bauerle, a freshman, took home a THSRA State title as well, after winning Goat Tying in the 1st go and short go. Her recommendation to region contestants is, "Never stop having a positive mindset, always continue to give 100% effort, no matter the situation, and remember to always stay humble." Along with being greatly blessed during the week of State Finals, Region VIII had the amazing opportunity to give back to others. The contestants set aside an afternoon of their precious time to help out with the Special Kids Rodeo, and it was a heartwarming experience. Region VIII Queen, Annika Aasbo, said, "Being able to share our passion and love for the sport of rodeo with the children at the Special Kids Rodeo is so important. It is such a blessing for them to experience a small part of the sport we so cher-
ish." Region VIII is proudly supported by Cactus Ropes. Mike Piland, VP at Cactus Ropes says the Special Kids Rodeo is one of the highlights at state finals. Region VIII was proud to have Mr. Piland in our section during finals. When June rolls around every year, we do, unfortunately, have to say goodbye to some of our contestants. I'd like to say farewell to all our seniors from Region VIII. They were an important part of our region, and we are sad to see them go. William Wright, Ana Casas, Morgan Arnold, Justin Medina, Kylie Goebel, Logan Quinn, Mollee Herrmann, Arlis Bluntzer, Meaghan Welch, Call Brown, Whitlee Whitlow, Mikaela Loman, Gus Hohman, Hannah Allison, Iliana Medina, Zoey Wiatrek, Gabriel Gonzales, Jesse Dena, Mario Landa, Arturo Munoz, Jacob Patterson, Justin DeLaGarza, Kacey Meinhausen, Luis Feliciano, Brady Campos, Lauren McIntosh, Coby Elias, Faith Gonzales, Daniel Arroyo - you will all be missed. We wish you the best in this new chapter of your lives! It was a fun week, made possible by our amazing parents, board, and sponsors. We look forward to watching Region VIII dominate at Nationals! Safe travels to Gillette, WY.

he Texas High School Rodeo Finals started out in “royal” fashion as Region IX’s very own, Abbie Suggs, was crowed Texas High School Rodeo Queen. Abbie won the title with wins in impromptu speaking, modeling, speech, appearance, personality and a tie for horsemanship. Round one saw many Region IX athletes see success, but Carley Staggs and her amazing mount LouLou were a standout as they clocked a smoking 20.261 to take the win. Sonora Schueneman also clocked well in the goat tying with her quick hands to earn a 2nd place finish with a tie of 7.660. Sonora also showed she could run with the best of them as she also placed 4th in the barrels along with Ashley Castleberry who took the 3rd place points and money. Breakaway ropers Molly Atkinson and Taylor Lawson earned points too. Molly roped in a speedy 2.30 to win
3rd and Taylor tied for 8th with a 2.56. Our boys also found some success in round one where Region IX’s All Around Cowboy, Spin Edwards placed in the calf roping and team roping. Spin earned points for calf roping with a 10.07 and with the help of partner Blake Johnson earned points in team roping with a tie for 6th with a 6.64. In addition to Taylor and Joe earning a spot in the short go, Region IX also had Ashley Castleberry, Kelsie Winfrey, Jessica Garrett, Darcy Taylor, Lacey Bruening, Lyndie Dunn, Spin Edwards, Sonora Schueneman and Aly Ghormley. When the dust had all settled and the runs were all completed, Region IX earned two additional spots to take the trip to Gillette, Wyoming with Abbie. Sonora Schueneman continued to be consistent in the goat tying and tied another 7 second run to earn the Reserve Champion title, and Aly Ghormley also earned the trip finishing up third in the average. While the pressures of competing can often bring about stress, our athletes were able to have a little fun in many THSRA sponsored activities like the Hooey Boot Race, Tug O’ War and the Truck Push. With the help of our number one cheerleader, Kim Ackel, Region IX brought home the win of the Henson Truck Push and earned free steaks compliments of Joe Allen’s Steak House. Another fun and rewarding activity during the week was the Cavenders’ Special Kid’s Rodeo where THSRA athletes were able to share their love of rodeo with some very special children. Congratulations to everyone who qualified for State, for that in itself is a great accomplishment, and good luck and safe travels for Abbie, Sonora and Aly.

Round two continued to be promising in the goat tying where Sonora was another 7 to earn 6th place points, while Region IX goat tying champion, Lacey Bruening earned 4th for her 7.36, and Aly Ghormley finished 2nd with a 7.09. Past State Champion Pole Bender, Pamela Henderson, also got on the board with a quick weave through the poles of 20.429 to earn a place in the top ten. Ashley continued to find success inside the coliseum in the barrels finishing up 6th, along with Region IX Barrel Racing Champion, Kelsie Winfrey, who also placed in the top ten with a very tough field of competitors. Another past state champion, Taylor Lawson, continued to show why she won state last year by finishing up in the top 10 again with a 2.92 and earning a spot in the short go. Joe York also earned a spot in the short go with a 5.31 in round two to

T
LETTER FROM TJHRA STATE SECRETARY, ANNE DOLLERY
he Texas Junior High State Finals are going in the books as one of the best yet! The weather was perfect and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. I know some went home disappointed that they did not do exactly what they came for, but others went home knowing there was a next step! WE are headed to Lebanon, Tennessee, this is the second year we are headed to TN and have heard that there have been several improvements. The 2017 National team is going to go to Tennessee hoping to bring the trophy back to Texas. We have a great team headed South for this year’s finals. Hopefully that trophy will be coming home with us this year. If you can not be in TN with us make sure you tune into the live feed on the NHSRA website to cheer Texas on to the National Championship. Until next month…..see you down the cowboy road!
