THSRA State Finals: It’s More Than Just a Rodeo Cullen Eppright–

ith 1,282 members, and only 60 spots on the national team, Texas has to go big to determine who our winning national team will be. Our week long state finals, with two days of slack and seven performances, was held June 5 thru 13, was packed with action from Top 10 competitors from each of our 10 regions in the state of Texas. Before any rodeo action began at the

Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene, a General Meeting was held, with words of encouragement from 8-Time World Champion, Joe Beaver. Texas High School Rodeo and it’s regions awarded $248,000 in scholarships to over 100 hardworking competitors to enable them to continue their education. During this meeting, Region 4’s Chloe Costello from Kaufman was named Miss THSRA. After the meeting, the quest to become a Texas State Champion was on. We saw several great runs during the week, but the fastest ones were Zach Hibler’s 78 point ride in Bareback. Samray Hooper and Hunter Hicks tied in Boy’s Cutting both turning in a score of 149, Keyshawn Whitehorse spurred a bull to 85 points, Layton Myers tied his calf down in 7.72, Blaise Freeman marked a 75 in the Saddle Bronc, Steer Wrestler Kayne Partin threw one in 3.95, Tanner Green and Coleby Payne roped a 5.45 in the Team Roping, Colleen Bridges scored a 299 in the Reined Cow Horse, Avery Weatherman turned in a time of 19.81 in the Poles, Kambria McDougal clocked a 15.831 in Barrels, in Breakaway, Brogan Macy roped a 2.21, while Kaylee Campbell in the Girl’s Cutting was a 149. Last, but definitely not least, Laramie Zant set a new arena record in Goats with a lightning fast 6.49 second run. Although we had blazing fast runs, the state champions crowned were: Bareback, Zach Hibler from Wheeler; Barrel Racing, Ava Antolik from Georgetown; Boys’ Cutting, Samray Hooper from Andrews; Bull Riding, Boudreaux Campbell from Crockett; Calf Roping, Chantz Webster from Lipan; Girls’ Cutting, Eva Blanton from Dallas; Goat Tying, Mersadie Martin from Lufkin; Pole Bending, Avery Weatherman from Balmorhea; Reined Cow Horse, Colleen Bridges from Kilgore; Saddle Bronc, Blaise Freeman from Gail; Steer Wrestling, Kayne Partin from Kosse; Team Roping, Header Slade Townsend from Fredonia and Heeler McCray Profili from Anderson; Light Rifle, Morgan Myers
from Somerville; and Trap, Easton Power. Our All-Around Champions were Chantz Webster and Laramie Zant from Shiner. Rookie All-Arounds were awarded to Josh Briggs of Pilot Point and Lena Whitehead of Point. AQHA Boy Horse of the Year was awarded to Tyler West of Mertzon, and AQHA Girl Horse of the Year was awarded to Raelee Self from Sumner. Other awards included the Sprit Award, what was awarded to Cheyenne Britian from Dublin; Ariat “Put Your Best Boot Forward” Award recipients were Preston Young from Arlington and Tacy Webb of Midway, and Teskey’s Top Hand Award was presented to Jesse Valdez from Dimmitt. While the arena showcased the elite competing, the Texas competitors also know how to have fun. The Ariat Olympics consist of a “Queen’s” Contest and a Tug of War. The Queen’s Contest has three parts; Part I consist of getting to know the lovely ladies and their handsome escorts; during Part II, the master of ceremonies, who happens to be our announcer, Chris Rankin, interviews the contestants asking various questions; and finally, in Part III, all contestants sing their hearts out to Shania Twain’s song, “Man, I Feel Like a Woman.” This year we had everybody form ballerinas to Fallon Taylor look-a-likes. In the end, the Region 5 ballerina, or should I say, Region 5’s Tyler Crone, won the contest and got all the bragging rights, as he has had queen dreams since his Freshman year. There are videos and pictures on the THSRA Social Media sites, as well as Jennings Rodeo Photography Facebook. The queens then helped pull for their region in the tug of war, and Region 7 dominated. Our Dodgeball Tournament was sponsored by the American Fellowship of Cowboy Churches. Each region competed for Cici’s Pizza for their region. The champions, Region 1, enjoyed a pizza party afterwards. Ariat also sponsored added money jackpots throughout the week, which was fun for all. Our Texas Ram Dealers sponsored the Ram Truck Push to see which region could push a truck the fastest to win a steak dinner for the whole region catered by Joe Allen’s Steakhouse. The mighty Region 7 came out on top. Dale Brisby was also on hand to emcee the event, because “kings run with kings, ol’ son.” Heel-O-Matic also sponsored a King of Reach Contest everyday. One of our newest sponsors,
Pro View Equine Surveillance, brought in some big time names. Tyson Durfey and Fallon Taylor were on hand during part of the week to sign autographs and give tips to competitors. One of the most touching things of the week was the Cavender’s Boot City Special Kids Rodeo. It is a special time for our competitors to teach these children how to rope, run barrels, weave through poles, and let them pet goats and dogs. This year, we had a miniature pony so all could mount up and take a picture. Cactus Ropes and Resistol Hats brought Lari Dee Guy and Kelsey Thompson to the grounds to give a free roping clinic. Whataburger presented What-A-Rodeo night, in which Region 6 parent Jackie LeJune attempted to toss balls into Whataburger barrels attempting to win free Whataburgers for a year. But the crowd was the real winner, as they recieved a free Whataburger. McCoy’s Building Supply sponsored family rodeo night, which included Mutton Bustin’ for the little ones and fans could get a hot dog and a fountain drink for $3. Thanks to our friends at Bloomer Trailers, Lisa Sue McQuinn was named as the winner of a brand new 2-horse Bloomer Trailer. Ulen and Beverly North from Stanton bought a $5 raffle ticket from their grandson, and ended up winning the 2015 Ram 1500 truck provided by the Texas Ram Dealers. Contestants were also able to dance the night away several times during the week. During the Voting Delegates’ Meeting, contestant representatives elected Cullen Eppright as THSRA President, Raelee Self as Vice President, and Ima Champion as Secretary. As you can see, Texas knows how to have fun and how to rodeo. All of our rodeo action was broadcast live online thanks to the sponsorship of Boot Barn. Team Texas is looking forward to bringing the heat to nationals and plans to bring the national team trophy back to Texas, where it belongs. Good Luck Team Texas!

2015 Whatakid of the Year Kolton White
C
ongratulations to the Whatakid of the Year, Kolton Kevin White! The 18-year-old senior is attending Roxton High School in Roxton, Texas. Kolton is a Region IV native and is an all around guy both in and out of the arena. He competes on both ends of the arena and participates in several extracurricular activities at his high school. Kolton has been a varsity athlete in three sports including basketball, baseball and track, his entire high school career. He is also an FFA officer, Spanish Club president, and BETA club member. On top of extracurricular, Kolton has managed to stay on top of his grades as he has been an A honor roll student throughout his four years of high school. Though busy with school, Kolton does not let his extracurricular activities interfere with his dedication and success in the rodeo arena. He is a competitor in the team roping, calf roping, steer wrestling and bull riding. When asked his life motto, Kolton replied, “If you’re going to do something, go all out. Don’t halfway do anything.” I think it’s apparent that Kolton lives by these words as he has seen success on both ends of the arena, and has gained several championship titles in each of his events. In 2009 he was the Jr. High National Champion Breakaway roper. Since then, he has gained several all around titles, as well as, Region IV rookie of the year, Region IV champion bull rider 2012-2014 and he is currently leading the bull riding for Region IV’s 2014-2015 rodeo season. A day in the life of Kolton consists of waking up and taking care of his livestock. He then takes a shower and goes to school all day. Afterwards, he attends basketball or baseball practice (depending on the season). After practice he heads home to practice team roping, calf roping and steer wrestling. He also makes time to ride all four of his colts, as well as any outside horses he has. On the rare occasion that Kolton is not at school or practicing for rodeos or sports, he enjoys hunting, fishing and riding his colts. Napoleon Hill once quoted, “With great success comes great sacrifice,” and when asked what sacrifices he has had

to make for rodeo Kolton replied, “Throughout my rodeo career, I have had to deal with many injuries. From these injuries I have gained patience, and pure love of the game because whenever you can’t participate and you just have to watch you realize how much fun it really is.” Kolton credits his dad for instilling in him a good work ethic and says, “My dad is my hero, because of his work ethics and everything he has done for our family and me.” Kolton also looks up to his close friends, Bryce Braden, Carson Hicks, Jase Holder and Shawn Luman. Aside from success, Kolton has gained a lot of friends through rodeo and THSRA and has made a lot of memories that he will never forget; however, he looks forward to the friends and memories he will make in the next chapter of his life. Kolton plans to continue his rodeo career on the collegiate level at Southeastern Oklahoma State University on a rodeo scholarship this fall. We know Kolton will continue to see great success and we want to wish him the best of luck in all of his future endeavors!

Over the years Whataburger has featured many Whatakids and this month they wanted to find out “Where are they now!” They tracked down former Whatakids of the Year, Kadyla Alford Cowdin (2008 winner) and Paul Melvin (2011 winner), to see how these former Whatakid are doing.
kAYlA AlFoRd CoWdin (2008 WHATAkid oF THe YeAR) Nearly eight years after being named the Texas High School Rodeo Association’s (THSRA) Region 5 Whatakid of the Year, Kayla Alford Cowdin still has a lot to celebrate. Kayla received numerous academic and athletic accolades while still making the time to take on leadership positions in both her school and the THSRA. She attributes a lot of her success and hard work ethic to the rodeo lifestyle she grew up to know and love. “Rodeoing was a family occasion and was such a big part of my life that helped shaped me into who I am today,” said Kayla. “It laid the foundation for the responsibility and care giving I practiced back then, which remain to be two very important skills I consider my biggest assets today.” When Kayla was honored for as Whatakid in 2008, she had hopes and plans to pursue a nursing career at Stephen F. Austin. Today, Kayla has not only accomplished her dream of becoming a registered nurse, but is also close to completing her master’s degree to become a nurse practitioner. Kayla often thinks about her life growing up in rodeo and how that experience continues to add value to the ways she’s able to manage and care for others today. “Ever since I was old enough to walk, I’d go to the barn by myself each day to feed and care for our horses,” said Kayla. “Being able to manage four to five horses at a time is very similar to managing patients, and as a nurse, you quickly realize you’re the one responsible for other people’s lives.” Just as she diligently cared for horses at a young age, Kayla relies a lot on the important skill set she honed back then in order to take on her new pressures as a nurse. “If I wouldn’t have had rodeo to make me aware of the responsibilities I’d later be faced with, I don’t know how I could have managed being a nurse at 22 years old. Rodeo helped me mature at a younger age, and I’m now able to take the same nurturing position I did back then and translate it into how I care for patients today,” Kayla explains. “It’s funny, animals have personalities just like people. I still see a lot of the same qualities I used to see in my horses as I see in some of my patients today – some are more anxious than others, like my horse Jack, while some are completely laid back and worry-free.” Kayla continues to live out her title as Whatakid, whether in the arena or as a nurse. THSRA remains a place she can always call home, and she still enjoys being involved with her family who help provide stock for the competitions. Together with her husband Dustin, Kayla currently lives in her father’s hometown of Augustine, Texas just 20 miles away from where she grew up in Center, Texas.

Paul Melvin (2011 Whatakid of the Year) Looking back at Paul’s early success in rodeo, it’s no surprise that nearly 10 years later he continues to impress crowds in arenas all across the state and parts of the Southwest region. Although, he wasn’t always eager for the rodeo lifestyle, it continues to be the ride of his life. “Learning a new craft isn’t always easy, but with enough practice and hard work, I quickly developed a passion for rodeoing,” said Paul. Paul’s father Marty Melvin was a NFR champion back in 1989, so Paul had been exposed to rodeo at a young age leading up to his career competing in the Texas High School Rodeo Association (THSRA). With a good teacher by his side, Paul soon discovered his favorite competitions when he joined steer wrestling and team roping in Region 3 rodeos. As his skills matured and led to a decorated career in THSRA, Paul began to dream beyond high school rodeo and decided to pursue new and exciting opportunities that would not only challenge him, but also would later prove fruitful and provide for him and his family. He was on a fast track from beginning amateur rodeo at 17 years old to being recruited for college rodeo at Texas-based Weatherford College, then onto pro and now national rodeo. Paul has placed at numerous competitions, including being recognized as an American semi qualifier the past two years at the American Public Rodeo – one of the top five paying rodeos. Paul attributes his success to three things: listening first and talking second, knee-high socks and spider webs. “I’ll admit, I had a couple of superstitions that started in my high school rodeo days,” said Paul. “First, I had to compete with socks that had good elastic and went up to my knees. If my socks weren’t right, I knew I wasn’t going to do any good.” Paul goes on to explain his other vice when preparing for a competition started in high school when caring for one of his favorite horses with a distinct long, platinum blonde mane. “I probably spent a little too much time getting my horse ready for competitions,” Paul explains. “I learned how to braid her mane into several different patterns, but only one truly ‘stuck.’ Whenever I’d braid her mane into a spider web, I performed well, so my friends started joking at competitions saying I was ‘getting sticky.’ However at the end of the day, Paul credits his success to the most important skill he learned during his years in the THSRA, which was to listen first and talk second. “Most people would say the main thing they took away from rodeoing was learning the value of responsi-
bility, but for me, it was practicing the virtue of patience,” said Paul. “When holding leadership positions in any organization, it’s important to be able to listen to every angle of a situation in order to discern what the actual problem is. Being a director in THSRA, I learned my biggest value to my peers was to be solution-oriented and use my position to positively impact the others around me.” Now married and finishing up his bachelor’s degree at Weatherford College, Paul’s determination and smart voice of reason has brought him far in the successful life he’s made for himself. s we wrap up another year of high school rodeo region one is sadly saying goodbye to our secretary of 11 years Mikey Duggan. "There are just so many great memories" Mikey says. She told me she still remembers the first contestant she met when he turned in his membership, Copen Puckett, and of course the freezing cold Gruver rodeo when it took 30 miles down the road for her toes to thaw out. Mikey says the thing she is going to miss the most will be the families of region one. She says even though she really liked her position in the rodeos she is ready to have a little time off and catch up on some of her hobbies, being outside and read
her books and not feel that she has something that needs to be done. She is also ready to catch up on movies. Mikey says she feels like it is going to be strange for a while but she still plans on attending high school rodeos to watch, and she isn't through with rodeo secretary and timing just yet as she still has her summer PRCA rodeo plans and timing at the finals. When asked if she would ever return to be a regional secretary she said it wasn't a garantee no, but she needs a break from it although she feels she will still be involved in some way. Now let me introduce, Debra Dorenkamp, the newly hired secretary says she is excited to be working with region one and thinks this position will be a perfect fit for the next chapter in her life. Debra worked as a preschool teacher in Grenada Colorado where she is retiring after 18 years. She has two kids, Kelly and Kara. Kara high school rodeoed in Colorado and still does. Debra says she rodeoed as a young girl but became more involved when her daughter started high school rodeoing. Debra has 40 plus years of rodeo secretary and timing background. She has timed for many rodeos in her past including the national finals rodeo, Albuquerque, Rodeo Houston, Nampa and more. She was also co-owner of Dorenkamp rodeo company from 1980-1993. In Debra's free time she enjoys watching all kinds of sports, designing, photography, and has a t-shirt printing company. Debra says her favorite thing about rodeo are the contestants and their families and she hopes to see the region participation grow and high school rodeo be a positive influence on the rodeo contestants and youth involved. I'm exited for the next semester to start and I can't wait to start high school rodeo.

The Philips Family of Region IX C by Catelyn Felts
ongratulations to McCoy’s Farm and Ranch family of the month, the Philips’ family from Region 9! Jason, Carol, Paige, a THSRA Region 9 member, Ben and Audree Philips run the RLR Cattle ranch, which is a cow-calf operation that focuses on embryo weaned calf program located in Madisonville, Texas. The RLR Cattle ranch has been in the family since Paige’s great grandfather, Ray Reding, started the cattle operation in 1941. “We later started the embryo transfer business in 1997.” The Philips family runs their ranch on a mix of owned and leased land and run anywhere between 1,200 and 1,400 head of cattle. We all know the ranching lifestyle takes a lot of work and requires a lot of hard labor. We also know it definitely takes a group effort in order to keep things running smoothly. The Philips family has definitely grasped this concept as the kids in the family, Paige, Ben and Audree, began helping out on the
ranch when they each hit the early age of three years old helping pen cattle! “As they have grown older, they have helped with getting semen ready for their dad to artificially breed the donor cows, and do whatever else is necessary to help with the day-to-day operations of our family business.” Other daily tasks on the ranch include, tagging, PaiGe PhiliPs working, checking and feeding the cattle. During breeding season, times get extremely busy forcing the family to divide and conquer. “Carol does the bookkeeping for the family, keeping up with records of clients’ cattle and our own cattle. Jason does the artificial insemination process with clients’ cattle, tags calves once they are born, and manages donors (client’s cattle), Tracy Williamson, Paige’s uncle, checks heat on recipient cattle, and feeds cattle, and Ray Lee Reding, Paige’s grandpa, attends three PaiGe PhiliPs cattle sales a week buying replacement recipient cattle and stocker calves. Him and the kids also help wherever they are needed.” Though the ranching lifestyle can take a lot of time and hard work they take pride in the family oriented lifestyle they partake in. They are also proud of the fact that commercialization does not affect their family business. “Our thought on it [commercialization] is, we are a family owned and operated business and take pride in being able to make our own decisions pertaining to our business.” They are honored to be McCoy’s Farm and Ranch family of the month and shop there for all of their fencing and barn material needs. When asked what it meant to be selected as McCoy’s Ranch family of the month, Paige replied, “As a senior, it is a great honor to receive the McCoy’s ranch family award. I joined the Texas Junior High Association and have been a member ever since. We enjoy reading about the other families each month and feel very privileged to have been selected for the award.” Good luck to Paige on her final semester as a THSRA member and a big congratulations to the Philips family!

s the year is wrapping up and the 2015 THSRA State Finals have come to an end, Region 2 is left with four state champions! Samray Hooper, Blaise Freeman, Katy Armstrong, and Avery Weatherman all worked extremely hard and had a great week at the finals which earned them their new state champion titles. Our region trusts that it will be well represented in Rocksprings as we have seen the great character, work ethic, and determination that these kids have. Samray Hooper did very well in the boys cutting this year. He was in the top six in two rounds which helped

him earn the title of 2015 THSRA Boys Cutting Champion. On top of this, Samray was the national champion cutter in 2014! Hopefully, he will be able to bring home another national title in 2015. Blaise Freeman turned in three good in rides in the saddle bronc riding and was consistent in riding each of his horses throughout the week. Freeman's consistency was key to his victory in the saddle bronc riding. Katy Armstrong also had a very consistent week in the breakaway. She caught all three calves to make it back to the short round and win the breakaway championship. The pole bending was very exciting for Region 2. Senior Avery Weatherman won all three rounds and became the state champion pole bender her final year of high school! Finals Rodeo. Other than the rodeo performances, there were lots of fun things to do at the expo center and around the town in Abilene. Four event state qualifier and freshman, Kenna Hayes Mcniell, when asked what her favorite part of state was, responded, “My favorite part of state was gaining experience for future experiences.” She also shared that she made sure to take care of business before she had too much fun in order to have a successful week at state. Sophomore Tanner Freeman, who qualified in the calf roping and team roping, said that his favorite part of state was competing with people from all over the state of Texas, meeting new people, and making new friends. One of Freeman’s favorite things to do was play pool; which seemed to be a favorite with lots of the contestants and everyone who came to the Cowboy Mall during the week. Besides the pool tables, the Cowboy Mall offered lots of fun shops and booths to shop around in throughout the week. The special kids rodeo was a blast; it was a great time getting to meet and help the kids who came out! Contestants and rodeo fans also enjoyed competing and spectating at the Ariat Olympics and Dodgeball Tournament and the Dodge truck push. Region 2 had some comic relief during the week as we tried to operate a “selfie stick” to snap some shots with pros like Fallon Taylor and Tyson Durfey. Overall, we had a great week in Abilene and lots of fun art the 2015 THSRA Finals and look forward to next year. The kids in Region 2 were very successful in and out of the arena this year. Region 2 is confident that it will be very well represented in Rocksprings, Wyoming this year at the 2015 NHSRA Finals.

he sport of rodeo can be as taxing mentally as it is physically. Every athlete's ability to perform boils down to the mental strength behind both their preparation and execution. Rodeo is ninety percent mental and ten percent skill, ask any athlete from rodeo to golf. Your ability to win comes down to your mental toughness. So how do you prepare yourself mentally? The same as you would physically. For every run you must put yourself in the mindset that your next calf or steer is at regional finals or state finals. Put yourself in the position to win. If you go out to practice and you do not envision yourself somewhere such as state or nationals but just another rodeo, you are not doing yourself much good. Every calf, steer, goat, barrel or pole should be at the National Finals Rodeo or regionals or even state, not only as a source of practice to learn to deal with the mental strain, but as a tool to become a champion. I sat down with professional rodeo athletes, Tyson Durfey and Fallon Taylor at the Pro View Equine Digital Surveillance trailer
at the state finals and they had great words of wisdom about the importance of mental toughness. Tyson Durfey made the point of taking negative thoughts captive (when interviewed). Sure it is impossible to fight off negative thoughts slinking in your mind. While you cannot control the formation of these thoughts, you can control how they affect you. You have the choice to let the thought take its toll on you, or you can combat those negative thoughts. Having your ace horse out to simply being scared, you must have enough mental strength to tell yourself, “Yeah, I might not have my best horse or the best calf but that will not affect my ability to perform because I am confident in myself to achieve my goals.” You must have the confidence that you have the pattern down or the livestock caught before you ever reach the box or the alley. The pros are the athletes who are just like myself and you all. They all started from the same place as any of us; however, they trained themselves harder mentally, putting themselves in places of stress and places where the competition is steep. So I invite you all to begin to condition yourselves mentally every chance you get. Every practice run from the play dummy to the practice pen needs to be backed by a run in your mind. The more adversity you put yourself through in the practice pen the more hits you can take when the money is up. Do not make the mistake of envisioning a perfect run or livestock draw. Realistically the perfect livestock and run do not happen often, so why take the mentality they do? Think about the mistakes that you are prone to. Take those mistakes and envision the way you can eliminate them. If you come in too early on the first barrel, imagine running to your spot before you start in. If you have trouble gathering your calves legs because he kicked, do not picture the calf laying perfectly. Make the calf kick or rope him by a back leg and learn to tie it no matter the tricks attempted by the animal. If you go to the horn too fast as a heeler, make yourself hold the slack until the steer pulls your hand down. The same goes for any event. Isolate your mistakes and break the run down. Then picture yourself combating those mistakes. Let's face it, every run will have something quirky about it. The athletes who win are those who have trained themselves to counter those little bobbles both mentally and physically and these are the people who perform to the top of their ability. The other mental side of rodeo is being able to apply what you envision when you practice to the arena. You must remain calm and have the faith that you have your run down. Do not worry about how fast you need to be. You cannot make a twelve second calf become an eight second calf just because
you would like that. That saying applies to every event. If your horse does not buck to be an eighty, you cannot make it score eighty. If your barrel set-up is seventeen seconds, do not try to make it a fifteen second run. However, you can take those runs and have the confidence as well as the mental toughness to do your best on that run and that is all you can do. Lots of people talk about how fast they need to be in order to win or move ahead. That is a mistake. You are better off keeping your mentality the same all around. Do not change your mindset of scoring or turning at the correct time just to win. Go execute the basics of that run and go “Rope your roping,” as my father will always say, keeping the mental toughness you have been exercising. You will have more success by staying the same rather than changing. You have been preparing yourself to go run your run. Why change that up at the rodeo? That defeats the purpose of all the practice and preparation you just spent to get where you are. Worry about making your run mentally tough and correct. Then let the cards land where they fall. Every athlete must also stand in the right state of mind with God, knowing that he will aways be with you at any point in your life. Sohere is a scripture to think about as you work on your mental toughness and your relationships as Christian athletes: “We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.” (2 Corinthians 4:8-9).

L
ast month, over 650 contestants from all over the state of Texas made the move to Abilene, calling the town their home for a week. For some, it was the trip of a lifetime. For most, it wasn't the trip that they planned for. But for all, it was another great State Finals, filled with friendships and memories that will last a lifetime. From the fun and games of the Ariat Olympics, Truck Push, and Dodgeball Tournament, to the intensity of the
championship round, the entire week was filled with the highs and lows of the toughest competition in high school rodeo. I recall one person saying, "I know that we already have a National High School Rodeo Finals, but in my mind, this is where the real finals is." They're bold words, but so true. A
s Region V members put Abilene, Texas in their rearview mirror it may not have been the finals many hoped for but it was definitely one we dream of; competing against the best cowboys and cowgirls in the State of Texas. Region V was represented in all areas of the
arena with Tyler Crone and Logan Cook being crowned the 2015 THSRA finals King and Queen, we know their parents must be so proud! Region V also had 12 competitors make it back to the Short Round with Mersadie Martin and Keyshawn Whitehorse heading to Nationals in Rock Springs to represent the Biggest, the Baddest, the Best in Goat tying and Bull riding. Congratulations also go out to Ima Champion, the new THSRA Secretary. Not only was our week filled with fierce competition but also fellowship and fun and the opportunity to put things into perspective especially involving the special kid’s rodeo. What a privilege it was to share the love of our animals and the great sport of Rodeo with the true champions in life, our special needs cowboys and cowgirls. Win or lose in the arena we should always strive to be an inspiration for those less fortunate than us. As our week drew to a close and the short round began, social

s people look at our contestants in the state finals they don’t see the real work that has gone into getting that chance to compete or the results that follow. Our entire family in Region 6 has really sacrificed so much of their time to lock in their spot. Adjusting to different horses, maintaining grade averages, giving up social lives outside the arena, making time for the many hours of practice, and missing out on school events have been a few challenges on everyone’s plate this season. Even when faced with the loss of a family member, our drive to achieve goes on. It really is an opportunity to see miracles happen and a lesson of faith for those affected. Many of us have grown up rodeoing; others have begun
the trend in their family. But whether it’s your first year at state, fifth year, or you have yet to qualify, prioritizing your time really counts. Being able to compete at a higher level, making life-long memories with friends and family, the thrill of competing with kids all over the fine state of Texas, and just competing as a team with our region, are just a few reasons why everybody loves this state organization and the final round of competition. Trevor Brazile once said, (he is a THSRA alumni), “You better work hard, you better get used to it, it’s not a one-time thing because if you’re gonna make it in rodeo; you better make a habit of it.” Who knows, maybe even you will be the next 21 time World Champion! State really sets you up for your future career in rodeo. Going from high school rodeo, to college rodeo, to going professional is everybody’s dream. We get so angry for not laying down a perfect run, but just take a deep breath and keep pushing towards those gold buckle dreams. So don't give up, if this is your dream be prepared to work hard, ride hard and if you have a setback there is always another rodeo and chance to succeed.

bilene, Texas, is the home of the Texas High School Rodeo Finals, and in my opinion, is the best of the best high school students competing for a spot on the national team. We all had dreams of Rock Springs, Wyoming,but it can't work out for everyone. For some, this week brought tears of joy and for others it's disappointment. For those who leave the finals empty handed don’t forget that the Texas High School State Finals are the toughest Finals to qualify for, so making this far was a huge accomplishment! Going to Abilene is full of great experiences! What makes these finals special isn’t winning or individuals and their events but its about Regions coming together to support one another. Each region is just like a team! You learn to be a team player and to support your competition. The Finals offer great experiences, a chance to meet new people and make new friends from different regions, you can’t get that
anywhere else. These are the little life lessons that make it all worth it and all this comes from a week of memories at THSRA finals. Region VII went out with a bang this year at the Texas High School Rodeo Finals. We are sending the toughest cowgirls and cowboys from Texas to Nationals this year and 13 of those happen to be from the magnificent Region VII. This year at State, Region VII proved that we are the best inside and outside of the arena. If you couldn't make it to the Dodge Truck Push or the Ariat Olympics you missed out. We started off our tremendous week by winning the Ariat Olympics and the Truck Push, those two wins just motivated us for a few more. In poles Bayli Sabin will represent us at Nationals, in breakaway Bailey Reina, Coleman Franz in Steer Wrestling, Haley Allison and Madison Rucker in Girls Cutting, Tanner Green and Coleby Payne in Team Roping,and Lane McGehee and Paden Hurst in Bareback. Region VII is going to be represented greatly in Rock Springs.

Region VII and Texas at Nationals. Don’t forget that all this couldn't happen without the support of our parents, grandparents, sponsors, and friends. Without all those people High School Rodeo would not be possible. At the end of this exciting,
fun filled week we need to remember who helped us get there and say “thank you.” There is no doubt we had an amazing State Finals in Abilene. Region VII is truly made of champions. Good luck to everyone in Rock Springs, Wyoming this year.

LOVE OF RODEO

t takes strength, determination, good work ethic, and over all just the love of rodeo. A lot of time and money go into being a part of the rodeo world, and I feel that the contestants of Region VIII, along with all the other regions in the state of Texas, share the same love for the sport of rodeo. It is where lifelong friendships and the best memories are made, along with learning experiences and knowing how to handle a loss. President of Region VIII, Mr. Jeff Elsworth, has been involved with Jr. High/ High school rodeo for six years now and we couldn’t be more fortunate to have him. From dragging for us barrel racers, to staking the ground, to helping insure that our region runs as smoothly as possible, Mr. Elsworth has been there through it all. Elsworth said he decided to get involved as our President because he, “enjoys the organization and all the families involved and have always tried to volunteer my time to help keep our region running smoothly. It takes many people to run each of these rodeos and thankfully, Region VIII
has a great group of volunteers each year.” There has never been a time where I see him not helping or not in the alley way helping his daughter, Tristin Elsworth. Mr. Elsworth resides in Mission, TX with his wife Michelle and his three kids. He enjoys rodeo, going fishing, playing golf, and has won a few saddles and buckles in his team roping days; now Elsworth says “the past six years have been dedicated to hauling barrel horses.” When asked what his favorite thing about high school rodeo is, Mr. Elsworth responded that he enjoys watching high school rodeo grow over the years and that there are so many great opportunities for us kids in regard to scholarships that help further our education as well as help us build a strong work ethic. “Rodeo helps teach kids responsibility for their animals and themselves. Rodeo has also been a great platform for fellowship. Our children meet rodeo families from other areas and become lifelong friends. Some of the best friends in our life right now, we consider to be more like family, and those friendships were made through rodeo,” states Mr. Elsworth. His advice to the parents and the contestants of THSRA about how to best enjoy their high school rodeo experience is to “volunteer your time and get to know the other families within the organization, you will meet many lifelong friends there. Remember that everyone who is there wants to win, so teach your kids to make the best of each of their
levels. Getting to know people in other regions tremendously helps too.” Region VIII did exceptionally well at the 2015 THSRA finals. Logan Weeks and his partner Greg Cordova placed 3rd in the first round of team roping, also Justin Medina and his partner Efrain Mendiola along with Tyler Gunter and his partner Tucker Smith made it to the short go in team roping. Our cutters, Brittany McKinney, Sissy Winn, and West Henderson, qualified for the short go along with Davette Stegman who placed 6th in the second round. Sissy Winn (light rifle), Will Pollock (saddle bronc), and West Henderson (cutting) will be moving on to compete at the national level in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Congratulations to all of our region VIII members who qualified for state and to those who excelled during that week in Abilene. We are sure you will make us proud and good luck in Wyoming Region VIII!! runs and be a great competitor in the arena and a friend outside of the arena.” Now, our region secretary, Mrs. Celina Fetty has been involved with Jr. High/ High School rodeo for five years. She is my aunt and I dragged her into the rodeo world when I decided to join TJHSRA my 7th grade year. She wanted to get involved as secretary for our region because she loves doing work with the organization and wanted to help in any way possible. “My favorite thing about high school rodeo would have to be the family involvement and the bonds that are made,” says Mrs. Fetty. She has helped so much to keep our region organized and running smoothly, and I know everyone is happy to have her in her position as secretary. Her advice to parents and contestants of THSRA is, “get involved and educated about the sport, the rules, and how the rodeo is run. Volunteer and make yourself visible at the region and state

s the 2014-2015 Region IX rodeo season comes to an end with state finals in the books, six outstanding contestants prepare for the long journey to Wyoming for NHSRA Nationals. A big congratulations goes to Texas State Champion Boudreaux Campbell and Tristan Mize, who will be representing Region IX at Nationals in Bull Riding. Colton Currie and Spur Luke will be competing in the Boys Cutting. Kayne

Partin was crowned the State Champion in Steer Wrestling and Pamela Henderson won Reserve State Champion in Pole Bending. There is no doubt Region IX will be well represented on the Texas Team at Nationals and that they will be tough competition for the other contestants from all over the nation. Region IX had a great group of contestants; along with the six going to Nationals, we also had 12 other strong competitors make it to the short go round in Abilene. Dustin Brewster, Colby Winfrey and Kyler Cole in Saddle Bronc; Dillon sPUr lUKe & COltOn CUrrie Baize and Dylan Chandler in Bareback; Jake Hughes and Kelsey Winfrey in Breakaway; Dustin Brewster in Steer Wresting; Hunter Hicks in Boys Cutting; Morgan Starns and Kaylee Campbell in Girls Cutting; Jessica Garrett in Goat Tying; Landri Brown in Barrel Racing; and Megan Wright qualified in both Goat Tying and Pole Bending. Senior, Megan Wright says, “This week was an awesome way to end my High School Rodeo Career! I’m so blessed with my horses and friends and family for the support.” Megan served as Vice President this rodeo season and really stepped up her game this year at State. She was one spot out of making it to Nationals in Goat Tying, but says “It’s pretty sad, but can’t complain that I’m the top of Texas.” Pamela Henderson, Reserve Champion who will be representing Team Texas at Nationals in Pole Bending was so happy to be able to compete at State. She says “I knew I was running against some of the best riders in Texas and that I

would have to earn my place, not be given it.” Pamela is a freshman this year and says, “It was such an amazing experience that I got to share with my family, which only made it better by all the people I had supporting and cheering me on at home. I know I couldn’t have done any of it if I didn’t have such a great horse, who gave me her all every time we came down the alley.” Our Texas State Champion Steer Wrestler, Kayne Partin, is a senior and felt extremely blessed. “I thank God for the opportunities he provided me to get where I am! A big thank you to my mom and dad for always pushing me to be my best! Thank you to John Schueneman for everything he’s done for me the past four years and to everyone else that helped me along the way! And especially everyone back home!! Thank you all!” Region IX showed what they were made of at State this year in Abilene. Each and every contestant should be proud of all they have accomplished to get to State and carry this through to Nationals. Thank you to everyone at THSRA who made the State Finals so amazing, because without you we wouldn’t be able to do what we love, the sport we call Rodeo! rom beginning to end of the 2015 State Finals Rodeo, Region X was all in! In the first round twelve of our very own were placing. In the calf roping, Cooper Mathews took first place while Chantz Webster took third and Luke Harper took fifth. Fourth place in the barrels went to Ava Anotolik, and fifth went to Kailey Toal. In the breakaway roping Lexi Russell made a beautiful run to put her in second place, and Jennifer Stanley ended up tenth. Brett and Tyler Willberg placed fifth in the team roping followed by Slade Townsend and McCray Profili placing sixth. In the bull riding, taking the sixth place spot was Pistol Preece. In the second round many competing for us capitalized on their leads resulting in getting thirteen of our contestants back to short round. In the calf roping, Chantz Webster, Luke Harper, and Cooper Mathews. Running barrels was Ava Anotolik and Kambria Mcdougal. In the Goat tying, Samantha Chick, and in the bull riding Pistol Preece.
Slade Townsend and McCray Profili along with Denton Halford and Kirby Blankenship in the team roping, and in the cutting was Chantz Webster and Mckenzie Byrd. Ten of those thirteen from Region X are now being sent to nationals to represent the state of the best of the best! Our very own Chantz Webster conquered all and is now the 2015 All-Around cowboy, along with being the champion calf roper. When asked what helped him to get through the week and accomplish such a thing Chantz replied, "Mainly my focus and concentration. I've been working hard on my mental game a lot and I stuck to my game plan all week

of just getting through each calf or run whether I drew good or not. Having a positive attitude and all the support from my close friends and family is a big part of the success I had all throughout the week. hile i am writing this i have just unpacked from abilene and washing and repacking for des moines for the Junior High Nationals. The Texas finals for Junior High and High School are in the books! As we know the weather did not cooperate with the junior high finals too much. there were many
inches of rain above Gonzales which caused the river to rise. With the help of the city of Gonzales, the trailers in harm’s way were moved to higher ground for the finals. One night we lost power during a storm, but luckily we escaped the extreme weather but it was a little scary. despite all the weather we incurred we were in Gonzales to have the finals and we did have a great finals and i believe we are set to go to the National finals. We will be headed to des moines, ia this next week in search of our 5th championship. it would be awesome to bring this trophy home one more year, i truly believe we have the team to do that. during the week of the finals the state Board of directors voted to continue coming to Gonzales for the next three years. the city of Gonzales is already planning for next year and is thrilled that the Junior High will be there for three more years. Well…..better get to packing…safe travels to everyone and hopefully next month we will be shouting from the rough tops our accomplishments! Go texas!!! anne dollery
