2016 THSRA State Finals Grand Entry Guidelines We will have morning & evening grand entries on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and also for the short go matinee on Saturday.

Each region has been assigned 2 performances, two a day so it is easy to remember. Monday and Tuesday morning grand entries we also need help with so those are divided up as well. Please have at least 5 members from your region to help carry flags. More than 5 would be nice. If there are not enough contestants for all of the flags, then they will be asked to carry a second flag. If you have a member that likes to carry sponsor flags, they are welcome to help at any performance.

Some understand it is a good way to get their horse in the arena before competition.

Contestants will be asked to hold the flag pole upright and make one lap around the edge of the arena at a slow lope so that the sponsor flag is displayed behind them while the announcer reads the script for their flag.

REGION ASSIGNMENTS FOR MONDAY & TUESDAY MORNING: Monday – Regions 6 through 10 Tuesday – Regions 1 through 5 REGION ASSIGNMENTS FOR MORNING & EVENING PERFORMANCES: Wednesday – Regions 3, 4 & 6 – Team Cinch members will be introduced that evening Thursday – Regions 1, 8 & 9 Friday – Regions 2, 5, 7 & 10 Saturday – All Regions MORNING PERFORMANCES: Line up at 8:45am in the back of the alley. Start at 9am.

EVENING PERFORMANCES: Line up at 6:30 pm in the back of the alley. Start at 6:45pm.

SATURDAY’S MATINEE GRAND ENTRY STARTS AT 2:45PM. All regions are asked to send contestants to help with this one.

n 1964, a 41-year-old rancher by the name of Marvin Priefert invented a cattle head-gate that was a complete turnaround from the standard style of the day. Marvin’s head-gate was the first of its kind to open from the sides instead of from the top and bottom, which had a side effect of choking cattle down. Confident in his design, he went on to patent his invention and over the course of the next several years, Marvin, along with help from his family, began building the business that would later become Priefert Manufacturing. Over the next several decades, Priefert introduced new products to its line-up, including hay and cattle equipment, panels, and gates. In 1992 Priefert saw its production move into the rodeo world with its introduction of its first roping chute, since then becoming the most widely used chute in the sport of roping, and a favorite among ropers themselves.

These are some of the things that myself and my fellow student officers

learned about on a recent visit to the Priefert Factory, an insanely massive facility that’s in a constant state of organized motion. It’s easy to underestimate its sheer size until you learn that the production facility is over 20 acres under roof, and still steadily growing. All of that space is put to good use, as Priefert continues to develop and produce top-of-the-line equipment that can stand both the test of time and the wear and tear of daily operation. One of the reasons for this is the process by which each product is made; Every single item begins its life as a raw steel “Master Coil” that weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of 55,000 pounds. From there each product is built, literally, from the ground up. Over the course of a few days it will pass through numerous stages of production, each one crucial to the integrity of the product itself. Durability, versatility, and quality are all staples of the brand that is “Built by ranchers, for ranchers,” and those virtues are synonymous with the products themselves. From the

first side-closing head-gate to the first line of powder-coated products, Priefert has made game changing and innovative moves within the livestock industry while never sacrificing the integrity or quality of its products.

This is due in large part, to the heart and soul of Priefert Manufacturing.

Marvin, and his brother, Corbin “Coke” Priefert, were the driving force behind the company in the 60’s and 70’s, while Marvin’s son Bill has done the same since Marvin’s passing in 1988. Family is at the very core of Priefert’s foundations, and it’s still evident even today, in its 3rd generation. Throughout the 90’s, Bill’s sons, Edward, William, and Travis, each worked for the company after school and during the summer, and eventually all of them began working full time at the company. In 2005 Edward was named company President, while William and Travis both went on to be named Vice Presidents. Throughout the years the spirit of family and tradition within Priefert Manufacturing has con-

tinued to play a major role in its growth and success. Even today it isn’t uncommon to see a member of the Priefert family walking around of the factory floor, maintaining the core values that began with Marvin in 1964.

Today Priefert manufacturing continues to grow at a rapid pace, most recently branching out into the hunting market with a line of wildlife handling equipment, and into the steel market with Priefert Steel Sales. Both divisions continue to grow with the rest of the company, and have served to diversify and expand. Through the years many changes have come for Priefert Manufacturing, but a few key things have remained the same. Tradition, family, hard work, and a willingness to step outside the box have allowed the company to prosper and thrive, while also earning a reputation for its quality and reliability. Priefert is a one-of-a-kind company, with an even brighter future on the horizon.

LAINE LAFOUNTAIN OF REGION X

The Whataburger Whatakid is selected due to their ability to excel both in and out of the rodeo arena. Whataburger is proud to recognize a THSRA member from each of the ten Regions who truly upholds the title “Whatakid!” One of the nominees will be chosen at the State Final Rodeo in June as the Whatakid of the Year. In recognition of this accomplishment they will receive free Whataburgers for an entire year!

ongratulations to this month’s Whatakid, Laine LaFountain! The region 10 member resides in Alvarado, Texas and is currently a sophomore at Alvarado High School. He has been a member of the Texas High School Rodeo Association for three years now, and he competes in the tie-down roping and team roping.

He said he loves everything about the THSRA, and he has learned the importance of patience, having a positive attitude, and he has gained a willingness to help out when he can since becoming a member.

In addition to the THSRA, Laine is a member of several rodeo and roping organizations where he has experienced a number of wins. In order to be successful, Laine said he dedicates most of his time to his horses and has sacrificed school sports as well as time with his friends that do not rodeo. One thing he has not sacrificed, however, is his academic success. Laine is an A and B honor roll student and has been his entire high school career.

While he does not participate in extracurricular activities through his school, Laine said he volunteers for event help or arena help at each association that he is involved in. “I hope that kind of leadership, attitude and hard work will help me in the professional rodeo world some day,” he said. “I try and keep a positive attitude towards everything I do and I am harder on myself than anyone else could ever be; I don’t like to lose.”

While a good work ethic is vital for success in and out of the rodeo arena, a strong support system holds quite a bit of importance as well. Laine explained how his role models are his parents and anyone who is willing to help him in and out of the arena because without them “I would not be able to compete in the sport that I love,” Laine said. “I truly could not have done all of this without my parents supporting me and encouraging me to be the best that I can be.”

In addition to a strong support system, Laine has a competitive team of equine athletes. Black and Reno, Laine’s team roping horses, and Butter, his tie-down roping horse, make up his equine team and aid him in the success he sees in the rodeo arena.

He said he is thankful for Whataburger’s sponsorship of the THSRA and that he is honored to be selected as the Whatakid of the month. “I appreciate to folks that nominated me, and I will do all that I can to make them proud,” he said.

Laine said he plans to attend college, but he is still exploring ideas for what to major in. Until then, he said “I am looking forward to the new season at Region X, and I can’t wait to see what it holds for me. Let’s Rodeo!”

T

he year of rodeos has come to an end here in Region II and ten contestants in each event have qualified for the 2016 Texas High School Rodeo Association State Finals. These contestants are preparing for the toilsome week of rodeo taking place June 3 -11. These talented athletes will have to be maximally prepared, motivated, and determined in order to have a successful week in Abilene, Texas.

THSRA contestants work hard all year to qualify for the THSRA State Finals in June. Contestants who qualify will compete in two rounds. At that point, those who are in the top fifteen will go on to compete in a short go. After the short go, the contestants who finished in the top four positions will continue on to compete at the national level. These contestants will be competing for money, prizes, and prestigious titles. To be successful at this high level of competition takes large amounts of preparation, motivation, and determination. Region II kids are no strangers to this kind of hard work. With many state and national champions, Region II knows how to compete at a high level of dif-

ficulty.

One Region II contestant who is headed to Abilene in June and who knows the rigors of success is junior Delani Wood. Wood qualified for state in four events: barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, and the girls’ cutting competition. Wood is preparing for state finals by hauling to as many rodeos as possible and getting in as much practice as possible. When asked what was something she could not do without in her preparation process she said, “My support group. Without my family and friends, I would not be able to be where I am today.” Wood is a great competitor who we look forward to watching at state.

There are many different methods of preparation when it comes to big rodeos like state. Some like to increase their amount of practice time, some like to handle it just like any other rodeo, and there are many other techniques used. One Region II contestant who likes to handle it just like any other rodeo is Allison Baize. Baize qualified to state in the barrel racing. Baize said that her preparation for state does not differ from any other rodeo. She likes to keep her horse legged up, slow work him, and make sure he isn’t sore. One thing Baize says she could not do without in her preparation is the supplements she feeds her horse because they are a vital part of its performance. No matter your method you prefer, the work you put in before a big competition will ultimately determine your success.

The athletes competing at Abilene in June will most definitely have the preparation, motivation, and determination that it takes to come out on top of such a tough group of competitors, including the members of Region II. The Senior Ride

he rodeo season is drawing to a close, and for our graduating seniors, this was their last season with region three. Their time in the region has taught them lessons they will carry with them, and memories they can recall with a grin. There’s been laughs, just as there have been tears. Round wins and no-times, late nights and early mornings. Weekends where you couldn’t put enough layers on, and weekends where you couldn’t take enough off. Out of all those changes, there is a constant to the large equation that is our region rodeo; the people.

It was on every one of those hot or cold, winning or losing weekends that no matter what, we came out smiling. It was the people, the friends who make these weekends so uncomparatively special.

Sy Felton has been molded by the regions, they have taught him patience and that if you want something, it truly takes blood sweat and tears to earn it. On those days you learn that only one-hundred percent will be acceptable. One hundred percent of dedication, time and energy. Most importantly though, one hundred percent enjoyment. Sometimes under the strain of the

competition, the haze of adrenaline and the exhaustion of practice it’s easy to forget why we are in the arena. Because God gave us the freedoms of being able to enjoy and come together for something we love. To all you athletes who strive so hard for greatness; never forget to remember the joys of the sport and why you do what you do.

Brooke Jordan, another graduating senior from our region has stated that, “Region rodeos have been a blessing to do. Regions have taught me to be responsible and always show up on time.” I’m sure there’s a good reason and a good story that comes with the showing up on time part, however, she also mentioned that she, “Will be attending Hill College on a full ride and plans to major in agriculture.” To all of the seniors reading this article, not only should you remember to have fun, but to never give up on your dreams. You may hear that on a near daily basis, but if you have taken the time to perfect your pole run or staying in the middle of your bronc, or roping anything with hair, then you can achieve exactly what you set your mind to. Don’t ever let anybody tell you that you cannot go to the college you want to go to. If you wish to attend Stanford and become an engineer, you have to put in Stanford worthy work.

Lariat Larner, yet another one of our Regions graduating seniors has learned an extremely important lesson, “Everyone has bad days, learn from it and move on.” This lesson ties somewhat into the point made above, nothing is going to come easy. There are days when it seems like Stanford quality work isn’t even enough. There might even be week’s maybe months where the sun doesn’t seem to shine. Those times are when a short memory and a smile are the most important thing you can have. Going out into the world isn’t going to be easy, but keeping life enjoyable, never giving up and knowing the bad days are always limited is a leap towards success.

Wynn Todd, new to the regions for her senior year has summed it up very well, “Participating in region three has given me more confidence in myself as a roper and has encouraged me to work hard to meet my goals. With this being my first and my last year competing in regions, I’ll miss all of the friendships I have made with my fellow contestants, the help and kindness from the parents and board members that make region three happen, the scholarships given away by the board of directors of region three will help us begin our new educational journey.” The big thing I want the graduating seniors to pull away from this is the confidence within yourself. You have the power and the work ethics to achieve every one of your goals. Never give up, never forget to smile, and always know you can.

What it's Meant to Me

A

bout two and a half years ago, I picked up a newspaper and turned to a section called the Extreme Team News.

As I read through the articles, I came upon one that was simply titled "Reasons to Become an Ariat Reporter." It listed things such as "You'll meet lots of different people in your region," and "You'll get a lot of phone numbers," and of course, "You'll be rewarded a scholarship." Upon finishing it, I decided that I was going to sign myself up to be an Ariat Reporter, and by some stroke of luck, I was chosen.

What that article didn’t tell me, was how much I would come to truly care about that title, and this responsibility. It didn’t tell me that I would get to look inside the lives of the people I interviewed. It didn’t tell me that I would come to love writing so much that I would

decide to pursue it further in college. It didn't say that my mom would proofread nearly every single article before I submitted it, or that my dad would help me with titles and give me suggestions on what I could do to make my wording easier to read. It didn't talk about the late nights I would spend on my computer, trying to find the right words to type. It never said anything about how many people would come up to me and say, "I loved that article you wrote last month!" or how great it would make me feel. It didn’t' tell me how much I would learn about diligence, honesty, patience, and a positive mindset. And perhaps most importantly, it left out the great appreciation that I would come to have for the friends and family who have supported me and helped me every step of the way. They made my job infinitely easier, and for that I'm forever thankful.

So, for anyone else that might be thinking to themselves "I'd like to do that," but doesn't know what the job entails; here is what it's been for me.

It's a lot of work, and by no means is it always easy, but it's rewarding in a way that I, ironically, cannot put into words.

I know that there are a few others like myself who will be handing this position down to a new reporter this year, and I can only hope that they will come to love this job as much as I feel we all have. My goal has always been to tell stories that inspire people, and if I've ever accomplished that, then I'm happy.

ots of times in our lives we hear people say I wish I would have done that, or I wish I had tried that, I wish I wish. This time in our lives is the time to stop wishing and start making a commitment to make it happen. Most of region V seniors are heading to college in hopes of preparing for their futures, so what better time than now to seize the moment, make the grades, make time to practice, and make an effort to be THE BEST you can be. With new independence, college life can make you or break you… no curfews, or no parents looking over your shoulder reminding you to get your work done, it all falls on you. As athletes and competitors, I think we all have the grit and determination to show everyone we can get it done and reach our goals. As freshmen, we come in wide eyed and wanting to prove ourselves but sometimes fall short of our goals because we simply lack the experience. As seniors with so much going on in our lives, like prom, final exams, college entrance testing, dating, and driving, we sometimes don’t reach our potential because we spread ourselves too thin and have so many other interests. There is time for it all,

WHAT CAN RODEO DO FOR YOU?

ell Region 6, our 20152016 season has come to an end. Our seniors are going off to college and rookies

come in to take their place. Summer rodeos and clinics are back, and a new season begins! But take time to reflect on this past season. What did high school rodeo do for you? What will it continue to do to make you a better person?

First of all, it clearly sets you up for college success. High school rodeo is an extremely competitive sport, whether you are in junior or senior high. It gives you that edge to be ready for the nation-wide competition that you must face at college rodeos. With that being said, high school rodeo helps you achieve your dreams. If you set out to continue

having a career in the rodeo atmosphere, this is your niche!

Now if you don’t aspire to go pro in rodeo, high school rodeo’s benefits can suit your needs as well. It helps you become a more responsible individual, and be on time. You are required to care for a 1200-pound animal and thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment, so you better stay on top of it! As for being on time, we are all familiar with the 3-call rule. If your name is called three times and you don’t arrive to compete, you get a no time. Last, but not least, rodeo helps you become more perseverant. This thrilling sport pushes you to rise to the occasion, and be the best of the best.

No matter what you choose to do in life, high school rodeo can do nothing but better you as a person. It keeps you busy and out of trouble, and it gives you something to look forward to. Rodeo provides you with purpose, and allows you to see the bright side of life.

bilene, Texas, is the home of the Texas High School Rodeo Finals, and in my opinion, is the best of the best high school students competing for a spot on the national team.

We’ve all had dreams of Rock Springs, Wyoming, but for some it can't work out For some, this week brings tears of joy and for others it's disappointment for everyone. For those who leave the finals empty handed you might think you're going home just a loser, but that's not true. The Texas High School State Finals is the toughest finals to qualify for so making it this far is a huge accomplishment.

When you get to Abilene you have great experiences winning whether it is you or a fellow person from your region. Something that makes these finals special isn’t winning or individuals and their events, but its about Regions coming together to support one another. Each region is just like a team that takes more than just one person to become a State or even National Champion. When you leave you take away great expe-

riences, meet new people, and make new friends from different regions.

You can't get that anywhere else.

You learn to be a team player and to support your competition. These are the little life lessons that make it all worth it and all this comes from a week of memories at THSRA finals.

Region VII went out with a bang this year at the Texas High School Rodeo Finals. We are sending the toughest cowgirls and cowboys from Texas to nationals this year and 13 of those happen to be from the Magnificent PADEN HURTS AND AUSTIN ATKINSON Region VII. This year at state region VII proved that we are the best inside and outside of the arena.

If you couldn't make it to the Dodge Truck Push or the Ariat Olympics you missed out. We started off our tremendous week by winning the Ariat Olympics and the Truck Push, those two wins just motivated us for a few more. In poles.

Bayli Sabin will represent us at Nationals, in breakaway Bailey Reina, Coleman Franz in Steer Wrestling, Haley Allison and Madison Rucker in Girls Cutting, Tanner Green and Coleby Payne in Team Roping,and Lane

Region VII is going to be represented greatly in Rock Springs.

Region VII is also home to 4 awesome shooters. Morgan Meyers our State Champion light rifle, Madison Meyers Reserve State Champion, in Trap Shooting Dylan Schroeder and State Champion Easton Power will all be representing Region VII and Texas great at nationals.

Dont forget to remember that all this couldn't happen without the support of our parents, grandparents, sponsors, and friends. Without all those people High School Rodeo would not be possible. At the end of this exciting, fun filled week we need to remember who helped us get there and say thank you. There is no doubt we had an amazing State Finals in Abilene.

Region VII is truly made of champions.

Attitude is Everything

n any competition, whether it is between 2 people or 700 people, there will always be a winner but there will also be those that don’t win. Some people take it really hard when they lose, but learning how to lose with grace isn’t easy. Learning to keep your composure and not lose your cool is something only true athletes have accomplished. Everyone works hard, everyone wants to win, but that’s not always how the cards fall, but learning to be okay with whatever the outcome is a crucial part of being a true athlete. The key to getting over a loss is to take some time to yourself and just cool off. Sit alone and be angry and upset, but don't let anyone else see you. People are always watching you, whether you realize it or not. College scouts and sponsors don't only look at your winnings and how you perform in the arena, but also how you handle a loss and how you act towards your competitors.

In order to be a good sport you have to always be polite, no trash talk and no dirty looks, or hoping that someone else does badly. You have to have a good mindset and hope that

everyone, including you, compete to the best of their ability. If you know that all of your competitors did the best that they could, it will make winning that much better. Don't try to show off or boast after a big win, stay humble and appreciative. Most of all, always support your opponents. Cheer them on, wish them luck, lend a helping hand when they are in need, and help them to keep their chin up if they didn’t do well.

Not knowing how to get over a bad run not only affects your mood for the rest of the day, but can also affect your next one. Speaking from personal experience, I found it’s inevitable to be upset for a few minutes, but reflect on what you might have done wrong or what you should have done better, then let it go, start over and mentally prepare yourself for your next run. The sooner you learn to just laugh it off, the more fun the sport becomes. Sure, winning is fun, but if I’ve learned anything from rodeo it’s that winning isn't everything. Once you become a good sport, have fun, and just do the best you can do, the 1st place checks and gold buckles will come. No one is perfect. Even rodeos most famous and accomplished athletes miss their steer/calf, hit a barrel, or buck off. Winning every rodeo you enter isn't the only way to make a name for yourself. Just remember, one bad run is not the end of the world, there will be other rodeos down the road and throughout your lifetime. Remember you get what you put in.

PERFORMANCE REPORT A Week To Look Forward To

he time has come for State Finals. Although many of us are nervous, we can’t help to be excited. This is such a great accomplishment and definitely one

of the most memorable experiences in anyone’s rodeo career. You are surrounded by all of your friends, no matter if they are from your home town or across the great state of Texas. There is always something to do and of course you get to compete against the toughest competition in the high school rodeo circuit. Texas is the biggest and the baddest state in the United States and the same goes for the sport of rodeo.

Here at Region 9 we have a long list of tough competitors traveling to Abilene in June. We have state short-go qualifiers and even national qualifiers. We also have some freshman who will be making their first runs at the high school state finals. Taking a look at a John Michael Elliot, a freshman competing in calf roping and team roping, he tells of his plans and excitement

for the week of finals. He said, “I’m really excited for state! I plan to remember what a mentor told me, ‘Don’t act like it’s your first time in the end zone,’ in order to be confident and stay focused on one run at a tie to qualify for nationals. I am also looking forward to having fun with friends, especially at the dance.”

There is a lot that goes into preparing for the state finals. You have to get the trailer ready, get all your clothes ready, make sure you get all of your feed and water supplies, get your horses legged up and shod, making sure they are in tip top shape, and you have to mentally prepare yourself for the long week ahead. Carly Staggs a sophomore from Teague that will be competing in barrel racing, breakaway, goat tying, and pole bending, has a lot to get ready. With four events that means even more preparation

and practice. Talking to Carly she said, “I am very excited about the upcoming week at state. I am hoping and praying that I have good runs that will take me to nationals.” Like Carly all of us are hoping to make it to nationals because that is the ultimate goal at state. Although very tough, it is possible if you have the right mindset and drive.

Along with the freshman we also have some upperclassman that are taking their first trip to Abilene. Jared Strawser a junior competing in bareback riding said, “I’m very excited because this is my first year in high school rodeo and I’m going to state. That was my goal at the start and I accomplished it. I’m pretty excited about going and getting on some buckskin horses. I hope to make it to the short go, and not let anything else get on my mind so I can do my best.”

For some of our Region 9 family, it will be their last trip to Abilene. This is true for senior Landri Brown, who will be competing in barrel racing at state and is going to Southwestern University to play college volleyball after high school. She said, “I just want to stay safe at state. I want to make the best runs I can and let the chips fall where they may. I’m excited for state and it’s bittersweet. I’m sad it’s coming to an end, but I’m ready for the next chapter in my life.”

Region X Dominates

odeo is a sport that I believe helps to unite all the diverse athletes competing in the arena in a numerous amount of ways. What can so often be so rewarding to the sport is the participation and representation from the athletes in the wide variety of rodeo associations. In these few months leading up to the state finals that we have had free of region rode-

os, the region X athletes have gone to dominate elsewhere!

In the 2016 Central Texas Youth Rodeo Association almost every event title was won by a region X Member in their age group. In the 16-19 age group, the year end all around cowgirl was KinleyAnn Urbanovsky who also won the breakaway while Tanner Fleet was this years all around cowboy. The team roping champions were Wyatt Inderman and Matthew George. In the pole bending Heidi Sieperda won the year end, and Hadley Butler took the goat tying year end win. For the 13-15 age group, Catherine Clayton won the all around cowgirl, the goat tying and breakaway. Clayton Downing won the all around cowboy title, the Tie-down, year end team roping header, reserve champion heeler, champion ribbon roper, as well as won the boys breakaway. Colton Dowell won the year end for the team roping heeler, reserve champion header, and won the champion chute dogging title.

In other events and associations, back in May Cheyenne Greer won the match horse races in Abilene, Texas. Tatum Nelson went on to win the year end open barrel racing champion and third in the youth division at the Barrel Racing Association of Texas. At the Vernon West Memorial Roping, Cooper Mathews won the first round, won second in the second round, and then

wrapped up the average win, while region X's Luke Harper won third in average and fast time in the short round. Luke also recently won both the rounds in the calf roping at one of the American Junior Rodeo Association. Kirby Blankenship has come to collect at just about everywhere he has gone lately! Heeling, he won the fast time in the open at the Llano Crawfish roping and split first and second in the average in the 15. At the San Antonio USTRC, Kirby won the incentive and the fast time in the open. Then, in Hamilton at the WSTR he won the Heartland 15 and qualifier 15 to go on a couple weeks later and win the incentive in the open at the Stephenville USTRC! We would like to congratulate all of these athletes for their success and say we are proud to have some of the best competitors across the state of Texas within our region!

I'm confident to say Region X is coming into to state well prepared and ready to continue this streak of domination.

I'm proud to be apart of what I believe is the best region, and am saddened to have to officially say my goodbyes. In our monthly Farm & Ranch Family Spotlight, we’ll feature one family, sharing their story of how they work together as a family to make their farm or ranch successful.The spotlight will run for 10 months; each month will feature a different Region. ongratulations to this month’s McCoy’s Farm and Ranch Family, the Downings!

The region 10 family resides in Troy, Texas where they own and operate Downing Livestock. The operation is definitely a family affair as Jon and Carla, along with their kids, Trinton, Clayton and Raley, work on the ranch every day.

Jon started the cow/calf operation in the late 80s after he bought the operation from a man who had previously bought the business from Jon’s grandfather and dad. He has grown the business into what it is today and created a stocker operation where they run calves on oat fields, all with the help of his family.

“It’s all family oriented and we are all together,” Jon said. “It makes everybody feel like they are important, and they are, we are all working toward a goal.”

Jon also explained how it is extremely important for everyone to communicate and accomplish their task at hand effectively and in a timely manner.

In order to keep the family business successful, he said it takes a whole lot of cooperation and communication. “Everybody has to do what they are supposed to do,” Jon said. While the entire family helps out and has a number of responsibilities, Jon explained how Clayton, carries a large load of work.

Clayton is a sophomore in high school, and he is currently homeschooled.

He generally starts his day at 5:30 every morning and checks cattle. Depending on what season it is, he tends to either weaning calves, preconditioning calves after weaning or checks on cattle that are turned out in the oat field.

Raley is the youngest Downing and is currently an

8th grader. She does a little bit of everything including penning cattle, giving shots and “she’s a really good tractor hand,” Jon said. Trinton, the oldest Downing, is a sophomore at Weatherford College and is a member of the rodeo team. He helps on the ranch whenever he is not at school or rodeoing. And, I think Jon would agree to the saying, “Behind every successful rancher, is a great woman,” as he explained how Carla does anything and everything wherever she is needed. From hauling kids to rodeos, and helping them in the practice pen to checking cattle early in the morning.

Each of the kids participate in rodeo, and either were, are, or will be members of the Texas High School Rodeo Association. Trinton participated in the calf roping at region 10, Clayton currently participates in the calf roping and team roping, and Raley will be competing on the high school level next year in the barrel racing and pole bending. Jon said he and his family love the ranching and rodeo lifestyle because it allows his kids to gain positive character traits such as responsibility, respect for everybody and honesty.

“The kids learn a lot and have lots of responsibility,” Jon said. “They meet a lot of people, old and young, learn how to deal with competition and learn the true meaning of hard work.”

The Downing’s said they are honored to be chosen as this months McCoy’s Farm and Ranch Family of the Month, and they are thankful for McCoy’s partnership with the THSRA.

TEXAS JUNIOR HIGH RODEO ASSOCIATION NEWS REGION IX: A GREAT SEASON!

egion IX had a great rodeo season and many contestants are looking forward to the state competition in May. Our region ended the year with our finals at the Leon County Expo Center in Buffalo, Texas. After the final rodeo, many buckles, saddles, and tack prizes were distributed to well deserving cowboys and cowgirls. We would like to thank all of our sponsors for making this possible.

The All Around Cowboy was Tyler Bell and All Around Cowgirl was Cheyenne Gubert. Both of them are 8th graders who are looking forward to high school rodeo next year. To prepare for state, Tyler is roping the dummy daily and practicing in the arena as much as possible. Tyler said he is honored to win the All Around because it took a lot of hard work and dedication to get him to this point. Tyler also was recognized for selling the most Bloomer tickets and

received a cash award for his sales. Cheyenne has to find time to practice between club sports and school sports. She said that whenever she finds time to ride she immediately takes it. Sometimes she rides with her grandma up to 5 hours so she can spend time with her horses. Cheyenne is so excited to accomplish a goal that she set for herself three years ago. She is so excited to win such a big honor.

The Rookie of the Year Cowgirl was Haley Mason from Anderson, Texas. Haley participated in goat tying, ribbon running and breakaway roping. She is practicing and going to roping events to make sure she is ready for state. Haley said she was thankful and blessed that she was able to win this award. The Rookie of the Year Cowboy was Luke McDuffle from Midway, Texas. Both are 6th grade competitors who were new to Region IX Junior High rodeo. Luke participated in bareback riding, ribbon roping, team roping, breakaway roping and goat tying. Luke has been practicing and attending youth rodeos to make sure he is well prepared for state.

All the Region IX contestants are ready for a great rodeo at State. We would like to wish everyone the best of luck. Remember that the sport of rodeo allows us to win and learn a lot of memorable life lessons. Do your best and have a great time doing it!

egion 10 JH had some serious competition going on in the boys' all around race this season. In the end Kutter Kortis prevailed & won a super nice saddle for the all around along with two event winner saddles. Kutter won 1st in the chute dogging, 1st in calf roping, 2nd in boys goat tying, 4th in team roping & 6th in ribbon roping. Carson Sunvison ended up the reserve all around boy.

In the girls race, Jordi Edens clenched the all around. She won an awesome all around saddle & three event champion saddles. She

won 1st in barrels, girls breakaway & goat tying, 2nd in poles & ribbon running & 5th in team roping. The reserve all around girl was Saige Sealy, who was also Jordi's team roping partner.

On another subject, Region 10 would like to ask for prayers for the sibling of region 10 contestant Dakota Cassidy & her entire family. Her little sister Darcy has been fighting cancer for years & they could really use our prayers right now!! She is a super sweet little girl that lights up anyone's life that she encounters!

SPREADING THE WORD ABOUT TJHRA TJHRA is a great organization from the Region level all the way to the state finals! Serving as the top level of competition for grades 6-8, TJHRA is the association to join for athletes who love their sport and value good competition.

Help us spread the word to more families about this great association! When you are at other events, make sure parents know that this is an option for their child and tell them a little more about TJHRA. Created in 2004, the NHSRA Junior High Division was established to bring the excitement of the sport to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders and to serve as a feeder system into the high school ranks of the Association. Today, all 47 states and provinces that belong to the NHSRA also produce a Junior High Division as well, with over 2,500 members in total now competing. Junior High Division students compete in a variety of events, including Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Goat Tying, Breakaway

Roping, Tie-Down Roping, Chute Dogging, Team Roping, Ribbon Roping, Bareback Steer Riding, Saddle Bronc Steer Riding and Junior Bull Riding.

Each summer, the "best of the best" from each state and province qualify for the National Junior High Finals Rodeo. Approximately 900 competitors show off their talents in the event and compete for thousands of dollars in scholarships and prizes. Since the first Junior High Finals was held in 2005, Gallup, New Mexico has served as the host site.
