ith hundreds of our families getting ready to pack up their horse trailers and head to Gonzales this month, we thought that you would like to know local events going on and where to shop and eat while visiting this beautiful and historical part of Texas. With a whole week to explore the area here is a great look at local businesses that would love for you to visit them while you are in town. Don't be afraid to venture out of Gonzales and visit the charming towns of Shiner and Yoakum because they all have great things to experience too!

onzales is one of the earliest Anglo-American settlements in Texas, the first west of the Colorado River. It was established by Empresario Green DeWitt as the capital of his colony in August 1825. DeWitt named the community for Rafael Gonzáles, governor of Coahuila y Tejas. The 49 original blocks and seven public squares laid out in the shape of a Greek cross withstood the test of time and form the first Texas History Museum District. Gonzales is most famous because it was the site of the first skirmish of the Texas Revolution. In 1831, the Mexican government gave the settlers a small cannon for protection against Indian attacks. At the outbreak of settler hostilities, a contingent of Mexican soldiers was sent from San Antonio to retrieve the cannon. On 2 October 1835, Texians under the command of John H. Moore confronted them. The Texans had fashioned a flag with the words “Come and take it”. The Texans successfully resisted the federal troops in what became known as the Battle of Gonzales. Gonzales later contributed thirty-two men from the Gonzales Ranging Company to the ill-fated defense of the Alamo. It was to Gonzales that Susanna Dickinson, widow of one of the Alamo defenders, and Joe, the slave of William B. Travis, fled with news of the Alamo massacre. General Sam Houston was here organizing the Texas army and anticipated the town would be the next target of General Antonio López de Santa Anna and the Mexican army. He had the town burned and ordered a retreat, thus precipitating the Runaway Scrape. If you go visit the Gonzales Memorial Museum which serves a memorial to these 32 men you will see actual artifacts from this period in time. The real Come and Take It cannon is located in the museum to see up close and you can even touch it! Beautiful building full of Texas history and well worth a visit. Some of the historical sites you may want to visit are the Old Jail Museum which is a hidden

6

treat. Located across from the fire station, the old Jailhouse staff will take you on a free personal tour of the first and second floors and allow you inside the jail cells. The walls have graffiti from former prisonsers. There is a gallows like the original that was in there on the second floor. Worth a visit and free! There is a driving tour with signs located around the town. The tour goes in a loop and you can enter at any point so you will not miss any of the historical focus points of the town. The tour is free and you can download an app from Itunes with narration. It is called TOUR GONZALES. There are many historical homes and buildings that have been beautifully maintained and will take you back in time. This year the JB Wells facility has added a convention expo center where approximately 60 booths will be located. These booths will include boutique style shopping and agriculture and equine products. There is something for everyone so don’t miss out. The expo center is air conditioned so it will be a popular hangout in between performances.

PERFORMANCE REPORT

SAFE TRAVELS By Jadyn Duggan

A

– Performance Reporter

s we mark off the days till summer, we also mark down rodeo after rodeo. Most of us will kick our summer off with the Texas High School Rodeo Finals, the best of the best will follow it up with the National High School Rodeo Finals and then we all will spend the rest of the summer traveling from jackpot to jackpot or clinic to clinic. As we gear our horses up for these events we also need to make sure we are preparing our trailers properly for safe travels. Trailer safety has always been a

major factor when traveling to rodeos, but it also one that we seem to overlook quite a bit. When we think of trailer safety we mainly just think about weather or not our lights work, if all the doors and latches are locked and shut and if the tires are in good condition. However, trailer safety is much more than that. Cell phones play a major part in our travels. We always hear “Don’t text and drive” and while we may not be on our phones behind the wheel, there are hundreds of other people going down the same road as us that could be on their phones. Being aware of others on the road and staying off our phones is one of many steps in having safe travels this summer. Another step is making sure all windows, doors and gates are shut. Before traveling we usually shut the doors inside the living quarters, and we usually always shut the extra dividers in the back of the trailer. However, a lot of people will leave their windows open to allow more air flow to the horses. Leaving these windows open can actually cause more harm than good. Most horses will stick their heads out of the windows leaving them open to get hit by flying debris or another vehicle driving to close. Another, more scarier problem that could occur is a wreck. We have all seen pictures from wrecks where the truck and trailer have rolled or been flipped and the horse is hanging outside the window. As awful as it sounds, it could happen to anyone. That is why it is extremely important to leave all windows shut when traveling down the road. While there are many things to take into consideration when it comes to trailer safety these are two of the most important ones to remember as we begin to travel this summer. Staying alert of others on the road, off our phones and keeping all doors, gates and windows shut along with the many other, more common safety rules will ensure we all have safe travels these busy months to come.

PERFORMANCE REPORT

Junior High Spotlight

R

By MADALYN RICHARDS – Performance Reporter

egion 2 Junior High wrapped up their 2019 rodeo season in Sweetwater, TX on April 5th and 6th. Region 2 had a great year and all of the contestants are looking forward to state. THE REGION 2 YEAR-END EVENT WINNERS INCLUDE: Cayden Mcfadden- Tiedown Dax Reed & Brogan Rankin- Team Roping Ryder Gass- Saddle Bronc Kelby Frizzel & Emilee Charlesworth- Ribbon Roping Emilee Charlesworth- Pole Bending Jessi Everett- Girls Goat Tying Lucy Richards- Girls Breakaway Cade Wallis- Chute Dogging Hagen Braswell- Bull Riding Brogan Rankin- Boys Goat Tying Kelby Frizzel- Boys Breakaway Macye Maben- Barrel Racing Dax Reed- Boys All-Around Macye Maben- Girls All-Around I had the chance to talk to Macye Maben, the 2019 Region 2 All-Around Cowgirl, about her recent wins and what it took to achieve them. As a 7th grader, Macye competes in barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, break-

away roping, ribbon roping, and team roping. She qualified for the state finals in all 6 events. Her favorite event is breakaway roping where she competes on her horse, “PJ”. Macye not only competes in rodeo, but she also plays basketball and runs cross country and track. When I asked Macye what sport she enjoyed the most, her answer was, “Basketball! This fall I even chose to miss a few breakaway ropings in order to avoid missing my basketball games. I am very fortunate to have five amazing horses that do not require a lot of training. They allow me to spend plenty of time in the gym or on the track.” To add to this, Macye’s mom, Kelly, said, “Macye wants to do it all, and not only does she want to do it all, but she wants to win it all. This means that there are a lot of late night practice sessions either in the gym, track, or arena.” Macye loves spending time with her horses and friends, so she can’t wait for the TJHRA State Finals. The 2019 Region 2 All-Around cowboy, Dax Reed, also visited with me. He is a 7th grader from Clint, TX and competes in Bull Riding, Team Roping, Breakaway, Ribbon Roping, and Goat Tying. He qualified for state in all of his events. Dax’s favorite events are calf roping and bull riding. He plays basketball for Jesus Chapel School, loves to hunt and fish, and is on the A honor roll. When I asked Dax to tell me an interesting fact about himself, he said, DAX REED “I wear my great grandmother’s hat. My grandma found the hat, brand new and unshaped, in my great grandmother’s house. My Grandma brought the hat home to me, knowing that I would like it.” His great grandmother is 97 years old and still comes to the practice pen to watch Dax and his brother, Lane, rope everyday. The hat was given to Dax’s great grandmother as a MAYCE MABEN Christmas present by his great grandfather about 35 years ago. Dax was a 2018 national qualifier in the bull riding and he is hoping for another national qualification this year.

PERFORMANCE REPORT Making The Trip to

Abilene, Texas

I

By KYLEE SCRIBNER

– Performance Reporter

t is becoming that time of year again. The time where the summer rodeo runs begin, the flood of high school rodeo athletes overtake Abilene, Texas, and the memories that last a lifetime will be forever branded on our hearts. It is that time of year where everyone pushes a little harder, and the weather seems to be a little hotter. It is that time of year again that the state finalist head to Abilene in efforts to make it into the top four to compete at nationals. Every region in Texas is bringing the top ten competitors in each event to compete in the rigorous state finals. These competitors have fought all year long to place their names on this very draw sheet, and you can expect nothing but their very best performance at the finals. With ten various regions competing at the Texas High School State Rodeo Finals, Region III is going in with a plan to execute. Region III’s competition this season was a phenom of talent. This region had more contestants than ever before, and is sending more individuals to state than any year previous. With the competition as strong as it was in Region III alone, it is safe to say that the other regions will

also be ready to compete. Each competitor has worked their way into this position, and it is evident that they will not go down without a fight. Region III just wanted to take the time to say a quick congratulations and good luck to each and every competitor in the region circuit. We are ecstatic and can not wait to see our members compete at the state finals! We firmly believe that our region will take over the leader boards this year, and we want you all to know that whether you made state or not that we are proud of each and everyone of you for your hard work, dedication, and your faith in God. "Champions do not become champions when they win the event, but in the hours, weeks, months and years they spend preparing for it. The victorious performance itself is merely the demonstration of their championship character." - T Alan Armstrong- We know that each of you are prepared for the competition that Abilene will throw at you, and we want you to know that no matter the outcome Red Hot Region III will always be here to support you!

MADISON OUTHIER OF REGION VII by Catelyn Felts

A

The Whataburger Whatakid is selected due to their ability to excel both in and out of the rodeo arena. Whataburger is proud to recognize a THSRA member from each of the ten Regions who truly upholds the title “Whatakid!” One of the nominees will be chosen at the State Final Rodeo in June as the Whatakid of the Year. In recognition of this accomplishment they will receive free Whataburgers for an entire year!

mbitious, humble, entrepreneurial, athletic, driven; these are only a handful of words that could be used to describe this month’s Whatakid, Madison Outhier. The Utopia, Texas native, and Fulshear High School sophomore currently competes in THSRA Region 7. She is an all-around contestant, competing in the barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, cutting and breakaway roping. She never mentioned having a favorite event, but it would be easy to assume breakaway roping takes the top spot given her successes this past year. Madison said “2017 was my best roping year,” and she hasn’t taken her foot off the gas since. She has won Cody Ohl’s 15 & under and 19 & under Breakaway ropings, Joe Beaver’s 15 & under Breakaway Roping, Roy Cooper’s Junior NFR 15 & under Breakaway Roping and she kicked off 2019 by claiming the first ever RFDTVs American Breakaway Roping championship title, along with RFDTV’s Junior American Breakaway championship. THSRA is chock full of students who are constantly working toward and achieving goals, and Madison is a prime example. “I am always working toward something and trying to accomplish goals,” Madison said. “I have a deeper appreciation for things. When I work so hard for something, my achievements are so much sweeter. I think that’s what sets us apart. We work so hard for what we do.” Madison had set her sights on the American ever since the news came out about the inclusion of breakaway roping. “I was so excited; I was over the moon,” Madison said. “My first goal was to qualify.” By the time the semifinals rolled around in Fort Worth, Madison had earned

24

two chances to make her way into AT&T Stadium. “We knew going into that week, if I was doing good it was going to be long; it was definitely not a sprint that week, it was a marathon.” Each run held quite a bit of weight, and Madison said she continuously had to point her focus toward the run she had at hand. “My dad really preached to me that week about staying focused and not worrying about anything but the run I had to make in that moment,” she said. As she was experiencing the pressures of the week and the competition, she explained how THSRA played a large role in preparing her for the big stage at AT&T stadium. “My favorite part about THSRA are the 10 regions coming together at state,” Madison said. “Honestly I think that’s one of the major things that prepared me for the American and handling the pressure. Every year I have gone

to state I have grown and have been able to handle pressure better each year.” As she continued to focus on each run as they came, and finally completed the final round in AT&T stadium, she said she was just happy she did her job. “Just being able to rope with my idols Jackie Crawford, and Lari Dee Guy, and Kelcie Chace and making it to AT&T Stadium is mind-blowing, much less winning the American! It’s absolutely mind-blowing.” Rodeo can easily be described as a passion for Madison; however, she has a number of other interests and talents, and the dedication she has seems to push her to success in each. Not only does Madison rodeo, she helps train horses at her family ranch, she is an avid basketball player, Polo team member, jewelry maker and honor roll student. She is currently in the top 4% of her class at Fulshear ISD, and she was 2nd team AllDistrict in basketball along with Academic

All-District. An average day in the life for Madison consists of basketball practice until six, coming home to rope and ride her speed event horses and work on homework. When it’s not basketball season, she practices rodeo and polo, does her homework for the night, and then fills any jewelry orders she might have. Describing Madison’s life as busy almost sounds like an understatement, but “I don’t know what I would do with myself if I wasn’t busy,” she said. “THSRA has taught me a lot about time management.” Madison is from a horse family through and through as both sides of her family own and train horses. Her mom’s side of the family own and operate LA Waters Quarter Horses which includes a breeding and training program, and her dad’s side of the family hosts a long line of rodeo champions and trainers. Her dad is a 4-time NFR Bronc Riding qualifier, while her mom is a retired professional polo player. “Everybody in my family plays such a large role in my success,” Madison said. “I know a lot of people don’t always have that family support, so I am just really grateful to have all of those people in my life supporting me.” Her family also happens to be the people she looks up to the most. Madison said her parents have instilled in her the importance of winning with humility. “I strive to be humble with my wins and not take anything for granted and just keep working hard. I just try to live by that,” she said. In the future, Madison said she wants to rodeo at a good college with a good business school. She has a pretty good track record of achieving the goals she sets her sights on and isn’t afraid of the work that comes with the dreams.

The Bloomer Trailer Giveaway Just Got Even Sweeter

andy Bloomer, President of Bloomer Trailers, announced that the winner of the 2019 Bloomer Trailer giveaway will be given the option to receive the Two-Horse Bloomer Bumper (as advertised on the giveaway ticket) or they can upgrade their prize to a Bloomer Gooseneck Stock Combo Trailer. This big announcement came after Bloomer was “blown away” by the level of participation seen in the program. “Texas High School and Junior High Rodeo have knocked it out of the park this year and we wanted to match their enthusiasm with the option for the winner to pick between two great trailers. We are very proud of the hard work that this organization has put in and we can’t wait to announce the total amount raised in June,” said Bloomer.

PERFORMANCE REPORT

REGION IV JUNIOR HIGH STARS

A

By JESSEE YOUNG – Performance Reporter

nd just like that ........ This season of Jr. High Rodeo for Region 4 wrapped up March 22nd and 23rd, 2019. It was an exciting and thrilling finals! For some it will be the last time to step foot in the arena at a Jr. High event and for some it will be the start of a magical ride. I would like to highlight a couple of Region 4 Jr high stars that now claim the title of All Around Cowboy and Cowgirl. Brayden Morris a 7th grader from Terrell, Texas and Mary Beth Beam an 8th grader from Terrell, Texas. Brayden competed in Breakaway Roping, Goat Tying, Team Roping, Jr Chute Dogging, Jr Bull Riding, Jr. Steer Bareback. Brayden said "Being Jr High All Around

BRAYDEN MORRIS

Cowboy is an honor and I am thankful that God has given me the ability to be able to compete on both ends of the arena". Brayden is looking forward to going to state competition in Gonzales making new memories and hopefully the many hours spent in the practice pen will pay off. He added that after last year's finals he was one position out of qualifying for Nationals and the stated that one was one hard pill to swallow. This year Brayden has a MARY BETH BEAM new outlook, he is positive and full of determination. He will be competing at state in Team Roping, Breakaway Roping and Jr Bulls. Good Job Brayden! Best Wishes at State. Mary Beth qualified in all 6 of her events to advance on to the State competition. She will compete in Team Roping (Heeling), Breakaway Roping, Barrels, Goat tying, and Ribbon Roping as the Runner, Pole Bending and Light Rifle Shooting. Mary Beth stated that she is "thankful for the opportunity God has given her to compete with amazing rodeo athletes who are also wonderful friends. One of her favorite quotes is, "Practice until your idols become your rivals." Every day she seizes the opportunity to be better than the day before. She is especially thankful for the support team behind her, the hours they spend in the practice pen, behind the video cameras recording her, the prayers they pray for her, and the wisdom they share with her. Congratulations Mary Beth job, well done hard work definitely has paid off. The Jr. High State Competition will be held in Gonzales, Texas May 26th through June 1st, 2019. Jr. High National Competition will be held in Huron, South Dakota June 23rd through June 29th, 2019. Good Luck and prayers of safe travel to all the State qualifiers.

MAYCE MAREK OF REGION VI by Catelyn Felts

C

The Whataburger Whatakid is selected due to their ability to excel both in and out of the rodeo arena. Whataburger is proud to recognize a THSRA member from each of the ten Regions who truly upholds the title “Whatakid!” One of the nominees will be chosen at the State Final Rodeo in June as the Whatakid of the Year. In recognition of this accomplishment they will receive free Whataburgers for an entire year!

ongratulations to the Whatakid of the month, Mayce Marek! This eighteen-year-old senior is a superstar in the arena. She previously competed in speed events but after losing a barrel horse to colic, she began working on roping and goat tying. It was a struggle at first but Mayce loved horses and rodeo so she wasn’t going to give up. She started to work at it and eventually fell in love with roping and goat tying, which is what she currently competes in. “Even though I couldn’t run barrels at the level I wanted to any more, I didn’t want to give up rodeo, so I found other events to get good at. It was a blessing in disguise because it opened many doors and I discovered something new that I fell in love with,” Mayce said. “I’m a firm believer that sometimes God says no to majority of your plans because His are far greater.” She has multiple different horses but there is one that really stands out to her. His name is Lucky and lucky he sure is. They bought him when Mayce was 11 so the pair has grown up together. “He’s what I started out tying goats on and is still my A-team today,” Mayce said. She also ropes breakaway on him. Not only has Lucky carried Mayce to multiple titles, he has also carried a few of her friends as well. “In the rodeo world, the family and friends you develop are as true as they come, and borrowing a horse is common due to all the unexpected circumstances we face daily,” Mayce said. “I was thrilled to help make my friends goals possible through a horse I had trained. That was a proud moment for me.” Mayce explained that she wouldn’t be the competitor she is today without Lucky and his faithfulness. Mayce has been around horses since she was born and has

been competing in rodeo since age five. Her list of awards is extensive but even though she has won multiple buckles and saddles, “the memories of each rodeo that are behind each of them are what means the most to me,” Mayce said. Her most recent accomplishment was winning the girls AllAround at the San Antonio Youth Rodeo. For Mayce, rodeo isn’t just a sport or a hobby; it is a completely different way of life. The friends that she has me along the way are unbeatable. “Something that you don’t find anywhere else is this: we are all competing but it’s an awesome feeling when my competition is standing beside me in the box, pushing my calf, holding a video camera or contributing in some form or fashion to my run,” Mayce said. “Rodeo is what I absolutely love to do and the unconditional love and support that I receive from my friends that are also my competition makes it that much better.” Not only does Mayce rodeo, she also played volleyball, basketball and ran track at Jourdanton High School. Although all these activities got crazy some days, she believes that the athletic ability she developed though sports has made her into the goat tier she is today. Mayce also takes her academics very seriously. While she is currently finishing high school online, she was an honor roll student, as well as a member of student council, all through junior high and high school. She also served as a class representative her freshman and sophomore year. When she has some free time, Mayce enjoys helping out other girls with their goat tying. “This sport has carried me so far and I love being able to share my knowledge with others who love it as much as I do and share the same goals,” Mayce said. Now if she isn’t in the arena, which is very slim, Mayce enjoys going to the lake with her friends and family. Her and her cousins love to waterski, wakeboard, and wake surf, as well as are always up for a reckless tube ride. She also enjoys snowboarding, snow skiing, hunting and fishing. A verse that has really helped and guided Mayce throughout her life is Proverbs 3:5-6, “With all your heart you must trust in the Lord and not your own judgment. Always let him lead you, and he will clear the road for you to follow.” When expectation got the best of her freshman year and Mayce found herself in a slump, referring back to this verse brought her hunger for rodeo back and pulled her through her slump. “This verse always came to mind and guided me,” Mayce said. “It kept me straight and helped me remember why I do what I do.” Jackie Crawford is someone Mayce really looks up to. “She is the definition of hard work, determination and woman power. She displays everything that I desire to be one day in and out of the arena,” Mayce said. In the future, Mayce plans to attend Wharton Junior College on a full ride rodeo scholarship where she will major in business and minor in physical therapy. After college, she would one day like to run a facility that provides equine therapy for children with disabilities. “I am very honored to be chosen. It is awesome to see how rewarding things are even when you think no one is paying attention,” Mayce said. She is proud to be this month’s Whatakid!

of practice, by ourselves that create our habits, reactions, timing, hand-eye coordination, and hone our ability to do our jobs effectively every time we compete. Heel-O-Matic Training Systems doesn’t just make plastic cows. They study the habits of proven winners and how they train. They constantly hone their machines to be as lifelike as possible. Most importantly, the team at HOM listen, learn, create, rope, and share their passion for helping ropers achieve their horsemanship and roping

goals. The bottom line to strengthening up your roping skills can be stated in one simple word: reps. -the number of times you deliver your rope in a session. Now, in order to maximize the results from those reps, your

practice should be mimicking live runs as much as possible. The Heel-O-Matic Trainer is scientifically proven to precisely match the hop motion, height, and distance traveled by a real steer and is unmatched by any competitor in the training field. The Heel-O-Matic Trainer is sized to the average steer a roper will draw in competition. For headers, this means your tip angle, body position, horse position, and the view of the horns through your loop will be the exact same as it would be on live cattle. The quick release horns are there as a convenience to help you rebuild faster and get in more runs. For heelers, the timing on the Trainer is superior to any other dummy on the market. Whether you watch the hocks, the feet, or time the hips, the Trainer will

create the exact timing, muscle memory, and horse position needed to catch and dally on hopping live cattle. The best practice in the world is perfect practice on your fundamentals over and over again. The Heel-O-Matic Trainer keeps your practice simple, straightforward, controlled, and as close to real-life as possible. Heel-O-Matic is the original “Training Systems and since 1996 has paved the way for thousands of ropers to create winning habits that continue to reward dividends at the pay window. Call or message the training professionals at Heel-O-Matic today and let them match you up with the perfect practice regime to help you advance your roping to the next level.

PERFORMANCE REPORT

New Adventures

T

By HARLEY JO PERKINS – Performance Reporter

he weekend of April 6th & 7th was the Region V Finals rodeo and it brought many emotions for our grand total of 44 Seniors. Those Seniors were such a huge part of our region and we are greatly going to miss their presence as well as their families. I want to say a special thank you to all the Senior’s parents who have helped Region V continue to grow and run smoothly every weekend. Thank you for your dedication to this region and for always helping out in any way possible. Your kindness and hard work have not gone unnoticed. As for the Seniors, your perseverance and growth throughout all these years in Region V should be something you should always hold onto. During this rodeo season, you have been looked upon by the younger rodeo athletes and inspired them to grow and learn as much as you have. Your hard work and commitment in the practice pen as well as dedication to your academic studies has earned many of you scholarships and a chance at furthering your education. There’s no doubt that you are ready to take on new adventures and see

what you can accomplish on your own. Doing things on your own will be great, but don’t forget to be thankful for your parents and anyone else who has helped you become the student and rodeo athlete you are today. Keep in mind all the time your parents spent staying up late in the arena setting up poles and opening the chute. All the rodeos where your mom never failed to put your rubber bands on and smile at you telling you, “You got this.” The times where your brother or sister videoed your run and couldn’t wait to give you a high five afterwards. The time your grandparents watched you tie your fastest tiedown run or score the highest on your bull ride and gave you a hug with tears in their eyes saying, “I am so proud of you!”. Those times, my friends, are the memories that region V has given us that we should all hold close to our hearts and remember that those times are the most important of all. Colossians 3:17 says, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” This verse is not just for the Seniors, but for all high school rodeo contestants. Be encouraged to do things for the Lord and have a thankful attitude towards what He has given you. Keep working hard at your event as well as your character so that you may shine a light for Jesus. Seniors, be diligent in your walk with the Lord and always remember what is most important. Thank you again to all the Senior’s parents who have worked so hard in Region V, we will miss you dearly.

ongratulations to the McCoy’s Farm and Ranch Family of the Month, the Koehn’s! Rory and his two kids, Garrison and Kennedy own and operate Koehn Cattle Company located in Weimar, Texas. While the ranch has been operating since the 1920s, Rory and his family have been running it full time for about 32 years. “We do a little bit of everything,” Rory said. “Our operation is not centered on one item.” The family’s operations consist of crossbred cattle, stocker cattle, raising bulls and replacement heifers, and buying and selling roping calves. The family also make their own hay and sell some as well. As one can imagine, ranch work is dependent on the season, what type of herds you might be ranching and a number of other variables. While the hours might vary from day-to-day, one thing is for certain: the day doesn’t finish until everything on the ranch has been tended to. “There are no set hours on the ranch,” Rory said. “I have lights in my working pens for a reason.” The family has one full-time ranch hand who tackles anything that comes his way. His job is dependent on the tasks that need to be done a daily basis, and “he goes where he is sent to work,” Rory said. When the time comes for serious cow-working, Rory said he brings in some great hired help to team up and make the cattle working process go smoothly, but when it’s not serious cattle work, Rory, Garrison, Kennedy, and their ranch worker are the ones who keep the

operation going. Garrison is currently rodeoing on the collegiate level, but before that, he was a member of THSRA all four years of high school competing in the calf roping and team roping, while Kennedy is a sophomore THSRA member competing in the pole bending and breakaway roping. There are countless responsibilities that come with running a ranch spanning further than buying cattle and operating expenses. From fertilizer, to medicine, equipment costs, and feed the list can go on. “Every day I start with making a list, and everyone has to step up and do their job,” Rory said. Even though Garrison is at college, he comes home on the weekends he isn’t rodeoing to help out where he can, and Kennedy helps every day where she’s needed once she gets home from school. As time goes by, Rory said the Koehn kids continuously get more involved in the ranching business. Both Kennedy and Garrison own cattle and interest in yearlings. “It gives the kids a sense of accomplishment, and it encourages growth,” he said. When the family is not ranching, Rory said they enjoy rodeoing together, going to church and visiting with rodeo friends. “I was involved in rodeo in my younger years, and my kids have stepped up to keep that tradition alive,” Rory said. In addition to tradition, rodeo has a way of bringing people together. “Rodeo brings families closer and creates a strong bond,” he said. In September of 2018, the Koehn’s tragically lost a big part of their family, Patricia Koehn. She was a mother and a wife, and “was just a major part of our rodeo life,” Rory said. “She loved being there to work and have fun with our rodeo family.” In the midst of hardships, Rory said Region 7 has been a true blessing to each of the Koehn clan. The Koehn’s said they are honored to be chosen as the McCoy’s Farm and Ranch Family of the Month and they are thankful for the partnership and support they provide to the THSRA.

he Ohrt family is no stranger to the rodeo community. Region VI’s very own come out on top in THSRA and TJHRA for the year end. From Victoria, Texas, Amy Ohrt (TJHRA), Clint Ohrt (THSRA) and Kyler Ohrt (TJHRA) each qualified for state in multiple events at the beginning of March. With each of them ending the year end on top in the all-around, they will be headed to state on May 26th – June 1st in Gonzales, TX (JH) and June 9th – 15th in Abilene, TX (HS). Clint Ohrt has competed in THSRA/ TJHRA for 4 years now. He ended out the year first in tie down and fifth in team roping putting him first in the allaround. Clint attended the Generation Next Calf Roping on March 30th – 31st in Brenham, TX. He ended up one out of making it to Vegas, but is happy with how he roped and is ready to try again in June. His advice to Amy and Kyler is to “try your hardest but most importantly, have fun”. Amy Ohrt has been preparing for state by riding her horses everyday and learning to calm her nerves. Her advice to everyone is to relax before you enter the arena. She too also competed in Brenham, along with Clint, qualifying

for Vegas in breakaway and goat tying. Goodluck to Amy and way to represent Region VI! Kyler Ohrt has one goal: to rope his calf. In the middle of his seventhgrade year, last year, Little Red, his calf horse, injured himself. Kyler faced the challenge of roping off a pony to now roping off of a PICTURED (LEFT TO RIGHT): CLINT OHRT WITH HIS TIE AT THE REGION VI AWARDS; horse. “It was very different DOWN CHAMPION BUCKLE KYLER OHRT trying to figure out his style.”, said Kyler, “you have to dip your rope more and it’s a long way down”. Even though he was faced with an obstacle, he over came it. This year, Kyler won the tie down and qualified for state finals. “I am very confident in the arena. After 5 years of roping, my nerves have gone away and I’ve learned to zone out all distractions.” Congratulations to not only Clint, Amy and Kyler but all the rest of the Region VI Junior High state qualifiers! Good luck at state and go represent our region with pride! You got this! REGION VI JUNIOR HIGH GROUP PICTURE BY TAMI K PHOTOGRAPHY

bilene and Gonzales, Texas ... Here we come! Our state finals are just around the corner. Across the state, fellow cowboys & cowgirls are practicing up for that grueling long week of competition. Someone will take home a Texas State Champion title or one of the coveted top 4 spots in their respected events. Several top hands will leave state empty handed, but one thing is for sure, memories will be made. This state finals, I invite each of you to Live Like Will. Those of you who knew my cousin, knew he was never short on a smile or a good time. For those who didn’t know him, I’ll give you a little insight into Will Byler. He was always living everyday to its fullest. Making memo-

ries and adventures was a way of life for Will. A night of steer wrestling practice could easily finish up and turn into a hog hunting expedition. You never knew what you might get into with Will, so you better be up for anything. When Will rodeoed he gave 100 percent and left it all in the arena. Sometimes, he landed flat on his back -- like the time he missed his steer in the state short go in steer wrestling. He was also known to look at the bright side by adding humor to these tough runs. His typical response: “ Well I didn’t break anything .... this time!” Will lived a fuller life then most eighty year old men, and he did it with a grin. No question, he did it his way, not always the right way, according to others, but that was Will. Will put his heart into what he loved, and he loved God. His heart was true. He loved his family and friends, and even complete strangers, especially when he could talk to them about God. One time while at the NFR in Las Vegas, Will got to talking to a taxi driver about God, all the while the family wondering where in the world he could be. When he appeared, the excitement of their conversation showed in his dimpled cheeks as he told us all about his experience. You couldn’t be mad at Will, even if he made you wait. If Will had something on his mind or in his heart that he wanted to do, he spoke of it or acted on it. He wasn’t afraid of failure for he always said he was just learning how not to fail. He went at rodeoing the same way: “If you are trying and get beat, you’re not beaten.” I want to enjoy the ride like my cousin Will did. I want to laugh, I want to live, I want to love, I want to know God. Take a chance and let faith lead you.

Enjoy your ride. It may be a long cattle drive … or a quick four second run. Our runs in the arena don’t define us. It’s the actions we share with complete strangers that do. I want to Live Like Will, our Wild Will of Bellville. 2 Corinthians 5:7: For we live by faith, not by sight.

ike THSRA Region VIII High School, TJHRA Region VIII Junior High, had a successful year. The year was filled with laughter and great memories. As the region

student president, I enjoyed working with the junior high officers; Garrett Talamantes, Boomer Smith, and Sydney Blair. We coordinated grand entries, put up banners, and put on our end of the year awards presentation. I maybe partial, but I have to say region VIII has some great young kids coming up into high school next year and the years to follow. The 2018-2019 TJHRA Region VIII Junior High All Around Champions had an amazing year and accomplished a huge honor, JT Garcia & Carlee Martinez, congrats! We are very excited to have both of you to represent region VIII this May at TJHRA State Finals. Along with the two of them, we have many more talented and hardworking kids headed to state finals. We have some really strong eighth graders that are ready to dominate, but you definitely can’t count out our rookies either. I have faith that our kiddos will represent us very well and everyone will take notice! GOOD LUCK TJHRA REGION VIII STATE QUALIFERS!!!!!!!

he weekend of March 10 and 11 brought an end to the season for the rodeo athletes of Region IX. Hard work throughout the year paid off for many and heartbreak was felt by others. The day started off with the boys of the bareback, and Bradlee Miller dominated the weekend with a score of 75 and 70 to take the Championship for the year. The barrels were up next, and senior Kysan Buckner turned in two amazing runs to win both rodeos and secure her spot in the top 5. However consistent runs all year earned Zoey Korenek the year end title of Champion Barrel Racer. Rough stock riders loaded the bulls, and the bulls were definitely ready and not one cowboy could tame them. In rodeo two Cavalry Norris defeated them and earned a score of 79, but Bradlee Miller’s rides throughout the season earned him his second championship. The girls in the breakaway were up next and past Region IX Champion took the win with a 2.99, and Lexie Miller was a 2.54 to secure her spot in the stop 10 and a trip to State. The season win created yet another championship for Taylor Lawson. The boys then took their turn in the roping where Grishman Vaught took the first win, and Cash Enderli took the

second to not only win the finals rodeo but the year end championship title. Half way through the rodeo, the steers were loaded for the steer wrestling. Tyler Bednarz took win one with a 6.08, and Gatlin Peck took the win in rodeo two with a 5.14. The year end championship went to Tyler who turned in solid runs all year. Goats were up next and junior Lacy Bruening truly dominated the weekend and year. Lacy was a 7.18 and a 6.91 for the weekend to show why she is the Region IX Goat Tying Champion. Team ropers Blake Georg and Will Farris won rodeo one with a 6.36, but Tristan Sullivan and Hagen Herring sped things up to earn the second win with a 4.45 and the Reserve Championship title. The Championship was well earned by William Lindsey and Jake Starns who were consistently quick all year long. The rodeo events of the day were almost complete with only one event left, the pole bending. Katy Webb and her mount Ruby were totally in sync taking home the wins in both rodeos with a 20.394 and a smoking 19.953. Senior Aly Ghormley, despite her injuries, toughed it out to take home the Pole Bending Championship. Rookie All Around Championships were earned by Bradlee Miller and Brooklyn Balch. Bradlee competed in bulls, bareback, tiedown and team roping to earn his title. Brooklyn competed in barrels, poles, goats and breakaway. Bradlee earned enough points to also win the All Around Champion title along with Aly Ghormley who completed in all the girl’s events. Cutting and reining cow horse took place earlier in the year. The Cutting Championships went to Jake Starns and Aly Ghormley, while the Reining Cow Horse title was earned by Paige Smith.

PERFORMANCE REPORT Astonishing Athletes Of Region X

R

By BRITTNE

THOMAS – Performance Reporter

egion X has multiple athletes that competed to make a spot in top 10 in their events. This year was a very difficult year. Every athlete that stepped on to the arena dirt put everything out in the arena. They competed against the best and will continue to compete against the best in the future. These two athletes competed this year and left everything in the arena and had a great year. Elizabeth Frost was a great competitor in the arena and outside the arena. Elizabeth had to undergo surgery in November, but before her surgery she competed in Poles, Barrels, and Breakaway. She also competed in sports at her school. She was a fierce competitor in and out of the arena. She was excited to finish out her season at Region X. She loves how region X feels like a big family. Not only does she love that it feels like a family, she also loves the competition. Elizabeth Frost enjoys being able to compete against her friends, she knows she has created multiple friendships at Region X. Even though she competed this year

she sadly did not make it to state. Once she graduates, she will be attending Vernon College. She will be rodeoing in college and we will all be cheering her on. She is going to study animal science and agriculture. We all hope she will do amazing things. Another one of Region X’s astonishing athletes is Payton Lackey. Payton is also graduating this year. Once Payton gets his diploma, and celebrate with his friends and family, he will be going to college. He is excited to get his diploma and start another chapter in his life. He will be attending Tarleton State University in Stephenville. At Tarleton Payton will be studying molecular biology. He has big plans for himself in the future. He has many reasons why he loves Region X and why he decided to compete his last year in high school at Region X. One of his main reason why he decided to compete at Region X is because of the horses. Payton Lackey competes in bareback riding, and he also made it state in bareback riding. Our contractor for Regions is also the stock that is taken to state. With him able to ride the stock he knows what to prepare for when he gets to state. Region X could not be more proud of these two athletes and all the other athletes that competed this season.

Remember to Thank Our Sponsors

R

egion 9 had a awesome season this year. There were some changes and we had so many of our contestants and families step up to offer help in so many ways. We were the largest region in the state with 75 contestants in all. More the most, these 75 did not hardly miss a rodeo this season. The competition was some of the best I have seen in the junior high arena from the roping, speed, rough stock to tying of goats. There are several Region 9 contestants that will be shining after the last run in Gonzales at the State Finals. SPEED WILLIAMS PREPARES REGION X TEAM ROPERS

by AVERY FOEGELLE – TJHRA Region X Student Secretary

S

peed Williams, winner of 8 consecutive Team Roping World Titles, and father of Hali (Region X Junior High All Around Cowgirl), and Gabe (Region X Junior High Boys Rookie of the Year), donated his time to put on a team roping clinic for Region X competitors. The purpose of this clinic was to prepare the Region X team roping competitors for the TJHRA State Finals in

50

Gonzales, Texas, as well as a major fundraiser to provide travel funds for the State Finals qualifiers. Speed Williams provided his Speed Trainers, individual participant videos with feedback, and horsemanship pointers and guidance. The 2- day clinic was packed with activities that focused on improving each participant’s performance. The clinic offered the students an opportunity to share information and learn from each other. The clinic not only provided travel funds for Region X but the opportunity for the students to meet and learn from a world class athlete. At the conclusion, everyone agreed they were better prepared for state finals and wanted the clinic to become an annual event.
