Maker of the Lone Star® Brand

For over eighty years, experience has taught us that nobody cares more about pets and animals than their owners. They ask for quality products, friendly and helpful customer service, and competitive pricing. And we’ve spent years developing and refining our products to meet their high expectations. Today, Texas Farm Products is a fourth-generation company, known worldwide for the production of quality livestock feeds and pet foods. The company has developed a reputation of integrity that is generated by a large number of animal-loving employees, many of who have been devoted to the company for several decades. To keep pace with the ever-changing needs of their customers, new products continue to be developed. Texas Farm Products’ cutting edge research and development program is continually creating and monitoring new products that tomorrow may represent new standards within the industry. At Lone Star®, we are obsessed with quality. We are aware that the Lone Star reputation is found in every bag of feed that ships from our plant. That’s why we strive to produce superior products. Our USDA certified laboratory is an integral part of the production process. From the raw materials that come in by rail car and truck to the finished products that are shipped to customers, every component is tested and retested. This assures ingredient purity as well as formulation accuracy in every bag that leaves the plant. The laboratory techniques include state-of-the-art computer analysis as well as visual examination by seasoned lab personnel to ensure consistency. What you see on the label is what you get in the bag and it is the same every time, guaranteed. We are committed to making our formulas safe and nutritious, and to provide maximum palatability and nutrition that maintains the health of your animals. Lone Star Show Feeds are formulated to meet the nutritional needs of animals being fed for show. They are designed to optimize growth and development early during the feeding period. Lone Star Show Feeds contain important, high quality ingredients that serve specific nutritional purposes to keep your animal healthy throughout all stages of life. Lone Star provides show feeds for most classes of show animals, including market steer, bull breed, beef breed female, dairy female, halter horse, market lamb, market goat, market hog, broilers, rabbits, and sheep. In Memory Of

RAYMOND BATTEN Raymond Batten, a 27-year employee of Texas Farm Products, passed away on January 10, 2016. Many people associated with the THSRA and the students who passed through the organization over the years knew Raymond as an ambassador for Lone Star Feeds. As the Vice President of the feed sales division, Raymond attended the THSRA Finals for many years with his sales staff. He enjoyed every minute of the time he spent supporting the rodeo kids, many of whom represent the future of agriculture in Texas. Raymond was a native of Franklin, Texas where he was an ag teacher for 16 years. He went to work for Texas Farm Products Company in 1986 as a sales representative. After he was promoted to Vice President of the Feed and Fertilizer Division in 1999, Raymond and his wife, Kay, made their home in Nacogdoches. Raymond was an avid hunter and fisherman; he also enjoyed farming and ranching. And he loved his job working in the agriculture industry where he met people and made friends at every stop along the way. Since 2002, when Lone Star became a sponsor, Raymond Batten was the face of Lone Star Feed at the THSRA Finals where he encouraged and supported the educational advancement of rural-oriented kids in Texas. The Raymond Batten Scholarship Fund was established to continue his support of the THSRA. Raymond will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.

PEYTON FERGUSON OF REGION IX by Catelyn Felts

The Whataburger Whatakid is selected due to their ability to excel both in and out of the rodeo arena. Whataburger is proud to recognize a THSRA member from each of the ten Regions who truly upholds the title “Whatakid!” One of the nominees will be chosen at the State Final Rodeo in June as the Whatakid of the Year. In recognition of this accomplishment they will receive free Whataburgers for an entire year!

Congratulations to this month’s Whatakid, Peyton Ferguson! The Region 9 native is currently a Junior at COCH ISD in Coldspring, Texas. He has been a member of the Texas High School Rodeo Association for three years now competing on the heel side of the team roping event. While Ferguson enjoys team roping, he said the THSRA is more than just a place to compete. “I just like being in the arena helping everyone out, and being a part of what is going on.” As a member of the organization, Ferguson said he has become more comfortable meeting new people and speaking in front of groups. “Usually I would not talk

8

in front of a crowd or new people in general,” he said. “But, going to the high school rodeos and getting to talk to new people all the time has helped me with that.” Ferguson also explained how when he first joined the organization, he would show up for his event, compete, and leave as soon as he was finished. Now, he is there when the rodeo first begins to carry grand entry flags, and he does not leave until the last event is finished with. “My sophomore year I really started to get involved and help out with the rodeo wherever they needed help,” Ferguson said. He served as the team roping director his sophomore year, and he was even nominated for the student vice president position for Region 9. Ferguson’s work ethic is not only reserved for the rodeo arena, but is carried out in his day-to-day routine as well. He has been an AB honor roll student his entire educational career, he currently shows breeding heifers through the FFA, he is in the process of obtaining his Lone Star degree through the FFA, and he was recently awarded the Presidents Award by the San Jacinto County Fairground Committee for working hard to improve the county’s fairgrounds in preparation for rodeos hosted there in the future. Ferguson’s humbled personality is not only portrayed through his accomplishments, but in his life motto as well. The 17-year-old explained how he strives to live his life by “keeping my head down, keep everything good and straight and do what I do best at my best possible potential.” In the future, Ferguson said he hopes to continue his rodeo career on the collegiate level and pursue a degree in business. His ultimate career goal is to start a business raising his own show animals. Until then, Ferguson said he is very honored to be selected as the Whatakid of the month for Region 9. “I know there are a lot of other kids who deserve to get it, and knowing somebody is watching and does realize the hard work I am doing means a lot.” Congratulations to Peyton Ferguson. We wish him the best of luck in all of his future endeavors and we know he will continue to achieve great things!

Farm & Ranch Family The folks at McCoy’s Building Supply understand that it takes a lot of hard work and the whole family pitching in to get things done on a farm or ranch. That’s why we’d like to take some time out to salute Texas High School Rodeo Association families who are farmers and ranchers. In our monthly Farm & Ranch Family Spotlight, we’ll feature one family, sharing their story of how they work together as a family to make their farm or ranch successful. The spotlight will run for 10 months; each month will feature a different Region. Each Regional McCoy’s Farm and Ranch Family will receive a $100 McCoy’s Gift Card. The McCoy’s Farm and Ranch Family of the Year will receive a $500 McCoy’s Gift Card and will be announced at the 2016 THSRA State Finals.

ongratulations to the McCoy’s Farm and Ranch Family of the month, the Hoffmann’s of Region 9! Fred and Tammy; and their three kids, Colt, Shara, and Emalee, own and operate Hoffmann Cattle Co. located in Marlin, Texas and Red Rock New Mexico. Their main operation consists of raising high performance Corriente cattle for team roping. Fred started his family business in 1971, and today the family owns and manages a herd of producing cows in both locations. In order for their operation to be successful, the whole family works together in order complete the tasks at hand. Emalee explained how patience and teamwork are two of the main factors that keep their operation running smoothly. “Everyone has a special role, and it is very important that everyone participates,” Emalee said. “Each person has their own special talents which helps contribute to our success.” Though ranching takes a lot of time and hard work, the family said they enjoy the freedom of making their own hours and getting to work with each other every day. Some of the daily tasks around the Hoffmann Ranch include rounding up, doctoring, branding and sorting cattle as well as driving tractors and trailers. Emalee said when the family is not ranching together, they enjoy going to family gatherings, snow skiing, eating crawfish, riding around their ranches, and of course going to rodeos together! The family said they especially love the high school rodeos because “it’s our time we get to relax and watch a sport that we all love!” Emalee competes in the barrel racing, pole bending, and breakaway roping at the Region 9 rodeos. Going to rodeos also allows the family to have the opportunity to showcase their corriente cattle as well as

compete and participate. The family explained how they appreciate McCoy’s partnership with the Texas High School Rodeo Association and all that they do for the organization. The closest McCoy’s to them is located in Waco, Texas and they shop there on a regular basis. “There are always multiple repairs needed around the ranch,” Emalee said. “It seems like every day you can find something that needs attention; specifically, fencing, mechanical repairs, and building upgrades. The family said they are very surprised and thankful at the same time to be named the McCoy’s Farm and Ranch Family of the month. “Ranching is something we all love to do together as a family, so being recognized is really an honor for us,” Emalee said.

onzales is one of the earliest Anglo-American settlements in Texas, the first west of the Colorado River. It was established by Empresario Green DeWitt as the capital of his colony in August 1825. DeWitt named the community for Rafael Gonzáles, governor of Coahuila y Tejas. The 49 original blocks and seven public squares laid out in the shape of a Greek cross withstood the test of time and form the first Texas History Museum District. Gonzales is most famous because it was the site of the first skirmish of the Texas Revolution. In 1831, the Mexican government gave the settlers a small cannon for protection against Indian attacks. At the outbreak of settler hostilities, a contingent of Mexican soldiers was sent from San Antonio to retrieve the cannon. On 2 October 1835, Texians under the command of John H. Moore confronted them. The Texans had fashioned a flag with the words “Come and take it”. The Texans successfully resisted the federal troops in what became known as the Battle of Gonzales. Gonzales later contributed thirty-two men from the Gonzales Ranging Company to the illfated defense of the Alamo. It was to Gonzales that Susanna Dickinson, widow of one of the Alamo defenders, and Joe, the slave of William B. Travis, fled with news of the Alamo massacre. General Sam Houston was here organizing the Texas army and anticipated the town would be the next target of General Antonio López de Santa Anna and the Mexican army. He had the town burned and ordered a retreat, thus precipitating the Runaway Scrape. If you go visit the Gonzales Memorial Museum which serves a memorial to these 32 men you will see actual artifacts from this period in time. The real Come and Take It cannon is located in the museum to see up close and you can even touch it! Beautiful building full of Texas history and well worth a visit. Some of the historical sites you may want to visit are the Old Jail Museum which is a hidden treat. Located across from the fire station, the old Jailhouse staff will take you on a free personal tour of the first and second floors and allow you inside the jail cells. The walls have graffiti from former prisonsers. There is a gallows like the original that was in there on the second floor. Worth a visit and free!

12

There is a driving tour with signs located around the town. The tour goes in a loop and you can enter at any point so you will not miss any of the historical focus points of the town. The tour is free and you can download an app from Itunes with narration. It is called TOUR GONZALES. There are many historical homes and buildings that have been beautifully maintained and will take you back in time. This year the JB Wells facility has added a convention expo center where approximately 75 booths will be located. These booths will include boutique style shopping and agriculture and equine products. There is something for everyone so don’t miss out. The expo center is air conditioned so it will be a popular hangout in between performances. The Champion’s Café will also be located in the expo center and will have an area to buy snacks and food. Each day a different region will be providing food and snacks to sell. All proceeds will benefit the TJHRA national team for expenses when traveling to nationals. This will be great place to hang out and meet new friends from all across the state.

onzales is so excited to have the Texas Junior High State Finals Rodeo back in Gonzales for the next three years. Gonzales has been really busy preparing for the first year on the three year contract. This year the J.B. Wells Expo will be in full operations. The vendors will be located in the Expo this year, they will enjoy being free of any elements of mother nature and will be in central air. I think everyone will really enjoy being able to utilize the Expo – for the first time we will not be checking in at the show barn office but we will be in the Expo! During the lunch times we have invited local groups out to the Expo to sell plate lunches. How cool is that, you can pick up a home cooked meal during the lunch hour, we will have tables set up for you to enjoy or you can take back to your trailer. Below is the menu that they will be serving each day. JR. HIGH RODEO LUNCHES Sunday May 22 – FFA Shooting Team – Pork steaks, giblet rice, and green beans Monday May 23 – Gonzales Youth Center – Chicken Quarters, beans and rice Tuesday May 24 – Fire Department – Chicken fried steaks, mashed pota toes, and green beans Sundowners 4-H Club will have a bake sale in conjunction with the lunch on Tuesday. Wednesday May 25 – VFW – Pulled pork sandwiches Thursday May 26 – OPEN – as of now Friday May 27 – LULAC – Brisket sandwiches w/ chips, sausage wraps and cups of corn We hope everyone is as excited as we are for the upcoming state finals. We look forward to you pulling into the J.B. Wells Arena very soon!

ri-state finals and state finals are creeping us on us slowly but surely! This is the time of the year that everything gets harder with students being busier now than any other time of the year. “It’s not about being better then someone else, its about being better than you were yesterday.” - Trevor Brazile “Every pro was once an amateur, every expert was once a beginner, so dream big.” - Tuff Cooper “You mentally get ahold of yourself and don’t let that moment control you. You go do what you’ve done a million times.” - Sherry Cervi These are just a few people that we idol in our sport and they obviously have been in busy times that makes it hard to stick with it. Everyone who is been successful have had to go through days that make them want to pull a couple of irons out of the fire. So let’s buckle down for the next 30 something days of school and go do our best in everything we do!

will last a lifetime. These special friendships are full of memories to be made, lessons to be learned, and joy and laughter to be shared. The relationships we make in rodeo can easily last a lifetime. Considering rodeo has no age limit you can go from rodeoing with someone from the time you are a small child to well into your adult life. This is part of what makes rodeo such a special sport. The friends you make while involved in this sport are one of a kind. They will support you when you need it most and never let you go without something you need. Region II junior Hannah Martin spoke a little bit about what she has learned from her friendships she has made through rodeo: “I have learned that you support others no matter what and they will support you. cherished the excitement of watching my friends succeed.” Senior in Region II Talyn Messick also spoke about what she has learned from and enjoyed about her rodeo friendships, “Through my friendships in rodeo I have learned how to be supportive of the competition. No matter if you have the fastest time or the slowest time, when one of your friends goes into that arena, you’re praying they have a smoking run. Even if it’s going to beat you, you hope they ride to the best of their abilities. I cherish these friendships made through rodeo because I know they will be life long, because rodeo isn’t a sport you can just drop. Whether or not you quit rodeoing you will always find yourself caught up in that lifestyle. I cherish the fact that you have friends that have the same interests as you, so they are more understanding of you and get the person you really are.” As you can see. . . these relationships are built to last. Whether it’s to go on a late night Whataburger run, lend you a tube of bute, or just talk after a bad run or ride, your rodeo friends will most certainly be there. The people you connect with in rodeo will be the most supportive and caring people you will ever meet. Friendships of this assortment can last all the way from the twelve and under to over forty years later when your own children are rodeoing. I personally have cherished and learned more from these friendships than any others. These relationships are so special and worth having. The joy, memories, and lessons that come out of these relationships are priceless and irreplaceable. They will last you a lifetime. Whether you leave the rodeo world or not, they will always find you. These relationships are what make the great sport of rodeo so special and rewarding. So with that, good luck Region II, in all that you do.

he backbone of every organization is a good secretary, and region three is no exception. When it comes to running the office side of rodeo. Without a great secretary, region three would not survive. The secretary is in charge of all the money, from taking entries to dispersing prize money. Next comes the entry of data, from the region standings and points, to the balancing of the books and staying on top of the regions financial status. That extremely summarized description, is the job of Ms. Kelly Williams, our wonderful secretary for region three. Ms. Kelly is finishing up her eleventh year as secretary, and plans to go nowhere soon. She says her combined experiences with the best kids, parents, and by far the most active board has contributed to the absolute enjoyment of her job. The most amazing moment of her job has been watching the kids’ transition to making that senior

ride the night of finals. The biggest challenge on her part is enforcing deadlines while trying to be nice, sometimes it takes a little whip cracking to get the job done in a punctual manner. While the region and her job are tough to balance, whenever she has free time Ms. Kelly loves to shop. To quote, “I’ve never seen a sale I don’t like”. She also loves going out with friends to dance, and enjoys throwing down some tunes at karaoke. However, being the secretary has enriched her life so much, she misses the hustle and bustle of the rodeo during the summer break. The most important quality of a secretary in Ms. Kelly’s opinion is a great go-getter positive attitude, however, some organizational skills never hurt as she would say. Customer service is also important to Ms. Kelly, who treats people like they wish to be treated. Putting people first and

“After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.” 1 Peter 5:10 letting them know they are important is what keeps region three full of members and entries. Those people are also invited to give suggestions, however, I will be the first to say I do not think there would be much else to do with the phenomenal service we receive. Being a secretary is not going to be easy, but we can all agree Ms. Williams does a fantastic job and has been wonderful for the region. She is, after all, the “spine” of the rodeo and region three could not stand without a secretary of her caliber.

PERFORMANCE REPORT

Magnificent Moms

O

By MCKENZIE RAY– ARIAT Performance Reporter

n May 9th, 1914, “Mother’s Day” was officially recognized as a national holiday. It’s a day that we use to acknowledge those who bring life to the world, a day to celebrate our moms. The one thing that everyone, and I mean everyone has in common is that they have a mother, (and a father, but we’ll talk about them on their day.) and throughout our lives, our mothers set the precedent that we’re supposed to follow. They set examples for us when we’re young, teach us patience, teach us kindness, they show us right from wrong. They help us learn to walk, read and write, and how to say our “A-B-C’s”. No task is too big or too small for a mother, and as we grow older, they never stop helping us grow to be the individuals that we are. At this age, a mother is your closest confidant, she’s the biggest supporter of your dreams and goals, and she’s the person you can count on through anything. The rodeo world is a place where moms are especially important. They are our secretaries, our announcers, and our board members. They’re the women who sit for hours upon hours watching every run. They are the

“videoers”. They are the alley-way help. They’re the loudest voice in the stands. They keep times, and pick up checks, and pay entry fees, and enter us in the first place. It’s easy to overlook, but mothers are present in nearly every aspect of high school rodeo, whether they work within the Region or they stay behind the scenes. “Rodeo Moms” are rockstars, through and through. So on this Mother’s Day, let your mom know how much you appreciate what she does for you. Get her a card, or flowers, or take the traditional route and write her a letter, or take her to lunch. Show your mom that all those things she does for you daily aren’t overlooked. Above all though, be thankful for her, and never take her for granted. “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” - Proverbs 31:25-30

nd the results are in!!! Region V members experienced some Hail Mary passes and unbelievable outcomes on the way to crowning our champions. With many events neck in neck at the finals it was anyone’s guess as to who would be riding a new saddle or sporting a new buckle. Many of us found divine intervention or as others may call it LUCK was the key to many lead changes that took place that Saturday and Sunday in Nacogdoches Texas. Logan Cook cer-

A

tainly didn’t need luck as he locked up the calf roping, saddle bronc and All Around titles. Team Ropers Clayton Lowery and Cayl Sieber took the team roping title by a two point lead, while Shiloh Stone wrestled two to the ROOKIE COWGIRL AND COWBOY CHAMPIONS, ground to win the HALEY HORN AND KANE KEY Steer wrestling saddle. Emily Smith and Skylar Woolls were our Region V Champion Cutters. Seth Ruston rode two rank bulls to win the average and the Bull Riding title. Jessica Lewis laid down two smoking barrel runs to claim the beautiful barrel racing saddle, as Mersadie Martin turned our attention to the breakaway and roped in a new saddle to add to her collection. Lexi Smith who seemed to lead our pole bending all year made two flawless runs to dominate the finals and

claim the title of Champion. As luck goes I was able to sneak in a 7.9 goat run and happily accept the beautiful saddle for the year end. Trey Thomas also spurred his way to victory in the Bareback riding and Colleen Bridges won one of our newest events, the Reined Cow horse. A really Big Shout out goes to Haley Horn who won our all-around title and Rookie All around, along with Kane Key who won the Boys Rookie All Around. That is an awesome accomplishment in our very tough and competitive region. Our finals weekend was also our senior banquet and Scholarship time with over twenty two (22) seniors receiving scholarships and over forty (40) seniors graduating. As seniors, the realization that after as State and Nationals come to an end, our high school rodeo careers will as well with some in tears and others looking forward to College Rodeo and a new chapter in their lives. As for me, I could not have asked for a better four years and I want to Thank Region V President Gene Arceneaux, his wife Phyllis, our secretary Susan Baldwin, the directors, parents and all the people involved in our sport who made it all possible CAUSE ITS BEEN ONE HECK OF A RIDE. So until next time LET GO AND LET GOD!!!

ongratulations Region 6, on y’all’s amazing performance this season! All of y’all’s hard work has surely paid off. The results are in, entry forms signed, and office fees are paid. Whether you are headed back to Gonzales at the end of this month, or up to Abilene in the beginning of June; we’re definitely going to show Texas whose boss. No matter how your season turned out, we have all made considerable amounts of progress, and thus succeeded. Don’t forget that success is not being in first place all the time, but rather persevering and rising to the occasion. We have put in all the work and the muscle memory is there, so let’s make it happen! Rodeo isn’t just about bringing home a check, it’s also about having fun with good people. We can get caught up in our preride routines and forget to enjoy the moment we are in. We take for granted that we will always be rodeoing, but we need to treat every rodeo like it is our last, since we never know what God has in store for us. Don’t

let the frustrations of not getting a perfect run ruin your attitude for the rest of the day. You’ve got several more opportunities throughout the week to make up for your mistakes, and that’s not including all your time in the practice pen. On the other hand, if you didn’t make it to state, don’t worry! You’ve got the rest of not just your high school career, but your college rodeo career to make a change. On the days that you aren’t out there working your butt off, someone else is. Clif Cooper himself confessed that his paychecks reflect the amount of work he puts in. “I know Trevor and Tuf are out there working, which makes me wanna get out in the practice pen too. When you don’t work hard, you get left behind.” Don’t get lazy, and don’t give up, because if you’re gonna make it in rodeo, you better get used to it.

PERFORMANCE REPORT

– ARIAT Performance Reporter

egion VII is heating up the competition for State early this year! We have five outstanding candidates running for offices at the Junior High finals this year. Each of these five cowboys and cowgirls had a little bit to say about each of their campaign’s this year. Mr. Dugan Chandler a candidate for Junior High State Secretary says, “I may be small, but I can stand tall. I am running for TJHRA Secretary because I felt I have the leadership skills necessary to be a organized and responsible officer. As a leader, I am serving as 6th grade student council rep and I am a member of the National Junior Honor Society. The TJHRA has provided me with growth and enthusiasm towards the sport of rodeo. I will do my best to fulfill all the duties required as secretary. I will represent this state and this sport to the fullest. I consider myself a team player and will make sure everyone has a voice and that I listen. My motto for this campaign is "Together we will make TJHRA great". Please VOTE Dugan Chandler.” 7th grader Miss. Paisley Pierce is running for our TJHRA Vice-President. For the 2015 year she has served as our TJHRA Secretary but she also is a past state pole bending and region barrel rac-

ing student director. Paisley said, “I currently participate in Region VII in pole bending, barrel racing, goat tying, breakaway roping, and ribbon roping. I have been rodeoing since I was 4 years old and it is still my passion! I believe in the Texas Junior High Rodeo Association and its goal to improve and promote Junior High School Rodeo. I want to be your voice for TJHRA and promote Texas as the "Best of the Best"! It would be an honor to be able to represent the TJHRA as an officer! I would like to wish all the contestants at the TJHRA state finals the Best of Luck and I look forward to seeing you all there!” Our presidential candidate from region VII is Miss. Bailey Gubert she is in the Jr High National Honor Society as a 7th grader. “I have been riding for 11 years and rodeoing for 6 years. My Favorite Event is Barrel Racing and I love spending time with my family and friends.” When you ask her why she should be the Junior High President she says “I love this sport, rodeo is my passion. There is so much to learn from the sport of Rodeo: sportsmanship, education, responsibility and determination. I want to represent Texas and achieve the goals that have been set for TJHRA. TJHRA allows the participation of contestants to be involved and I want to help make a difference.” Our next candidate for the 2016 race is Miss Rylee Reina. “I am from Wharton Texas. I will soon compete at my first TJHRA State Finals as a 6th grade competitor. I am seeking election as Secretary of the Texas Junior High Rodeo Association. I hope to represent the great state of Texas at the national level and do all I can to preserve rodeo and it's heritage. I am blessed to have been born into a family with a long history in rodeo, cutting, and ranching. I have competed in the rodeo world since I was 3 years old. If elected I will look forward to traveling with all of the other officers, meeting sponsors, and other rodeo contestants from other states. Vote Rylee Reina for Secretary. It's not my first rodeo.“ Mr. Billy Ortiz is the final candidate from region VII seeking office this year. “ I am currently in the 7th grade at Bellville junior high. This has been my first year competing in the Junior high division and I have had an amazing experience. I also compete in YRA, and other rodeos throughout the year. I have enjoyed meeting new friends, being inspired by my fellow competitors, served as the boys goat tying student director and expanded my love for this sport. I am honored to be the junior high boys rookie of the year and to have qualified to state in 4 events. I would be grateful for the opportunity to represent Region VII as Vice President and to share with others the wonderful experience I have had. Coming from a family of ropers, I have grown watching my dad, my uncle, and my Pa participate in rodeos. My family has taught me to believe in Jesus and hard own and perseverance are the path to success and I take my training very seriously.” Contestants make sure to vote region VII at state this year to represent TJHRA for the 2016-2017 year. Good luck to each candidate/contestant and most of all have fun!

THSRA & TJHRA LEADERSHIP TOURS LONE STAR FEED FACILITY

I

n April, the official feed sponsor of THSRA & TJHRA invited our leadership to come and tour their impressive facility located in Nacogdoches. You know them as Lone Star Feed, a Texas-based company that produces high quality feed (some that can be purchased in their iconic red, white and blue bags). Lone Star Feed is actually just one of the many brands that Texas Farm Products produces. They also produce Lone Star Feed and Fertilizer, Precise Pet Products, Star Pro, ANF, and Green Up. They have been around for a while not only as a sponsor of our organization (over 15 years), but they have been striving toward nutritional excellence since 1930. That experience has taught them that nobody cares more about pets and animals than owners. Owners ask for quality products, friendly and helpful customer service, and competitive pricing. They have answered that call by spending years developing and refining their products to meet those high expectations. All of their feeds and pet foods are proudly made in the USA by one of the oldest and most respected manufacturing companies in the south. One of only a handful of third-generation, family owned businesses, Joe Bob Stewart, Vice President of Feed and Fertilizer for Texas Farm Products allowed us to peek behind the curtain for a day and we learned a lot more about what an amazing company partners with us. Their dedication to producing the best product was clear in their attention to every detail. The process from producing the feed in the lab to shipping it to a feed store near you seems like a massive undertaking, but with 86 years of experience they have it all down to an exact science. The thing that impressed us the most were the people and how much pride they all took in the job that they do. We are proud to have Lone Star Feed as a partner and we hope that you are feeding their product in your barn. PHOTOS (CLOCKWISE FROM BOTTOM LEFT): Walking through the mill seeing all the different types of feed ready to ship; That day's samples of chicken, cattle and horse feeds that had already been quality control tested before shipping; THSRA President, Steve Dickey and Joe Bob Stewart, VP of Feed and Fertilizer talking with the shipping supervisor; Lone Star employee fulfilling an order

PERFORMANCE REPORT Benefits of High School Rodeo

By Melissa

C

Garcia – ARIAT Performance Reporter

ompeting in Texas High School Rodeo Association can be intimidating, but it is one of the best organizations a high school student cane be associated with. For those that wish to continue rodeo after high school, it is the BEST organization to help take the necessary steps toward reaching the professional level. Every region has fierce competition but at the state level things get more intense. As we prepare for finals a few of Region VIII members had some things to share about how this season went and how they are getting ready for their week in Abilene. Region VIII’s Serah Kate Blair says that moving into high school rodeo really opened up her eyes to competitive rodeo. “I was blessed this year to qualify for state finals. I was 2nd in Goat Tying and 7th in Breakaway. I will also compete in light rifle. I’ve learned how important every tie and every loop is, and what it really takes to achieve your goals. I am excited and nervous about state finals, but I plan to keep working hard and prepare for it.” I think a lot of people under-estimate High School rodeo and don’t take into consideration the time, effort, and practice that gets put into each event. Each competitor puts their all into their event, and with that comes a lot of pressure when you have to "...compete with the best rodeo contestants in the state of Texas," says Logan Quinn. State finals is the place to give every last bit of what you've got, and leave nothing behind. There are so many emotions leading up to finals, and although the time allotted

in the events may not be a lot, it means everything to the contestants and most of all to their rodeo season. “This season was by far the most exciting rodeo season I have ever had! I won my first saddle and it meant so much to me for my first saddle to be a champion goat saddle. I am thrilled to be going to Abilene this year and not only to compete with the best rodeo contestants in the state of Texas, but to see all of my friends that I have made the past two years that I was there.” The biggest thrill we all work so hard for is hearing the chutes or watching the gates open up. If anyone says they have passed the nerve stage, they're lying. MACKENZIE BRYCE As Morgan Arnold points out, "...you will always get that butterfly feeling in your stomach when you pull up to those gates." That being said, there is no other feeling that compares. Each event requires certain skills, however I believe it is safe to say each event requires confidence, concentration; but most of all, you have fun doing it. “My season started off pretty rocky when I sprained my ankle and had to skip a rodeo but with the prayers and love from my rodeo family it helped me to qualify in the top 5! Going into finals is a feeling that is hard to explain. I don't care if it is your senior year, you will always get that butterfly feeling in your stomach when you pull up to those gates but I have full confidence that my horses will pull through for me and hopefully qualify for nationals.” Despite the pressure that’s on contestants at state, LOGAN QUINN Rhett Kelley says “This was my first year competing in high school rodeo and I enjoyed every bit of it. I met a lot of people that I will be able to see down the road at other rodeos and know we will be able to help each other out when needed. I placed 2nd in bull riding, and I feel really confident about state finals because I have been practicing a lot. He also reminds himself, "no matter how big the competition is, I have to think of it as just another rodeo.” Too much stress can cause a lot of different problems, so going in with a positive mindset will definitely have an effect on the outcome. Mackenzie Bryce says “This year meant a lot to me, being my first year in high school. Nothing was real different other than the competition. I was very fortunate to qualify in barrels this year competing on one horse, my main man, Dash For The House! I am so excited and ready for state. I can’t thank the good Lord above enough for all of the blessings he has given me this year.” Brett Garza says “This season meant a lot to me. The reason is because it is my last year in high school and it was my last year to have an exciting time with some of my good friends. I did great my last year and I won my region in the bull riding. The way I feel about going to state is a great feeling. I have been practicing hard and getting on some great bulls, trying to boost my confidence and work on my form and just give it my all for my last year to high school rodeo.” All emotions aside, High School rodeo is a great way to meet people who share the same interests and passion for the sport as you. Everyone in this sport understands the responsibilities that come with it. The sacrifices made and commitment are like no other.

PERFORMANCE REPORT

By EMALEE HOFFMANN– ARIAT Performance Reporter

T

he 2015-2016 Region 9 High School rodeo season has officially come to a close. With only state left for the top 10 in each event left for this year, those competitors are preparing for their final hoorah of the year. Region 9 had their finals on March 19th at the Walker County Fairgrounds in Huntsville. It was a pretty chilly day with a chance of rain, but to the grace of God that rain never came down. It was an allaround pretty day and the temperature rose up to about 75 degrees. What’s better than sunny and 75? We started out this pretty day with a memorable grand entry. We had the final region 9 grand entry for the seniors. They got to ride in and be recognized for their accomplishments, as well as giving thanks

HAILEY BRUENING

to their parents. We then had some great runs throughout the day and our seniors were really dominating the scene. In breakaway, senior Katie Allen, won with a 2.430. In goat tying, senior Hailey Bruening from Huntsville, won the goat tying, tying a 6.730. Dylan Chandler SENIOR TRUCK PUSH then won the bareback with a score of 67 and Kyler Cole won the saddle bronc with a score of 68. In steer wrestling Luke Yargo threw down a steer with a winning time of 6.120. Then in team roping Lane Ardoin from Marquez and Hayden Rasco from Gause, won the team roping with a fast time of 5.490. These seniors really stepped up their game for BOUDREAUX CAMPBELL the final Region 9 rodeo of their high school career. We also had a few underclassmen win their event too. Freshman, Lyndie Dunn won the pole bending running a 20.702. Sophomores, Falcon McConnell and Parker McCown shared a win in the bull riding with a score of 73. Kelsie Winfrey a junior from New Waverly won the barrel racing with a time of 17.480 and Spin Edwards, also a junior, won the tie town, tying a fast time of 10.180. We had famous Henson Dodge Truck Push, where each class of rodeo contestants compete to see who can push the truck across the finish line first. It was the freshman against the sophomores in the first heat and the juniors against the seniors in the second. It was a hard fought battle for the win, but the seniors finally pulled out with a win. Congratulations to the senior class who will be representing Region 9 at the high school finals.

After the rodeo we had our finals banquet and what fun that was. We were served some great BBQ and got to mingle with our family and friends. Awards were given out to all of our sponsors, jackets to all the contestants, and then blankets to all the seniors. Then there were the top 10 buckles given to those competitors advancing to state. The event leaders got a saddle for their event. Riley Webb was the number one tiedown roper for the year. Lane Ardoin and Hayden Rasco won the heading and heeling. Luke Yargo won the steer wrestling. Colby Winfrey won the saddle bronc. Whitney Anderson won reigning cow horse. Aly Ghormley won the pole bending. Morgan Starns won girls cutting. Parker McCown won the bull riding. Colton Currie won boys cutting. Kelsie Winfrey won the barrel racing. Dylan Chandler won the bareback. Hailey Bruening won the goat tying and Jessica Garrett won the breakaway. The title of Rookie All-Around Cowgirl was awarded to Aly Ghormley form Madisonville and Rookie All-Around Cowboy was won by Riley Webb from Buffalo. Tacy Webb, a senior from Midway, won the girls all-around, participating in barrels, breakaway, cutting, goat tying, and pole bending. Spur Luke, a sophomore from Willis, won the boys all-around title. He participates in boys cutting, team roping, and tiedown. We also said hello to the new officer team. Moving from vice president to president was Spin Edwards. Jessica Garrett, our champion breakaway roper, won the title of vice president and freshman, Lyndie Dunn was awarded the spot of secretary. Mattie Sheffield would also continue to be our Region 9 Queen along with Emalee Hoffmann as the Ariat Reporter. We are excited for a new year of High School Rodeo

PERFORMANCE REPORT

DON’T BLINK

By BROOKE

I

BOILES– ARIAT Performance Reporter

'm sure many of you like to read original work, and that is exactly what I am about to give you. This hasn't been done on many instances but it being that I have been writing for Region X in the Extreme Team Newspaper for the past three years of my 4 years with high school rodeo, I owe a final farewell to all of those who have stood behind me every step of the way. When my journey with high school rodeo started as a 14 year old little girl who had just begun rodeoing that very year of my freshman year, I lacked confidence on many levels. The friends and the bonds that I made

helped to build me up run by run, encounter by encounter in a way I'm sure they did not even realize they were doing it. The graduating group of 2013 is what really helped sparked and begin my love for these region rodeos. I came in not hardly knowing a single soul, but shortly after was confronted with friendships that remain to this day, and with those friendship came a love and support from each and everyone of their parents as well that I am so grateful for. Little did I know, that number of friendships and family's I feel a part of would only grow throughout my years. As the years went on and I set my goals, I was able to qualify for the State Finals all four of my years competing, and got to go in each of my events I competed in at one point or another; team roping, breakaway, and goat tying. I am thankful to have been able to experience such a memorable time with those I have come to consider family. Moving out and moving on to attend Sam Houston State University is going to be a tough change. I have been fortunate enough to come from a family that has been so quick to be there for whatever I may need to help me to progress and grow as a person and competitor. None of this lifestyle I live would be possible without the help of my parents, Charlie and Stacey, and my brothers Blake and Booger and of course my savior Jesus Christ. High school rodeo has taught me a countless amount of lessons that I will carry with me on a day to day basis to be successful in the crazy beautiful thing we call life. I want to thank not only high school rodeo but the sport of rodeo for helping me to learn the traits that I would like to portray in my life no matter the situation I am faced with. It has also helped me to realize extraordinary is only reached by stepping outside of your comfort zone and going out on a limb. If I could give you one piece of advice for competing, it would be to not be afraid to fail, because once you are done you are done. There are no reruns left. Let everything hang out in each and every run. Let everything hang out in each and everything you do in this life so that when you get to the end of the road you can look back and have zero regrets. Thank you all again from the bottom of my heart for each and every memory. Don't blink, because you're gonna miss this.

WHO IS GOING TO PUT ON THE RODEOS?

R

by Makenna Shook, TJHRA Region VII

odeo is one of the oldest sports in the United States. The first rodeo was held in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1847. It is a sport that developed from cowboys competing against each other showing their talents. It evolved from each stating they were better than the other. You don’t have to count on team mates, but you and your horse or you, your horse and the livestock that you have drawn to compete on. I am blessed to have been able to compete in the sport that I love since I was 2 years old. My dad serves on various boards for several rodeo associations so I see first-hand the time and dedication it takes to make the rodeos successful and run smoothly. I want to thank every parent who supports their children and hauls them to the rodeos. I want to thank every parent who has set a barrel or pole or pulled a barrier to make a rodeo go faster. I also want to thank all of the rodeo secretaries for going above and beyond and spend countless hours doing the books, entering contestants and running the rodeos. Rodeo is one of the unique sports where for the most part the parents are the ones that put them on. If you had to pay every position out there it would be impossible for the sport to continue. Even when you get to the amateur and pro level for a large part the rodeos are put on by committeemen and volunteers. For the longest time you had youth rodeos to compete at and when you were old enough you could finally go to high school rodeos where the best in the state compete and progress to Nationals. Now you have the Jr. High Association that helps you get ready for high school. I have met so many great people

along the way that spend countless hours annually to provide us with a great association. I want to challenge every parent and kid to help out where they can when possible. When we go to the rodeos you normally see the same people doing all of the work. It makes me nervous that some of the associations that host certain rodeos will quit doing them due to the lack of help and support they get from their members. There comes a day when those that have put the rodeos on for years move on and someone has to step up and take their place. Let’s all do our part to keep the sport of rodeo thriving.

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS!

W

by Kate McNeill, TJHRA Region VIII

e took care of business in Region 8 this rodeo season and are looking forward to the State Finals in May. This year was filled with lots of great times shared through exciting rodeos with tough competition and fine sportsmanship. Thankfully, all our contestants wrapped up the year safe and sound! We sure appreciate all the family, friends and fans that pitched in with silent auction donations, bidding, and cash donations, to help recognize our outstanding individuals with superb awards during our awards ceremony in February. The Parent Rodeo, where our moms and dads earned money competing in Barrels, Poles, and Goat Tying, may not be the most profitable, but it sure is fun to watch those who tend to offer us the most “advice” try to go at it themselves. I must admit, some of them impressed us quite a bit and the others…well they gave us a pretty good laugh! The top ten contestants in each event will be riding into state with some really nice buckles, saddles, and JORDAN JANUARY

tack thanks to Tres Rios, Twisted Tack and Slone Saddles! Our All Around Rookie Cowgirl and Barrel Racing Champion, Rainey Skelton, really rocked it! When asked how her year went she said, “I'd like to thank all the directors and all who were so nice and helped put it on. I love region 8 so much I had so much fun this year!” She is excited and looking forward to this year's state finals. Our Region 8 All Around Boys Champion was Tres Mendietta. In addition to the All Around title, he also was the Team Roping, Ribbon Roping and Bull Riding Champion. Tres made quite an impact this year. Our All Around Cowgirl and Pole Bending Champion was Sadie Thibodeaux. Sadie was on fire all year long! Other event champions were Braedon Weaver in the Tiedown, Tres Mendietta and Alejandro Gonzalez in the Team Roping, Emily Bednorz in the Ribbon Running, Shyanne Baurle in Girl’s Goat Tying, Jordan January in Girl’s Breakaway, Bill Sciba in the Chute Dogging, Alejandro Gonzalez in Boy’s Goat Tying, and Rymond Haby in Boy’s Breakaway. Region 8 cultivated some really good cowboys and cowgirls this year. Rodeo may not be the most popular sport among teenagers these days, but I think we’d all agree it is by far the best. We’d be hardpressed to find this good of time doing anything else. The lifelong
