s we wrap up the end of the year with nationals I want to give everyone a new challenge for the next year. No I'm not talking a "Kylie Jenner lip challenge" or a "black and white challenge" but more of a better yourself challenge. As the new year begins I want everyone to push the limits and get out of your comfort zone. That may mean get out and talk to as many people as you can about the thsra and region 1 rodeo organization or it may mean lifting weights and pushing yourself that extra mile to make yourself better. Just better yourself. Be the person everyone wants to be around. Now I'm not saying dedicate yourself to being social. You also need to better yourself in the arena. Whether your winning every rodeo or not there is always room for improvement. Practice everyday like your going to nationals tomorrow and before you know it that's where you'll be. Like Trevor Brazile says "Most competitors never realize what their true potential is don't sell yourself short." If your a roper you understand; if you don't drop a coil what happens? Your rope more then likely won't go the full length to get over his head. If

you sit down during your delivery usually your just going to hit that calf in the back of the head or just top knot it. Both these ways you are selling yourself short. Your don't let go of that coil and you don't give that rope the opportunity to reach its full length. If you sit down you don't give your arm a fair shot to completely deliver. If your a saddle bronc rider, what happens if you pull instead of lift on your rein? Your probably going to get bucked off. If your a barrel racer or a pole bender, what happens if you check a little to early? You more then likely are going to hit a barrel or pole. If you don't open yourself up and drop that extra coil, lift that extra amount, or let your horse run a little longer, you sell yourself short and therefore you won't reach your full potential. I challenge everyone as our rodeo season starts, start working now to reach your full potential and step out of your mentality you have right now. Everyone know the "don't judge challenge" and the "no makeup challenge" so here's the "better yourself challenge".

s Region II is gearing up for the new year, we are saying goodbye to our 2015 National High School Finals Rodeo, summer fun, and running all over creation to make as many rodeos as possible! Even though we are saying goodbye to these things, we are also looking forward to the new adventures that

come along with the upcoming season. With lots of new members coming in this year, the Region II rodeos are bound to be filled with lots of new friendship and stiff competition. This year at the 2015 National High School Finals Rodeo, Region II came wearing their game faces. Contestants Blaise Freeman and Katy Armstrong ended up in the top 15 in the nation in their respective events. Recent graduate, Avery Weatherman dominated over the summer, winning all the rounds at the 2015 Texas High School Finals Rodeo then moving on to win two of the rounds at the 2015 National High School Finals Rodeo to become the 2015 National Champion Pole Bender. When speaking to Avery about her big win she said, “It was really an honor to win the national title due to the fact that you are competing against every state. I wouldn’t really say that nationals is tougher than state finals, even though Texas didn’t win nationals as a team I got to prove that the toughest pole benders do come from Texas!” Overall, Region II, as well as the state of Texas, was greatly represented this year in Rocksprings. Many of our members spend the summers rodeoing and relaxing in the summer sun. Sydney Stephens, a sophomore in Region II spent her summer rodeoing and having fun at the beach and church camp. When asked what she was looking forward to in the new year she said, “ I am looking forward to progressing in the events that I do and making new friends.” Another contestant from Region II, Brendan Bennett, is an incoming freshmen this year. He said over the summer that he has been practicing a lot to make sure his horses are working to to ensure a successful first year in high school. When Brendan was asked what he was most excited for in the upcoming season he said, “ I have a good partner in the team roping this year and I SYDNEY STEPHENS ROPING BREAKAWAY am just really excited about

my first year in high school!” Practice is the key to success in the sport of rodeo, that is why many of our members are working harder than ever to be successful in the new season. This year we have lots of new members coming in which means lots of solid competitors. When student president Swaize Lee was asked what she thought the competition would be like this year she responded, “I believe it will be as tough as ever. Region II has some of the toughest cowboys and cowgirls around and I can expect them to show it.” She also added, “ I think the incoming freshmen will for sure raise the level of competition. I think they will be ready to show what they can do and make a name for themselves. I think all of the upperclassmen should stay on their toes and be ready for some tough competition.” We are enthusiastic to see what the 2015-2016 season of rodeos has in store. Region II is ready to kick off a great year of rodeo. So we say goodbye to the summer and say hello to a whole new generation. This year in Region II we are ready to strive towards bigger and better goals and set records. So good luck Region II, in all that you do.

I would like to start by saying congratulations to Region III for bringing home the win at the state finals in both the Jr. high and high school divisions. fter a long summer break, our hands are once again finding the tasks that we have set them to. The 2015-2016 rodeo season is about to be in full swing, and whether your summer was spent in the practice pen, the rodeo arena, or even on a beach somewhere, I know that all of us are prepared to come back and make this year in Region IV the best one yet. Summertime in Texas is an enigma to most. School is out, the days are long, but the heat can stand in the way a lot of days. For most, practice is either done early in the morning or late into the night. Summer is a time committed to improvement, it's a time of transition. Graduating, moving up into high school, or even moving into a new age group in an association. Summer is a time to relax and readjust, as well as prepare for the season to come. Now that summer is over, all of that preparation and dedication is about to be shown off throughout the year. Even though the year

seems to fly by when you reach the end, in reality it's a long 8 months. It's stressful, and it's hard, but in the end it's worth it all. Keep that in mind as we go into this season. Make goals for yourself, and strive to accomplish them. Have fun as you try to achieve those goals, and know that absolutely nothing is impossible with a good attitude and a willing spirit. If things don't work out as you might have planned, then always keep looking towards the future. There will always be more rodeos to enter, and there will always be opportunities to turn things around. Just remember that, "He who kneels before God can stand before anything." And it will all work out in the end.

Howdy! My name is Cullen Eppright and I am fortunate enough to be able to serve as the 2015-16 THSRA President. I am the son of David & Tonya Eppright, and we reside on a ranch near Gonzales, TX. I am a sophomore at Gonzales High School. Most important, I am a calf roper from the sizzlinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Region 6. With the Texas Junior High State Finals being held 15 minutes from my house, and being able to watch the great competition before I could compete, I have always had an admiration of the THSRA & TJHRA. With the encouragement of former THSRA & TJHRA Student Officers, and by the support of the members, I was elected the 2012-13 TJHRA Vice President. During that year, I felt the need to become even more involved, and the next year, 2013-14, I was elected to the positions of TJHRA Region 6 President, TJHRA State President, and NHSRA Junior High Division National President. During all of this, I managed to qualify for the TJHRA State Finals all three years and made the short round two years. I also qualified for THSRA State Finals in calf roping last year. When I am not busy in the practice pen or trying to lead our organization, I am working out at Polemistis CrossFit, taking pictures, fishing, or alligator hunting. After high school, I plan to attend Texas A&M University majoring Agricultural Leadership & Development with a minor in Marketing. I want to be the voice of the members to try to make the best high school organization in Texas even better, so please contact me with any questions or suggestions you may have; my information is on the website. ing myself will be realizing that this great experience is almost over. My advice to everyone is enjoy the ride and savor every moment because tomorrow is not guaranteed. ey Region 6, it’s that time of year again! Time to reunite with the one and only JB Wells Arena, and time to eat as much Whataburger in one weekend as possible! Whether you’re running down the alley, exploding

out of the box, or spurring out of the chute, we are all there to have good times with good stock and even better people. Team Roper Jesse Hines holds himself to high standards, this year he’s got his eyes on a National Finals buckle! Over this summer, he has had the luxury of working with some highly skilled individuals to present a smoother delivery in the arena. Since we all get about the same 90 day period of summer, we all have the same advantages as the other. September will show who really used their time wisely! The first rodeo is always the roughest, no matter if you’re a rookie or an old-timer; we’ve all got to give that first impression all over again. Things may not go as planned, but it’s important to show up having that million dollar attitude rodeo kids are known for. Rodeo isn’t just about beating everybody; it’s about making lifelong memories and helping others become the best they can be too. Whether you listen to some hardcore rap on the

way to each rodeo, wrack your brain and go through a perfect run in your mind, or take a nap the whole way; we all have our weird rituals to get our heads in the game. Region 6 has some of the toughest competition, and each rodeo is intimidating to compete at. Even if it is the beginning of a new season, everyone has their goals set on state finals. Playing the game of rodeo requires serious skill, at least if you want to win. Nothing is better than coming home with a check because at the end of the day when the work gets done, you can see the results. All around cowgirl Hayley Tieken is ready to strive harder this season, since summer has given her more free time to be putting down solid hours in the saddle. The advantages of competing all around include not putting all your eggs into one basket and having your points spread out in an extra effort to make that trip to Abilene next summer. As the days get shorter and the air grows cooler, the excitement grows in and around Gonzales. Weekends get busier with more and more competitors at the practice pen, and more opportunities arise to sharpen our skills. Get out there and work like a dog and think like a boss, because you can never return back to the very moment you are living in now. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got it in us, so as Chris LeDoux once said, saddle up and follow your dreams.

n January we all say" new year new me" we talk about all the great changes were going to make in our lives and we are so motivated. Yet about a week or two later most people are back to their old "bad habits". This is just like a new school year we get our new cute clothes and were so excited to catch up with our friends from school yet by about the second day of school we’re counting down the days until summer once again,but school is almost here whether we like it or not. For some it's senior year and you're ready to get out and for others it's your freshmen year the "scarry" year. Here at Region VII we have a big new change going on this year! We will be getting a new secretary it's going to be different yet great! Mrs. Dollery has been the secretary for our region for 13 years. Over the last 13 years she's gone above and beyond as our secretary for region VII. She's been a huge asset to our region for a long time and it's sad to see her go but she will always be a part of region VII . Now Mrs. Boettcher will taking over as our new secretary. Being a rodeo secretary isn't anything new for Mrs.Boettcher she's been involved in rodeo and High School

Rodeo for many years. She's been a secretary for other High School regions before and her sons are involved in High School and Junior High Rodeo. Also you can't for get her brother Mr. Turtle Powell a world champion and 10 time NFR qualifier. This might not be such a scary change after all! So as you start your "New Year" focus on all the positive things even though change can be scary. New people can bring new ideas, inspiring you to step up your game a person in and out of the arena. Good luck to everyone this year with your new challenges and changes!

PERFORMANCE REPORT Memories and Friends to be Made

ow!!!! It’s so hard to believe another rodeo season is about to start. For some of us this means a new start in High School rodeo as freshman and others its means our last year as seniors. Either way it’s another year of amazing memories and great friendships to be made. If you ever ask a child, friend or parent what they love most about high school rodeo 9 times out of 10 they will say lifelong friendships that were made. It’s one big family that’s always there for you. Region VIII is always looking for ways to show their support especially when it comes to graduating seniors. All season long we raise funds to help with prizes and scholarships. The past few years we were able to give our seniors more than $32,000 in college scholarships. They say it takes a village but at Region VIII it’s all about the family. Our rodeo family comes together at each rodeo and hosts silent auctions that bring in more than $2,000 at each of put 12 rodeos. We alternate between the girls and boys and make it somewhat of a competition. Who doesn’t like a

little competition? You can always tell whose turn it is to bring silent auction items. Tables are filled with cookies, jewelry, nice tack, fruit trays, and picture frames, and the next month covered with ropes, gloves, saddle pads, and jerk lines. I’m sure you can figure out which month was the girls’ and which was the boys’. 100% of the proceeds go towards our year end prizes and college scholarships. We are never happy to see our seniors go but we wish them the best as they embark on their new journey as college students. Some will be moving away from home and other might stay close to home. Either way the new chapter in their life is sure to be a great one. We all know Junior High is just as tough as High School rodeo, which means more great competition. We couldn’t be more excited to see what group of talented contestants we have this year. They could potentially represent us at the Texas High School Rodeo State Finals and Nationals. I remember finishing my Junior High year and coming into High School rodeo thinking, “how am I going to get through this? There are so many talented riders here.” I can bet that most of the upcoming freshmen are thinking the same thing, so here’s is a little advice. Don’t be nervous about starting High School rodeo, it’s not hard to compete with the some best contestants if you work hard and stay determined. There will always be someone that’s better, smarter or faster than you no matter where you go but you are right where you need to be at that moment. Don’t let anything get you down. Don’t let yourself think negative thoughts. Another thing that has helped me throughout high school rodeo is not worrying about anyone else’s run. I don’t sit and listen to the times being announced or about what I have to run to possibly win. I just saddle my horse, warm up, tell my fellow contestants good luck, and get myself ready to make the best run I can. That’s all you can do, make the best run that you can. If someone beats you, be happy for them; tell them they did a good job. Never be unsupportive or a bad sport. That’s never a good look for anyone. If you want it bad enough and you work hard the possibilities are endless. Set goals for each season or even each rodeo and stay focused. Region VIII also has some of the best parents, volunteers and board members ever. If you ever need help in the arena there is always someone there don’t ever be afraid to ask. All in all, I am excited to welcome the incoming freshman and wish our graduating seniors the best of luck in college. With new talent coming into our Region I look forward to making new friends, and make the best of my senior year. In the words of Vince Lombardo “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.”

he saying “Let’s Rodeo” is more than just a phrase on a bumper sticker. There are so many factors that play into actually being ready to rodeo. Do you have your saddle oiled and ready to go? Have you found the right bit for your horse? Is your horse up to date on its coggins and shots? Are your horse’s feet done and shod? Have you turned in your paperwork and paid your entry fees? This is just a small portion of what has to be done to make sure you are rodeo ready. Kenna Kaminski, incoming senior and state qualifier in barrels and poles has been getting ready all summer for another great year in Region IX. Kenna says, “I get up early every morning and exercise my horses. I usually ride them four to five days a week, even though it’s always so hot. I also take them swimming once a week to keep them in shape.” Kenna has also been competing at various barrel races and rodeos this summer; the Wrapn3 barrel racing series being her main one. Being mentally prepared is essential for you to be successful during your rodeo season. A few ways to mentally prepare yourself are to get

plenty of rest, exercise and to take care of your school work on time. Visualizing your perfect run or ride, and then replaying it over in your head, will also keep you focused on what you need to do. Getting projects completed on time and not at the midnight hour will help keep you focused. Work to surround yourself with positive influences that motivate you, not with those who keep you distracted. You are your biggest competitor so mental focus is crucial to preforming at your best. Proof of the preparedness can be found in the group that qualified for Nationals this year. Our Region IX National Qualifiers were: Bull Riding - Texas State Champion, Boudreaux Campbell and Tristan Mize; Boys Cutting - Spur Luke and Colton Currie; Steer Wrestling - Texas State Champion, Kayne Partin; Pole Bending - Reserve State Champion, Pamela Henderson. of our national qualifiers ended up in in the top 20 of the first go-round. Graduating senior Kayne Partin ended up 18th in steer wrestling with an 11.18 sec run and Tristan Mize with a score of 85 was 1st in bull riding. Tristan Mize then ended up 9th in the overall average for Bull Riding. All six of the Region IX Texas team worked very hard and diligently prepared to get to nationals and we are all very proud of all their commitment and achievement. National Boys Cutting qualifier Spur Luke, from Willis, had to get prepared for Wyoming. To get prepared, Spur said, “I started riding a new horse after state. I went to a show in Belton on him and practiced penning and cutting cows at my trainer’s house.” Luke said, “I had a bad first go but we ended up second in the second performance and 43rd overall.” Spur said he had a great time and felt very blessed by the whole experience. All successful competitors in rodeo must be prepared mentally and physically. Being a winner not only means being good at your event, but being focused and ready to compete. If you are prepared and organized, you will relieve any unnecessary stresses on yourself and, not to mention your parents. Our first rodeo is September 20th in Crockett, so let’s get that paperwork in on time, get that truck and trailer ready to go, but most off all be ready to be better than you were yesterday. So ask yourself, “Am I rodeo ready for the 2015-2016 Texas High School Rodeo Season?” Now, Let’s Rodeo! s the dust is dying down from the Summer Rodeos and our contestants are focusing on future region, state, and national titles to be won, we would like to congratulate those contestant of region X who went on and fought the good fight at Nationals. The State Champion Team Ropers Slade Townsend and McCray Profili ended up laying down three runs good enough to place them eighth in the average. Chantz Webster laid down a smoking calf run to place him second place in the second round. In the short round, barrel racer Kambria McDougal, ran a 17.189 which happened to be the fastest run of the entire week, which helped place her third place in the average. In other barrel racing news, the seventeen year old, soon to be senior at Georgetown High School, Ava Antolik is accomplishing big things! Ava recently won the barrel racing at the 2015 Texas High School Rodeo State Finals. She capitalized on her win by placing fourth

in the first round, second in the second round, and then going on to make a beautiful run to place her second in the short go, and first in the average. She is a three time state qualifier, and a first time national qualifier to where she then went on to qualify for the short round. Ava has competed in Region X for High School Rodeo and finished up winning the year end for the barrel racing this year. In 2014 she went along to qualify for the CPRA finals and finished up second in the average. You may have seen Ava at the Glen Rose American qualifier where she ended up eleventh, or finishing fifth in November at the Elite Extravaganza Barrel Race. You'll find Ava running her seven year old horse Sixshootin Sonofaguy or "gunner," who was trained by Jacque Woolman, majority of the places she goes. She has owned Gunner now for

about 3 years. She states, "He was a 4 year old when we got him and was still kind of figuring things out. He has now matured and grown a lot since then. He has a huge ego and is rather full of himself." Along with Gunner, Ava has a 5 year old back up horse; bugs blue blazes, trained by Tyler Davis who is beginning to do really well. When asking Ava what the most important part of rodeo is to her, she responded saying, "The most important part is the incredible bonds that are forged between the horses and riders. We build total trust, and dedication towards the time and effort it takes to win." The proof on Ava's dedication is in her wins, because unlike many, she doesn't come from a rodeo family. She states it's been really hard over the years to have to learn and figure things out on her own. "I definitely wouldn’t be the rider I am today if it weren’t for Jacque Woolman and all the other various farriers, vets, and horse people that took time out of their lives to show me the ropes and everything." Ava plans to attend college and compete in college rodeo once out of high school and then soon after try towards getting her pro card to pro rodeo. We are eager to see the progress that was made from last years rodeos along with the new faces Region X is gaining here at the first rodeo September 19th and 20th!

elcome to this year's West Texas Fair & Rodeo! The theme for 2015 is "Making Memories". The old fashioned county fair features thrills and spills all packed into ten full days of fun and activities, including a parade, carnival, livestock shows, PRCA rodeo, and much more! The annual event begins the 1st Thursday after Labor Day and all the events except the parade are held at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene, Texas. Sneak or Peek Night is Thursday, September 10, 2015 - 'Ride all the Carnival Rides for One Price'! Come enjoy a phelora of delicious food, including fair favorites such as roasted corn and funnel cakes! The Commercial Vendors showcase their wares in the Display Building daily from 1:00 PM to 11:00 PM. The Creative Arts are displayed in the Round Building and Modern Living Mall. All rides, food vendors and exhibits are open from September 11 through September 19, 2015. Browse through a barn full of some of the best livestock from across Texas, offering all kinds of livestock shows from poultry, lamb, llama, horse, cattle and other livestock events, and come root

ear Junior High Contestants and Families: The Executive Board and State Directors would like to first say we are VERY PROUD of our 2015 National Team. The Texas Girls were named the National Champions this year at the finals. The boys and the whole team did not do to bad either. We ended up third overall and third place in the boys team. We did have a National Champion Bull Rider â&#x20AC;&#x201C; congratulations to Kyle McDaniel for winning the 2015 title. Next year we will be moving venues for Nationals, we will be moving to Lebanon, TN, so that is something to look forward too. I hear it is not to far from Nashville, so that should give everyone something to look forward to and start setting those goals now. I can say 2015-16 are looking to be a new adventure for many things, new location for the National Finals and also a new marketing director who will be focusing on the growth of Junior High. Her name is Maci Meyer and she has joined the TJHRA board to help promote the sport of Junior High Rodeo to new people that will in turn give you all something to brag about that you are a part of a great organization. I have known Maci for several years, she grew up with my boys while they were youth rodeoing and I am very excited about working with her. I am also starting the year out differently this year, this is the first time in thirteen years I am not hustling around getting a region together. The beginning of the rodeo season is VERY BUSY for the rodeo secretaries. Getting all the paper work right, entering all the members, new back numbers, and getting the paperwork you all need for the year. If you have ever started a rodeo season you know it is a lot of man hours and for many of them they are doing this after they have put in a full days of work. So, if you need to ask your rodeo secretary something and she is not as fast as you think she should be, please bear with her while she gets that first rodeo under way. Sometimes instead of calling a quick text or an email seems to be better. If you are having trouble reaching your secretary and need a question answered please do not hesitate to contact me, if I do not know the answer I will find it. I hope everyone is gearing up for a great rodeo season and setting your goals to do the best you possibly can. I hope to see you all down the road soon.

REGION I:

THE START OF SOMETHING NEW

he start of the new rodeo season is an exciting time. Region I has a lot of new things: a new secretary, new competitors, and new champions to be crowned. In Region 1 we have many new members joining us this year, and they are ready to rodeo. There is also another By KATE JOHNSON – Region I very important person joining our region this year, Debra Dorenkamp. She replaces Mikey Duggan who did a wonderful job for over ten years as secretary. While we will miss Mikey, we welcome Debra to our rodeo family.

We have several kids to look out for this year from Region 1. Jade Kenney is a big competitor in the Breakaway Roping and the All Around. At the National Junior High Rodeo Finals in Des Moines, Iowa, Jade was 6th in the Girls’ Breakaway. Dawson (Sticky) Gleaves is another strong competitor coming back this year. Dawson made it to Nationals in all the rough stock events and was 4th in Bull Riding and 18th in Steer Riding. Hayden Powell is one to look for in the Boys’ Breakaway. Hayden finished 9th in the nation this year in the breakaway event. Others to watch include Gracie Tucker, Cole Franks, Korbin Rice, Brock Corman, Tyler Espenson, Kross Hiatt, and many more. We are excited to start the 2015-2016 rodeo season when we kick off in Dalhart,Texas on September 12.We can’t wait! Region I will have some fierce competition, but everyone one is pumped to see what the year has in store for us.

HIT THE ROAD AND SEE YA AT THE RODEOS

would like to introduce myself to Region 2 and tell you a little about my family. My name is Kelly Wood and I have 5 children and 9 grandchildren. Our sons competed in Texas High School rodeo and one that went to Nationals in Saddle Bronc riding. We still have one daughter in High School and she competes in all events. We have one that just graduated and she went to Nationals her sophomore year and won Breakaway. So rodeo and our faith is a big part of our family. We hope to pass this love on to our grandchildren. We feel that rodeo is a great way to learn life’s lessons. I am proud to be a secretary for Region 2 and hope to make this year great for all the members in this great sport of rodeo. I would like to thank the board for giving me this honor to serve as Junior

High secretary. I encourage each one to contact me if you need answers or concerns. I feel if we all work together as a team then we will have a smooth year. Working together benefits the kids and we are in this for our kids. We need to remember that all the directors are volunteers and be grateful that they are willing to give many hours to this association and pat them on the back for a job well done. I want to take this opportunity to thank Jody McElroy for being a great friend and teacher. She is a great secretary for Region 2 and works hard to make the region a great one. I know that she will guide me and help me to make this a smooth transition. Jody loves the kids and we all love her. Thanks for everyone’s support!
