State Finals Wrap Up 2019 By EMERY MASK
R
– Performance Reporter
egion One had remarkable weeks in both Abilene and Gonzales this year! With all of the fierce competition there were many competitors who stood out
from our region and are on their way to Huron and Rock Springs. With seventeen spectacular students total between both the jr. high and high school levels, Region One and Texas are definitely going to be well represented! The six students representing our region at the high school finals are Gus Gaillard, Emery Mask, Sierra Jameson, Kater Tate, Bonner Voss, and Jake Baca. And the nine students representing us at jr. high are Kasidy Russell, Benny Proffitt, Clayton Anderson, Tate Thompson, Braxton Hughes, Ridley Timberlake, Rye Reynolds, Carson Elliot, and Jaylee Lane. I had

Also, on her way to South Dakota is Ridley Timberlake, an eighthgrader with a fierce drive for competition. Ridley is eager to prove to herself that she deserves to be there and to do so she is going to practice like it is just another rodeo and give it everything she has. To all of the national qualifiers: congratulations, good luck, and safe travels!

the opportunity to speak with some of these extraordinary athletes about various topics. From their favorite things at state to what they are most excited for at nationals and plenty of other subjects in between. Sierra Jameson has many stops before she attends Texas A&M this coming fall, one of those stops includes Wyoming where Sierra hopes for her senior year, she can bring home both an individual national title as well as help Texas earn another team title. Her goal leading up to the shoot is to go in prepared and practiced and to compete to the best of her ability! Gus Gaillard, a freshman who has proven himself in the jr. high ranks, gets a chance to expand his remarkable reputation into high school in the saddle bronc riding. Gus said that he is excited to get to represent team Texas and hopes that he makes Region One proud while doing what he loves. His plans and preparation for nationals include going to as many rodeos as he can and practicing every day so that he can be at the top of his game when he arrives in Wyoming. Kasidy Russell is a sixth-grader, whose rookie year was one for the books. She accomplished many of her goals this year and says that she gives all the glory to God and is extremely grateful for the opportunity to go to nationals. Kasidy said her strategy going into Huron is to practice like she has never won and perform like she has never lost. Rye Reynolds is another fantastic jr. high contestant on his way to Huron. He is in his third and final year of jr. high rodeos and is ready to compete in high school next year. When Rye found out he had qualified for nationals he was extremely thrilled and thankful for being able to compete to the best of his abilities and accomplish a huge goal of his.

hat a week state finals was for Region III! So many kids from our region did well! One thing that stuck out to me was the sportmanship within our Region III kids at state finals. Noah Spivey; Steer wrestler from Haslet, Texas, had his horse come up lame at the start of the week. Not knowing how his horse would be by the time of his first performance, he needed another mount. Cole Walker, another steer wrestler from region 3, willingly offered his horse, Jet, up for Noah to run the entire week. “When I showed up for the short go I was super nervous and everyone could tell, especially Jet. He threw a little fit and I knew I had to do something to get the nerves out so I took a deep breath and asked god to help take the nerves away. I calmed down and backed in the box for the 2nd time. I nodded my head with a clear mind and just did what I needed to do to win” said by Noah Spivey about his winning short go run. Noah placed 5th in the first go, 11th in the second go, won the short round. He ended up 4th in the state to punch his ticket to Rock Springs, Wyoming! “I was completely and utterly surprised I made nationals on a borrowed horse, I didn’t go into it thinking I even had a shot”. He said he’s getting ready for nationals by “practicing as much as I can, doing everything I can to keep my
SPORTSMANSHIP mental game sharp by talking to people who have been there and done it. I’m just going into it with faith that God will be with me through my runs”. Noah wanted to say a big thanks to the Walker family for “having no second thoughts about letting me ride their horse when mine came up lame.” Also a huge thanks to the Harmon family for “offering up their horse for me to ride at nationals!” I don’t know another region that has such great sportsmanship as region 3! Congratulations to all the region 3 high school kids headed to nationals including Cole Franks, Jade Barrett, Noah Spivey, Trevor Hale, Shad Mayfield, Ryann Packard, Clay Dukes, and Sassy Wilson! Also a big congratulations to the junior high kids from region 3 who are headed to Junior nationals! Caleb Lewis, Kreece Dearing and Payton Hicks, Tater Jordan and Emily Ward, Kyler Kanady and Cauy Hartmann, and Lane Cooper!

PERFORMANCE REPORT
Region IV Rocks
A
By Lilly Eakes – Performance Reporter
s we wrap up the 2018-2019 season, Region IV has had an outstanding year! As a region we are so blessed to have people like Brent Chadwick, Tina Braden, stock contractors, parents, and our region officers to guide and help us and have our rodeos run smoothly. We couldn’t do what we do as contestants without you and we are so thankful for each of you! We started the summer off with a bang in Gonzales, at the TJHRA state finals. Vie Vie Blanchard was crowned as the new Miss TJHRA Princess. She says she is so excited to fill this role for the 2019-20 season and that she can’t wait to meet all the amazing people along the way! She represented our region well as the Region IV Princess and we can’t wait to see what she accomplishes in this new role. On Saturday we had 10 JH members compete in the short-go! In the speed events we had Kate Neil for poles, Dillon Grote in the boys goat tying, and Laney Jo Almond in the girls goat tying. In the roping events we had Jhett Akins and Brayden Morris in the Boys Breakaway. Mary Beth Beam made it in the Girls Breakaway,
Brayden Morris and Jake Murray made it in the team roping. In Ribbon Roping we had Maddie Smith and Cole Roberts. For Roughstock we had Brayden Morris in the Jr. Bulls. We sent Riley Conclasure in Barrels, and in the Boys Breakaway Jhett Akins to South Dakota to compete for a National Title. We wish them the best of luck! At the THSRA state finals we were definitely there on a mission. Winning the tug-o-war and the Bloomer trailer for the second year in a row! Congratulations to the Chadwick family; we know you will enjoy the new trailer and it couldn’t have happened to a more deserving family. We sent quite a few to the short round including Ashley Davis in the Girls Goat Tying, Makenzie Mayes and Tera Rozell in the barrel racing, and Kolton Greene and Latham Dickson in the Team Roping. Ellie Schreck also made the short and ended up Reserve State Champion for girls cutting! This year we had one of competitors pull her ACL in the first round of goat tying Monday morning. With the help of friends, family, and the excellent medical staff she was able to still rope both of her BAW calves. She ended up 4th in the second round, with a smoking 2.20 seconds. Jesse Young; we are so proud of you and hope you get to feeling better and that you heal quickly!
ELLIE SCHRECK photo by Jennings
This year Region IV said goodbye to 21 Seniors as they competed in the last THSRA of their career in Abilene. They were a part of our region family and we hate to see them go. We hope that you all have an amazing summer as you begin to prepare for college. May you always know you have a family at Region IV and we believe that you will do great things in life! I hope that you all have had an amazing year and safe travels to the Texas Nationals Team, Good luck!

egion V was well represented by all the outstanding athletes at the 2019 THSRA State Finals. We finished out the two long go’s sending 25 contestants to the short go! That’s an awesome accomplishment that Region V should be super proud of. Just to make it to the short go is an achievement in the state of Texas, but to send that many athletes into the final round of such tough competition is something to admire. It was a tough go on Saturday
to complete the 2019 State Finals and Region V finished very strong. We came out on top with three state champions, five reserve state champions, and overall 11 national qualifiers! Senior, Reagan Davis, not only claimed the state championship in pole bending for the 2nd time in her rodeo career, but she now holds the Girl’s All Around title for 2019. With pole bending in mind, Region V claimed three of the four spots for Nationals. Reagan Davis, Jaden Thomas, and Aspen Grant worked their butts off this state finals and brought so much excitement to

the arena. Jaden Thomas, a freshman and her first year to compete in Texas, claimed the title of Rookie of the Year finishing 2nd in the Poles and 6th in the Barrels. Her palomino pony, Vegas did an outstanding job in both events and is in my books one awesome all around horse. Jake Kahla, who was awarded the honor of being THSRA’s Student President, also qualified for nationals in the steer wrestling. Sydni Cain, started off her week in Abilene by qualifying for Nationals as the 2019 Light Rifle Reserve Champion. hair off of his final horse in the bareback riding and topped the leaderboard with a score of 81 to be the Bareback Riding State Champion. And to finish it off, senior, Jack Wright, and past THSRA president, rode three broncs to earn the title of State Saddle Bronc Champion, making it the sweetest birthday present to his mom. I’m proud to say that Region V worked so hard and pulled off some great accomplishments at the 2019 state finals. I want to take the time to congratulate all the contestants who stepped over into the chute, rode into the box, and who came running down the alleyway. It takes a lot to make it to state and no matter how your week went, you should be proud of yourself and be confident in your skills that you’ve worked so hard on. Whether you’re a national qualifier or went home with two broken barriers, you have awesome things ahead of you. The Lord is constantly working in your life and bettering you with every situation you face. Wishing everyone the best of luck in Wyoming and safe travels wherever the rodeo roads take you this summer!

The Race for Region Seis
T

he Texas High School and Junior High Rodeo Finals are now in the rearview mirror. Region Six showed up with heart and soul, and went away with victories, lessons learned, new friends, and great memories. Gonzales and Abilene are great Texas towns, and a week in each was an awesome way to kick off the summer break. As the last bell rang at school, trucks fired up and headed to the Finals in Gonzales. The TJHRA Finals began on May 25 with the light rifle competition. The trailers rolled in Friday and Saturday, got set up, and away we went. Devin Young from Rosanky, TX. made three great barrel runs and won it all! Congrats to Devin for taking home the State Championship in barrel racing. Amy Ohrt of Victoria, TX, had a great week too. She roped three calves with speed and accuracy to earn the title of
Reserve Champion Breakaway roper. Region 6 is proud for Amy and Devin to represent Team Texas in Huron. For everyone else, head back to the practice pen, and we’ll see you back in Gonzales in September for our next region rodeo. Other than the rodeo events through the week, our region had a blast at the region tent eating food that the parents prepared for everyone. We appreciate everyone donating food, drinks, and funny stories throughout the week. The Expo center had dummy ropings to keep us all busy during the day and out of the heat. Jackpots kept us busy into each night. Contestants competed in volleyball, tug of war, and dodge ball during a few afternoons. Region 6 walked away with the volleyball championship and a sunburn. It was a great week, and we all thank Mrs. Dollery and Mrs. Boettcher for all they do for TJHRA and Region 6.
REGION 6 JUNIOR HIGH VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONS AFTER A HARD FOUGHT VICTORY IN GONZALES
June 8 kicked off the THSRA Finals in Abilene. The Queens contest and shooting competition kicked off early, and then the horses and trailers all started showing up at the Taylor County Expo Center. There was construction, dust, horses, trailers, livestock, and more construction. The new barn was nice, big, and had tons of stalls. Some events ran the first run in the new barn. The facilities are going to be phenomenal once completed, we just have to be patient. Everybody is excited for that to happen – hopefully next year. Taylor Mobbs was crowned the 2019-20 THSRA Queen. I had a chance to ask her a few questions while we were in Abilene. Taylor began by telling me that her trip to Abilene started with her truck breaking down. While waiting for help, she changed the fuel filter, almost ran out of diesel, got bad diesel, and spilled diesel in her trailer. She had to wait hours until she could switch all her things to a new truck. After all that, her dad gave her the nickname of Diesel Queen. I asked her why she wanted to be queen. Her answer was that she has dreamed of this since she was five years old and met a former THSRA Queen. Ironically, she now babysits her daughter. Another question was, “what was the hardest part planning for the contest?” Her TAYLOR MOBBS – THSRA RODEO QUEEN answer was the impromptu questions. “I’m a person that likes to be perfect in everything that I do, but sometimes you have to take something and run with it.” She is most excited about representing Texas at National High School Finals and at the NFR. Taylor and I have one thing in common, and that is our favorite quote is “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength”, Phil 4:13. Congratulations are also in order for our Region 6 national qualifiers. Those headed to Rock Springs, WY, are goat tyer Mayce Marek, team ropers Kirby Rawlinson & Rylie Smith, state champion bull rider Jayce Mozisek, and light rifle shooter Hadley Harris. Kirby overcame an injury early in the week to fight to the finish with Rylie for our ‘girl-power’ roping team.
MAYCE MAREK STEPPING OFF TO TIE A GOAT AT THE THSRA FINALS IN ABILENE
BULL RIDER JAYCE MOZISEK RIDING HIS BULL AT THE THSRA FINALS IN ABILENE
Mayce hustled for quick seven second runs on all three goats, talk about fast hands. Jayce rode the hide off his second-round bull for an 80-point ride. These five will represent our region with pride in Wyoming. Good luck Team Texas! The state finals wrapped up a memorable year for us all. We all have items to improve upon, and we can all also be proud of our accomplishments. As Cameron Diaz once said, “I’m living my life as a journey. My quest is to make it better every year.” Similarly, this rodeo life is a journey, not a destination. With that- good luck, safe travels, and see you down the road. Vaya con Dios!

PERFORMANCE REPORT
Never A Dull Moment
T
By JAYCI LEE BYLER

he 2019 THSRA State Finals came with some new challenges of getting around construction areas, to the timed events in a new arena, new or portable RV sites, and new stall locations. At the start of the week, we were welcomed with a smiling face of our region Secretary, Nena Boettcher along with other helping parents, Mrs Atkinson, Mrs Rawlinson, Mrs Shook & Mrs Krolczyk at checkin. Hooey gave us a styling new cap to rock during our week at state and many venders
like Classic put coupons in every contestant’s bag. Change was everywhere but the one thing that wasn’t changed was the intensity and drive that each contestant would bring each and every performance. CONNER ATKINSON Our out of arena activities were spent at the jackpots, meeting new kids from across the state, arcade games, bowling, & eating up Crawfish from Craig & Randi Miller, Shrimp bisque from Cory Pierce, Steak & Ribs from Stone & Outhier families. There were parents cooking at the Region 7 cook sites constantly. The Kenney family & Don Poole cutter clan showed up to lead the Cheering Squads. It was definitely a tough week of competition at the THSRA state finals with high scores in roughstock and fast hands in the tie down. There was never a dull moment sitting in the stands throughout every performance, a pole bumped or a loop barely getting around a calf’s neck. When the second go finished Friday night we had 23 Contestants from Region VII make the short round STEER WRESTLING: Garret Curry, Preston Peay BARREL RACING: Jayci Byler BREAKAWAY: Kera Lamb, Carli Rawlinson CALF ROPING: Connor Atkinson GOAT TYING: Makenna Shook TEAM ROPING: Cade Boettcher MADI OUTHIER and Tanner Tomlinson POLE BEND-

PERFORMANCE REPORT
THAT’S A WRAP! H
By Rylee
Howton – Performance Reporter
ello, my name is Rylee Howton and I was chosen your 2019-2020 Region VIII Ariat Reporter! The 2019 Texas High School Rodeo Association State finals may have come to an end but the memories made at the Taylor County Expo Center will last forever. Over 600 rodeo athletes and 1,000 horses competed for state champion titles and a spot on the Texas Team headed to Rock Springs, Wyoming for nationals. Opening ceremonies gave the athletes a chance to have some fun by competing in the Hooey Boot Race, Tug O’ War and Henson Truck Push before the pressure of the
NEWLY ELECTED THSRA VICE-PRESIDENT RYLEE DODSON AND STATE SECRETARY SHYANNE BAUERL
finals began. During the Special Kids rodeo, athletes were able to share their passion with some very special children. Rylee Dodson was elected as our THSRA VicePresident and Shyanne Bauerle as the Secretary. In the shooting division, Kate McNeil dominated the Light Rifle with a BAILEY GUBERT EMMA SMITH AND 2019 THSRA CASH FRETWELL 642 score qualifying for BREAKAWAY SHORT-GO BOUND ROPING CHAMPION! IN THE CUTTING! nationals. Round one saw many Region VIII athletes succeed, but Bailey Gubert set an early pace in the Breakaway Roping with a blazing 2.2 second 2nd place finish. Region VIII Champion barrel racer, Rylee Howton stopped the clock in 17.558 seconds to place 9th with Kylie Mask close behind in 10th place in the cloverleaf pattern. In the Pole Bending, Tess Underbrink was 5th with a 20.245 and Maile Sciba 10th running a 20.428. All around cowboy, Cash Fretwell and his partner Rymond Haby were a 5.880 placing 7th in the Team Roping. Riviera Cowboy, Tres Mendietta was a 9.920 to place 9th in the Calf Roping and finished the first round. Round two continued to be promising in the Breakaway with Bailey Gubert placing 5th with a 2.37 qualifying first in the short go with a 4.470 on two head. Jorge Canales and Cayetano Tijerina roped a 6th place finish in the Team Roping. Region VIII cutters came back strong with Trent Wisian marking a 146 to tie for 3rd. Cash Fretwell marked a 143 to place 6th and Emma Smith marked a 144.5 for an 8th place finish in round two. Region VIII had several members qualify for the short-go on Saturday afternoon. Bailey Gubert roped her third calf in 3.63 for a total of 8.10 seconds on three head to win the state championship and qualify for nationals in the Breakaway! Maile Sciba qualified in the Pole Bending but a down pole cost precious time in the finals and finished 11th. In the cutting Cash Fretwell, Emma Smith and Trent Wisian finished 10th, 11th and 12th respectively. Congratulations to everyone that qualified for state, our new state officers, the short-go finalist, our national qualifiers, and of course the friends and family members for supporting the contestants throughout the year. Good luck and safe travels to Bailey and Kate and all the Team Texas National Qualifiers!

tate finals is the place where the pressure is on, the competition is tough, and each member has the opportunity to make a name for themselves. As the 2018- 2019 Junior High and High School Rodeo season comes to an end, Region IX is proud to have a lot of successful members who competed at the TJHRA and THSRA Finals. Throughout the season, each of our members worked diligently to earn their spot at the State Finals. Finally, the time was here for each member to shine in their specific areas, and our region definitely rose up to the occasion. Stormy Stokes and the Stokes Family of Region IX were named the THSRA Ranch Family of the year. Region IX is proud to have five National High School Rodeo Qualifiers this year! Brady Hooks is the 2019 THSRA Trap Shooting Champion. He recently graduated from New Waverly High School, and plans to attend Lone Star College to pursue an Electrical Technology Certification. Brady is following in the footsteps of his older brother, Riley, who won the same title when he was in high school. From hunting with his friends to preparing for this competition, Brady has always enjoyed shooting. He prepared for state by practicing shooting in his backyard with his family and friends, who have helped him tremendously.
Savannah Jensen just finished up her sophomore year at Huntsville High School. She qualified for Nationals in Barrel Racing on her horse, Frenchy. Savannah plans to prepare for Nationals by going to California with her grandma until the competition. Her grandma trained the horse she earned the spot to Nationals on. Tanner Woodard is a recent graduate of Tomball High School, who plans to attend Sam Houston State University in the fall and continue his rodeo career. Tanner is the 2019 THSRA Steer Wrestling Champion. To prepare for the state finals, Tanner practiced diligently with Mr. John Schueneman, who has been a great help to him throughout his steer wrestling career. Also, he attended church at Branded for Christ in Huntsville, Texas to help him grow in his relationship with God. As he prepares to go to nationals, Tanner will continue to practice to better himself in the arena, and also read his Bible. He feels that when he is spiritually right with the Lord then his performance in the arena improves. Calvary Norris is a recent graduate of Rudder High School in Bryan, Texas. He plans to attend Ranger College, where he will continue his rodeo career and pursue a degree in business. Calvary is the 2019 THSRA Bull Riding Reserve Champion. He prepared for state finals by riding practice bulls and making sure not to put too much pressure on himself. As he prepares to go to Nationals, Calvary plans to receive help from Jay Campbell and Shawn McCown, who have helped him in the past. He is very thankful for his parents for supporting him and his love for the sport of rodeo. Charlie Fisher recently graduated from Rudder High TANNER WOODARD School and will attend Texas A&M University in the fall to pursue a degree in petroleum engineering. Charlie qualified for Nationals in Bull Riding at the THSRA Finals. He prepared for state finals by working hard physically in the practice pen but also preparing himself mentally for the tough competition he faced at state finals. Charlie is thankful for the support from his family as he wraps up his High School Rodeo career. He knows they have put in many miles and countless hours to ensure that he is the best he can possibly be. At the TJHRA Finals in May, Region IX brought home four state champion titles and eight members qualified for nationals. Congratulations to our state champions Tylie McDonald in Girls Goat Tying, Koby Douch in Tie Down Roping, Tyler Calhoun in Ribbon Roping, and Audree Phillips in Ribbon Running. As well as our other national qualifiers, Alli Paige Cadwallader in Barrel Racing, Bryce Jensen in Bareback Riding and Boys Goat Tying, Ethan Winckler in Bull Riding, Keller McDougald in Chute Dogging, and Tyler Calhoun in Boys Goat Tying. Good luck to these Region IX members at Nationals!

By CHAINEY
WEITZ – Performance Reporter
an you imagine it? Everyone in region X competing for the top ten spots to head to Texas Highschool and Junior HighState, tough right? Region X is one of the most giving region to their kids. They were the only region to give their kids a wrist band to Prime Time, which is a fun place for the contestants. They always make sure every kid is taken care of and behaves correctly. The Texas High School Rodeo Association is such a huge and amazing organiza-
tion to be able to be apart of and compete in. There are so many great people and sponsors who are willing to lend a helping hand whenever it is needed. The THSRA and TJHRA State Finals is not only a fun event to be at and hang out with friends, but also can give many kids a chance to head to Nationals! Competing with the best in the state going head to head all craving a spot on the Texas National Team. Region X is so competitive to even get a spot to go to State because we have so many great cowboys and cowgirls competing. “Region rodeo’s are the rodeo’s I look forward to every year.” Kallyn Snedecor says. Chet Weitz is a senior in high school and has been to high school state all four years. Chet and his partner Mason Pitts are from Region X and won the Team Roping this year at the THSRA state finals and average. “I enjoy hanging out with friends but also love being here to compete to the best of my abilities” Chet says. The year has been such a blessing to many people and we can’t wait for more fun memories to come!

feel like I say this every year….but what an awesome State Finals, Texas Junior High Rodeo had the last week of May! It seems like everything just fell into place! After months of planning, laying awake wondering all the what-if ’s, it happened and it was GREAT! Texas has a great group of contestants headed to Huron, SD this month. Last year in Huron we had a great time, the people are very friendly and very inviting. I am looking forward to traveling with the team to bring the trophy back to Texas. During the rodeo at the General meeting we sat seventeen new State Board of Directors and will have four more to seat in August. That is always great that Junior High is changing and bringing new people to leadership. Our new student officers are going to have a great year, President is Garrett Talamantes, Vice President is Emma McCarthy, Secretary is Kinley Shook and Princess is Vie Vie Blanchard. I want to thank all the Executive Board, State Directors, Secretaries and most of all the Parents that bring all the contestants to all the Junior High Rodeos. It takes a village to put these rodeos on and we could not do it without all of you. Hope you all have a great summer and don’t forget to root the Texas team on in Huron!
