PERFORMANCE REPORT

ello from Region 1! We just wrapped up our 2022 State Finals Rodeo in Abilene and it was an amazing experience. The weather was just as hot as the times and scores in the arena. Throughout the week there were many heartbreaks and victories, but as the dust settled Region 1 is sending five members on to the
NHSFR in mid-July as well as five Junior High members to the NJHFR in June. Watch out Gillette and Perry, the Texas Panhandle is coming and we are bringing ten of our fiercest competitors. Let’s get into what all happened for Region 1 for our High School and Junior High competitors. State High School Finals started off with Reined Cow Horse and the Cutting events. These events feature the skill of sensational cow horses and very talented cowboys and cowgirls. Region 1 was beyond well represented in both events. Owen Cogdell from Tulia, Texas, was our first national qualifier in the Boys Cutting. Owen had a fantastic finals and brought home a Reserve State Championship. Clayton Anderson of Clarendon, Texas was our second national qualifier in the Reined Cow Horse. Clayton had an equally successful finals as he headed back to Clarendon with a Reserve State Championship as well. Congrats to Owen and Clayton and their equine partners. After the conclusion of the cow horse events we jumped right into the traditional rodeo events. Everything officially kicked off on Sunday, June 4th. This is where a new queen was crowned, scholarship recipients were recognized and region cham-

As the week continued there were fantastic runs and rides happening in every performance. It seems like five days of rodeo performances is a long time but once they start, all of a sudden you look up and they are ending. At the finish on Saturday we added our final three members to the nationals list. Abby McCreary of Canyon, Texas is the Reserve State Champ in Breakaway. Huge accomplishment for anyone but what a great performance her freshman year. Abby is also our newly elected state secretary. Benny Proffitt of Canadian, Texas saw his second high school qualification to Nationals with a 3rd place finish in the Saddle Bronc Riding. The last Region 1 National qualifier is Gus Gaillard. Gus finishes his senior year with his 4th trip to nationals, but this year Gus heads to Gillette as the Texas High School All-Around Cowboy. Gus finished the week with a 3rd place finish in Steer Wrestling and a Reserve State Championship in Saddle Bronc Riding. Congrats to Gus, Benny and Abby on great runs and rides in Abilene. With all the success we saw, there was some heartache that fell upon our friends. Tori Bush lost her great barrel horse Woody during the state finals and our Region 1 director Randy Martin was in a horse accident in Abilene. Please lift up both Tori and Randy in your prayers. Tori we hope your heart heals after the loss of such an amazing animal and Randy we pray for your complete and speedy recovery. The Junior High State Finals took place in late May and after the week of rodeoing, Region 1 sends ABBY McCREARY off five memphoto by Jennings bers to Nationals in Perry, GA. pions were presented. During this time we all received a wonderful message from Trey Hazen Lamb & Avery Johnson about being resilient competitors Armstrong both of Borger, as we walk with God. Blessed by the word Texas secured a Nationals that Trey delivered and grateful for him spot with a 4th place finish in the Ribbon Roping. being such a huge part of our rodeo lives. Cutter Bruce of Childress, Texas finished 4th in the Chute Dogging to claim his slot at Nationals. Slayde Stalls of McLean, Texas also had a 4th place finish in the Steer Saddle GUS GAILLARD Bronc Riding to punch photo by Jennings his ticket. Our final NJHFR qualifier is Chance Anderson of Clarendon, Texas. Chance is the State Champion in Steer Saddle Bronc Riding and the Junior High Rookie of the Year. Chance is also the younger brother of Clayton Anderson NHSFR qualifier in the Reined Cow Horse, so it will be a busy summer for the Andersons. Congratulations to Hazen, Avery, Cutter, Slayde and Chance for the great week of competition in Gonzales. This wraps up the recap of the 2022 Junior High and High School Texas State Rodeo Finals. For Region 1, we are blessed with an outstanding set of competitors that will be representing not only our region but the great state of Texas on the national stage. We wish each cowboy and cowgirl good luck as they each compete for an individual and team national title. Also, we pray for safe travels for them BENNY PROFFITT and their families as they hit the rodeo trail. photo by Jennings

ongratulations to the five junior high students attending Perry, Georgia for nationals. We also have three Junior High State Champions! Also in the high school division, we are sending six students to Gillette, Wyoming, and two are reserve state champions! Colee Cox, an upcoming freshman from Tell, Texas is your Texas Junior High State Champion Breakaway Roper. Going into the state finals Colee had two of her #1 horses out due to injury, with that, she had planned on just making solid runs in Gonzales and accepting the outcome. Despite having a rough first go-round, due to a hard-running calf, she just trusted in the Lord and was going to finish out the week in Gonzales strong. Which is exactly what she did! Colee made a great solid run in the second round which landed her #12 in the average to qualify her for the short go! When short-go-Saturday came around she checked her draw and knew she drew a good calf that she could be fast on. She backed into the box and did exactly what she knew how to do. She roped a smoking fast 1.9 to win the short round and take the state title. Colee and her two horses, Fly- the horse that she won state
on, and Rouge are getting prepped and ready to make solid runs in Perry, Georgia to finish out her junior high rodeo career. Colee is ready to get to high school to start cutting and competing in reining cow horse competitions! Taylor Baize, a 4-time state qualifier, and now a 2-time national qualifier, and 1-time reserve champion barrel racer of the THSRA received a scholarship to the University of Texas Tech to rodeo. She is majoring in apparel design and manufacturing, which is fashion design, and plans on working in high-end fashion merchandising and pro rodeoing as well! Taylor is ready to go to college and represent the school and region she came from. She is prepared to be a leader, role model, a good student, and competitor for her rodeo team. “I also want to represent my family, friends, Region II, and the THSRA because they all contributed to building me into the person I am today,” says Baize. Taylor, and her barrel horse Bo, are prepping for nationals by going back to the basics. Taylor says she is working on her hand position, sitting, and being smooth, because smooth is fast. She also plans on entering some rodeos before Gillette, Wyoming to keep Bo in running shape. Taylor’s key to success is “what you put in outside of the arena is what you get inside the arena.” Taylor has experienced first hand what hard work does. Baize’s advice to anyone going into their senior year is “Have fun! It’s your last year so give it all you’ve got. Use it as a year to up your riding, work on your mental game/ composure, and cherish your time because it’s special.”

alk – speak in order to communicate information, ideas or express feelings. Let’s Talk Land Real Estate Team was created to facilitate the exchange of information, ideas and feelings about the purchase and sale of land. New technology allows us access to vast amounts of information at our fingertips, but talking is required to understand a client’s ideas, specific parameters, and emotions involved in each transaction. Talking has increased in value as the real estate market has recently been in high demand and short supply, which lead us to many “off-market” transactions. Relationships and conversations with other real estate professionals has once again become a primary source of opportunity. As Kyla Wendland Dodson, I have a lifetime of ranch real estate that lead me to start this new business. My dad was an Ag Economics professor at West Texas State University in Canyon, TX, and we had lease country there along with feedlot cattle. Both of my parents have been ranch brokers since the 70s and worked as full service consultants for their clients. We had family ranches near San Angelo and Rocksprings, and leased ranches south of Uvalde. As kids, we would stare out the window on the long road trips and find landmarks, note the changes in terrain, types of trees and how the land was used differently across the many miles between ranches. My family worked together at the ranch, in real estate and in my parents’ mortgage company. I carried on the family tradition by attending Texas A&M University and talking my way through school inspired me to stay and earn an MBA focused on finance. My professional career began at Koch Industries, Inc. in Houston in the natural gas industry. John, my husband, chose law school. As we began our family and the next chapter of life, we moved back to his roots
in Uvalde County. Career options required creativity and I spent several years driving pink Cadillacs and serving others through Mary Kay. Next, I worked at Patterson Veterinary helping veterinarians with business development and really enjoyed facilitating buy-out opportunities. We were leaders in all of our children’s organizations – especially if horses were involved! Reece, Rylee, Molly and Kymber are our greatest gifts! John has been the elected prosecutor for Uvalde County for over 20 years and his private real estate law practice lead to the opportunity to purchase a local title company, Garner Abstract & Land Co. I joined him in the title business as escrow officer and learned how to expand our services statewide. We launched a land transaction specialty brand, Ranchers Title. This emersion back into serving real estate transactions lead me to add a real estate license to my toolkit. Our current chapter lead us to move to Weatherford… Brock, America. My passion is showing reining horses and our girls like to rodeo. Land is changing use rapidly here and across much of Texas! THSRA is one of the first organizations I chose to partner with as our value systems are aligned with preserving western heritage, promoting family values and providing future opportunities for the outstanding youth raised through THSRA! John and I met at a rodeo arena, were both members of THSRA. Our daughter, Rylee, competed in many events over 7 years and served as HS State Vice-President. My work is my worship. In my toolkit, Jesus is first, then a diverse set of tools from my experience in financial evaluation, large corporate to small town, family-owned business, large farms and ranches, development, minerals, wind, solar, water and title. I love serving others and I am looking for more real estate professionals to join Let’s Talk Land Real Estate Team to serve clients with excellence.

Fantastic Finals Results for Region IV
R
By DIXIE TABB – Performance Reporter
egion IV showed up and showed out the past couple weeks at TJHRA and THSRA state finals. We have several National qualifiers and THREE state champions! Qualifying for nationals in the Junior High division: Cole Willis in the chute dogging, Kam Loud in the bull riding, Josie Whittington- barrel racing reserve state champion, and Brant Cookston- saddle bronc steer riding state champion When asked, who is your biggest supporter, Brant Cookston without hesitation says, “My Momma!” He mentions that she has put him on every bareback horse and bull and is always there for him. Brant started riding sheep at a young age and later moved up to calves. He said, “One day they were bucking ponies at a local rodeo and I begged my mom to let me do it, and she did.” Since then he’s been hooked. Since returning home from state, Brant has been working out and getting on his spur board daily to prepare for Nationals. Congratulations to all of our jr. high state qualifiers, and Good luck to all
of our National qualifiers in Perry, Georgia. At the high school state finals, Region IV had two state champions. Kenley Beck was the state champion pole bender and Kaiden Loud was the state champion bull rider. We had a few more make it to nationals also: Alee Andrews in breakaway and Walker Akins and Cole Carpenter in Calf roping. Kaiden Loud states that his Dad has taught him everything that he knows about riding a bull, therefore he looks up to his Dad. Kaiden says, “It feels GREAT to be the state champion bull rider.” Kaiden loves practicing and getting on as many bulls as he can. He practices at their house, Rafter J Cowboy Church, Athens Cowboy Church, and with Austin Richardson.
REGION IV NATIONAL QUALIFIERS
THE DUFFEYS AND SMALL DOG RACE WINNER, LAYLA
Kenley Beck mentions that they live on 80 acres and she paces the fence line to keep her mare in shape, and when she travels she is sure to continue some kind of exercise. She says, “My mare loves poles, so it's not hard to keep her honest”. Kenley was shocked with the rush of adrenaline after making her third run at state and stated “I was extremely excited to make a clean run, I had no idea of the standings.” All she knew was she made a smooth run, which was all she could do. Kenley talks about Goldie, her 8 year old Palomino mare that was raised by her grandparents and given to her as a yearling. She started patterning her in poles after her main mount had a hock injury that needed time to heal. They made their first pole run when Goldie was 5. According to Kenley, Goldie has helped her obtain her goals and made the past three years amazing, “Everyone should have the chance to own a heart horse like Goldie.” Congratulations to all state qualifiers and short go qualifiers. Good luck to all of our high school contestants at Nationals in Gillete, Wyoming. Bring home all the goods and another National Team Championship! Region IV had many winners outside the arena as well. Tierney
Myers stepped up and decided to run for State Vice President and obtained a State Office. THSRA’s amazing sponsor, Bill Fick Ford, donated a truck given at the High School finals and Region IV sold the winning Bill Fick Ford Truck ticket! Wylie Jo Hodges was awarded highest ticket sales in all 10 regions. The winner in the drawing of these tickets was Kevin Ward of Athens, Texas. At the TJHRA finals they played several games for family and friends as well as contestants to be involved in. One of our Region IV dogs became the state Champion in the dog race. Layla, a 2 year old Jack Russell terrier (Owners Marc and Ashley Duffey and son Tate) won the 2 rounds in the small dog category. Then proved she was a super dog and won against the big dogs too. When asked what makes her run straight and fast and not be distracted, “Red squeaky ball, she doesn’t want anyone else to have it!” Congratulations Layla!! Region IV, definitely left a mark with all these wins. To wrap up this rodeo season, congratulations to our 2022 graduates! Enjoy the next chapter of your life. We are so glad that Region IV and THSRA could be a part of the chapter you just closed. We wish you all the best of luck in your future plans.

PERFORMANCE REPORT
THAT’S A WRAP R
By GRACELANN BROWN – Performance Reporter
egion V put on a great show at Texas State High School Finals in Abilene Texas; which included over 75 contestants competing for money, prizes, and a spot at the High School National Final Rodeo. Out of all of our region competitors, we had 6 contestants win a spot to the National Rodeo. Our team ropers Garrett Freeman and Cooper Parsley went into the first round wanting a clean run and came out with a 6.990 run with a five second penalty putting them at an 11.990 run. They both knew that they could be faster and came out of the second round with the fastest time of the second go winning the round being a clean 5.020 putting them waiting and preparing for the short go. They were confident but not cocky going into the short go and came out second going to nationals with a short go time of 5.440. Cooper also left the state finals with the Spirit Award. When watching Garrett and Cooper’s first run, it looks like a very clean six second run, but after the judge flagged it clean Cooper went to him and said that he only caught one leg and not two. The judge said that he called it clean so it was up
to Cooper to do what he thought was right. Cooper said “I couldn’t walk out of there like that with all of those people hollering. I just wanted to make it right.” Cooper gave up the opportunity to win the first round because he cared more about honestly than the competition. Taylor Davis qualified to the Texas State Finals in the pole bending and barrel racing. She did not make it back to nationals with her barrel runs being 17.484 first go and 17.315 second go making her back to the short go. Sadly the short go did not go as planned for Taylor ending her with a 100 pushing her out of nationals in the barrel racing. She had 3 beautiful pole runs being a 20.230 in the first go, a 20.073 in the second go, and a 25.091 ending the short go. Taylor qualified third for the nationals in the pole bending to go represent region V. Ethan Winckler always says “Just chasing my dreams”, and it looks like he sure is getting there. Ethan wanted good rides at state and was striving for a spot at nationals and he won the number 4 spot with a great ride in the first go scoring a 78. He bucked off right before the buzzer at 7.2 seconds, but came back strong in the short go with another 78 point ride. Ethan’s favorite part of the state finals was getting the chance to make it to nationals, but the downside he said was bucking off right before the second go buzzer. He said he really liked to be able to hang out with all of is friends, but wasn’t too happy when we got ambushed with water balloons after the first go. Most of his region rodeos this past season went well with him barely coming off early, only bucking off at a few rodeos. Region V had two bareback riders qualify for nationals, one of which being Brayze Schill who came in second place in the short go qualifying to nationals. Brayze got 74 points in the first go, 76 points in the second go, and another 74 in the short go. Brayze is now proud to say that he will be helping to represent region V at the High School National Rodeo. Kash Martin also qualified to nationals taking home the Texas State Finals Champion Bareback Rider title with him. Kash came out of the first round with a 78 point ride, 74 points in the second go, and pulled a 76 point ride out of the short go. Kash had an amazing 2021-2022 rodeo season. He won almost every region rodeo he entered. He went into state the winner of region V with a total of 108 points. Kash wanted to win it all so his least favorite part of the finals was getting second in the second round, but his favorite part was taking home that state title. Kash loved getting the chance to have a great time with his friends in and out of the rodeo. That is a wrap on Texas High School Rodeo State Finals! Great job to everyone that competed in Abilene Texas this Year. Good luck to everyone from region V that qualified to National Finals in July!

exas has one of the toughest organizations of rodeos and if you watched the Junior High and High School state finals this May and June you’ll see what I’m talking about. There were 425 Junior high contestants at the Junior High State Finals in May and then there were 682 Contestants at the High School State Finals in June. Junior High Nationals will be held in Georgia and High School Nationals will be held in Wyoming. Region 6 had 57 contestants at the state finals and going to Nationals for Junior High are Audrey Thibodeaux in the poles
she was also the Junior high State Champion in the poles as well also going to nationals in the poles is Mia Janosky in the number 3 spot. In the number 4 spot in girls goat tying going to Nationals is Sadie Patterson. Case CASE CERNY Cerny also coming in the number 4 spot to Nationals for both tie down and Light rifle. High School had 58 contestants at the state finals going to nationals are Jolie Watson in the goats in spot number 3, Devin Young in the barrels coming in spot number 2, Colby McDonald and Jayden Cisneros in the team roping in spot number 4, and Sophia Zimmerman as the Texas High School Rodeo Queen. A kid that stood out to me in Junior High Finals was Case Cerny, he is from Region 6 and this was his first year in Texas Junior High Rodeo and he made it to nationals in the Tie-down roping and the Light Rifle. “I have been roping everyday, tying calves everyday, shooting all the time, and working out as well. I am excited to represent Texas in Georgia and am excited to be in Georgia for the first time.” A person who stood out to me at High School was Jolie Watson. She is from region 6 and qualified for nationals in the goat tying. She is a sophomore and her 2nd year in THSRA. “I am going to prepare for nationals like it was any other rodeo. But most importantly I am going to make sure my horse is in tip top shape. It feels exciting, only the top four from each state get to go and I am one of the few.” JOLIE WATSON

s the summer of 2022 is just getting started, the Texas Junior High and High School Rodeo Finals come to an end. At the finals, the Texas temperatures were not the only thing hitting new highs. For the state finals qualifiers, the stakes were
high and the pressure was tight, as each competitor fought to capture the coveted title of State Champion, and ultimately a qualifying spot to the National finals. Our Region 7 competitors represented us well as we are sending four athletes to the Junior High Nationals in Perry, Georgia, and four to the High School Nationals in Gillette, Wyoming. Congratulations to all our National Qualifiers: Rhyder Risipal (Boys Breakaway), Lane Leopold (Chute Dogging), and Cash Cockrum and Jacob Stansbury (Team Roping) - Junior High. Kinley Shook (Barrel Racing), Wyatt Clifton (Trap Shooting), Rodney Jackson (Steer Wrestling) and Jayci Byler (Pole Bending and Girls Cutting) - High school. Cash Coackrum and Jacob Stansbury not only won the title of Champion Header and Healer in the team roping, but they all got the first-place win in the first and second round, along with the average win. When asked to describe how he reacted to qualifying for Nationals, Jacob described it as “A very exciting moment that not only we made nationals, but that we won 1st out of the whole state of Texas.” Jacob said his experience was made extra special since it was his last year in junior high. At the high school finals, we sent eleven competitors back to the short round, but none stood out quite like Rodney Jackson and Jayci Byler. Rodney had two great runs in the first two performance rounds, but had a little malfunction with his horse in the short go. Though Rodney did not get the start he wanted, he ran it all the way to the end of the arena and didn’t give up. That was a tough situation to be in, and Rodney overcame it and secured himself a spot to the National Finals. Jayci Byler had an exceptional state finals as she qualified for the short go in the barrel racing and the pole bending. She even competed in six events at the finals! Jayci came out as the reserve champion in both the pole bending and the girls cutting. Region 7 is not only great in the arena, but also outside of the arena. At the Junior High Finals, we had two competitors run for state officer positions. JAYCI BYLER Both Trevor Bentley and Ryan Ehlinger won

the hearts of their fellow competitors and are now President and Vice President of Texas Junior High Rodeo Association. Region 7 has built a certain type of family bond. There will always be someone there for you. At both state finals, the Region 7 parents went out of their way to make sure all our athletes were fed and having fun. The parents provided a sit-down dinner every night at junior high finals. At high school, the parents had the pits going 24/7 to ensure their kids always had something to eat. Some special parents will even step
up and help with the chutes, let out gates, alleyway help, etc., which deserves a special thank you! Without these amazing people the rodeos would not run as smoothly as they do now. A special thank you is to be given to Susie Johnson, the parent liaison for RODENY JACKSON Region 7, for all the hard work she put into making the two weeks a special experience for all. Not only did she bring contagious energy and loving smiles, but she showed out with her flawless round offs for entertainment. Susie even won free Whataburger for all the rodeo kids as she won the Whataburger ring throwing contest. She has even put together multiple social media accounts for the region, to make sure that every competitor is kept in the know. Thank you, Susie, for all that you do! Acts 20:35 “In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

PERFORMANCE REPORT
Region VIII DOES it once again!
E
By SAMANTHA CORTINAS
– Performance Reporter
ach year, thousands of Texas high school students battle it out over the course of 10 rodeos in their respective regions for a spot in the state finals. With Region VIII being one of the largest member participants
in the state this season, competition was steep, and the best of the best got to take that drive to Abilene for the state finals. Despite the tragic school shooting that took place just a week prior to the State Finals in Region VIII’s home arena of Uvalde, Texas, Region VIII still showed up at THSRA State Finals with their best game faces on. Seniors Clay Tom Hurt and Tres Colvin were tough to beat in Steer Wrestling, earning the Champion and Reserve Champion titles. Champion, Hurt went into the State Finals confident with all the hard work and practice he’s put into it, proving hard work pays off in big ways. Little Montana, the Paint horse Hurt won with loves to have belly scratches and he makes sure she gets them all the time. Reserve Steer Wrestling Champion, Colvin started youth rodeos when he was only six years old and “has been hooked ever since.” Colvin gave this advice to aspiring state bound members, “Focus, perfect practice, and have resilience if things do
not go your way.” Both champions talked about how they’re excited to have a shot at being the next National Steer Wrestling Champion. The girls brought their A game as well. Bringing home the Champion and Reserve Champion titles for Light Rifle, were Maddie Aasbo and Kirby McNeill. Aasbo went into the State Finals with the mindset, “Let the chips fall where they may.” Obviously, her strategy worked in her favor as she is the THSRA State Champion. Aasbo is most excited to be competing against the best of the best at Nationals. She credited her success to her parents and leant a piece of advice her dad has always given to her, “If there’s a will, there’s a way.” Aasbo believes this to be true if you want it bad enough. McNeill was busy at a roping camp but took a moment to give some insight on her Reserve Champion title. McNeill struggled with having some rough practices before she went to state; once there, her sister helped her mentally prepare and got her through. “After the shoot I was satisfied with the way I shot.” McNeill said reflecting on her time at state. Having her ACL torn twice prevented McNeill from being able to qualify for state in the years prior. On the mend, this was her year to shine and indeed she did. This talented rider hasn’t been able to practice much with her trainer, so she competes every weekend as a way to practice. Brinley Lippincott has waited three years to make it to Nationals and this year at State Finals, she landed herself in 4th place for Girls Cutting. You often hear rodeo people talk about trusting your horse, and Lippincott makes
it a staple in her riding. When talking about her horse Rolex, who gets spoiled with chiropractic and cryotherapy treatments, she said, “He has taught me to trust him even when I’ve made a mistake. He is going to take good care of me.” Rodeo is known as being a family inclusive sport and without a doubt, the rodeo world proves this time and time again. Each member interviewed took a second to thank their families for the important role they play in creating the successful path they are individually on. Member and State qualifier, Layla Weaks remarked on her family, “My biggest supporter has not been just one person. It has been my family. My mom, stepdad, stepmom, dad and little sister have sacrificed workdays, important outings, and days off just to help me succeed. They have done absolutely everything and anything they could to help me do my best and watch me grow as a rodeo athlete.” Weaks travelled to state with her entire family behind her, representing Region VIII in the Girls Breakaway Roping. She drew a tough calf her first go, but she bounced back and finished strong, roping a 3.3. Although she fell short of getting her ticket to Nationals, she felt a sense of accomplishment for crushing her goals and competing against the top high school rodeo athletes in Texas. Best of luck to the Nationals Bound Texas team, especially Region VIII who will undoubtedly have everyone at home rooting for them. #UvaldeStrong

nother THSRA state finals means another successful week for Region IX. From the cutting to the bull riding, Region IX is sending eight of their very own to the National High School Finals Rodeo. Amongst the athletes are former state champions and back to back national qualifiers that are ready to represent Team Texas in Gillette, Wyoming. However, Region IX is sending some first-time national qualifiers. Freshman Riley Farris of Madisonville, Texas made her debut in the cutting as the 2022 state champion and will head to nationals to represent both Region IX and Team Texas. The cutting competition, along with the reining cow horse, takes place the weekend prior to the start of the rodeo competition. Being so, most do not get to witness these exciting events. Yet, even with the small crowd, Riley Farris managed to get everyone on their feet, providing her with an "unreal" experience. "Going in, I had no expectations," Riley said. "In my mind, I didn't even think I could make nationals, much less win a state title." Even though Riley sur-
prised herself, many expected the Farris name would come out on top. Last year, Riley's cousin, Faith Farris, was crowned the state and national champion in the same discipline. Riley exclaims, "To be able to make my family proud and carry on a legacy means the world to me. I couldn't be more grateful." Farris is ready to take on nationals with an "I just hope for the best" mindset. She explains that she will stick to the same agenda she has at any other cutting competition. Riley states, "I'm going to continue working my horses and letting my dad do what he does best... fix my mistakes." Farris gives a large amount of credit to her supportive family, amazing pen help, and her equine partner. However, she gives all thanks and glory to God. She proclaims, "He (God) gave me this amazing opportunity and the people to do it." With her confidence, faithfulness, and grit, it will be exciting to see all that Farris accomplishes at the NHSFR, the upcoming NYCHA World Finals, and the rest of her cutting career. Region IX could not be more proud of the competitors going to nationals. The talent from Texas will be sure to make headlines. Be sure to tune in to the Cowboy Channel to watch all of the action live. Region IX wishes all contestants from all regions a blessed finals, and hopefully, Team Texas' seventh consecutive team championship. We will see everyone in Wyoming. God Bless!

ongratulations to the Whatakid of the Year, Seaver Senter! Seaver is a rodeo-loving, 16-year-old from Ropesville, Texas. He has two older siblings who are twins. His sister, Sayer, started goat tying when she was in elementary school. Seaver and his brother Sutton followed soon after, sparking their passion for roping. All siblings were members of the High Plains Rodeo Association, then joined Region 2 for TJHRA and THSRA. Fast forward, Seaver is now a senior at Ropes High School. After high school, he plans to attend and be on the rodeo team for a junior college, and then go to Texas Tech University and rodeo for them! As a THSRA contestant, Seaver has taken the time and necessary precautions to prepare for his events. That means having everything he needs at the arena when the performance starts. He ensures that his horse has been fed, its splints and bell boots are on, and its cinch has been tightened before roping. He attempts to keep his eyes on the steer to ensure good reaction and resistance. This mental preparation allows him to be comfortable and confident, zoning everything else out when he backs into the box, while focusing on victory. Seaver has great insight into the logistics of roping. He is the student team roping director, which has taught him to pay
attention to details and be comfortable speaking with his directors and mentors. With Seaver’s impressive local engagement as roping director, he also works at local events in his region, filling in as student director. He enjoys being able to help in the arena while enjoying precious time with his friends. Whataburger has been a special part of Seaver’s competition memories. One occasion, after a rough day in the arena, his horse judging team’s scores were not as high as expected. The team’s spirits were lifted by dining at their local Whataburger. “We had a good time cheering each other up and eating juicy burgers, fries and shakes,” said Seaver. His advice to all kids would be to take the initiative to help others without being asked. Whether it be at rodeos, at home, or at a community event, Seaver encourages his peers to look for an opportunity to lend a hand when needed. Upon reflection of how far he’s come, Seaver would tell his younger self to work harder and not give up. He believes that hard work always pays off. Being a Whatakid truly changed his experience and proved to him that there are in fact positive results for hard work.

egion X members were on fire at this summer’s TJHRA and THSRA State Finals! When the dust settled on a long week in both Gonzales and Abilene, Region X members had earned four state championships and are sending ten student athletes to Nationals. On the Jr High side, Region X was well represented in the Team Roping, qualifying two teams to the NJHFR in Perry, Georgia. Denton Parish and Haze Bruce were the Reserve State Champs while Paisley Foegelle and
Cade Sandstrom qualified in the 4th place position. In addition to those going on to Nationals, Region X had seven other competitors qualify for the short round. When asked how she felt about her first qualification to Nationals, Paisley Foegelle joked saying, “I’m so excited to qualify for Nationals in the team roping and to represent Team Texas…but I’m not sure about that drive! Long drives are not my favorite!” The heat was on, literally, in Abilene at the THSRA State Finals! With temps surpassing 100 degrees on multiple days, the competitors were thankful to compete in the air-conditioned Taylor Telecom Arena. Region X’s first national qualifier came in the trap shooting as Cody Owens finished third, and will make his first appearance at the NHSFR in Gillette, Wyoming. In total, Region X had 14 short go qualifiers, and at the end of the week, five total competitors had earned four state championships and spots on Team Texas for Nationals: Saddle Bronc – Jase Stout Breakaway Roping – Kaydence Crawford Barrels – Spring Pennington Team Roping – Mason Vaculin and Gabe Williams Jase Stout had a resounding win in the Saddle Bronc as the only competitor

When asked how he felt about his win, Jase said, “Winning state proves that hard work pays off, and it also drives me to work harder.” In the breakaway, Kaydence Crawford made a statement by placing in all three rounds and winning the average title by nearly a second. Another picture of consistency, Spring Pennington won the barrel racing championship by making fast, clean runs all week. Finally, Mason Vaculin and Gabe Williams had a successful week by placing in all three rounds of the team roping and winning the average by
