2019 Preview For the first time in over 20 years, someone other than John LaRose will exchange lineup cards before the season opener in Myrtle Beach, SC. When the Wildcats commence the 2019 campaign against Benedict College on February 27, they will be under the direction of new head coach Kevin Casey. Casey comes to the Wildcats from Northeastern University where he was an assistant for four years. Casey was part of a rebuilding process that culminated in 2018 with a 36-21 record and the Huskies' first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2003. Prior to his stint with the Huskies, Casey spent two seasons at his alma mater, Tufts University, coaching alongside his father, John Casey. During his time with the Jumbos, he helped them to a pair of winning seasons, including a NESCAC East regular season title in 2014. The league coaches think Johnson & Wales will be in the mix again this year as the Wildcats were picked third in the preseason poll with 63 points. Suffolk received eight out of nine first place for 80 points while Saint Joseph’s (Me.) was next at 71 points. Offensively Johnson & Wales should have another good year at the plate. Coach Casey has eight players back who hit .295 or better, led by First-Team All-GNAC selections Colby Greenhalgh (catcher) and Raimiel Rodriguez (shortstop). Greenhalgh went on to earn ABCA All-New England honors after finishing in the GNAC top-10 for batting average, runs, doubles, triples and slugging percentage. Rodriguez was GNAC leader for hits and doubles. Junior Vin Amalfitano earned Second-Team All-GNAC honors after hitting .351 with 29 runs scored. He’s joined in the outfield by fellow starter Adam Hagarty. On the mound, Casey will need some returners to increase their role as well as rely on newcomers. James Smiegocki comes back as the most experienced pitcher after recording a GNAC-best 70 strikeouts with a 4.32 ERA in 66.2 innings. Junior Kyle Cutler and senior Josh Mousseau will see their time on the mound increase. Cutler had a team-low 3.89 ERA and Mousseau produced a JWU-best 11.34 strikeouts per nine innings. After returning from spring break, the Wildcats will take on Mass Maritime in a March 16 doubleheader. The home slate begins two days later when JWU hosts crosstown rival Rhode Island College. GNAC action begins March 23 at home in a 12 pm twinbill against Rivier. The non-conference schedule in April will get the Wildcats ready for the GNAC tournament. On April 3rd, JWU hosts Wesleyan, who won the NESCAC West division and advanced to the championship game. April 25 the Wildcats travel to Salve Regina – picked second in the CCC – and the next day take on defending NEWMAC champion Babson. 2 | JWU Baseball 2019

Coaching Staff Kevin Casey - Head Coach, 1st Year

For just the third time in program history, the Johnson & Wales University baseball team has a new head coach. Casey comes to the Wildcats from Northeastern University where he was an assistant for four years. Casey was part of a rebuilding process that culminated in 2018 with a 36-21 record and the Huskies' first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2003. Northeastern won a pair of Colonial Athletic Association regular season titles during his tenure. Prior to his stint with the Huskies, Casey spent two seasons at his alma mater, Tufts University. During his time with the Jumbos, he helped the team to a pair of winning seasons, including a NESCAC East regular season title in 2014 and a trip to the NCAA Division III New England Regional, while also tying the program record for wins in a season (34). Casey began his coaching career in 2010 as an assistant at Daniel Webster College. Casey spent three years at Daniel Webster, where he played an instrumental role in the Eagles' coaching staff that led the program to a 14-win turnaround in 2010 and its first winning season in school history. While at Daniel Webster, Casey helped guide the team to three consecutive 20-win campaigns, two conference championships and the school's first NCAA Division III Regional appearance in 2012. As a player, he was an All-New England third baseman during his sophomore season and served as the team captain in 2008 and 2009. A four-year starter, Casey helped lead the Jumbos to four-straight postseason berths, including three appearances in the NESCAC finals. Coach Casey will work with the Wildcats pitching staff, infielders, and catchers.

Connor McDavitt - Asst. Coach, 1st Year McDavitt comes to the Wildcats after three seasons on the staff at his alma mater, Tufts University. During his time with the Jumbos, Tufts amassed 85 victories, a 28-8 conference record, three NESCAC East titles, two NESCAC championships and two NCAA tournament appearances. The 2014 and 2015 NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year, he also earned a pair of ABCA All-Region selections. Casey served as an assistant coach during McDavitt’s sophomore and junior seasons. McDavitt finished his career in the Tufts’ top 10 for hits, runs and stolen bases. McDavitt will work with the outfielders and the hitters as well as handle the recruiting for the Wildcats.

The 1st baseman from Maple Shade, NJ, was a consistent clutch performer on four of JWU’s early teams. Named to the All GNAC first team in 1998 & 1999, he was an all league second pick in 1997 and an all tournament selection for three straight years. Borgia’s career fielding percentage was a gaudy .990. He made only 8 errors in 780 chances during his entire career. Hitting .426 in 1998 with a slugging percentage of .657, he was also named the MVP in the 1998 tournament, in which the Wildcats won the GNAC title. With over 100 hits in his career, Borgia was a .379 hitter.

ERIC CARSNER - Inducted May 8th, 2009 Among the most feared hitters in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, first baseman Eric Carsner was a three-time all-league selection, and was the GNAC’s Player of the Year in 2004. Selected to the NCAA Division III All-New England team in 2003 and 2004, the native of Luna Pier, Michigan set the Johnson & Wales record for batting average in a single season with a .455 mark in 2002. Two years later, he set the school’s career record for batting average at .431, and his 148 career hits ranked him fifth in JWU history. He finished his outstanding Wildcat career ranked seventh in runs batted in (93), and fifth in home runs (11). Equally adept defensively, Carsner led the Wildcats in fielding percentage in his last two seasons. He was the offensive leader on a team that won the ECAC championship in 2004. In 2005, he became the first Wildcat to sign a professional baseball contract, signing to play with the Dohrem Wild Farmers of the European Baseball League.

DAN HOWARD-Inducted October 1, 2011 With an uncanny ability to pound the strike zone or to come through with the big hit, Coventry, Rhode Island’s Dan Howard was a multi-talented part of the Johnson & Wales baseball team. He graduated as the alltime leader in most pitching categories, including victories (22); career earned run average (2.89), innings pitched (248), complete games (17), and appearances (38). Howard was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2004 and 2005, when his ERA in both seasons ranked among the top 13 in the nation. Named All-New England in 2005, Howard struck out 261 and walked only 39 in his four seasons. A dependable outfielder, his clutch home run in the last inning of the championship game gave JWU a share of the 2005 ECAC title.

Hall of Fame ALEX HURLEY- Inducted October 18, 2014 Hurley, who hails from East Hartford, Conn., was a American Baseball Coaches Association All-American in 2007, and is arguably the best all around player in the history of the Wildcat Program. He was a four-time All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference selection and was twice named an All-New England performer. The GNAC Player of the Year in 2007, he also earned Rookie of the Year honors in 2004. He completely rewrote the JWU record books and is still the all-time leader at both JWU and in the GNAC in hits, runs, RBI, stolen bases, home runs, assists and total bases.

BRAD JACKSON- Inducted October 22, 2016 After his JWU playing career was done in 2008, Jackson became the first and only Wildcat to sign a professional baseball contract. He spent three years playing for teams in New York, New Jersey and Quebec. As a junior and senior, Jackson was a First-Team All-GNAC and All-New England selection. Ranked in the JWU top 10 in a number of offensive categories, head coach John LaRose noted Jackson may be the best defensive player in school history.

John Mackay- Inducted 2018 From the first day he stepped on the diamond, John MacKay was a starter for the Johnson & Wales University baseball team. In his first season, he hit .360 to be named GNAC Rookie of the Year. MacKay would earn a pair of First-Team All-GNAC honors as well as a second-team selection. A native of Pawtucket, RI, he's among the JWU career leaders in 10 categories, including hits and runs where he ranks second. His senior year, MacKay was honored with the department's Ron Bachman Award for Academics, Athletics and Leadership.

Wildcat Outreach The Wildcats are committed to giving back to the community and supporting causes which are important members of our team and their families. The Wildcats have two awareness games scheduled for this season. The first will be a "pink-out" game for Breast Cancer awareness against Suffolk on April 13th. The Wildcats will don special Pink shirts for this game and will collect donations to be made towards breast cancer reasearch. The second game will be the ALS awareness game against Roger Williams University on April 22nd. ALS has become known as baseball's disease after claiming the lives of one of its greatest stars, Lou Gehrig. In more recent years it has found itself back in the spotlight when Boston College baseball player Pete Frates was diagnosed with the incurable disease. Frate's would go on to inspire the ALS Ice-Bucket challenge leading to millions of dollars of funding for ALS in the following years. The Wildcats and Hawks will wear special ALS sweatbands and collect donations for further ALS research during this game. First year Charles DeMatteo inspired the teams support for the Tomorrow Fund which provides daily Financial and Emotional Support to children with cancer and their families treated at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, RI. He created a stat-athon fundraising campaing in which donors will support the Tomorrow Fund based on how many runs scored the Wildcats offense has or how many strikeouts their pitchers record this season. The final cause the Wildcats will be supporting this season is Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva research. Inspired by a family member of Junior Joe Maracic, the Wildcats will wear special bracelets for FOP this year and will conduct further fundraising efforts this season. Finally the Wildcats gave back in the community this past fall by donating their time and efforts at the Ronald McDonald house of Providence assisting with their annual Holiday Party. Giving back is a very important to the Wildcats and we will continue to look for ways to give back and impact the community and our world. JWU Baseball 2019 | 53

Farewell, Skip For nearly two decades there was a consistent guiding hand at the helm of the Johnson & Wales University baseball program. Following the 2018 season, John LaRose announced his retirement as the Wildcats’ skipper. Beyond the wins and losses, coach LaRose built a program that was one of the model teams not only in the GNAC, but the entire New England region. In his final season, the Wildcats posted their eighth-straight 20-win season and they won 20 or more games in 15 of the last 16 years under LaRose. After serving as an assistant, LaRose took over the head coaching duties in 2000 and within two years produced the first 20-win season in school history. LaRose finished his coaching career with a 429-341-6 record. Under LaRose’s direction, the Wildcats have won a pair of GNAC regular season championships and he was named GNAC Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2013.

As expected, JWU players have earned numerous accolades during LaRose’s tenure. In 2007, future JWU Hall of Famer, Alex Hurley became the first player to earn All-America honors. One year, later Brad Jackson, who was inducted into the JWU Hall of Fame in October of 2016, became the first Wildcat to sign a professional baseball contract. In the fall of 2018, John Mackay became the latest LaRose protege inducted into the JWU Hall of Fame. The baseball team’s nine inductees are the most of any Wildcat program. At the conference level, LaRose’s players have earned 97 All-GNAC awards with four Players of the Year, three Pitchers of the Year and four Rookies of the Year. In addition, he has coached nine All-New England selections.

Dating back to his prep days, John LaRose is Rhode Island baseball through and through. An All-State selection at Shea High School in Pawtucket, he went on to play at Providence College where he earned Academic All-Big East honors. He got his first coaching job at North Smithfield High school before going on to be the pitching coach at the University of Rhode Island before taking a job as an assistant coach/ admissions representative at JWU. While all the wins and honors will live on in the record books, what can’t be measured is the impact coach LaRose had on hundreds of student-athletes over the years. He taught them how to play baseball the right way, but also gave his players the tools they needed to be successful in life after JWU. That will be John LaRose’s biggest legacy.
