Georgia urges court to shut down water lawsuit is published by Lanier Publishing, Inc., 3292 Thompson Bridge Rd. #250, Gainesville, GA 30506 (770) 287-1444 Publisher/Editor Alan Hope Production Susan Nish Susan Daniel Creative, Inc. Senior Writer Pamela A. Keene Contributing writers Jane Harrison, Millie Adcox Columnists Glenn Burns, Steve Johnson, Vinnie Mendes, Sara Bagwell. Michael & Sali Duling Travel Editor Bill Vanderford Lakeside is published monthly by Lanier Publishing, Inc. based in Gainesville, GA, with distribution in some 300 locations around Lake Lanier and other areas. By Jane Harrison Georgia accuses Florida of spewing rhetoric and questionable data in the latest volley in the water wars between the two states. “After more than six years of litigation, it is now clear that Florida’s case was built on rhetoric and not on facts,” wrote Georgia attorney Craig S. Primus in a June 26 filing that strongly refutes Florida’s arguments. “On this comprehensive record, Florida has failed to prove its case,” Georgia declares in the document urging justices to shut down Florida’s claims. In the June filing, Georgia attorneys defend a special master’s report that ruled in Georgia’s favor, denying Florida’s claims that Georgia caused harm downstream by using too much water from the Flint and Chattahoochee rivers. The two Georgia rivers merge near the state line at Lake Seminole and flow out as the Apalachicola River in the Florida Panhandle. Florida filed suit in Oct. 2013 asking the Supreme Court to allocate water in hopes of salvaging the Apalachicola Bay oyster industry, which needs fresh river water to nourish oyster beds. Oyster fisheries collapsed after a

2012 drought hit both states. Initially, stakeholders on Lake Lanier feared the legal action would threaten the level and usages of the largest reservoir on the river system. Lanier supplies water to metro Atlanta and supports lake-related business and tourism-related economies in counties it touches. Instead, Florida’s suit targeted Georgia agriculture along the Flint River, which uses more water than all other entities combined. The Supreme Court in June 2018 voted 5-4 to give Florida another chance to prove its case after the initial special master denied Florida’s claims on a technicality. The second special master, Paul J. Kelly, also denied Florida’s claims in his recommendations to the court in Dec. 2019. Kelly stated that Georgia’s water use is reasonable. He noted Georgia conservation efforts and contrasted Georgia’s larger economy and population with the tiny region at stake on the gulf. He also quoted witnesses who blamed Apalachicola’s woes on Florida's mismanagement of resources. In the end, he cited evidence that the cost to Georgia of limiting water consumption

would be greater than the benefit of potential additional flow into Florida. Since his report, both states have batted replies and surreplies. Georgia’s recent filing responded to Florida’s accusations that Kelly did not invest sufficient time and effort into the case and contrasted his work with that of 2014-2018 special master Ralph I. Lancaster, who has since passed away. “Special Master Kelly thoroughly canvassed the extensive trial record and answered every question necessary for the Court to determine whether Florida is entitled to an equitable apportionment,” said the Georgia sur-reply.

“His 81-page report carefully details how Florida’s case fails in every respect. Indeed, Florida’s evidentiary failings were so glaring that Special Master Kelly concluded that Florida had failed to prove its case even after giving Florida the benefit of the doubt on several key legal and factual disputes. This Court should accept the Special Master’s reasoned recommendations.” With both replies and surreplies on record, the next step in the legal action was still uncertain as of mid-July. The case did not appear on the Supreme Court’s October term calendar. Both states have spent an excess of $40 million in litigation costs.

Gainesville, lake counties sign on to ‘friend of court’ brief By Jane Harrison The city of Gainesville, Gwinnett County and Forsyth County are among a group of water suppliers who want the Supreme Court to note that Florida is not targeting Lake Lanier in its lawsuit over water in a river system that flows from north Georgia into the Florida Panhandle. “Florida has abandoned any claim that water use in Metro At-

lanta is excessive, inefficient, or unreasonable,” states the July 2 Amicus Brief filed by King & Spaulding on behalf of the Atlanta Regional Commission and nine counties and municipalities that get their water from the Apalachicola-ChattahoocheeFlint river system. Lake Lanier, metro Atlanta’s major water supplier, is the largest ACF reservoir. See Brief, page 39

Hammock Hollow is a cool place to hang out The latest addition of Vision 2030 Public Art is now on display along the shores of Lake Lanier. The colorful structure, named Hammock Hollow, sits at Laurel Park in Hall County. It is built with colorful metal frames along with recycled sail cloths. It creates “lounging” for one or more (as in the case of the Richard twins). The structure also has three empty hook areas for visitors who want to attach their own hammocks. According to designers, a focus of the project was to create seats, inspired by hammocks, that were made out of recycled or sustainable materials. The recycled sail cloth seats are made in California and connects the piece to the lake and the history of sailing and boating on Lake Lanier. The project is the result of a partnership between Hall County Parks & Leisure and Vision 2030 Public Art. “The beauty of public art is how the public engages, interacts and connects with a piece. Hammock Hollow allows people to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Laurel Park while catching sweeping views of the lake. With three permanent seats and a variety of ways a person can connect their own hammock to the structure, there are endless uses for Hammock Hollow,” said Allyson Everett, Vision 2030 Public Art board member.

Funds from the 2018 Public Art Block Party were used for this project. Hall County Parks & Leisure provided the location and will maintain the structure/seats.

Hall County hearing August 13 to relax erosion ordinances By Pamela A. Keene Hall County Commissioners are proposing loosening restrictions on the amount of land that can be disturbed at one time during construction, but lake advocacy groups are against the idea. “With the erosion and siltation from both non-point-source and runoff from large pieces of land that are exposed during construction, relaxing the ordinance will do damage to Lake Lanier’s watershed and the lake,” said Jennifer Flowers, executive director of the Lake Lanier Association. “It is vital that the tighter restrictions stay in place to protect the watershed and the lake’s quality. Erosion and siltation are major contributors to degradation of the lake that provides drinking water and recreation to millions of people.” The commission is holding a second reading of a proposal to relax erosion and siltation ordinances on Thursday, August 13. The association is urging its constituents and area citizens to make their voices known in opposition of the change. The group is also asking citizens to email their commissioners. Addresses are listed on the group’s website at lakelanier.org.

The Thursday, August 13, meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the Hall County Government Center at 2875 Browns Bridge Rd. “The association provided comments in opposition at the first reading in late July and will be Muddy water present again on Lake Lanier. August 13,” Flowers said. “We are also reaching out to the commissioners ahead of the meeting to make our points known.” The county ordinance currently requires that only 20 acres of land can be disturbed at a time on construction sites; the proposed change will extend that figure to 50 acres. “With so much dirt exposed, it is difficult to control the runoff, erosion and sedimentation during rainfall,” said Dale Caldwell, director of the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper in Gainesville. “This leads to even more pollution of our waterways. And, while these ordinances have been on the books for a number of years, we cannot allow them to be relaxed.” Pollution from erosion, runoff

and sedimentation are most likely to affect Lake Lanier, area rivers, creeks and streams. Polluted water is more difficult to treat for drinking water, plus it affects area wildlife, including fish and birds. “State standards in place are not protective enough for our waterways,” Caldwell said. “And while Hall County is trying to loosen the restrictions, we understand that Forsyth County is looking to tighten their restrictions. “These ordinances are in place not only to protect our waterways and downstream users, but also to protect the developers themselves from possible future lawsuits from downstream users,” he said. Enjoying the lake in the time of COVID-19: Times have changed By Pamela A. Keene The COVID-19 lockdown this spring hasn’t deterred people from enjoying Lake Lanier. Even with social distancing still in place, many of the lake’s parks, restaurants, marinas, boat rentals and other groups are seeing a significant increase in visitation over last year. “We’ve seen more traffic since early March than normal,” said Janice Wagner, manager of Sunrise Cove Marina. “People are just being out and enjoying their boats, stay-cationing with their families.” From boat rentals and fuel sales to people purchasing new and used boats, activity is brisk around the lake. “Since people can’t travel, they’re coming to the lake, they’re using their own boats or renting, buying more fuel and even purchasing new and used boats,” said Philip Burton with Gainesville Marina. “Our biggest challenge is keeping inventory because manufacturers closed during the early stages of the pandemic, and now it’s tough for them to keep the pipeline filled.” He said manufacturers’ ven-

dors who supply various components and parts are also back ordered. “People are getting great prices for their used boats, and some are trading in their boats when they purchase new.” In the beginnings of social distancing back in late March, the warm spring drew boaters to the lake, people who would have normally been at work during the week. “Visitation for June in our parks has been 30 percent higher than the same time last year,” said Tim Rainey, operations project manager with the Corps of Engineers at Lake Lanier. “Although we kept the parks closed a bit longer than we anticipated, on Memorial Day weekend visitation in our day-use parks was significantly higher.” He attributes the increased visitation to students being out of school and the restrictions for extended travel. “The beaches along the coast were closed, so people did the next best thing: they came to the lake instead. “While we continue experiencing higher than normal visitation, we ask for your cooperation by not entering parks that are full,

and to park only in designated spaces. Non-emergency calls may also experience delays in response,” he said. Rainey said that the Corps is also working with a reduced staff, on the recreation side and in shoreline management. “Three of our rangers out of seven left here for already

planned transfers on the recreation side,” he said. “And while we continue to do site visits in shoreline management, the office is still closed, so we’re having to work solely by phone and email. People are working at home, and we’re doing to the best we can to accommodate requests. Due to the volume of calls we receive,

responses to voicemail may be delayed. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience. “Additionally, two of our administrative staff, who support shoreline management are out. One has been deployed in the national Guard and another went on active duty,” he said.

Effects of COVID-19 on Lanier real estate market By Bev Knight Based on the robust summer sales, it is reasonable to conclude that COVID-19 is having little impact on the lake real estate market. The pandemic and other recent news from the crowded cities are having a profound effect on both the demand and supply of lake homes. Here are some of the impacts you may see. • Many potential buyers who have been on the fence about buying a lake home have finally pulled the trigger. After months of quarantine and minimal human contact, it became clear to them that life on the water is better than life in a crowded city. • If you’ve been to the Atlanta airport lately, you know that it

looks like a ghost town. People are afraid to fly, so they choose a staycation rather than a vacation. Where would you rather be, in the congested city, or surrounded by a beautiful lake? In addition to their own recreational uses, savvy investors are offering short term, VRBO-type rentals of their lake homes to offset the cost. Again, if you’re not able to fly to the Caribbean this year, why not drive 45 minutes to a gorgeous VRBO home on Lake Lanier? • New construction is expected to slow down considerably as housing elements made in China are no longer available. There is already a huge shortage of pressure-treated wood, appliances, and other necessities for new homes. This may also affect reno-

vators and home flippers. • For years, homebuyers have insisted on an open concept floor plan. After spending months cooped up with their families in one big room, they realize that walls plus doors equal privacy. Homes with walled-off rooms may be coming back into style. • By the same token, demand for smaller houses has been the trend in recent years. With so much time spent in the residence, homeowners may begin to ask for a little more elbow room in future purchases. • On the supply side, fewer sellers are opting to put their lake homes on the market. This has caused an extreme shortage in Lanier homes for sale and has See Covid, page 19

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC PARK With Olympics postponed, Lanier paddlers see opportunities By Jane Harrison The postponement of the summer Olympic Games in Tokyo churned disappointment and stirred new opportunities on Lake Lanier’s Olympic waters. One paddler who is already Olympicbound and others who hope to race under the torch in Tokyo next year are training toward their dreams under the blazing summer sun where Olympians raced in 1996. “I was super excited; then the pandemic hit,” said Nevin Harrison, 18, whose record American performance in a 2019 world championship qualified her for the 2020 Olympics. When the Games were put off until next summer due to the coronavirus, her dream sunk, temporarily. “It hit me hard … I already had my spot,” she said after finishing a tough morning practice last month at Lake Lanier Olympic Park.

Stanton Collins, 26, pulled his kayak from the water after an intense workout that July morning. If the world had not changed, he could have been in Tokyo at the time or he could have begun a new chapter in his life. Instead, he continues to pursue a goal he set as a teenager in the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club. Collins sees the rescheduling of the Games as an opportunity to get stronger and faster. When the International Olympic Committee announced the cancellation in late March, Collins was still working toward an Olympic slot. But both

paddlers are putting in 30-hour weeks on the water, in the weight room, or on the run. Training for the Olympics is a full-time job, not a paid position in the U.S. as it is in some other countries. “There’s no way to work and go to school” and train for the Olympics, remarked Team USA Coach Zsolt Szadovszki. And, Szadovszki there’s no time to stop for a pandemic. When competitions and boat houses closed down, the U.S. sprint canoe/kayak head coach rented a house on Lake Lanier and quarantined with five Olympic hopeful paddlers. “We were three months in the same house. As a coach you really don’t want to do that,” said Szadovszki, who also serves as LCKC head coach. Collins, who lives in minutes away, met them on the water after they launched from the rental house. The coach loaded up weight equipment for an outdoor gym. “Everyone stayed healthy” and fit, he said. To keep the competitive spirit alive when official starting lines were silent, Szadovszki devised “imaginary fantasy races” when they raced among themselves. “I asked them to stay focused,” he said. Harrison honed her initial focus on the Olympic Games at See Olympics, page 23

Get out: Spend the day at Olympic Park By Jane Harrison Folks yearning to get outside for relaxation, fun times, or a thrill are filling the boat ramps and parks around Lake Lanier. Lake Lanier Olympic Park, the hottest tourist destination in Gainesville/Hall County, is experiencing a surge of visitors renting kayaks and paddle boards, learning to paddle, and enjoying activities offered by the Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club, Lake Lanier Rowing Club, and other entities. “People want to get out,” said LCKC spokesperson Jim 0’Dell on a recent summer morning as kids in LCKC summer camp hit the water, dragon boaters docked a long boat, and rowing newbies returned oars to the LLRC boathouse port. “Things kicked off in a big

way” after the boathouse opened in June, O’Dell said. People pent up during the coronavirus lockdown escaped to the full, blue, and open water where they could rent a kayak and paddle in peace in a no-wake zone at the legacy Olympic venue. People from Atlanta, Florida, the local vicinity and tourists just driving through drop in on weekends or reserve a rental during the week. For some, the experience is their first excursion outside the house since April. O’Dell mentioned a father and son who rented a kayak and went fishing on Father’s Day. It was their first venture away from home in three weeks. LCKC also hosted a pop in family reunion when a group of 40 showed up to paddle together on a weekend morning. The club

put the group in dragon boats and kayaks. Staggering positions in dragon boats helps with social distancing. O’Dell said the club is persnickety about spraying disinfectant on life jackets and paddles. Several activities remain on the LLOP calendar as the unofficial end of summer approaches this month. Lake lovers can start the day with Sunrise Yoga at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday mornings and then grab a paddle after breakfast to spend a day at LLOP. The fun might continue until sundown with a moonlit paddle. Thoughts on lotteries in general and my luck in particular

If you saw the movie “Weekend at Bernie’s,” you’ll remember the beautiful island and especially the lighthouse where most of the action takes place. The movie was filmed on Bald Head Island off the coast of North Carolina. My cousin has a house on the island, where we’ve spent many restful days hanging out. From when you first arrive you can imagine you are on the set of the movie. You must take a passenger ferry across the strait to be met by a golf cart and then drive along the sandy paths that honeycomb the entire place. Looming over everything is “Old Baldy,” the 200-plus year old lighthouse that dominates everything. I’ve always had a fascination with lighthouses and this one is a real winner. She was built in 1817 and has warned ships safely off “Frying Pan Shoal” ever since. My cousin and I were on our way to pick up groceries in her golf cart when we spied her friend with a table set up next to an “EZ GO” golf cart that looked exactly like a Rolls Royce! We stopped to chat and found that she was selling raffle tickets for the benefit of the Lighthouse Fund. My cousin said she’d take one and of course I chimed in that I’d

When he replied “No, I never win anything,” she said, “You gotta buy some tickets, it’s ten million dollars!” He went back into the store and when he came out, she asked “How many did you buy?” he said “One.” She said “No! No! You gotta buy a whole bunch or you won’t win.” He told her if you bought more than one you were betting against yourself, besides, he had never won anything in his life. The next morning, Donnie got up early and walked down to the corner convenience store for a cup of coffee and the newspaper. He checked the winning lottery number in the paper and bought a ticket for that number, put it in his wallet, and walked back. When the household arose, he was drinking his coffee and reading the paper. His host was all excited and began checking her numbers calling out “YES, YES, no” and so on for all 20 tickets without winning anything. Then she asked if he had checked his ticket. He told her no, and said he never won anything in his life. He pulled out the ticket he had

bought that morning and asked her to check it. She grabbed the ticket and the newspaper and began reading. “Yes, yes, YES, YES! YES!!” until finally, she yelled out “You’re rich! YOU’RE RICH!” He said no, there must be some mistake. He’d never won anything in his life, and to check the date. She said “Look, it’s today’s date, YOU’RE RICH! “He replied “Hey, you are acting like an idiot. If it means that much to you, give me a dollar and the ticket is yours.” She quickly handed him a dollar and started running around the house screaming “I’M RICH,” at the top of her lungs. Donnie was afraid it had gotten out of hand so he told her husband what he had done and asked if he should put her wise. The husband sat back drinking his coffee and said “No, let’s wait ‘til she runs down a bit.” Meanwhile, back in Flowery Branch, do you have any idea how cool it is riding around the neighborhood in a Rolls Royce golf cart? Well, neither do I because I certainly didn’t win the thing. What was I thinking? Mendes has been sailing all his life and on Lake Lanier for the past 25 years.

Life in retirement keeps Mark and Chris Lusink on their toes

Shore Lines

From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special. By Pamela A. Keene on’t believe Mark Lusink when he claims he’s retired. The former owner of Boating Atlanta and long-time Lake Lanier advocate and businessman didn’t retire eight years ago. He just shifted his focus. Growing up on Lanier, Lusink has seen the lake from its early days when waters weren’t crowded with boats on the weekends. “I can remember as a teenager seeing Bona Allen’s boat on Lake Allatoona before Lake Lanier was built, as well as others who first discovered the joys of what was then a brand-new place for on-the-water recreation,” he said. “The lake was just filling in the mid-1950s and our family came up here from Buckhead on the weekends.” Lusink’ s father was one of the founders of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 22 on Lanier in 1958. The family boated on Allatoona and Lanier and Lusink grew to love the water and boating. When he graduated from high school, he headed to Georgia Tech to study engineering. As a Vietnam veteran, he was a Navy diver, navigator, and ship’s executive officer. He ended up building nuclear submarines for Litton Industries before coming back to Atlanta and opening Boating and Sailing Atlanta in the early 1970s. The first store was in an old one-pump gas station next to Lazy Days Houseboats on Holiday Road. As the business grew he needed more space, and by

D

1980 Boating Atlanta expanded to Buford Highway, where it remained for 40 years. In the meantime, Lusink and his wife, Chris, who met through the boating business – she was a rep with Honda and called on him as a business owner – lived for several years in North Hall. They moved north to Lula around 2006 and purchased acreage and built a home. Ready to retire? In 2012, he sold Boating Atlanta to Nathan Rhodes and retired from the boating business. “I knew Nathan’s family from living in Buckhead,” Lusink said. “My mother used to buy cakes and bakery items regularly from Rhodes’ Bakery and I always knew that Nathan came from good people.” The couple turned their attention to the farm, raising chickens, growing vegetables, keeping bees, and living what he calls “a simpler life.” And although both Mark and Chris supposedly slowed down, they became even more involved in the community and their miniature dollhouse business, with Mark designing and selling dollhouse kits and Chris continuing to market miniature furniture and furnishings for dollhouses, which she began doing in the late 1990s. Mountain Miniatures sells oneinch and half-inch scale furniture and accessories to thousands of miniature dollhouse collectors around the world. “My dollhouse building started in 2004 when Chris saw a picture

in a magazine of a dollhouse that she really liked, so I figured out how to build it for her,” he said. “We built the house using a band saw and using all high-end finishes. It was totally electrified and even has a slate-shingled roof.” For nearly 15 years, the couple’s basement has contained a complex CNC machine for cutting dollhouse parts, plus a new laser machine for doing precision work of making even more complex high-end dollhouse kits. In another part of the basement, Lusink’s HO scale models of train layouts of the City of Buford and Lula as they appeared in 1925. “I’m still working on this model, and probably will be for a long time, because I want to get everything about it just right.” Preservation and revitalization Running a farm, managing two businesses, keeping up with three sons, their wives and five grandchildren ranging in age from toddlers to teens, plus another granddaughter on the way, keep Mark and Chris busy. But as if that’s not enough, from the time they moved to Lula, the couple has been very involved in helping revitalize downtown Lula. Chris is the president of the Lula Belton Historical Society and has been collecting information, photos, and artifacts about the city’s history. “Our goal is to one day open a small museum here,” she said. “There is so much history here and it needs to be preserved and remembered.” In the ’20s and ’30s Lula was the major Southern Railway refueling stop for coal and water halfway between Atlanta and Greenville with 12 passenger trains stopping daily. Now Amtrak passes by at 50 miles per hour on its way to and from New York.

She said that she is actively seeking additional historic items and photographs to add to the museum. They started by purchasing the former Adams Building, which was built in 1884 and had been unoccupied since the 1970s, the brick building was at one time a major clothing and dry goods store. “It had been boarded up since the 1970s, so we came in and completely remodeled the interior and rebuilt the two-story porch on the front, which had been torn down in the ’40s,” Lusink said. “The downstairs space has been rented to a retail business – Around the Corner Florist – and the upstairs has a two-bedroom apartment that is rented. We felt that it was important to bring some residential space into downtown to help with revitalization.” Next, they purchased the Poole Building, which had been destined for demolition. They partnered with the city to provide public restrooms in the back 25 feet and then leased the front of the building to “At the Tracks Restaurant,” which serves highend lunches and dinners and also caters. It’s next to the city’s Veterans Memorial and Water Park, which is a major draw downtown. City officials recently renovated the historic Lula Train Depot in keeping with the revitalization of the downtown area. The newly renovated building is now available for community functions, city festivals, and concerts, plus private functions. “We have had amazing support from the mayor and council,” Lusink said. “We’re all working together to bring life back to Lula and draw more businesses and residents here. We still want to keep our small-town feel but it

would be nice to have a larger grocery store close by.” In 2014, the Lusinks purchase the Morris Building, built in 1920 as a small gas station, and over the years expanding to a hardware, clothing and home goods store. “The Morris Building was actually added onto several times and expanded over the years to 6,000 square feet,” he said. “With a complete renovation it’s now home to four businesses, including a real estate developer’s office, a dog groomer, a nail and tanning salon and another restaurant – Amanda’s Farm to Fork.” Now that their work in Lula is completed, the Lusinks have turned their attention to Demorest, where they are restoring the historic train depot. Demorest was a stop on the old Tallulah Falls Railway and the current structure was built in 1903. “We’re bringing it back to what it looked like originally, but we’re turning it into several apartments that we hope to rent to faculty and staff at Piedmont College,” he said. “I’ve been a train buff and so bringing new life to an old train station just seems to fit. And it’s right in line with our shared love of history.” Meanwhile, the couple has purchased a mountain home in Suches, Georgia. The property has an asparagus field, fruit trees, and a pond they will stock with trout. “It’s at the edge of the Chattahoochee National Forest and there are so many trails, amazing wildlife, and rhododendrons there,” Chris said. “Now, the key is finding the time to spend there and enjoy it. We’re adding it to our priority list. We try to get up there as much as we can. It’s another place for us to slow down and enjoy our lives together.”

10th annual Sweep the Hooch set for socially distanced clean-up By Pamela A. Keene For the 10th year, Chattahoochee Riverkeeper is hosting Sweep the Hooch to clean up trash, garbage and debris along the shores of the Chattahoochee River. More than 1,000 volunteers are expected to turn out on Saturday, August 29. “We’re asking people to register ahead of time so that we can open communications between the volunteers and site leaders to have a safe, socially distanced

event,” said Mallory Pendleton with the Riverkeeper’s Headwaters office in Gainesville. “We have a comprehensive list of sites all along the river so that people can see where they can volunteer.”

In the past nine years, volunteers have removed more than 113 tons of trash from the shorelines. More than 40 sites along a 100-mile stretch of the river and tributaries have been organized. “Because of COVID-19 and our safety concerns for our volunteers and the community, we are also offering a number of suggestions to help with keeping the Chattahoochee River clean,” Pendleton said. “Explore the river on your own and pick up trash as you do. And to maintain good health of your home and municipal sewage pipes, please only flush toilet paper. Do not flush

paper towels or wipes, because they can very easily clog up pipes. Even if wipes are labeled ‘flushable,’ they take longer to break down, so avoid flushing them as well.” CRK is also collecting donations from this event, with a goal of raising $10,000 that will be used for programming, education, research and advocacy. “One way that people can help generate awareness and funds is to post on their own Facebook pages what they like and why they appreciate the Chattahoochee and share this with their friends,” Pendleton said. “And

we’d like them to link to our website or our Facebook page so that even more people know about us and our work.” There are a number of sites in the headwaters, around Lake Lanier and above Buford Dam that will serve as satellite collection points. “People can walk the shorelines, paddle on the river or wade to collect trash,” she said. “It will certainly be a fun day for recreation while working toward a great cause – helping keep the Chattahoochee River clean.” Registration is open now at www.chattahoochee.org.

Here’s why we get spectacular sunsets on Lanier On my Facebook page, you will generally see a great many sunset pictures from viewers all over north Georgia. And many of them are from Lake Lanier. July and August have been great months for snapping shots of the beautiful yellow, orange, and red hues of the canvas Mother Nature paints in the western sky almost every evening (and many mornings too) in mid to late summer. This time of year we get a lot of moisture that moves into north Georgia with a prevailing southwest wind off the Gulf of Mexico. We also have a little more pollution this time of year because the air is a bit more stagnant. The number of fronts moving in that would normally scour out the stagnant air are essentially non-existent. Therefore, the small particles of particulate matter remain suspended in the air. We have been seeing some incredible sunrises this past month. Sunsets have been even more spectacular. The white sunlight we see during the day is a mixture of all the colors in the rainbow. Some colors have a short wavelength. Some colors have a long wavelength. Consider ocean waves coming ashore along the beach. The distance from one wave to the one following it is the wavelength. Light also has a wavelength. The color blue and the cool colors of the rainbow have short wavelengths. The warmer

colors like orange and red, have much longer wavelengths. Glenn When the sun sets in Burns the west, there are more particles of dust, sand, salt, and pollution on Lanier the horizon. When Outlook shorter wavelength colors hit that, the color becomes scattered. For example, when the color blue hits the debris, it gets scattered and cannot penetrate through. On the other hand, the yellows, oranges, and reds of the sun, with the longer wavelength of light, blast through and are not blocked. That’s why we see the reddish hues at sunset. I expect with the prevailing wind this summer off the Gulf of Mexico, there will be more particles in the air, ranging from pollution to sea salt. Watch for more brilliant sunsets this month on the lake. They will continue to be spectacular! The August outlook from the Climate Prediction Center is for continued above average temperatures and above average rainfall. Also, remember the tropics will become very active this month. I would expect, after a lull in July, we will see tropical storm and hurricane formation on the increase. Remember, the revised hurricane outlook is now calling for 20 named storms this year. We’ve already had six named storms, so we have a way to go! Glenn Burns is chief meteorologist for WSB-TV in Atlanta.

Boating Atlanta moves to north Gainesville on Ga. 365 By Pamela A. Keene After 40 years in its location on Atlanta Highway in Buford, Boating Atlanta is moving to a brand-new built-from-the-groundup store on Ga. 365 later this month. With 44,000 square feet, the store will include a new-boat showroom, service department, brokerage and parts department. “Everything will be inside, airconditioned and under one roof,” said Nathan Rhodes, who has owned the business since 2012. “We’ll have room for 60-plus boats inside, plus our service department will be state-of-the-art with the newest diagnostic technology.” Boating Atlanta has a storied history on Lake Lanier. Founded by Mark Lusink in the early 1970s, (see related Shorelines article on page 18), the store first opened on Holiday Road. It was one of the first boat dealers on Lake Lanier to move up from Atlanta. In 1980, the business moved to Buford Highway. Lusink sold Boating Atlanta to Nathan Rhodes eight years ago. Rhodes also owns N&C Marine in Martin, Georgia. With the widening of Atlanta Highway, the store lost a good

portion of its front parking lot to road right-of-way. “It was a good time to seek a new location,” Rhodes said. “We found this great 4.5-acre property and are very excited about moving this month. By moving north of Gainesville, we’re able to broaden our customer-service reach to serve Lake Rabun, Chatuge Lake, Seed Lake, Nottely Lake, Lake Tugalo and others. “Our move is also putting us much closer to the new Marine Technology curriculum at Lanier Technical College, which is filling a great need for boat mechanics in North Georgia and beyond,” said Rhodes, who is also president of the Metro Atlanta Marine Trade Association. “We’re supporting the program in as many ways as we can, including giving students part-time jobs

and hands-on training here at our service department.” Boating Atlanta represents a wide range of manufacturers: Skeeter, Caymas, Hurricane, Tidewater, Sea Hunt, Four Winns, Trifecta and Qwest. It is an authorized Yamaha dealer. “We will have 10 employees in new sales with a combined 50 years of experience, so our staff at the new store can help customers with finding the right boat for their needs,” he said. “Boat sales continue to be brisk this year. Because of the pandemic, people are looking for ways to get outdoors and they’re buying boats, especially since they’re not able to take extended vacations this summer.” The new Boating Atlanta store sits alongside Ga. 365 at 2932 Ramsey Rd. age 15 after winning multiple medals in women’s canoe at the 2017 ICF Olympic Hopes Regatta in Račice, Czech Republic. She encored that performance in 2018 and piled on more gold in single women’s canoe in 1000-, 500-, and 200-meters in the USA 2019 Team Trials in Oklahoma City. The versatile athlete from Seattle set her aim on the 200meter distance, an all-out sprint with split seconds separating finishers. She was the first American canoeist to win gold in an International Canoe Federation World Cup. Harrison is poised to make history next summer racing in the Olympic premiere of the women’s single canoe 200, or WC1 200. “It’s the only C1 event for women,” she said. “It’s the shortest and fastest,” she added. Top women finishers cross the line in about 44 seconds. “I’m shooting for 43.” She feels her success is adding to the rising popularity of canoeing for women. The sport requires tremendous agility, core strength and upper body muscle to propel a narrow, tippy vessel through the water while balancing on one knee. And to do it fast takes hours of repetitions on the water and on the pull up bar.

Nevin had to acclimate to Georgia summer after coming here from Seattle to train. “I’m not used to the heat,” she said, “but the course is good and the people are welcoming.” She and another athlete are renting a vacation house six minutes from LLOP, so it’s easy to get in a nap between twice-a-day practices. She, like Collins, orients an entire lifestyle toward an athletic goal. The journey requires just as much rest and nutrition as it does physical training. “You only get better when you’re recovering” from the tough workouts, Collins said. He drives 15-minutes home to rest and eat between practices. The kayaker recently set his aim on the 200-meter distance after years of medaling in 500- and 1000meter single and double men’s kayak races. He pours in about five hours a day training for a race that “on a perfect day” is won in about 34 seconds. Less than a second separates the top 20 men in the K1 200, his coach noted. Midsummer practices reach a feverish intensity. “I feel shaky” after grueling sessions on the water, Collins said. Collins has two chances to qualify for the Olympics next

spring. He must either win his event in the Pan Am Games in Brazil or finish fastest of those who are not yet qualified for the Games in the ICF World Cup in Germany. Coach Szadovszki sees an upside for his athletes in the interim between this summer, qualifying races, and the Olympics. “Hands down, five or six still have a chance” for Olympic berths, he said. “Nevin is just getting faster and stronger. Stanton is learning the 200 on the (world class) level. It will give us a much better payload of time to extend that learning curve.” In mid-summer, Olympic hopefuls still were still awaiting details about competitions that will shape their year. They were unsure about traveling outside the country to race or train. In the meantime, Szadovszki plans to keep his athletes paddling on Lanier through August or September, then give them a month off before “rolling back hard” in the late fall and winter. Then he may take them to Florida for winter practice. This time next year, this summer’s work on Lanier might pay off with gold, silver or bronze and the pride of competing in the world’s most celebrated games.

Origin of ‘show your true colors’ In today’s environment, the maxim of “show your true colors” can sometimes imply a negative meaning. The specific phrase has origins from long ago – with the use of flags or pennants by warships. It was a common practice involving sea warfare back during that period for ships to hoist their national flags before engaging in close-quarters battle. Even back then, this was a very effective strategy – using misinformation to gain an advantage. In the 17th century, it was a common tactic for Spanish ships to hoist false flags, thus confusing their enemy. This practice introduced a seldom-used term: “to bamboozle” into our language. The phrase “showing your true colors” lends itself to many things in our world today, above and beyond its maritime origin. A prime example of a nautical flag, and one that a lot of people have never seen or recognized, is the U.S. Coast Guard Ensign. Approved by President John Adams and first raised on August 1, 1799, to signify the United States ship that carried the banner was a

cutter of the Revenue-Marine, eventually in time becoming the U.S. Coast Guard. The premier maritime law enforcement branch, initially part of the Department of the Treasury, was formed by the combination of the Life-Saving Service and the Revenue Cutter Service on January 28, 1915, signed by President

Woodrow Wilson. When underway at sea on patrol or mission, flying the flag granted the Cutter Captain the authority to use extreme measures, if necessary, to stop a vessel. Even today, a USCG Cutter during a law enforcement mission must fly the Ensign. During my career serving on many Coast Guard assets, the flag was always prominently flown when underway regardless of what we were doing or where we were headed. A full description of the flag and other links can be found at www.seaflags.us/uscg/. The USCG Ensign speaks volumes about the organization, its mission, and the men and women that answer the call to protect and serve along the nation’s waterways. When you see the USCG Auxiliary on the lake, whose primary mission is recreational boating safety, know they are an integral part of that flag and the group of professionals it proudly represents. This is without a doubt … our true colors. Steve Johnson, US Coast Guard (ret). is with CPO Johnson, Inc.

Martin Docks opens second location for showroom By Pamela A. Keene These days, docks aren’t what they used to be. Just ask Glenn Martin, third-generation owner of Lake Lanier’s oldest dock company – Martin Docks. “My grandfather built the first dock on Lake Lanier in 1956 for JD Jewell, and it’s still in use today,” said Martin. “It’s been modified several times, adding slips, taking away slips and adding walkways all around and now back to a single slip with decking and platforms.” He also knows how docks have changed from those early days. “Especially in the past decade or two, docks have gone from just a place to tie up your boat to an extension of your home and entertainment space,” he said. “In fact, sometimes people’s docks are better decorated than their homes on the lake, because that’s where they spend most of their time.” From adding covered upper decks and boat lifts to expanding walkways and using highend materials, today’s docks see use almost year-round. “Roof height is the most noticeable change – at least another 4 to 6 feet – because of

all the wake and surf boats, plus people want their cruisers and pontoons under cover,” he said. “By the time you add a lift and cover the boat, it’s just got to be higher. And we’ve been replacing a lot of older docks because of this in the past decade or so.” Martin’s grandfather G.H. Martin started building docks in the mid-1950s. By 1963, he moved the business to its current location on Ga. 53/Dawsonville Highway across from Gainesville Marina. Today, that building on 3.5 acres is the company’s production facility where all new docks are built. Martin Docks recently acquired a new showroom just down the road on another 3.5-acre tract of land. The 7,000-

square-foot building is easy to spot; there’s a full-sized model of the latest design in docks just outside the front door. “We moved all our sales operations to the new building to free up room in the production facility,” Martin said. “We needed every bit of space over there because business continues to grow.” Martin Docks currently has more than 45 employees. Martin said he anticipates growing the business even more and he’s looking for another four to five qualified employees. The company also builds shoreline steps, repairs and remodels existing docks, installs See Martin, page 35

Boats, cars to show off at Shine Showdown By Jane Harrison Glistening boats, dazzling cars, and tricked out trucks will grace the water and line up on the pavement at Lake Lanier Olympic Park 4-9 p.m. Aug. 22 in the first “Shine Showdown” at the former Olympic site. Organized by Gainesville native AJ Zurzolo, the car and boat show is the newest cultural expansion of the site originally developed for Olympic paddling and rowing. Zurzolo, owner of North Atlanta Custom Detailing in Gainesville, chose LLOP for the third annual Shine Showdown to exhibit what the business can deliver to the boating community, which makes up about half his work. “The venue is a signature site for Gainesville,” he said, and a perfect fit for a fun day by the lake with customized boats, cars, trucks, children’s activities, music, public safety vehicle displays, food trucks and beverages. “There’s a lot of room for everybody,” he said, at the lakeside park with a grandstand, plaza, boat dock, and ample parking. Zurzolo expects a large turnout of boaters and car enthusiasts to enter the show that spotlights everything from classic to exotic cars, trucks, and boats. “Anything

you can think of that you’d like to put on display, we’ll have an award and a class for it, he said. He described the event as a showcase of what custom detailers can do. Customizing with high tech products and finishes protects the investments boaters and auto aficionados pour into their vehicles, he said. Proper maintenance and washing methods ensure the luster lasts. Zurzolo sees high demands from boaters looking to customize and detail their vessels. “Anything from ski boats to houseboats, we’re able to service,” he said, including audio upgrades, shining up dull hulls, and color-coding paint jobs. Proceeds from the event benefit Caleb’s Cause, a non-profit organization that helps families in need and focuses on assisting with medical expenses. Shine Showdown admission is free. Hydrangeas: I’d rather have pink over blue

Last month was all about blueberries, but now they’re gone until next season. We netted more than 100 pounds from our 12 bushes. Soon it will be time to prune, but not until fall. As the summer progresses, hydrangeas take center stage. With nearly a half-dozen varieties that grow well in North Georgia, it’s hard to pick a favorite. From the large white blooms of Annabelle to the distinctive Oak Leaf with cone-shaped bloom heads, the changeable pink, lavender, purple or blue Mopheads, and sun-loving Panicles, you can fill your yard from shade areas to full sun with a full summer of flowering. Mopheads Their wide range of colors is generally determined by the PH of the soil. If it’s acidic, meaning the PH is low as much of our Georgia clay, you’re likely to have blue flowers. By adding lime for the garden to be more alkaline, your blue mopheads will gradually produce pink blooms. First, they’ll move to lavenders and purples, then eventually – and I mean eventually, like several years – reward you with deep pink flowers. Some people are fortunate to

Panicle hydrangeas, which prefer full sun, start with white or light-pink conical blossoms. As they mature, they get slightly larger and turn pinkish. Today’s professional growers have developed a wide variety of cultivars that range from pure white to lime green to deep pink. Look for familiar names like Limelight, Firelight deep pink, and Vanilla Strawberry. They can be pruned any time of year except summer. Oak Leaf Hydrangeas are the show for multi-season color. One of the best places I’ve seen showy plantings is Gibbs Gardens in Ball Ground. Planted beneath tree canopies at the edge of wooded areas, their elongated coneshaped blossoms are prolific starting in June and continuing through summer. In the fall, the oak leaf-shaped foliage changes to reds, oranges, rust, and burgundy. The cinnamon-colored bark provides winter interest as it naturally peels. yard. A word about browsers No, not your computer browsers. I’m talking about deer. All types of hydrangeas are among their favorite foods. The best way to keep deer at bay is to spray them every 10 to 14 days with a proven deer repellent. Two brands work for me, using them in rotation – Liquid Fence and Hinder. Both stink, but that’s the point. The smell and the taste deter browsing by deer, but they are not harmful to wildlife.

Giving back: Local musicians give more than music

• Brief Continued from Page 2 An Amicus Brief is a legal document filed in a case by non-litigants with what they believe is relevant information in the case. Such documents are commonly referred to as “friend of the court” briefs. The brief responds to Florida’s exceptions to a court official’s report that deems Georgia’s water use reasonable and commends Georgia’s conservation efforts. Florida’s 2013 lawsuit initially attacked metroAtlanta’s water use, but later targeted Georgia farmers along the Flint River, who use substantially more water to irrigate crops. “Florida does not meaningfully challenge the Special Master’s detailed findings and recommendations regarding mu-

nicipal and industrial water use by Metro Atlanta,” the brief states. “The words ‘municipal and industrial’ do not appear” in Florida’s arguments with the special master’s report. The word ‘Atlanta’ appears only once – and even then not in reference to any claim by Florida that Metro Atlanta’s water use is unreasonable.” The water users’ group concludes that the court should “hold that water use in Metro Atlanta and the State of Georgia is reasonable, and deny Florida’s request for relief.” Other signers include the counties of Dekalb, Fulton, Atlanta, and Bartow, plus Cartersville and Cobb CountyMarietta.

By Pamela A. Keene Bill and Sheri Eppright’s story is worthy of a love song, in fact, a whole series of them. The couple met at a ballroom dance class, found they had music and more in common, married, and started a band. They’ve now been together for almost 10 years. Today they’re writing songs – mostly love songs – performing and giving back to the community. Their easy folk-pop/adult contemporary style forms the basis of their stage performances, which range from holiday shows to music reviews and concerts. Sheri, the keyboardist is a singer/songwriter. Bill plays guitar and sings. Together, they are Sheri & Bill. “We feel we’ve been blessed to know each other and to share our love, and ever since we started making music together, we’ve donated a percentage of our earnings to community groups,” said Sheri. “Partnering with the community, especially with groups that serve seniors, has been very rewarding.” When the couple lived in Lawrenceville, they often performed at senior centers, churches and parks, mostly for seniors. They partnered with Gwinnett

County Parks and Recreation, Gwinnett Council For Seniors, and the City of Duluth, where both Bill and Sheri served on the boards. August 2020

It’s summertime – time to quench the thirst during the heat Be careful what you wish for. In April it was still too cool for me to be doing more than dreaming of IPAs. Fast forward to late July, 90 degrees at 8 pm and I’m sitting inside because it’s too hot outside. Yes, I’m drinking an IPA though. Dogfish Head’s The Perfect Disguise is a great way to get the dregs of a long workday out of your brain and relax. It’s tangy, with citrus hints of grapefruit and lemon but enough dry pine to even them out. Which leads me into this month’s column on fruity beers. Many years ago, early in my beer journey, my brother introduced me to a local Athens brew with a Golden Retriever on the label. As I’ve been owned by many Goldens I immediately took a liking to that brewery and took a large sip. It was awful – it was grapefruit juice with a hint of beer – to my tastebuds. Others, more knowledgeable than I, declared it was wonderful and I sulked for the rest of the evening with my preferred Budweiser. Years later, I have come to enjoy responsibly fruited beers but lean more toward the drier, bitter ones. As it’s an incredibly hot month let’s talk about cool fruited beers

being chilled. A good example of the result of this technique can be Michael & found in their Brighter Future IPA Sali Duling a hazy, juicy NEIPA (New England India Pale Ale). For the If you’re looking for someLove of thing light and refreshing try their Beer radlers. I’d Radler Be Drinkin’ comes in Lemon Mango and Peach versions at 6%. They are a or “summer beers.” There are little step up in ABV from your quite a few types these days: typical session beers which generIPAs, pilsners, lagers, shandies, ally fall under 5%. Monkey Wrench” and definitely try the Tripel Header. Other summer beverages that have gone through our home fridge rotation and showed up time and time again are: Dogfish Head Sea Quench Ale, a session sour that makes an excellent recovery beer after working in the heat. My first impression of this beer was again, yuck. I wasn’t being fair and entered the tasting with the preconceived notion that this was going to taste like beer. My taste buds reeled with the sourness. A couple months later on a hot day, I tried it again and approached it with no expectations. I’d liken it more to a margarita than a beer as the black limes give it a clean crisp taste and at 4.9% ABV it pairs well with a refreshing shower after yard work. Terrapin Recreation Ale – a session beer at 4.7%, light on the bitterness with floral and citrus flavors. This beer is not an inyour-face taste but you also wouldn’t confuse it with a margarita. Another great deck or boat beer, at 141 calories, it’s right there with the typical soft drink. Cider Boys Strawberry Magic – a sweet cider but not over-

whelmingly so. It’s definitely a porch sitting, drink at dusk. At 200 calories it’s a bit higher than the above and the ABV is 5%. Stella Artois Cidre – clean, crisp and tasty with a very light cider taste. A little more carbonation than the others but still smooth and at 4.5% it’s a sessionable beverage and at 160 calories it won’t trash your workout efforts. Michael suggested I add Yuengling Light Lager which is the epitome of summer session beer: (From Michael) – Let me defend that statement before Sali complains about no hop hit or fruity flavors. Yuengling Light is lager, so even though it is a light beer it retains a flavor. When you are loading a cooler full of beer and ice, this one makes sense when you will be having more than a couple. 99 calories and only 3.8% ABV! Yes, a session beer that tastes like beer! Enjoy your summer, drink responsibly and show our local brewers some love! Michael works around Lake Lanier and Sali is a contract negotiator in the data industry. Many great flooring options are available for lake living Of the many things to consider when building or renovating a home on the lake is the importance of what’s beneath your feet. Let’s face it, when you own a home on the lake, chances are you or your guests are going to be spending some time on the water. Inevitably damp feet and soggy swimsuits will make their way back inside. To help problems associated with wet floors, consider these great flooring options for the areas of your lake home that tend to see more moisture such as kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basements. Tile Tile is one of the most popular flooring materials for homes on the water. Many tile options – and there are more options today than ever before – are beautiful, durable, and economical. Choose from attractive, unique styles that are resistant to scratches and water damage such as: • Wood-look tile • Uniform patterns (stone and ceramic) • Non-uniform patterns (stone) • Molded (uniform edges) • Handmade (sometimes nonuniform edges and textures) • Custom (relief work, nonstandard designs, etc.)

Sara Bagwell Design & Remodel

nMORE INFO: tracytesmerremodeling.com Another bonus – tile flooring is easily maintained, cleaned, and hard-wearing. Be sure to talk to a design-build expert about the best styles to suit your tastes and home, and don’t forget to ask about non-slip additives for any tiling that may become slick when wet. Vinyl Vinyl isn’t what you may remember from your childhood. Waterproof, easy to clean, and dent-resistant, today’s vinyl options can mimic hardwood, stone, or tile without sacrificing comfort. Solid vinyl tile (SVT), luxury vinyl tile (LVT) or luxury vinyl plank (LVP) have realistic appearances and perform better than other flooring styles, as they stand up against wear and tear and can be easier to install. Vinyl

is a viable option for those who want the durability and moisture resistance of tile but are looking to stay within a smaller budget. Additional options Just because we didn’t highlight certain flooring types here as the ideal option for lake living doesn’t mean they have no place in your lake home. However, certain materials should be kept away from areas prone to moisture or humidity fluctuations. • Hardwoods – Hardwood flooring is popular in lake homes, especially on Lanier thanks to its proximity to the foothills of the Appalachians. Hardwoods not only convey that ambiance and add value to your home, but they are durable and attractive. When incorporating hardwoods in your lake home, stick to areas where moisture should be at a minimum, such as foyers, dining rooms, hallways, and bedrooms. Avoid using solid hardwoods in wet areas like laundry rooms, bathrooms, and basements. Engineered hardwood flooring that has a solid veneer with multiple layers of wood underneath is the wood of choice for walk-out basements or areas with fluctuating humidity. Since each layer is positioned in alternating

directions, warping and bowing are prevented and still gives the appearance of solid wood that can even be refinished several times depending on the veneer’s thickness. • Carpet – There’s no harm in having carpet in areas such as bedrooms, living rooms, or upstairs in your lake home. But you’ll need to accept the reality that carpet absorbs moisture, dust, pollen, and other environmental elements thus must be maintained accordingly. Avoid using it in high-traffic, ground floor areas where wet, muddy feet might be. • Bamboo – More eco-friendly and tougher than hardwood flooring, Bamboo is another option that resists infrequent water. It is not a water-proof material though and is prone to cracking when there are drastic humidity changes. Solid, stranded bamboo wins out over other types for strength, durability, and ability to refinish. Lighter colors are less susceptible to scratching and UV discoloration. Definitely avoid these options in any below grade (beneath ground level) rooms in your home. Because these areas are more prone to flooding and lingering moisture, it is best to avoid

Tile is a perfect flooring for the laundry room.

any type of flooring that is prone to water damage. Of course, preventing as much moisture and dripping on your floors, to begin with, is the ideal scenario in any lake home. To accomplish this, consider a back entrance or a “wet room” that’s directly accessible from the lake. If this isn’t feasible, a separate bathroom close to the entrance near the lake can work great. While these entrances can be utilized regularly by you and family members, they’ll be especially beneficial when it comes to guests who are coming inside still wet and need a convenient place to change. If you use the correct flooring options, of course! Sara Bagwell is a designer for Tracy Tesmer Design/Remodeling in Gainesville.

Know the signs: Safe boating is no accident By Pamela A. Keene Even when the water levels at Lake Lanier are close to full summer pool, things can happen. This cruiser, in trying to avoid a pontoon boat, ran aground in Big Creek in July. It took several hours to remove the boat, according to witnesses. “As this boater discovered, knowing what the navigation markers on the lake means is critical to safe boating. And because the traffic on the lake has increased this year, it’s more important than ever for people to know the Rules of the Road and practice safe boating,” said Dave Fuller, commander of America’s Boating Club Atlanta, which teaches Basic Boating Safety classes at Lake Lanier and Allatoona Lake. “Taking a class has many benefits – it can refresh even the most experienced boaters about rules and it can save boaters money on their boat insurance.” Many groups around the lake support safe boating. The Lake Lanier Association has conducted a campaign for the past two years about the “100-foot rule.” Ac-

cording to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the law states that boat operators must slow to idle speed when they are within 100 feet of docks, piers, bridges, shorelines, people in the water or other boats. According to the DNR law enforcement website, “People who operate boats and personal watercraft at dangerously high speeds, and zip into and out of coves and along shorelines where other vessels are anchored or where people are in the water are not only putting themselves and others at risk for serious accidents, but they also are breaking the law,” said Lt. Col. Johnny Johnson, assistant director of the DNR’s Law Enforcement Division. Other “rules of the road” for boat operation posted on the DNR website include: • When meeting another vessel, boat operators should pass on the right side (just like in a car) unless the boats are far enough apart that they are not meeting head on or close to head on. • On narrow rivers and streams, stay as far right as possible and be careful when rounding

bends and curves and overtaking or passing other boats. • In a crossing situation, the boat on the right should hold its course and the boat on the left should slow down and cross behind the other boat. • Powerboats always should yield to sailboats under sail. America’s Boating Club Atlanta’s 8-hour course includes the meaning of markers on waterways, the Rules of the Road, trailering a boat, docking, boat handling, types of boats, boating terminology and safety equipment and procedures. The class curriculum is approved by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GA DNR) and by the National Association of the State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA). “Even if you are a seasoned boater, you will most likely learn something new,” Fuller said. “We’ve had people with their USCG Captain’s License tell us that the day was worthwhile and they were reminded of things they had forgotten. Whether it’s knowing what the markers around the lake mean or brushing up on who

Muscle Shoals, Ala. means music and magic Hidden in the natural beauty of the rolling North Alabama hill country is the once sleepy little town of Muscle Shoals that blossomed after the building of Wilson Dam in 1924. To many tourists, this area is still popular for its great fishing, hunting and history, but to music lovers and recording artists, this is a special place that has become historical in the development of many types of unique American sounds. The father of the blues, WC Handy and Sun Records owner, Sam Phillips, who discovered Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and Johnny Cash, came from this area. Helen Keller, who was blind and deaf, became a national celebrity for her accomplishments that helped the disabled, was from Muscle Shoals. However, in 1959, another native son, Rick Hall, returned to Muscle Shoals with an idea and enough financing to begin FAME Music Studios (Florence Alabama Music Enterprises). Though FAME got off to a rocky start, Hall finally attracted a house back up band known as the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, who later became world famous as the Swampers. They consisted of Jimmy Johnson on guitar, David Hood playing bass, Roger Hawkins on the drums and Spooner Oldham playing keyboards. The Swampers were later immortalized in Lynyrd Skynyrd’s legendary single “Sweet Home Alabama.” You know, that line about Muscle Shoals having The Swampers ... . The real kicker came by accident when Rick Hall found an unknown hospital orderly who sang his patients to sleep. They recorded a song that had been around for awhile, and Rick believed it could be a hit, so he called Jerry Wexler at Atlantic Records in New York and struck a deal – taking a share of the royal-

ties as a finder’s fee in payment – the song was “When a Man Loves a Woman” and the mystery singer was Percy Sledge! Hall was right, and the song went to the top of Billboard’s Hot 100 in 1966 which took Southern Soul to the mainstream and put the Muscle Shoals Sound on the map. This also started a partnership between Hall, Wexler and Atlantic Records as the recording spot of choice to cut records in the South. This new Muscle Shoals style fused hillbilly, blues, rock’n’roll, soul, country and gospel, to create a sound that picked the best features of each to forge something unique. FAME recordings featured heavy bass and drums, but was still light and loose with melodic songs full of passionate stories. Various musicians that hung around at FAME began to jam together with the likes of Duane Allman of The Allman Brothers Band, but Hall didn’t see a future in the sound they had developed, which would be the birth of all Southern Rock. It was a huge mistake by Rick Hall. He told writer Peter Guralnick, “I didn’t know what to do with him and finally Phil Walden said, “Look, you’re not doing anything with him. Why don’t you sell him to Wexler, maybe get your bucks back.” Wexler said, “I’ll only give

you $10,000.” Hall said, “Write me the check.” That decision cost Hall five to ten million dollars!” That was how the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio was founded in 1969, by Barry Beckett, Roger Hawkins, Jimmy Johnson and David Hood. The musicians had taken a gamble, but Wexler saw to it that their new venture had a steady flow of talent coming through the door. The Muscle Shoals Sound Studio became the go-to studio for the biggest names in music. Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Boz Scaggs, Joe Cocker, Rod Stewart, The Staple Singers, Leon Russell, Millie Jackson, Dire Straits, Dr Hook, Cat Stevens, Bob Seeger, Elton John, Willie Nelson and the Rolling Stones all recorded there over the next decade. Today, the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio and the FAME Studio both continue to operate as working studios, as well as being popular tourist attractions, offering daily tours of the restored facilities. Early artists such as Aretha Franklin, Little Richard, Wilson Pickett, Etta James, Otis Redding, the Osmonds, Jerry Reed, Alabama, Mac Davis, the Gatlin Brothers, Bobbie Gentry recorded in Muscle Shoals. More recently FAME has recorded projects for The Gregg Allman Band, Third Day, Michael McDonald, Vince Gill and Alison Krauss to name a few. Continued from Page 50 Alabama Music Hall of Fame. This place honors inductees in three ways: Exhibits illustrating their accomplishments, placement of permanent bronze stars in the walk of fame and induction into the Hall of Fame. Some recipients include: Hank Locklin, Emmylou Harris, Jim Nabors, Wilson Pickett, Bobby Goldsboro, Lionel Richie, Commodores, Martha Reeves, Alabama, Tammy Wynette, Jimmie Rodgers, Percy Sledge, Louvin Brothers, Dinah Washington, Sonny James, W.C. Handy, Nat “King” Cole and Hank Williams. It would take a book to tell about all of the other attractions available in the Muscle Shoals area, but I will list a few options. For a totally unique lodging and outdoor experience in a picturesque setting with lots of wild animals, that is suitable for family, business groups or weddings, nowhere could be better than Willow Oak. This is a preserve located not far from the Muscle Shoals scene with open fields, rolling hardwoods, pine thickets and an abundance of creeks and ponds. This property is a place where one might experience the heart-racing moment of having an encounter with a huge buck, hearing the sound of a morning gobbler or enjoying a colorful sunset from the top of Spruce Pine Mountain. Willow Oak is not just about hunting or fishing. It is a popular destina-

tion/venue for weddings, corporate events and family reunions. Whether you want to bring your family to rest and relax in the sanctuary of nature, or return home with the story of a fantastic hunt, a visit to Willow Oak will be unforgettable. Info: www.visitwillowoak.com If you visit Willow Oak, a small restaurant in nearby Russellville has the best coffee and lunch sandwiches in North Alabama. It is a “hole in the wall” known as the Grind. If you love golf and spectacular scenery, you must play The Shoals, which is one of the courses on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. The Shoals is home to two 18-hole championship courses and lies between the Wheeler and Wilson dams on the Tennessee River. Info: www.rtjgolf.com/theshoals. To the casual observer, Muscle Shoals is just a quiet Alabama town, surrounded by beautiful countryside and bordered by the huge Tennessee River. Life in Muscle Shoals can be slow. Yet it offers exciting things to do and see and is home to some of the greatest recordings in the history of American music! Bill Vanderford has won numerous awards for his writing and photography, and has been inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as a Legendary Guide.

My 4gallon backpack sprayer and I have a standing appointment every weekend and so far this year, we’ve kept the deer away from my garden. Sources for hydrangeas Locally owned nurseries specialize in selling multiple varieties of plants and they’re a good bet for a wide range of hydrangea cultivars. You can find basic types at box retailers or just order online. If you have friends with gardens, ask

them to share with you, either by air-layering – placing a branch on the ground weighted down with a brick or rock until roots develop, typically six months or so – or by taking cuttings and rooting them in water or moist potting soil. The University of Georgia’s Cooperative Extension offers publications about gardening at no charge. More info: www.extension.uga.edu. Pamela A. Keene is senior writer for Lakeside News and a Hall County Master Gardener.
